Sean’s 100th marathon in memory of loved ones

A DOCTOR from Ravensdale who is living and working in Wales is returning home to run his 100th marathon in honour of his late wife and grand-nephew.

61-year-old Dr Sean Mc Cormack is a GP who attended De La Salle Secondary School before studying medicine at UCD.

“I moved to Wales in 1991 for a job. Initially, I was only supposed to stay for 12 months but I’ve ended up staying,” said Sean.

“I love Wales. I’m in a rural area close to Snowdon. I love the outdoors. I met my wife, Majella, when I was 18-yearsold when we were both working in the Ballymac.

“She was from Camlough in Armagh and moved over

to Wales with me. We have two boys, Shane and Steven.” Sean’s marathon career began in 1998 when he was persuaded by a friend to run the Dublin City Marathon in aid of the RNLI. He took to it like a duck to water clocking a very impressive 3 hours and 1 minute. A year later he ran his best ever time again at the Dublin City marathon stopping the clock at 2:48:38. He has also represented Wales at international level in ultra running.

Sean added: “In 1998 I took up running and since then I’ve completed 99 marathons. I’m coming back to Ireland to do my 100th marathon on Saturday next,” explained Sean.

Sean’s passion for running was reignited in 2018, a year after his great nephew Hari sadly died from meningitis.

Sean and a number of other runners including Hari’s Dad Aled ran the Dublin City marathon in his memory. Sadly, his wife Majella passed away after a long illness in 2021 and every marathon he has done since has been to honour the memory of both his wife and grand-nephew.

Last year Sean ran the distance from Hari’s

grave in Kentstown to Majella’s grave in Inniskeen which is just over the length of a marathon. And this year for his 100th marathon he will do the same again to honour two very special people in his life.

“My wife died in November 2021 and is buried in Inniskeen. I plan to run 33 miles on Saturday.

“I’m running from the graveyard in Kentstown, Co Meath where my great nephew, Hari, is buried, to the graveyard in Inniskeen where my wife is buried.”

He added: “Hari, my grandnephew, sadly died in 2017 from meningitis when he was just twoyears-old. This would have been the weekend of his 9th birthday. My beautiful wife Majella died on 26th November 2021 after 13 years of illness. Our grandnephew Hari, from the first time we met him, only a few days old, held a special place in Majella’s heart. After he passed Majella felt very strongly that he protected her and gave her great comfort in her

times of hardship. In return she was always very keen to fundraise in his honour for Temple Street. I am continuing Majella’s wishes and running with our son Steven in memory of Majella for Hari.

Grave concerns

A LOCAL resident has issued concerns regarding the state a number of graves were left in following grass cutting by Louth County Council in Dowdallshill last week. The local man said he was shocked to find a number of graves covered in grass following extensive work in the graveyard by workers from Louth County Council.

Prior to the work being carried out, a number of people on social media as well as a number of local councillors had expressed shock and disgust at the state of the graveyard and how badly kept it was. Last Friday a number of ride on lawnmowers and strimmers were utilised to cut the grass around the cemetery which is the biggest in Dundalk, containing over 10,000 graves.

While the sight of the grass being cut was welcomed from all quarters the mess left behind in certain parts of the graveyard were flagged to the Dundalk Leader by an angry local resident who was shocked to see a number of graves completely covered with grass.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw how many graves were left completely covered with grass. I’m relatively fit and was able to clear any grass away from my relatives graves but it would be practically impossible for an elderly person to clear away that mess especially if their graves were covered with those small decorative stones.

“Of course I welcome the fact that Louth County Council are out cutting the grass and trying to keep the place right but these workers need to have a bit more respect and care when going about their job. Can they not put a sheet over the graves when they are strimming in between graves?” he asked.

When contacted by the Dundalk Leader, Louth County Council insisted that employees using strimmers always strive to minimize the

spread of cut grass to adjoining graves.

“Louth County Council can confirm that grass cutting at the graveyard in Dowdallshill was carried out last week.

“While resource issues can sometimes result in grass growth to the recent level, the council strives to ensure that it is a rare occurrence. When it does occur, council operatives using strimmers strive to minimise the spread of cut grass to adjoining graves, but some such spread can occur.

“When the spread of cut grass from strimming is excessive, council staff will remove the larger portion of grass cuttings from the graves, leaving only smaller amounts. Normal weather conditions, including wind and rain, will eliminate the remaining grass cuttings with time,” concluded the statement.

Peter pleads for government grant to help in shortfall for Louth GAA stadium

Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick has pleaded with Deputy Catherine Martin to help those involved with the Louth GAA stadium project by giving a sports grant to make up the shortfall for the new sporting facility which will be built in Dundalk. Fitzpatrick pointed out that funding has been given to the redevelopment of Casement Park in Antrim and noted that Louth were the only county in Ireland without a stadium.

“I welcome the announcement made by the Minister of State, Deputy Thomas Byrne, that €250 million will be available for sports capital and that every valid application will receive an allocation. I welcome that. I wish to ask about the large infrastructure sports grant, funding from which has not been released since 2018. I welcome that the Government has given €50 million towards a new stadium at Casement Park,” stated Fitzpatrick.

“A new stadium is being built in Louth at the moment. Would the Minister and the Minister of State consider coming down to look at the new stadium? Louth is the only county in the country that has no stadium. Its representa-

tives are working closely with the immigrant investor programme, IIP, and with Croke Park.

“There is an opportunity for the Government to assist with the shortfall of money. I ask the Minister and the Minister of State to consider coming down. The new stadium will help all Thirty-two Counties. It will also help the connection between North and South and everything else. The project has been awaited for 65 years. I ask the Minister about the large infrastructure sports grant and if she would consider coming down to have a look at the new Louth stadium,” he concluded.

Responding to Fitzpatrick, Deputy Catherine Martin, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media of Ireland stated that ‘all valid projects will receive positive news by early Autumn’.

“The sports capital announcement of €250 million is the largest ever investment in sporting facilities nationwide. It represents a 50% increase on the previous round. As the Minister of State, Deputy Thomas Byrne, and I stated yesterday, it means that all applications for valid projects will receive positive news. We expect that to happen in the early autumn. That is really a signal of the determination of the Government, the Minister of State, Deputy Byrne, and I to transform the sporting landscape for every town, village and city in Ireland.

“It is significant that the large scale sport infrastructure fund is open for applications. The closing date in 1 July. It is up to each sporting body. In the case referenced by the Deputy, the GAA must list its priorities to help with applications. That would help those applications,” stated the Minister.

LAST weekend Logan Hoey clinched the Irish Junior Rallycross Championship at Mondello Park in his Mini.

Logan, who only turned 15 in the week prior to the weekend, was totally unstoppable winning all heats, semi final and final on both days of the Irish and British championship meeting.

He also took part in a mixed Irish British junior race on Sunday afternoon finishing an impressive second against the faster Suzuki cars, after starting from the back of the grid.

The Dundalk teenager only started car racing in the ICCR Junior Mini Championship last summer, finishing third in the championship with one win, despite not competing the full championship.

He then started competing in the Junior Rallycross Championship last November to gain more experience.

‘My heart hurts like its never hurt before’

Amy’s Olympic flame is extinguished

AMY Broadhurst will not compete at this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris after she was defeated at the quarter final stage in Bangkok last Friday afternoon.

Amy, a World, European and Commonwealth champion, wanted to end her amateur career by becoming an Olympian but her dream was extinguished as she lost 4-1 to experienced three time Asian champion Yeonji On. In a close fight it was the Korean who got the nod from the onlooking judges.

Broadhurst had switched allegiance to Team GB in a bid to keep her Olympic dream alive after not being selected to represent Ireland at 66kg. She was competing at her favourite weight at 60kg and there had been much talk about a showdown with current Olympic 60kg champion Kellie Harrington but following defeat for the Muirhevnamór southpaw that mouthwatering prospect is now dead in the water.

Speaking after her defeat the 27 year old from Muirhevnamór admitted she was hurting badly after her defeat while she also hit out at her critics who were throwing shots at her for switching her allegiance to Team GB.

“My heart hurts like it’s never hurt before. There was a dream inside of me since I was a little girl and today that flame slowly died out.

“My whole life has all been about the Olympic Games, I made my life all about boxing and today I suffered my biggest blow.

“Some people might criticise my decision for switching allegiance, those people are probably sitting at home who wouldn’t have a pair of balls to do what I done.

“If everyone had any idea what I went thru for the past 12 months you would very well understand why I done what I done and in saying that I have no regrets at all about the decisions I’ve made.

“I give myself every opportunity I could to get to the Olympic Games but that wasnt gods plan for me.

“I ticked every box in the book, I trained my ass off & I done everything correctly and I’m proud of myself.

“Since joining team GB I’ve been made feel at home. The way I was treated, the people who took me under their wing and done all they could for me and

the boxers themselves made this decision worth it.

“These people brought back the love for boxing that I was missing and lit a fire in me that I haven’t felt for a long time!

“I haven’t been this happy in a long time and I’m very grateful for the people that I got to meet along this journey.

“They took a chance on me and believed in me and unfortunately i couldn’t return the favour.

“I would like to thank the GB coaches & staff for all their hard work and making me feel I belong.

Online safety code for kids ‘long overdue’

CYBERSAFEKIDS has welcomed the publication of the first draft Online Safety Code by Coimisiún na Meán.

According to CyberSafeKids, this is a landmark development as it’s the first of its kind in Ireland.

“We are one of the most prominent voices who have long called for the era of self-regulation to be over,” said CyberSafe Kids CEO Alex Cooney.

“The need to regulate online services is long overdue and, on that basis alone, it is important to acknowledge the significance of this announcement.

“We have been anticipating it. It was put out to a consultation process late last summer. Now we have the draft, we are awaiting final approval.”

She added: “There

are elements of the code that we particularly welcome; the inclusion in the definition of associated actions with video content such as comments and shares is one of these.”

“This will make a difference in instances of cyberbullying. We recently dealt with one such case involving a 13-year-old boy whose mother had flagged video content that he had uploaded at a younger age, and which had been the cause of a sustained bullying campaign against him by some of his classmates.

“The company in question refused to remove the content because the content itself did not violate their community standards.”

Michael’s birthday bash raises €2,300 for palliative care

COOLEY man Michael McGlynn used his 60th birthday celebrations to help raise over €2000 for the Palliative Care services in both Dundalk and Drogheda. Michael organised the fundraiser as a thank you to the staff in both Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and Louth County Hospital who helped look after his father Michael McGlynn. Michael sadly passed away last November in the Louth County Hospital.

Michael and his wife Kathleen were well known the country for their great work in the set dancing community with the pair helping to revive the age old tradition around Louth. They put on classes passing on all of their vast knowledge of set dancing in classes in Mullaghbouy and The Pats GFC hall in Lordship.

Michael’s son Michael turned 60 recently and he was keen to use his birthday to help raise money for the local services who helped his father towards the end of his life.

“ We celebrated my birthday in the Clans Hall and we had over 200 people attend the evening. Dad was in both the Lourdes and Louth Hospital and he was looked after brilliantly by the fantastic staff in both hospitals. I wanted to acknowledge that by raising money

for the palliative care services in the hospitals and thanks to the generosity of people who attended my birthday party we managed to raise €2,300 for them. Myself and my mother Kathleen, recently handed over the cheque to Prof. Dominic O’Brannagain from Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. We were delighted to be able to do so and we would both like to thank the staff in both hospitals as well as everybody who contributed tour fundraiser,” stated Michael.

This year there were plenty of celebrations on Africa Day across the county with events held in Ardee Drogheda and Dundalk.

African Day celebrated across the county

AFRICAN Day celebrated colourfully in Louth supported by the Irish Aid and the Louth County Council.

For the first time ever, African Day was celebrated in Ardee this year to add to the celebrations that took place in both Drogheda and Dundalk.

The event was full of colour at all the various locations, showcasing the African culture through cultural tapestry, cuisines, regalia, music, dancing, drama, drumming, and lots more insightful moments. This helped promote a more intercultural space where we all embraced each other with love. One Louth, One Community. Happy Celebration.

Teachers going to ‘Hell and Back’ this weekend for pupils

Staff from the CBS Primary will take on the notorious Hell and Back challenge this weekend to raise money for an outdoor space in the school.

THE staff and parents of CBS Primary School in Dundalk are preparing to take on the Hell & Back challenge this Saturday (June 8th) to raise money for their outdoor space.

CBS Primary School Junior Infants teacher Amy Curran from Avondale is one of the teachers due to take part in the Hell & Back challenge for the school fundraiser.

Amy has taken part in two Hell & Back events before, one 13km event and one 8km event.

She said that the 13km obstacle

course is “very tough” and participants need “a high level of fitness, especially upper body strength”.

“There’s a lot of climbing over things, crawling and getting over walls but if you work together as a team and help each other out you will get to complete the course,” she said.

Succesful outing for local Comhaltas members

BRANCH members from Comhaltas Ceolróirí Éireann Craobh Dhún Dealgan (Dundalk branch of Comhaltas) had a very successful outing at the recent Louth Fleadh Cheoil held in Drogheda. Some of the younger members were experiencing competition for the first time while for many of the more experienced ones it was familiar territory as they are either reigning or former All Ireland champions..

Those placed 1st or 2nd will go on to compete at the Leinster Fleadh in Wicklow town in July. The weekly branch classes held in the Oriel centre (Dundalk Gaol) are not just confined to pupils from Dundalk and other areas of Louth, they are also attended by young musicians from surrounding counties. It will be no surprise then if some branch members qualify from the Armagh Down and Monaghan Fleadhanna to compete at the Ulster

Fleadh. Best of luck to all in their various competitions throughout the summer.
