THIS time last year, Redeemer SNA teacher, Aidan Moore had never played a note on a ukulele but after receiving one as a Christmas gift the 43 year old immediately became obsessed with the four stringed instrument which resembles a small acoustic guitar. In January, Aidan signed up for lessons with the Dundalk Ukulele strummers along with his mother and pretty quickly he discovered he had a talent for playing the instrument. Having struggled with his mental health during lockdown and seeing how much joy the ukulele had given him, Aidan, originally from Coxes Demesne but now living in Legion Avenue, wanted to spread that feeling of joy to the pupils in the Redeemer Boys School and so began his quest to gift every boy in the school a free ukulele along with free lessons. The Redeemer Boys School lost one of their own just over a year ago when hugely popular Calvin Curley Gray died in a tragic accident. Aidan knew Calvin very well from working in the school as an SNA and was devastated after the 11 Some of the Redeemer Boys pupils who received a free ukulele from Aidan Moore. Aidan’s goal is to year old’s death. Continued On Page 2 ensure every child in the school receives a free ukulele as well as free lessons to learn how to play it.

Continued from Page 1 “It broke my heart to be honest. The whole school was under a cloud and I wanted to do something for the boys but I didn’t know what. It was only when I started playing the ukulele that the idea came to me to give the boys an instrument.

Something that would stay with them for life. I know times are tough for people so I knew I had to raise money to buy the instruments and after that I could give the boys free lessons,” he explained. Aidan pounded the streets of Dundalk with a letter asking businesses if they would

help him buy approximately 60 ukuleles which would be gifted to the boys in 4th, 5th and 6th classes. According to Aidan he wasn’t too confident of getting much response but within days the money started coming in and his dream was about to turn into a reality. “I remember getting a call from Mac’s Coffee on the Castletown Road telling me they were going to give me a cheque and I was blown away. Then the phone just kept on ringing and I got cheques from the St Vincent de Paul, Dundalk Credit Union and a number of businesses all over the town. B-Sharp Music donated ten Ukuleles to me and I got tuners and bags for the uke as well. I knew the boys were interested in the uke as I had started bringing it into school and playing it in the yard and the lads were very keen in having a go and learning how to play it. We are now at the

Redeemer Boys School pupils practice playing their ukuleles in the schoolyard. point were every boy in 4th, 5th and 6th class has their own instrument and I teach them every Wednesday in the Redeemer Community Resource Centre who have given me the room for free owing to the fact that I don’t charge for the lessons. The boys love it and they come in every Wednesday and learn new chords and songs to play. I did a ‘teaching ukulele in the classroom’ course

last summer off my own back so I’m equipped to show the lads how to play it properly. “It’s been a great success and Michelle the school principal has been 100% behind me which I’m grateful for. Now I want to keep this going and ensure every single boy in the school gets a ukulele. I am organising a fundraiser in the Tipsy Cow on Church St. on the 9th of February. I have been

told by the Tipsy Cow that they will match whatever I raise so I’m going all out to make this a great night of entertainment. I’ll have a DJ and there will be live music and hopefully the people of Dundalk will come out and support the event. “Personally, I went through a lot of stress during COVID and it got so bad I developed alopecia but since discovering this wonderful instrument I’ve been doing great and I am also giving lessons to adults now as well who have heard about my project and are interested in learning how to play. I play it every single day and I can’t pass it in my house without picking it up and strumming it much to the annoyance of my girlfriend,” laughs Aidan. Love Island actually helped me last summer because she would be watching it religiously and for that hour I had peace to pick up the uke and practice. I know how much the

uke has done for me and if it can give any of the boys even a quarter of the joy I have received from it I will be a happy man,” stated Aidan. If anybody would like to make a donation to help Aidan achieve his goal they can send

money to the Redeemer Boys School or B-Sharp Music in Williamsons Mall. If any adult would like to enquire about lessons they can contact Aidan Moore on his facebook page or call into the Tipsy Cow for further details.

O’Dowd and Munster to step down after next election THERE will be at least two new political faces locally following the next election after Fine Gael’s Fergus O’Dowd and Sinn Fein’s Imelda Munster announced their intention to step down at the next general election.

O’Dowd has represented the people of Louth for a total of 50 years as an elected representative through his work as a councillor, Mayor

of Drogheda, senator and TD. He chaired both the Oireachtas Transport Committee and Good Friday Implementation Committee and was Minister of State at the Department of Communications. O’Dowd thanked his wife Agnes and his children as he announced his decision to step down.

While O’Dowd’s decision to step down wasn’t too surprising,

the news that Sinn Fein’s Imelda Munster had decided to step down was met with shock in most quarters.

Munster was the first ever woman elected as a TD for Louth when she ran successfully in 2016 and in 2020 her popularity was rubberstamped when she received the highest number of votes of any TD ever elected in County Louth.

Concerns aired over developments in Blackrock/Haggardstown

Dundalk Leader 6th December 2023

OVER 90 people attended a meeting of residents from Haggardstown and Blackrock on Wednesday, November 29 to discuss their concerns about the area. Chairperson of Haggardstown Tidy Towns’ Committee Shane McGuinness told the Dundalk Leader that the meeting was “very productive”. “It was an open invitation and it was a great night. We discussed lots of different things, in particular the zoning with Haggardstown and Blackrock,” said Shane. “There was some anger expressed. Haggardstown and Blackrock are very close to Dundalk. People are annoyed that the area hasn’t been given a chance to stay as a community. “The infrastructure is very badly laid out. There are about 11 different developments going on in Blackrock at

Shane McGuinness. the moment.” Shane added: “We are not anti-housing or anti the wind turbine proposed by WuXi. We are not happy with the lack of communication. “WuXi put in an application for planning permission for a large wind turbine in Haggardstown and a number of submissions were made in relation the proposal. “Louth County Council have now asked

WuXi for further information. At the meeting on Wednesday, we decided to set up the Haggardstown-Blackrock Community Forum.” Shane continued: “We are planning to have a meeting on January 3, 2024 to formalise the committee. “People are frustrated and asking why are where we are now? They are also annoyed about the massive amount of

money paid in rates by commercial entities. “Some people feel the money raised by commercial rates could be used to benefit more people in the community.” He concluded: “There is a HaggardstownBlackrock Community Forum page that people can check out for further information and details about the next meeting. “Everyone is really worried about what is coming down the line. Some people have concerns about social issues in the area with the number of houses being built without proper infrastructure and amenities. “We need a proper plan. The zoning map isn’t good enough. There needs to be more detail and residents here need to have a voice. It’s been 13 years and we haven’t had a representative from the area on the council.”

Louth Gears Up for the Festive Season

Dundalk Leader 6th December 2023

AS the festive season quickly approaches, Local Enterprise Office Louth is getting into the Christmas spirit, urging local people to “Look for Local, Look for Louth.” Choose to make a difference this year by opting for the charm and uniqueness of local shopping in Louth’s many charming towns and villages. Cllr. Paula Butterly, the Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, explains: “Our local businesses are the heartbeat of our community. Shop local, and not only will you discover oneof-a-kind, top-quality gifts, but you’ll also be investing in the prosperity of our towns and villages. Let’s all make it a Look for Local Christmas, by looking for Louth when shopping.” Sarah Mallon from Local Enterprise Office Louth focuses on the economic benefits: “Every local purchase

Look for Local this Christmas - Look for Louth . directly impacts our community’s economic health. It sustains jobs, encourages new businesses to start-up, and adds to the overall vibrancy of Louth. This Christmas, let’s give our local businesses our support, both in-store and online, and celebrate the personal touch they bring to our shopping experiences.” Patricia McDonnell, Chair of Ardee Traders, highlights the dis-

tinct offerings of local businesses: “Ardee is home to a treasure trove of unique shops and boutiques, each offering something special. When you shop locally, you’re not just getting a product; you’re investing in the passion, expertise, and personalised service that our local business owners provide. And this holds true throughout the towns and villages in Louth. So, let’s all

keep it local and make our Christmas shopping an unforgettable experience.” Sarah Mallon adds a savvy online shopping tip: “When going digital, add in the word ‘Louth’ or the name of your local town or village into your online search. This helps you find out if your desired gift is available locally, before ordering it from abroad. Once you’ve located the perfect gift,

you can either purchase in store or order online.” “At the Local Enterprise Office Louth, we’re all about supporting the growth of small businesses. That’s why we encourage everyone to visit www.localenterprise.ie/ Louth to kickstart their Christmas shopping. Explore a vast selection of local shops, gifts, crafts, home and garden, food, fashion, and more, all right on your doorstep. If you’d like to see your business on our webpage, email your company name, web address and the category your business belongs in to tradingonline@leo.louthcoco. ie. We’re proud to host the Look for Local, Look for Louth campaign, reminding locals that thoughtful shopping choices can make a positive impact on our community, both at Christmas and throughout the year.”

Dealgan Boxing Club 85th Anniversary Celebrations THE Local Dealgan Boxing Club celebrated 85 years with a boxing dinner show in the Gateway hotel on Saturday last. Boasting 103 All Ireland Titles, 15 Internationals and 15 European and World medals, the Dundalk centre of excellence put its young guns on show on the night, contesting 14 top class bouts v an Irish Select. The scene was set as the Gateway hotel was transformed into Caesars Palace for one night only to showcase this iconic club. As a curtain raiser, the reformed St Brigid’s Pipe and Drum Band provided the atmosphere for the Battles to come, leading out both teams into the arena before a very expectant crowd. They were not to be disappointed as the Dealgan Squad showed what they are about,

both in technical ability and fitness levels they outpointed their opponents in all but one bout. The tremendous performances of the night were too many to mention ensuring the hardworking coaching staff in Marian Park could be very proud of the boxing level they are producing. However, as the MC on the night and head coach Anto Donnelly underlined in his address to the boxing masses, “our club is one of many boxing clubs spanning the country continually providing their communities with a safe place for children and adults alike to pursue the Olympic sport of amateur boxing, improve mental welfare and change lifestyle to a healthier one”. In attendance, the President of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association

Mr Gerry O’Mahony praised the club for its hard work and dedication, reiterated by Leinster President Mr Jim Murrin. The annual Awards were presented on the night by both presidents to: Aiden Moore & Mira Unachukwu (Best Male Boxers), Daisy Kieran (Best Female Boxer), Tiarnan Cunningham & Sean McCusker (Most Improved Boxers), Sophie Curley Grey (International Achievement), Jack Finegan (Best boxer of the night award) & Club person of the year award went to Danny Sherry for his outstanding coaching. The Dealgan Boxing Club would like to thanks all in attendance and all sponsors who continually support the club on annual basis without this the club would not exist.

De La Salle and St Louis host French students for exchange programme

17 French students took part in a student exchange programme with the De La Salle secondary and St Louis Secondary schools. SEVENTEEN students and three teachers from the College Jean Monnet in Yssingeaux spent five days with their Irish partners and host families in Dundalk. The seven male students attended classes in De La Salle on Friday 17th and Monday 20th while the ten female students attended a wide variety of classes in St. Louis. The French visitors even got to

see a Gaelic football match on Friday! This was a very rewarding and enriching experience for all involved and we’re all looking forward to the return visit to France in April 2024. Well done to St Louis teacher Ms Brenda Murphy and De La Salle teacher Aine McBreen for co-ordinating.

THE family business may have been stationery but Mark Devenney’s life has been anything but with the Blackrock man leaving Ireland over fifty years ago with his job taking him to South Africa where he formed his own computer company before later getting into the hospitality business when he bought his own hotel just outside Johannesburg. Mark was one of four brothers raised in Blackrock and was a son of Betty and Dan Devenney who established

the well known Office Supplies and Stationery Shop which is still in operation today in Crowe St. Dundalk. Throughout it all though, Mark’s real passion has been in painting and since selling his hotel in 2007 the Blackrock native has immersed himself fully into art and has sold paintings all over the world including the US, South Africa, UK and Netherlands. Now at the age of 78, Mark has returned to Ireland having bought a beautiful cottage in Castleblayney

which overlooks Lough Egish and which contains a studio where he plans on creating many more paintings. According to Mark his love of art has been with him since he was about seven years old and his prodigious talent was recognised in his Leaving Cert where he was awarded the second highest mark in the country for his art exam. “I have always loved art. After completing secondary school I went to the College of Art in Dublin and I had great fun fiddling around as

a young man before getting into the computer business. I married young in Dublin and had two kids and we moved to South Africa where I had my own computer business. When I sold that company I bought a hotel 200km from Johannesburg in 1997 and enjoyed 10 years in the hospitality business before selling the hotel in 2007 to concentrate full time on painting. Renowned Dutch art dealers Capel and Capel are big fan’s of Mark’s and even organised an exclusive exhibition of

his work in South Africa in 2015 which was a huge success. Speaking about Mark’s work. Eugene van Capele stated: “We saw one of Mark’s paintings in 1999 in a gallery in the town of Wakkerstroom in South Africa during a visit there and we bought it the day after. We recognised his talent and bought many of his paintings in the 24 years we know Mark. In 2015 we did an exclusive exhibition on Mark Devenney in Wakkerstroom which was well attended and successful. As Art Historians we see in Mark a unique talent,” stated Eugene. Mark’s paintings have sold all over the world and having left South Africa earlier this year to settle in Castleblayney he is now looking forward to a new chapter of his career as well as trying to bring the beauty of art to the

Mark Devenney.

masses around Dundalk. “It’s magic to be home and I’ve settled really well in a beautiful cottage in Castleblayney. I have my own studio

out there and I am also getting support from An Táin Arts Centre who have kindly allowed me to use their Bo Studios in the Town Hall. The

plan now is to keep on enjoying my painting and to start selling my paintings in Ireland. I want to make art more accessible to the masses and I really do think that art should be available to see for every Tom, Dick and Harry. There are not enough openly available art galleries and that has to change,” stated Mark. “I want to try and help expose art to a wider audience. This is one of the most exciting ventures of my life and the buzz I get putting paint to canvas never gets old. Never retire is my advice. Keep on doing the things you love. Hard work will always beat talent and I would urge anybody who has a talent to make the most of it,” added Mark. Mark’s paintings can be found on his facebook page at Mark Devenney Art Gallery.

New era beckons for Dundalk FC as new owner takes charge

Dundalk Leader 6th December 2023

DUNDALK FC ushered in a new era last week when they confirmed that negotiations had concluded for American-based businessman Brian Ainscough to assume full control of the club. The Dubliner, who tasted League of Ireland football with Home Farm and Drogheda United as a youngster, moved to the USA in 1983 and spent the best part of three decades as a player and coach before moving into the business side of the game. Based in Boston, Ainscough is the CEO of United Soccer League Two club Boston Bolts and was instrumental in Kerry FC’s introduction to the League of Ireland in 2023. He tendered his resignation as CEO and shareholder of the Tralee club last week and will succeed Andy Connolly, Sean O’Connor and Alan Clarke who relinquished control having acquired the club just over two years ago. Speaking to Gavin McLaughlin in an interview for the club’s website, Ainscough spoke about his plans in getting the club back into Europe and challenging domestically. “I know the people at STATSports because of my business in America and I’ve become

Brian Ainscough is the new owner of Dundalk FC good friends and business partners with Sean O’Connor, in particular. I knew that Sean had been looking for investors to come on board at Dundalk and I sent them one or two people like that from America. In the last month or so, I got talking to Sean a little bit more in-depth about where the club is going. Obviously I keep an eye on the League of Ireland because I was down in Kerry and I was pretty happy down there but when I found out where Sean was, I said maybe it’s something that I’d be very interested in. So it came off the cuff in that way. That was say, four or five weeks ago, so it did come around quickly. “Dundalk is one of the top clubs in Ireland for as long as I remember. I could name some of the coaches and some of the players that came through here, but it was always one of the top, top clubs. I’m a com-

petitor and I wanted an opportunity to be with one of the top clubs and Dundalk, with all of its history and stuff like that, was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. “In the short term, the best way for me to get this over the line was to be the 100% owner from a business standpoint but I have investors that I’ve talked with over the last four or five weeks and I’ll be looking for investors to help us with the financial side of this club. “I’ve been with Stephen over the last couple of days. He’s a wonderful lad and I know he’s a legend around here but from a coaching standpoint, he’s a young guy and he’s been terrific. The fact that people are calling 2023 a poor year when we were just two points away from qualifying for Europe is a credit to the club and it’s a credit to him. “I think if you went to every fan, all through

Dundalk, they’d want to get back to Europe. That’s the goal, that we’re back in Europe and also competing for titles and winning cups. He’s been in a bit of limbo over the past few weeks but he’s off the leash now. He can get to work and talk to his players and his staff assure them that we’re in a good place and we’re ready to kick on. “I’ve seen most of the grounds in Ireland and most need upgrading. I don’t think Oriel Park is on its own. Shamrock Rovers have done a bit with the help of their council and hopefully, we can get some help here but my goal as we go on is to make our club the most professionally run club in Ireland. That means that we give our fans a place that they’re proud of, on the pitch, and off the pitch. We all know that the lights need to be fixed and that our academy needs a place to play. It’s a marathon, but we are in a hurry to fix some of them and get moving. I know we’ve had a lot of owners in the last decade here. I plan to be here for at least a decade and in that decade, we hope that there’s huge improvement in the facility and so forth,” concluded the club’s new owner.

Security workers based at WuXi threaten strike in row over Christmas bonuses By Tamara O’Connell

THIRTY security workers based at sites at WuXi in Dundalk are seeking a Christmas bonus from their employer, security company G4S. The majority of the security workers are represented by the Independent Workers’ Union (IWU). According to IWU organiser, Alex Homits, the security workers have made it “very simple” for G4S. “It is standard across unionised sectors to obtain a Christmas bonus from their employer,” said Alex. “Many employers utilise vouchers, as they

Alex Homits, organiser for Independent Workers’ Union. are tax free to the worker and can be written off as a deductible expense when run through payroll.

“The team at Wuxi Vaccines & Biologics have worked very hard throughout the year, often in excess of 48, 50,

and even 60 hours and so deserve something to recognise their hard work this Christmas.” Alex added: “We are asking G4S to provide each of the workers with a minimum of three months service at the Wuxi site, a €1,000 One4All / Mastercard gift card. “We have contacted G4S about this issue but we haven’t heard back from them yet. We will give it a week and later we will convene a general meeting. “Ideally, we would prefer to get a response and confirmation for workers, but if not we are happy to escalate this matter.”

Brown Bull of Cooley sculpture on M1 set for repairs following storm damage

The Brown Bull of Cooley sculpture is set for repairs following storm damage. LOUTH County Council have instructed repair works to be carried out on the iconic Brown Bull of Cooley sculpture along the M1 motorway. The sculpture, which stands along the motorway outside Dundalk in County Louth has been impacted by recent storms and wind damage. Known as ‘An Tarbh Donn’, the stainless steel structure was commissioned to mark the opening of the M1 outside Dundalk in 2005. The three metre high bull was directly inspired by the ancient heritage of north Louth, and the Bull in the Táin Bó Cúailnge. It was positioned on a concrete base looking towards the Cooley

Peninsula, and has become a unique Louth landmark over the last three decades. Sadly, the bull was damaged during an apparent attempted theft in 2013, which led to Louth County Council removing the sculpture for a time, so that much needed off site repairs could be completed. It was then returned to the Balriggan townland site in 2014. Over the last nine years the exposed hill top position has, however, left the sculpture entirely exposed to the severe elements, and the impact of storms. High winds during the recent ‘Storm Debi’ led to the bull being razed from his stand, and the

body of the sculpture coming to rest on the ground. Louth County Council engineers are now leading an operation to have the bull, which weighs upward of one tonne, raised up and and reset upon his steel hooves. The planned remedial work will not affect the motorway traffic and there are no expected closures of the M1 needed while the repairs are being conducted. Specialist stainless steel fabricators will also be deployed to strengthen the base of the structure, and firmly secure it back in place. These remedial works will take place in the coming months.
