Louth garda chief, Chief Supt. Christy Mangan has angrily condemned an attack last week on an off duty garda who was out socialising with his partner in Dundalk. The attack happened on Sunday 27th June on Park Street and resulted in the garda being brought to hospital where he received a number of stitches. According to a garda statement a man in his early 20’s was arrested on Monday before being released without charge.

“Gardaí in Dundalk are investigating the assault of an off-duty Garda on June 27, 2021 on Park Street in Dundalk.

A man in his early 20s was arrested yesterday, July 5, 2021 in connection with this matter. He has since been released without charge. A file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions,” read the statement.

“As police officers we are used to a certain level of abuse but we certainly don’t

expect to be attacked when doing our job and certainly not when out socialising on our own time. It was a very difficult incident for that member of the gardaí and this is something that we are treating extremely seriously.

“There have been a number of incidents in recent years which have seen gardaí attacked in Louth and it has to stop,” stated the Chief Superintendent.

Hugh was first elected to Louth County Council in 1985 and he has always proved popular at the polls winning four of his six elections and narrowly failing in the other two (including in 2014 when he missed out by just 27 votes in the local elections.

He was returned as an Independent Candidate for a seat in the Mid Louth Electoral Area during the last local elections in 2019 and he was a long serving member of the Mid Louth Joint Policing Committee.

Brendan warns of increase in illegal parking in disabled bays Local disability activist Brendan Moore has urged people who are illegally using disabled parking bays around town to show some respect to the people who actually should be using the spaces.

In 2018 local gardai attempted to tackle this exact issue when they launched ‘Operation Enable’ with Chief Superintendent of the Louth Garda division, Christy Mangan, vowing the force would utilise a zero-tolerance approach with regards to the abuse of parking in disabled bays across the county.

He asked for motorists to respect the wheelchair accessible parking bays and also called for those in possession of a valid permit not to give it out to anybody not eligible to use one.

Louth was the first

county outside the capital to launch Operation Enable and was declared a success with fines of €150 for illegal parking in wheelchair bays acting as a deterrent for would be offenders.

However, according to Brendan incidents of illegal parking are once again on the rise and he says there are people who are parking for eight hours five days a week in disabled spaces despite the maximum stay being just two hours.

“Unfortunately the number of people who are breaking the law in relation to disabled bays is on the increase once again. According to Louth County Council people who have disabled permits have to abide by all traffic laws which means they can only park in a disabled bay for two hours in

the public disabled bays around town. I know for a fact that there are people parking in disabled bays for eight hours a day five days a week.

The car does have a wheelchair sticker but that does not excuse them hogging the space for that length of time,” stated Brendan.

“There’s a parklet in that car park now as well which means a couple of parking spaces have been lost which haven’t helped matters.

Unfortunately there are also people who are still using other peoples disabled permits which they then use to park all day. This was a big issue around Dundalk a few years ago and in fairness to the Gardaí they did crack down on it but it is on the rise again and it needs to be looked at once more by them,” added Brendan.

Over 250 people are homeless in Co Louth say LCC

OVER 250 people presented as homeless in Co Louth in May 2021, according to data collated

by Louth County Council.

In Dundalk 146 people presented as homeless, in Ardee six people presented as homeless and in Drogheda 104 people presented as homeless in the month of May. As the responsible housing authority for the North East Region, Louth County Council continues to manage this area and achieve the goals set out in the North East Homelessness Strategy 2018-2020.

The preparation for a new threeyear strategy has commenced. According to Louth County Council, 238 out of 256 people were offered advice and support (including fast tracking for HA Rent Supplement eligibility).

Twelve people were placed in temporary accommodation. Isolation units have been made available for homeless persons with suspected/confirmed cases of Covid-19.

As a direct response to the risk of communal spread of the Covid-19 virus amongst vulnerable individuals in homeless hostels, the council has opened up a number of void properties and temporarily moved individuals and families from hostel accommodation into these units.

This has allowed these persons to live in a more isolated environment, thereby decreasing the risk of infection. Contracted service providers have continued to provide meals and high-level support to these clients.

The full range of homeless services continues to be provided remotely, and staff are available on request in exceptional circumstances.

Since December 2017, the Homeless Office has carried out random and unannounced inspections on all B&Bs, hotels and hostels providing Private Emergency Accommodation on behalf of Louth County Council. This will continue on a monthly basis subject to Covid-19 permissions.

DUNDALK Institute of Technology (DkIT) is planning to further update its students towards the end of July about its reopening plans for the next academic year.

More information is expected to be made available from The Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science at the end of July.

This will assist the institute in its planning for reopening, according to the DkIT Covid-19 Taskforce.

DkIT is currently finalising plans for a return to campus with a view to welcoming all students back to campus in September 2021.

In a statement published on DkIT’s website, the DkIT Covid-19 Taskforce said that the Government has recon-

“Planning is proceeding on the basis that resumption of on-site activity is warranted while ensuring that overall numbers attending onsite are monitored and controlled,” it stated.

activity will take place within public health guidelines. A series of welcome back events (refreshers) will take place for returning second years on September 16 and 17. Induction for incoming first years will take place on campus on September 23 and 24.

O’Murchú calls First ever residents association for Pearse Park for Dealgan House One of the very few positives to take out of the pandemic has been the strengthening of communities where new friendships and groups have been formed as people came together to support neighbours and newly made friends during lockdown. One such group that has sprung up is the Pearse Park Residents Association which surprisingly is the very first such association formed in the street’s 74 year history.

The Association was formed on the 14th of May and was triggered by residents standing outside their houses to pay their respects to the funerals of anybody who had died in the area.

Residents who maybe previously didn’t know too many of their neighbours due to long working hours were now seeing much more of them due to lockdowns etc and bonds were formed as impromptu exercise sessions were put on outside and people were out walking more.

Chairperson of the group Laura Hoey saw the potential to form a group for the betterment of the area and after sending out forms to test the waters for a new residents association she was both surprised and delighted to see the vast majority of the 118 houses come on board with the idea.

“We started up the

association in May and thanks to the hard work of everybody on the street the place is looking much better already.

The roads are clean, we have beautiful flowers in pots all over Pearse Park and it has been a joy to see everybody get on board. I have been living in Pearse Park for sixteen years and it has always been a fan-

tastic little community.

However, generally you would only know some of the people on your street and not the people from around the corner or on a different row to you.

“That has kind of changed during the pandemic and I feel the residents of Pearse Park are a much more tightly knitted unit now. There

is a great mix of young and old down here and everybody who is able have been coming out and taking part in helping to get the place clean. We had Cllr John Reilly and Senator John Reilly out helping us for our first big clean up last month and the plan is to come out on the first Saturday every month to pick up rubbish etc and keep the place tidy. The council have been great providing us with litter bags, gloves and pickers. They will then collect the bags for us when we are done,” explained Laura.

“We have also made a wee football pitch on the green for the kids with wee goals and lines marked out and all in all the street is looking so well since we have all come together. I think there is a sense of pride amongst residents for the work done so far and the plan is to keep on improving the area and keep it looking well,” stated Laura.

public inquiry The issue of a public inquiry into the Covid 19 outbreak at Dealgan House Nursing Home in Dundalk has been raised again in Leinster House by Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú, who used speaking time on vaccines to call for an investigation.

The Sinn Féin TD spoke on Friday, the day after the RTÉ Investigations Unit programme on nursing homes.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘We have had multiple reports into weaknesses in how we look after our older people and the whole system.

‘We know the issues in relation to the Covid period. I think everyone is in agreement that there needs to be an inquiry into that period, particularly regarding nursing homes and what the State did

‘The Minister (for Health) will not be shocked, having met the Dealgan House families. He knows the tragedy, the huge loss of life and the impact on a huge number of families who are still

looking for answers.

‘At this point, I can only see the answer being a full public inquiry. There is a huge number of players and everybody has a right to their narrative.

‘We need this to be interrogated completely, involving nursing home management in Dealgan, HIQA, the MEP who was involved in some of the interactions, the HSE, CHO 8, the Minister for Health at the time, the CMO, the CEO and the head of community operations of the HSE and the RCSI Hospital Group.

‘Everyone has a part to play. We need a full inquiry. I would like the Minister to return to the families. He has told them they need to be given some mechanism to provide answers and an inquiry is the only way to do it’.

The SEEK Contemporary Urban Arts Festival is gearing up for another exciting programme of events, with worldrenowned artists to hit the streets of Dundalk. SEEK will take place from Saturday 31st July to Saturday 7th August.

The festival is thrilled to have secured the talents of five exceptional muralists, each at the top of their game, hailing from Ireland and overseas.

The first three to be announced are Basik and Tellas from Italy; and returning to the festival for a second year, Northern Ireland based Friz.

Friz painted a stunning piece in 2020 of Bridget of Faughart at St. Nicholas’ Church on Bridge Street. More artists will be announced in the coming weeks.

Building on the success of the previous two years, the festival will host additional guided walking tours for both day time and evening, children’s and teenagers’ painting workshops, print workshops and fringe events for all to enjoy.

Artist Barry Finnegan from the SEEK Team has commented, “The ethos of SEEK is to explore Dundalk’s rich history, whilst giving a platform to artists to express themselves and showcase the high standard of work they produce. We believe that the curation process is

hugely important in selecting the right artists, whose individual styles shine a light on the chosen themes.”

Originally on the programme for 2020, Italian artist Basik is really looking forward to visiting Dundalk for the first time.

Basik’s style mixes his graffiti background with a graphic approach to painting, which is inspired by Medieval and Renaissance art. His work also looks at distinctive traits in popular culture and antique religious imagery. In recognition of his talents, Basik has been selected to depict the theme of Oliver Plunkett (1625 - 1681), who was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. He maintained his duties in Ireland in the face of English persecution and was eventually arrested and tried for treason in London. He was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn on 1 July 1681, and became the last Roman Catholic martyr to die in England.

Oliver Plunkett was beatified in 1920 and canonised in 1975, the first new Irish saint for almost seven hundred years. Not many people may know that Oliver was captured and imprisoned in cells under what is now Byrne’s Pharmacy at the corner of Church Street, so the wall selection on the corner Yorke Street and Clanbrassil Italian artist Tellas will be in Dundalk for SEEK festival next month.

Tellas who hails from Sardinia has a style that is richly organic and is inspired by the natural elements defining the landscape around him. His artwork is hugely anticipated, as it will adorn the newly restored Berrill’s Solicitors building, painted as part of the Facades Project, on Francis Street. This passion for botany is a perfect fit as he will be paying homage to the life of Dr. Thomas Coulter (1793 -1843). Coulter travelled extensively and the collections of specimens he accumulated grace many of the universities and museums of the world, with numerous plants that have been named in his honour.

No stranger to SEEK is Northern Ireland based artist Friz. SEEK is thrilled to extend the invitation once again to Friz. Friz works in both traditional and digital media, and has a strong focus on spray painting. This year Friz is returning to depict the fascinating life of The Arctic Fox, Frances Leopold McClintock. At a very young age McClintock was offered the position of a firstclass volunteer on HMS Samarang, where he took his first steps in a career that would last over 50 years. He introduced exploration methods where

large regions of the Canadian Arctic coastline were mapped for the first-time. Ultimately McClintock’s contribution to exploration was the adoption of a scientific approach to the preparation and execution of such plans. McClintock led a fascinating life, and was hailedTH a hero for his endeavors. Breast Cancer Ireland pink army challenge raises €1.67m

THE 100k in 30 days fundraiser for Breast Cancer Ireland has raised €1.67 million, according to co-founder Niall Carroll.

Niall made the announcement on Facebook Live on the final day of the challenge, Wednesday June 30 at 9.30pm.

Nearly 23,000 people took part in the challenge which saw the #pinkarmy log 1,479,760.45km over the month of June.

The family-friendly challenge kicked off on June 1 and ran until the end of the month. Niall and his wife, Cara McAdam, launched the virtual fundraiser.

People were invited to walk, jog, run or wheel a total of 100km during the month of June to help raise funds.

Sinn Féin Councillor Antóin Watters has received confirmation from the HSE that Cooley doctor Pascal Malone is retiring at the end of June.

Patients who were under Dr Malone’s Ravensdale Practice approached Cllr Watters concerned they would be unable to find another GP. Cllr Watters and Ruairí Ó Murchú TD sought clarification from the HSE and Cllr Watters said “we got that clarification today and also confirmation that no patient

Fitzpatrick calls Rafferty takes positives from Irish Open experience on government 8

Caolan Rafferty took lots of positives from his involvement in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open which was played at Mount Juliet over the past week.

The Dundalk Golf Club player, who has been one of Ireland’s leading amateur players over the past few years, received his first ever invite to a European Tour event a few days before the event teed off and, while his interest ended after the second round, he admitted that he enjoyed every moment of the experience of rubbing shoulders with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington.

“It was a great week.

I got to compare my game with the top lads and found what I have to work on and what I’m doing that is good,” said Rafferty who shot two rounds of six over par 78 to finish on 12 under.

“Being able to say I played in the Irish Open is nice even though my

Caolan Rafferty. scores weren’t wonderful. Watching the top players on the range and being quite close to them was a nice experience and one I won’t forget.”

With his Dundalk Golf Club team-mate Eoin Murphy acting as his caddy, Rafferty arrived in Mount Juliet on Tuesday. After getting form-filling and his COVID tests out of the way, he played nine holes with Open champion Shane Lowry and his Ireland team-mate

“It was great to share the experience with Eoin and nice to have someone with me who I know well and get on with. It was a great experience for him too, to see the lads, be in that environment for a few days and see what it’s like on tour.

“Playing with Shane Lowry was another great experience. A member from Dundalk met Shane at the game between Louth and

Offaly in Navan and told him I was playing.

Shane straight away said: ‘Tell him to join me and Mark, we’re going out in a practice round on Tuesday,” Rafferty explained.

“He’s so sound and helped us out where he could. It was great to see him play and see how good he is.

Rafferty was drawn alongside two of the most experienced professionals in the field for his two rounds and admitted that he really enjoyed playing alongside Paul Waring and Edoardo Molinari.

“I couldn’t have asked for two better playing partners. They both made me feel very welcome and comfortable. They had a laugh on the way around too which was great.

Rafferty saw at first hand the small margins that make the difference between success and failure at the top level of professional golf. Molinari was two under at

the halfway stage and Waring was level par, but both missed the cut which fell at three under par.

Looking back on his own rounds, Rafferty felt he didn’t do himself justice as he had three birdies, 10 bogeys, one double bogey and one triple bogey over the 36 holes.

“I just didn’t play well. I didn’t play as well as I know I can, and I made some silly mistakes as well as getting a few bad breaks.”

Having completed his degree at Maynooth University, where he was on a Harrington Golf Scholarship, the Covid pandemic thwarted Rafferty’s plans to have a go at winning his Tour Card. However, he says that his experience at Mount Juliet is unlikely to have any influence on the future direction of his golf career.

“I’m not going to let two rounds of golf decide on what I do,” he said.

A number of eager young athletes from Dundalk St Gerard’s AC made the short trip to Bush for Day 4 of the Louth Juvenile Track and Field Championships on Sunday 27th June. First up, it was the turn of the U12 athletes to return to competitive action.

The girls’ 60m sprint contest required five heats, such was the large field of athletes.

Anna Duffy, Niamh Farrell, Chloe Cheshire, Megan Hughes, Aoife Murphy and Aideen Cumiskey lined up for DSG. The girls delivered some strong performances in the highly competitive heats which saw Anna Duffy and Aoife Murphy progressing to the semi-finals.

The semis were equally tight, with Aoife narrowly missing out on a place in the final shake-up. Anna Duffy progressed to the final and put in a very strong sprint to claim a 3rd place podium finish.

to act on rent crisis

Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick has called on the government to act now in relation to the ongoing housing crisis and help young families and first time buyers get on the property ladder.

Speaking in the Dáil Deputy Fitzpatrick outlined a number of potential solutions which he asked the government to consider to help improve what he described as a ‘housing crisis’.

“I am not going to play the blame game. I want to help by coming up with solutions to help young families to get homes. Today I want to raise the very important issue of mortgage affordability, particularly for first-time buyers.

“As we all know, this country is in the middle of a housing crisis and while it is true that the main issue is the supply of affordable housing, another issue that can be addressed immediately is the very restrictive lending rules imposed by the Central Bank.

“In my home town of Dundalk the rental price for a three-bedroom family home ranges from €1,300 to €1,800 per month. When for sale, those same houses are generally on the

market for between €200,000 to €270,000.

A quick calculation indicates that the average monthly mortgage repayment for these homes would be between €900 and €1,200. Under the current Central Bank rules, a young family is expected to save approximately €2,000 per month towards a deposit as well as pay rent of up to €1,800 per month.

“The Tánaiste will agree that this is not realistic. If a young family can afford to and can demonstrate that they are paying rent at a higher level than a comparable mortgage, it is clear that they can afford such a mortgage.

A simple solution is to amend the rules to allow first-time buyers to include the rent paid for a period of three years as a virtual deposit on their mortgage application,” stated Fitzpatrick.

“This would clearly demonstrate their ability to repay a mortgage and remove the draconian rules which mean they have to save for a deposit while also paying ridiculously high rents.

It does not add up and it does not make sense.

“The figures for my home town of Dundalk show that a young fam-

“The Government must act now to deal with this very serious issue.

People should be able to buy their first home but to earn €66,000 means, in many cases, two people working.

The Government is looking for solutions to the housing crisis and I am not here to play a blame game. Will the Government consider my suggestion regarding a virtual deposit?” asked Deputy Fitzpatrick.

Dundalk Lions Club Annual Golf Classic St Gerard’s athletes limbering up before competition.

Ben Eccles and Shay Casey lined up for the club. Ferdia and Shay progressed to the final, with Ferdia winning his heat and Shay finishing 3rd in his, while Ben narrowly missed out on a place in the final, finishing 4th in his heat. Ferdia romped home to victory in the final, taking Gold with a blistering run for the club’s second medal of the day.

The 600m middledistance events were equally competitive. The girls’ contest was next up, which saw another huge field of 21 athletes in a straight final. Anna Duffy was once again amongst the medals with

her second bronze medal of the day finishing third, with some strong performances also from Aideen Cumiskey, Chloe Cheshire, Aoife Murphy, Megan Hughes and Niamh Farrell. Ben Eccles represented the club in the boys 600m event, placing a respectable 9th.

The day’s field events kicked off with the Girl’s U12 Long Jump where Ann Duffy made it three from three with another bronze medal for her third podium finish of the day with a jump of 3.77m. Niamh Farrell, Chloe Cheshire and Aideen Cumiskey also jumped well. In the Boy’s Long Jump,

Shay Casey and Ben Eccles lined up for St Gerards. Shay closed out the contest with an excellent Gold medal winning jump of 3.54m, with Ben finishing in an impressive 5th place overall.

The final event was the Turbo Javelin.

Anna Duffy and Chloe Cheshire competed in the Girls’ event amongst tough competition and did well. In the Boy’s event, the Saints had two athletes on the winners’ podium to round off the day with Ben Eccles claiming silver and Shay Casey clinching Bronze. Ferdia McEvoy narrowly missed out on a medal in 4th place.

Amy’s Olympics dress rehearsal Local boxer Amy Broadhurst has her sights firmly set on Paris 2024 as her dreams of representing Ireland at the Olympic Games come closer to fruition.

Amy briefly harboured hopes of making it to the Tokyo Olympics and an often fiery rivalry with 2018 world champion Kellie Harrington made for some good headlines in the boxing press but ultimately it was Harrington who was selected for Japan in the 60kg category.

The Dundalk southpaw however is very highly thought of in the high-performance unit of the IABA (Irish Amateur Boxing Association) and behind the scenes the 23-year old has been given assurances that she is in pole position to represent

Those assurances from the likes of IABA high-performance director Bernard Dunne

were backed up with action last week with Amy being invited to fly to Tokyo to take part in a training camp with the Irish Olympic team.

That invite was gleefully accepted by Amy and last Monday she packed her bags before flying to Japan where she will spend a number of weeks training and sparring with some of the best talent in the world. According to Amy she was delighted when the offer was put to her especially given the fact COVID has curtailed any meaningful competitive action worldwide over the past 15 months.

“I was thrilled to be asked to go to Tokyo and it is such a huge opportunity for me. Obviously I would love to be going there as an Olym-

pian but this is the next best thing and I know that the place in Paris in 2024 is mine to lose. I haven’t boxed competitively in over a year at this stage and I really have itchy knuckles at this stage,” laughs Amy. “Before COVID the schedule was so packed and I was very busy and when the break came I actually enjoyed it for the first couple of months but after a while you start to get restless and I’m raring to get going again now. I am training full time at the minute up in Abbotstown as part of the highperformance unit and I am really enjoying it up there.

“Now I get a chance to go to Tokyo and train with some of the best boxers in the world and get to experience

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly announced an expansion of the vaccination roll-out programme to younger people from this week.

Demand high for 18-34 vaccine according to local pharmacies THE owner of a Dundalk pharmacy has said demand for the one-shot Janssen Covid-19 vaccine among 18 to 34-yearolds is “very high”.

Dermot Leavy of Leavy’s Pharmacy on Clanbrassil Street told the Dundalk Leader that within an hour of opening on Friday, July 2, 40 people had registered their interest in getting the vaccine.

“There is great demand for it. We are only providing the Janssen vaccine at the moment. There are five vaccines to each vial,” he said.

“Unfortunately I have had a constituent who had just gone out for a short time and came back to find her house being ransacked. They have no shame and don’t care if people are home or not.”

The Rock gets behind Dundalk’s special footballers

After a tough year and a lot less football, the players from Dundalk Special Olympics club were delighted to return to training earlier in the summer.

With all health regulations adhered to, they had hours of joy getting back on the pitch with their mates. Dundalk Gaels very kindly facilitated the training venue, as indoor training is not yet permitted.

To add to the excitement, the players were surprised with brand new kits to wear at competitions. The initiative for this started with Johnny Johnson, father of player Kyle “The Champ” Norton.

Club Chairperson, Ailish McArdle thanked Rock Celtic, Johnny and all involved for the extremely generous donation of the fabulous football kit. Ailish also mentioned that the club’s players will wear it with pride, when they represent the club in the Special Olympics

“Our Rock Celtic Fc 2005’s team did a “No Treat Donation” fundraiser about 4 years ago. They donated their pocket money, and we had a few collections at our games.

“We donated the money to the Dundalk Special Olympics that year, as we had a connection to the club with my son Kyle. We decided that we would keep going with the fundraising and decided to stick

with the Dundalk Special Olympics Club as they are our neighbors and are a small club that has done great things.
