Magnificent response to Dundalk’s “Northern Lights” By Lee Watters

ON Wednesday, January 31, the community of Dundalk and its wider area came together for the first night of the Northern Lights – Brigid 1500 lights show in Dundalk’s town centre on the Square. The demonstration attracted people from all over Louth and further afield. Speaking after the first edition of the ‘Northern Lights’, Sinead Roche from the Dundalk Tourist Information Office, discussed the overwhelmingly positive response

to the show. “There was great excitement and anticipation for all three shows on our opening night,” stated Sinead. “There were loads of people dancing, and some even had tears in their eyes. The consensus appears to be that the light show was a visual and audio marvel. Lasting about 15 minutes, the show combines Brigid’s historical and spiritual significance with the magnificence of today’s artistry and creativity. And, according to Sinead, the turnout was nothing short of what the show deserved.

“We are all very pleased with the turn-out, It was even more than we had anticipated. It was people from all over, from Louth, Carrick and a lot of people came down from the North, too. “We also know that a lot of people have travelled from abroad to visit Louth during the

wider Brigid 1500 festival, including people from America, Australia and across Europe. “I feel this event and the others taking place have reawakened the story of St. Brigid across the country, from the spectacular show in An Tain Arts Centre, to the art exhibition on Clan-

brassil street, to the St. Bridgid of Ireland Exhibition in the Museum. This show in celebrates the art and creativity of today’s day-and-age, and the audience reactions have been incredible to see.” Sinead also spoke about what the attraction has brought to the

schools in Dundalk. “We’ve also had a lot of schools visit the monument during the day, with some even taking their class photos in front of it! I remember one school came up one of the days and got pictures with their art projects with the arches in the background.

One girl in particular had such a beautiful art piece, it was just lovely to see.” Even though the Northern Lights Brigid 1500 show finished on Monday night, the incredible installation will remain in the Dundalk square until the end of the month according

to Sinead. “From Tuesday the 6th, the arches will be illuminated from 5pm to 10pm each evening, without audio. So, if you happen to miss the audio show, you can still enjoy the beautiful visuals of the arches for the weeks to come,” she added.

ADVERTORIAL

TINNITUS Awareness Week 5th to 10th February 2024 A RECENT survey states that almost 1 in 10 people in Co. Louth suffer from Tinnitus. The most recent European statistics (published in The Lancet Nov. 2021) for the prevalence of tinnitus in each country puts Ireland at 8.6% of the total population suffering from tinnitus and 0.6% of those suffering severely (which is half the European average). Since Covid-19 those numbers have risen. The figures show that 11,954 people in Louth suffer with Tinnitus (8.6% of the county’s population) while 834 suffer with severe tinnitus (0.6%). Tinnitus is the medical term for the sensation of hearing noise in the ears or head that does not have an external source. It affects approximately 430k people in Ireland and of these between 30k to 60k suffer severely. Major advances have been made in treating tinnitus in recent years. Tinnitus can be cured in some, but for most, treatment options aimed at reducing the volume and managing tinnitus related distress are very effective. This is the crucial message of TINNITUS AWARENESS WEEK. Most people who experience tinnitus are not overly bothered by it, but for some, it can have a significant impact on their quality of life. Tinnitus can lead to anxiety, depression and mental health problems. It may interfere with sleep, concentration and mood. Understanding and reassurance from the outset is essential. To know what tinnitus is, that it is common, that it may resolve by itself, that it is not commonly associated with underlying physical problems and that

there are a variety of management strategies to help, is very important. For anyone experiencing symptoms, even if they are mild, a visit to your GP and Audiologist is essential. Those living in the North East of Ireland are fortunate to have leading tinnitus specialists based here with clinics in Dundalk, Drogheda and Kingscourt. Ear Care Clinics have advanced clinical processes and have even developed their own technology for tinnitus calming and control. They can even boast some complete cures. They promise that 80% of those who attend for an evaluation can experience their tinnitus being lowered or even eliminated during their first consultation. Such is their confidence in the Ear Care Clinics processes, British Tinnitus Association executives and Widex UK management (a world leading hearing technology corporation) refer patients to attend Ear Care Clinics’ Director of Audiology, Frank McGrath for assessment. President of the British Tinnitus Association (ex-officio). Their objective is to raise awareness of tinnitus generally but particularly to promote the use of the phrase “For some, there is a cure for tinnitus and for most, there is significant, immediate and effective long term help available. Go book an appointment with an Audiologist”. For more information or to make an appointment you can contact Ear Care Clinics by phone at 041 9835510 or via their web site www.earcareclinics.ie. Their Dundalk clinic is based at the Carrick Road Medical Centre in Lis na Dara.

Cut VAT and PRSI rates for struggling SMEs by Easter say Regional TDs

DEPUTY Peter Fitzpatrick and the Regional Group of TDs are calling for the reduction of the current VAT rate of 13.5% to 9% for food businesses in the hospitality sector before Easter. “Adjusting the 8.8% employer’s PRSI threshold to a ceiling wage of €495.30 per week, will be a lifeline for many businesses”, says Deputy Fitzpatrick.. Alongside the Regional Group of TDs, Deputy Fitzpatrick have made these demands as part of its Private Members Motion to be debated on Thursday next, to support Small and Medium Enterprises, which are struggling to keep their doors open due to recent Government charges and in recognition of the vital role which these businesses play in our local economy and communities. According to Deputy Fitzpatrick:

Peter Fitzpatrick, TD. “Our motion calls on the Government to immediately establish a taskforce representative of small businesses with

GOT A

Government departments and agencies personally chaired by the cabinet minister to review the application of all Government controlled costs and to reduce Government charges and costs of doing business. By providing quarterly updates to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, this will ensure that this will be a taskforce for action, not talk”.. SMEs are a critical pillar of the Irish economy. The people who create and lead SMEs throughout the country are incredibly diverse, from familyowned businesses, rural-owner managers, traditional to high growth and technology startups. There are more than 1.2 million people employed by SMEs in Ireland representing 99.8% of active enterprise. Most of these enterprises are micro-sized enterprises employing less than 10 people.

Government policy decisions have increased the cost of doing business significantly, particularly in the SME sector. Many SMEs, including rural and regional businesses, are facing significant cost challenges. These increasing input costs due to increases in energy, inflation, insurance, cost of labour, national minimum wage increases, higher PRSI, plans for pension autoenrolment, extended sick-pay entitlements on top of VAT increases, along with many other input factors are making it very difficult for small businesses to continue trading. Deputy Fitzpatrick and the Regional Group members call on Government to address these business issues now before additional closures occur in the hospitality, retail, travel, food, drink, tourism, and entertainment sectors.

Vlad’s Red Star ticket appeal to Dundalk FC supporters

Vladimir Ljubinkovic has pleaded with Dundalk FC supporters to help him find an original ticket for the Dundalk FC v Red Star Belgrade match which was played in 1988 in Oriel Park.

By Lee Watters VLADIMIR Ljubinkovic, 44, is a Serbian football fan living in the town of Jakovo, located roughly 20km from Belgrade, Serbia’s capital. For the past 15 years, Vladamir has been avidly collecting football tickets to different games from throughout the years, eventually garnering around 4,000 different tickets. Since starting his collection, one ticket in particular has eluded Vladimir and with the help of the Dundalk Leader he is hoping that his prayers to find a ticket for the Dundalk V Red Star Belgrade game that took place in Oriel Park in 1988 can be answered. He has reached out to this newspaper to appeal to anyone who thinks they may have a ticket from this match lying around the house and who are willing to part with it to please contact him. He first started collecting tickets in the early ‘90s, when his older brother and uncle would give them to him after they had attended different games. He said

that during this time he “collected maybe 7 tickets” and stored them in one of his comic books. He then says that, unfortunately, his mother unknowingly threw out all of these tickets when cleaning out his room. Years later, Vladamir went on to complete a degree in Economics, and began working for Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer in 2008. He recounts that he needed to access online economics books during his daily work, and one day found himself browsing Limundo (a Serbian alternative to Ebay) wherein he came across a tab labelled “memorabilia”. According to Vladamir, his entrance into the hobby of sports memorabilia began when he got a ticket for the 1962 Fairs Cup Quarter Final between Red Star Belgrade and Espanyol. “I remembered my Red Star Belgrade tickets from years ago. I searched the site and found tickets from a 1962 Fairs Cup quarter final of Red Star Belgrade V Espanol.” This marked his first purchase of vintage

tickets in nearly 20 years. He continues, “I bought it for 42 Serbian dinar, which is equivalent to 50c in Euro,” he laughs to himself, “I was very lucky of course. It was my entrance into the hobby of Sports Memorabilia.” Red Star Belgrade are considered to be one of the finest footballing sides ever to grace Oriel Park and when they came to town in 1988 they arrived with no less than eight full Yugoslavian internationals. Unfortunately that gulf in class was evident on the pitch with the Lilywhites eventually losing 5-0 after going in scoreless at half-time. The return leg saw the Yugoslavian side win 3-0 to complete an 8-0 aggregate victory against Turlough O’Connor’s double winning side. Vladamir is asking that anyone who may have a ticket from the 1988 Red Star Belgrade V Dundalk match to please contact him at vljubinkovic@gmail.com or email editorial@dundalkleader. com if you think you can help.

Chamber express disappointment with news of PayPal job losses

THE Chamber was disappointed with the announcement of 205 jobs being lost in PayPal Ireland. Some of those jobs will be in Dundalk. We note the commitment given to engage in the necessary consultation period and the fact that redundancy terms will be enhanced. This is still a troubling time for the employees and families

of those affected. The job market in Dundalk is buoyant with many of our members experiencing staff /skills shortages. There are a number of organisations who will assist those to find new jobs or upgrade their skills from, Goals; DkIT ; LMETB; Chamber Skillnets and others. PayPal has confirmed to us that there will still be a signifi-

cant presence in Dundalk, circa 700 and that their support of community organisations and groups will continue. This was welcomed by Paddy Malone PRO and President Una McGoey. Both expressed their thanks to PayPal on keeping us informed, once the staff had been notified and for their commitment to the town into the future.

PayPal are seeing up to 205 redundancies between their Dublin and Dundalk sites.

“Terrible blow’ as PayPal announce redundancy plans

THE announcement by online payments giant PayPal that up to 205 redundancies are to be sought ‘is a terrible blow for workers and their families at the start of the new year’, Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has said. The Dundalk TD said he had been speaking to a company representative this afternoon and was advised that around 9% of the Ireland-based workforce will be affected. It is expected that the 30-day consultation period will start around February 7, with the redundancies, all of which are compulsory, to be completed by March 25, with the dates subject to change. It is understood that the cuts will affect PayPal teams right across the company’s Ireland operations with the redundancies being split equally between the former Dundalk site workers and those in Dublin. The redundancy announcement came 48 hours after it was revealed that PayPal, headquartered in the United States, was to cut their global workforce by 9%, affecting around 2500 people worldwide.

Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú. Deputy Ó Murchú said the company had advised him of their long-term commitment to Ireland and had told him that it remains their largest centre in Europe, with a 1600-strong workforce still employed after the redundancies. He said he had spoken to Minister for Enterprise Simon Coveney in Leinster House yesterday (Wednesday) and had raised the

possibility of the redundancies in the Dáil. But he said he was ‘dismayed’ by confirmation of the news, which comes on the back of job losses last year. Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘It is a terrible blow for the workers and their families, particularly at the start of the new year. It is imperative that PayPal fully consults with their staff in a meaningful way and puts in place the help and supports that it has promised for those who are affected. ‘All the arms of the State should be used to support those who are losing their jobs to find alternative employment and be assisted through this very difficult time. ‘The government must ensure that there is a ‘skills audit’ carried out on those who are being made redundant to ensure that their transition into other suitable employment is as seamless as possible. ‘This is not the first time that these loyal and hard-working employees have faced the uncertainty of a round of job losses and PayPal has to ensure that they are treated fairly and compassionately through this process’.

Junction at Hackballscross an accident waiting to happen SINN Féin activist and Local Election hopeful Jimmy Myers is ‘fearful someone will lose their life’ at a notorious junction in Hackballscross. Jimmy Myers said “The Turnpike on the main Castleblaney Road, Hackballscross has seen numerous accidents over the past few months alone and God knows how many ‘near misses’ there have been. The problem is that as a vehicle is travelling along the main road, they are on the junction before they realise it is there. Local people are aware of it but those from outside the area are not. “I, along with our TD Ruairí Ó Murchú, visited the area with a Louth County Council engineer to assess what could be done to make the junction safer. It was

Ruairí Ó Murchú TD with local election candidate Jimmy Myers. suggested that flashing lights on the approach to the junction would probably be the best solution and given the design of the junction, probably the most appropriate solution. I was then told that due to economic constraints,

there was no money in the budget to carry out the much needed safety works. “To say I am disappointed is an understatement. Once again we are falling victim to Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael policies and their con-

sistent underfunding of local authorities. I am not giving up on this, I will continue to push to get this junction made safer before there is a serious accident at it.” For further info please contact Jimmy Myers on 087 252 9043.

The Great Awakening Autumn arrives in the early morning; But spring first comes at the beginning of A winter’s night When, without any ostentation or warning The sky, about to darken, is suffused with A mysterious bright light And the curtain of darkness is somehow Suspended... There is perhaps no sunset. The branches have not yet begun to bud And yet... and yet... The day has not ended as it normally would, And although it remains cold, and will Sometimes get colder, Nevertheless as one grows older This first light, though slight, Is an intimation - a start, And opens the closed-in feeling that Lodges in the heart. Survey finds almost a quarter of Irish six-year-olds have a smartphone A RECENT study by CyberSafeKids and Amárach shows that 24% of all six-year olds have theirown smartphone. The survey also revealed that over 50% of Irish parents admit that they do not feel confident about teaching their children to stay safe online. Off the back of that survey a new online safety parental awareness campaign has been launched by CybersafeKids which is an online safety charity. The ‘Same Rules Apply’ campaign was launched this week and highlights the fact that it is just as important to supervise your children online as it is offline. CyberSafeKids has urged the government to make fundamental changes to keep children safer online and have suggested introducing a mandatory online safety education programme in school. Amárach surveyed 900 parents of children aged between 15-17 years, and the results of their research has show that 45% of children aged ten are allowed to use their smartphones in their bedrooms. Only 28% of parents use parental controls while 20% of parents felt that the benefits of the internet and social media outweigh the risks for children. The research

reveals that more than 80% of parents believe it’s their responsibility to keep their children safe online. Just over 25% of parents expressed extreme concern about the risk of online grooming, cyberbullying, and the risk of accessing pornography. Accessing disturbing content relating to selfharming, and addiction to social media were also cited by parents as concerns. One fifth (21%) of all parents of children aged 5-17 said their child has been purposely excluded from a group chat or online event and 18% said their child had been called offensive names. To support parents, CyberSafeKids’ campaign ‘Same Rules Apply’ highlights the need to approach parenting children online in the same way that we approach parenting them offline - emphasising that the same parenting rules should be applied to both worlds. CyberSafeKids is asking the Government for fundamental changes to keep children safer online, including introducing a mandatory online safety education programme in schools so that the conversation at home around risks and opportunities online is supported in schools and vice versa.

O’Murchú pleads for local groups to be involved in Covid enquiry SINN Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has written to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar asking him to ensure that groups such as the families of those who died in Dealgan House Nursing Home in Dundalk are consulted about the terms of reference for the Covid 19 inquiry. The Dundalk TD asked the Taoiseach directly in the

Dáil about the terms of reference for the forthcoming inquiry. He said: ‘Nearly 12 months ago, Mary Lou McDonald and David Cullinane wrote to the Taoiseach asking for the terms of reference of a Covid inquiry. ‘They heard nothing in response. A meeting with Opposition leaders in December was cancelled.

‘Finally, a meeting is to happen later this week. The Taoiseach has committed to engaging not only with political leaders but also with those who showed bravery, steadfastness and creativity through the Covid crisis. ‘Did he speak to Care Champions, which has been such a strong voice for those who lost family members?

Did he speak to the Irish Association of Social Workers, Safeguarding Ireland and representatives of the healthcare trade unions? ‘They must have their say in shaping this inquiry. I have spoken before on the need for a mechanism for families who lost loved ones in places such as Dealgan House’.

In response, the Taoiseach said: ‘I am going to consult with Opposition leaders this week. I had hoped to do so in December but my diary just was not able to do it because of the amount of other obligations I have, particularly in relation to foreign travel. ‘We will share the draft terms of reference with Opposition parties and discuss

their views on the composition of them. ‘Unfortunately I am not going to be in a position to engage personally with all of the different individual groups and stakeholders. We would never get this commission up and running. ‘If it was possible to schedule that many meetings I would but I just cannot. We

will find a mechanism to consult interested groups and stakeholders’. Following the Dáil interaction, Deputy Ó Murchú wrote to the Taoiseach asking for groups such as Care Champions, the Irish Association of Social Workers and representatives of the Dealgan families to be consulted about the terms of reference’.

Wine tasting fundraiser for Blackrock Community Centre THE Blackrock/ Haggardstown Community Centre was built in 1988 but has gone through extensive renovations over the past 5 years. It now has heating, energy efficient windows, insulation, LED lights, newly refurbished rooms, toilets, kitchens, dance

studio, conference room, large hall and a new fully drained carpark for people attending classes. It offers a variety of classes to interest everyone from toddlers to teens to the elderly in our community. It is a wonderful facility for Blackrock and Haggardstown.

Owned by the community and operated as a not for profit CLG by local volunteers. BHCC is supported by TUS & CE Scheme with no paid staff, so we are dependent on volunteers to keep the doors open. The event was organised to raise funds to

reduce €23,000.00 utility arrears, mostly electricity, and to provide a space for a mix and mingle night. Highlighting the centre as a hub for the whole community to enjoy. The Community really got behind the Wine Tasting fundraiser with

no limits to their generosity and good spirit. We would like to thank Quintessential Wines, all the stall holders, sponsors & volunteers. We would also like to thank Senator John McGahon, Councillor Robert Nash & Linus English, Ruairi O’Murchu TD, & Sion-

ainn McCann & Shane McGuinness for coming along and supporting us on Friday. Without their support and funding from Louth County Council, Louth Leader and LLDC, we wouldn’t have such an amazing, inclusive facility on our doorstep.

Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes, it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (Never known to fail). K.M.
