Never one to shirk a challenge, Dundalk athlete Collette O’Hagan is about to embark on her toughest task yet as she takes on two mammoth running fundraisers over the next few weeks. The 72 year old who has completed almost 800 marathons is one of the country’s most prolific runners and is about to take on a 48 hour running challenge and also 12 marathons in 12 days for the North Louth Hospice and Homecare Foundation.

The first challenge takes place this weekend

and will see Collette partake in a 48-hour running event, running continuously for 48 hours during which time she hopes to run over 120 miles. This event takes place in Omagh on the 11th to the 13th of March and will be the first of its kind in Ireland where Collette is hoping to create a new national record for females in her age category.

Challenge No. 2 is 12 marathons in 12 days which takes place on the Thames pathway in London from the 9th to the 20th of April as part of the Phoenix Continued on Page 2

Collette’s marathon charity effort

From Page 1 running UK marathon series, where Collette will be due to complete her 800th marathon during this event and will be joined on some of the days by her running friends from Ireland and the UK. As Collette herself says she doesn’t do easy and she is looking forward to pushing herself to complete both challenges which she is doing to try and raise money for a local organisation which is close to her heart.

“I’m doing these challenges to try and make money for The North Louth hospice and Homecare Foundation which

is a local voluntary organisation with over 150 volunteers which provides many valuable services for Cancer patients in our area, such as driving them to Drogheda or Dublin for appointments and cancer treatments.

“They have been very good to my family and many other families around town and I know it has been tough for them during the pandemic to get out and raise money for their services. My grandson and my husband had cancer in recent years, and we got such great support from the North Louth Hospice and this is my way of giving some-

thing back and saying thank you,” explained Collette.

Collette has taken part in 24 hour running events before but this weekend will be the first time she tackles 48 hours. According to the Bay Estate running legend she is hoping to set a new Irish record for her age category when she takes to the track in Omagh this weekend.

“I’m going there with a target of between 120 miles and 140 miles in my head which I think is achievable.

I want to set a record for my age group and set a mark that will be difficult to beat. I’ve never done a 48-hour running

event before, but I am looking forward to it and I have a plan laid out with regards to eating and drinking and getting myself into the right frame of mind. These ultradistance events are as much about being mentally tough as physically and you must go into them with a positive mindset.

“The twelve marathons in twelve days will take place next month and all going well I will run my 800th marathon during that event which is a nice personal milestone for me. I am very passionate about running and I think it is brilliant for your mental

health. I love just going out there and listening to a bit of music and being free with my thoughts. It’s a great time to solve any problems or issues you have in your life so by the time I finish the twelve marathons I should have solved all the world’s problems,” laughs Collette.

‘Vacant houses should be used to tackle crisis’ Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick has called on the Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien to bring in legislation which will enable local authorities to purchase vacant homes and upgrade them to a level where they could be added to the housing stock locally. He told the Minister that something needed to be done quickly as the government were already a long way behind their own targets.

“In the programme for Government many promises were made on tackling the housing crisis. I acknowledge that some progress has been made, but we are still a long way behind, even on the Government’s own targets. I have consistently raised the issue of vacant housing in many ur-

ban areas around the country,” stated Deputy Fitzpatrick.

“Towns such as Dundalk and Drogheda have far too many vacant houses. These vacant houses have the potential to make a real impact on the housing crisis if only the Government would put in place the necessary funding for local authorities such as Louth County Council to purchase these vacant homes and upgrade them in order that they can be added to the housing stock. When will the Government bring in the necessary legislation to enable these vacant homes to be purchased and upgraded to a level at which they could be brought back into the housing stock?,” he asked.

In response the housing

minister re-iterated his and the government’s commitment to solving the housing crisis while outlining plans to help improve the current situation.

“I thank Deputy Fitzpatrick for his question. The Government is absolutely committed to tackling the scourge that is vacancy and bringing empty properties back into use. The planning regulations were changed just a couple of weeks ago to broaden further the exemption on commercial properties being converted to residential use. The Minister of State, Deputy Burke, and I will bring forward, in the context of Town Centre First and the Croí Cónaithe towns and villages fund.

“That will provide people

with a grant to bring empty homes back into use as long as they live in and own them.

Furthermore, we are bringing forward a co-ordinated compulsory purchase order scheme managed by the Housing Agency on behalf of local authorities such as Louth County Council, which had previously been quite successful in that area - other local authorities, not so much. We will co-ordinate compulsory purchase orders in respect of more than 2,500 properties.

There is a particular issue in Drogheda on which we are working with the local authority, but we will bring forward our Croí Cónaithe cities fund to have brownfield site development in our cities,” promised Deputy O’Brien.

Concerns raised over McEntee junction

DUNDALK councillors have raised concerns over a junction on the Carrick Road.

According to Cllr Sean Kelly, visibility at the busy junction needs to be improved. He has also suggested that the junction be turned into a roundabout.

“There’s a traffic flow issue at that junction and it’s getting progressively worse,” he said.

Cllr Kelly raised the issue at the Dundalk Municipal District’s monthly meeting and asked for greenery on the traffic island at McEntee Avenue to be cut back.

“The traffic flow needs to be assessed and at the bare minimum a lot of the greenery on the traffic island needs to be removed,” he said.

Cllr Kelly added that motorists’ visibility is impacted negatively by the greenery. He said that motorists currently have to drive out to see oncoming traffic.

“It’s very busy and more houses are being built along the road. We need to have the correct infrastructure in place.”

Chairperson Maria Doyle has also raised concerns about the traffic island and has written to the local authority twice in a bid to fix the issue.

“It’s a very busy area

with many parents, children and elderly people crossing the road. There is also a lot of traffic congestion,” she said.

“Sean Kelly asked about a roundabout and I wrote to the council a couple of times about the planting at the junction.

“I asked the council to cut it back to try and improve visibility and do what we can in general to improve the flow of traffic.”

Cllr Doyle added: “I’d like the council to do an overall assess-

ment. It’s quite dangerous at the moment.”

However, Senior Executive Engineer Frank Magee dismissed the suggestion that the area be turned into a roundabout.

He explained that it would not be a suitable location for a roundabout and cited the extensive works and costs that would be involved in such a project.

Mr Magee added that the local authority would examine improving visibility at a junction.

Cllr McGeough condemns reckless destruction of ring buoy Sinn Féin Councillor Pearse McGeough has described the deliberate destruction of a ring buoy at River Walk, Ardee as ‘reckless and wanton destruction of life-saving equipment’.

Cllr McGeough said “the sun is making an appearance now which means that more people will be out and about walking along the picturesque paths along the River Dee. Along the way, there are ringbuoys which are essential life-saving equipment should someone fall into the river and find themselves in trouble.

“It is incredible that someone should not only take a ring buoy from its location but they have also set fire to it and destroyed it. This was no mean feat; a ring buoy is made of hard plastic so they would have needed an accelerant to reduce it to the state they left it in.

“I have reported it and sought its replacement but I would appeal to whoever did this to stop and think for a minute about the possible consequences of such a reckless action.”

O’Murchú attends Paris conference on Ukraine situation The response to the war in Ukraine was ‘front and centre’ of the latest COSAC (Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union) meeting held in Paris last week and attended

A member of the Oireachtas EU Affairs Committee, the Sinn Féin TD said the ‘savage invasion’ of Ukraine

by Russia had ‘changed utterly the world as we know it’.

He said the West ‘needs to learn from the failures to protect other people who are suffering under oppression, invasion and occupation and urged the EU to ‘play a positive role’.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘In the case of Ukraine, there is one aggressor – Vladimir Putin.

‘We need to break the Russian war machine and the oligarchs who support it’.

Ruairí Ó Murchú speaking in Paris last week. is facing a refugee crisis as a result of the war not seen since the 1940s and the Sinn Féin TD said: ‘We need to ensure that we have the finance and the resources to deal with that.

The war is having a ‘terrible impact’ on the lives of Ukrainians, including those in Ireland, many of whom have returned to their homeland to fight against Russian aggression, he said.

The Louth TD said: ‘It is a much smaller world now. There are people

from my own county returning to Ukraine to fight for their country and we have to salute their courage’.

Europe is at the forefront of the response to those fleeing the conflict, and Deputy Ó Murchú pointed out how the lessons from the pandemic, when the EU showed ‘solidarity and co-operation’ can be put to use in looking after refugees from this war.

He pointed in particular to the vaccination

procurement and distribution by the EU during the Covid 19 crisis in dealing with problems through co-operation but said that ‘more lessons need to be learned about the EU being more equitable to the developing world’.

However, he added that the war is also showing how volatile the reliance on fossil fuel, ‘particularly Russian fossil fuels’, is and the EU ‘has to accept that we need to move away from the depend-

ency on these and to ensure energy stability for all into the future’.

States need to do the ‘heavy lifting’ in relation to pushing renewable energy and climate change mitigations forward and the EU fiscal constraints that could hold this back need to be revisited, he said.

This needs, he added, to be coupled with ‘immediate mitigations’ regarding energy, including ‘block buying’.

He said: ‘We cannot have the fuel price hike cost of this war and the parallel climate actions heaped onto the backs of ordinary people’.

He also pointed out that while there continues to be ‘hope for an EU built on rights and justice, places like Yemen and Palestine ‘are two of the many places where there have been huge failures by the West, and the EU’.

He reiterated Ireland’s solidarity with Ukraine multiple times over the two day event.

Susan McGovern launches her first book A LOCAL woman is looking forward to the launch of her first children’s book on Tuesday, March 15.

Originally from Dublin, Susan McGovern lives in Headford, Mount Avenue, Dundalk. A retired teacher, she has lived in the town for the past 40 years.

“I taught for 30 years in O’Fiaich College Dundalk. I also taught in Dublin and on Achill Island for three years,” said Susan.

“I initially taught science and maths then further education.

I taught the nursing studies group anatomy, physiology and complimentary medicine.

“I retired early because my parents weren’t well. They had Alzheimers. When I retired, I joined a creative writing group in 2013 or 2014.”

The launch of Susan’s children’s book called ‘The She Team’ is due take place on Tuesday, March 15 at 6pm in McAteer’s ‘The Food House’.

‘The She Team’ is suitable for children aged six to 12 years of age and is Susan’s first

published book by Austin Macauley.

In addition, Susan has self-published three very different books.

There is a factual book, called ‘Care and Prevention of Urinary Problems in Cats’; a novel, entitled ‘Vanished’ and

a collection of short stories about people with Alzheimer’s and their families, called ‘Thanks for the Memories’.

“The She Team is socalled because it consists of four female cats and a female dog who are all rescued by the O’Brien family,” said Susan.

“They then form a team because they have all been abused in various ways by different people and they want to get back at these people and prevent them hurting other animals.”

She added: “It is a very authentic book because the characters of all five animals are based on past or current family pets and the two main human characters, Diarmuid and Eoghan, are based on my two grandsons of the same names.”

A nuclear gauge device (similar to the above) has been stolen.

The Department of Public Health HSE North East and the EPA’s office of Environmental Enforcement are urging people to stay away and not to tamper with a nuclear gauge device, which was stolen from a van in Drogheda Co Louth in the last 24 hours.

The device contains an encapsulated supply of caesium which is a radioactive source and may have health implications for anybody who might

open, break or tamper with the container.

Dr Keith Ian Quintyne, Specialist in Public Health Medicine North East advises members of the public that if they find this device, to “avoid tampering with it, and to promptly link with the local Gardaí and the Environmental Protection Agency.” Dr Quintyne added that “Radiation risks to the general public are low if container remains intact”.

Ardee concert band bingo resumes

The Ardee Concert Band weekly Sunday night Bingo resumes this week on March 13th 2022 from 8pm sharp, doors will open from 7pm.

The Band and Committee are reopening the old cinema doors for the 2nd time after 2 years of Sporadic Lockdowns, Isolations and Still Silence in the hall of the Bohemian Centre. In recent months the band have resumed full band rehearsals and have even held their recent successful Christmas concert back in December which was a real hit with their local community.

“The Bingo returns with a Jackpot of €2,600 up for grabs and we are really looking forward to seeing our old friends coming back to play the game as well as new patrons who will also be very welcome”, said Band PRO Sinéad Behan.

tyres. Some experts suggest rotating your tyres (i.e. swapping the fronts to the rear, and vice versa) in order to even-out wear and prolong tyre life.

However, in the interests of safety, we recommend using the leastworn tyres on the back axle, as loss of front grip (understeer) is much easier to manage than a rear-end slide (oversteer).

Check the level of tread on your tyres regularly – the legal minimum is 1.6mm but you should think about changing them when they are between 2mm and 3mm – as the less tread you have, the less effective the tyre becomes. And don’t forget to check tyre pressure too, and look out for signs of wear or damage which could result in a blow-out.

Drive smoothly Driving with ‘mechanical sympathy’ is

something you should practise at all times.

That means using the controls of your car while understanding how it works.

Doing so will reduce component wear and you’ll make your fuel go further. Simple things like using the steering wheel, gearbox and pedals smoothly are key, along with looking well ahead to reduce the need for sudden braking.

The more aggressive you are on the pedals the higher your fuel and repair bills are likely to be. Driving smoothly is kinder to your car and the environment, plus accelerating and decelerating in a controlled manner and anticipating the road ahead will save you pounds on your fuel bill.

That said, if you never rev your engine fully, carbon deposits can build up and foul the valves, intake mani-

fold and other parts, reducing efficiency and potentially causing a misfire.

You should therefore allow your engine to rev to the redline at least once every few hundred miles – but only when the oil is warm and you’re on a quiet road.

Diesel cars may also have problems with clogged diesel particulate filters (DPFs), which are designed to trap harmful exhaust emissions. A longer motorway run once a month will help clear them.

HAVE YOUR CAR CLEANED REGULARLY We all know people who never wash their car (and perhaps you’re one of them!), but keeping your car clean isn’t about vanity: it can significantly extend your car’s life, too.

Grit gets into moving parts and the chassis, leading to accelerated

wear and corrosion.

Bird droppings can play havoc with paintwork, and winter road salt is especially corrosive.

Automated car washes have stiff brushes that may leave fine scratches – plus they miss bits, too so having your car hand washed is usually much more thorough.

A yearly polish will provide a layer of protection and prevent rust from spreading.

It’s also important to keep the inside of your car clean with a microfibre cloth and to remove any dirt and crumbs from floor mats.

It sounds obvious but keeping your car clean and the bodywork sound will help maintain its condition and keep its value when it comes to selling and trading up to a new vehicle.

Keep the weight down Motor manufacturers are constantly looking

at ways to reduce the weight of their vehicles to increase the miles per gallon and to meet the emissions requirements.

So it makes a lot of sense for you to keep the weight carried by your car to a minimum wherever possible.

Carrying extra weight is a sure-fire way to dent your car’s fuel economy.

You’ll also put additional wear-and-tear on your tyres, brakes and suspension.

A practical solution is simply to remove any unnecessary objects from the car.

Start with the door pockets and glovebox, then look under the seats for any stray toys or drink bottles.

Moving on to the boot, clear out everything you don’t need.

Just remember to leave the toolkit, jack and locking wheel nut key in case of emergencies.
