Strums of comfort

Dundalk Ukulele Strummers to

DUNDALK Ukulele Strummers will perform a special concert in aid of Darragh Brangan at 12pm tomorrow (Thursday) outside Panama cafe at the Square in Dundalk.

Three-year old Darragh was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at the age of eighteen months early last year. The news came as a shock to parents Zoe and Gordon Brangan whose world turned upside down when they were given the news in Crumlin hospital. Zoe is originally from Dromiskin and is now living with husband Gordon and their three children Ellie (4), Katie (18 months) and Darragh (3) in Tara, Meath.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a degenerative muscle wasting condition, and while Zoe and Gordon live in hope, presently there is no cure. Darragh has severe muscle weakness which will progress, and as his parents watch their son achieve all his milestones a little later than most, they will likely have to watch as he loses them too.

According to Zoe, who works as a nurse in a GP practice, they had to get over the shock of Darragh’s diagnosis quickly and spring into action to try and raise money to help make their home suitable for Darragh and give him a space where he wasn’t limited by his surroundings.

“Darragh was just a bit behind reaching his milestones and we weren’t 100% happy with how he was progressing so we decided to get some tests done to make sure he was ok. I was 34 weeks pregnant at the time and when the results came back we were rushed to Crumlin for further tests,” explains Zoe.

“It took three months for confirmation to come back that he had DMD. To say we were devastated is an understatement. All we want is for our children to be happy and live full lives, the same hopes any parent has. We bought our dormer bungalow in Tara seven years ago and unfortunately it is completely unsuitable for Darragh given his condition. We didn’t qualify for any grants to do work in the house to make the necessary adaptations to our home as our combined income was over the threshold of €60,000.

“We had to come up with an idea for fundraising and I decided to do the women’s mini marathon last June. Thanks to the incredible generosity of people we raised just over €35,000. We want to use that money to promote independence for Dar-

Unfortunately the likelihood is that Darragh will be in a wheelchair by the age of ten years old. He can walk a bit at the moment but he falls forty times a day. He will always get up a little bruised but smiling which would break your heart. He doesn’t produce dystrophin which is a protein needed to stabilize muscles and unfortunately his condition will get progressively worse.

“We have had people reach out to us offering to host fundraisers for us and one of those includes Dundalk Ukulele Strummers. My

Mam, Ann McQuillan, who is originally from Marion Park in Dundalk, is a member of the Ukulele Strummers and she along with her friends in the group will play outside Panama Coffee at Market Square in Dundalk on Thursday at 12pm. If it’s raining they will instead play in the Longwalk Shopping Centre. We are so grateful to Dundalk Ukulele Strummers for putting on this free concert and myself Gordon and the family will be coming up for it on Thursday,” stated Zoe. “This has been an incredibly difficult time for us all but the generosity and warmth we have received has been the one huge positive

Worries over WuXi’s future in Dundalk following reports of potential sale

A WORRYING report in last weekend’s Financial Times suggested that WuXi Biologics are contemplating selling some of its European production facilities which would put the 600+ workers in the company’s Dundalk plant on red alert.

Wuxi operate a massive manufacturing plant at its plant at Dundalk Science and Technology Park, in the townland of Haynestown, Mullagharlin, Dundalk. The 43,432m2 greenfield facility consists of seven buildings including a three-storey manufacturing facility with a floor area of 21,020m², an 11,051m² laboratory and administrative building and a two-storey central utility building (CUB) with a floor area of 2,230m².

The IDA-backed company is a development and manufacturing drug company which mainly manufactures monoclonal antibodies and

recombinant proteins.

The construction of the state-ofthe-art manufacturing facility began in December 2018, and operations began in December 2021.

According to the report in the Financial Times, business has dried up in Europe this year as biopharma groups are becoming reluctant to do business with WuXi given the recent passing of the proposed Biosecure act in America which ‘which would ban drugmakers with US government contracts from using the Chinese groups’ services after 2032’.

Earlier this year WuXi revealed ambitious plans for a new development on a site of almost 20 acres at the Dundalk Science and Technology Park. The Dundalk Leader asked WuXi for a response to the reports of a potential sale but no reply was received at time of going to press.

we can take from our situation,” she added.

Patricia Prenty from Dundalk Ukulele Strummers is looking forward to playing on Thursday with her group and hopes that plenty of money can be raised for a very worthy cause.

“We regularly play fundraisers for local causes and we love getting out and performing in public. We are delighted to be able to put on a gig in honour of Darragh and it makes it all the more special given the fact that Darragh’s granny Ann is in the group as well as Ann’s sister in law, Phil Quigley.

“Between 35 and 40 of us meet every Mon-

day in the Lisdoo and there are people from their 20’s to their 80’s and everything in between in the group. We absolutely love it and can’t wait to play for the people of Dundalk. Hopefully people can spare a few euro to give towards a wonderful cause,” stated Patricia.

Budget 2025 deepens commercial crisis for hospitality sector

THE Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) has expressed deep disappointment with Budget 2025,

saying the Government has failed to respond in any meaningful way to the commercial

crisis facing hospitality food-led businesses. IHF President Michael Magner says: “The Budget

does next to nothing to address the enormous challenges confronting our sector while at the same time imposing further costs on thousands of hospitality businesses.”

“The decision not to reduce the hospitality VAT rate is shortsighted and extremely concerning given the stark commercial environment that food service businesses are operating under throughout the country. These businesses are facing a perfect storm as they grapple with rising costs, the impact of the 13.5% VAT rate and very tight margins. It is becoming increasingly clear that Government policies are now fundamentally at odds with the long-term interests of our sector

and wider tourism industry.”

“The half-baked measures announced today will have almost no impact for businesses that are struggling with ever-increasing costs, much of which are a direct result of the Government’s own economic policies. The bottom line is that inaction now poses an enormous risk to our wider hospitality and tourism industry which, as one of Ireland’s largest indigenous employers, supports over 280,000 livelihoods some 70% of which are outside of Dublin.”

“We are calling for an urgent re-assessment of the Government’s policy approach to Irish hospitality and tourism in order to stave off a growing commer-

cial crisis within the sector before it is too late. This must involve a direct intervention by the Government party leaders to address the alarming deterioration in the commercial model of hospitality food services.”

Commenting on the €4,000 business payment, he says “At just under €77 per week, this just demonstrates how out of touch policymakers in Government are with the commercial reality facing hospitality businesses. It falls so far short of what is needed, that it will have almost no impact.” Mr Magner noted that most small regional hotels with more than 30 bedrooms would be disqualified from this minimal level of support.”

Great excitement at Junk Kouture Finals in St Vincents

THERE was great excitement in St. Vincent’s School this week as fifth year students Madeleine Cristal, Ellimay Sharkey and Rebecca O’Hagan packed up their wonderful creation ‘Rockin Around’ and made their way to the RDS in Dublin for the 2024 Junk Kouture City Final. The Christmas inspired costume was made last year as part of their Transition Year program. They were fortunate to qualify for the North Regional Final which took place in April in the Helix Theatre, where they progressed to the National Final. They were one of 60 costumes to make it to the final, from almost 1,200 entrants.

While Madeleine performed beautifully on the night, the competition was fierce and they narrowly missed selection for the World Final which will be held later this year. Their Art teacher Carmel Clyne said ‘While the team are disappointed not to make it through to the World Final of this International Competition, I am so proud of their achievement.

They worked incredibly hard last year on their design and the standard in the RDS was very high. We have had many students take part in Junk Kouture over the years and we are looking forward to next year’s competition already.’

Maxi’s final journey to Oriel Park

FRIENDS of Mark ‘Maxi’ Kavanagh took to the stand in Oriel Park to say goodbye to one of the town’s favourite sons. Following his funeral mass in the Church of the Holy Redeemer the funeral cortege made its way to Oriel Park where Mark had cheered on Dundalk FC through good and bad times for almost half a century.

As the hearse made its way onto the pitch, the crowd in the main stand erupted into spontaneous applause while Dundalk FC players stood in the middle of the pitch holding a banner which read ‘Maxi, Dundalk Loves You More Than You Will Know’.

Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’ the unofficial anthem of Dundalk FC played over the tannoy as Maxi’s

friends and family led a round of applause. Nine years ago Maxi helped launch the career of talented local singer singwriter David Keenan thanks to a viral video which saw Keenan play his song ‘El Paso’ in the front of Maxi’s taxi after a night out. That song concluded proceedings on Thursday in Oriel Park and in one of the most poignant moments of the afternoon, tears were shed as Maxi’s voice was played over the tannoy as he belted out his famous phrase ‘C’mon the town’. As the crowd cheered once more, Maxi departed Oriel for the final time as he was brought to his final resting place in Dowdallshill cemetery. A fitting send off for one of Dundalk’s greatest characters.

Anti-social behaviour has potential to escalate ‘out of control’

ANTI-social behaviour by a small group of young teenagers in housing estates in Dundalk has ‘the potential to escalate totally out of control’, Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has said.

The Dundalk deputy, along with his party colleague, Councillor Kevin Meenan, has been working with Gardaí, youth leaders, residents and shop workers over the last number of days to bring about an end to what he called ‘a spate of incredibly serious anti-social behaviour’ that has seen cars egged and houses attacked with fireworks put through letterboxes.

Between four and 12 teens, thought to be aged between 13 and 16, have been engaged in an escalating campaign of intimidation, threats, anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and thefts from shops for the last three weeks.

The issues initially started in Muirhevnamor with some users of Dundalk Sports

Centre, including young people with disabilities, being verbally abused and witnessing the youths attacking cars as they were leaving the centre.

Last week, the group started to target Greenacres and the shops in the area, with items being stolen, cars being egged and houses being attacked. Members of the public, including other teenagers, women and older people, have been severely verbally abused and threatened in a number of ‘sinister’ incidents over the last week.

Deputy Ó Murchú and Cllr, Meenan have been working in both Greenacres and Muirhevnamor over the last week trying to stop the anti-social behaviour.

The TD said: ‘Cllr. Meenan and I have been in touch with many of those who have been affected by the outrageous behaviour of this small group of teenagers who seem to have been running amok for the last couple of weeks.

‘We have spoken to community Gardaí, residents who have had fireworks put through their

letterboxes and eggs thrown at their properties, shop owners and workers who have been threatened by these teenagers who have stolen items from their stores, car owners who have had their vehicles egged.

‘And while there have been increased Garda patrols in the areas affected, we have also become aware of longer-term issues where specific teenagers have been threatened and abused by these youths.

‘It is utterly unacceptable what has been happening and people are really concerned and worried about what’s going to happen when these teenagers are on the streets, usually between 7pm and 10pm.

‘There seems to be a core group of young people involved, and we are pleading with parents to be aware of where their kids are and what they are doing. We will continue to engage with all those affected and the Gardaí to bring about an end to this’.

Rally outside Court House to address lack of mental health services in Louth

LOCAL Independent

Candidate for the forthcoming General Election, Ryan McKeown organised a meeting outside Dundalk Court House last Saturday to address what he describes as ‘the shocking shortage of funding for Mental Health services in our county’. Ryan who will stand in the next General Election for Independent Ireland says action needs to be taken now before somebody else loses their life due to mental health issues.

“I wanted to hold a meeting in Dundalk to address the shocking standard of care in Louth for people struggling with mental health issues. We must act now to prevent it.

“The meeting was designed to send a clear message to the political establishment that they have failed so many peo-

ple and their families. We had guest speakers on the day sharing their stories. We asked anybody attending to stay peaceful as this is a time for the community to unite and raise our voices. We will continue this fight until real change is made.

“I invited politicians, but none of them showed up. It’s clear

they’re not on the same page, and they don’t want the same things. Shame on them. They’re not even knocking on doors or meeting the people they’re canvassing at one in the morning.

“Actions speak louder than words, and Saturday’s protest was just the beginning. I’m not backing down until we

have the right, efficient services in place. I’m not pulling a Sinn Féin stunt of simply highlighting issues—I have the solutions.”

“CAMHS is the same. We have kids being refused entry to CAMHS because of lack of counsellors and it’s time we all unite as a community and say we’ve had enough,” stressed Ryan.

Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú and Cllr Kevin Meenan.

ORIEL FUNDRAISING EVENTS KICK OFF

WITH all the turbulence recently at Dundalk FC, the black and white army has been galvanised into action. Football fans from across the town and much further afield have been showing their support and backed a successful multi-platform fundraiser organised by The 1903 Dundalk FC Supporters Club.

Money raised so far has totalled almost thirty thousand euro and continues to grow.

Chairperson of The 1903, Orla Crilly, explained that this is just the tip of the iceberg in what is needed for the development of Oriel Park but is a step in the right direction.

“Money so far has been used to support all seven teams who play under the banner of Dundalk FC. It has been vital that we provide the practical support of getting all teams to their fixtures around the country.

sive but no child should miss out on competing in their chosen sport because of trouble behind the scenes at the club.”

“This town now needs to step up and back all the fundraising initiatives rolled out by this independent supporters club.

“We will work tirelessly to make sure Dundalk FC fans are never put back in the position that we were in recently, almost losing our club.

“Let’s take that fear and use it as a catalyst for change at the club. As fans, we don’t get to sit back anymore and hope that a white knight saves us. By actively fundraising across a wide catchment area we can strengthen our posi-

tion as a club and build something stable that we can be proud of, for generations to come.

“I call on all the fans to start their own fundraisers and start building a pot of money that we can use for projects that everyone will benefit from.

“Currently, we are working on many aspects of building a secure club that will benefit the town as a community.

Everything will need funding and we want people to get creative with their ideas for events and let us know how we can help you make it a success.

“Every bit helps and no matter how small, we will make sure that the money goes to where it’s most needed and benefits the community as a whole.

“We will also be engaging in some larger fundraising ideas but will need everyone to give their support to make them a success. If you can invest a small

amount of time in helping us, we can really make a difference going forward.

“When you look at clubs like Sligo, who have an ethos of great fundraising, and have a very stable business model, it’s definitely something to strive for.”

Three imminent fundraisers are organised to have broad appeal.

“October 11th, It’s a barrel of laughs with The El Paso Comedy Club in Toales from 8pm. Five comedians for only €10. Profits going to the 1903 Supporters Club.

J. Parker’s promise to bring a Dutch of class to local gardens

J. PARKER’S Dutch Bulbs is a family-run business that has been supplying quality flower bulbs, plants and seeds to gardeners in the UK since 1933. With a long-standing tradition of providing the highest quality flowers, they have become one of the UK’s leading garden suppliers and are managed by the original family.

Martin Parker flew to England from his small hometown in Beverwijk, Holland, to start a mailorder bulb business in 1933. He came from three generations of bulb growers and exporters in Holland and felt ready to start a new venture in England

Since the implementation of Brexit, the company have not been able to send products to their customers in Northern Ireland due to trade restrictions and the required phytosanitary checks.

To get around this problem JP Parkers decided to build a brand new website and open up a brand new warehouse in the Republic of Ireland to cater for their customers on the island of Ireland. After looking at a number of potential sites Dundalk was eventually earmarked as a perfect location to set up the new branch of their business. As well as the location of Dundalk and the availability of rich agricultural ground there was also one other

factor which did the town no harm when it came to choosing where to open the new warehouse for JParkers. Edward Doherty, offline marketing manager at J. Parker, knew Dundalk well given the fact that he worked in the retail park in town twenty years ago in what was then called Atlantic Homecare (now Wood-

ies. Speaking to the Dundalk Leader last week alongside Alex Woolard (Chief Operations Officer for J. Parkers) Edward fondly recalled his time in Dundalk.

“I absolutely loved my time in Dundalk. I was working in Atlantic Homecare and living on the Red Barns Road. I enjoyed working in the town and I think it’s fair

to say I enjoyed the social scene as well around that time,” laughs Edward. “With Brexit we faced a big problem as we could no longer serve our loyal Northern Ireland customers so we had to work around that and the solution we found was to open up a new warehouse in the Republic of Ireland and create a brand new on-

line website specifically for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland,” he explained.

“We chose Dundalk and we are delighted with that choice as we have been welcomed with open arms and have received great support from the local chamber and various people who helped us get up and running. We have a warehouse in Mountpleasant and we started trading in August and so far it’s going great,” stated Alex. “Every single

“We see Dundalk as an area we can develop the business over the next five to ten years and we have plans to work with Irish nurseries and eventually offer Irish peole Irish products. In Manchester where the company was founded and is based now we do a lot of work with local charities and we intent to do similar in Dundalk and be a presence in the community and give something back locally. As well as being able to buy the highest quality bulbs on J. Parkers new website www.jparkers.com. Irish customers can also receive top quality tips to ensure they give their bulbs every chance of reaching their full potential. There are almost 800 products currently listed on the Irish website and a world of choice for any local gardeners to start getting their gardens ready for spring.
