There were joyous scenes around Dundalk this week as two of the town’s favourite daughters returned from the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with another medal to add to their evergrowing collections. Kate O’Connor and Amy Broadhurst have been reaping the rewards of late after many years paying their dues and both athletes were in sensational form with Kate bringing home the silver medal in the Heptathlon while Amy claimed Gold in the Lightweight category in boxing. Kate was given a garda escort on Monday afternoon as she returned from Dublin airport to Belfry Drive to her family home with her dad and coach Michael, where hundreds of friends and family and young athletes from her club, St. Gerard’s AC, were waiting to welcome home their hero! From Page 1 Speaking ahead of her daughter’s arrival proud mother Valerie O’Connor expressed her delight with her daughter’s achievement after she finished second, narrowly behind World Champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson. “I was watching it at home and it was very nervewracking but when it was confirmed she had won silver we were obviously ecstatic. She works so hard and she has dedicated herself to athletics since she was about 8 or 9. At competitions, even as a kid she knew who the best girls at other clubs were and how much she would need to improve to try and beat them. In recent years she has stepped up her preparation again and she does everything right to get that extra bit needed to compete at the highest level. From her physio to her nutrition to the way she prepares and recovers before and after events she is doing everything that is asked of her. It’s a proud moment for us all to see everybody come out today and welcome her home,” added Valerie. Cycling community rally to help Dickie 4

Dickie Newell with his wife Patricia.
A fund-raiser launched just six days ago has raised over €20,000 for Dundalk man Dickie Newell who was involved in a life-changing accident on his bike. The Gofundme fundraiser, organised by Cuchulainn Cycling Club, has set €30,000 as its goal in a bid to raise enough money to adapt Dickie’s Lisdoo home. Dickie is a long-standing member of Cuchulainn Cycling Club in Dundalk and on 14 April 2022 he came off his bike during a training spin and sustained serious injuries. He is paralysed from the chest down and has limited power in his right arm. He is currently in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. He will need respite care for the rest of his life. Before Dickie can return home, significant adjustments will need to be made to his house. Dickie’s son, Ricky said: “We didn’t expect it at all to raise so much money so quickly. It’s amazing to have all of these people pulling together to help us. “Adjustments have to be made to the house and the price of timber is very high at the moment. We have to try and get it organised. “My Dad’s in rehab at the moment. He’s been in hospital over four months and is due to come home on August 29 please God.” As a club, Cuchulainn is looking to raise much-needed funds to help Dickie and his family at this tough and challenging time. “With your help, we can ensure that Dickie returns to a home adapted to his needs,” said Francis Lafferty, Chairman Cuchulainn Cycling Club. “We would be most grateful if you could make a donation to this very worthy cause. “We are also running a charity cycle on Sunday, August 21. Full details of this will be available on the Cuchulainn Dickie Newell with his wife Patricia and son and daughter Ricky Facebook pages and Instagram account.” and Rachel.
Pilot project tackling declining vocations ‘quite interesting’ says local priest By Tamara O’Connell
Dundalk priest Fr Derek Ryan has said a new pilot project which aims to help the Catholic Church tackle declining vocations is “quite interesting”. The Holy Family Parish Church priest told the Dundalk Leader that under the project, which is being rolled out in Cork and Ross, there will be an emphasis on the “family of parishes”. “If you look at it in a Dundalk context, it’s a town which exists in the larger Archdiocese of Armagh,” said Fr Derek. “A number of parishes are being brought together in a family of parishes or a cluster of parishes. “The idea isn’t new but the language has changed. It’s the same principle. It’s already
Fr Derek Ryan (above) is also a GAA referee.. in some way happening in Dundalk without that labelling.” Fr Derek added: “There are four parishes in Dundalk – St Patrick’s, the Holy Redeemer, the Holy Family and the Redemptorist. “The family of parishes idea is already happening across Dun-
dalk and the four parishes are working very well together. “There is a movement of clergy happening in Dundalk which is new across the parishes. Things are changing, there’s no doubt about it.” He continued: “There is a training centre here in Dundalk for new
priests called the Redemptoris Mater Seminary. “Around two or three men are ordained to the priesthood each year at the Redemptoris Mater Seminary. “When they are ordained, those men commit to the Archdiocese of Armagh for five years and then they are able to work abroad if they choose.” Fr Derek said that he doesn’t want the Redepmtoris Mater Seminary to give “false hope” to the people of Dundalk. “We do have a situation of an ageing clergy. Many clergy are approaching retirement and vocations are at an all-time low,” he said. “In no way will Maynooth be able to fill the gaps in ten or 15 years. There will be a bigger reliance on lay people to assist with various roles.”

Cllr. Sheridan raises water discolouration with Irish Water Dundalk Leader 10th August 2022
cllr. John Sheridan has contacted Irish Water about significant water discolouration on the Dundalk Supply over the weekend which supplies the town and parts of Mid Louth. “This is now the second summer of this water discolouration. I had raised this before the summer as I had information that the problem was likely to reoccur this year. Despite assurances from Irish Water prior to the summer that a flushing programme would be taking place to mitigate the problem, we have significant discolouration again.” “The flushing programme has been well publicised and I have seen the flushing taking place personally, but despite this, again there was major discoloration over the weekend. I was amazed at the response to a post I had on social media with responses from right across the network. People are incredibly frustrated about this, particularly those caring for people who are sick and those with young children and babies” “I have also noted that discoloured water is being reported in villages like Blackrock and Dromiskin that have already been flushed by Irish Water which is very concerning” When asked by the Dundalk Leader to make a statement on the ongoing issues in relation to the quality of the local water supply, Irish Water responded as follows. “In Ireland, drinking water can pass through several kilometres of pipework before
it reaches homes and businesses. Some of this pipework is constructed from cast iron and, depending on the area, can be up to 100 years old. Old cast iron mains typically suffer from corrosion and as a result, sediment from these pipes can be dislodged during repair or maintenance works, causing temporary discolouration of the water / the water to appear brown before it reaches customers’ taps. This is not harmful to health and usually running the tap for a number of minutes will restore the clear colour. More information can be found at https://www.water.ie/ water-supply/supply-issues/discoloured-water/. “Most of the time, the drinking water passes over this sediment unchanged. However changes in flow, pressure or direction can dislodge this sediment and carry it through to your tap. This can cause water to appear as brown or orange in colour. This discolouration
is more likely to occur when repair or maintenance works are being carried out on the public water supply pipes and if you run your cold tap in the kitchen, for a few minutes the discoloration should clear. “Irish Water, working in partnership with Louth County Council, continues to progress a programme of watermains flushing to safeguard the water supply for customers in Dundalk and its environs. These essential flushing works are required to clear manganese sediment from the distribution network and reduce the likelihood of future discolouration issues at the customer tap. These flushing activities are part of an overall action plan to address discolouration issues associated with high manganese levels found in the source water that feeds into Cavanhill water treatment plant. A programme of works at the Cavan Hill water treatment plant has already been carried out
including the installation of an interim Manganese treatment system to reduce manganese levels in the final treated water. Following works, customers seeing discoloured water coming from their cold kitchen tap are advised to run the tap for a few minutes to restore the clear colour. If the colour does not restore to clear, cus-
tomers are advised not the drink the water as a precaution, and should contact the Irish Water customer care helpline, open 24/7 on 1800 278 278 or via Twitter @IWCare. The latest updates on these works will be available on the Supply and Service Updates section of the Irish Water website,” concluded the statement.

A Dundalk TD has asked the HSE to clearly state when a day care service for older people in the town is to reopen. Sinn Féin’s Ruairí Ó Murchú has written to the HSE to ask them when the St Anne’s service, which operates out of St Oliver’s Community Hospital on the Dublin Road in Dundalk will reopen. The day care service was closed because of Covid 19 restrictions in 2020, but has not yet re-opened. In correspondence earlier this year, the HSE advised Deputy Ó Murchú that they were looking to reopen it this month, but this has not happened. The Dundalk TD says that he has been advised by charities that work with older people in Louth that they understand the day care service will not be opened for the foreseeable future. This is, Deputy Ó Murchú said, ‘a dreadful situation’ for older people and their families who need day care services as soon as possible. He said: ‘Late last week, I wrote to the HSE again seeking an update on when the St Anne’s service will be open again. I had been advised by charities working in the town
that they understand that the HSE will not be reopening the service for the foreseeable future. ‘Earlier this year, the HSE advised me they were aiming to open the service by August, but we are a week into the month and there have been no updates. ‘Staffing may well be an issue, but the HSE has to do everything in its power to ensure that this service, which has been closed for more than two years, is reopened. ‘It provided a social and recreational outlet for older people and respite for their carers and families. It is critical that everything is done to get it reopened. ‘Older people were disproportionately affected by Covid 19, both physically from the virus and socially because of the isolation and loneliness brought on by the lockdowns and the closure of services. ‘They should not be an afterthought for the HSE – they should be at the forefront of health officials’ minds’.

20% less pubs in Louth now than in 2005 states new report
A new report from the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI) has shown a stark decline in the number of pubs doing business throughout the country since 2005. The Irish Pub: Stopping the Decline report, based on the group’s analysis of Revenue license data and including an economic and social analysis by Dublin City University (DCU) Associate Professor Emeritus and economist Anthony Foley, shows a 21.2% decline in the number of pubs in Ireland from 2005 to 2021 while locally that figure is a decline of 20.3%. All 26 counties experienced declines in pub numbers through the 16-year period. The largest decrease was seen in Laois with 30.6% less pubs since 2005. This was the only county with a decrease
of 30% or more. The lowest decrease was in Meath with 1.4% less. Meath was followed by Dublin, reporting a decrease of only 4.3%. All the remaining 23 counties had decreases greater than 10%. Three counties, Carlow (10.4%), Kildare (13.6%), and Wicklow (10.1%) showed decreases between 10% and 14.9% while Cavan (17.2%), Kerry (15.3), Kilkenny (18.1%), Monaghan (19.8%), and Wexford (17.2%) were in the 15% to 19.9% decrease bracket. All the remaining counties had decreases of more than 20%. Six counties, Clare (24.7%), Galway (20.6%), Louth (20.3%), Sligo (24%), Waterford (23.5%), and Westmeath (24.4%) were in the 20% to 24.9% decrease band, while nine counties Cork (28.5%), Don-
egal (26.3%), Leitrim (26.4%), Limerick 29.1%), Longford (25.7%), Mayo (25.1%), Offaly (29.9%), Roscommon (28.3%), and Tipperary (26.3%) saw decreases between 25% and 29.9%. According to an economic and social analysis of the numbers, economist Anthony Foley notes that public houses
contribute to the culture and vibrancy of villages, small towns and rural areas in many ways. They contribute to tourism and provide an extensive network of physical facilities and services needed by tourists and locals. Foley cites concerns for the impact of the decline on rural Ireland, when taken in the context of wider challenges facing areas outside Dublin. When you consider decreases in the number of post offices, full bank branches, Garda stations, local retail enterprises and a wide range of other services and facilities, there are concerns about the commercial capability of small towns and villages with large levels of commercial building vacancy. According to the analysis, Foley suggests there is likely to be a negative so-

Foley cites a number of reasons for the decline including non-replacement of pub operators on retirement or death, low levels of business volume and economic sustainability, regulatory changes such as tighter drink driving laws and enforcement allied with weak or nonexistent public transport and population change and distribution, among others. Paul Clancy, DIGI member and CEO of the Vintners Federation of Ireland, described the report as ‘alarming.’ “1,829 rural pub closures represent businesses that provide jobs, a hub in the local community for socialising and community i

Gum Litter Taskforce Roadshow visits Dundalk
On Friday 22nd July, the Gum Litter Taskforce Roadshow hit the streets of Dundalk following the launch of its national summer campaign on 20th June. In this program, the GLT will collaborate with Louth County Council and local community groups to promote the responsible disposal of gum litter in the county’s areas. Over the summer months, the roadshow will visit over 30 local authorities across all four provinces to promote community-led education and awareness on gum litter. Members of the Gum Litter Taskforce for Louth include representatives of the chewing gum industry; the Department of the Environment; Food and Drink Industry Ireland, Louth County Council representatives and members of local
community groups. Following on from campaigns in previous years, the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications, Food Drink Ireland and the chewing gum industry highlighted the initiative’s success to date: A remarkable 70% reduction in chewing gum litter since the campaign began in 2007. Gum now accounts for 8% of all litter in Ireland compared to over 26% in 2007. Just over one in four (27%) claim never to have dropped gum highlighting continued importance of gum litter awareness campaign to enact behavioural change. Speaking ahead of the campaign, Minister Ossian Smyth, said: “The success of the Gum Litter Taskforce
demonstrates the forward-thinking, joined up approach of industry, local communities and local government that is necessary to further drive the objective of changing the public’s gum disposal behaviour.” To support the campaign, the GLT has created an education programme called ‘Bin It!’ that encourages students to dispose of litter responsibly, particularly gum litter. Approximately 60 performances will be delivered annually to primary schools throughout the country, with an aim of visiting 180 schools by 2025. Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Councillor Conor Keelan, who attended the launch, said “The message couldn’t be simpler when Cllr Keelan, & Members of the Rehab group- Brendan O’Friel, Jimmy Philips Pauline Bromit comes to gum and indeed all lit- ley Nail Gorman Connor Halpenny. WOMEN and teenage girls across Co Louth are being encouraged to get active and take part in HER Outdoors Week. The aim of HER Outdoors - which is running from Monday, August 8 until Sunday, August 14 – is to help more females to reap the benefits of being in the outdoors. HER Outdoors also aims to bring visibility to the opportunities for females to get involved in outdoor physical activity. The week is aimed at offering an opportunity for all females to escape to the outdoors and try something new. “This initiative was devised during Covid-19 times when people recognised the outdoors as being more widely available than say a gym. The idea really took off last year,” said Barry Casey, Louth Local Sports Partnership. “There are great opportunities for people in the local community to experience activities in the outdoors. Children from 13 upwards start to

Irish singer songwriter, Declan Nerney unveils his newest song, ‘The Great Wee County Louth’ with a live concert at An Táin Arts Centre on Friday 9th September at 8pm. Commissioned by AnTáin Arts Centre during the Covid-19 pandemic, ‘The Great Wee County Louth’ is an uptempo tune in the typical Nerney style. Director of An Táin Arts Centre Paul Hayes says: “Lockdown gave
us the opportunity to work with many new artists. We heard Declan had written a song about County Louth, so we funded him to record it. We are really looking forward to hearing it for the first time in front to a live audience on our main stage.” Declan Nerney was born in the heart of Ireland in Drumlish Co. Longford,at a unique period of time in the music scene worldwide. A revolution in rock
and pop brought us The Beatles, Elvis, and the Rolling Stones, while here in Ireland the magnificent showband boom was about to explode. “The Great Wee County Louth” is his latest song. Tickets are €22 and €20 concession, plus €1.50 booking fee per ticket per person. You can book your tickets from An Táin Arts Centre’s Box Office.

€30,000 funding for upgrade to Omeath-Carlingford Greenway
r
r n
The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD has announced funding of almost €6 million to develop 200 outdoor adventure projects across Rural Ireland including which includes €30,000 for an upgrade to the Carlingford-Omeath Greenway Upgrade. The investment, under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), is designed to provide a major boost to local economies by attracting visitors and furthering Ireland’s reputation as a destination for adventure tourism. Announcing the funding Minister Humphrey’s spoke about the importance of getting out and getting active especially now when the sun is shining.
“We’re at the height of the Summer and whatever the weather I know families are getting out and enjoying Ireland’s great outdoors. The funding I’m announcing today will support the further development of our greenways, blueways and hiking trails making them even more enjoyable places for families to
visit. Every county will benefit from today’s announcement so if you’re a walker, a swimmer, a cyclist or even a fisherman – check out the list to see what’s happening in your county. Getting active in the fresh air outdoors can be a tonic for the body and soul and this was brought home to us all during the pandemic. Some
of these amenities are often hidden gems on our doorsteps so I’m encouraging people to get out and discover them over the rest of the Summer.” Senator Erin McGreehan welcomed additional funding of €30’000 for an upgrade of the Carlingford Omeath greenway. “The Louth Senator said, “The Carlingford greenway is a brilliant local amenity and I’m delighted to see this funding for an upgrade of the development. “The greenway not only provides an amenity for local people to be active and enjoy their local area, but it also attracts tourists and it’s important we continue to invest in rural attractions to drive local economies across Louth.
Killanny playground roadside Sinn Féin councillor Pearse McGeough has received a commitment from Louth County Council that the road adjacent to the Killanny playground on the road to Carrickmacross will be repaired in the very near future. Cllr McGeough said “I raised this particular road with the Council back in January fear-
ing subsidence and on a recent visit to the area I was shocked to see how rapid the deterioration has been. “This is a road in a rural area with heavy farm vehicles using it among others and my fear is that a vehicle carrying a load could very well coup over. “Louth County Council added this road to this year’s Road
Works Programme so the issue is being addressed although we have no definite date when works will be completed but it should be sooner rather than later.” In the meantime, Cllr McGeough has urged all road users in that area to be “mindful of the subsidence and to slow down and take extra care.”
