Residents in Muirhevnamor have vowed to fight tooth and nail to prevent a six-storey apartment block being built in their estate. A well-attended meeting took place on Monday evening in the Muirhevnamor Community Centre which was hosted by local Fianna Fáil councillor Emma Coffey who answered questions regarding the planning process and submitting objections.

Planning permission for the six-storey apartment block was lodged on the 20th June at the address Grange Close, Muirhevnamor asking for: ‘Permission for the demolition of the existing commercial unit and the construction of a six storey apartment block made up of 4 x one bedroom apartments, 11 x two bedroom apartments, 4 x three bedroom apartments (19 apartments in total), bin storage, bicycle storage, communications room, new boundary treatments including associated hard and soft landscaping, connection to the existing mains sewer, new onsite surface water attenuation system and associated site development works.’

Protest against high rise build plan From Page 1 Kyle Flood, a resident in Muirhevnamor for over 40 years, says he was shocked when he saw the notice for planning permission stating that this type of development is in no way suitable for a built-up area like Muirhevnamor and would have a massively negative effect on the area.

“I was shocked when I saw the location for the development and thought it must be a mistake when I saw Grange Close as the proposed site. The developers want to knock down the existing buildings which include the health centre and Ait na Daoine and build a high-rise tower block which will have knock on effects down the line with antisocial behaviour in the area.

“I am proud to live in Muirhevnamor and my family and many more families we spoke to in recent days do not want this development coming in to potentially cause damage to our area.

We have two local schools close to us and it is a very busy built-up area already.

The works which would have to take place to build this would close down the street and cause enormous delays and issues with traffic. We began a petition the other night and very quickly got almost 250 signatures

which shows the level of opposition locally to this project. We know that a petition has no legal standing but we intend sending it in to Louth County Council along with our official objections to the planning permission.

Councillor Emma Coffey was excellent at our meeting on Monday evening and she gave us some really good advice and knowledge on how to submit our objections through the proper channels.

“We know that this will be a long hard slog and won’t be easy but we are willing to fight this all the way and help ensure that our estate isn’t subjected to this tower block which will do absolutely nothing to add to the area. We have until the 23rd of July to send in our objections and we will start that process over the next few

days,” promised Kyle.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil councillor Emma Coffey said that she held the meeting as she was ‘inundated with calls from residents who expressed concerns over the size of the development’.

“I decided to hold the meeting because I was inundated with calls from residents in the area who have concerns over the size of the development,” said Cllr Coffey.

“I held the meeting to explain the planning process as a lot of people don’t realise there is a planning process.”

She added: “Given the number of enquiries and people not realising what they have to do, I thought it would be better to get everyone in a room so they can get the information that they need.

“County councillors don’t have any influence in regards

to planning. It’s an independent process. I do have concerns about the design but they are just my own observations.

“The design doesn’t really fit with what’s there already.

My other concern is that there is no common area.”

Cllr Coffey continued: “Obviously, some people who have contacted me are concerned about the height of it and they fear it might end up being linked to antisocial behaviour.

“I hope that this meeting will give them a guiding point. They asked me to help them and I thought it would benefit the wider community to discuss what’s needed.

“I’d be conscious that I don’t want people to be at a disadvantage. I wanted the meeting to give people in the area a collective voice.”

Pride 2022 launched in Louth County Museum

Pride 2022 kicked off in Dundalk on Monday, July 11 with the Pride launch held in Louth County Museum at 7pm.

Pride 2022 will also see the launch of the History of Pride at Louth County Museum.

The exhibition will be available to see all week.

According to Bernardine Quinn from Dundalk Outcomers, there was a “very good turnout” at the event.

“Some were from the community and some were not from the community. There was a lovely buzz there,” she said.

“Bill Foley put together a terrific photo exhibition of the work of the late Christopher Robson. It’s really informative and touches on issues such as the 90s AIDS crisis to marriage equality.”

Ógras Summer Camp This year for the first time, Ógras Summer Camp has been held in Dundalk, in Conradh na Gaeilge, Seatown Place. Ógras Summer Camps are held in 12 locations all over the country. The aim of these camps is to provide a safe space for young people to practice Irish during the Summer while having fun with other young people, and to give young people the opportunity to learn, practice Irish and build their confidence in speaking Irish.

The week-long camp was held in the first week of July and was oversubscribed very quickly as there was was huge interest from local families. Some activities included ciorcail comhrá (conversation circles), treasure hunts, sports, music and dancing, yoga, bug hunts, baking, art and crafts. There was a day trip to Newgrange Farm in Slane, Co Meath where the children got a chance to do a farmyard tour, meet the animals and feed the lambs, hens and goats.

Twenty four students aged 7-12 years old took part in the camp in Dundalk this year. There was great excitement in Conradh na Gaeilge as activities started every morning at 10am. Caoimhe, múinteoir an Champa and deputy principal of Gaelcholaiste Dhún Dealgan said “it was great to welcome all the young people to Conradh na Gaeilge, give them the chance to meet new friends and speak Irish. It is important that they see Irish being used outside the school setting

The camp was organised by Ógras – national youth organisation with clubs throughout Ireland, was facilitated by the local Dundalk Ógras club (Ógras Dhún Dealgan) and was led by a team of youth leaders (ceannairí) and young assistants (cuntóirí óga). The camp was supported by the Dundalk branch of Conradh na Gaeilge, and by Foras na Gaeilge.

In addition to the summer camp, Ógras Dhún Dealgan also provides a youth club. Its existing club for teenagers aged 13-15 has been running since 2020 and will begin again in September, along with a new club for younger children aged 8-12 years, which will be launched in September. Both clubs will take place in the Conradh na Gaeilge building – Áras Chonradh na Gaeilge – every fortnight. Ógras Dhún Dealgan is currently recruiting a panel of Youth Leaders to assist with the youth clubs from September. Youth leaders (ceannairí) must be over 18, while younger leaders (ceannairí óga) may be aged 16-18.

Louth Leaders in IT services and office solutions merge Dundalk, Co. Louth, Ireland; Monday 4th July: Managed IT and cyber security firm, Sync IT, has merged with office and business solutions provider, Cusken.

The merger supports 22 jobs in the North-East. The firm is forecasting the creation of 4 new roles over the next 18 months, bringing staff numbers to 26 by the end of 2023.

Smith wins Women’s Senior Knockbridge Vintage Run Close Championship Dundalk Golf Club’s Deirdre Smith went one better than last year when she won the Women’s Senior Close Championship at Thurles last Friday.

After finishing as leading qualifier in Wesport in 2021, Smith had to settle for being runnerup to Carol Wickham after the Laytown & Bettystown player defeated her 3&2 in the final.

She headed to Thurles for this year’s event as one of the favourites and justified that tag when she led the qualifying phase after the first round following a one under par 72 and led by four from Tracey Eakin of Dooks.

But, in tough conditions on day two, the pair finished level on 152, five clear of the field, after Eakin shot a second successive 76 to Smith’s 80 and the Dundalk player had to settle for second seeding in the matchplay based on countback.

After a two-year break due to Covid, the Knockbridge Vintage Club is holding their annual Road Run and Coffee Morning on Sunday 17 July.

The day will kick off at 11.00am with a Coffee Morning in Knockbridge Community Centre.

The Road Run will depart at 1.30pm.

Cars and tractors are all welcome to join the Road Run. Afterwards, the convoy will return to the Community Centre for a BBQ and entertainment.

All proceeds raised on the day will be donated to local charities.

36 holes to get to the semi-finals as she beat Clodagh Hopkins of Woodbrook and Maria O’Reilly of Headfort on the last green in first round and quarter-finals respectively but those two stern tests proved extremely beneficial.

“I hung in throughout the day and played well on the back nine in both matches. I was three down in the two of them.

I figured out what I was doing wrong in the afternoon and worked from there,” said Smith.

In the semi-final Smith beat Sheena McElroy of Grange 3&2 in the semi-

final and qualified to meet the 2014 champion Laura Webb in the final after the Royal Portrush player had defeated Eakin on the 19th hole in her semi. Smith was in superb form in the final as she took the lead on the third and only lost one hole after that before she closed the match out on the 15th green for a 4&3 win and a well-deserved national title.

“I played my best golf of the week in the final,” Smith said after her win.

“I was a bit slow in the first two days. I found something yesterday afternoon in my swing and

brought it into today.

“I grew in confidence when the shots came. I knew I had to play really well to beat Laura because she is a really good player. It’s not often you play your best golf in the final but I’m delighted I did.”

Smith, who is also a member of Co Louth Golf Club, got a big welcome back when she returned to Dundalk having added the senior version of the Irish Close Championship to the title she won in 2004 when she beat Tara Delaney on the 20th hole of the final at The Island.

For nearly a decade, Dundalk Family Fun Day has been hosted by the Redeemed Christian Church of God, A.K.A Miracleland, Castletown road. This year’s event on Saturday 2nd July attracted over 300 diverse participants from different communities. The Fun Day was initiated to promote unity, faith and love in Christ.

The aim was to, “bring communities together,” according to the senior pastor of the church, Alexander Alajiki. For the first time, a member of Dail Eireann - Ruari O Murchu TD and his Sinn Fein party colleague Kevin Meenan attended.

The recently elected Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Conor Keelan was also at the event.

Louth County Council to hold Local Property Tax Public Consultation July 2022 Louth County Council is welcoming written submissions from the public regarding the potential effects of varying the basic rate of Local Property Tax on businesses, individuals and local authority services. The Finance (Local Property Tax) Act 2012, makes specific provision

that elected members of a local authority may pass a formal resolution to vary the basic rate of the Local Property Tax for their administrative area by a percentage known as the local adjustment factor.

At the meeting set to be held in September, members may set a local ad-

justment factor within the range of +/- 15% of the basic rate, which would affect funding in proportion to the percentage change, or, may decide against changing the basic rate, in which case funding would remain unchanged. If a decision is reached to increase the rate, the maximum spending

available to Louth County Council would amount to over €1.46 million yearly.

As the majority of households in the region are set in the lowest band of LPT, a maximum increase of 15% would raise household tax by just €13.50 per annum. For households in the highest LPT bracket,

which make up just 2% of properties in the area, an LPT increase of fewer than €75 per annum would be incurred. The local adjustment factor in Co. Louth has not been altered since 2009, while the CPI has risen by 15.1% which presents obvious challenges in service provision.

Sentencing adjourned in Lisa Smith case A lawyer for Lisa Smith has asked the court to consider her young child and the ‘appalling conditions’ they experienced while in Syria.

The 40-year-old Dundalk mother of one was found guilty in May at the special criminal court of being a member of ISIS. She was found not guilty on the second charge of attempting to finance the terrorist organisation. She was due to be sentenced on Monday but sentencing was adjourned until 22nd July by Mr Justice

Geordan, from Blackrock, who is studying Business in the Institute has setup his own self-publishing company, whilst simultaneously writing and publishing two books himself.

The business idea started in lockdown, and Geordan was keen to try a commercial model like publishing to see how he would fair launching his own business.

“I originally started with my first title, Simple Smart Spanish, which is a beginner’s guide to Spanish. I had researched different mechanisms for publishing and decided on the Amazon selfpublishing model.”

TESCO Extra Dundalk helps Crosscause charity with clothing donation Crosscause have sent a big “Thank you” to the F&F team at Tesco Extra Dundalk who made two generous donations of clothing to the charity based in Blackrock.

Tesco’s generous donation in excess of 40 bags of new clothing will help hundreds of children currently living in our homes in Ghana and Romania.

Currently, Crosscause has a container based at the AOH in Blackrock, which it is filling with much needed supplies for theses homes and this general donation couldn’t have come at a better time. The container is booked to depart early August 2022.

“Our homes depend on the generous donations of local people and the good people of Ireland, and without their help, Crosscause would not be able to help improve the lives of many vulnerable children and families in Romania and Ghana,” stated Conor Hughes, director of Crosscause.

Creative Spark Downtown to host Grow Remote Jobs and Lunch event The Grow Remote Dundalk chapter is hosting an in-person jobs fair, introducing local workers to the numerous Remote Employers that are currently recruiting in Ireland.

Grow Remote is a non-profit community development organisation whose mission is to promote remote employment as a tool to bring about positive social change in hyperlocal communities across Ireland, including greater economic spend, a reduced carbon footprint, and increased social connection.

Grow Remote does this through a nationwide network of local chapters. Volunteers in villages, towns and cities across the island raise awareness of the benefits of remote employment, delivering training, assisting job seekers to find remote jobs, and running offline events.

On Saturday 16th July, the Grow Remote Dundalk chapter is inviting job seekers, or those

interested in finding out more about remote work job opportunities, to join them from 10am – 2pm at Creative Spark Downtown, Clanbrassil Street.

The Jobs fair will combine various supports offered by Grow Remote, says Grow Remote Employers Lead, Joanne Mangan: “We seek to make the local community aware of current jobs available here in Dundalk, running a number of bite-sized workshops and presentations covering everything from where to look for jobs, CV clinics to how to set yourself up as remote-ready. At Grow Remote, social connection is very important so there will be a bite to eat, a welcoming atmosphere, and some time to connect with our Dundalk chapter members and job seekers.”
