Evergreen McCabe is a Masters World Champion DUNDALK cyclist Johnny McCabe didn’t tell many people he was going to compete at a World Championship last week. The understated Cuchulainn Cycling Club cyclist has never been one to sing from the rooftops about his many achievements and so it must have come as something of a shock to his teammates and friends to see pictures emerge from the UCI Masters World Championships in Hamburg

Germany of Johnny standing on top of the podium with gold around his neck. Cuchulainn Cycling Club President Pat O’Shaughnessy described the 64 year old as an amazing man and an unsung hero in the world of cycling. “Johnny is a phenomenon. Whatever he takes on, he takes on full blooded whether it be running, cycling or whatever. He is also very understated and that could be seen last weekend when he went of to Hamburg nice and quietly without telling hardly anybody. It was fantastic to see Johnny recognised on the world stage and he thoroughly deserves the title of World Champion. He’s an inspiration to everybody in the club and we culdn’t be happier for him. Johnny McCabe described his win in the Masters World Cyclocross Championships Continued on Page 2 in Hamburg as ‘unbelievable as well as a wee bit emotional’. (Pic Credit: Sean Rowe).

From Page 2 “We had a surprise do for him in the Lumpers after the Leinster Championships on Saturday (which Johnny won, just six days after his World

Championship win) and it was a marvelous evening. I can remember looking around the room at one stage with pride seeing three Irish champions (Jimmy Flynn,

Martin Gray and Laura O’Driscoll), a European Champion (Maeve Baxter) and of course our new World Champion (Johnny McCabe). All coming from our wee club,” added a proud Pat. Johnny was competing in the 2023 UCI Cyclo-cross Masters World Championships in Hamburg, Germany and he claimed gold in the Men’s 65 – 69 category. Speaking to Cycling Ireland the Lordship resident (originally from the Dublin Road in Dundalk) pointed to the support he received from his fellow Irish riders as well as a practice session on the course beforehand as key elements of his victory. “I think it was vital to get out for a couple of laps because it was 6 at that stage and just to get on a course with those conditions that we wouldn’t really be used to back home. It’s very important to memorise the course and to know how to not wreck yourself in the race itself.

getting the stripes it makes it all the more worthwhile.” “There’s such emotion, there’s a few people looking down from above for sure. It’s very hard to describe the feeling, to have Alan, Des, and Tim there to celebrate with. It was just unbelievable.

“It’s all about pinning the number on your jersey, I’m a firm believer in that. You’re not looking at a podium, you’re just looking at having a great race being over the for the weekend and riding these iconic courses. “This was completely out of the blue but having said that I looked at

the course and thought this is right up my alley, but you dare not dream.” “You can’t plan for it everything aligns on the day. Everything must just fit and fortunately it did that day. When you stand there, and the National Anthem is being played it’s incredible.”

Johnny McCabe in action. “The race itself went a dream. I watched one of the women’s races before and they tended to brake maybe 50 metres before the hairpin turn on the starting straight of about 300 metres. “I said, they’re braking way too early, and the same thing happened in our race. I was second on the grid. They braked early and I just kept her lit right to the corner. They had gravelled the start straight so I knew there would be good braking into the hairpin corner which was the worst corners of the course. “I got round that corner first and said to my-

self ‘Oh Lordy, I have to hold this now!’ “It turned out okay because you have a clear run at it, you can concentrate 100% on everything in front of you. I don’t think I’ve ever concentrated as much during a race because of the conditions. “I didn’t fear the course, I was able to ride it which certainly got the gaps.” “It’s only at the finish line you realise how much you invested into it, not just the physical preparation but the psychological build up within you. Then when you happen to be lucky enough to succeed in

A DUNDALK man who is a childhood friend of the late Private Sean Rooney told the Dundalk Leader that a memorial cup organised in the soldier’s honour has raised over €10,000. Sean tragically lost his life while serving with the Defence Forces in Lebanon a year ago this week. According to Christopher O’Neill from Muirhevnamor, he came up with the idea for the Sean Rooney Memorial Cup earlier this year. “I took the idea to the lads. It was something we had previously seen being done in the Dun-

dalk local area,” said Christopher. “We said we would like to do our own version. We have been planning it all year. It made sense to have it in Dundalk so we booked Oriel Park. “We held a friends and family soccer match versus the army select team at 3pm. After the match we had a small presentation of medals and a trophy. Sean’s mother, Natasha, said a few words too.” Christopher added: “There was an event in the Lisdoo for Sean later that evening. We called is ‘A Night for Sean’. That was at 7pm. “The whole day and evening was a fundrais-

ing event for the charity Rainbows Ireland. We raised over €10,000. The money is still coming in but we will have a final total soon. “It was an emotional day. The whole week will be tough. There was a mass for Sean on Tuesday last and his anniversary in taking place on Thursday.” He concluded: “It’s still a bit surreal for a lot of us but having the memorial cup for Sean helped us over the last year. “It was something to focus on. We are now hoping to make the memorial cup an annual event and hope to have another one next year.”

HSE apologises to 93-year-old woman after ambulance wait

Dundalk Leader 13th December 2023

The HSE has apologised to a 93-year-old Dundalk woman who waited for almost four hours for an ambulance to come after she fell and broke her pelvis. In a response to a representation made by Louth TD Ruairí Ó Murchú, the National Ambulance Service (NAS) apologised to the woman for the long wait which happened on the evening of November 10 and which was raised at the Sinn Féin Ard Fhéis the following day and in Leinster House later that week. In the response, the NAS director of operations, William Merriman, said: ‘I can confirm that the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) audit department have reviewed in detail the call from both a call taking and dispatch perspective and the following were our findings. ‘Based on the information received, the call was appropriately taken and the appropriate coding of “serious but not life threatening” was assigned to the call. Following a review of resources that were on duty, it is clear that there were no suitable resources available to the dispatcher to assign to this call from the time of the call until the ambulance crew that treated the patient attended to the patient.

Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú. ‘In relation to the query regarding a number of ambulances outside the Louth County hospital I can confirm that all emergency ambulance vehicles that were crewed with staff on the evening were being used to respond to emergency calls. ‘The NAS apologies for the prolonged delay to getting a transporting resource to this call - which was due to high activity at that time. ‘On behalf of the NAS, can I take this opportunity to apologise

to (this lady) and her family on the wait for an ambulance’. Deputy Ó Murchú said while the apology was welcome, there were still more questions to be answered. He said: ‘While the response is welcome, the family was not seeking an apology. They contacted me because they wanted to know why this happened and how. ‘There are no details as to how many ambulances were available that night, how many crews were working, where they were and what kind of calls they were attending to. That’s what we wanted to know and I will be contacting the HSE once more to find out these details. ‘It is not enough to simply apologise and leave it at that. People need to know that when they call for an ambulance in Dundalk that there are sufficient resources to get to them within a reasonable time. ‘What happened to this lady cannot be allowed to happen again to anyone else. This response from the HSE is bereft of details, bereft of assurances that there are enough crew and ambulances available and bereft of any indications that this will not occur again’.

ON Tuesday 5th December, The Louth ABC Programme, as part of Louth Local Development hosted the official Launch of their new resource for parents in County Louth. The Louth ABC Programme have collaborated with parents and services in County Louth to develop a central source of information, outlining what services and supports are available to you in your area. In doing so they have developed - www.louthparenthub.ie Louth Parent Hub is a directory of services, that links families directly to a service whilst providing you with information about what support they provide. Parent support is listed and categorised on the website and subsequently linked to a live calendar of events that you can access online and in your own time. Each individual service, club

or organisation is able to register on the directory of services and Louth ABC hope to be able to provide families with as much support as possible. The website, funded through the Tusla Parental Participation and CYPSC Seed Fund was welcomed by Ciaran Reid, CEO of Louth Local Development and introduced to the audience by Louth ABC Programme Manager, Gavin McGee. OMEATH Action Volunteer Group would like to thank members of the public for their kind donations received in 2022. The village continues to receive great support from the local business people and the huge efforts from the volunteers. This year, Omeath Action Volunteer Group, is seeking donations to cover the outlays for 2023. Patricia Grant, a spokesperson for Omeath Action Volunteer Group, told the Dundalk Leader, that the Christmas Lights in Omeath all started nearly ten years ago. “A couple of local men went for a coffee in a café and decided they would try to decorate the village for Christmas,” she said. “The whole thing grew and grew. One volunteer fabricated a 42ft steel Christmas tree for the village. “And the whole place is decorated with lights. Another volunteer, who is very creative had

Christmas Lights in Omeath. some fantastic ideas, especially for the park.” Patricia added: “Unfortunately, the park is being demolished as part of a renovation plan for the village and it will be open territory. There will be no more poles. “We are hoping it will be finished in 2024 or early 2025 because next year is a big year for us. It’s the tenth anniversary of the Christmas lights. “Hopefully, the park

will be completed. We are going to start planning for Christmas 2024 in January 2024 so hopefully we will have the anniversary celebration and all the lights and tree for the first Saturday of December.” She concluded: “We get in a huge fresh tree from the forest. Then a priest arrives to bless it. There is a huge crowd. “We have mulled wine for the adults and hot chocolate for the

kids and Santa arrives on his sleigh, pulled by a steam engine. “There’s also a disco in the Strand Hotel for the kids at 3pm. Every year is different. The kids also get selection boxes and get their photos taken with Santa. And there’s mince pies and sweets. It’s very, very good and there is great community spirit. It’s just lovely to see all the lights.” The group still incurs the same outlays and expense each year including the following: the hire of a hoist and equipment; insurance; and replacing the nonworkable Christmas lights et cetera. Omeath Action Volunteer Group is asking members of the public to donate what they can to keep this festive season and spirt ongoing in village of Omeath. From as little €5, every little bit helps. Moran clan make the trip to Tipp to say goodbye to Shane Dundalk Leader 13th December 2023

AMONG the hundreds of mourners in Nenagh last week at Shane MacGowan’s funeral were three Dundalk siblings who grew up listening to and loving the music of The Pogues during their formative years in town. Niamh Moran, her

sister Simone and brother Jackie felt they had to travel to Nenagh to pay their respects to the acclaimed singer songwriter who passed away at the age of 65 on November 30th. According to Niamh they wanted to pay their respects to a leg-

end of Irish music who had brought so much joy to them down through the years. “The Pogues were massive in our house. My older brother Jackie adored them and would always have them on in the house when we were growing up and that’s

BYRNE'S LATE NIGHT PHARMACY

how I got into them. My parents enjoyed listening to them too and we were lucky enough to have a brilliant Pogues cover band in town (called The Rogues) when we were younger and we had so many great nights soundtracked by the music of The Pogues. When I heard that Shane had died I asked my brother Jackie would he be making his way down to Tipperary for the funeral and we pretty quickly made a plan to head down. My sister Simone decided to come along too and we left Dundalk at 10am last Fri-

day for Nenagh. Walking around Nenagh was amazing with The Pogues music blaring from speakers all over the town. We visited Shane’s local, Philly Ryans, and I got talking to a man who must have been in his 80’s who had travelled from Galway to pay his respects to his hero. There were people from all over Ireland and America in the bar which showed the affection people had for Shane,” explained Niamh. “We were shocked at the openness of the funeral to be honest. There were no barriers and anybody

could have went into the church. It was a bit surreal seeing the President of Ireland and all these celebrities walking past you without security or anything. We were standing at the back of the church and we found the service very moving and joyous at the same time. It was a perfect send off for one of our greatest songwriters. I was surprised with how emotional I got during it but we were all delighted to have made it down to say goodbye to him,” concludNiamh and Jackie Moran. ed Niamh.

Fitzpatrick gives Garda Late Night League a huge success backing to the Minister for Justice Dundalk Leader 13th December 2023

14

DEPUTY Peter Fitzpatrick gave his backing to Minister for Justice Helen McEntee last week during a motion of no confidence vote in the Meath TD which was tabled by Sinn Féin in the wake of the rioting in Dublin City Centre which followed a knife attack on young schoolchildren in Dublin City Centre. The Justice Minister survived the vote (83-63) with Fitzpatrick stating that the Minister for Justice was ‘doing her best’. “I condemn the barbaric attack on three children and their carer, crèche manager Leanne Flynn, outside Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire on Thursday, 23 November, and send my prayers to the two people still in hospital. “There seems to be an idea that the Minister for Justice should have a hands-on role in day-today policing. The Minister’s job is to be very clear on policy, put laws in place and ensure police have the numbers and resources necessary. In September, I and my colleagues in the Regional Group published a motion expressing severe concerns about the ongoing challenges faced by An Garda

Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick. Síochána. It would therefore be remiss of me to bypass the fact that there is a chronic shortage of resources, which directly impacts the force’s ability to carry out its role. However, who the Minister for Justice is does not really deal with the issues we face. “Claims that the riots and public disorder in the aftermath of this attack could have been foreseen, prevented or contained through earlier action are careless and plain wrong. The fact is that the hooligan culture and the criminality issues we face run much deeper than law and order. Initial protests in the city centre on

Thursday were organised by antiimmigration figures who were later joined by opportunistic rioters. We all heard the WhatsApp message. “They can’t control us all. Let’s have little groups splintering off, doing what we got to do,” it said. Phrases such as “tool up” and “kill any foreigner” were also used. “Yes, more resources are needed - we can all agree on that. The Minister, Deputy McEntee, is absolutely aware of that. She is focusing on her work in the Department of Justice and supporting An Garda Síochána as it keeps us safe and maintains law and order. She is doing her best. We need to stop playing political football. We need to put our heads together and action interventions that target the issues of poverty, criminality and the “them versus us” narrative growing throughout our country’s culture, rather than seeing the current situation as an opportunity to take out an individual Minister. “I will support the Minister this evening on the motion of confidence,” stated Deputy Fitzpatrick.

The success of the Garda Late Night League has been praised by senior officers who attended the latest games at DkIT Sport last week. Almost 30 teenagers from Dundalk took part in soccer games with members of Dundalk Gardaí in what was the latest in a series of matches that allow young people to interact with Gardaí away from law enforcement. Garda Paul Burke, Juvenile Liaison Officer, (JLO) has been the driving force of the Late Night League which is now in its 13th year and is proving more popular than ever. Gda. Burke said: ‘It has been very successful this year, with three happening in 2023. We ran the last one in October and then there was the Youth Reach Blitz and many of those who came then wanted to come back again so we have organised this and two more nights before the end of the year. ‘The numbers were

Garda Paul Burke, JLO, with Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú and a participant at the Late Night League at DkIT Sport. growing each night and I am delighted to see it. It mainly caters for young people aged between 13 and 18 in the Cox’s Demesne and Muirhevnamor areas. ‘They come along with people they know, but we mix the teams up so they get to interact with those they don’t know. They concentrate on what they have in common – soccer – and not what separates them’. The Late Night League was attended by Superintendent Charlie Armstrong, Inspector Ger Collins, Sgt. Declan

Brady, Garda Paul Connolly and Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú. The head of the Garda National Youth Diversion Bureau, Rose Sweeney, made the trip to DkIT Sport to see Thursday’s soccer games. She has been here before and says the Late Night League is ‘very important for community engagement’. Ms Sweeney said: ‘It is also important for building relationships with young people in the community and it shows a different side of Gardaí. Young peo-

ple get involved with it through the Youth Diversion Programmes and the league adds value to the programme. ‘It’s a useful way of engaging and these are young people playing soccer together, integrating with each other, getting to know people from different cultures and backgrounds. ‘The league in Dundalk would not happen without Gda. Burke’. Sgt. Niall O’Reilly from the Garda National Youth Diversion Bureau came to DkIT Sport for the first time last week.

Garda Ring Buoy and Rope Bag Water Safety Initiative

Dundalk Leader 13th December 2023

Gardai in the Dundalk District have received six ring buoy and rope bags which will be placed in patrol cars in the Dundalk District. The idea was put forward by Sergeant Damien Welby, a Donegal man, who is stationed in Blackrock. Damien had seen a similar plan piloted in his native Donegal in 2021 and he decided to try and introduce a similar scheme around Dundalk. Last Sunday morning Damien, was in Greenore with Finbarr Dillon who is a member of the Sub Aqua Club to launch the initiative. Finbarr is also the managing director of Oriel Auto Recovery who donated the ring buoys and rope bags which will shortly be placed in six patrol cars around Dundalk. According to Damien the initia-

Finbarr Dillon (Oriel Auto Recovery), Trainee Garda Caitlin Carolan, Inspector John Boyle (Dundalk) and Sergeant Damien Welby (Blackrock). tive has the potential to save lives in the future around our coastlines. “Water safety is a very important issue and unfortunately we as gardaí have to deal with water based incidents on an ongoing basis. I am also a member of Dundalk Sub Aqua Club and I saw an opportunity to equip our patrol cars with ring buoys and rope bags to help potentially save a life

during an emergency,” explained Damien. “The ring buoys and rope bags were donated by Oriel Auto Recovery on behalf of Finbarr Dillon who is a fellow member of the Dundalk Sub Aqua Club. We are very grateful for his kind donation and we hope to roll out the equipment to six local patrol cars shortly. “The equipment includes special throw-

bags and ring-buoys which can be used in the event of a water emergency along beaches, harbours and piers. These are very simple pieces of equipment to have in the car but they can prove very effective in a water based emergency and to me it just seems like a no brainer to have them in patrol cars and increase the chances of a person being saved,” he added.

Gaelscoil Dhún NEWS in Brief Dealgan are champions Christmas

Carol Services

The victorious Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan side are champions of Louth. THE mist and drizzle developed into incessant rain as the girls from 5th and 6th class in Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan made the short journey to Oriel Park for the FAI Schools Leinster Branch 9-a – side semi-final against Aston Village from Drogheda. Enduring the wind and rain, both teams battled hard but as the final whistle sounded a penalty shootout loomed. Our magnificent goalkeeper and five brave girls lined up to see Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan through to the final, 5-3 the final score. After lunch as the wind rose and the rain teemed down, the sodden girls took to the field once again, elated

to have made the final. Win, lose or draw, these ecstatic girls were making history and were determined to enjoy the occasion. Scoil Bhríde Dunleer were formidable opponents and they took the lead, scoring early on. A huge challenge lay ahead for the local girls as the clock ticked down. Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan pushed forward, pressed hard and with fortune on their side were awarded a penalty in the closing minutes. Aoibheann Ní Chonchúir stepped up and converted the penalty. As the referee signalled the end of the match, the girls braced themselves for another penalty shootout!! With the score 4-4

after 5 shots, sudden death materialized. On an even keel after the next shot, Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan’s courageous keeper Valerie Osemwegie stood on the line and heaved a sigh of relief as the ball headed for the stands. Without hesitation Bláthnaid Ní Chonluain walked over, placed the ball on the spot and converted the winning goal of the day! Teamwork and determination sprinkled with a little luck saw the girls from Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan raise the trophy and return to school proud winners of the Louth medium schools competition 2023. Comhghairdeas leis na cailíní ó Ghaelscoil Dhún Dealgan.
