Mick Pender is not a man who gives up easily. The Ashbourne native is on a mission to raise enough money to buy a minibus for An Slí, the St John of God run house for adults with disabilities in Toberona. Mick’s brother JP is a resident in An Slí and like many of his fellow residents he is wheelchair bound. Unfortunately, the bus used by An Slí is not fitted out to take wheelchairs which has made it very difficult to take residents out on day trips or even hospital appointments. Mick has nothing but praise for the excellent staff in An Slí and as a thank you for their great work he has been trying to raise funds to buy a new minibus which has the capabilities to transport wheelchair users from An Slí. “My brother has been with the St John of God Services since he was eight which is over 50 years ago and has been a resident in An Slí for four years now. He and the other seven residents up there are brilliantly looked after but unfortunately they don’t get out as much as they would like as the minibus used by An Slí is unfortunately not fit for purpose. Mick’s minibus appeal for An Slí From Page 1 “I have been fundraising for a few years now trying to raise enough money to buy a new minibus which would have the capabilities to transport any of the wheelchair users and get them out and about. “It’s been very tough trying to raise the money and I have had nothing but bad luck over the last couple of years what with Covid forcing me to postpone a number of planned fundraisers. The total cost of the minibus is in the region of €35,000 and to date I have raised just over €22,000. I am pleading with the good people of

Dundalk to help me with one final push to try and raise the funds to give the eight residents in An Slí a better life. I am also appealing to any local businesses to get on board and perhaps sponsor us and help us get over the line. “It’s been especially tough for JP and other residents over the last couple of years with all the Covid restrictions which meant they have spent an awful lot of time in the house. JP doesn’t really understand what Covid is all about and he doesn’t understand why he has been unable to get out as much as he used to. This minibus would be

a godsend to An Slí and it would give me great joy to see the residents have the ability to get out and about around the community more. I’m at the stage now where I have exhausted all avenues of fundraising and I’m not sure what to do next to raise the last ten grand. We are hoping to have a bucket collection outside Oriel Park down the road but right now I am asking for help from any local people or businesses to get us over the line,” pleaded Mick. If you are in a position to help out Mick you can call or send a message to him at 0858006356. An Slí residents home in Toberona.

Louth TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has welcomed the announcement that a steering group has been established at the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications to look at district heating systems, including Carlinn Hall in Dundalk. The Sinn Féin deputy has raised the issue of spiralling heating costs for residents of Carlinn Hall a number of times in Leinster House this year. Residents of the 200home estate south of Dundalk town centre were hit with massive hikes to their heating bills earlier this year when the price of wholesale gas, which

supplies the district, or communal, heating system in the development, skyrocketed. Since the price hike, Deputy Ó Murchú has engaged with residents, gas suppliers, utility suppliers and the Department of Environment to try to find a resolution to the problem, which affects a number of other homes across the State, mainly apartment buildings. In response to a parliamentary question asked by Deputy Ó Murchú about plans to deal with the issues with communal heating systems, Environment Minister Eamon Ryan said a District Heating Steering Group has been

established. Minister Ryan said: ‘In line with the commitment in the Climate Action Plan 2021, a District Heating Steering Group has been established to resolve barriers to expansion of district heating. ‘This Steering Group will ensure that there

is a robust governance framework put in place for district heating, and it will also bring forward recommendations for an optimum regulatory framework, along with any legislation that may be required. ‘Considerations in this regard will also encompass legacy district heating and local heating schemes that are already in operation in Ireland. ‘The Steering Group has met on four occasions since its establishment in February 2022 and is expected to bring its report to Government in Q4 2022’. In the Dáil chamber, Minister Ryan added: ‘Deputy Ó Murchú

DUNDALK is ranked 27th out of 40 towns/cities surveyed by the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL). The latest IBAL survey states that Dundalk is “moderately littered” and that there has been some improvement in the town but not enough to give it clean status. Market Square was noted as being “very much deserving” of the top-litter grade. The streetscape was described as “excellent”. The Castleblayney and Carrickmacross approach roads were both “top-ranking” and the waste-ground at the Clothes Bank on the N53 was a “much-improved” site. The survey stated that there was evidence of signifi-

brought a similar issue in Louth to my attention. I am aware of the development in the Deputy’s constituency. There are only a small number of such systems, but they have been badly hit by the impact of very high wholesale gas market prices. ‘Our Department, through the steering group, will examine measures to explore what ways we can assist such developments to get out of what is now a high-priced system. It will not be an easy switch, but I am very much willing to investigate what policy levers we can seek to use in this regard’. Deputy Ó Murchú

said: ‘I welcome the establishment of this steering group and I welcome the engagement we have had with the department on the issue of Carlinn Hall in particular. ‘But with wholesale gas prices continuing at a high price, and with no sign of them coming down, the residents of Carlinn Hall are in dire need of a speedy resolution to their heating bills, which were astronomical earlier this year. ‘There is a short reprieve for them because of the summertime, but winter is coming and they need answers before they are hammered again with huge and unaffordable bills’.

cant works taking place to clear the site. In addition, it added that there was a notable litter presence at the Cost Cutter car park and the waste ground on the corner of Maxwell’s Row and St Nicholas Avenue – both had “long-lie”

items, indicating a lack of thorough cleaning for quite some time. The Recycle Facility (Tesco) had a myriad of “stuffed” items to the rear. Wrightson’s Lane was a “much-improved” site, according to the survey.

Passport delays unacceptable states Fitzpatrick

Dundalk Leader 15th June 2022

Louth TD Peter Fitzpatrick has called the delays that people are experiencing when applying for a passport as unacceptable and hugely frustrating. Speaking in the Dáil the independent TD said he had experienced the problems at first hand when calling the passport office last week. “What is happening with passport applications is unacceptable. There is bad communication, people are not answering the phone and applicants are sometimes waiting for hours with no reply. I rang the office myself last week. Someone on the phone says you are number five on the list, then number four and then all of a sudden you are number 40. It is crazy what is happening. People think this is just about people going on holidays but it is not. There are many people who have medical emergencies, deaths abroad or family members who are sick and they just want to visit them. “In fairness to them, they apply for the passport in plenty of time. They are told the pass-

Peter Fitzpatrick, TD. port will be ready on 4 May and they are going on 6 May. Then 4 May comes and there is still no sign of it. They are panicked and frustrated. Many people will not have sympathy for Deputies and Senators but we are the ones getting the brunt of this. For the past number of years every phone call I received was about housing, but at the moment, nearly every phone call to my constituency office is about passports. People are shouting and roaring. They are frustrated and are giving out. The problem is they apply in plenty of time but there is no communication from the Passport Office. Nobody is an-

swering the phone and it is frustrating people. That is totally wrong. “Another serious problem is that when a child applies for a passport, especially a first-time passport, one of the parent’s passports has to accompany the application. When there is no sign of the passport, one of the parents will ring up and be told there is a problem with the passport and the office needs A, B and C. The parents then have two options. They can cancel the passport for the child, get their passport back and reapply, or they can go ahead with the existing application. It can be very frustrating and it is not fair,” stated Fitzpatrick. “The Minister of State said earlier that 340 extra staff had been employed since last year. Thanks be to God for that because I would hate to be coming in here today if there were not an extra 340 staff there. Nobody is blaming the staff. It is the people at the top causing the problem. It is just bad organisation. I accept that about 500,000 passports have been issued so far so

far this year, and I believe the Passport Office is doing an additional 5,000 passports a day. I know the staff are doing their best. The Minister, Deputy Coveney, spoke about online applications. He said it would take ten working days for a single adult, 15 days for a complex child renewal and 30 working days for a first-time application. “He went on to state that applications submitted by post will take eight weeks. That was a lovely letter that I received from the Minister and I thought it was great, but it is not reflected in the many phone calls I have been getting to my constituency office. “We knew two years ago that this would happen, given we always knew the pandemic would one day subside, but we did not plan for it and that is the problem. I appeal to the Minister of State and everyone in the Department to resolve this, whether that requires hiring more people or just sorting out the people at the top. Please get it right,” pleaded Peter.

Danny Liam and Ryan McFadden.

A family from Greenacres have appealed for help in finding a recording of a school nativity play from the Friary Infants school which took place in 2008. Seven-year-old Danny McFadden played Joseph in the school nativity play just before Christmas in 2008. Watching on where his proud parents Mary and Dessie McFadden as well as his older brothers Liam and Ryan. Tragically, Danny passed away in January 2010, aged just eight, having fallen ill a couple of months earlier after developing a brain tumour. Danny’s mother Mary was recently reminded of her son playing Joseph in the Friary

Parents appeal for video tape of tragic Danny’s school play school nativity play and the idea came to her that perhaps there is a recording of the play out there somewhere which she would dearly love to see. “I have plenty of photos of Danny but no video footage at all and it struck me about a year ago that maybe there was a recording of Danny on stage from the nativity play in the Friary. I can still remember how proud Danny was when he was asked to play Joseph and he loved being up on stage that evening. I have a vague recollection of somebody recording the play but despite putting the word out on facebook last year I

haven’t been able to locate any recordings unfortunately. “Danny’s death still lives with us all and there’s not a day that goes by that we don’t think of him. He was such a beautiful outgoing friendly child and we were distraught when he left us. To be able to see him again on video would bring us all such joy and I’m just hoping that somebody somewhere might have a recording of that video in their homes. I’m nearly sure it was just before Christmas in 2008 that the play took place. “All my boys went to the Friary school and I couldn’t say enough good things about the place. It was a fantastic

school and Danny’s teacher Mr Stanley was especially nice. He was such a lovely kind man and a brilliant Principal. I know it’s a long shot but I would be eternally grateful if anybody could help me with this and source this recording if it is out there somewhere,” stated Mary. The Dundalk Leader contacted the Friary Infant’s school asking if the school would have taken a recording of the play but we were told that they would not have. If any parents can recall taking a video of the Friary Nativity play from 2008 they can contact editorial@ dundalkleader.com or call the office on 0429320888.

A new support service to assist people dealing with harmful gambling is now available at Connect Family Resource Centre, Louth. The ‘National Problem Gambling Support Service’ was officially launched this week by Gambling Awareness Trust. The service is a collaboration between Gambling Awareness Trust and the Family Resource Centre National Forum (FRCNF), which will see 20 Family Resource Centres (FRCs) across the country provide professional and confidential counselling services to those experiencing harmful gambling and their families. Speaking about the service, Pam Bergin, Executive Director of Gambling Awareness Trust, said: “I would strongly encourage anyone in Louth who is experiencing harmful gambling to contact their local FRC. Harmful gambling can have serious consequences for people’s mental health, their employment and relationships. International research reports that for every single person identified with a ‘gambling disorder’, up to six other people are impacted sig-

nificantly. Given the estimated prevalence of 55,000 problem gamblers in Ireland this presents a significant number of individuals affected in Irish society and highlights the need for increased services and supports in this area. “The National Problem Gambling Support Service will provide vital community-based support to help those experiencing harmful gambling and their affected others. Through the FRCs, Gambling Awareness Trust wants to end the stigma attached to problem gambling by sending a strong message to those affected that professional and confidential support is available.” Fergal Landy, CEO Family Resource Centre National Forum, added: “The Family Resource Centre National Forum is delighted to collaborate with Gambling Awareness Trust to contribute to the development of a National Problem Gambling Support Service for those experiencing harmful gambling and their families. “Given the unique position of Family Resource Centres within communities through Ireland, it is

Delight for Eamonn as festival returns Dundalk Grammar after three-year enforced hiatus School Talent Show THE co-founder of the Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) Eamonn Quinn has said he is “delighted” the festival is back after a three-year gap. The title of the festival is “Nothing has changed. Everything has changed” and it’s due to take place from June 17-18. “All of the concerts are being held outside traditional arts venues in places such as St Nicholas Church, the Gaol in the Oriel Centre and The Spirit Store,” said Eamonn. Originally from just outside Newry, Eamonn lives on the Lower Point Road, Dundalk with his wife, Gemma. They founded LCMS in 2006. “We wanted to bring specialised contemporary music to the town. I’d never done anything like it before,” he said. “The pianist Joanna McGregor was the first musician brought to Dundalk by LCMS.

Eamonn Quinn. (Photo Credit Andy Spearman). She plays vary varied stuff. That was the aim, to mix the whole thing up.” The ‘Nothing has Changed. Everything has Changed’ festival opens on Friday, June 17 at St Nicholas Church of Ireland in Dundalk. There’s a repeat performance there of Linda Caitlin Smith’s ‘Meadow’ for three string players. Also catching up with music from lock-

down, there’ll be a chance to hear Sam Perkin’s ‘Flow’ live. This is similarly for string trio, and similarly a piece whose LCMS recording has been making waves. On the same programme are new works by Irish composer Andrew Synnot and by one of the foremost composers in England and internationally, Gavin Bryars. Among the ace performers are the out-

standing Irish string quartet, the Esposito, ace flautist Silvija Scerbaviciute and the breath-taking soprano Juliet Fraser. The next day’s events start at lunchtime in St Nicholas Church of Ireland. Australian singer Mitch Riley and French pianist Vanessa Wagner pull in at 1pm for their acclaimed performance of “O Mensch!” There’s bass in the early afternoon at 3pm

at The Spirit Store, where the stunning Icelandic improviser Bára Gísladóttir takes the stage with Skúli Sverrisson. In the chapel of St Vincent’s Secondary School, Dundalk, there will be an absorbing delve into slow sound and interference patterns by Catherine Lamb, scored for string bass and quarter tone bass flute. The festival closes that evening at the same venue with voices: the Vox Clamantis choir of Estonia, singing Arvo Pärt’s LCMS commission “The Deer’s Cry”, music by the younger Estonian composer Helena Tulve, Lou Harrison’s ecstatic “Mass for St Cecilia’s Day” and a new work, “Storm in Devon”, by Siobhán Cleary. Winners from the 2022 Dundalk Grammar School Talent Show.

By Max McCaldin

An upbeat, but tense atmosphere swept through Dundalk Grammar School last week as the Student Council organised the 2022 Talent Show, with the theme ‘Raise The Roof’. Given the circumstances over the last few years, the event took on an even greater importance as we brought young talent back to the stage. Nonetheless, a celebratory mood was almost tangible among those in the audience and backstage. Students from across Dundalk Grammar were encouraged to take part, performing whatever their talent was. Interviewed on the theme, one of

the Officers said “With the slogan Raise The Roof, we invite people to come together, our different identities and cultures, to celebrate each other’s talents and music.” “One of our judges for the night was, none other than Dundalk FM’s producer Marissa Lucchesi. She brought her extensive expertise from the radio, music, and broadcasting industry to those contestants taking part and to the audience. “ Congratulations goes to all who took part, as well as the Winner Alex Gormley and Runner up Ronan O’Reilly. The night was for everyone to participate in their own way, and that’s what made it so enjoyable.

The Dance Kids proudly present their 20th Anniversary show ‘Let’s Celebrate’ An Táin Arts Centre is the place to be on Sunday the 19th of June when the Dance Kids unveil their 20th Anniversary show ‘Let’s Celebrate’. Never one’s to sit still; the Dance Kids have been rehearsing for ‘Let’s Celebrate’ since February and have promised that this year’s show will be a perfect night out for all the family, with performances to suit all ages. The talented dancers aged from just four years of age are promising to stage a ‘show-stopping performance’ of the hit Disney film, ‘101 Dalmatians’, as well as many favourites from ‘Ed Sheeran and ‘Queen’. The night of entertainment will also include hit songs from ‘Calamity Jane’ and ‘JoJo Siwa’ to name just a few. If that wasn’t enough An Táin Arts Centre will then be transformed

into the sunny island of Greece where the cast of Mamma Mia will have the audience singing and dancing in their seats. “We are so excited about this year’s show ‘Let’s Celebrate’,” said Freda Hearty. “Everyone has worked so hard; these kids are so talented, and I know they will be amazing on stage. After the tremendous success of our sold-out Christmas show ‘Time To Sparkle’, ‘Let’s Celebrate’ is going to be the show of the year as we celebrate 20 years of fun. Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment.” ‘Let’s Celebrate’ takes place in An Táin Arts Centre, Dundalk, on Sunday the 19th of June at 2pm and 7pm and is not to be missed. Book your tickets today at An Táin Arts Centre box of- Emma Gogarty Jessica O’Rafferty and Caoimhe fice on 042 9332332 or antain.ie. Byrne.
