Lord of the Rings!

Good samaritan Alan returns two lost wedding rings in one day

A mArried father-of-two from dundalk was “delighted” after he was reunited with the wedding ring he lost on Templetown beach.

dundalk Leader’s, Pat Coburn from Oaklawns went to Templetown for a swim with his wife of 38 years, Kate, and their seven-year-old grand-daughter, Hazel on Wednesday, August 9.

“We went for a swim around lunchtime and it was as we were driving away that i noticed my wedding ring was missing,” said Pat.

“There was a moment of confusion and we went back and had a look around. We spoke to a few people and to the lifeguards.

“Then Kate suggested we put out an appeal on Facebook. i was resigned to the idea that the ring was gone but i said we’d give it a go.”

Pat added: “People started getting in touch. my niece, emma Coburn, lives near Templetown and she was contacting friends of hers with metal detectors.

“Then a man called Alan with a metal detector started chatting to our friends, ivor and mary martin on the beach about the missing ring.

“They told him roughly where we were swimming and within a couple of hours he had found my 9 carat gold wedding ring.” Continued on Page 2

Pat continued: “He drove to town and dropped it off at our house. I was delighted. It was a very happy ending.

“I’d like to thank everyone who gave their time to help us especially to Alan, and to Ivor and Mary, my niece, Emma, and anyone who got in contact with us.

“If there’s anyone out there who has lost jewellery please don’t give up hope of finding it again.”

According to Alan he was alerted to the fact that Pat’s wedding ring had been lost via a post on facebook.

“I was on Facebook where I saw a post regarding a lost wedding band so decided to pack the gear and go for a look. On arrival at the

beach a lady approached me and pointed out the general area where Pat’s ring was missing in the swim area, I took her number in case I’d find it . “during the course of the search, I dug a platinum wedding band engraved Paul & Aishling along with their wedding date. As luck would have it, a guy walking the beach

approached and asked if I had come across his wedding band. He was swimming earlier when a huge wave crashed into him sending his ring into the water. I told Paul that I had three rings in my pocket and if he could describe his I’d be delighted to return it to him. He described the engraving along with the date so I reached into my pocket and handed

him his ring back.

“Paul was absolutely floored and I’ll never forget the look on his face. It was absolutely priceless. Paul had spent the morning eye balling the beach himself to no avail. From three rings, I was now down to two but I had a phone number for Pat’s ring.

“I’ve been detecting for over a decade so I knew by the condition

of the ring and its depth in the sand that it was a fresh loss. When I got home I rang Pat’s phone. there was no answer so I rang his wife Kathleen to tell her I might have some good news for them. I then drove to Pat’s house and handed him his precious wedding band. Both he and his wife were over the moon. I still have a third silver ladies ring which

I’m hoping to reunite with its original owner, but as time goes by with these finds, one begins to lose hope.

Some rings I’ve found in the past have been in the ocean for decades and sadly a return is not always possible unfortunately. thankfully this weekend brought happy faces and a good result,” concluded Alan.

Morale low amongst retained firefighters

great to see.

“We have been asked by some if we are putting the public at risk but the service is already at risk if this recruitment and retention crisis continues. We have been lucky

to be able to carry on as long as we have.”

He added: “I would urge the public if there is an emergency to please call 999 and you will get a response from the next available station.”

A rEtAInEd dundalk firefighter has said that “morale is low” amongst local retained firefighters who are campaigning to stem a recruitment and retention crisis.

Local man Keith Agnew has been a retained firefighter for four years and has recently taken over as the Acting Sub Officer of the retained crew.

“Morale is low amongst members of the crew at the moment because the campaign is starting to hit them in the pocket,” said Keith.

“the extra shifts have stopped. On a normal

day-to-day basis there would be extra jobs to do but that’s not the case at the minute.

“The retained firefighters in Dundalk consist of a crew of five. People are generally aged from their mid-20s to under 35.”

He added: “nearly everyone has kids. the lads are finding it tough but at this point it is down to the government.

“It’s not at local level. We have a good working relationship with management. At the minute we are doing what is called 50-50 closures.

“For example, today (tuesday, August 15) Ardee Fire Station is

closed and the drogheda retained service is closed. It rotates so we are not responding to calls in those areas today.”

Keith continued: “So far, the government has given little to no positive indications. the lads don’t want to be striking.

“they are keen to get back to work. If we are closed, the next available appliance is 20 minutes away and this will have an impact on the community. the lads want to get back to normality as quickly as possible.”

Ardee-based retained firefighter, Lorcan Conlon, is also the shop steward for Louth

SIPtU. According to Lorcan, the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) has had “very little appetite for engagement” with retained firefighters.

“they have left us with no option to continue with this action. It is hard on the lads because we are all in this service to help people. But it’s got so bad, we feel we have been left with no choice but to mount this campaign,” said Lorcan.

“We have 50-50 closures at the minute and we are looking to close more stations from next Saturday if there are no positive developments. We have good support from the people which is

rottweiler gets new lease of life

LOUtH County Council dog Pound came to the rescue of an 11 year old rottweiler found tied to a gate in mid-Louth last month.

Staff at the pound were alerted to three dogs left outside a property in dunleer on July 21st. Louth County dog wardens arrived at the scene and were able to safely remove all three, a rottweiler and two small terriers, to the dog pound.

the rottweiler was found to be microchipped and registered as ‘Mokka’. the owner was contacted, but informed staff that they did not want the dog back.

Mokka was assessed and found to generally be in good body condition, but she unfortunately had a golf ball sized growth on her paw, which had begun to rupture. the location of the tumour also meant that it could have caused damage to her paw. For this reason, and to reduce the risk of accidental injury and infection, she was kept in a separate kennel beside her two little companions.

Once it became clear

that she would not be reclaimed by her owner, a decision was taken to remove the mass.

the pound keeper also contacted dundalk dog rescue (ddr), who work closely with Louth County Council dog pound to rehome dogs. ddr sought a foster placement for Mokka and kindly offered to take her into their care as soon as one was found – an important outlet for her long term care.

Louth County Veterinarian Garrett Shine carried out surgery to remove the tumour, and

Mokka has made a full recovery. She was also given her initial vaccines at the pound, and her overgrown nails were trimmed to make walking more comfortable for her.

Post surgery she enjoyed a warm soft bed at the pound, and plenty of treats. With stitches removed, she has been healing well, and has bounced back to her best.

“She is an extremely sweet natured lady who loves a gentle stroll and to lie in the grass at the pound when the sun shines, and loves being

brushed and generally fussed over,” explained Pound Keeper Catherine Keating.

Mokka is still being cared for at the pound, but it is expected she will go in to long term foster care with dundalk dog rescue, and hopefully soon be in her new foster home getting all the love and attention she deserves.

Her two companions, two terriers brought to Louth County Pound on the same day, are already living their best lives, rehomed after just six days!

Families encouraged to register for free GP care for children aged 6 and 7

LocAL Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has urged families to register for free GP visit cards for children aged 6 and 7.

From today (Friday 11 August, 2023) the under 6s GP Visit Card scheme has been expanded to provide free GP care to all children under the age of 8 in Ireland.

More than 78,000 children are set to benefit from the change.

The move represents the first stage in the biggest expansion in eligibility for free GP care covering up to half a million people.

The expansion of the scheme is supported by the landmark agreement between the Department of

Health, the HSE, and the Irish Medical Organisation signed last month which put in place a series of financial supports for GPs.

Senator McGreehan said: “I’m delighted that my party colleague Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has expanded free GP care to under 8s. Families can now register their chil-

dren aged 6 and 7 for their free GP visit card.

“Fianna Fáil in Government is committed to making healthcare more affordable for families. This is one of a number of measures that our party while in Government has introduced to make sure that that cost is not a barrier to children accessing healthcare. This

move will undoubtedly be of huge benefit to children and their families.”

The expansion of free GP care to children aged 6 and 7 is the first stage of the expansion in eligibility for GP care without charges under the GP Agreement 2023. It will be followed by the expansion of free GP care to people earning up

to the median income in September and November this year.

In total, about 500,000 additional individuals are estimated to become eligible under this expansion, some 78,000 children aged 6 and 7 and 430,000 individuals earning up to the median income.

Ambulance turnaround times in OLOL getting worse—Ó Murchú

SInn Féin td for Louth, ruairí Ó Murchú has said that the ambulance turnaround times for Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in drogheda are getting worse.

He was responding to data received by party health spokesperson, david Cullinane, td from the national Ambulance Service in response to a parliamentary question.

the data showed that in April, 25% of ambulances were cleared from the Lourdes in less than 30 minutes, while 61% spent between 30

and 60 minutes at the hospital and 14% were there for more than 60 minutes.

In May, the less than

30 minutes figure had dropped to 18%, while 55% were turned around at the hospital between 30 and 60 minutes, but 26% were there for more than an hour.

The latest figures, for June, show that 23% of ambulances were turned around at the Lourdes in under 30 minutes, while 60% were there for up to an hour and in 17% of cases, it took more than an hour to turn the ambulances around.

deputy Ó Murchú called on the government to publish and fund a multi-annual

workforce plan to double the number of paramedics and to increase both training and retention in the service.

He said: ‘the average ambulance response times locally are worrying and dangerous. It is clear that the Ambulance Service is under serious strain and pressure, which is exactly what paramedics in Louth

have been warning for years.

‘Figures obtained by Sinn Féin Health spokesperson david Cullinane show that almost one in five ambulances, 17%, were at the hospital for more than an hour.

‘the continuous decrease in the Ambulance Service’s ability to respond to life-threatening incidents within tar-

get timeframes shows that the government is failing to properly resource the service. People living in Louth will be anxious about the impact of this for people who need urgent care locally.

“this is putting patients in Louth at risk, and it is forcing paramedics to work extremely long hours. that is not good for the

individual paramedic, and many are concerned about the risk this presents to them, to patients, and to the public across Louth.

‘the Minister for Health, Stephen donnelly, must publish and fund a multi-annual workforce plan to double the number of paramedics and to increase both training and retention in the service. the

solutions are there and change can be delivered.

‘A serious plan is needed if the Ambulance Service is to reverse the trend and improve outcomes so that patients in Louth can get the urgent care they need when they need it. Sinn Féin in government would deliver the change needed to ensure the health service is fit for purpose’.

“Claire is an esteemed musician and has had write-ups in the new York times. It was a privilege to be able to perform as a soloist with the Orchestra,” said rosie.

The residents of St oliver’s community Hospital were thrilled by the visit of ‘Phil’s Farm’ with their selection of people friendly animals recently.

Kind Chloe walks 50k in four days to raise funds for autism classes

Chloe McCartney (holding bag) delivers toys and equipment to Claddagh Treasures Pre-School

A SEVEn-year-old dundalk girl has just finished a fundraiser in a bid to help children with additional needs.

Chloe McCartney from Greenfield Court walked and ran 50km in the month of July so she could raise funds to buy sensory toys and equipment.

the Gael Scoil dhun dealgan primary school pupil donated the toys and equipment to local children with autism/learning delays and to two local preschools.

Chloe has already delivered some of the donations including MiniMinds Preschool and to her brother’s class in Claddagh treasures Preschool on Monday last.

“She is so proud of herself.

When we donated the equipment and toys the kids were loving it,” said Chloe’s mother, donna.

“Her brother, Sean, is aged three and he inspired her to do this fundraiser. He is a late learner and Chloe wanted to do something to help him and other children.

“She started her challenge in the month of July and within four days she had reached her target of 50km.”

donna added: “She carried on for the full month and we tracked her steps on an app called Map My Walk.

“When she came back from her last walk her grandmother, Julia, had a cake waiting for her and sweets and balloons. It was

like a mini party for her.

“Her dad, Paul, was here too. He’s delighted for her. She absolutely loved it. Some people made donations and they also gave her a Smyth’s toy’s voucher for herself.”

She continued: “My dad, Jim, is a runner and he tried to encourage her to get into running but at first, she didn’t show a lot of interest. recently though, she did her first 2km Park Run.

“She originally got into fundraising because of her two grandfathers, both of whom were diagnosed with diabetes.

“Chloe is delighted she could help other children by doing this. She enjoyed doing it and we are very proud of her.”

Council begin enforcement of Ardee On Street Parking Bye-Laws

LouTh county council are set to begin the enforcement of on-street parking bye-laws in Ardee, County Louth, on 21st August 2023.

Motorists are advised that Traffic Wardens will be patrolling the town of Ardee as part of the enforcement campaign.

Pay parking was abolished in Ardee in 2014, and new two hours restricted parking bye laws for the mid Louth town originally came into effect on 18th March 2014.

Operating hours of the byelaws are 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday. During this time there is a maximum stay of two hours.

Once the two hour parking period has been reached a ve-

hicle is not permitted to park within the restricted area for at least one hour.

Traffic Wardens will log the make, model and registration number of vehicles parked in the restricted zone and if the vehicle is still parked within the restricted zone two hours after the initial log, a fine will be issued.

Wardens will also be policing illegal parking, parking in disabled parking bays and loading bays, the non display of a current tax disc and general traffic management within the restricted parking zone.

For a limited period, traffic wardens will issue advisory notices to any vehicles exceeding the permitted parking period,

with any subsequent offences being issued directly with a parking fixed penalty notice.

The fine amount for drivers issued with a fixed penalty notice for exceeding the two hours stay will be €40.

Recent amendments to the Parking Bye-Laws have allowed for the issue of residents permits to people living within the restricted parking zone.

Contact can be made with the Traffic Section of Louth county council for details of how to apply for a resident’s permit.

The bye-Laws are available to view on the Louth County Council website www.louthcoco.ie.

Mary is an All Ireland baking champion

A LOUtH woman has won the Supervalu All-Ireland Baking Championship at the Castleblayney Show on August Bank Holiday Monday.

Mary, who is originally from outside Ardee, has been living in tully on the border with Monaghan for 56 years since she got married.

“I had to make three baked goods and present them on a certain sized tray. I made a

tea brack, banana bread and four plain scones,” said Mary.

“I was judged on presentation, taste, and texture. there were

17 contestants with entrants from Counties Cork to Longford,

Cavan and Meath.

“It was my third time winning this competition, having previously won in 2018 and 2015. I didn’t expect to win. I was surprised when my name was called out.”

Mary was presented with her prize by Minister Heather Humphreys and the Chairman of Castleblayney Show, david Montgomery.

“I have four children; two girls and two boys. I also have five grand-

‘Make a joyful noise’ with dundalk’s newest choir singers and musicians invited to join vibrant new redemptorist Gospel choir

The community of St. Joseph’s Redemptorist church is delighted to announce the formation of a new Gospel Choir to add to its rich musical tradition.

As long as the church has been in Dundalk, it has been home to excellent music, from generations of bell ringers and boys’ choirs in the early days to the current popular and accomplished Redemptorist Choir under the direction of Musical Director Trevor clarke. As the newest addition to this offering, anyone with a passion for Gospel Music will be soon able to enjoy the uplifting, emotional pieces from a new Redemptorist Gospel Choir.

The choir will be directed by Paula Mul-

len, who developed a passion for Gospel music when she lived in the US, singing in several different

church and semi-professional gospel choirs in Boston and Washington D.c. “For me, there’s something

magical about singing Gospel music. There’s no doubt that movies like ‘Sister Act’ brought gospel music to a huge international audience, and I think everyone knows songs like ‘Oh Happy Day’. But I love the variety of moods and styles that have emerged through the years within gospel music - from the traditional African American Spiritual, to more classically influenced songs of popular gospel artists, right up to the contemporary pieces that blend gospel and rock,” said Paula. “To sing Gospel music you need to be versatile, enthusiastic and have a certain ‘zest’! We have always had more than our fair share of musical talent in Dundalk,

so I have no doubt that we will be able to build a choir that can create an authentic and uplifting gospel music experience for our listeners.”

Anyone who is interested in getting involved and giving their time and skills as a singer or musician on a voluntary basis can contact Paula for more information at dundalk.gospelchoir@cssr.ie.

children. My mother was a good cook and baker too,” she said.

“I was always interested in baking and sewing. I think the judges liked that my tray was nicely presented.

“It was nice and simple and my baking seemed to be excellent.

The judge loved the flavour and texture of my tea brack. My scones were very light and the banana bread was to a

high standard and well presented.”

Mary concluded: “I wasn’t expecting to win as there were so many entrants and the standard was really high. It was a great day.”

national Heritage Week from 12 – 20 August

tHIS year national Heritage Week returns from 12th to 20th August with a nine-day celebration of Ireland’s natural, built, and cultural heritage. A colourful range of events and projects celebrating all aspects of our heritage will take place across the region as communities, families, holiday makers and people of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to get out and explore their heritage.

Water naturally weaves its way through our heritage like a winding river through the landscape, connecting communities along its path and shaping local traditions. As an island nation, our history and our heritage have been shaped by the sea and the great Irish rivers, lakes and wetlands. Water Heritage day on Sunday 20th August is a celebration of water throughout Ireland, its history and heritage and our connections with it.

History shows that our natural waters are a mirror to society, they continually reflect what we do on land. Today, water quality in half of Ireland’s rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal waters is under pressure from agriculture, physical alterations to our rivers, forestry, wastewater treatment, and polluted waters from urban areas. to tackle these problems, we must work together towards a sustainable way of living, with healthy rivers and coastal environments reflecting a society that values good water quality and biodiversity for the benefits to our health, wellbeing, and prosperity.

the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPrO) is one of many public bodies working for better water quality in our rivers, lakes, and coastal waters. Ben Malone, Community Water Officer for Louth, commented, “Water Heritage day and national Heritage Week are a great opportunity for people to get out and about to explore all forms of heritage on their doorstep. there are plenty of events to choose from around the country that help connect people to their local river and coastal catchment and I would encourage communities and families across Louth to take part if they can. It’s a great opportunity to meet, greet and learn something new.”

A small sample of events that you can attend in County Louth includes:

• ‘Whale Watch Ireland 2023’ – a guided whale watch event at Clogherhead and good chance of seeing varied marine species local to the area on the day – 19th August.

• ‘A Walk in the Dunes at Baltray Beach’ - a walk in the dune system at Baltray beach focusing on succession ecology, birds, plants, habitats –19th August.

• ‘Water Heritage Day in Greenore!’ – celebrate water heritage day with a very practical and satisfying beach clean, followed by some inspiring talks by the Coastguard and a local historian on the history of Greenore port – 20th August.

For more information on events in County Louth, visit the national Heritage Week website www.heritageweek.ie and LAWPrO’s website www.lawaters.ie.

The days seem a little darker, since we have been apart, The light has somehow faded, When I see a rainbow, With the colours shining through, I see a light up to Heaven, That will lead me back to Pierce.

I know when my time is over, I’ll no longer be in pain, Then I can climb that rainbow, And we will meet again —Forever loved by your wife Rose.

This time, I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes, it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. say this prayer for three days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (Never known to fail). M.W.

O st Martha I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties thro the great favour thou didst enjoy when our saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have divine pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercode for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee st Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet.
