School board remain silent on GAA ban

UP to seventy Dundalk Grammar School students walked out of classes on Friday afternoon to hold a protest outside the front gates against what they call a ban on Gaelic Football in the school. This is the second protest this year from students in the school over the same issue with a number of students also demanding a U-Turn from the Board of Governors in the school last May.

The students claim that they have the full support of over 400 students in the school as well as 90% of teachers, the Parents and Teachers Association and parents in their quest to get Gaelic Football back on the school’s sport curriculum. Gaelic Football had previously been played in the school but has not been an option for students for a number of years.

Speaking at the protest, Louth GAA Chairman Sean McClean voiced his full support for students stating that Louth GAA were willing to back them every step of the way.

“It’s a pity we have to be here today to have a protest like this. Louth GAA completely support what you are doing here today and the protest you are making.

“If there’s anything we can do to help or any roadblocks that need moving we are more than willing to back you, whether that be in terms of equipment, gear or scheduling games. Whatever you need we’ll be there for you. We will work with you to make this happen as there is absolutely no reason that your school should be excluded from our schools programme. We fully appreciate your backing for GAA games,” stated Sean.

At the time of going to press, neither Dundalk Grammar School nor the School’s Board of Governors had responded to questions from the Dundalk Leader asking if there was officially a ban on Gaelic Football in the school. Students revealed that they also have not received a response from the Board of Governors to a letter they sent looking for answers to the following four questions.

1/ Why does Gaelic Football need to be sanctioned again? Gaelic Football was played in Dundalk Grammar School in the early 2000’s. The Junior School had coaching for 8 weeks from Louth GAA previously.

2/ When was Gaelic Football banned?

3/ Were other sports officially sanctioned in writing, and if so, when?

4/ Why is Gaelic Football banned in the school?

On August 28th the school headmaster Jonathan Graham, sent a letter to the students council informing them that Gaelic Football wouldn’t be included in the

school’s sports because the focus was on three sports only, hockey, soccer and rugby. Students questioned this logic given the fact a number of other sports are played in the school including Badminton, Athletics, Orienteering, Cricket and Basketball.

Speaking at the protest Callum Watters spoke of student’s frustrations over the continued refusal by the Board to allow Gaelic Football being played in the school.

“We just want the board to talk to us and explain to us why we are not allowed to play Gaelic Football like every other school in Dundalk,” stated Callum.

“In solidarity with the campaign we actually played a Lennon Cup match (Schools cup competition) against Ballymakenny recently and it was fantastic to be out there representing our school. Unfortunately, we were told a week later that the Chairman of the Board of Governors had sent out a letter saying that students wouldn’t be insured to play a non-sanctioned sport and that the team must withdraw from the

competition as the sport is banned. Again, no reason was given for this ban,” bemoaned Callum.

Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú spoke at the protest stating that students just wanted to represent the school with pride and should be allowed to do so.

Deputy Ó Murchú said the board of governors at the Grammar School ‘need to revisit’ the decision not to allow a GAA football team at the school. He said the students wanted to play sport, to play GAA football and they wanted to ‘brilliantly represent their school’.

He said: ‘We need to follow on with this protest until GAA football is allowed at the school. This is one of these issues that I have been contacted about by multiple parents, teachers and by students.

‘No-one can defend this decision. I know the media is looking for answers from the school’s board of governors, but we need the board to revisit this and we need them to allow the students to play football. We are in complete support of their campaign’.

Newly formed ‘Maxi’s Law’ group announce two upcoming events

Local Property Tax to remain the same following vote

ELECTED councillors of Louth County Council voted against increasing the Local Property Tax last Tuesday evening by a margin of 22 against and just four in favour.

Drogheda’s Labour’councillor Pio Smith had argued for an increase in the Local Property Tax rate stating that any money raised would have allowed the Council to spend up to €20million on projects in Drogheda but the proposal to increase the LPT for five years was soundly beaten

The proposal to increase the LPT for five years was defeated with 22 Councillors voting against, four in favour and three absent. The four in favour were Labour Councillors Pio Smith and Michelle Hall, John Sheridan of Fianna Fail and Marianne Butler of The Green Party.

No matter how small or large the amount, the principle I hold is that this is additional tax. I have taken this position since the Local Property Tax came in.

“We need to move to a point where the State is properly funding our councils, not just in Louth but across the country. It is utterly unacceptable in my view that we are required to turn to tax households that are already paying USC amongst many other taxes. There is no point shovelling out monies out in the budget and a week later councils having to try to raise additional funds for basic services.

Echoing the Cathaoirleach’s thoughts on the issue, Cllr. Maeve Yore, who proposed no change in the Local Property Tax, insisted that it is central government’s responsibility to fund the running of each local authority.

FRIENDS and family of Mark ‘Maxi’ Kavanagh have launched a new group called ‘Maxi’s Law’ which they will use to plead for change s to what they see a severe lack of mental health facilities across the country. The group’s ultimate aim is to pressurise the government into introducing a new law that states ‘all persons, regardless of wealth or status, attending a HSE facility, seeking support with mental health issues will receive that support there and then, even where this requires referral to a private facility at state expense’.

According to a spokesperson for the group Maxi’s Law is not just a plea for change- it’s a demand.

‘The lack of adequate mental health facilities and funding has claimed far too many lives—not just in our town, but across the country. For too long, our government has pinched pennies and swept these tragic deaths under the rug. We say no more.

“The time has come to stand up and protect the most vulnerable in our society. Maxi’s Law is not just a plea for change— it’s a demand. Through peaceful protests, we aim to make mental health reform a central issue in

the upcoming elections. We want every candidate to know: if you don’t stand with us, you stand against us.

“We will not support any candidate who does not stand firmly behind mental health reform. Our voices are strong, our cause is just, and we will be heard. This fight is not only for those we’ve lost but for those we can still save. Your silence is no longer an option,” stated a spokesperson for the group.

A public meeting will take place in the Clan na Gael hall on the ECCO Road next Tuesday at 22nd October at 7:30pm. The organisers invite everyone to this public meeting to discuss their campaign which will push for ‘Mental Health Access for All’

As well as this there is also a ‘Walk for Maxi’ organised for Saturday 26th October at 2pm which is a peaceful community event starting at the Síocháin Peace Garden (Fairgreen, opposite the pet shop) and concluding at the Market Square. The event will feature several guest speakers.

Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council Kevin Callan welcomed the fact that the Local Property Tax will not increase following a proposal to retain the rate as it currently stands being successful in a vote.

The special meeting of the council took place on Tuesday evening at County Hall where a vote was required to be taken within statutory timelines to vary the rate by up to 15 per cent and this would impact on households across the county.

Cllr Callan in seconding the proposal of Cllr Maeve Yore said that he fundamentally disagreed with a system that does not provide adequate monies from central government funds to local authorities at a time when the economy is apparently awash with surpluses and funds.

“My opinion and my position as a local elected representative is that people and households pay enough in general taxation and that this is an additional taxation.

“At our specially convened Local Property Tax Meeting, I proposed a zero /no change rate to Local Property Tax in County Louth saying and voting - as I have since elected in 2014 - it is central government’s responsibility to adequately fund the running of each local authority (which they haven’t done since Local Government Reform Act 2014)

“The tax paying public have also said to me they deserve and want accountability, ownership and value for their hard earned money and this 14 year old FF/ FG government is completely out of touch with the reality on the ground citing the recent budget, the shed, the pouches, the children’s hospital as prime examples.

“Labour Cllr Pio Smith proposed a 15% increase which was defeated by 22 votes to 4 with three counsellors absent so my proposal was carried. Thank you Cllr. Bernie Conlon for your support,” concluded Maeve.

Half of Louth’s 18 secondary schools have no special education needs classes

HALF of Louth’s 18 secondary schools have no special educational needs classes at all, Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has told the Dáil. The Sinn Féin TD raised the provision of special classes during a Topical Issue debate in Leinster House last week and said: ‘There are 18 secondary schools in Louth, including two grammar schools, but only nine of these have special needs classes’.

Deputy Ó Murchú said he had met with members of All Abilities Action Alliance Louth recently and ‘to put it another way, 50% of secondary schools in Louth have no special needs classes at all’.

He said: ‘Reference has been made to Louth having 72 special needs classes, which would cater for 432 children with special needs.

‘Of the nine schools that have special classes, however, one school has four special needs classes, four have three special needs classes, one has two special needs classes and three have only one special needs class.

‘That gives us a total of 21 classes. This is 29% of the target that Minister Hildegarde Naughton has spoken about.

‘When admission notices from the schools with these 21 classes

are examined, the following are the number of places for 2025: two schools have six places each; one school has four places; one school has three places; two schools have two places each; one school has one place, which is for girls only; and two schools have zero places.

‘The Minister can see the issue. We know what happens as a result - parents apply all over the place and for everything. There are constraints on schools as well and these need to be looked at.

‘I have spoken previously about the Education (Amendment) Bill 2024, which I brought forward. It would allow for parents of children with autism and other disabilities to apply two years beforehand, which would enable schools

to ensure all the services are ready. There is a significant number of issues here and a huge number of parents are under severe pressure’.

He said there had been 98 places delivered for 2024, but the plan had been for 101 and three classes that were planned had not materialised.

He said: ‘I am aware of people doing a huge level of work but we also know that for families this is incredibly stressful. Nobody knows if they will actually get a place. I am also aware that a huge amount of people spoke about their child being autistic with an intellectual disability and they are looking at a number of schools.

‘In some special schools, they fall below the criteria and in others they do not have sufficient difficulties to fall into that school. It adds to problems.

‘There are 24 individual places for the whole county. It is nowhere near the necessary target capacity. There are 75 special needs classes at primary level and 23 at secondary level.

‘It is expected that demand will exceed the current supply of 24 places in 21 classes. That states exactly what the situation is. There is not enough capacity. We must make sure that is delivered’.

Scoil Mhuire na nGael Scoops Top European Award for Digital Education Practices

SCOIL Mhuire na nGael, Dundalk, has become one of the first primary schools in Europe to achieve European Digital Schools Awards status. Launched in 2021, the Digital Schools Awards European programme was created to encourage and recognise innovation, collaboration and skills development in digital technology amongst schools. It is backed by the European Commissions’ Erasmus+ programme, national government bodies and leading technology companies led by HP.

Scoil Mhuire na nGael is one of the first schools in Ireland to receive the award which recognises and celebrates best practice in digital education.

To achieve European Digital Schools status, the Dundalk based school had to demonstrate strong leadership in digital education and provide sufficient access to resources and infra-

to develop and embed digital learning into the curriculum. Ensuring that our pupils have access to the equipment, resources and support to develop their skills and literacy in this area has been top of our agenda for some time, but the European Digital Schools Award programme has given us the momentum to drive forward new strategies.

structure. Their school culture, professional development strategies and teaching practices were also assessed as part of the submission.

The European Digital Schools Awards requires schools to use the European Commission’s SELFIE self-reflection tool to assess their digital learning and teaching practices and identified areas where improvements can be made. As part of the programme, teachers were given ac-

cess to expert support and resources to help them develop their digital curriculum and ensure pupils are given the skills they need to navigate the modern world.

Lisa Jones, Principal of Scoil Mhuire na nGael, said: “To be one of the first primary schools in Europe to receive this award is such an achievement, and our school community is very excited by it.

“Both our teachers and pupils have worked hard

“The European Digital Schools Award has opened up channels for collaboration, both within our school community and with counterparts in other countries, and we have built close working relationships with educational professionals across Europe.

“We are proud of the achievements of our school, and we will continue to share best practices with our friends across the continent.”

HEAD in the Game, a group that was initially set up by a group of Dundalk FC fans, with the goal of starting a positive conversation about mental health and well-being in the Irish football community, and wider Irish society, have released a strongly worded statement calling on the Irish government to provide more funding and services for the Irish Mental Health sector.

The call comes on World Mental Health Day and was triggered by the passing of Dundalk FC supporter Mark Maxi Kavanagh.

According to the Head in the Game statement, Mark was in the middle of a severe mental crisis and after waiting hours at Crosslanes Department of Psychiatry at Drogheda without support his mental state deteriorated and he attempted to take his life by suicide. He was placed on life support and sadly passed away eight days later. His death came four years after his good friend Harry Taaffe who also sought help at Crosslanes.

“Head In The Game would like to use World Mental Health Day to highlight the severe lack of effective services for those struggling with a mental health crisis.

“In September, a high profile Dundalk FC and League of Ireland supporter, Mark “Maxi” Kavanagh, visited Crosslanes Department of Psychiatry at Drogheda as he was in the mid-

dle of a severe mental health crisis. After several hours waiting at the facility without support, Mark’s situation deteriorated.

“A couple of hours later, Mark had left the hospital and attempted to take his life by suicide. Mark was placed on life support and sadly lost his battle just 8 days later at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. Mark unfortunately passed away by suicide. This is just one of several similar stories we have heard since, not only at this facility but countless others across Ireland.

“Head In The Game was established to promote a positive discussion around individuals Mental Health and we have constantly encouraged people to speak up when they are struggling. We have been left extremely angry when someone in a vulnerable state actively seeks professional help and upon doing so, does not receive the urgent care and support they require.

“Aidan Larkin, chairperson for Head In The Game states:

“Irish society is changing and we are all talking about mental health more and more. People are recognising that they are struggling with their mental health and are going to seek help, but the help just isn’t there. This is totally unacceptable in this day and age. I want to call on the Irish government to provide more funding and services for the Irish

mental health sector and I also want to call on the minister for health, Stephen Donnelly, to do a full review into Department of Psychiatry at Crosslanes in Drogheda and other psychiatric departments around the country, how they initially assess people when they present themselves in a severe mental health crisis.

“There are countless stories across the country where people are presenting to these departments in a severe crisis, then either being turned away or not receiving the urgent care they need and unfortunately losing their lives, in the same way Mark

“Maxi” Kavanagh did. Over four years ago Harry Taaffe, who Head In The Game was founded after also was turned away after seeking help from this department.

“Now is the time for the Irish government to step up and do better for the mental health of all Irish people”.

“Today, on World Mental Health Day 2024, Head In The Game call upon the Irish Government to re-evaluate their care for those in a mental health crisis. We also call on the Football Association of Ireland to assist Head In The Game in using their voice to encourage improved mental health facilities & supply sufficient staff for all of those involved in football in Ireland,” concluded the statement

Louth Volunteer Centre seeks to recognise special volunteer leaders

LOUTH Volunteer Centre is once again putting out the call for nominations for the Louth Volunteer Leader Awards. Behind every group of volunteers, is a great Volunteer Leader. This person might coordinate the group, ensure volunteers are supported and generally keep the show together. They rarely take the limelight, often toiling away behind the scenes and are not often recognised for their incredible work.

This year, Louth Volunteer Centre are running the awards in collaboration with the Louth Public Participation Network (Louth PPN). This is our county’s network of community, voluntary, social inclusion and environmental organisations, working together to enhance the quality of life of our citizens.

Every Leader nominated will receive a personal thank you card and certificate and be

invited to a lunch event in the Imperial Hotel in Dundalk on the 5th of November, to coincide with the 2024 International Volunteer Managers Day.

Two particularly deserving Leaders will be announced at the event, as overall winners of the Louth Volunteer Leader Awards. The two categories are: Co. Louth Volunteer Leader of the Year and Leading Young Volunteers.

Do you know someone who goes the extra mile as a Volunteer Leader? Perhaps they are the first to step up when extra responsibility is called for. Or they inspire young people in your community to give of their time to benefit others. Then please nominate them for the Louth Volunteer Leader Awards and show them that what they do is recognised, truly appreciated and celebrated!

Dundalk musicians strum together for Darragh

DUNDALK Ukulele Strummers hosted a wonderful fundraiser last Thursday afternoon for three year old Darragh Brangan who was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Three-year old Darragh was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at the age of eighteen months early last year. The news came as a shock to parents Zoe and Gordon Brangan whose world turned upside down when they were given the news in Crumlin hospital. Zoe is originally from Dromiskin and is now living

with husband Gordon and their three children Ellie (4), Katie (18 months) and Darragh (3) in Tara, Meath.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a degenerative muscle wasting condition, and while Zoe and Gordon live in hope, presently there is no cure. Darragh has severe muscle weakness which will progress, and as his parents watch their son achieve all his milestones a little later than most, they will likely have to watch as he loses them too.

Darragh’s grandmother Ann McQuillan, who hails from

Marion Park, is a member of Dundalk Ukulele Strummers and the group under the watchful eye of group leader Patricia Prenty put on a fundraising concert on Thursday afternoon to help raise funds to help Darragh’s parents adapt their home in Tara, Meath to make it safer for Darragh.

Students from the CBS Primary attended the gig which was played in beautiful sunshine with Darragh himself along with his parents Zoe and Gordon watching on in the crowd.

Cllr McGeough has warned of the latest scam that he fears many could fall for

SINN FEIN COUNCILLOR

Pearse McGeough has hit out at a recent scam message he received and has warned people to be vigilant given the genuine looking nature of some of these messages.

He said “I received a text message advising me that I was eligible for a discounted electricity bill and I could apply by hitting the link. The link takes you to a replica of the Government site but as you scroll down there is a ‘verify now’ button which you should NOT press.

“When I went onto the genuine website, there are slight differences but most telling of all,

was the absence of the ‘verify now’ button.”

Cllr McGeough warned, “You do not have to apply for the en-

ergy payments, they will be automatically credited to your energy bill. All domestic electricity customers will receive €250 paid in 2 instalments, one before the end of the year and one after the new year. To be safe, assume these are scammers.

“People are hurting at the minute because of the high cost of living and these scam messages seem plausible because we know that measures were announced in the Budget. It is heart-breaking to think that these scammers are targeting those in society that need this money the most,” stated Pearse.

Poker Classic fundraiser in Lisdoo

ONE of the biggest and most popular fundraisers in town returns this year after raising over €2500 for the North Louth hospice and Southern Area Hospice (Newry) last year. The annual Five Card Draw Poker Classic organised by Gerry Curtis and Micheál Stanley will take place in the Lisdoo on Sunday 27th October. The event has been raising money for local charities for over ten years and this year all proceeds will go to the North Louth Hospice.

Tickets for this year’s event are priced at €50 with €5 buy ins and a €10 top up. Refreshments will be served on the night also.

Tickets are available to purchase from both Gerry Curtis and Micheál Stanley. Gerry is hoping that the event will be well supported as always and he looks forward to handing over a cheque to the North Louth Hospice following the event. Gerry knows from first-hand experience the great work done by the North Louth Hospice having volunteered for them in the past. The evening begins at 6pm on the 27th of October and all are welcome.

This will be Gerry Curtis’ final time organising the Poker Clasic after helping to raise tens of thousands for local charities

over the past decade. According to Gerry he feels it is time to hand over the reins and he is hopeful that the Poker Classic will continue to raise money for local charities.

North Louth Hospice who have been the beneficiaries of the Poker Classic thanked Gerry and his team for their marvelous fundraising efforts down through the years which they say have been invaluable in terms of helping local people who use their service. They wished him the very best of luck in the future and urged people to come out and support what will be Gerry’s final Poker Classic.

Time may hide the sadness, Like a smile can hide a tear, But memories last forever, Of a sister I loved so dear. I’ll never fail to pray for you, I’ll never cease to care, I wish I could go home, And find you waiting there. —From your loving sister Teresa.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours This time, I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes, it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (Never known to fail). M.B.

Prolific Seán all set to launch his third book of poetry in three years

LOCAL poet Seán Brannigan is all set to release his forthcoming book of poetry, Where Beauty Streams next month. The launch takes place in the Basement Gallery of the Town Hall on Thursday November 7th at 6.45 pm. The new book consists of a collection of 45 of his poems, some with local interest, several relating to Ireland, to current and historic affairs, humour, conflict, travel, song lyrics, growing old, love, etc. A really good mix. The book has been funded by Create Louth, the Arts department of Louth County Council to whom Seán is particularly grateful. Seán is hoping for a large attendance on the night to heighten the enjoyment and share in the occasion of his third book in three years.

Attached is a sample piece, written in memory of Seán’s old friend and fellow poet, Jim Craven, a larger-than-life local character and a fine writer prior to his tragic death several years ago. Local poet, Seán Brannigan.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS

I walk along ancestral streets among a million pretty girls, desire and inspiration raging in my head. Craven, they raised your expectation too so Jim, I’m following where you led.

Literature gave me life and love a torrent of long cloistered thoughts conceived in the fertile prison of a marriage bed.

You’d ask no explanation so Jim, I’m following where you led.

Too many pints in public places but no, never enough ! Too long being kissed by Judas faces, at last embraced by truth. There’s poetry in a full glass and a soul fed on lies is dead so Jim, I’m following where you led.
