LIGHT RELIEF

Darkness Into Light Dundalk celebrate as Pieta confirm new services for Louth

DARKNESS into Light Dundalk chairman Sean Kelly, expressed delight and pride following the news that Pieta will launch a new in-person support service at the Redeemer Family Resource Centre in Dundalk. The service is expected to be up and running by September.

The news came less than a fornight after the Darkness Into Light Dundalk committee announced that they were regrettably cancelling this year’s event due to the lack of presence of Pieta in the town. Pieta are a free service with 22 locations in Ireland, helping people in suicidal distress or self harm.

That decision seemingly has got the ball rolling with regards to reaching a service level agreement with the HSE in order for Pieta to provide their services in Dundalk.

Reacting to the news, Sean Kelly said that hope is finally home.

‘We did it’! WE DID IT . Seven years of hard work has paid off, Dundalk is getting an in-person support service from Pieta at the Redeemer Resource Centre. Another vital service for mental health is being delivered for the town.

“Darkness into Light started here in Dundalk as a conversation between a couple of friends one night seven years ago in the Crowne Plaza. Now we have delivered for the town. It’s a proud day. Thank you to all our committee members, both past and present, the volunteers, our sponsors and you, our supporters, who have been with us every year. Dundalk is at its best when people come together. Hope is finally home. One very proud Event Director,” stated Kelly.

Birches

AGM tomorrow evening

THE Birches (the north Louth branch of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland) will hold its AGM at its day care centre on the Priorland Road, Dundalk this Thursday (April 18th) at 7pm. Its monthly Saturday Morning Social Club takes place this Saturday from 11am to 1pm in St. Gerard’s Hall, St. Alphonsus Road.

Last week Pieta House pledged that they would work hard to deliver a service for the people of Louth via a physical building in the town and they made good on that pledge on Sunday evening when they announced that they will be launching a new in-person support service at the Redeemer Resource Centre in Dundalk.

“Pieta is pleased to announce that we will soon be launching a new inperson support service at the Redeemer Family Resource Centre in Dundalk.

“We expect to open the service in September 2024, pending completion of the necessary logistics and staffing arrangements.

This shows our commitment to enhancing services for people in Louth in suicidal distress or engaging

in self-harm. This has involved considerable work by many people over a number of months, and we

extend our sincere thanks to everyone involved.

“Pieta relies on our generous supporters to fund

our services, and 100% of the funding for this service comes from donations. We remain committed to ensuring the long-term sustainability of our services.

We’ll keep working closely with our four Louth Darkness Into light committees, local community, authorities, and the HSE to help ensure the long-term viability of this resource.

We continue to offer a variety of supports in Louth via phone and online counselling services, as well as having a local Suicide Bereavement Liaison Officer. We’re also working with children throughout the county through our school programmes.

“For immediate assistance, our crisis helpline is

available 24/7 at 1800 247 247. Those seeking therapy can contact us at 0818 111 126, and schools interested in our resilience and wellbeing programs can reach out to us at amberflag@ pieta.ie and resilience@pieta.ie.

“We’re grateful to the people of Louth, our dedicated volunteers, the four hardworking Darkness into Light committees in Louth, the Redeemer Family Resource Centre and the local HSE . Your steadfast support is vital in our mission to reduce suicide and self-harm nationwide and support those affected by suicide,” concluded the statement.

‘Deplorable situation’ as HSE admit waiting time of nine months for disability service

LOCAL Fianna Fáil councillor Conor Keelan has hit out at the chronic delays for service users for both adults and children in Mounthamilton House in Dundalk. Mounthamilton House on the Carrick Road offer services for children and adults with complex needs due to a disability.

Responding to a query raised by Cllr Keelan at the February Regional Health Forum meeting about the current long waiting times for service users at Mounthamilton House, the HSE stated that current waiting times were nine months

on average. The lengthy waiting lists according to the HSE are down to the fact that there is a significant recruitment challenge at present with a current vacancy rate of 47% in key therapy professions.

“The North Louth Children’s Disability Network Team (CDNT) provides services and supports to over 700 children with complex needs arising from a disability and/or developmental delay who live in the North Louth Community Healthcare Network. The waiting time for the CDNT is currently nine months.

“The North Louth CDNT are experiencing significant recruitment challenges at present and have a current vacancy rate of 47% in key therapy professions including; Physiotherapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Psychology, all of which is having a significant impact on service delivery.

This is replicated across CDNTs nationally and the National Disability Office along with national and local HR departments are exploring all options to address the current vacancies as soon as possible.

“In addition, the Head of Service for Disability Services is also working with the HR Department on a plan as to how these posts may be filled and CHO8 has been approved to run local campaigns for Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Physiotherapy. These recruitment campaigns are currently underway.

“The HSE is also currently actively engaged in various recruitment

initiatives to fill vacant posts, i.e. international recruitment which, if successful, will positively impact on waiting times for all disciplines,” read the response from the HSE.

According to Cllr. Keelan the response from the HSE confirmed that there are chronic delays for service users for both adults and children.

“This is a deplorable situation and it needs to be looked at,” stated Cllr. Keelan. This is affecting people’s education, healthcare and even affecting people’s access to public housing.

“I raised a query at the February Regional Health Forum regarding service delays in

Louth for disability services in Mounthamilton House and the response confirmed that the waiting lists are nine months for people trying to access these services. It’s not good enough. The HSE say there is a current vacancy rate of 47% for key service professions and it is imperative that these vacancies are filled as soon as possible.

“For my part I am going public with this and I will get it raised at the highest possible level in the Oireachtas. People are being forced to go north of the border or to go private and that is a bad reflection on disability services in Louth in 2024,” stated Cllr. Keelan.

Jimmy Hasty documentary nominated for Sports Emmy

A DOCUMENTARY which tells the incredible story of Jimmy Hasty has been nominated for a prestigious Sports Emmy award. The 45th Annual Sports Emmy® Awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 21, at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, Broadway at 60th Street, New York City.

“One-Armed Wonder: The Extraordinary Story of Jimmy Hasty” tells the incredible story of a Belfast born Dundalk footballer from the 1960’s, who had only one arm! Twenty-six minutes long, the documentary follows the life of Jimmy Hasty, who can only be described as an icon amongst Dundalk folk. The documentary has been nominated in

the Outstanding Short Documentary section.

In July 1950, when he was 14 years old, he lost his left arm in an industrial accident on his first day at work at Jennymount Mill in Belfast. He joined Newry Town in the second tier in Northern Ireland and caught the eye of then Dundalk Chairman Jim Malone who was bowled away by Hasty’s talent. Malone had huge belief in Hasty and after a battle to convince the board that it would be a good idea to sign a one-armed player the Belfast player became a professional footballer before helping Dundalk win their first league in 30 years.

He returned to Belfast where 11 years later he was murdered by the

UVF leaving a widow and two small boys.

He is probably best known amongst Dundalk supporters for scoring a goal in the European Cup and being involved in the other as Hasty helped Dundalk beat Swiss side, F.C. Zurich 2-1 away from home. This Dundalk squad became the first Irish side to win away from home in European Football.

Jimmy Hasty was

not only an incredible footballer, who made spectators forget about his missing arm, but an inspiration to anyone struggling in the game because of a disability. The documentary has already been widely lauded since its release last year and has picked up a number of awards including the Jury Special Prize award at the annual Sportel Awards, held in Monaco.

This award is presented each year to the best sports documentary across all sports, not just football.

Speaking to the Dundalk Leader last year after that win in Monaco, Richard Milway, a staff producer of Noah Media Group, produced and directed the documentary,

thanked all who had contributed to the making of the programme including the Hasty and Malone families, Dundalk FC and other contributors, including the four surviving teammates of Jimmy.

They are John Murphy, Francie Callan Patsy McKeown and Davy McArdle. The four were recently presented to the crowd at half time, marking the 60th anniversary of the win in Zurich. Dundalk were the first Irish side to win a European match away from home. Speaking about the award Richard said the recognition of the documentary from Sportel was testament to what an incredible man Jimmy Hasty was. “UEFA and Noah

Media Group had talks of a documentary series based on untold stories relating to UEFA competitions. Researching we came across the player with one arm who scored in the European Cup and everything went from there.”

“We were absolutely delighted to win the Jury Special Prize at the awards night in Monaco. The Jury Special Prize celebrates the best of Sport TV production, with awards decided by a jury consisting of sports and media personalities. The Jury Special Prize is awarded to their favourite entry from across all categories. Noah Media Group which is where I work also won the Best Documentary prize for Villeneuve Pironi,” ex-

Katelynn shines at national indoor championships

THE All-Ireland Juvenile Indoor Championships in Athlone proved hugely successful for the local St Gerard’s Athletic Club with the Dundalk club finishing second overall in the final medal table having captured nine golds, three silver and three bronze during the Championships. No mean feat considering there were over 2,000 athletes from 141 clubs all over Ireland competing at the event.

St Gerard’s Athletic Club athlete Katelynn Woods was one of the many athletes from the club who excelled at the Championships with the eleven-year old Knockbridge native taking home two gold and a bronze from the national championships. It was just reward for Katelynn who trained hard all through the winter and cold early months of this year to get ready for the championships.

Katelynn, who joined

St Gerards, when she was seven, is a big fan of multisports events and is looking to follow in the footsteps of her idol Kate O’Connor who also trained with St Gerards and who brought home a silver from the Commonwealth Games two years ago. Katelynn brought home gold in the 600m (1m 45.06) and shot putt (8.70 metres) and bronze in the 60m with a time of 8.7 seconds. That 600m time was just half a second off the na-

tional record and illustrates just how much potential she has.

Watched on by her proud coaches Sean Moran and Christian Maas, Katelynn took everything in her stride as she claimed her three medals and according to her parents Charlene and Pierce she is in love with the sport and takes everything, even competing at national championships, very much in her stride.

Birches Tea Party

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s Birches Day Centre in Dundalk and Treagh Lodge Day Centre in Drogheda will join the celebrations with a Tea Day event on Saturday, 11th May from 11am to 2pm.

plained Richard. “The recognition for the documentary is testament to what an incredible man Jimmy Hasty was. His story transcended sport and I’m very happy to see it resonating with audiences who otherwise may never have heard of Jimmy. I felt very privileged that both the Malone and Hasty families – particularly his widow Margaret – entrusted me to tell this story, and I couldn’t have had more support from Dundalk FC or the town in general.

“Filming in Dundalk felt very much like a celebration of Jimmy’s life, whereas the days in Belfast with his family were understandably more sombre. It really brought home how his needless

Hollands lift three golds

SCOTT, Lucy and Jay all completed at the AIPO (Amateur Irish Powerlifting Organisation) nationals in Limerick last month with all three winning gold and between them setting eight new national records.

First up was Lucy in the T2 under 18s, who had an amazing day in only her second comp. She squatted 90kg benched 35 kg and deadlifted 92.5 for a total of 217.5 kg. That was good enough for gold and four new national records.

Second up was Scott in the T1 under 16s.

Scott squatted 132.5 kg ,bench 75kg and ended the day with an amazing 147.5 deadlift to total 355 kg at only 14. Again he also set three new national records and went 8 for 9 on the day ,his only fault coming on his 3rd squat where his knee was not wrapped properly (by his dad!) and was not allowed to attempt his 3rd lift.

Jay was next up and he squatted 245 kg ,benched 135 and deadlifted 225 kg for a total of 605 in the 82.5 junior category.

He had two new national records on the day to add to his amazing amount of national and World records. Jay doubled up on the day as lifter and coach to his

brother and sister and although he was busy, managed to do a great job all round. The three Holland kids along with their dad have now qualified to represent Ireland in the upcoming world’s in August. Jay is busy preparing a new programme for them to start training for the

championship which will be held in Ireland this year. The Hollands would like to thank Megapump , Goldstar Jewellers ,Ma Bradys and Joe’s shop for their continued support. Kevin and Jay would also like to thank Ruari McCann for all his help during prep for nationals.

killing still impacts their lives today.

“I knew little about Irish football in the ‘60s at the start of this journey and what I found amazing was how people had such great memories of past eras and wanted to pass them down to the next generations. It was clear from filming at a game how passionate the Dundalk fans are and what a big part the club plays in the community.

“The information came from the club itself and their historian, as well as from local newspapers of the time,” added Richard.

The documentary is still available on RTE and Virgin on demand. It can also be watched for free on UEFA TV when you register.

Cross Cooley Challenge

THE 12th Annual Cross Cooley Challenge takes place this year on Saturday the 18th of May. The walk will raise much needed funding for our two local worthy causes North Louth Hospice and the Marie Goretti Foundation at Lordship. NEWS in Brief

Ciarán puts his name forward for local election

DUNDALK man Ciarán Fisher has announced he is running as an independent candidate in the local election this June.

Originally from Pearse Park, the 34-yearold currently lives with his fiancé, Emma Hennessy from Blackrock and their one-year-old daughter, Lara, on Jocelyn Street.

“I am a secondary school teacher. I teach English and History at Colaiste Chu Chulainn; I’ve been working there for nine years now,” said Ciarán.

He is a passionate sports fan and a big Dundalk FC supporter. Ciarán is also a volunteer and coach for Bellurgan United and is involved with FC Santos, a winter league team in Dundalk.

“I attended Gael Scoil Dhun Dealgan in Muirhevnamor, and Coláiste Ris Secondary School. I live and work in town,” he said.

“There are issues with litter, dumping, trees that need cutting and potholes. Some people I know have suggested I put myself forward as a local election candidate.

“I volunteer with the Tidy Town’s Committee and for the Meals on Wheels. Some people told me to go for it.”

Ciarán added: “The population of the town has increased in recent years and we need to make sure the people living here have adequate facilities.

“Young people need a positive outlet and proper sports facilities. We’ve had record rain over the previous few months and it has revealed the need for drains to be unblocked.

He continued: “I’m running for election because I see issues and problems. I don’t see myself as a career politician.

“The other area I intend to focus on is helping animal support groups. I’m a big dog lover and have two rescue greyhounds, Maud, aged four, and Cyril, aged six.

“And I would like the water of Dundalk to be regularly tested. For many houses, it’s coming out brown. I want regular and transparent testing.”

Ciarán concluded: “We need a sensible and straightforward housing policy that contributes to the fabric of the town and the locality.

“Housing estates need facilities and green spaces that will enable them to be communities.”

If anyone would like to contact Ciarán about the election the issues he has raised or if you have any concerns, please send an email to ciaránfisher@hotmail.com.

“If elected, the main areas I want to focus on are sport and recreation; making the town more accessible to people with mobility issues; cleaning and maintaining safer public spaces; and removing graffiti and dumped litter.”

Laura to take on incredible Nepal challenge for charity

O’Driscoll is fundraising for the Maria Goretti Foundation by taking part in a race in Nepal next week.

Originally from Dowdallshill but currently living in Ravensdale, Laura is set to compete in the Annapurna Himal race in Nepal.

It’s an eight-day stage race at altitude with approximately 265km and 11,000m climbing. In addition to the stage race, Laura plans to do a three-day acclimatisation trek, a 120km journey by foot, with 8,000m climbing back to Kathmandu.

Laura is a running coach and yoga teacher and has been to Nepal twice before. She describes the place as a “home from home”.

“I was supposed to do a longer version of the race in 2020 but then Covid-19 hit so the race was postponed,” she said. “I’m now working for myself so I can’t take as much time off so I’ll be going to Nepal for three weeks.

“I’ll be on foot for 17 days. There is acclimatisation for three days; the race is eight days and I will stay on for six more days as a non-competitor.”

Laura added: “I’ve been running since I was six-years-old. I started off as a sprinter. I’m with the North East Runners and I also do yoga for athletes.

“Diet-wise, I have to eat a lot of calories. I’ve a healthy enough diet but when I’m food shopping I’d be looking for

items with the highest calorie count.”

She continued: “I am hoping to raise funds for the Maria Goretti Foundation for children with disabilities and life-limiting conditions,” said Laura.

“The work the Maria Goretti Foundation puts into enhancing the lives of these young warriors and their families is abso-

lutely life changing.

“Please support if you can; a euro for every 1,000 metre of elevation gained. It’s 19,000m. Or any wee bit would be warmly appreciated.

Louth Volunteer Centre host

annual Volunteer Fair

LOUTH Volunteer Centre is delighted to be hosting their Volunteer Fair in The Barbican Centre in Drogheda on Tuesday 23rd of April. The fair will take place from 11am to 1pm and is a fantastic opportunity to meet lots of different organisations from across County Louth and see what volunteer roles they have available and how you can get involved.

There are so many volunteer opportunities available in County Louth sometimes it can

be difficult to figure out where to start or know what it is you want to do. The volunteer fair is a great opportunity for volunteers to chat with a number of different organisations and get a better sense of what is available and how they can support says Olivia Conlon Interim Manager of Louth Volunteer Centre.

Along with a number of different organisations highlighting their volunteer opportunities on the day, Louth Volunteer Centre will be there to give infor-

mation and support people in registering with Louth Volunteer Centre where they will then have access to IVOL which is the National volunteering database. Everyone is welcome to attend on the day, and no previous volunteer experience is needed; there is something for everyone.

For those that attend on the day there will be an opportunity to learn more about the Louth Community Volunteer program which supports events and urgent

community support and an opportunity to get involved in the research being carried by Louth Volunteer Centre as part of the County Louth Volunteering Framework. This is a fantastic opportunity for people to have their say about volunteering in County Louth and help shape the future of volunteering.

Louth Volunteer Centre hopes to see as many people as possible in the Barbican Centre in Drogheda

Tuesday 23rd of April from 11am to 1pm.
