A brilliant performance from Amy Broadhurst saw her join an elite club on Monday afternoon when she won her quarter final bout at the IBA Boxing World Championships in Istanbul. The Muirhevnamor southpaw beat Serbia’s Jelena Janicijevic to guarantee herself at least a bronze medal in the light welterweight division (63kg). Amy has now become only the third Irish woman to medal at the world championships joining Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington on that prestigious list. Later on Monday evening, Roscommon teenager Lisa O’Rourke would add her name to that esteemed list when she also won her quarterfinal tie in the 70kg division. Continued on Page 2
Amy Broadhurst will take home at least a bronze medal for Ireland.

Brilliant Amy Broadhurst is Going for Gold From Page 1 Amy impressed all five judges with her display against her Serbian opponent winning unanimously on all cards as she swept into the semi-finals. She will try and upgrade that bronze to at least silver today when she takes on Parveen from India for a place in the final. Amy’s victory on Monday was the realisation of a childhood dream and after her bout she expressed her joy having finally won a medal on the world stage having come so close on three previous occasions. “A childhood dream has come true! At least a world bronze medal. I’ve tried and tried and failed at the hurdle every single time at world championships for a medal and today my dream finally came true! Ranked At least no.3 in the world! Box-
ing India on Wednesday in the semi-final, I’ve the confidence and belief that I CAN do this. Let’s go!”, stated Amy. As well as the prestige and joy the medal will bring to Amy there is also the small matter of financial gain to with this year’s championships seeing prize money being offered to medal winners for the first time. Amy has already guaranteed herself €21,500 having secured at least a bronze medal but if she can win today in her semi-final bout she will double her earnings and take home €43,000. Should she do the unthinkable and win gold Amy will return to Dundalk with a cheque for €86,230. Amy was able to enjoy her proudest moment in the sport with her mother Sheila and dad Tony who are in Istanbul supporting their
daughter and on Monday evening her Dad Tony, explained what Amy’s victory meant to the family. “For us watching Amy win that fight was the culmination of a lifetime dream for our daughter. She has wanted to medal at a world championships since she was a kid and although dreams hardly ever come true this one most definitely
has,” stated Tony. “She has been very dominant all the way through the competition so far and has given each of her opponents standing counts. Before her quarter-final she was quoting the Rocky movie to us saying ‘Whatever I hit, I destroy’ laughs Tony. “Then when she went out for her fight against the Serbian girl
the whole crowd were chanting Serbia so she really did feel like she was in a Rocky movie,” he added. The semi-final on Wednesday will be tough. I’ve seen plenty of the Indian girl and she is very good if you let her do what suits her. She has already eliminated two world class boxers en route to the semi’s but I know Amy has the fight that can
beat her. Amy has been very impressive winning every round thus far and giving all of her opponents standing counts but it still has to be produced on the day. We are down to four champions now in Amy’s division having started with 28 and we are hoping that Amy can go on and be the last woman standing on Thursday evening,” concluded Tony. Amy Broadhurst.

Disability services for children in Louth ‘shocking’ The ‘shocking’ state of disability services for children in Louth and Meath has been highlighted in Leinster House by Sinn Féin TDs Ruairí Ó Murchú and Darren O’Rourke. The Louth and Meath representatives secured a Topical Issue debate in the chamber on Thursday evening where Deputy Ó Murchú told the government about the impact the chronic shortages in staff in Dundalk were having on children and their families. The Dundalk TD revealed how there are no occupational therapists in paediatric services at the HSE primary care centre in Barrack Street, Dundalk, with four vacant posts to be recruited and one maternity leave vacancy., leaving hundreds of children waiting for help. Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘Unfortunately, in the context of all of these issues,
Ruairí Ó Murchú, TD. there is always an element of Groundhog Day. ‘That is something we need to address. We cannot continue having these same conversations.
‘There had been a failure to fill vacant posts (in Dundalk) via agency recruitment, but there will be a recruitment competition alongside three other CHOs to fill senior vacancies. ‘It will be late autumn before any successful applicants are appointed. What we are talking about is 659 children on the waiting list for primary care, occupational therapy or paediatric assessment. ‘Some 382 of those children have been on the list more than a year. The average waiting time is three years.’ He also highlighted some of the cases that had been brought to his attention by families. He said: ‘I am dealing with a nine-year-old boy with global development delay, which involves mental and physical issues. His father has been told that for occupational thera-
programmes. Obviously, this is not fit-for-purpose. We must get serious about workforce planning. We know what numbers we have, but we need an assessment of how many people we need and we must find any means possible to ensure we can employ those people. ‘Looking down the line, we must ensure there is a throughput of people being trained. ‘It is also about ensuring we facilitate people with work visas and whatever else is necessary. As we can see, the cost of not doing this is astronomical’.
py and speech and language therapy, he could be waiting another eight to 12 months for an appointment. ‘He was initially with the early intervention team in Drogheda until he was six, and then he was moved to the children’s team in Dundalk. He got access to services in October 2019. ‘While I accept that Covid created difficulties, he has not got any face-to-face speech and language therapy in the interim. ‘An occupational therapist has visited since we became involved but, obviously, that is not sufficient to cut the
mustard. ‘We are also dealing with a mam with an autistic fouryear-old who is not toilet trained and cannot get a place in a school. ‘There was a family intervention meeting and the mother was told that no therapies would be possible for a couple of months. ‘This child is not toilet trained and that is creating specific difficulties. The problem is that the child cannot get a place in a special school or in a regular school until that is resolved. ‘The only thing the mother is being offered is parenting

County Council announces Omeath Placemaking Regeneration Consultant Appointment Louth County Council has announced the appointment of BDP Ltd as the Architectural Lead Design Consultants for the Omeath Placemaking Scheme. Speaking about the project, Kevin Mcgann Landscape Architect from BDP said, ‘BDP are delighted to be involved in this exciting project that will bring an enhanced public realm to Omeath. We look forward to working with Louth County Council and the local community to deliver on the aspirations and objectives for the scheme.’ The project will regenerate the heart of the village with improvements to the public realm that will build on the huge tourist potential of the village with
the Great Eastern Greenway running through its heart. The planned works will enhance the experience of people visiting and living in the village with the increased prioritisation of pedestrians and traffic calming measures, thus creating a far more environmentally sustainable village. The combination of these improvements and the greenway will create a highly attractive visiting experience for walkers and cyclists alike. This scheme will provide the opportunity for all to really enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding area, and create opportunities for businesses in the village to cater for the anticipated increased
numbers visiting the village to enjoy all that this unique location has to offer. Thomas McEvoy, Director of Services for Louth County Council, “This appointment of BDP is a significant milestone in the project. The placemaking scheme will allow Louth County Council to build on the huge tourist potential of the county and in particular the village of Omeath, with its stunning natural beauty and key location on the Great Eastern Greenway. Incredible medal haul and four new Championship records for St Gerard’s AC The weather gods were very kind in Bush last weekend for the Louth Juvenile Outdoor Track & Field Championships, for what was a wonderful event in the glorious sunshine. St Gerards AC had its largest ever contingent of athletes competing at the Championships, with no fewer than 68 young hopefuls making the short trip. The haul of medals for the club’s athletes was breath-taking and a testament to the hard graft put in over recent months. The final tally for the Saints was 55 county medals - 23 Golds, 21 Silvers and 11 Bronze in addi-
tion to several ‘Personal Best’s performances (PBs). The icing on the cake to top off the club’s most successful County Championships in its 40-year history was four New Championship records after two days of fabulous athletics. The atmosphere around the Bush track was electric over the two days, with many expressing their joy in seeing the normal order of business return without restrictions. The sense of ‘team’ amongst the DSG athletes was palpable, as the children loudly and proudly supported their fellow club mates throughout. It
was an extraordinary club effort, with parents and coaches sharing in the highs and lows and the ups and downs. This Championships had it all sprint finishes in distance races, late surges, close shaves, photo finishes, numerous personal bests, championship records, proud as punch kids, even prouder parents and coaches. The club fielded a host of young athletes competing in their first ever county championships, with many just missing out on a podium position and showing great promise for the future. claimed Gold in the U9 300m with a determined sprint finish. Also competing in the Louth’s for the first time, Katelynn Woods had a great day at the office, picking up Gold for the 60m, the Turbo Javelin and the 500m in the U10 events. Calvin McCourt won the 60m, the Long Jump and Turbo events in the Boys U11 category, while Aaron Mulligan took home two Golds for the U14 80m and 200m. Grainne Moran retained her title in the Girls U16 100m while Tara O’Connor set a new record in the High Jump and took the top spot in the Hurdles.
Records number two and three went to Maebh O’Connor in the Long Jump and the Javelin to make it three Golds following her 200m sprint win. The fourth new county record went to Andrew Rosbotham for the Shot Put. The U17 Girls and Boys sprints were dominated by St Gerards, with Ciara Cunningham taking Gold and Rachel Culligan claiming Silver respectively in the 100m, the 200m and the 400m races. Meanwhile, Javier Lopez Navarro completed the double in the 100m and 200m events in the Boys’
events. Erin McGee picked up Gold for the U17 Girls Javelin, while the U16 Boys Shot Put was won by Anthony Urbanski in his first major competition. With 32 more visits to the podium for silver and bronze medals for the St Gerard’s athletes, last weekend will be remembered for a long time to come, and deservedly so. Huge credit and massive thanks to Louth Athletics, the County Board and all officials for a wonderful weekend of competition, which ran smoothly throughout in an incredibly positive atmosphere.

Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick, has asked for a reason why ambulance waiting times remain high. Speaking in the Dáil he used a recent example in Dundalk where a young footballer with a spinal injury had to wait almost two hours for an ambulance to arrive. “Every day the National Ambulance Service, NAS, deploys approximately 160 to 180 emergency ambulances, an average of 22 rapid response vehicles and in excess of 50 officer response vehicles operating in over 100 locations across the country. Lifethreatening calls are split into two categories, pnamely, delta, which are ,non-cardiac and nonrespiratory calls, and echo, which are life. threatening cardiac and
s
d -
Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick. respiratory calls. Echo and delta calls account for approximately 45% of all 112 and 999 calls. “Why is it taking so long for ambulances to arrive? In some cases, vehicles are taking between one and two hours to reach people. At a football match in Dundalk last weekend a
young footballer with a spinal injury had to wait for nearly two hours for an ambulance to arrive. I know this is the responsibility of the Minister for Health but nobody appears to be accountable for the process management side. There needs to be more accountability when it
comes to waiting times. Who is accountable?,” asked Deputy Fitzpatrick. In response to that query An Taoiseach Micheal Martin said he would speak to the National Ambulance Services to try and get answers for the Louth TD. “I will engage with the NAS on the case mentioned and alert it to the points Deputy Fitzpatrick has raised. Increased resources have been provided in this year’s Estimates to the NAS in respect of increasing capacity and so forth. The objective is to get the ambulances to people as quickly as possible but issues have been raised in the House of late and I will pursue those with the service,” stated An Taoiseach.

Louth students win at ‘Our S Ocean, Our Plan’ Competition

Students from 15 schools were honoured at an award ceremony yesterday celebrating the winners of this year’s GreenSchools Marine Spatial Planning Competition: Our Ocean, Our Plan. Nine students were awarded for their posters depicting their vision for the future of Ireland’s seas and eight school groups won for their 3D models showing how they envisage our seas’ future. Louth student student Louis Mac Dónaill from Ghaelscoil Dhún Dealgan, Dundalk, won third prize in the Infants Category for his poster and Scoil Bhride, Dunleer, Louth won third prize in the Senior Primary category for their 3D model but unfortunately could not attend the ceremony. In partnership with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, GreenSchools asked students to create posters or 3D models showing how they would like Ireland’s seas to be used in the future. The competition ties in with The National Marine Planning Framework, which will try to balance the different demands for using the sea including the need to protect the marine environment. The framework is about planning when and where human activities
take place at sea and ensuring these activities are as efficient and sustainable as possible. The competition was open to schools taking part in the Green-Schools Marine Environment theme, which encourages schools to discover how their work on the Green-Schools programme has positively, influenced people and their local environment while focusing on our oceans and seas. As part of their work on the Marine Environment theme schools are asked to investigate the sources of marine litter, take part in a #2minutebeachclean and carry out a Marine Litter Awareness survey. The results of this survey in 2022 have shown that schools made great strides in learning about marine issues, increasing their knowledge of reasons why marine litter is bad for the environment from 44% to 85% and strengthening their awareness of the ways in way climate change affects the marine environment from 35% to 74%. Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Peter Burke TD celebrated with schools at the award ceremony: “When you are introducing something new and innovative in Government, as we are with the Nation-

A K al Marine Planning Framework,t reaching certain sectors of thee community can have challeng-r es. Children can often be over-f looked, and this is something we became acutely aware of duringh the development of the marineo plan. I place great importance inp getting our message about ma-A rine planning and this new plan into schools. Students have led a the way in many environmental o initiatives and their generation a is the first to acknowledge and a take steps to combat the severity t of the climate crisis on a widespread basis. And so this ‘’Our Seas, Our Plan’’ competition ish a direct response. It is our wayw of asking young people to thinkc about what they want to happen“ in our seas into the future. I’mc delighted with the overall highc standard of the many entries received, and I think it is great toS see such high levels of interest inI our marine from so many of oura t young people” Green-Schools Manager Cathyn Baxter added: “It’s amazing to see the innovative and creative ideas that have been produced as part of this competition. Sean’s climb to pay for grand-uncle’s medical bills
A TEENAGER from Knockbridge has decided to climb Slieve Gullion later this summer in a bid to raise much-needed funds for his grand uncle. Sean Kieran, aged 15, has a target of €5,000 set on gofundme.com to help pay for his grand uncle Alan’s medical bills. Alan suffered a heart attack in the United States on March 14 last. He had a number of stents put in and will need to do cardiac therapy for some time. Shortly after he arrived home from hospital, he went back to work because he needs to pay the “overwhelming” medical bills that have started coming in. “Medical care in the States is very expensive. I can’t be with my uncle at the minute but I want to relieve some of the financial stresses he has Sean Kieran with grand-uncle Alan.
Fire destroys business premises in Rockmarshall
A devastating fire in Rockmarshall on the Dundalk-Carlingford Road was tackled by over thirty firefighters on Saturday morning as they tried to get the blaze under control. An overnight fire at Christoff-Custom Built Rooms, a bespoke kitchen manufacturing company destroyed the premises after the blaze quickly spread through the building. Fire engines from Dundalk, Monaghan, Ardee and Carlingford all attended the blaze after the alarm was raised on Saturday morning.

endured,” writes Sean on gofundme.com. “So, to help in my own way, I am going to climb Slieve Gullion mountain in south Armagh on Sunday 28th of August. “I am hoping you can all get behind me, all donations are greatly appreciated, thank you.” Sean’s mother, Aileen, told the Dundalk Leader that she is “very proud” of her son for taking on this fundraising challenge. “He’d be quite close to Alan. He visited him in New Jersey when he was younger and became very fond of him,” she said. “Whenever Alan would come home to Ireland Sean would want to see him and spend time with him. He’d be my mother’s brother. “It was a shock when we found out about the heart attack. My uncle
only had the basic medical care package so he had to pay the big money for his medical bills.” Aileen added: “Sean was worried about him that he had to go straight back to work afterwards and not take time to recover. “He wanted to take some of the financial pressure off Alan. So, he decided to set up a gofundme page and climb Slieve Gullion.” Sean, a second year De La Salle College student, is planning to climb Slieve Gullion with his dad, Liam. “He’s looking forward to it. The donations are coming in and he’s checking it every day. It would mean so much to him to reach his target,” said Aileen. https://www.gofundme. com/f/with-family-noonegets-left-behind.

Take control of soaring business costs Dundalk Leader 18th May 2022
12
“It may feel like business costs are rising uncontrollably. You may be looking at shrinking margins, supply chain issues and wondering how to adapt in this shifting and changing environment. Now is the time to talk to your Local Enterprise Office. Now is the time to introduce Lean into your business” explains Peter McGrane of Local Enterprise Office Louth. Local Enterprise Office Louth have a range of Lean supports to help you analyse
different parts of your business, identify and eliminate waste, improve processes and drive efficiency. Lean is a way of taking back control and running a more effective business. Lean is traditionally thought of as a process for manufacturing business. However, over recent years, Lean has been adapted for service industries, and small and medium businesses. And business owners are seeing superb results. Peter continues “We
know from research into companies that have already undertaken Lean programmes, that on average productivity increases of 20%, sales increase of 40%, quality improvement of 30% and or employment increases of 11% can be achieved. Introducing Lean into your business, using the supports we offer, can potentially drive similar results for you.” Talking about how it works, Peter explains “Lean is tailored to your business.

League One beckons for Super Stephen
Stephen McMullen (centre) signs his two year deal with Fleetwood Town with Jack Higgins (left) Fleetwood academy head Coach and Ben Ascroft (right) goalkeeper coach. Talented local goalkeeper Stephen McMullen will be playing his trade across the water next season after signing a twoyear deal with League Outfit Fleetwood Town. The Dundalk born seventeen-year-old joins Fleetwood from Warrenpoint Town where he has been since he was 14-year-old. Before that he played with Muirhevnamór based schoolboy club Woodview Celtic where he discovered his lovefor goalkeeping, having originally been a striker. According to his father Stevey who runs popular Park St. establishment Coffee Time the move has come at just the right time for his talented son. “The deal has been in the pipeline for a while and for us it was just a matter of deciding which one was right for Stephen. We had quite a few clubs looking for him to sign but having been to Fleetwood
to check out their set up we were left in no doubt that they are a very progressive club who have put time and money into their academy set up. They have a first-class academy over there and brilliant coaches and we feel that they are the ideal club to push Stephen forward and help him improve even more. “He absolutely loved his time up in Warrenpoint and from when he joined them at 14, he has been fast tracked into the first team up there making his debut for the senior side when he was just 16. We knew the Fleetwood scouts had been over to Warrenpoint to see him play a few times, so it wasn’t that surprising when they offered him the two-year deal. Stephen has been away at a few camps for both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and he enjoyed been away immensely,
so he is very excited to be hitting the road and he is very excited for this next chapter in his career,” explained Stevey. “I can remember back in his Woodview Celtic days he was originally playing outfield, but his team were short a goalkeeper for one match. The late great Kevin McGee was the team manager, and he was looking around for somebody to put in goal when I said ‘Put Stephen in, he won’t let you down’. Stephen had an amazing game in goals that night and after the match I can still remember Kevin saying to him ‘You’ll never take that number 1 jersey off again. You’re a goalkeeper now son’. He’s gone from strength to strength since those early days and we’d like to thank all the coaches and managers who have helped him get to where is today,” concluded Stevey.

DkIT Student excels in official Chinese language test A Digital Marketing and Public Relations student at DkIT has achieved an outstanding result in the official international Chinese Language Learning Test, after discovering an unexpected interest for the language. Eleanor Mc Guinness achieved a fantastic result in an intermediate level of the official international Chinese language test, known as the HSK exam. Eleanor started learning Mandarin Chinese in her first year at DkIT and continued throughout her degree, achieving a phenomenal 93% in the reading, and listening section of the exam. Eleanor McGuinness, DkIT Student Said ‘I decided to try out a Chinese class in college and was instantly grabbed by it. I began watching Chinese TV shows, taking classes on chinesehomework.ie and writing to a Chinese pen pal regularly. It’s a fascinating language and I wish students were more receptive to it. It’s one of the biggest languages in
Chinese Language Students Rebecca Cole Barbora Matusinska and Adela Muckova. the world, yet so many people here turn a blind eye to it’ Congratulating Eleanor on her success, John Sisk Lecturer in Marketing and Programme Director for Marketing studies at DkIT, added that he would love to see all students studying Marketing and Public Relations at the Institute take the opportunity to learn a language, whether it is Chinese or one of the others on offer. Learning a new language opens up a whole new world of opportunities for your career or from a travel point of view.
Mandarin has been offered as an elective module in the DkIT Business school for nearly 10 years now, along with French, Spanish, and German languages. It is designed for absolute beginners; no prior experience is required. The course is not only focused on the Chinese language but also on Chinese Culture. The number of students who are taking Chinese electives is small but steady. It is understandable that most students would prefer the European languages to stay in their comfort zone. However, the small
class size provides a safe and comfortable language learning environment, which enables the students to interact more and progress well. The students in this course are introduced to working with native Chinese speakers for cultural projects, and to improve their listening and speaking skills. The students also have the opportunity to study in China for weeks or complete a course on scholarship. For more information check out https://www. dkit.ie.

Bike Station Summer Cycling League
Ruaidhrí Stewart leads the bunch around the roundabout.
Thursday last saw the Bike Station Summer Cycling League revert back to its traditional slot after 2 seasons of being interrupted by the Covid pandemic. Cuchulainn’s league committee worked hard to map out a 15 round league, with a variety of fast and hilly challenging courses. Round 1 was definitely challenging on the looped Sportsman course. Eight km in length 4 of which are very fast downhill, which in turn leads to a very tough 4km uphill. It was the young guns who shone on the night, with under-
age rider James Mullen of Navan Road Club taking an impressive solo win. James was in the first group and rode away from his compatriots and managed to hold off everyone coming behind. Second place went to Conor Murphy, whom started in group 3, again rode away from his fellow group members and through the remnants of groups 1 and 2 to take second. Chasing the final podium spot was a group of 3 riders whom had escaped from the last bunch on the road. Liam Dolan won the sprint for third, ahead of UCD’s
Aimhirghin O`Brannagain. The final man in the group was defending league champion James McEneaney of Moynalty Cycling Club in 5th. An impressive performance on the night was put in by some of the other underage rides like the club’s Calum McCaffrey and Rhiannon Dolan. It was their first time racing in the senior league & were by no means outclassed. Next week round 2 the racing is help on the Ardee link road from Dorians Pub

sic to intimately and poignantly explore the struggles of Irish men and women caught in abusive purgatories, made all the more perilous by COVID-19 restrictions in an inefficient and unsympathetic system. Each performance will be followed by a post-show discussion with the director, cast, and a representative from Women’s Aid and Treoir. Suitable for ages 15+ Tickets are €16 / €14 + €1.50 booking fee per ticket and can be purchased from An Táin Arts Centre’s Box Office on Crowe Street, over the phone on 042 9332332 or online at www.antain.ie
