WuXi turbine plan winds up residents By Tamara O’Connell A RESIDENT from Haggardstown has said there is “a lot of concern amongst residents” about WuXi Biologics’ proposal to build a bigger wind turbine than the one at DkIT. The Chairperson of Haggardstown Tidy Towns’ Committee Shane McGuinness told the Dundalk Leader that he has been “shouting from the rooftops asking the council to look at Haggardstown”. “The wind turbine has stirred people up but I have concerns about the number of new houses being built in the area,” said Shane. “I would like Louth County Council to pay more atten-

tion to the area. We are also calling for a public meeting in the next two weeks for the people of Haggardstown and Blackrock. “We need to discuss the issues we are facing. There seems to be a lack of political will to talk about our area.” He added: “There are no councillors living out here. We are planning to put together a group to focus on the future of our community in Blackrock and Haggardstown. “The council needs to come out and talk to us because we have problems. We don’t have a bus that comes through Haggardstown; some areas have no footpaths and schools Susan McGeough in action at the Geraldines Family Fun Day last weekend. Pic are packed to capacity. WuXi turbine plan winds up residents Dundalk Leader 18th October 2023

From Page 1 “We are shouting stop and no-one is listening to us. We’ve had enough and need to look at putting together a lobby group.” Wu Xi is seeking permission to build a 125 metre wind turbine in between the townlands of Heynestown and Haggardstown at a proposed site in Wu Xi at A91 X56F. The proposed turbine will be taller than the Dublin spire, 20m higher, and three times more powerful than the DkIT wind turbine. Critics of the proposal claim it would also be within 500m of Mullagharlin Road, Crumlin and Brookfield residences. Critics add that it would also cause shadow flicker and noise nuisance for many residences around the perimeter of Wu Xi. If built, the WuXi turbine would impact natural species of birds and bats in our area. Critics also have concerns around the new turbine posing a health and

safety risk to the local community, school pupils and visitors to local GAA grounds. Those lobbying against WuXi’s wind turbine proposal claim it could limit perspective buyers into the parish, leading to decreased property values in the area. Locals who have developed a problem with gambling can now avail of free counselling provided by Dundalk service Turas. Turas Dundalk launched the free one-to-one gambling service in Creative Spark on Clanbrassil Street on Tuesday, October 17 at 11am. According to Turas Dundalk manager Nicki Jordan, problem gambling is the uncontrollable urge to keep gambling, despite the toll it takes on your life. “It’s estimated that 3 per cent of the total population has a problem with gambling. It’s a hidden addiction,” she said. “It’s very subtle and people often only look for help when they are in the depths of despair. It’s very easy to hide it. Some of the signs include obsessing about matches, lying, making excuses, and withdrawing from life.” Nicki added: “If you have a problem with gambling, you can call Turas Dundalk or come in and we will give you free, one-to-one support. “Problem gambling can take away your peace of mind and lower your self-esteem. It can also affect relationships and cause anxiety and stress both at home and in the work place. “We are trying to raise awareness that help is available so you can move on with your life.” Call Turas Dundalk today to receive help 0429338221. residents of Brookfield, Marlbog Road expresses their “strong objection” to the erection of a wind turbine at the Mullagharlin site of WuXi Biologics. The submission states that the development would have “a substantial negative effect” on local residents, particularly regarding noise and visual impact but also flicker and possible electromagnetic impacts. The submission adds that permission for the turbine should be refused, as there are 27 residences within a 500m limit of the

proposed turbine. “The greatest impact will be on those closest to the turbine, but it’s impact will also be felt in the wider Haggardstown/Blackrock parish much of which is within 3km of the turbine including a primary school, GAA club and nursing home.” Residents and members of the public who would like to lodge a submission in relation to the proposed WuXi wind turbine can do so by Thursday, 19 October. It costs €20 to lodge a submission with Louth County Council via

www.louthcoco.ie or drop a written submission into Louth County Council offices. A decision is due from Louth County Council about the proposed WuXi wind turbine by 9 November. Heynestown Cross resident Alan Watters told the Dundalk Leader that a meeting was held by WuXi about the proposed turbine on Wednesday, October 11. “Twenty people were given packages and invited to attend the meeting. A few more people found out about it so there were around 35 or 40 residents in attendance,” said Alan. “If this turbine gets built it would be absolutely massive. People should Google buildings of 125m to get an idea of how big this thing would be. “Haggardstown is now classed ass an urban area as far as I know. What does this mean in terms of the development plan in Louth?” Alan added: “We

have nothing like that in Ireland. I was disgusted so few people were informed about the public meeting. “I’m very unhappy with the communication by WuXi. The company only contacted a small minority of people about the meeting. “This proposed development is off the scale. It’s massive. What other urban area has a wind turbine of this magnitude?” According to spokesperson for WuXi Biologics, the Dundalk site uses four megawatts of power when the plant is at full capacity. “WuXi Biologics is hoping to generate three megawatts of power from the proposed wind turbine and one megawatt of power from solar energy from panels on the rooftop,” he said. “WuXi Biologics are trying to reduce their carbon footprint just like many other companies. The focus is not on how much money the company will save or on profits.”

Government must ensure strike action doesn’t escalate —Ó Murchú

The government needs to urCllr Pearse McGeough, Cllr Kevin Meenan and Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú, with Irish Wheelchair Association staff and gently intervene to ensure that the strike by section 39 and section 56 service users during a visit to the IWA Centre at the Long Walk earlier this year. workers, who provide services to vulnerable people including those with disabilities, does not escalate, Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú. He made the comments in the Dáil last week during statements on the strike action, which is due to get underway at section 39 and 56 service providers, including at the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) centre in Dundalk on Tuesday. Forsa, the IMNO and SIPTU, the trade unions representing the workers at these organisations, have said that they want pay parity with colleagues who work directly for the HSE, as their organisations provide nearly 65% of the disability services in the State. The strike action, which has been slated to start on Tuesday, will, the unions say, be indefinite. Speaking in Leinster House, the Sinn Féin TD said: ‘We have dealt with a budget that did not put anything aside to deal with this issue. We talk about section 39 and section 56 workers. ‘The Irish Wheelchair Association does huge, visible work in my constituency and many people avail of their service in the town of Dundalk. ‘Many of these organisations were set up because the State failed to deliver certain services and then service level agreements or whatever were entered into. It makes

no sense that the likes of the HSE is poaching people on the basis of higher pay. ‘In a cost-of-living crisis you cannot blame people for taking jobs but we have now left people with no choice but to strike. I know it will be very difficult for these people. ‘The reason they have not shouted quicker or louder is because these are people who really care about the vital work they do whether it is in homeless services, disability services or for the most vulnerable. ‘The Minister of State spoke about engagement with the Department of Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform. That has to be real. ‘I am always afraid when I hear about the Department of Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform; that is where issues sometimes go to die and that cannot be the case here. ‘They are looking after the people who need those added resources and we need to look after them. We cannot go through this any longer’. He said Ministers Roderic O’Gorman and Anne Rabbitte ‘need to move from talk of a meaningful offer to the unions to actually providing an offer in order to avert this strike action and all the problems that comes with it’.

Local Masters athlete Geraldine Finegan added to her magnificent Masters athletics medal haul last week when she picked up no less than eight medals at the European Masters Athletics in Pescara, Italy. Masters Athletics is a class of the sport of athletics for athletes over 35 years of age. Competitors are bracketed into five year age groups. Geraldine competes in the 55-60 age bracket. The evergreen Church Street native competed in eight events over 14 gruelling days and took home one gold (Heptathlon), three bronze (Short hurdles, Long Hurdles and Mixed 4 x 400) as well as four silver (Pole Vault, High Jump, Women’s 4 x 400m and Javelin). That haul brings the North East Runner member’s overall tally to 79 medals, which is more than any other Masters athlete in the country. Geraldine now has her sights set on reaching 100 Masters medals and has no plans of stopping anytime soon. Indeed, next May she will line out for Ireland at the World Relay Championships in the Bahamas next May. The World Relay Championships are expected to attract more than 1600 elite athletes to the country as a key-qualifying event for the 2024 Olympic Sumer Games in France. The Championships will also host a Masters competition and Geraldine is one of four athletes across Ireland who have been chosen to compete on the world stage in the 4 x 400m

Geraldine won eight medals at the European Masters.

mixed relay. A hugely exciting prospect for Geraldine who can still remember where it all began 45 years ago when she walked into Mickey Rogers Dundalk Barbell and Weight Lifting Club on Linenhall St.. According to Geraldine, she knew she was fast but she also knew she needed to get stronger so decided to ask Mickey if she could join. “I was only a small kid back then and I can remember knocking on the door of this gym

where it was unheard of for women to ever be seen, nevermind become a member. Mickey Rogers was the owner and he asked me if my mother knew where I was. I told him that she did and that I wanted to lift weights as I wanted to get stronger and faster. I had to fight to get in but Mickey did let me and it was very good for me. The fact I got stronger and fitter at that time is probably why I am still able to compete in international competition. I train a lot of talented young-

sters and my message to them is always this: You don’t need to be the fastest but you need to be the fittest. Athletics is hard but if you are dedicated it can be so rewarding. “I absolutely love the thrill of competing on the international stage and I have no intention of hanging up my running spikes anytime soon. As I said already I have 79 international masters medals and it’s a big goal of mine to reach the 100 mark,” concluded Geraldine.

Connect Credit Union celebrates Expansion of Free Travel Pass International Credit Union Day to people who are medically certified as unable to drive will make a difference—McGreehan

Connect Credit Union will be joining credit union members around the world to celebrate International Credit Union Day on Thursday 19th October 2023 marking the 75th anniversary of ICU Day. At Connect Credit Union it is a time to celebrate the volunteers and staff members who continue to operate with the same ethos established by those courageous volunteers back in 1958 when the first Irish Credit Union was set up. The movement has seen enormous changes and advances over the past 65 years. With new services and technology to rival the pillar banks, Connect Credit Union’s mortgage and current account offerings are vital for the towns and small villages of Louth now more than ever. Norman McDonnell, CEO of Connect Credit Union said: “Our members and community are our backbone, and we are so proud here at Connect Credit Union of the part we play in sustaining that community. We

Connect Credit Union staff celebrate International Credit Union Day. genuinely care about our members and put them at the heart of everything we do. Our goal is to remain a cornerstone of our community by continuing to go above and beyond for our members”. “With the cost-ofliving crisis becoming more and more prevalent, credit unions remain vital and accessible providers of affordable financial services across the country. Connect Credit Union have seen their online offering grow over the past two years, with the introduction of the CU

mobile App, online loan applications, remote member registration, online payment options and a full online banking service. In the past year, they have introduced two three-year rate guaranteed Mortgage loans, as well as some of the lowest Agri and business loan rates in the county. Not to forget, in January of 2021 Connect CU launched their current account offering competing against pillar banks in attracting switchers and those members who want to chose lower banking costs whilst availing of

the community bank values offered by Connect Credit Union. Continuing the founding ethos of credit unions, Connect Credit Union operates a as non-profit organisation, allowing credit unions the ability to provide new services to their members without the profit goals of shareholders overshadowing decisions. The wider community also benefits through Connect Credit Unions social dividend fund, where clubs, societies, tidy towns groups and shows receive donations to organise and run fundraisers or events.

Local Fianna Fáil Senator, Erin McGreehan, has welcomed the expansion of the Department of Social Protection’s Free Travel Pass to cover people who are medically certified as unable to drive under Budget 2024. Senator McGreehan has engaged continuously with Epilepsy Ireland and campaigned for the expansion of the Free Travel Pass in recent years in Seanad Éireann. The expansion of the Free Travel Pass to cover those who are medically certified as unable to drive will make a difference to thousands of people, for example those with Epilepsy, who have lost their license due to their condition.

Senator Erin McGreehan.

Senator McGreehan said: “The expansion of the Free Travel Pass to cover people who are medically certified as unable to drive is a hugely positive move by the Department that will make a tangible difference to the lives of thou-

sands of people. I have campaigned for the expansion of the Pass for some time now, to help those with medical conditions such as epilepsy who can lose their license, leading to issues with attending work or education due to not being able

to afford the cost of travel. The expansion of the Pass will help to empower these people to allow them to continue their normal day to day life after being medically certified as unable to drive.”

Fitzpatrick and regional group colleagues cautiously welcome Budget 24

Deputy Fitzpatrick and the independent Regional Group members recognise that the Government has delivered on some of their Budget 2024 recommendations, such as a new interest loan scheme for retrofitting homes along with grants, extending child benefit to 18-year-olds still in full-time education, changes to the Employment Investment Incentive Scheme and a commitment to support local employment and enterprises by simplifying processes for tax relief schemes. In a recent prebudget meeting with the Minister for Finance, Michael McGrath TD, and the Minister for Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery & Reform, Paschal Donohoe TD, to discuss budget 2024. Deputy Fitzpatrick, alongside the regional group members called for a thorough review of tax credits and the social welfare system to ensure that employment is financially rewarding. They also emphasised the need to revise the medical card income

guidelines to broaden access to healthcare and provide real housing solutions. “At present, the medical card income guidelines have been unchanged since 2005. This needs to be updated immediately considering the rising cost of living challenges. I am also pushing for the extension of the medical card duration to 5 years for individuals with long-term or permanent disabilities from the current 2-year timeframe”, affirms Deputy Fitzpatrick. “The once-off €400 payment for people with disabilities is welcome but it is not the longterm answer towards effectively pulling people out of the poverty trap”, says Deputy Fitzpatrick. As well as this, in the recent prebudget meeting, Deputy Fitzpatrick and his colleagues highlighted the need to introduce a cost of disability payment to ensure the same standard of living for people with disabilities as nondisabled people. Deputy

Fitzpatrick strongly stresses that “Disabilities are not temporary, and neither should the support provided”. Additionally, “Foster children will get Group B tax relief on inheritance. A once-off double payment of the Foster Care allowance is an increase of the statutory care rate of €75, but again this does not go far enough as recommended in the Regional Group prebudget submission 2024”, states Deputy Fitzpatrick. Deputy Fitzpatrick, alongside the Regional group members, had called for a fundamental shift in the approach to Budget 2024, emphasising an integrated strategy with clear goals, meticulous execution, and robust accountability measures. The independent TDs called for the expansion of direct State support and tax measures to alleviate the burdens of the rising cost of living on working families and individuals. “This week, Ministers McGrath and Donohue announced some wel-

Garda age limit to increase from 35 to 50

The Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee TD, has announced that the age limit for joining An Garda Síochána is to increase from 35 to 50. The Minister was speaking at the attestation of 126 members of An Garda Síochána at the Garda College, Templemore, today. Minister McEntee said: “Commissioner Harris and I both believe that the age should be changed in advance of the next Garda recruitment campaign to give as many people as possible the opportunity to apply to An Garda Síochána. “The entry age limit of 35 has been in place since 2004, when it was increased from 26. “A new age limit of 50 is being chosen to widen the opportunity to join An Garda Síochána but to also ensure there is an appropriate period of time between someone potentially

entering at 50 and retiring ten years later. “As part of the budget package for An Garda Síochána announced earlier this week, we have also provided a 66 percent increase in the Garda training allowance to €305.” The retirement age is currently set at 60, but Minister McEntee has also held discussions with Minister for Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe on this issue. The change to the entry age can only be made by way of regulation following approval by the Cabinet, and Minister McEntee will bring proposals to Government shortly. The announcement comes at a time when Garda recruitment is accelerating following a Covid enforced pause, during which the Garda College in Templemore was closed.

Woodview Celtic’s glorious treble dedicated to ‘Mr Woodview’ Kevin McGee

Woodview Celtic Under 12’s completed the treble last week as they wrapped up a perfect campaign by beating Ardee Celtic 6-3 to add the Premier Division to the League Cup and Challenge Cup they had won earlier in the season. The fourteen dedicated players have been playing with each other since they four years old and according to manager Eamonn O’Hagan their potential was spotted very early on by founder of the club Kevin McGee who passed away in 2017. Kevin who was known as ‘Mr Woodview’ was hugely impressed with the youngsters when they arrived at the club in 2016. So much so he approached Eamonn and made him make a promise to him.

“Kevin called down to me and told me about this great group of kids who were showing potential even as four and five year olds and he made me promise that I’d stick with them and help them fulfil that potential. I have been with them since they first came into the club and they have always been a very special group and way advanced for their age. This season they have been absolutely fantastic and deservedly won the treble. We don’t have our own ground and we play out of Muirhevnamór but the boys are so dedicated that if I told them to meet me for training up in the Cooley mountains they’d be there with no questions asked. “We’ve brought them to the Blackpool Cup and a tourna-

ment in Newry where they were beaten in the final by Linfield who are obviously a lot bigger club than us. They’ve done everything asked of them and they are so committed with regards to their fitness and diet. The most important thing for us is to see them enjoying themselves and they have formed a real bond having played together for seven or eight years now. They are a band of brothers and they are creating lasting memories which they will keep for life. “We dedicate all our success this season to Kevin McGee who was the backbone of this club and who was known as Mr Woodview. He passed away almost six years ago and is sorely missed. We have his initials on the sleeve of our jersey as well

as Lee Myles who tragically passed away twenty years ago when a goalpost fell on him. This season is dedicated to him also,” stated Eamonn. “I’d also like to thank all the parents who have brought the kids here there and everywhere and who have been great supporters of the boys and the club. We will now look forward to the National Cup where we hope to have a decent run and we will continue working hard and having fun. We train 52 weeks of the year and we all love it. Myself and my fellow coaches Shane Grimes and Damien Myles are very proud of the boys and we congratulate each and every one of them,” Woodview U-12s were unstoppable this season under manager, Eamonn O’Hagan. concluded Eamonn.

North-East Runners shine in back-to-back cross-country races The North East Runners (NER) recently displayed their prowess in cross country running at the Louth Novice Cross Country Championship held at Darver. The first race of the day was the Novice Women’s race over 3km, which saw impressive performances from the NER Ladies team with Vanessa Schmid emerging as the standout athlete in her debut to cross country running. Schmid’s victory was characterized by a strong pace from the gun which left competitors from

Drogheda, Ardee, and indeed - clubmates, struggling to keep up. The team continued to dominate the Novice race, with Kelly Ann Gladysz securing 2nd position, followed by Shauna Hogan in 3rd and Caoimhe Lynch in 4th in what was a closely contested race. These strong finishes ensured the NER ladies team took home the team title. Other notable performances from NER included Patricia Mullholland in 10th place, Carole O’Neill in 21st place, Patricia Nevin in 22nd place, Han-

nah Mullholland in 23rd place, and Helena Mullins in 28th place. Following the women’s event, it was time for the Novice Men’s race, covering a distance of 6km. Peter Mc Guinness led the NER charge in a strong field of competitors. Peter Mc Guinness’s impressive fourth-place finish was complemented by Oisin Hughes in 8th place, Mark O’Connor in 10th place, and Ciaran Culligan in 11th place, resulting in a team total of 33 points which was enough for NER to secure

the silver medal in the team competition. Other NER athletes who contributed to the team’s performance included John Tumilty (16th), Patrick Mc Sorley (19th), Patrick Kierens (20th), Ian Cosgrove (22nd), Pat McElarney (23rd), and Seamie Falls (31st). Just one week later, on Sunday, October 9th, the Intermediate Cross Country Championship took place in Bellurgan Park. This race presented a tougher challenge on proper cross-country terrain, with the women cov-

ering a distance of 4km and the men tackling an 8km course. Once again, NER athletes showcased their strength, with Vanessa Schmid and David Redmond both securing victories in their respective races. Vanessa Schmid’s remarkable win marked her second Louth cross country title in just a week. In the women’s race, Schmid led the way, followed closely by her teammates Kelly Ann Gladysz in 4th place, Chloe Lynch in 5th, and Claire

Smyth in 6th place. They were backed up by Anita Bolton, Patricia Nevin and Helena Mullins. In the men’s race, David Redmond’s exceptional performance saw him come from behind to overtake Colin Leonard’s blistering opening pace to emerge victorious in the final lap of the 8km race. His teammate Garry Mulligan secured 4th place, while Peter Mc Guinness and Oisin Hughes finished in 5th and 6th place, respectively. Other notable NER performances in the men’s

race included John Tumilty (9th), Stephen Mullholland (12th), Patrick Kieren (13th), Gareth Mc Kevitt (22nd), and Colm Hearty (24th). This was a memorable day at Bellurgan Par for the North East Runners as they secured both the men’s and women’s Intermediate titles. If you would like to improve your fitness or best your next 5km simply drop us a message on our Facebook/Instagram ‘North East Runner’s Dundalk’ for training sessions and coaching tips.

Dundalk Credit Union – A Celebration Tributes paid to of Members Helping Members this International Credit Union Day gifted musician after fatal road crash Dundalk Leader 18th October 2023

Tributes have been paid to Chris Bradley who was killed after a fatal road traffic collision on the M1 Northbound between junctions 12 and 14 at Mooremont, Co. Louth in the early hours of last Saturday morning. Mr Bradley was a married father of two from Desertmartin, Co. Derry and he was returning home from a gig with his fellow band members Bob Hunt and Jerome McBride. Chris was a very well-respected drummer and was a very popular musician on the Irish country music circuit. The trio had been playing with popular country and western singer Declan Nerney on Friday evening in Naas. Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene just after 2am where a collision had occurred between a tractor and the car the trio of musicians were travelling in. Mr Bradley, who was a passenger in the car, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Declan Nerney paid tribute to Chris on social media on Saturday while also sending his thoughts to his family.

The late Chris Bradley. “It is with great sadness that I relay the news that our good friend and colleague Chris Bradley passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning 14th October in a tragic car accident in Co Louth. “Chris was a magnificent drummer and above all that an even better colleague and friend. He was the life and soul of the party, always lit up a room with his great sense of humour and a powerful legion of fans. While

we are all so devastated by this sad news we must keep his heartbroken wife Gabrielle, two children - Darcey and Brogan, Parents, siblings and extended family members in our thoughts and prayers. “May god give them the strength to get them through the dark days ahead. We must also keep our other two band members Bob and Jerome who were also involved in this horrific accident in our thoughts and prayers and wish them a speedy recovery. I would like to thank you all for your kind messages and support at this very dark time,” stated Declan. Mr Bradley’s death is the 151st fatality on Irish roads this year which is up from 116 last year. Any road users who were travelling on the M1 between junctions 12 and 14 during the hours of 1:30am and 2:10am are asked to contact Gardaí at Drogheda Street Garda Station on 0419874200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800666111 or any Garda station.

Family Notices in memoriam

CLARKE Karen 3rd ANNIVERSARY In loving memory of Karen Clarke, late of Mullach Alainn, Newry who died 23rd October 2020. God looked around His garden, And saw an empty space, He then looked down upon earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you, And lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. God knew you were in pain, And a cure was not to be, So he closed your weary eyelids, And whispered come to me. With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you slip away, Although we loved you dearly, We knew you could not stay. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. —Always loved and missed Mam, Dad and family. XXX.

NOVENA

miracle prayer

Novena to THE Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours This time, I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes, it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (Never known to fail). M.T.

MIRACULOUS PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit, you who makes me see everything and shows me the way to reach my ideal, you who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget all the wrong that is done to me and you who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank you for everything, and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones… in your perpetual glory. Amen. To that end, and submitting to God’s holy will, I ask from you… (mention your favor). You must pray this prayer 3 consecutive days. After the 3rd day your wish shall be granted no matter how difficult It may be. Promise to publish the dialogue as your favour has been granted. H.C. GRAY 57th Anniversary In memory of my sister Anne, late of O’Hanlon Park, Dundalk. We cannot bring the old days back, When we were all together, The family chain is broken now, But memories live forever. Garda Youth Reach soccer blitz

Dundalk Leader 18th October 2023

Hill Street, Dublin Rd., Dundalk.

042 9331515/086 2559201

Garda Josh Wilson, Garda Niall Higgins, Charlie Armstrong, Superintendent, Dundalk Garda Station, JLO, Paul Burke, Liam Burns, Dundalk FC and Paul Smith, FAI. The annual Youth Reach soccer blitz was held recently at the DkIT indoor sports venue in Dundalk, with six teams entered this year. The teams were Youth Reach Dundalk; The Magnate Training Centre Dundalk; Youth Reach Laytown; Youth Reach Ardee; Navan Youth Reach 1 and Navan Youth Reach 2. The blitz has become the annual flagship event of a committee made up of Dundalk Garda Station, Dundalk FC, FAI, and Louth County Council.

Juvenile Liaison Officer for Dundalk Garda station, Gda. Paul Burke, who was a key organiser of the event, said: ‘Huge credit must go to all the Youth Reach organisations, the teenagers who attended and all the staff who came with them’. One of the Youth Reach centre managers said: ‘Thanks very much for inviting our Youthreach to this year’s soccer tournament. ‘It was a fantastic event, well run and our student really enjoyed the experience. ‘I thought the event worked

well in the DKIT venue and the communication from officials on the day was very good. ‘It wasn’t easy with the weather conditions but the change of venue last minute meant that the event could go ahead’. The event is usually run on the main pitch in Oriel Park but with the storm warning it was decided to go indoor to DKIT, which proved a big success and really added to day. A word of thanks must also go to DKIT of the use of their facilities.
