Louth County Councillors walked out en masse during Monday’s monthly council meeting with Drogheda councillor Joanna Byrne accusing Chief Executive Joan Martin of lying and undermining her own staff in overturning a public commitment they gave to provide a Rainbow crossing. Louth Councillor Kevin Meenan proposed a walk-out of the monthly council meeting following a disagreement over the rainbow stripes at pedestrian crossings and his fellow councillors agreed as the meeting was brought to an abrubt halt. Cllr Meenan said that he proposed the walk-out after Cllr Joanna Byrne had a disagreement with Louth County Manager Joan Martin. “No-one was talking anymore. Councillors were just talking amongst themselves so I said we should stop,” said Cllr Meenan. “I said we shouldn’t be here and some other councillors followed suit. We can’t operate without the County Manager. TERRIBLE WEATHER FOR DUCKS—Penny Hynes from Garrybawn, Dundalk, having fun in Continued on Page 2 the sun at Market Square.

was surreal. It was just ridiculous. “From our point of view, she had rendered the meeting ineffective so we couldn’t continue with the meeting. “The general consensus is that there was no other option open to us other than that.”
Louth Councillor Maria Doyle said that she put in a notice of motion for Dundalk to have a crossing in celebration of Pride last April. “The answer I got was that there were legal issues due to road safety and that we couldn’t have it,” she said. “There was no collaboration from my point of view. Councillor Joanna Byrne had put in a similar request in Drogheda and got a similar response. “I supported the walk out and I left the meeting. The issue of the crossings is almost like the straw that broke the camel’s back.” Cllr Doyle added: “I’d like better communication and better collaboration. Councillors are representing the public. “At the same time Councillor John Sheridan noted that the council has been very

helpful overall with the Pride Festival and it was very well organised. Meanwhile the councillor at the centre of the row, Joanna Byrne, described Joan Martin’s behaviour as ‘deplorable’. “Chief Executive, not only have you undermined your own staff in overturning a public commitment they gave to provide a Rainbow
crossing, you have also undermined your own word in providing the Rainbow letters instead, in turn undermining my word to the people of Drogheda and the LGBTQ Community which leads to undermining the working relationship between Council officials and Councillors.” Councillor Byrne emphasised the delay in responding to her queries

Whilst some disagreement followed between Chief Executive Joan Martin and Cllr Byrne, other Councillors rallied to support Cllr Byrne in her plight to get answers and explanations from the top table. Louth basked in glorious sunshine on Monday as the temperature hit 30 degrees Celsius in parts of the county. Clear blue skies greeted locals as they awoke from their slumbers on Monday morning and all throughout the day temperatures rose as many hit the beach to
ature on record for Ireland, being 0.3°C below the all-time record of 33.3°C observed at Kilkenny Castle on Sunday 26 June 1887; highest in the 21st century – beating Elphin, Co. Roscommon’s record of 32.3°C on Wednesday 19 July 2006;
enjoy the beautiful sunshine. The highest recorded temperature locally occurred at Clonkeen weather station which clocked a high of 31 degrees Celsius with the weather stations in Collon and Tallanstown also breaking the 30 degree mark. Monday saw multiple temperature records provisionally broken at various Met Éireann weather stations nationwide. Notably, the Phoenix Park in Dublin reached a number of milestones, by provisionally recording its highest shaded air temperature since data was first recorded here in the early 1800s, reach-
ing 33.0°C (12.8°C above its 1981-2010 long-term average of 20.2°C) on Monday 18th July 2022 around 2:40 pm. This observation passed initially checks by Met Éireann’s Observations Division. Verification continues however and if no other meteorological station returns a higher temperature in the coming days, this will potentially be: highest July temperature ever recorded – having achieved 0.7°C more than the previous record holder at Elphin, Co Roscommon which was set on Wednesday 19 July 2006; 2nd highest temper-
higher than any temperature of the 20th century, the previous maximum being 32.5°C at Boora, Co. Offaly on Tuesday 29 June 1976; and highest temperat ure ever recorded in Dublin.
To verify a new national temperature record, a number of steps will now be undertaken: a committee of experts has to examine the observation, the equipment, calibration and observation practices, how the temperature corresponds to surrounding stations and its own observational record. Over the course of the next few months, the potential new July record will pass through this process.
tive completely shut down, refusing to even acknowledge points and questions coming from all elected members, held her head down and stayed silent. A despaired Cllr Kevin Meenan asked the Chief Executive what the point was of Councillors remaining in the Chamber if she was unwilling to communicate with Councillors to which he received no response, leading to all Cllrs leaving the meeting. Speaking to media after the meeting Cllr Byrne explained that leaving had not been her intention but the actions of the CE left her with no other option. “Nobody likes to see a meeting disrupted in this way, I myself had further business to raise at later stages of the meeting but this is solely down to the actions of the CE. The CE blatantly refused to answer
my queries in relation to the Council’s reluctance to support the LGBTQ Community and her complete disregard and unwillingness to communicate caused this issue. When there is no transparency, there is no trust, and when there’s no trust there’s no basis for a working relationship. Every Cllr present walked out today in frustration, that to me sends a clear message that the Chief Executive has damaged any credibility she may have held. It also shows solidarity from all Councillors to support our LGBTQ Community which is the positive side of the news story!” When asked for a comment on the walkout the Dundalk Leader received the following reply from Louth County Council. “The response at the moment is as follows: ‘No comment at this time’.”

Don’t forget to give your Pet plenty of WAVES this Summer! That is the message being given by Veterinary Ireland to all pet owners during the summer months. “WAVES” explains Peter Bishton, Veterinary Ireland’s Deputy Chief Executive, “stands for WAter, VEntilation and Shade. These are the three things essential to all pets during the summer months, and Veterinary Ireland has come up with this short acronym to help pet owners keep their dog and cat family members safe and healthy throughout the summer”. “Having adequate drinking water available for your pet at all times is of prime importance,” explains Mr Bishton, “in order to ensure that your pet is adequately hydrated. Ensure that water bowls are kept topped up, and when out, have a separate water bottle available for your dog. A pop-up camping bowl is also useful to ensure that your dog can take in adequate water. Short drinks on a regular basis are better than one long drink, and make sure that the water is not too cold”.While most people would know that keeping a dog in the car during a hot spell is dangerous, it is equally important to ensure that any accommodation, such as a bedroom,
kitchen, or especially a glazed conservatory, is kept at a comfortable temperature for your dog or cat.“Ventilation is a major factor in keeping your dog or cat comfortable in summer, and provides not only a cooling breeze, but also assists the pet to breath and pant to cool down”. Unlike humans, dogs are unable to sweat through the skin, but cool down through panting. Panting is not as efficient as sweating and so dogs can find it difficult to cool down as quickly as humans when it is hot. Flat-faced breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs or Pekingese, are specifically at-risk during summer months as selective breeding has created respiratory problems in many of these breeds, making it harder for them to breathe normally, let alone be able to pant in hot weather.Providing a cool, shaded space for your pet to rest, either at home or when out, is essential. “Shade is critically important, as dogs and cats can also suffer from sunburn,” states Mr Bishton. “Ears, noses, paw pads, and areas where the fur is thinner, such as on the stomach, can all get burnt in the summer sun. While there are sun protection products available from your own vet, the best action is to create a shady spot for your companion animal. While it may be easier to create a shady
spot at home, either in the house or in the garden, if out with your dog find a cool spot under trees or bushes, or carry a light shawl with you, and create a shelter where your dog can rest and enjoy a drink of water”. For any aspect of care for your companion animal, at any time of year, your vet is the best person to contact with any questions, or to seek specific advice. Keep the veterinary practice’s number in your mobile and do not hesitate to call. “Don’t forget”, concludes Mr Bishton, “it is essential to provide plenty of fresh water, adequate ventilation and cool shade for your dog, whatever it is doing”.Be sure to give your pet dog or cat plenty of WAVES this summer! Veterinary Ireland is the representative body for veterinary practitioners in Ireland, and at European / EU Level through its membership of the Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations (FECAVA). With a membership of over 1,500 veterinary practitioners, working in over 700 veterinary practices, as well as for the State and Local Authorities, and in education, research and industry, Veterinary Ireland produces policies and guidelines, available at www.veterinaryireland.ie.
Give your pet plenty of Irish Water to begin major upgrade to the sewer network to WAVES this Summer! unlock growth and development Irish Water, working in partnership with Louth County Council, is progressing a major project to upgrade and improve the sewer network at St. Helena’s, Dundalk. The delivery of this important wastewater project will support social and economic growth, including planned housing development, and will significantly improve the capacity and operational performance of the existing sewers, benefitting local businesses and residents. It will also safeguard the environment by reducing the risk of sewer overflows into Dundalk Harbour. The project, which is due to begin in the coming weeks, will involve the construction of almost 1.2kms of new sewerage pipes and is part of a project to improve the capacity of the existing sewers in the area and also to enhance operational performance. These works will involve the installation of a new rising main, beginning at St. Helena’s Terrace pumping station to the junction of Coes Road and Point Road. The rising main at Quay St pumping station will also be replaced as part of the project. Commenting on the project, Padraig Hanly , Regional Delivery Lead at Irish Water said,
“Working with our colleagues in Louth County Council, we are delighted to announce the progression of this vital project for Dundalk. A sewer network that is fit for purpose is essential in order to support business and social development in the community. These works will support existing and future residential and commercial development while also improving the overall performance of the sewer network and will safeguard the local environment by reducing the risk of sewer flooding.”Padraig added “We understand that the works may cause some inconvenience to commuters and our crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption and complete the project as quickly as possible. On behalf of Irish Water, I would like and thank the people of Dundalk in advance for their support and co-operation.”
To minimise the impact on the local community, works will be delivered on a phased basis with areas of work limited to short sections.Where works are underway on the public road, traffic management will be in place in the form of a stop/go traffic light system, however, emergency traffic and access for local residents will be maintained at all times. The project, which is due to be completed in Q1 of 2023, is being delivered by GMC Utilities Group on behalf of Irish Water. Irish Water and Louth County Council regret any inconvenience that this essential project may cause. Our customer care helpline is open 24/7 on 1800 278 278 and customers can also contact us on Twitter @ IWCare with any queries. New Croí Cónaithe fund to help Aidan hands over cheque for almost €18,000 to NICU refurbish vacant properties Annaghminnon man Aidan Kerr brought his son Killian back to the NICU in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda armed with a cheque for almost €18,000. Twelve years ago Killian was born with problems in his lungs and according to Dad Aidan he and his wife Lynn remain eternally grateful for the care their son received in the NICU from dedicated staff. Just after Killian’s first birthday Aidan raised almost €5000 for the NICU to thank them for all they do for families all over the North East. In 2020 when Killian turned 10 Aidan decided to launch another fundraiser for the NICU starting off with head shave which took place in Smyth’s pub in Tallanstown. Between the headshave and sponsor cards and the generosity of people around Co. Louth, Aidan managed to raise a massive €17,866.80 for the
Christine Byrne (Clinical Manager), Lynn Kerr, Grainne Milne (Director of Midwifery), Karen Dunne (Clerical Officer), Oisin and Killian Kerr, Aidan Kerr and Caroline McCaul (Clinical Manager of NICU). NICU which he delivered in person alongside his wife and two sons last week. According to Aidan it was an emotional return to the NICU for both he and his family. “They were delighted to receive the cheque and we were delighted to be able to give it to them,” stated Aidan. “The nurses brought Killian to a room where the incubators were and explained to him how nurses would have looked after him back in 2010 and how long he was sick for. It was a real eye opener for Kil-
lian and it gave him an idea of how well lookd after he was. My family will forever be grateful for the great work the doctors and nurses in the NICU do and the money we gave will hopefully help some other family in the future who are unfortunate enough to have a child sent there. “When we announced the fundraiser and put up the link for donations we were inundated with support and I would like to thank everybody who supported our fundraiser and donated. We have received support from all over the place and
we are very grateful. I’d especialy like to thank Skinny and Caroline in Smyths Bar who hosted the fundraiser and who were very good to us on the night. “There were sponsorship cards and buckets going around on the night and thanks to everybody’s generosity we managed to raise almost €18,000 stated Aidan. I know from first hand experience how much brilliant work they do in the NICU in Drogheda and it’s great to be able to give something back,” he added.
A new Government fund called Croí Cónaithe will support bringing vacant and underused buildings in Louth and East Meath towns and villages back into use, a Fine Gael TD has said. Deputy Fergus O’Dowd said, “The new €50 million Croí Cónaithe Towns Fund was announced formally today by the government. This fund will be crucial to bringing vacant and underused buildings in towns and villages in the North East back into residential use. “We have areas experiencing quite serious vacancy and dereliction in parts of Louth and East Meath and we want to breathe new life into these communities and ensure they are better places in which to live, to work and to raise families. “The Scheme is set to benefit those who wish to turn a formerly vacant house or building into their principal
Fergus O’Dowd, TD. private residence and become part of the community in the area. “The Fund will be delivered through both Louth and Meath County Councils who will provide a grant to support the refurbishment of vacant properties, with priority given to applications in areas where the level of vacancy or dereliction is high. “A grant of up to €30,000 will be available for the refurbish-
ment of vacant properties for occupation as a principal private residence, including the conversion of a property which has not been used as a home before now. “Where a property is derelict, a maximum top-up grant amount of up to €20,000 will be available, bringing the total grant available for a derelict property up to a maximum of €50,000. This can also be combined with the SEAI Better Energy Home Scheme that covers works of up to €26,750. “It is intended that the Crói Cónaithe Fund will apply in all towns with a population of over 400 people, and also to some smaller villages, which may not be defined towns or villages for the purposes of the CSO Census mapping but with sufficient provision of services and amenities.” Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Peter Burke, added, “Today’s new
Dundalk Gaels Cúl Camp
fund is a part of a suite of measures undertaken by the government to tackle vacancy. It will be complemented by the upcoming Vacant Property Tax to help bring more properties back into use across the country.” This Scheme is part of the Government’s Our Rural Future policy and the recently published Town Centre First policy, which aims to tackle vacancy and dereliction and breathe new life into our town centres. It also delivers on the ambition set out in Pathway 4 of Housing for All which aims to address vacancy and make efficient use of existing housing stock. The application form, eligibility criteria and associated FAQs as published will provide additional information to people who would like to apply for the grant. Further information will be available from the Vacant Homes Officer in each local authority.

will get us some time until this fixes but we know we are all operating in a dysfunctional system that will not get any better until we deal with the supply issue. ‘It is getting worse. Every time we deal with these issues, more people come to us. People who never would have come in with regard to housing issues are now coming in. They are finding themselves in absolutely dreadful situations’. The Sinn Féin TD said he was particularly worried about the fact there are no repayment plans in HAP.

He said: ‘I have spoken specifically to the Minister about anomalies in relation to HAP and how people who should be able to get a payment cannot get it. We need to introduce some element of flexibility or we will only put more people into homelessness’. The ‘basics’, Deputy Ó Murchú said, must be done right. He said: ‘We must protect renters. We did some of these pieces of work during the pandemic. It is not beyond the realm of possibility to do so again. ‘We know that we will only do real busi-
ness when the State engages fully and we look at figures, such as the need to deliver at least 20,000 social and affordable homes per year, including cost rental. The fact is, if one talks to Mr. Tom Parlon and others from the Construction Industry Federation, they say they are solution-focused if they have targets that they will do all in their power to deliver. ‘It cannot be beyond the realm of possibility to do what has been done previously. We have no choice. We must deliver because we are failing everybody’.

Comfort me in all my difficulties thro the great favour thou didn’t enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour) Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didn’t cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Marys , and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St Martha. This miraculous saint grants everything before the Tuesdays are ended, no matter how difficult. E.D.

Record medal haul for Geraldine at World Masters Athletics Two years ago Geraldine Finegan feared her athletics career was over after suffering a brain injury which compromised her eyesight. Last week she returned from the World masters Athletics Championships which took place in Tampere, Finland with five medals including three bronze, a silver and a gold. Geraldine who grew up in Church St. took part in the event which saw the best athletes over the age of 35 compete for medals over twelve days between June 29th and July 10th. The highly decorated athlete took part in the over 55 section and admits she was nervous ahead of her first event the heptathlon. As it turned out she had no need to be as she smashed the national record by 300 points claiming the bronze medal with a total of 5827 points. “I think when the country locked down for Covid it actually worked out well for me because I was recovering from my brain injury, and I was able to pretty much hibernate for eighteen months. When I got the brain injury, I had issues with my sight which meant I couldn’t

Geraldine Finegan returned from the World Masters Athletic Championships with five medals. compete but with Covid everything was cancelled anyway so I didn’t really miss anything, and I was able to recover. “I was pretty nervous ahead of my first event at the worlds as it had been a while since I competed on the world stage in front of people watching in the stadium. Thankfully the event went well for me and I broke the national record as well as claiming bronze so that really got the ball rolling for me,” states Geraldine. The talented 57 year
old would go on to win four more medals including a gold in the team sprint relay. No Irish athlete has ever returned from a world games with as many medals and her latest haul makes it an astonishing total of 76 world and European medals won by Geraldine as well as six world records and countless national records. However, it is the experiences and pride in performance rather than the medals which mean the most to Geraldine
and she admits she often gives her medals away to young kids that she coaches to help push them to go faster. “The medals are just pieces of metal really and it’s more about the sense of achievement for me. I often challenge the kids I coach to a race and give them a head start and say if they can beat me, I will give them one of my medals. I have given plenty away and I don’t really pay much heed to how many I have. I love coaching kids and helping
them reach their potential and I always try to teach them the importance of believing in themselves. “My dad died when I was young, and I never had a coach growing up so I want to give them advice and knowledge that I missed out on growing up. My successes have come later in life and that’s ok, but I love seeing these kids reach their potential and grow in confidence,” stated Geraldine who is a member of Dundalk North-East Runners. “I have coached some of these children since the ages of seven and eight and they almost feel like your children by the time they reach their teenage years. The pride I feel when I see them doing well brings me so much joy and matches any pleasure I feel when competing myself. “I still have things I want to do in the sport and I still have ambitions such as breaking the record for the decathlon which I think is possible. I will continue to work hard and more importantly keep enjoying pushing myself and trying to get better,” she concluded.

After a two-year absence due to Covid-19, it is wonderful to let you know that the Brigid’s Way Pilgrimage is taking place in 2022. It will begin on Saturday the 23rd of July at Faughart birthplace of Brigid, ancient Celtic Goddess, and Christian Saint. And will finish at the Brigid’s well in Kildare town on Sunday the 31st of July. The Brigid of Faughart festival team are hosting Day 1 of this pilgrimage. They invite you to join Day 1 of this 9 day pilgrimage at Faughart Shrine (A91Y771) at 11:30 am where you can register and make a donation towards the running costs of the pilgrimage. We invite anyone who wishes to join us and walk the pilgrimage route from Faughart to Mount Avenue, via Kilcurry, Toberona, Fatima, Mount Avenue and
then through Sally Cox’s land which is according to the late Harold O’Sullivan (local historian) is part of the original route from Faughart to Kildare. When we gather at Faughart Shrine we will make our prayers for ourselves, for each of the people walking the 9 day pilgrimage, for our country, and for the world in these times of dramatic changes and challenges. Our prayers will include songs, and dances to energise all of us, especially those courageous souls who are undertaking this epic journey from Faughart to Kildare Monastic City. We hope you will come along. Please wear strong comfortable walking shoes, bring water for the journey with you (8km), sunscreen, and waterproof gear (depending on the weather). If you wish to collect some holy water from St Brig-
id’s Shrine, please bring a little bottle to fill up. Bring some food for your lunch which we will eat and share at Sally Cox’s house on Mount Avenue. Tea and coffee will be provided as gift from Padraig’s catering company. After lunch, we will walk through the magical land of Lisnawilly which is closely associated with St Brigid and the route she took to Kildare. We will bathe our feet in the Brigid’s stream and see some special recently discovered treasures. We hope you will join us with an open heart, and good intentions and be part of creating a more beautiful world. Directions to Faughart Shrine – Brigid of Faughart: Le Beannachtai, Dolores Whelan. Important milestone for WuXi
WuXi Vaccines have reached an important milestone for its QC potency lab in Dundalk with the news that it has received the GMP certificate from Ireland Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA). As the first GMP certificate, it marks an important milestone for WuXi Vaccines since weather-tight construction of the main building was finished in March 2021. The inspectors from HPRA evaluated WuXi Vaccines’ QC potency lab during a three-day inspection, including its quality system, facility, equipment and quality control. The QC potency lab became operational at WuXi Vaccines’ Ireland site in July 2020 as part of the company’s vaccine manufacturing facility. WuXi Vaccines is currently under a 20-year contract valued at approximately $3 billion with a global pharmaceutical company to enable the manufacturing of its commercial vaccine products. “The first GMP certificate of QC potency lab demonstrates WuXi Vaccines’ commitment to enabling our partners to pursue
