Friends and family of Colin Meegan, who passed away on Saturday from injuries caused in a road accident just outside Dundalk, gathered at the Square in the town centre last weekend to pay tribute to the popular Inniskeen man. Colin or Meego as he was affectionately known was well known locally through his time playing with Dundalk Rugby Club and the 51 year old former De La Salle student was described by a Dundalk Rugby Club representative as a true club legend who would never be forgotten. ‘RIP Colin Meegan.

One of the greatest characters to cross the gates in Mill Road. Your laugher and kindness will never be forgotten. A true club legend’ read the post from the local rugby club. Colin had been in hospital for almost three weeks after he was injured in a car accident at Martin’s Cross on March 27th. He was reportedly hit by a vehicle after stepping out of his own car just before 10pm. Gardaí have reissued their appeal for witnesses to the fatal road accident asking any road users who were travelling on the R215 in Rossmakay between 9:45pm and 10pm to contact them. Teacher unions are seeking a pay-rise to off-set the soaring cost of living Teacher unions – Irish National Teacher’s Organisation, Teachers’ Union of Ireland, and the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland – met this week for in-person conferences for the first time since 2019. An INTO emergency motion on the issue was the first item debated at the annual conference in Killarney on Tuesday, April 19. Under the current pay deal, teachers and other public servants are due to receive a 1 per cent pay increase in October next. The current pay deal

is set to expire at the end of the year. Minister for Education Norma Foley addressed the annual conference of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland in Wexford yesterday (Wednesday, April 20). Before the Minister’s address, the TUI debated motions seeking pay increases to counter rising inflation, with some delegates asking for a ballot for industrial action as part of the pay claim. The previous day Ms Foley addressed the ASTI conference in Cork. While her

speech to ASTI was mostly received in silence, she was heckled when she mentioned Leaving Certificate reform and pay. Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris has said that a new public sector pay agreement is needed before the end of the year. ASTI General Secretary

Kieran Christie called for significant investment in education so that schools are able to provide the necessary supports for students coming from the Ukraine: “This crisis and its impact on the education system is evolving on a daily basis.” Mr Christie also said the ongoing lack of investment in schools, coupled with innovation overload, has led to an occupational stress crisis in teaching: “Inadequate CPD, limited staffing and inadequate resources, implementing new

curricular models, and teaching overcrowded classes are some of the contributing factors that have sapped the morale and energy of our members.” The ASTI General Secretary also called on the Department of Education to revise and improve assault leave for teachers. Mr Christie said assault leave arrangements for teachers must cover “violence in all its forms and particularly that directed against people because of their gender or sexual orientation”.

Ramadan is like giving the body an NCT says local Imam This month Muslim’s all over the world have been waking up bleary eyed at sunrise to eat a meal which will be the last thing that passes their lips until dusk. The Islamic holy month known as Ramadan began at the start of this month on April 2nd and will end on the evening of May 1st. It is described by those who follow it as an intense period of both religious and personal reflection and al-

though it is mainly known for partakers fasting from dawn to dusk the leader of the local Muslim community has described it as much more than that. Imam Buye Nooh said the month long period of Ramadan is like an NCT for the mind, body and soul as Muslims seek to be closer to God by becoming better and kinder people. “Ramadan is a time of intense religious and personal reflection and a time where

Muslims seek to get closer to God,” stated Imam Buye Nooh. “We fast from sunset to dusk and at the moment that means stopping eating at 4.40am until dusk. We don’t only abstain from food but we stop drinking, smoking, intercourse or any bad habits like using bad language that we may partake on during the rest of the year. Of course there is no obligation for people who are elderly, or travelling or

maybe sick to partake in Ramadan and if you are not able to do it you are excused. It is not forced upon everybody. “It is a commandment from the Q’uaran chapter 2 verse 183-185 and as well as making us grateful for what we have in everyday life it also helps us to become closer to God. For all those who are hungry in the world it allows us to empathise with them who have no choice but to go hungry,” he added.

Councillor concerned about road safety at Carnbeg Hotel

“It can be tougher for people in non-Muslim countries to partake in Ramadan as they are away from their families and when we are here at work or school everybody else are having their normal routines and eating and drinking as usual which can make it more challenging. If we were at home everybody is doing the same thing so it is probably a bit easier. As well as that most schools and businesses close that bit earlier during Ram-

adan to make the process a little bit easier.

“I think most people enjoy the process and see it as an NCT for the human body where they can reboot ourselves and remember what is important to them. Sometimes we can get to engrossed in work and forget about religion and Ramadan is a great way of just pausing and resetting for a month each year,” concluded Imam Buye Nooh. Imam Buye Nooh.

Cllr John Reilly.

Kilcurry based councillor John Reilly has made his concerns known at the last number of County Council meetings regarding the lack of a footpath at the entrance to the Carnbeg Hotel on the Armagh Rd. The recent road realignment has left the pedestrians using the hotel in a precarious situation. Cllr Reilly claims that they have to walk right onto the very busy road and cross with no traffic calming measures. Last week, Cllr Reilly came across about 7 asylum seekers walking home to the hotel in the

evening time and walking on the road in the face of oncoming traffic. The hotel is currently leased by the Department of Justice and is being used as a place of residence for asylum seekers and refugees. On speaking with the asylum seekers, Cllr Reilly learned that they completely agreed with him on there being a road safety issue on this stretch of road. Cllr Reilly has been informed that the Department of Justice has organised a mini bus twice daily for the refugees to go in and out of town. This in itself confirms that the department is aware that there is a

severe safety issue on this road. Cllr Reilly strongly believes that a more permanent solution needs to be found but with the current war in Ukraine, the refugee numbers are only going to increase which means something needs to be done about this stretch of road’s pedestrian safety issue. Cllr Reilly says that as a local councillor in this area, he sees first hand the pedestrian problem that this road realignment has caused and action needs to be taken sooner rather than later before a serious fatality occurs.

Success at World Irish Large turnout for Easter commemoration Dancing Championships There was a large turnout, despite the inclement weather conditions, for Sinn Féin’s annual Easter commemoration at St Patrick’s Cemetery, Dowdallshill on Sunday, which was addressed by Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú. The deputy said it was the first time since 2019 that republicans had been able to gather in such numbers for the Easter commemoration which, he said, ‘allowed people to give the proper dignity and respect, in person, to our patriot dead’. In his speech, Deputy Ó Murchú said that Ireland has ‘changed utterly’ and is ‘a very different place than it was, even in 2019’. He said that there was now ‘a real opportunity that should not be squandered to deliver what men and women, for generations, have fought for – a united Ireland’. Referencing the war in Ukraine, the Dundalk TD said: ‘I am very glad

Cllr. Antóin Watters, Cllr. Edel Corrigan, Imelda Munster TD, Cllr. Kevin Meenan, former TD Paddy Agnew, Ruairí Ó Murchú TD and Cllr. Pearse McGeough at the Sinn Féin Easter commemoration at St Patrick’s Cemetery, Dundalk on Sunday.

that people in Ireland and around the world are now understanding the difficulties that people face in relation to self-determination, invasion, colonisation and oppression’. He said that annually, ‘fraternal greetings’ are sent by republicans at Easter to Catalans, Basques and to Palestinians and this year, he wanted to send fraternal wishes ‘to the people of Ukraine who are suffering under Russian aggression’. Deputy Ó Murchú

said it was important to ‘remember the sacrifices and struggle that people have gone through’. He said: ‘The Ireland we live in is still far from perfect, but it is a better place because of the sacrifices of those who have gone before us. ‘One hundred years ago, we were going through a revolutionary period where there was great hope, but it was followed by a civil war where that hope was dashed. ‘We ended up with

two conservative states – an apartheid state in the North where nationalists were treated like second class citizens, and a conservative state in the South that has, to this day, absolutely failed its people and has done nothing but stand on the side of vested interests, big business and not on the side of the people’. He said the elections in the North, on May 5, provided an opportunity to change politics in the North and Michelle O’Neill as First Minister ‘would be followed by Mary Lou McDonald as Taoiseach of a Sinn Féin government for the people, delivering the republican objective of Irish unity, all about equality where there is no room for hate’. He said: ‘We have all seen the terrible tragedy in Sligo recently and that’s not good enough. We want an Ireland that is a voice for justice, not just domestically, but internationally also’.

There was plenty of local success at the 50th World Irish Dancing Championships in Belfast with the McGee School of Irish Dance delighted with the performance of their dancers. Dundalk student Isabelle Janssen was one of just 14 teenagers from all over the island of Ireland to be conferred with a Rotary Youth Leadership award at the European Parliament’s offices in Dublin recently. The competition, which is one of Rotary Ireland’s longest running youth projects, rewards young people with clear leadership potential based on their extra-curricular activities. It is run in conjunction with the EU offices in Dublin and Euroscola in Strasbourg. Isabelle, who is a student at Dundalk Grammar School received the award from Rotary Ireland District Governor David Murray and Patrick O’Riordan, PR Officer with the European Parliament. Isabelle was sponsored by Dundalk Rotary Club. Before the competition, Isabelle who’s from the Netherlands was involved in creating an exhibition to appeal to youth at the Van

She is currently Chairperson of her school’s Student Council, contributes to and edits a newspaper with former classmates and is representing her school at this year’s Young Economist of the Year competition. She said she picked up valuable

research and presentation skills from participating in the competition. “This competition has helped me develop useful presentation and interpersonal skills, while also enabling me to make many new friends from all over! Additionally, the competition allowed

me to explore two great cities together with the other participants.”Usually, the award winners enjoy an exciting, six day, all expenses paid, team building trip to Belfast, Dublin and Strasbourg. This includes visits to The Titanic Centre, a tour of Stormont, a visit to

the European Parliament offices in Dublin and a tour of Dail Eireann. Participants then fly out to Strasbourg for the highlight of the trip, a full day of debating a variety of motions at Euroscola at the European Parliament with about five hundred other

students from all over Europe. On the final day the winners enjoy a sightseeing trip around Strasbourg. Unfortunately, this year due to covid the Strasbourg element and some of the tours did not proceed. However, the group did visit The Titanic Centre and City Hall in Belfast and went on tours of Dublin Castle and Trinity College in Dublin. The final part of the trip was a visit to the EU’s Dublin office, Europe House and a showcase event in The Freemasons Hall in Dublin city centre where the students presented on a range of issues to a panel including Green MEP Ciaran Cuffe. Some of the topics the students presented on included European Security, Climate Change and the Environment, and Migration. David Murray, District Governor of Rotary Ireland said the standard of the presentations was hugely impressive. “I have to compliment

7

Isabelle and all of this year’s winners for the extremely high standard of their presentations. This year the programme was unfortunately curtailed due to covid but the response of this group to that and everything else covid has thrown at them has been really impressive. The resilience and enthusiasm they have shown in their local communities and during this programme reflects so well on all our young people.” “Hopefully the full programme will be back up and running next year and I would urge as many young people as possible from every part of the island to take part” Mr Murray said. The Rotary Youth Leadership Development Competition is open to 16- and 17-year-olds who are living on the island of Ireland. Dundalk TT encourage participation Spring Clean Dundalk Tidy Towns are inviting all residents to join us in our Spring Clean on the last weekend in April. 2022 is a very important year for Dundalk. As a result of the success of Dundalk in the Supervalu Tidy Towns competition, Dundalk has been nominated to compete in Ireland’s Best Kept Town Competition. This all-island competition sees towns from North and South compete for the title of the best kept town in Ireland. The adjudicators visit at an unknown time in May and we are working hard to ensure Dundalk is looking its best. The town will be judged on a number of categories including streets and public areas, residential areas, tidiness, business buildings and green spaces.

Dundalk Tidy Towns get ready for Spring Clean. As part of our preparation, we are holding three events during the Spring Clean Weekend. The weekend kicks off at 7.00pm on Friday 29th April meeting at Lidl, Avenue Road.

The following day at 10.00am we will meet at St Helena’s Park and the weekend will conclude on Sunday 1st May at 10.00am at Lennon’s, Castletown Road. Bags, litter picks and gloves will

be provided. Events will be 90 minutes in duration. We are encouraging all of our Adopt a Patch volunteers to carry out a litter pick in their area over the weekend. And we invite all residents’ associations in Dundalk to consider a clean up of their area over the weekend. For those who cannot participate, perhaps consider a 2 Minute Street Clean at their own house, perhaps removing a few weeds along a curb or flower bed or picking up a few pieces of litter. Let’s together make this the year Dundalk becomes Ireland’s Best Kept Town. For more details check out Dundalk Tidy Towns on Facebook or Instagram or email dundalktidytowns@gmail.com.

New Creative Spark Downtown digital hub is a ‘gamechanger’

There was praise in Leinster House last week for the Dundalk digital hub, conceived by Creative Spark. Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú highlighted how Creative Spark Downtown in Clanbrassil Street is a ‘game changer’ for remote working during questions to Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD. The Dundalk deputy said a good example of remote working hubs was Creative Spark Downtown, where ‘the benefits of a workplace can be seen without necessarily the need to undergo long comgmutes, as might be the case where a business is based in Dublin or fure ther afield. d ‘That is vital. I have recently had phone calls relating to the connected hubs funding call and people have expressed interest. ‘We need to ensure the correct funding mechanisms are in place

Ruairí Ó Murchú, TD. in order that we can deliver this scheme where it is needed. It will be a lifeline for small towns, in particular, and even for larger towns such as Dundalk. ‘We have a big issue with vacant sites. They could be used as hubs but, of course, we will also have to consider the wider issue of housing. ‘In fairness, County Louth has a number of these hubs and is al-

ready seeing successes, as the Minister pointed out in respect of the Mill centre, Drogheda, and beyond. ‘Creative Spark has its primary building as well as this new, secondary building, but a considerable number of other businesses are examining the idea too’. He said that the level of funding for hubs needs to be sufficient. He said: ‘It is about improving circumstances

where there are already remote working hubs or where remote working of some sort exists. ‘Do we need to consider other modalities to be able to provide for new, perhaps small remote working hubs in towns such as Dundalk?’ In response, Minister Humphreys said local authorities can apply to her department for funding through the town and village renewal scheme or the rural regeneration scheme for the infrastructure. In terms of the kitting out of the facilities, you can apply to the connected hubs but, if you want to do so, you have to register to use the app. ‘We have 223 hubs on board and aim to have 400 on board by 2025. I expect us to meet that target way before that. We want to get employers to see the benefits of remote working and we want more people to get involved with it. We have one chance and it is now’

Outcomers statement following Sligo murders

Outcomers are shocked and saddened by the terrible murders of two men in the past few days in Sligo, we send our deepest sympathies to the family, loved ones, and friends of these men and to the LGBT community in Sligo as they try to come to terms with this awful tragedy. Bernardine Quinn, Manager of Outcomers has said “I would never have expected to have seen this news in our country in 2022, this is so hard to comprehend. Outcomers have been working closely with the Garda Diversity Office and have been in contact with other LGBTI+ organisations across the country today as we plan how we support our community in the coming weeks and months.” We echo the words of Paula Fagan, CEO of LGBT Ireland asking for the progression of Hate Crime Legislation and to say that the violent attack on a gay man in Dame Street in Dublin last week, and of Transgender young persons in Dundalk are all too frequent. Most importantly that the focus of these events must remain

firmly on the perpetrators of this crime. As a community LGBTI+ people have the right to feel safe on our streets and the events of the last few days shows that this is not always the case. Outcomers hosted a public vigil in conjunction with other LGBT organisations around the country on Friday at the Town Square. If you are a member of the LGBT community and you would like to speak to someone in confidence you can call the LGBT Helpline from 6:30 to 10pm every evening this week at 1800 929 539

Outcomers lend our voice to the appeal for the general public to assist An Garda Síochána with their enquiries and investigation. Any person with information or concerns can contact their local Garda Station. Members of the Garda National Diversity and Integration Unit are also on standby to assist at 01-6663150. If you would like to contact a Diversity officer in your area to speak to in confidence you can find the details here. Garda Diversity Officers contact list: https://www.garda.ie/en/ crime-prevention/communityengagement/community-engagement-offices/garda-national-diversity-integration-unit/ garda-diversity-officers-list-january-2022.pdf Again, our Thoughts are with the Families and friends of Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee, R.I.P. We ask our community to stay strong and take care. Outcomers office is open Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm if you would like to call in or phone us on 042 93 29816.

Jinx returns to the Spirit Store with new album Jinx Lennon returns to the Spirit Store following the life affirming, rollercoaster ride of last November’s jam-packed show in the Store. This is the launch for his new album PET RENT, an hour-long garage rock odyssey full of punk, glam and showband beats. A cracked eye-lens view of provincial Irish life. According to Jinx, PET RENT is named after the horrible new charge that some landlords are landing on tenants making them pay extra for keeping domestic animals. “They get away with it in Dublin” he states “but it probably wouldn’t get too far amongst the citizens of North Louth”. The Jinx Lennon show always aims to lift the soul when the world stomps on your head so expect rawness and mayhem onstage as Jinx transforms everyday mundane border life stories into tales of heroism and righteous truth .New songs include one about the Belfast refugee crisis of the early seventies, when Dundalk town opened up its doors to those seeking refuge from the trouble in the North. Joining Jinx onstage on guitar will be Chris Barry from Myles Manleys band who produced Junior Brothers debut album and some of the recent Jinx LP’s. Special guests include Derry sons Strength N.I.A, who fall into that strange space between The Fall and Ray Man-

St Louis all set to stage Aladdin show St Louis is gearing up for its first musical since lockdown cruelly shut down their planned 2020 show just six days before it was scheduled to take place. This year the show is definitely going to happen, and the students, along with their teachers Ms Selena Reynolds and Ms Sonia Mc Eneaney are spending the Easter Break ensuring all will be ready for Tuesday April 28th, their opening night. This year the production is a spectacular one. Aladdin is a Disney show, a two act spectacular about a young thief who falls in love with the beautiful princess Jasmine who rejects the suitor sent to her in favour of the young Aladdin. Throw in a baddie in the guise of Jafar, some classic Disney songs loved by young and old, and you have the perfect evening’s entertainment. Sarah Guinan plays the part of Aladdin. ‘I’ve been dreaming about be-

Everyone loves to hate the bad guy but it’s so much fun to play that part.’ For teachers Selena Reynolds and Sonya Mc Eneaney it is the culmination of six months’ work. ‘We love the challenge of a musical. Everything is done in house, from the music, the dance and the acting, to the stage sets and props. Every girl had the chance to audition, and, as happens every year in the school, we find new stars who have never before performed on stage. We are looking forward to the end product next week, and to seeing all the hard work come to fruition.’ The show will take place at 7:30 next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 26-28 April and tickets are available online on the school website at https://stlouisdundalk.ie/aladdin/

‘Monday Mix’ Concert Music students at Dundalk Institute of Technology got together with their friends from RehabCare for a lively on campus concert on Monday 4th April. On the day the group played songs that they had composed themselves along with other firm favorites such as Don’t stop believing by Journey, Hard Road by Black Sabbath, Country Roads by John Denver, Walk the Line by Johnny Cash, Post Malone’s Circles and finished with Wagon Wheel. This heartwarming and smile inducing concert was a celebration of a phenomenal experience as they brought an eight-week collaborative project to a close. This was the fourth time that students on the BA (Hons) Music had collaborated with RehabCare and this year it was an exceptionally special project after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. This innovative partnership between DkIT and RehabCare has benefits for all the participants who engage collabora-

The DkIT music students engage with Community Music and Workshop Studies as part of their programme and a number of graduates have progressed to careers facilitating workshops and working with a variety of groups in education and care settings. RehabCare in Louth provides services such as resource centres and supported accommodation to more than 100 people with intellectual disabilities, enabling them to achieve their full potential and a

better quality of life. Sandy Sneddon Coordinator in RehabCare said of the collaboration ‘there was a real energy developed between the participants, each bringing their own skills, Confidences, and performance styles. Being on stage is about so much more than playing an instrument or singing a song - you have to play the crowd! In that respect everyone had something to learn from everybody else! The feeling after the concert was overwhelmingly positive with participants from RehabCare keen to make more music and

get more involved in projects and courses at DKIT - paving the way for creativity, education, and craic!’ A big congratulations to all the musicians and performers involved during the project; DkIT participants included Dr Daithi Kearney, Gavin Gribben, Jessica Mudrew, Faye Morgan McArdle, Angel Chen Jia Ng and Aoife Higgins, RehabCare Participants comprised of Sandy Sneddon, Alex Tumeye, Rodger Zyro, Sarah Malone, John Stokes, Aoife Lawless, Jason Kelly and Moninna McCarthy.

Louth councillor delighted with proceeds of crime initiative In July 2020, at the Drogheda Joint Policing Committee meeting, Chief Superintendent Christy Mangan informed the meeting that the Gardai had seized €1m in cash from criminals as a direct result of the feud that had engulfed our town. Cllr Paddy Mc Quillan, who was at the meeting, asked if it was possible that some, if not all of this money be redirected back into the communities that were directly affected by the feud. This was the beginning of Cllr Mc Quillan’s Proceeds of Crime Initiative which culminated in Minister Helen Mc Entee’s announcement last week that the Community Safety Innovation Fund of €2m was now open to applications. “I’m extremely happy with the outcome. This initiative was common sense to me. Money gained from drugs and criminality should be redirected back into the communities that have suffered. I asked Deputy Fergus

O’Dowd to ask Minister Mc Entee, on my behalf, would she be open to the idea of drawing up legislation to have these monies seized available to communities and organisations. Thankfully she said that she was open to the idea and I would personally like to thank her for getting behind this.” What started as a local initiative soon became a national initiative. “Myself and Independent Maeve Yore contacted Independent Councillors around the country and explained what I had proposed. Over fifteen Independent Councillors then wrote to Minister Mc Entee through their respective councils urging her to draw up the necessary legislation to allow the proceeds of crime to go back to communities. The announcement this week is a real positive outcome. This is real change. This shows that Independent’s can bring about so-

cial change that benefits society and communities.” Cllr Mc Quillan, who was the first to call the people of Drogheda on the streets to demand government intervention on the feud, was delighted to see his initiative as a recommendation in the Geiran Report Implementation Plan. “This was great to see. The fact that my initiative was a recommendation in the Implementation Plan, added weight to having the legislation introduced”, he added, “I would like to thank Deputy O’Dowd for his help, my colleague Cllr Maeve Yore, and also all the Independent Councillors across the country who rolled in behind this. There is now €2m there that wasn’t there before and groups and organisations throughout the country will benefit. I’m very proud to have contribute to real social change that will affect hundreds of thousands of people in the years to come.”
