Amy all set to make Olympic dream a reality

DunDalk boxer amy Broadhurst has pretty much done it all in the amateur boxing game. a multiple national champion, Commonwealth and European champion as well of course as that special World championship victory last May in Istanbul when she became just the third Irish woman to win an amateur world title. The Muirhevnamór southpaw is hot property right now and lucrative contracts await as she prepares to enter the professional ranks in the near future. However, there is still one final box to be ticked in the amateur game and that is to turn her lifelong dream into a reality by making it to the Paris Olympics next year.

This weekend amy travels to krakow in Poland as part of a twelve strong Irish team as she tries to qualify for the Olympics in Paris next year. The 26-year old has a chance to fulfil her lifelong dream and if she does manage to qualify this weekend it will be the culmination of almost twenty years hard work given her first ever fight took place when she was just seven years of age.

it won’t be easy given the fact that there is no 63kg weight class in the Olympics meaning that Amy has to fight in the

66kg (Welterweight) section against naturally bigger girls. ideally Amy would fight in the 60kgs section but Kellie Harrington has been selected for that weight class leaving the Dundalk boxer with no choice but to campaign

at a higher weight. According to Amy’s dad and coach Tony his daughter is ready to turn her lifelong dream into a reality.

Paula elected as Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council

Fine Gael councillor Paula Butterly has been elected as Louth County Council’s chairperson at the local authority’s annual general meeting.

Cllr Butterly, who is from Togher, replaces outgoing chairperson, Fianna Fail councillor Conor Keelan.

Fianna Fail’s Andrea McKevitt was elected the new vice-chair of LCC at the local authority meeting which took place on Monday morning last.

Sinn Fein Cllr Kevin Meenan had thrown his hat into the ring for the position of chairperson, however, he was defeated by Cllr Butterly by 15 votes to six.

There were five councillors absent, while independents Maeve Yore, Paddy McQuillan and Bernie

Conlon abstained. Meanwhile, Cllr McKevitt defeated Sinn Fein Cllr Antoin Watters and independent Paddy McQuillan for the position of vice-chair.

Cllr Butterly was coopted as a member of Louth County Council in February, 2021 – replacing Colm Markey, who is now MeP for ireland north West, having replaced Mairead McGuinness, following her appointment as eU Commissioner.

Paula was born and grew up in Togher, Co. Louth, and lived in italy for 22 years, returning to ireland in 2016.

On her return, Paula enrolled her son in the local national school and enjoys actively participating in her son’s wide ranging sporting activities including

GAA, football and soccer. Paula said she was honourd to be elected by her fellow members.

“i am honoured to have been elected Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council and i would like to thank my fellow members for supporting me. i intend to continue to work on issues which affect families such as additional educational needs and access to services, with a particular focus on rural issues such as agriculture, transport and rural community services across the length and breadth of the County.” - Cllr Paul Butterly, newly elected LCC chairperson.

Meanwhile Cllr. Andrea McKevitt congratulated Paula while thanking her colleagues for electing her to the vice

Cathaoirleach role.

“it is a huge honour for me to hold this position for two years running, i am delighted to have garnered the support of my colleagues.

“Throughout the last year i had at times been called upon to step up on behalf of the Cathaoirleach, at events and in chairing meetings, it was a real pride to represent our County. i also wish to thank our outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Conor Keelan, who was a wonderful ambassador for Louth over the past 12 months both at home and abroad.

“i have no doubt that Councillor Butterly will be amazing over her term and i am really looking forward to working with her, i know from different projects we have worked on together before that she will be a great asset to the position and i wish her every success in the forthcoming year,” stated Andrea.

the higher weight,” explained Tony.

She has to make at least the semi-final to secure qualification. It will not be an easy task as it’s an open draw so Amy could potentially get her hardest opponent in the first round.

There is a lot of pressure on her as she’s been dreaming about Olympic qualification since she was a kid. But she is ready to perform and training has gone really well. She has been sparring in italy in Germany ahead of Poland and she has been looking really strong. Amy travelled to Poland early on Tuesday morning and myself, my wife Sheila and eldest son Paul will head over on Thursday evening. Amy is due to fight on Saturday and

then hopefully Monday if she wins her first one.

“She’s achieved brilliant things in the sport and has coped really well with the pressure but this one will be a bit tougher emotionally for her because of the expectation and the enormity of the Olympics. There is a mixture of nervousness and excitement there and she is ready to finally turn her lifelong dream into a reality. The fact that she has so much interest from professional promoters takes a little bit of that pressure off as she knows she has a career ahead of her no matter what but the Olympics means everything to Amy and she is determined to get it done this weekend,” stated Tony.

THe evening of Monday the 12th of June saw the final of three 2023 Annual Meetings for Louth County Council Municipal District Councils. Municipal District Councils were formed in accordance with the Local Government Reform Act 2014 following the dissolution of Town Councils. Municipal District meetings of Drogheda, Dundalk, and Ardee are held on the first Monday, Tuesday and Thursday of the month respectively excepting on a bank holiday when the Drogheda meeting goes to the following Monday. The Annual Meeting for each is typically held immediately preceding the June monthly meeting each year. The first order of business of an Annual Meeting is the election of a new Cathaoirleach and the second the election of a Leas-Chathaoirleach.

Ardee Municipal District Council covering the mid-Louth area and comprising of 6 elected Members (Councillors) of Louth County Council were the first to say thank you to their outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Paula Butterly.

as she remains a Member of Ardee MD. Along with her colleagues, she elected Cllr Dolores Minogue as new Cathaoirleach for the 2023 / 2024 term of office. There are currently 19 staff employed at the school, a jump from ten a year ago. There are, of course, ongoing and increased costs of running St Mochtas nS, and the Parents’ Association, under the chairpersonship of Catherine Shaw, decided to organise a family fun day.

Mr Martin said: ‘The fun day is a great opportunity for the community to get together to help us celebrate this milestone anniversary for the school and also to raise funds. We want to build an inclusive play area for all the children in the school, as well as upgrading the iT infrastructure’.

Mr Martin sad: ‘This is a great way to mark the 50th anniversary and to bring the community together for a fun afternoon. i want to thank all the staff, in particular vice principal, Aileen Carroll, for all the work they do every day to make the school the vibrant place we love’. entry is free to the event, but tickets need to be reserved on eventbrite.ie at St Mochtas nS Louth Village Family Fun Day Tickets, Sun 25 Jun 2023 at 13:00 | eventbrite.

A summer’s night in Blackrock

The sun has now gone to rest, It’s last pink hues sunk in the west. The benign presence of the full moon Now illuminates this balmy night in June. The immense amphitheatre of its light, Is one of serene delight.

Above in the enchanted heaven of sky, Nebulous clouds go drifting by. The low lullaby of the full tide, Is rhythmically whispering across the great divide.

The moonlit expanse of sea Between Dunany Point and Gyles’s Quay. Along the seal wall the muted cadences of talk, As couples go for a nocturnal walk. The streetlights amber glow, Reflects on the road below.

The rows and rows of parked cars, People, wine and dine in the restaurants and bars.

new Dundalk Parkrun for people affected by cancer

DunDALk parkrun is setting up a new event for people affected by cancer called 5k Your Way, which is due to start on Saturday, June 24 at 9.30am.

It’s a free, fun and friendly 5k community event in the DkIT playing fields that people can either run, jog or walk.

“Participants have to register online before you first come along. You only have to register once and don’t forget to bring a scannable copy of your barcode,” said Dundalk parkrun member Martin O’Hanlon.

Originally from the Cooley

Peninsula, Martin currently lives on the Dublin Road in Dundalk. He took part in the town’s very first parkrun in June 2015.

“Last Saturday, we celebrated our eighth anniversary. It started in Malahide in 2012 and started in the uk in 2004,” said Martin.

“now it’s in 22 countries around the world and there are 139 events in Ireland each Saturday at 9.30am.

“The Dundalk Junior parkrun started over a year ago. I’ve volunteered at it on a few occasions.”

Martin added: “We are calling the parkrun event for people affected by cancer 5k Your Way. There are five of

these events set up in Ireland now.

“There is one in Galway, naas, two in Dublin and now in Dundalk. In northern Ireland there is one in Belfast and Lisburn.

“It’s for people who are living with or beyond cancer. I’m an ambassador for it as I had surgery last October and now, I’m in recovery from cancer.”

He continued: “The beauty of being involved in a parkrun is that the level of fitness is helpful in recovery.

“I’d encourage people to come along. It’s starting at the end of the month and will be on the last Saturday of each month.

“However, people are welcome to come along to the regular Dundalk parkrun every Saturday morning.”

Martin concluded: “We are also hoping that participants will give us feedback but there is no pressure to do so. Participants will get an email time they take part so they can track their progress.

“There are physical benefits and psychological benefits. It can help to combat the fatigue associated with cancer. Socialising with others is beneficial too.” For more information please visit the website www. parkrun.ie/dundalk.

Kenny named as new Dundalk RFC head coach

PAT Kenny will take charge of Dundalk RFC next season as the Wicklow native was named as their new head coach replacing Dave Fearon.

Living in Ardee, Pat arrives in Dundalk with a strong reputation having previously been involved with Leinster

rugby as a Community Development Officer and with Clongowes Wood College where he coached. He has also got some valuable AiL level experienced having coached both navan and Old Belvedere.

Pat’s backroom team will include John Mc-

Donnell who will be the team manager and Colin Corkery who takes up the role as backs coach. John was involved with last years successful U18.5 group who secured the club’s first ever Leinster Premier Division title.

Pat will be hoping to unlock the undoubted

potential of a Dundalk side who narrowly avoided a second successive relegation last year having been demoted from division 1A two seasons ago.

Promotion back to division 1A is the short term goal for Pat and his team while in the longer term a return to

the AiL will surely be the ultimate goal. A lot of emphasis has been put into improving the club’s youth structures in recent years and Kenny will be looking to use some of the young talent that is coming through as witnessed by last year’s success at U18.5 level.

Louth Race Championships

Castletown Girls Sports Day

On Thursday last (June 15th), Cuchulainn Cycling Club hosted the Louth Road Race Championships. The race was run off in sweltering heat in and around the Ravensdale area and a good field saw riders from all the main clubs in the county line up.

In the women’s race underage rider Rhiannon Dolan of Cuchulainn Cycling Club continued her good form for the season taking a dominating solo win. Rhiannon has notched up a number of top results so far this season racing in the green of Cuchulainn and blue of Leinster. Most recently she won the inaugural Debbie

Barklay (nee kane) Memorial road race held in Belfast on June 10th.

In the men’s race held over 57km, the action was thick and fast from the start with Aian Cunningham and Eve McCrystal both riding very strongly. By the mid way point a selection of the 8 strongest riders in the race had been made. On the final time up the longest climb on the course, neutralised Louth man neill Delahaye of Bellurgan Wheelers put in a big attack and quickly established a gap. Liam Dolan, underage rider Callum McCaffrey (both of Cuchulainn CC) and Conor Mckeown (unattached), man-

aged to bridge across to him, with the rest in hot pursuit behind. These 4 worked well together to stay away and in the sprint for the finish Delahaye went early and just managed to hold off Mckeown to take the gold. Dolan beat out McCaffrey to round out the podium.

A big thanks is extended to all the marshalls and the Red Cross who provided ambulance support on the night. The next racing event of the club is the Bike Station Summer Cycling League. Starting Thursday June 22nd the league will run over 6 rounds.

Councillor frustrated over water infrastructure in Kilcurry

LOCAL Fine Gael

Councillor, John Reilly, has said he is being forced to write to Minister kieran O’Donnell stating his frustrations with uisce Eireann’s reluctance to extend the water main to the village of kilcurry.

Cllr Reilly says ‘I wish to welcome the improvements to the water infrastructure on the Mill road and the Toberona area but unfortunately, that is where the improvements stop’.

Autism report must be acted upon states O’Murchú

A ‘CRADLe to grave’ suite of services for those living with autism in the State where universal design for society is central is the key message of a seminal report by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism which was launched last week.

Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó

Murchú was one of the TDs who attended the now disbanded committee’s meetings on a regular basis and who inputted to the final report which made 109 recommendations.

It is so frustrating, he states, that he has been highlighting this issue for almost 3 years. A site is readily available for a pumping station and yet uisce Eireann has no goodwill to the people of kilcurry. We have a school with over 400 pupils depending on a well, community centre, and creche. It is just so hard to believe that a village so close to one of the biggest towns in Ireland can’t get a water supply.

The committee said that the recommendations are ‘urgently needed to provide for greater crossdepartmental collaboration, joined-up service provision, clear pathways and direct access to services, accessible information, comprehensive consultation with the autistic community and well-resourced public services.’

Several key issues were identified by the committee, including delays in Assessment of need, poor access to assessments and services, the lack of inclusivity in

education and a lack of employment supports.

The key ‘whole-ofgovernment’ recommendations made by the Committee are: enact legislation which requires the State to publish an autism strategy every three years, establish a committee or monitoring group featuring autistic people to participate in drafting and monitoring the strategy. initiate national autism acceptance campaigns to promote the participation of autistic people in all areas of social and cultural life.

initiate consultation with the autistic community and their families to establish how best to

collect disaggregated data for the purposes of forward-planning; ensure that the needs of autistic people are taken into account when designing all public services and include the autistic community when designing autism-specific services; Develop a long-term workforce planning strategy to address staffing issues in disability services, including recruitment and retention of staff; establish a ‘One Stop Shop’ programme where autistic people or those who think they may be autistic can receive information and can link in with the services that they require.

Addressing An Taoiseach following the publication of the report, Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘We know we need to make sure we do the workforce planning and deal with the work conditions but we must also look at the services we have and how we can provide the best bang for buck.

‘Overall, i would like to think that the recommendations will be considered during the budgetary process because we are absolutely failing our citizens and we really need to set a marker. What is happening is not good enough, so i request that this happens’.
