Students at Dundalk Grammar School plead with school board to add Gaelic games to list of sports played in the school

HUNDREDS of students took part in a protest both inside and outside the Dundalk Grammar School on Monday morning as part of a campaign to try and get the school to allow them to play Gaelic games in the school. Students wore Gaelic jerseys and held placards asking the school to give reasons why there is no gaelic games played in the Grammar.

In a letter to the school’s board of management students asked for answers as to why newly introduced sports such as basketball and cricket didn’t have to go through the same rigorous approval process to be played as Gaelic football is currently. They also asked the question, ‘Is Gaelic foot-

ball banned in Dundalk Grammar School and if so why?’

Gaelic football has previously been played in the school many years ago but has been off the agenda for decades much to the annoyance of a number of students in the school. Indeed, a petition handed into the board of management was signed by over 400 students asking for Gaelic to be reintroduced.

Sixth year student Jack Stokes who plays gaelic football with St Kevin’s in Dunleer knows it is to late for him to play gaelic in the school but he said he was joining the protest to help ensure future generations could play the national game should they so choose.

Students at Dundalk Grammar School hold protest

“I play GAA with my local club and lots of my friends do as well and it is a bit disheartening when they get to play inter schools competitions like the Lennon Cup and we don’t get to play against them. The three main pillars of sport in the school are Cricket, Hockey and Soccer but there isn’t even a boys senior hockey team and I think it’s obvious that gaelic football would attract a lot of interest. There are plenty of girls and boys playing gaa for their local clubs so I can’t understand why the board won’t allow us play. This has been an issue throughout my whole time in the school and although I played other sports and enjoyed my time here it would have been better had they allowed gaelic football be played in the school,” stated Jack.

Many of the students who attended the protest praised the headmaster Jonathan Graham for allowing them to protest and also said that a number of teachers and parents had been very supportive with regards to them trying to get gaelic introduced. Instead, most of the ire

was pointed towards the school board. Before the protest, local Sinn Fein TD Ruairí O Murchú met with the school’s headmaster Jonathan Graham dexcribing the meeting as ‘constructive’.

The Sinn Féin TD said: ‘The meeting with Mr Graham was a follow up on outstanding issues that we had agreed to discuss, but top of the agenda was the GAA games issue and the fact that there is a huge number of kids at Dundalk Grammar School who wish to play Gaelic football.

‘It was a very constructive meeting. My belief is that there should be a further, very serious conversation with the Board of Governors at Dundalk Grammar School, particularly given the depth of feeling there is.

‘You can see that from the huge number of people at the protest today, which actually only included the senior classes. It was very well organised in an inclusive and positive way and the school deserves credit for allowing it to happen.

‘It showed a decent way of democracy in action. But we need to find a solution to

this issue, given the depth of feeling from staff and students, and we want to see this resolved,’ stated O Murchú.

Louth GAA Chairman Sean McClean revelaed to the Dundalk Leader on Tuesday morning that he also had positive talks

with Mr Graham and that he had contacted Monaghan County Board to ask if they could supply 100 tickets to Grammar students who wanted to attend the game between Louth and Meath in Inniskeen this Saturday. “Between ourselves

Tidy Towns group happy with compliance of ‘No Poster’ request

UNLESS you haven’t left your house for the past couple of weeks you will have realised that the local and European elections are coming up due to the large numbers of posters dotted all over the county.

However, anybody walking through the town centre will have noticed it has become more or less a poster free zone thanks to a request from the Louth Tidy Towns Together group to all election candidates.

Before the election the Louth Tidy Towns Together Group asked candidates that no posters relating to the forthcoming referenda be erected on the ap-

proaches to 17 designated towns and villages in County Louth. Those areas are as follows: Annagassan, Ardee, Blackrock, Carlingford, Castlebellingham/Kilsaran, Collon, Dromiskin, Dunleer, Grange, Haggardstown, Knockbridge, Lordship/Gyles Quay, Louth Village,

Monasterboice/Tenure, Omeath, Sandpit, Stabannon, Tallanstown, Termonfeckin, Dundalk (core area of Market Square, Clanbrassil Street and Earl Street). Speaking on social media this week a spokesperson for Louth Tidy Towns Together said they were apprecia-

and Monaghan County Board we have organised for 100 tickets to be provided to Grammar School students for the game between Louth and Meath this Saturday. The gesture was received very well by the headmaster and we had a very constructive conversation where I offered to give the school any support they might need to help get gaelic games up and running in the school. We will sit down again and have more conversations in relation to what exactly those supports would entail but I would say the talks so far have been positive,” stated the Louth County Board Chairman.

tive of the support from local candidates.

“Our hardworking Tidy Towns volunteers really appreciate the support of election candidates for our Voluntary Code to avoid posters within 50km speed limits and at landscaped entrances.

“The vast majority of candidates have fully supported our request but a few glitches are noted and we would appeal to those candidates to remove and relocate posters to show your support for the efforts made to present our towns and villages in a clean, tidy and uncluttered manner on an all year round basis.,” read the statement.

Short notice cancellation of 100X bus raised in Dáil

SHORT notice cancellations of the 100X bus from Dundalk to Dublin will be debated in Leinster House this week after Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú secured a Topical Issue slot on the problem.

The matter was due to be debated last Thursday, but officials needed more time to get answers from organisations charges with running the service and the debate will now take place on Tuesday.

However, Deputy Ó Murchú used speaking time in the Dáil to highlight the problem to Transport Minister Eamon Ryan and said that on May 15, there were five cancellations of the 100X service.

He said: ‘It is the bus that goes to the airport so it can be imagined how much of a disaster cancellations are for people trying to avoid bringing their car to

There were five cancellations of the 100X service on May 15th according to local TD.

Dublin and pay the parking fees in the airport.

‘Two such buses were cancelled this morning (May 16), the 6.30 a.m. service and the 8.30 a.m. service.

‘People were told at very short notice; I think it went on the website after 7 a.m. Bus Éireann has eight low entry, LE, type buses on this route but they are more than 12 years old.

‘Some of them have more than one million

kilometres on the clock and are breaking down. There are five buses in the garage at present.

NTA public service obligation, PSO, buses are available but Bus Éireann is not able to use them. This is a real issue, especially at this time of year. I ask the Minister for Transport to engage so we can get a solution to the problem in the short and long term.

Minister Ryan said he would look at the 100X

service ‘in detail’.

The minister said numbers on Bus Éireann PSO services went up by 27% last year and one of the first things that needs to be done is to ensure that drivers are properly paid.

He said: ‘My understanding is that a benchmark exercise on pay was undertaken, which resulted in improved terms for mechanics in January this year, to ensure that their remuneration is in line.

‘The quota requirement for apprenticeships has also been increased. This is a problem we can overcome.

‘It is part of a wider issue in the economy. We will overcome those challenges in providing the new buses and the better bus corridors so that they really fly, as well as having the drivers and mechanics to operate them’.

Ardee Bypass Judicial Review dismissed in its entirety on all counts—O’Dowd & Minogue

LOCAL Fine Gael TD, Fergus O’Dowd, and local Fine Gael Councillor, Dolores Minogue, have warmly welcomed news that Justice O’Regan has dismissed in its entirety on all counts the Ardee Bypass Judicial Review.

O’Dowd said “This is great news and brings us one step closer to seeing the bypass becoming a reality, we must now wait to see if a formal appeal to the court of appeal will be submitted typically within 28 days.

“Cllr. Dolores Minogue and I have campaigned for a number of years to get this project over the line as the bypass will greatly improve the quality of life for Ardee residents and businesses.

O’Dowd added “The bypass will improve road safety, reduce vehicular traffic in the town, provide better air quality and allow for more active travel opportunities in the town when built so we have our fingers crossed this will get green light in the coming weeks.

Cllr Minogue said

“I’m over the moon that the courts have made this decision, this bypass will finally rid the town of so much unnecessary traffic and pollution and it will give the traders a real boost.

“We know Ardee has so much to offer and this bypass would finally allow the town to breathe and develop appropriately. The council have informed us that they have contacted TII to request a meeting to further discuss the project.”

Local Fianna Fáil councilllor John Sheridan also expressed his delight following the ruling.

“I welcome the High Court dismissing the appeal against the Ardee N52 bypass on all counts. The bypass is an important infrastructure project and it really must no proceed immediately following this judgement.”

“This is extraordinarily significant step for Ardee. For far too long Ardee has been choked with lorries and pollution. The N52 bypass is a significant opportunity to remove cross country traffic from Ardee and open it up.”

“This judgement shows that Louth County Council had done

their job correctly, had all their paperwork correct and that An Bord Pleanala had the correct documentation to make an informed decision. Of course citizens have a right to due process and the High Court has ruled definitively. I think the fairest thing is for the bypass to proceed now.”

“I will keep fighting until the N52 bypass is delivered. Transport Minister Jack Chambers visited Ardee this month to see for himself the daily congestion in the town and I will be contacting him today to discuss the next steps.”

‘Try

a Bike Day’

AS part of Bike Week 2024, the Louth Disability Cycling Club successfully hosted a ‘Try a Bike Day’ for special needs children at St. Helena’s Park in Dundalk.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from children of all abilities and ages, accompanied by their parents, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.

The park was bustling with excitement as kids explored a variety of state-of-the-art specialised trikes, trishaws, and bikes designed specifically for special needs riders.

The specialised equipment, provided by the Louth Disability Cycling Club, allowed every child to experience the joy and freedom of cycling, many for the first time.

A team of dedicated volun-

teers was on hand throughout the day, providing spins around the park and offering support to ensure that every participant had a safe and enjoyable experience. Their enthusiasm and commitment were evident, as they guided the children with patience and care, making the event a memorable one for all involved.

The event also featured a selection of refreshments thanks to Last Lap Coffee,, adding to the festive atmosphere. Families took the opportunity to socialise, share experiences, and enjoy the beautiful weather, which complemented the day’s activities perfectly.

In addition to the cycling activities, the club used the event to call for volunteer bike pilots to

New regulations for e-scooters and e-bikes come into force

NEW regulations under the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023 for e-scooters and e-bikes/e-mopeds were introduced into Irish legislation on Monday (20th May).

The regulations will layout the rules of the road for people choosing to use light electric vehicles which will be enforceable under Irish law.

A public information campaign outlining how these vehicles can be enjoyed and used safely on our roads will roll out from commencement day. The Gardaí and Road Safety Authority have been involved in the development of these regulations from the start and An Garda Síochána will be responsible for their enforcement.

E-scooters and e-bikes are an increasing feature in all cities, towns and villages in Ireland. The introduction of these new rules provides a legal basis for the range of vehicles available and the correct way of using them. This will help improve the safety for other road users as well as the vehicle users themselves.

The regulations set out clearly how different types of e-scooters and e-bikes can be used safely.

1. E-scooters with a maximum power output of 400 W or less, a maximum design speed of 20km/h and with a maximum weight of 25 kg – these are the regular e-scooters used by the majority of people - will be legal to use on public roads. Any e-scooter that goes over these parameters – more powerful and heavier e-scooters - will remain illegal. The new regulations stipulate that users of e-scooters must be 16 or over, because of safety concerns for young users and other road users. People over 16 will be able to use their e-scooters in cycle lanes and bus lanes but not footpaths or pedestrianised zones and are not al-

lowed to carry other passengers or goods.

2. E-bikes with a maximum power output of 250 W or less, a motor that cuts off once pedalling stops and has a maximum speed of 25km/hr – e-bikes that the vast majority of people use - will be treated the same as bicycles and will be permitted to use cycle lanes and bus lanes but will not be permitted for use on footpaths.

3. E-mopeds are powered cycles with pedals that have an electrical power-assist greater than e-bikes and are often capable of speeds in excess of even fast cyclists. Because of this additional power, all e-mopeds will require vehicle registration through Revenue and to have annual motor tax (€35 per annum). Users must be 16 years and above. There are two categories of e-mopeds:

(a) Those that have a maximum design speed of 25km/hr and a maximum power output of up to 1000W, and have an electric motor that cuts off when pedalling stops (L1e-A e mopeds). These vehicles will be permitted for use in cycle lanes and bus lanes but not on footpaths and users are legally required to wear a motorcycle helmet.

(b) Those that have a maximum design speed of up to 45km/hr and a maximum power output of 4000W (L1e-B e-mopeds). L1e-B e-mopeds can have a motor that cuts off when pedalling stops (pedal-assist) or can be powered by its motor alone, called throttle e-mopeds. Both pedal-assist and throttle e-mopeds under the L1e-B category, will require a Category AM driver’s licence. Additionally, throttle e-mopeds will require insurance. Both L1e-B mopeds will not be permitted to use cycle lanes, bus lanes, footpaths or pedestrianised zones and users are legally required to wear a motorcycle helmet.

Commenting on the imminent commencement, Minister Ryan said:

“These regulations, which are just one part of the comprehensive Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023, will help make our roads safer for all road users and give legal certainty to those who are choosing to get around on new forms of mobility.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen more and more e-scooter and e-bikes on our roads. Since they first appeared, many have developed and have become more powerful and these regulations set out clearly how they can all be used in our evolving transport landscape, safely and with respect for other road users, in particular those most vulnerable on our roads like pedestrians and cyclists. They will also help future-proof Ireland’s regulatory system to ensure that we can adapt to new technologies as they continue to emerge.

I hope these provisions will also give confidence to more people to choose new ways to travel that help them avoid congestion and gridlock. They will also contribute to freeing up road space, which in turn means that we can allocate more space to provide improved, faster and more frequent public transport and walking and cycling infrastructure for everyone.”

Minister Chambers said:

“I welcome the publication of the regulations for e-scooters and e-bikes which will bring clarity for road users, ensuring greater safety on our roads. More people are choosing these types of vehicles to get around cities, towns, and villages all over our country and it is essential we have a proper system of regulation and technical requirements for e-scooters.

Oriel Windfarm to lodge planning application this week

IN a key milestone in the plan to deliver one of the first commercial scale offshore wind farms in Ireland, Oriel Windfarm will lodge a planning application with An Bord Pleanála (ABP) later this week for its proposed offshore wind farm in the North Irish Sea.

The Oriel wind farm project will be located off the north Co Louth coast and will comprise 25 wind turbines, with a combined generating capacity of up to 375 megawatts (MW), which is the equivalent of the energy needed to power about 300,000 homes, reducing the country’s carbon emissions and its reliance on imported fossil fuels.

The planning application, which is being lodged directly with An Bord Pleanála, also includes the construction of offshore and onshore electricity substations, and all of the necessary submarine and underground cables that are required for the opera-

tion of the proposed new green energy project.

Oriel, which is being developed by JERA Nex through its wholly owned subsidiary Parkwind, and ESB, was one of the first Irish offshore wind farms to be planned.

“This is a hugely significant moment, not just for Oriel and for the Northeast region, but for the entire Irish energy sector and the wider Irish economy,” said Garrett Connell, Parkwind Country Manager for Ireland.

“We have been working on making Oriel wind farm a reality for nearly 20 years and a huge amount of work has been completed to get to this key project milestone. Throughout this time, we have engaged and consulted with local communities and other stakeholders on many occasions, and we would encourage them to participate in this planning process, and make their views known to An Bord

Pleanála,” Mr Connell added.

The planning process is expected to take up to 12 months. If planning is granted, construction of the Oriel wind farm could begin in 2026, with the wind farm potentially becoming operational in 2028. Based on these timelines, Oriel would become Ireland’s first operational commercial scale offshore wind farm.

The final design of the project has been based on a series of detailed scientific studies, carried out over many years, coupled with consultation with local and national stakeholders. The planning application including an Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) and a Natura Impact Statement (NIS). These will be made available online at www.orielwindfarmmarineplanning.ie after the application has been lodged this Friday, May 24th. Copies of the application and all sup-

Local dance students to represent Ireland at Dance World Cup this summer

FIVE talented students from Blackrock & Newry Dance Theatre Arts have been selected to represent Team Ireland at the prestigious Dance World Cup in Prague this summer.

Blackrock (BDTA) & Newry Dance Theatre Arts (NDTA) is a cross border dance school run by Catherine Hughes and her business partner, Danielle HughesQuinn.

According to Catherine, a PE teacher at St Paul’s in Bessbrook,

they initially set up the dance school in Newry and later opened a sister company in Blackrock.

“We opened the dance school in Blackrock-Haggardstown last year and run classes on Saturdays. We also plan to do a summer camp this summer,” said Catherine.

“Dundalk is only up the road from Newry so we have a lot of students travelling to us; students from Carlingford and Omeath.

“We do ballet, hiphop, acrobatic arts, contemporary, jazz,

singing and speech and drama. These five girls have really excelled this year competitively in solo and dance routines.”

The five dancers will perform in seven different routines representing Team Ireland at the prestigious Dance World Cup in Prague this summer.

The five dancers include Caithlin Spencer, Fianna McShane, Leah Campbell, Isla Byrne, and Cadhla Gribben.

“We are fundraising on a GoFundMe page to help raise money for the five dancers’

costs of travelling to Prague,” said Catherine.

“The tracksuits alone were around €150 each per child; there is also the hotel accommodation; flights and entry fee et cetera. We are aiming to raise €12,000.

“We fly out on Thursday, June 27 and the competition runs right through to Saturday, 6 July. Caithlin Spencer will kick off the competition.”

Dealgan Boxing Club showcase talent at Marian Park 65th anniversary celebrations

DEALGAN Boxing Club showcased some young talent at the club on Friday last as part of the ongoing celebrations of Marian Park’s 65th anniversary.

Dealgan Boxing Club Senior Coach Anto Donnelly told the Dundalk Leader that he has been with the club as a coach for 31 years.

“The club celebrated it’s 85th anniversary last year and Marian Park is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year,” said Anto.

“We decided to put on a show to mark the occasion. I started boxing when I was 14-years-old with my uncle.

“When I was older, I joined the army and then I got married. I was boxing for Crumlin and the Defence Forces.”

Anto added: “It’s hard to imagine a 23-year-old taking over the administration of a club today.

“At the time, the club was in a prefab. It was old school, rat-infested; there were no proper toilets, dressing rooms and the roof was falling in.

“We approached the owners, the Catholic Church and offered to fix it up and insure it and look after it.”

He continued: “But shortly afterwards, it was put up for sale. We approached a bank and thankfully, secured enough money to buy it.

“People do not realise what boxing clubs do in the community. We have 70-80 young people training here now and we also do adult keep-fit classes.

“We would like to thank the residents for their support over the years. It’s a welcoming establishment. Most people don’t see what it does for the community.”

World Africa Day to be celebrated in Louth for the third time

THE African community in Louth is set to celebrate ‘Africa Day’ this Sunday (26th May) at the Geraldines GAA hall in Haggardstown. The event will take place between 4-7pm and all are welcome.

The celebration of African culture is being organised by the African Culture Centre, Ireland and the aim is to showcase the rich culture, diversity, and vibrancy of Africa.

Africa Day is an important day for Africans across the world and the African community in Louth is no exception. This year’s celebrations which promises to be bigger and better will feature a range of activities, including African music, art exhibitions, African Dance, African menu, socialising, African Drama and much more.

African Culture Day was held in Dundalk Youth Centre last year.

“A lot of hard work has gone into putting on this event and it is being held to celebrate the links between Irish and African culture and to promote African heritage. The events will feature a wide variety of African music, including traditional and contemporary styles such as Afrobeat, highlife, and soukous. There will also be dance performances, showcasing the different

styles and techniques of African dance, from the energetic moves of West African dances to the graceful steps of South African dances.

“There will be an opportunity to sample some of the delicious and diverse cuisine of Africa. there will be market stalls where you can purchase unique African crafts, clothing, and accessories,” stated Adebolu.

“Our dream is to eventually have a culture centre in Dundalk where people can come in and find out more about Dundalka nd what’s go-

ing on. A place to help newcomers to settle into their new community. We also want to change the perception some people have when they see an African man or woman walking down the street. Some people think negatively when they see us from afar but we are just the same as them and we hope events like this will help unite us all,” he added.

The event is part of a nationwide celebration of Africa Day, which will see events taking place in cities and towns across Ireland.

Launch of Louthest Laugh

LOCAL comedians Shinanne Higgins and Elizabeth Redmond are launching a comedy competition called The Louthest Laugh on Friday, May 31.

Shinanne, aged 41, from Pearse Park and Elizabeth from Haggardstown are organising the event with the Northeast Comedy Collective (NECC).

They are organising The Louthest Laugh alongside Drogheda women Ellen O’Reilly and Jess Collins.

NECC was set up by the four local female comedians: Shinanne Higgins, Elizabeth Redmond, Ellen O’Reilly and Jess Collins to promote comedy in the area.

Comedians from around Ireland will take to the stage and compete to win the opportunity to perform at Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

“I will be co-running three shows each day in Edinburgh Fringe, where a mix of the best Irish comedians perform daily,” said Shinanne.

“The winner will be able to perform with a plethora of well-known Irish acts and will also win flights and accommodation.

“We know that the costs of performing can inhibit many deserving comedians from reaching their dream of performing at the Fringe.”

She added: “I first performed at Edinburgh in 2023 on the same show. I was

invited back to co-run the show in 2023.

“This year I will be back to co-run the mixed bill shows and I am also bringing my first solo show ‘10 Things They Hate About Me’ to the festival.

“I know how important it

is to get your foot in the door at events like the Fringe, so I am delighted to be able to offer this wonderful, and potentially life-changing prize to the winner.”

The competition will be held in The Tipsy Cow in Dundalk and Odd Mollies in Drogheda.

The dates for the shows are as follows:

Dundalk: 31 May, 21 June, 5 July

Drogheda 14 June, 12 July and the final on 19 July

“We will also have some huge headline acts making guest performances on the night,” said Shinanne.

“Audiences will not only get to see the fresh, new faces of Irish comedy, but will also have a big headliner take to the stage each night, including the hilarious, Emma Doran.”

Tickets are on sale now for the first heat of the competition with our headliner, the award winning comedian and star of Bridget and Eamon, Edwin Sammon. https://www.eventbrite. ie/e/the-louthest-laugh-tickets-909971488217?aff=ebds hpsearchautocomplete&ke ep_tld=1

My wonderful Nephew on his 13th Heavenly Birthday

I’m sending a dove to Heaven

With a parcel on his wings

Be careful when you open it

Its full of beautiful things.

Inside is a million kisses

Wrapped with a million hugs

To say how much I miss you

And send you all my love.

I hold you deep within my heart

And there you will remain

To walk beside me in my life

Until we meet again.

We thought of you with love today

But that is nothing new

We thought of you yesterday

And the day before that too.

We think of you in silence

And often speak your name

All we have are memories

And your picture in a frame.

Your memory is a keepsake

With which we will never part God has you in his keeping

We have you in our hearts.

PRAYER TO SAINT JUDE

Saint Jude, glorious Apostle, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor has caused thee to be forgotten by many, But the Church honours and invokes thee universally as the patron of hopeless cases – of matters despaired off. Pray for me who am so miserable, make use, I implore thee, of that particular privilege accorded to thee, to bring visible and speedy Help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolations and succour of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, particularly (here make your request) and that I may bless God with thee and all the Elect throughout eternity. I promise thee O blessed Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favour, and I will never cease to honour thee as my special and powerful patron And do all in my power to encourage devotion to thee. Amen. St Jude pray for us. And for all who invoke thy aid St Jude, help of the hopeless, aid me in my distress. Pray for us that we may be admitted into the Company of the blessed, to rejoice in the presence of God forever. D.W.

Shock at passing of very popular Dundalk Barman

ONE of Dundalk’s most popular barmen, Aaron Callan, known as AC to his many friends, died suddenly at his home in Knockbridge in the early hours of Monday morning.

The 44 year old, formerly of Avondale Park, owned Callans Bar on Church Street alongside his wife Michelle. The popular couple took over the premises formerly known as Sean’s Tavern in 2022 and the Church Street bar has proved very popular with patrons since. Aaron was from the well known and popular Callan family in Dundalk with his grandfather Francie a well known player for Dundalk FC during he 1950’s and 60’s.

Aaron was a past-pupil of St. Mary’s College in Dundalk before moving to London. He returned to his home town where he worked in PayPal before meeting the love of his life Michelle who he featured with on RTE’s Don’t

The late Aaron Callan.

Tell The Bride. The couple got married in 2015 and would later start a business together when they opened Callan’s Bar. A quick look through the condolences page on RIP.ie will attest to how popular AC was with a smile or a bit of craic never too far away when he was around. A very talented snooker and pool
