THE retail sector in Dundalk have overwhelmingly got behind a massive fundraiser by The Townhouse Bar and Restaurant for local toddler Daithi McCann who has been diagnosed with a rare genetic syndrome. Over 40 local businesses have got behind the initiative by donating prizes for the fundraiser which will be won by one lucky person this Thursday. Dáithí from Little Mills has Wiedemann Steiner syndrome, a disorder that affects less than 1,000 individuals globally. “Daithi will be 16 months old in the first week of December. He has been in hospital since he was born,” said Daithi’s mother, Bronagh. “He first came home to us when he was 14 months old. He was home just four weeks from Crumlin when he ended up in the Lourdes for two weeks. “He came back home just a couple of days ago. Since Daithi was born it’s been an absolute rollercoaster.” Continued on Page 2

THE streets of Dundalk were packed last Friday night with local families who turned out despite the rain for the Frostival Winter Festival. The annual festival took place on Friday, 17th and Saturday, 18th November, marking the start of the festive

season. Sponsored by Dundalk Credit Union, Frostival Winter Festival, had a jam-packed schedule of events with lots for the family to enjoy. The Carnival of Light parade was an awe-inspiring winter fairytale come to life. There was also an annual Christmas Tree lighting cer-

emony and street illuminations. Martin McElligott, Town Centre Commercial Manager told the Dundalk Leader that he feels Friday was a “very successful night”. “It was a very wet night but it was successful. The people who attended should be commended,” he said.

“It’s a testament to how popular the Frostival Winter Festival has become that people are willing to wait in the rain. Santa turned on the Christmas tree lights and the looks on the kids faces as they were staring up at it.” Martin added: “It was lovely to see the smiles on the kids faces and

that’s what it’s all about at this time of year. “The Parade of Light was fantastic. It’s a company we hire in but theatrically there is a huge local presence too. “Funky Feet, Jock McArdle, St Patrick’s Scout Group, MAD Youth Theatre and Dundalk Credit Union staff were all present.”

Zone were back at Market Square both days, adding to the festive cheer.

From Page 1 Bronagh added: “Daithi has a lot of complex medical needs even though to look at him he’s perfect; he’s gorgeous. “He has a lot of complex needs and we go through a lot of worry and stress. He’s in great form at the moment because he’s well hydrated after being in the Lourdes. “He’s constantly nauseous because it’s hard for him stay properly hydrated. Sadly, my mother passed away suddenly two weeks ago. She loved Daithi so much. It’s been a very emotional time.” Bronagh Duffy with her son Daithí.

93-year-old woman recovering at home after four hour ambulance wait

A 93-year-old woman is recovering this week after she waited for almost four hours for an ambulance at her Dundalk home earlier this month, while lying on the floor with a fractured pelvis. More details about the woman’s ordeal have been revealed by Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú who highlighted the case at his party’s

Ard Fhéis recently and last week contacted the HSE seeking answers about why the woman had to wait so long ‘in abject pain’. Deputy Ó Murchú said he had been contacted by the woman’s son, who outlined to him the sequence of events that happened on the evening of November 9 at his mother’s home which is in the

south of the town. The Dundalk TD said: ‘ This happened on Friday November 10 2023 where a 93-yearold woman waited from 5.20pm to 9.05pm for an ambulance to come to help her. ‘Her son told me how his mother fell at her home and was unable to move. She was in a lot of pain and an ambulance was called.

‘When the National Ambulance Service (NAS) was initially contacted at 5.20pm, dispatch said they would come as quickly as possible. ‘At around 6pm, dispatch contacted the family again and said they had nothing available. They were told this woman was in agony and was on the ground. ‘Half an hour later, at

6:30pm, the family contacted dispatch again and were told that the ambulance allocated to this call was diverted to a more serious call. ‘At 7.15pm, dispatch called back and said there was still no ambulance. At 8.40pm, the family contacted dispatch once more and were again advised there were no ambulances available, but the

next one was 18 minutes away. ‘The ambulance arrived at 9.05pm and the woman was brought to the Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda after a diagnosis of a fractured pelvis and a kidney infection. The ambulance crew were very kind and helpful when they arrived and took great care of her’. Deputy Ó Murchú said this was ‘an horrendous ordeal’ for the 93-year-old woman and for her family, who were frantically trying to get her help for a serious and painful injury. She remained lying on the ground because she couldn’t be moved for nearly four hours. ‘She was understandably very afraid, and in so much pain. I

Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú. have written to the HSE about the matter and they have confirmed to me that they are investigating. ‘While the pressures on ambulance crews are understood, this is a dreadful state of affairs

and the family needs answers as to why their mother was left in this state for hours, while living just a few kilometres from the ambulance station at the Louth County Hospital’.

LOUTH County Council is delighted to announce an exhibition on the history of women’s football in Ireland will be launched at the County Museum, Dundalk on Saturday, November 18th. Entitled From Small Acorns … the exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of the Stade de Reims Women’s football club tour of Ireland. Over the course of a fortnight in August 1973, the French side played a number of women’s invitational sides throughout Ireland, including Dublin, Waterford, Limerick and Oriel Park. This tour played a significant role in establishing the women’s game in Ireland. Louth County Council’s Museum Curator, Brian Walsh, explained that the exhibition is aiming to celebrate and capture the passion and enthusiasm that underpins football. He said: “The growth and interest in women’s football today is a

direct consequence not only of this tour but also the efforts of so many people – be they players or administrators alike - who played and organized matches and competitions in a very different Ireland culturally, socially and technologically.” He added: “This is social history at its finest. It is a story with a cast of thousands, with each person making a contribution, it may be a story that is 50 years in the making but it is humbling and invigorating to meet the players and coaches of the time talk about their memories of the time. As important is the trailblazing role that people from County Louth played in developing the game be they, Paula Gorham (FAI Hall of Fame inductee 2021) or Kevin and Nan Gaynor who set up the Dundalk Ladies team and were heavily involved in the development of the game in Ireland.” The exhibition documents

the tour as well as the development of subsequent links to other French sides culminating in the first international between France and the Republic of Ireland. Among the notable items for display include two jerseys from the matches against Stade de Reims; Paula Gorham’s international cap, a team pennant as well a programme and promotional posters for the tour. The exhibition will be launched by Paula Gorham, former Dundalk F.C and Ireland women’s team player, and will be attended by An Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr. Paula Butterly. It will open to the public on Saturday November 18th and will run to mid-January. Admission is free. For further information contact the County Museum at 042 9392 999.

Dundalk Outcomers fundraiser for Storm Babet flood victims THE Dundalk-based Outcomers’ youth service and volunteers are participating in an ongoing fundraiser to provide relief to flood victims in Ireland. According to an Outcomers’ spokesperson, Storm Babet caused extreme flooding in Cork, West Waterford and more. “Members of the community experienced damaged houses, cars, properties and businesses,” she said. “Our youth service decided to do a fundraiser to try and raise some funds to help those affected, as many

people are still unable to stay in their homes, repair damage or be compensated for things such as replacing property. “All funds raised will be donated to the Irish Red Cross Storm Babet Appeal. Throughout November, each participant is walking towards a goal of 80km to raise money. We are very proud of them for deciding they wanted to take action to help.” She added: “We had a chat with the young people about the floods in Louth and raising money.

“For context they had been planning this fundraiser for about a week before the Louth floods happened, so we raised it and asked what they wanted to do.

“They chose to go with the IRC flood appeal due to them being a charity and well recognised nationally, and because of their history in fundraising during humanitarian crisis, so said if a national fundraising appeal is organised for Louth we would look at doing something for this too.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dundalk FC supporters are very unhappy

WE WANT TO HEAR IT GOT A Phone: 0429320888 STORY? Email: editorial@dundalkleader.com

Dear Editor, The despicable decision by Dundalk to release Patrick Hoban with a year on his contract has shell shocked all Dundalk supporters. It is a callous, shabby way to treat an iconic club legend. The record goal scorer in the club’s history with 150 goals and who always gave 110% on the pitch. To be cast aside in a shameful manner, clearly shows a club without principle or ambition. The question on all fans lips is why and who made the decision? To date, the Board are sticking to their policy of monastic silence. This is treating the supporters with contempt. It should be remembered that the club doesn’t belong to the Direc-

tors alone-it belongs to the supporters and the town. There are managers in the LOI rubbing their hands with glee, anticipating signing a prolific goalscorer. Their fans will enjoy mocking Dundalk fans with their chants ‘Can we buy your players?” They will be laughing their heads off at the stupidity of this move. It’s a pity there isn’t more home games in the league. The board would have the opportunity to mingle with the fans and be aware of their palpable anger and pent up frustrations at losing Hoban to another rival. Then again, engaging with the fans is not the boards forte- with the honorable exception of Andy Connolly. Sadly, this cannot be said of his fellow board

members whose presence at home games is conspicuous by their absence. This gives the impression that they have little interest in the teams fortunes. The rumour mill is in full swing with talk of new investors on the horizon. Hopefully, any new investor will not be a boardroom bean counter. Nor does the club want or need some charlatan waving a cheque book and sprinkling fairytale dust in the fans’ eyes. What the club needs from new investors is someone with the following priorities: 1—Reverse the decision on Hoban and offer him a three year extension on his contract. 2—An enhanced budget to Stephen O’Donnell (ASAP).

3—A vision for the club and a plan to implement it. 4—Frequent communication with the local media and supporters. 5—Two members of the supporters club to sit on the board in an advisory capacity. The forced departure of Patrick Hoban has left the fans bitter and fearful for the future. His loyalty and the loyalty of the fans has been betrayed. Loyalty is a two way street. The betrayed can always take back that loyalty with their feet. To prevent that scenario, that board knows what they have to do. Yours, Nicholas McCourt, Avenue Road, Dundalk.

Age is not taking its ‘Toal’ on speedy Declan Dundalk Leader 22nd November 2023

By Paul Byrne DECLAN Toal cemented his growing reputation on the Master’s circuit with a magnificent victory at the British Irish Masters Cross Country 8k in Glasgow on November 11th. Declan from Priorland Gardens in Dundalk is having a year to remember having started 2023 off with a sensational gold medal at the World Masters Championships in Poland. Declan, part of the local North East Runners team, has seen his running times plummet since joining renowned athletics coach Feidhlim Murphy who trains some of Ireland’s best athletes in the Dublin Track Club. Declan’s competitors in Glasgow must have been worried prior to the race when they saw the Dundalk man grinning from ear to ear having walked the course ahead of the race. According to Declan he knew after inspecting the course that he

Declan won the British & Irish Masters Cross Country 8k. was in with a great chance of victory. “I brought my daughter Hannah and we walked the course and I had a big smile on my face as I knew the course was just made for

me,” stated Declan. “I finished 6th at the home internationals in Dublin last year and ran really poorly so I was really determined to put that right. I took it relatively easy for the first 2k but af-

ter that I took the lead and went hard especially down the hills and never let that lead go. It was extra special having my fifteen year old daughter Hannah there to cheer me home and I was delighted to be able to make her proud as it was her first time abroad watching me in action,” he added. “Jim Gonnelly and the rest of the North East Runners have been brilliant in helping me improve and since starting extra training with Feidhlim Kelly at the Dublin Track Club things have just started to really improve very quickly. I am 52 years old and unbelievably I’m getting quicker. I haven’t been injured in two years and I’m absolutely loving my running at the moment. I will finish the year looking to run quick times at the Annagassan 10k this weekend and then the Jingle Bells 5k in the Phoenix Park. I will take a wee break then before gearing up for the European Masters in Poland,” con-

DUNDALK Institute of Technology (DkIT) were absolutely delighted to officially open their new state of the art Science building on November 16th and were thrilled to be granted permission to name it after an inspirational Northern Irish woman, Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell who was born in Lurgan, Northern Ireland. The Institute were even more excited when Professor Bell Burnell agreed to attend on the day along with Simon Harris

T.D., Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. Professor Bell Burnell is an astrophysicist who, as a postgraduate student in Cambridge University, discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967. This discovery eventually earned the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974. At the time of the Nobel Prize announcement, Jocelyn Bell Burnell was not named, and the award went to her PhD supervisors. Several

prominent scientists protested the omission of Bell Burnell, though Jocelyn always maintained that the prize was presented appropriately given her student status. Earlier this year DkIT asked staff to nominate names for their new Science building. It was decided to call the building in honour of Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell, due to her commitment to excellence in science and her belief in providing accessible education.

cluded Declan. Declan did indeed run quickly in Annagassan winning the race in 32:32 despite running into a strong headwind in the latter stages of the course. He will wrap up a glorious 2023 with an attempt to run sub 15 minutes at the Jingle Bell 5k in the Phoenix Park on the 2nd of December. Declan’s numerous victories this year are all the more remarkable given the fact he only returned to the sport seven years ago having giving up running at 23 due to illness. Declan, a son of Clan na Gael legend, Leslie Toal returned to the running track in his mid forties when his children joined St Gerard’s AC and he was asked to help out in a coaching role. From there he joined the North East Runners and that competitive spirit that burned so brightly in his youth returned with a vengeance as Declan quickly re-established himself as one of the most talented runners in the country.

AN elderly pensioner in Dundalk has expressed grave concerns over the fact her Electric Ireland account has been compromised with all of her details stolen by a person working on behalf of the energy company. The pensioner was one of approximately 8000 people around Ireland who received letters recently from Electric Ireland letting them know that their account details had been stolen. The company supplies electricity, gas and energy services to over 1.2 million households and 95,000 businesses in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. ceived the letter telling me that my account details had been compromised. I rang a number giving to me in the letter and got talking to somebody in Electric Ireland but I can’t say I was reassured after talking to them. I’m in my mid 70’s and I’m sure there are others in the same boat as me who have their few bob in the bank and are afraid that it will be stolen from me,” stated the pensioner. “I don’t need the stress of having to change bank accounts or look for a new energy company. And even if people wanted to leave Electric Ireland it’s not really an option for most as a number of people are in credit thanks to the government ESB Credits and they would lose that if they left,” she added. Electric Ireland confirmed that approximately 8000 customer accounts had been compromised and said they are treating the matter very seriously. Electric Ireland is aware that an employee of a company working on our behalf may have inappropriately accessed a small proportion of our 1.1m residential customer accounts leading to the

potential misuse of personal and financial information. Our investigations have established that approximately 8,000 customer accounts may have been compromised. Electric Ireland has written to all potentially impacted customers to make them aware of the issue and provide advice and instructions on what actions to take to mitigate against the risk of potential financial fraud. Customers who have not received a letter from Electric Ireland do not need to take any action. This issue is currently under investigation and Electric Ireland is liaising with An Garda Síochána and the Data Protection Commissioner, and as such the details of this case must remain confidential. Electric Ireland fully appreciates the gravity of this issue and the concern and inconvenience it will create for those affected customers. Customers affected by this issue, who may have experienced any fraudulent activity on their financial accounts in relation to data they gave to Electric Ireland, have been asked to contact the company directly. Electric Ireland will inform An Garda Síochána who are managing this investigation. Customers are also advised to contact their bank.

Dundalk Leader 22nd November 2023

LOCAL poet Seán Brannigan launches his brand new book of poetry entitled ‘Oriel Obsevations 2’ tomorrow evening at 7:30pm in the Oriel Centre, Dundalk Gaol. This will be Seán’s fourth collection of poems having previously released A Silver Lining in 1987, An Owl Calls in 2010 and Oriel Observations last year.

former holder of the esteemed Fiddler of Oriel accolade.

Seán will do some readings, and light refreshments will be available. Free Admission.

The book is available to buy in Central News on Clanbrassil St and Devenney Office Supplies on Crowe St. Below is a poem entitled Autumn Dawn taken from Oriel Observations 2.

His latest collection has 52 pieces of poetry and almost all of them are inspired by the places and people of his hometown of Dundalk. Seán who is a child of the Fair Green has nothing but happy memories of growing up in that part of town and much of his poetry features memories of his experiences in town down through the years.

AUTUMN DAWN

The book contains poems with wide ranging topics, local, national, international, conflicts, love, humour, depression, Northern Ireland, Covid, etc from the pen of Seán Brannigan. The day President Kennedy was shot THE 22nd of November is the 60th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas in 1963. Local poet Noel Sharkey sent us in a poem appropriate for the occasion, cataclysmic as these events were at the time. He had visited Ireland the previous June and his murder was a defining event in the lives of everyone who was old enough to have experienced the news of his killing. To this day everyone can recall where they were at that time. Charles Mitchell was the news announcer on Telefís Eireann as it was then. Officer J.D. Tippet was the police officer shot by Lee Harvey Oswald, who then took refuge in a Dallas cinema before being arrested. Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as new President as the Presidential party flew out of Dallas, bringing J.F.K’s body back to Washington for the state funeral.

THE DAY PRESIDENT KENNEDY WAS SHOT (22nd November, 1963)

It was a Friday evening in our house, not long after tea; My parents and I were sitting in front of the T.V., When the screen we were watching suddenly went dead And newscaster Charles Mitchell appeared, and then said That an attempt had been made on President Kennedy’s life While he’s been visiting Dallas today with his wife He’d been shot while traveling through the city by car And there was no further news on his condition thus far. The programme we’d been watching didn’t resume And we sat there expectantly in our small sitting room Until Charles Mitchell

reappeared and solemnly said That U.S. news had stated that President Kennedy was dead. A man named Oswald had been charged with the crime (He would be gunned down himself in two day’s time.) Lyndon Johnson had had been sworn in as President While travelling by plane, And in Dallas a young police officer had also been slain. We sat there receiving these images over the air A microcosm of what was happening in homes everywhere. These are things I’ll always remember, incidents I never forgot, About that fateful day in November, When President Kennedy Was shot. —Noel Sharkey.
