Louth man Brendan Murphy has appealed to the Minister for Justice Helen McEntee to issue visa concessions as soon as possible so he and his family can leave Ukraine amid rising tensions in the country with Russia threatening to invade. Brendan, originally from Omeath, just below the Windy Gap, left Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day 2020 just as the pandemic arrived, and has been living in Kiev ever since. The businessman works as an international consultant and his role includes strengthening ties between businesses in Ireland and Ukraine. He has been a regular visitor to Ukraine over the past twenty years and is married to Marina, a Ukrainian native. Because of the pandemic he has been unable to return to Ireland over the past two years due to fears of being unable to return to Ukraine due to borders
closing because of COVID. With tensions between Russia and Ukraine seemingly deteriorating by the day Brendan is now eager to return to Ireland with his wife Marina, her daughter Christina and Christina’s three-yearold child. He is also worried about Marina’s elderly mother and does not want to leave her behind with the threat of war imminent. The Irish ambassador in the Ukraine has urged all Irish people to leave the country immediately but Brendan is unable to as it would mean having to leave his family behind. As it stands Ireland is the only EU country that does not allow visa free access for Ukrainians and according to Brendan, he has personally written to Minister for Justice Helen McEntee pleading with her to introduce a 90day visa-free arrangement for those who wish to flee Ukraine in the event of a Russian invasion. From Page 1 “I have applied for a visa for myself and my family which is a long and arduous process involving translators and lots of paperwork. My appointment to get one of the documents stamped for my visa was cancelled at short notice and I have been told that it will take
another month for that document to be ready. And that’s only a small part of the application process. The UK have introduced temporary visa concessions and as it stands Ireland are the only country that does not allow visa free access for Ukrainians. I could go home myself but what sort of a man
would I be to leave my wife and family in a country that is potentially on the brink of war. “I have pleaded with Minister McEntee to make Ireland visa free and allow people with biometric passports to travel to Ireland and given the recent warnings by the Irish ambassador
telling all Irish citizens to leave immediately I have asked her to get this done as soon as possible,” stated Brendan. Although Brendan is eager to leave Kiev and get back to Ireland, he says he is still relatively calm about the situation and refuses to panic amid growing ten-
sions between Russia and Ukraine. “The Ukrainians are very like the Irish in many ways and there is a feeling of calm in the city I believe. They are going about their business as normal, and the supermarkets are still well stocked with food so seeing everybody relatively relaxed I
suppose gives me hope that things might not be as bad as what is being predicted. I am not stupid though and I know that there is a possibility that things could get ugly so that is why I want this visa issue sorted out as quickly as possible so we can leave immediately if needs be,” explained Brendan.
is hungry to emulate his older sibling’s success in the sport. Jordan and Scott’s dad, Kevin, is also an accomplished power lifter and he is delighted to see a new addition to the family powerlifting competition scene. “Scott has turned out to be a wee beast,” stated Kevin. “He idolises his older brother Jordan and he’s been watching him powerlift for years and last year he started training with Jordan and he took to it like a duck to water. He is freakishly strong for his age and he now the youngest to enter a competition in the country. He was like a wee celebrity at the competition we were at in Limerick last week and people were amazed
at what he was lifting. He was up against boys two and three years older than him and he was beating them all,” explained Kevin. “He absolutely loves the buzz of competitions and he is currently training with his brother three nights a week in ‘Jay’s Dungeon’ which is Jordan’s home gym. The two boys have been very lucky to have had Barry Smith from the Oak Gym guiding them and giving them advice and he’s been brilliant for their development. Scott’s next competition is in March at the national full power championships and then training will begin for the world championships which take place in Manchester in September.

Scott Holland looks like following in his big brothers’ footsteps in the ultra-competitive world of powerlifting. The twelve-year-old became the youngest person ever to compete in an Irish powerlifting competition when he competed in Limerick earlier this month in the U15 T1 category. Scott, from Cuchulainn’s Terrace just off the Castletown Road, amazed onlookers at the competition with his strength and ended up setting seven new national records with a best bench of 45kg and a massive 90kg deadlift. The powerful De La Salle Primary student also managed to qualify for the U15 Irish powerlifting national team.

Scott Holland is making huge strides in the world of powerlifting. Scott, is the younger brother of the very talented powerlifter Jordan Holland who has been breaking records for a number of years at national level. The talented 20-yearold burst on to the international weightlifting
scene three years ago when he became the first teenager in 56 years to win both the senior and under 18 titles at the World Championships in Malta. Since then he has routinely been breaking world records in competition and last
July at the AIPO Nationals in Limerick he broke his nineteenth world record when he squatted 240.5kg, benched 110kg and deadlifted 217.5kg for a total of 568kg. Jordan’s success has obviously rubbed off on his younger brother who
Minister announces initiatives to support remote working
The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has announced a number of major new initiatives that will support Remote Working. For the first time, workers will now be able to book office or desk space in their local hub through a new mobile app called Connected Hubs. Minister Humphreys also announced €5 million in funding, through the Connected Hubs 2022 Call, which will be used to build capacity and enhance existing Remote Working facilities. These initiatives will be un-
derpinned by a major new National Awareness Campaign, designed to promote the many benefits of choosing your local hub for your working day. The Awareness Campaign will be run by the Department of Rural and Community Development with the support of the Western Development Commission (WDC). Minister Humphreys also revealed today that the number of Remote Working facilities on the Connected Hubs Network will exceed 200 this week. This represents over half of the 400 hubs pledged as part of Our Rural Future,
the Government’s landmark rural development policy. Announcing the series of initiatives at the Mill Enterprise Centre in Drogheda, Co Louth, Minister Humphreys said: “If COVID-19 has taught us one thing – it’s that the benefits of Remote Working are huge. Less time spent commuting. A lower carbon footprint. More time spent with family and friends. But above all – a better quality of life. Over the past two years, we have embarked on a mission never seen before. My Department has invested €100million in the development of remote work-
ing facilities in our towns and villages nationwide. Across Ireland, we have taken many old and derelict buildings and re-purposed them into stateof-the-art Remote Working facilities. Former banks, cinemas, garda stations, convents and train stations have become local digital hubs. In addition we have provided funding to upgrade and enhance existing hub facilities. These are now part of a new network called ‘Connected Hubs’ – which is at the forefront of our efforts to make Remote Working a reality for tens of thousands of workers.”

Chick incubation project TEACHERS and pupils at a Dundalk primary school have been running a chick incubation project for the last few weeks. The project at Réalt na Mara School, Mill Street has generated a lot of excitement for staff and pupils alike. Some of the chicks hatched overnight on Thursday, 17th February. The school’s first hens and rooster arrived (imported from Monaghan) in term one of this school year. The hens were too young to lay but by January of this year staff and pupils were “overjoyed to see that a number of them had begun to lay eggs. A series of lessons followed and the children were taught about the life cycle of a hen/chick and the options of incubating eggs if the eggs are fertilised. At the end of January, the school set up its incubator in a prominent location in the school and began the hatching process for batch 1. Staff and pupils were “overjoyed” to see six of the clutch had hatched overnight on Thursday last. The chicks have been moved to a brooder box with a heating plate to keep them warm. The process will continue until the chicks are fully reared.
Junior Infants delighted as chicks hatch in Realt na Mara. “We have been busy here in Réalt na Mara School over the last number of months with a few very interesting projects,” said Réalt na Mara School teacher Síle Holland. “Our school garden has been developed and has transformed into a beautiful outdoor area for classes to visit and learn about planting.” She added: “This project has been financially supported by our Parents Association. We have a new hen enclosure as part of the school garden/outdoor learning area. “All classes love to visit the hens; they are a welcome addition to Réalt na Mara school life. “Following on from our hen enclosure, we have had a chick incubation project in place for the last few weeks.”
The school began construction of the garden in the summer of 2021 and installed the plant borders along a semi-walled garden area. A fully enclosed poultry run (15m x 5m) was added and some large 8 x 8 raised beds were constructed and planted with a variety of sensory plants. Ten vegetable raised beds were also constructed and filled with topsoil. These are due to be planted in spring 2022 by the pupils in the ten most senior classes. Principal of Réalt na Mara, Phil McCaul said: “It has been an amazing journey already and we are only at the outset of our adventure in connecting with nature. “Although I knew it would be an exciting project, I am bowled over by the engagement of adults and children alike.
“Visiting the animals has become a staple of the school day for many. Some children have a really special affinity with animals and this is absolutely beautiful to witness. “The incubation project has been phenomenal… the miracle of new life has happened in real time before the children’s very eyes. The value of that cannot be underestimated. I look forward to the many days of joy to come.” Mr McCaul added: “I want to thank the Parents Association for giving significant financial backing to the project. “They have begun a new school lotto fundraiser and it’s great to know that money raised goes directly into projects such as this for the betterment of the school experience of all whom pass through this school.”

Climb Slieve Foy for Sean and Roy Dundalk Leader 23rd February 2022
Paula Lavin Senior Manager of St Colmcille’s ladies and teacher in Coláiste Rís, is calling on the people of Louth and Meath to come out and climb the saddle of Slieve Foy for Seán Woods and Roy Taylor on Saturday April 2nd. Seán Woods and Roy Taylor are both living with Motor Neurone Disease and are wellknown figures within the community of Louth and afar. Seán Woods is known for his brilliance as a mechanic for over forty years and much loved in motor racing circles. The Dundalk man is an accomplished racing driver and former team owner, a role he was equally as successful in. Roy Taylor is no stranger to the limelight either for he represented Ireland in the Eurovision
Sean Woods and Roy Taylor. song contest in 1988 with his band Jump the Gun. He also released a song My New Dream alongside his son Terence which reached No1 in the iTunes charts in Ireland, a song aimed at raising awareness for MND and funds to aid research into the condition. On Saturday 12th February Seán, Roy and their families gathered at
St Joseph’s GFC to meet the men from St Josephs in Louth and the women from St Colmcille’s in Meath to come together in solidarity to support the climb for Seán and Roy. Seán, a proud club man of St Joseph’s both on and off the pitch was delighted to be back at his old club where they have vowed as a club to come out and support him and Roy on the
day. According to Paula Lavin who is helping to organise the fundraiser the main object of the exercise is to raise awareness of MND and to raise funds to support experts at Trinity College who are working on gaining a better understanding of the disease. “There are around 3040 people in the Louth/ Meath/North East with MND,” explained Paula. “Funds raised from the climb will go to support Research Motor Neurone at Trinity College where they are working on better understanding the causes of MND, finding better ways to diagnose patients quicker and more effectively, and delivering new effective treatments. A new prestigious research programme called Precision – ALS, fronted by
Professor Orla Hardiman at Trinity College will now focus on delivering these goals as we seek to end MND once and for all. With the public’s amazing support, we will be able to fund this world class research. One day soon, we will be able to get the right drug to the right patient at the right time and give much needed hope to those suffering from MND and their families,” stated the Colaiste Rís teacher. Lisa the wife of Roy Taylor said “it’s a life changing disease, it can only be described as a horror story from hell. It changes life completely not only for the sufferer, but also for the entire family. Every minute of every day is consumed by the incredible pain and suffering it causes. For the sufferer there is
unimaginable pain being trapped in a body that doesn’t function anymore, and for their loved one the deepest sadness and stress knowing with all the help you can give, this disease keeps pushing you further” It is Seán and Roy’s wish that all funds from this event go directly into Research. We hope we can achieve this by selling 500 tickets at 20 euro each, and raise 10k for Research Motor Neurone. All tickets are available online: sean-roy-climb-for-rmn. eventbrite.ie A committee of Paula Lavin, Maeve Yore and Lisa Mc Cabe was set up to organise the event and great work has been done already to ensure this day is a success for all involved. Jock Mc Ardle has also got involved and is a great
addition for he is an experienced guide and will be out with all his crew on the day leading us in the right direction. Thanks to all those who have registered and donated to the event so far and to Seamus at Anchor Tours who will provide free shuttle buses on the day, and to Richard and Jamie at print express for their kind donations of free posters. The family want to thank the HSE for their ongoing support and are overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of their local community and friends. They want to also acknowledge with gratitude the help of Garda Lisa McCabe Carlingford Garda Station, Jock McArdle and his Leaders, Louth Civil Defence and the Order of Malta
in Volunteering for this Research Motor Neurone Fundraising Walk on behalf of Seán and Roy. The organising committee are hoping the people of Louth can get behind this project and have stressed that the climb is about awareness and is suitable for all with fitness not a necessity. “We are asking that people and their communities sign up and register for the event, whether you end up going on the day or not, please buy a ticket as we all can make a difference here. This climb is about awareness of RMN, no level of fitness is required so let’s come together on Saturday April 2nd and make this a memorable day for Seán, Roy and their families,” they stated.

Hourly trains between Dublin and Belfast at peak times from next year Irish Rail is working on adding more trains to the Enterprise service to run hourly trains at peak times, as well as working towards a journey time of 90 minutes between Dublin and Belfast. In addition, head of Irish Rail, Jim Meade, responding to Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú, admitted there is no timeline on the introduction of a two or three day week rail ticket for workers who are only in the office part of the week. The Sinn Féin TD is a member of the Oireachtas Transport Committee and on Thursday, asked the Irish Rail boss about plans for an hourly train service between Dublin and Belfast. It had been indicated previously that it would be 2027 before the hourly service is running, but Mr Meade told
Ruairí Ó Murchú, TD.
Deputy Ó Murchú last week that Irish Rail are working with Translink in the North to acquire additional fleet with a view to having an extra train based in each city so that hourly services
could be run at peak morning and evening times. Mr Meade said: ‘There is a requirement to get people into Dublin earlier in the morning and get them home in the evening. We should be able to have this hourly peak service on from the back end of next year, with a view to having a full hourly service by 2026 or 2027. ‘We are also targeting a 90-minute journey time. We are still working out the detail of the new fleet and whether we electrify the line, what propulsion would be used, and we need to be looking at other options that aren’t diesel. ‘The SEUPB funding is not in place yet, but the two companies are funding some research into the specifications of the fleet so we won’t lose time on it’. The news on the par-
tial week rail ticket was not as good, however. Deputy Ó Murchú said the National Transport Authority (NTA) had been at the committee previously and had discussed the possibility of a ‘flexi-ticket’ but there were ‘technical difficulties’. The Louth TD asked that any and all options are explored, even on an interim basis, to get this up and running for commuters. He said: ‘Even if we have to go back to prehistoric times where people’s tickets are manually punched, we need to be doing whatever it takes’. Mr Meade said that while the NTA were ‘working hard’ on the issue, difficulties remained in sorting the ‘technical, revenue and taxation aspects’ but there was no timeline at this point as to when it would be done.

‘Alarming’ number of burglaries in rural areas
11
A spate of burglaries targeting elderly people in rural areas in North Louth has been described as “alarming” by a local councillor. According to Louth Fine Gael Cllr John Reilly there have been two recent burglaries in Kilcurry, two burglaries in Kilkerley and a number of break-ins in Cooley. “I know Hackballscross and Dromad Garda Stations are only part-time now. Garda resources are too low,” he said. “A lot of elderly people are now desperately nervous. I’d
encourage people not to have large amounts of cash in the home. “We need more garda resources. I emailed Minister for Justice Helen McEntee about the situation but I’ve had no response to date.” He added: “It is alarming to have so many burglaries in the area. We need more garda resources even on a temporary basis. “I don’t wish to alarm elderly people living in rural areas. More needs to be done to tackle this type of crime.”
Dundalk RFC have a must win end of season league game versus Kilkenny RFC at Mill Road this Saturday 26th February with a 2.30pm kick off. Victory will hopefully mean that Dave Fearon’s men will remain at the summit of the Junior Leinster League for another season. This season has seen the Team, led by no 8 Tiernan Gonnelly have a mixed run of results that has seen the fixtures come very close and has seen Dundalk RFC come close to winning some of these games but the most promising thing is that the Team have seen a gradual improvement to date. The club caters for all of the people of Dundalk and surrounding areas and has Teams for ages from 4 year olds to Senior and currently we have over 400 players of all ages registered in the club. We pride ourselves on being a club that has its locality at the forefront and all of our Coaches from Minis to Senior Players are all volunteers and ex players! Dundalk Leader 23rd February 2022
Students gear up for Rag Week STUDENTS at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) are gearing up to celebrate R.A.G. week from March 7-10. According to DkIT Students Union President Christopher (Chacho) O’Neill there will be day-time activities and night-time events. “We usually have some sort of day time activities throughout the campus such as bake sales,” he said. “We will also be staging one of our most
popular R.A.G. week events – a mock wedding between two students. “The wedding is usually held in Carrick but the nightclub has closed down so we are holding it in The Bank in Newry, then afterwards we will celebrate in Ridleys in Dundalk.” Two students from Dundalk are set to ‘tie the knot’ in a mock ceremony in a bid to raise funds for charity. Conor McGailey, a 2nd year Digital Mar-
keting and Public Relations student from the Avenue Road and Leah Fannin, a 2nd year Event Management student from Greenacres have volunteered for the ceremony. Christopher added: “The whole point of R.A.G. week is to raise money for charity. This year we are making donations to two internal charities. “We will donate to the DkIT Hardship Fund and the DkIT International Fund for
students facing financial difficulty. “There have been a rising number of applications to the hardship fund this year so they are two worthy causes.” Last year, DkIT held a virtual R.A.G. week due to the restrictions in place as a result of Covid-19. “We are looking forward to getting back to the usual structure. It’s a massive relief to be organising face-to-face events again,” he said.
