Young man killed in horror crash

c alls for legislation to make e-scooters safer following Armagh Road crash

A locAl councillor who campaigned for improved road safety on the Armagh Road has said it is “sad” that a fatal crash occurred in the area on Saturday last. There has also ben calls to immediately look at legislation regarding the safety of e-scooters which has been described as ‘not fit for purpose’.

According to Fine Gael councillor John Reilly, the death of a young Algerian refugee called Sifee Dine Boudissa, is a “terrible tragedy”.

The man, in his 20s, died following

a collision involving a car and two escooters. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another man was treated for injuries at the scene and a third man was treated for serious injuries at our lady of lourdes Hospital, Drogheda. The Department of Equality and Integration confirmed that the deceased individual was an International Protection applicant who was a resident at carnberg Hotel on the Armagh Road in Dundalk which is currently being used to house refugees and asylum seekers.

“When refugees moved into the area

initially, there was a terrible safety issue for pedestrians. I high-

lighted the issue and subsequently the road was re-aligned and a footpath installed,” said John.

“i contacted Minister Eamonn Ryan’s office and we received four boxes with high-vis vests which were given to the refugees but unfortunately, there was a reluctance by some to wear the vests.

“There isn’t adequate legislation in place to deal with e-scooters on the roads. The government will have to speed up legislation.”

John added: “it’s a poorly lit road, a very busy road that goes out to the country. People using the road should take the proper safety precautions.

“We tried to improve things. We made an effort. I highlighted the

danger and tried to do something about it.

“it was a miracle this didn’t happen last year. E-scooters are not a safe form of transport in the dark at night along a road like that.”

Fianna Fail councillor Conor Keelan sent his condolences to the faily of the deceased man while urging the government to bring in legislation to make e-scooters safer.

“it’s a tragedy and very sad to see the loss of life of a young man who was also a refugee in the area,” said Cllr Conor Keelan.

“He was also a very talented soccer player and my thoughts are with his family. Currently, the legislation as it stands is not fit for purpose.

“the oireachtas

is examining putting legislation through the Dail so that gardai will have stronger teeth to deal with e scooters on public roads.

“At present, e scooter users are not required by law to have a licence plate, or wear helmets. The vehicle also goes a certain amount of speed.

“Unfortunately, cyclists and e scooters sometimes use the footpaths which are meant for pedestrians and that is a problem.

“There have been a lot of accidents are a result. I think fines should be introduced. We need the legislation in place so it can be enforced.

“the Armagh road is a busy road with a lot of traffic. Additional road traffic calming

measures should be introduced by Louth County Council while we are waiting for legislation to be introduced on this issue.”

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dashcam) and were travelling on the Armagh Road and its environs on saturday, August 19 between 11pm and 11.45pm, is asked to make this footage available to gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042 938 8400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.

History maker Kate o’Connor’s star continues to rise with the Dundalk heptathlete finishing 13th at her debut World Championships in Budapest. the st Gerard’s AC club member became the first ever Irish heptathlete to compete at a World Championship with last year’s Commonwealth Games silver medalist finishing on 5239 points after two days of intense competition in Hungary.

the 22-year old’s competition included a personal best in the 100m hurdles as well as three season’s best in the high jump, 200m, and her final event

which was the 800m.

Kate was very proud with how she finished the competition as she surged down the home straight to finish 4th in the final event of her championships. that strong finish capped a fine debut championships for O’Connor who said she was proud to represent her country

on the world stage.

“I am really proud of myself with how I did and it was an absolute privilege to represent my country on the world stage,” stated Kate. “i had so much fun and I just can’t believe how quickly it all went by. the amount of Irish flags in the stadium was unreal

and it was such a cool feeling to walk around the track at the end of the 800 metres and see all the Irish fans in the crowd.

“i can remember going to the World Championships in London when I was maybe 11 or 12 and thinking that the multi event athletes were the coolest peo-

ple in the stadium and from that day I have always wanted to compete myself at a World Championships. i think last year’s silver medal at the Commonwealth Games gave me a real confidence boost and I can definitely feel myself getting more used to competing at these big events.

“i know there is room for improvement and i know what I have to work on. I am always striving to get better and one day i want to be up there competing for medals at these big championships. i was so proud

of my performance in the 800ms. It’s the last event and everybody is tired after a grueling two days of competition but I finished the race very strongly and it was nice to pass out a few girls on the home straight. somebody told me I was the first ever Irish heptathlete to compete at a world championships and that’s amazing if true. i was inspired by some great athletes of the past and i suppose now that i’m competing at a high level my goal is to inspire as many boys and girls as i can,” stated Kate.

Retained firefighters welcome positive developments in pay dispute Bank of Ireland chief apologises for technical glitches

BAnK of Ireland chief executive Myles O’Grady has apologised for a glitch which occurred last Tuesday evening that led to customers not being able to use their banking services.

The shop steward for Louth’s SIPTU retained firefighters has welcomed recent developments in a dispute over pay and conditions.

Industrial action by retained firefighters has been suspended following talks at the Workplace Relations Commission.

SIPTU shop steward for Louth Lorcan Conlon told the Dundalk Leader that “the fire service has been broken for a very long time”.

The Ardee man said: “It’s great to see steps being taken to move things along in the right

direction. An income floor has been put in place for retained firefighters.”

Members of the retained service are part-time firefighters who are paid an annual retainer for being on-call.

For over ten weeks, members of the retained service have been engaged in industrial action.

The latest terms being proposed include new recruits entering the service with guaranteed minimum earnings of over €18,000.

The guaranteed earnings for firefighters with more than eight years’ service will be

over €21,500 and station officers will have secure minimum earnings of between €27,400 and €31,730.

“It’s the first step in reforming the fire service. If the recommendations are passed, it will go a long way towards fixing the cracks,” said Lorcan.

“The offer will be discussed and then there will be a ballot for all SIPTU members, however, the general consensus is that it is going to be passed.

“We are happy with the outcome. A lot of the points have been hit but not all. The rest can be worked out in time.”

the glitch allowed people with Bank of Ireland accounts to withdraw or transfer funds up to €1000 above their normal limits and as news of this technical error spread over social media, queues began to form at ATM’s all over the country. Dundalk was no exception with numerous videos highlighting lengthy queues outside the Bank of Ireland AtM on Clanbrassil st.

Further videos showed gardaí standing in front of the ATM’s to help stop people getting access to the ‘free’ money.

According to Myles o’Grady the bank were working to make things right having damaged the trust between the bank and their customers.

“We fell well below the

standards our customers expect of us and I apologise sincerely for this,” he said.

“Banking is based on reputation and trust. We have damaged this with our customers and wider society,” he said.

“We are working to put things right. “on tuesday, our mobile app and digital banking services were unavailable to customers. our priority was that all customers continued to have access to cash and could transact on their cards to manage their daily needs, in cash, online or in a shop,” he said.

“the challenge in doing this

during an outage is that customers couldn’t check their balance and some may now find themselves overdrawn.

“i encourage any customers who were impacted by this week’s incident to contact us so that we can work together to find an appropriate solution”.

“Our focus this week is on restoring services, ensuring the stability of our systems, and helping customers,” he said.

“We know we need to do better in future. We continue to invest in our technology to ensure customers have the very best banking services,” he added.

high winds and rain as council respond to challenging Storm Betty conditions

LoutH County Council launched a dedicated response to the impact of Storm Betty throughout last weekend.

the second named storm of the season, Betty saw a ‘yellow’ weather warning issued by Met Éireann for high winds and heavy rain in Louth.

Preparations began early on Friday last (August 18th) as council engineers monitored storm conditions and outdoor crews erected an immediate coastal flood defence barrier at Blackrock, and placed sand bags at strategic flood locations in Blackrock and in Drogheda by Friday evening.

Out of hours teams were on standby, as there was expected to be a need for a reactionary response to tree falls overnight, and crews prepared chainsaws and specially trained operators with all safety gear,

along with trucks and heavy lifting machines in advance.

Louth County Council crews also alerted specialist tree surgeon contractors to the likely need for deployment on Friday night and saturday, when it was

deemed safe to do so.

As storm Betty made landfall in Louth, outdoor crews responded to multiple reports of trees down across the county.

in total, there were 36 incidents of fallen trees and large branches

blocking roads and footpaths in County Louth, during and in the aftermath of Storm Betty.

Twelve trees were down in the Drogheda area, 9 in mid Louth and a further 15 in north Louth. There were also several incidents of flood-

ing and sewer lines blocked by storm debris, which were later cleared by council crews. Staff worked tirelessly in very challenging conditions from 10pm on Friday night right through until 8pm the following day.

there were a number of temporary road closures when heavy lifting equipment and hydraulic powered machines were used to move the largest sized trees from obstructing roads.

Crews used chainsaws and, when re-

quired, were aided by tree surgeon contractors to clear the trees and large branches from roads both quickly and safely throughout the night and into saturday.

Louth County Council Chief Executive Joan paid tribute to staff who responded to the impact of Storm Betty across

the county.

“the sterling work of council staff and outdoor crews throughout last weekend was carried out in very difficult conditions. But these efforts helped to ensure roads, footpaths and other vital services were cleared and safely returned to use.”

New Youth Hub and Café creates space for young people in Carlingford

“tHis is a much-needed space that young people in Carlingford have asked for and which they can make their own while also feeling feel safe and supported.” that’s according to the team at Carlingford Community Development Ltd (CCDL) who recently opened a new Youth Hub and Café in the Foy Centre, which was supported by a bridging loan from Community Finance Ireland (CFI).

Established in 2002, the CCDL manages the Foy Community Centre, a multi-purpose community space, at Dundalk Street, Carlingford. Through consultations with young people in the local community, CCDL took action to address a rise in anti-social behaviour in the local community, by converting an existing vacant café within the Foy Centre into a dedicated youth Hub.

Erin Finegan joined the CCDL in 2020 as Youth Volunteer, working to improve community initiatives for young people in the area. She said: “The Carlingford Community Development team has been at the heart of Carlingford’s community

sector for twenty years and we’re delighted to create a dedicated space for young people here in the Foy Centre.

“We’ve run some really successful initiatives with young people in the area over the past year and the feedback they shared was that they needed a space of their own to meet and socialise and feel connected. We knew we could make that

possible for them with the right financial support. “On foot of Louth Leader Grant aid, we approached Community Finance ireland and they could not have been more straight-forward and the team were so easy to work with. once the paperwork was submitted, we could access the funds within 2-3 weeks which meant we

could get started with work on the café straight away.”

Community Finance Ireland provides social finance loans to community and volunteer-led organisations that drive social impact through sport, community projects, faith-based groups, and social enterprises. operating a model similar to traditional credit unions, all loan repayments go toward supporting other communities across ireland. to support CCDL’s refurbishments, Community Finance Ireland provided a bridging loan of €20,400.

Colm Prendergast, CFi Client relationship Executive for North Leinster said: “it has been a pleasure to work with the CCDL team and we’re delighted to see how the newly established youth Café has transformed the local community’s relationship with its young people.

“The café has already hosted several different initiatives including a Women’s Aid outreach programme and English lessons for Ukrainian refugees. In the

evening time, the café is a safe space for local young people to meet and socialise while being supervised and supported.” supporting communities in Louth

Between 2016 and 2022, Community Finance Ireland delivered €16.2 million in social finance supports to volunteer and community-led organisations in Leinster, including € 1.39 million in support of projects in Louth. Based on a social Value analysis undertaken by the rural Community network in northern Ireland, CFI has established that its funding solution delivers a return on investment that creates a multiplier effect of 3.42 times the initial investment through wider social benefits such as improved community health and increased employment opportunities and skill levels.

A total of € 33.5m million has been allocated to organisation and sports clubs organisations across ireland between 2016 and 2022.

10th Year Celebrations at Dundalk karate, resulting in a 3rd kyu (Brown Belt), 1st Dan and 4th Dan Grading achievements

hAVI n G established Dundalk Karate in 2013, Sensei Marcus, then a 1st Dan set about passing on what she had learned over the years since starting karate alongside her daughters. With many other sporting clubs around Dundalk and with only a handful of students, Sensei Marcus didn’t let this deter her and set about laying the groundwork for the years ahead.

With her immediate and extended family and friends support and encouragement behind her, she quickly found her feet

and set the bar high and this is when one of Dundalk Karate’s very first students got the bug for karate and started getting noticed not only by Sensei Marcus, but numerous other Sensei’s around the country. Liam hoey, a very quiet but determined 7 year old joined Dundalk Karate in September 2013 and now, 10 years later after not only coming up through the grades, but he also spent many evenings and weekends travelling the length and breadth of the country to attend Squad trainings and Competitions. he also competed at not only local and national level, but was selected on several occasions to represent Ireland at an International level. Finally af-

ter achieving 1st Kyu earlier this year, it was time to knuckle down and put in those extra hours alongside fellow Senior Member, thea Mulholland and also Sensei Marcus for one of the toughest grading’s Dundalk Karate would hold to date.

With the hall booked, the tatami mats freshly cleaned, extra water bottles to hand and not forgetting sweat towels, the time had come for Sensei Fran nangle 8th Dan to enter the dojo at the Redeemer Family Resource Centre and call Liam, thea and Sensei Marcus to the mats where they would be put through a rigorous ordeal that would see them all be thankful for all their hard work and dedication over the past

few weeks and months. With a range of Basics, Combinations, Blocks, Ohio’s, Kihons, Kumite techniques, fitness regimes and numerous Kata’s covered over 3 hours, it was time for Sensei nangle to announce his decision.

With everyone on tenderhook’s, Sensei nangle announced his delight in awarding thea Mulholland her 3rd Kyu, Liam hoey his 1st Dan and Sensei Mary Marcus her 4th Dan.

Afterwards Sensei Marcus said, “Seeing members such as Liam and thea achieve such accolades is reward in itself. It just goes to show after all we went through as a club with Covid and our ups and downs over the years, we never gave up at Dundalk Ka-

rate.” Marcus went on to say, “I would not only like to personally say Congratulations to Liam for being our very first member who achieved 1st Dan at Dundalk Karate and to thea for getting her 3rd Kyu, but to say, thank You to each and every member of Dundalk Karate and their family for their continued support over the past few months and years, because without their support I would not have achieved my 4th Dan – OSS.”

If you would like any information on Dundalk Karate and the classes they hold at the Redeemer Family Resource Centre, you can contact Sensei Marcus on 086 353 1625 or karatequeen@ live.com

King vera & Tom 15th & 7th ANNIveRSARY

In loving memory of vera and Tom King, late of Legion Avenue, Dundalk. Our family tree has lost a limb,

A sturdy branch is gone, You were our shelter from the wind and rain, You were the branch that kept us warm. But when the clouds have finally passed, The sun will shine again, And bring to our tree a gentler breeze, Forever whispering your names.

—Sadly missed by your son Gerry, daughter-in-law Moninne; grandchildren vanessa, Wayne, Katie and Caolan and Linda, Martin and Cooper.

miraculOus Prayer TO The hOly sPiriT Holy Spirit, you who makes me see everything and shows me the way to reach my ideal, you who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget all the wrong that is done to me and you who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank you for everything, and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones… in your perpetual glory. Amen. To that end, and submitting to God’s holy will, I ask from you… (mention your favor). You must pray this prayer 3 consecutive days.

After the 3rd day your wish shall be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish the dialogue as your favour has been granted. f.D.

miracle Prayer

Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past, I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one. (mention favour) Take it, dear Heart of Jesus, and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in his merciful eyes, it will become your favour and not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted, no matter how impossible, never known to fail. Thank you to the miracle prayers for favours granted. Amen. h f

Calling Dundalk women over 18 to the Women’s Shed

Dundalk Women’s shed was set up by Louth Local Development in 2022 for women over 18 from the town and the surrounding area to meet new people, explore new interests and enjoy activities with others. We now have our own Steering Committee from among the members and meet weekly in the Wellington Hall Mary’s road on Mondays at 10am.

Every week we have a different speaker or activity followed by an opportunity to chat and enjoy a tea or coffee. You can come when you like and a recommended weekly fee of €3.00 is requested but is not compulsory which covers expenses. Women love it because they say it starts the week well. the Shed also offers a weekly walking group and a monthly book club which meets in Dundalk Library. special interest classes are offered through the local education training board. We also offer outings and we often have a

party morning with music and craic provided by members and visiting guest artists!

the shed has been a great success to date with up to 80 women coming along when they wish.

Members tell us “it’s a great start to my week”

“the Shed is a haven where i enjoy learning new things and meeting new people” “it’s a fantastic place to have a chat and meet new friends” our autumn season starts on Monday 4th of

september when we will be joined by Creative Wellness Practitioner, sandra Gojic who will look at what it means for us moving from summer to autumn and how we can get the best from ourselves at this time of year. throughout september, we focus on our wellbeing and we also have a monster quiz to see how well you know your town. We will organise a theatre outing to An tain and an outing to visit an attraction in the region.

so why not come along and experience the enjoyment of Dundalk

Women’s Shed for yourself and to all our existing members we look forward to welcoming you back for another great year of camaraderie together.

Meet Monday 4th September Wellington Hall, St. Mary’s Road at 10h00 -11h30.

Farmer’s Day out remembered on the 15th of August

A DAY when those who work on the land could relax and enjoy themselves. A traditional pilgrimage for many.

A holiday for quite a few who come from Louth and adjoining counties, Armagh, Meath, Cavan, Monaghan and possibly from other counties and countries for this annual event.

A trip to the seaside at Black-

rock near Dundalk, County Louth, then on to the holy well / shrine at Ladywell in Dundalk where on the night of the 14th the water in the well is said to rise up in exultation and jubilation and there are quite a number of people who will gladly testify that it does indeed rise.

The crowds do not seem to be so large judging by these photos but in fact there was a continuous turnover all day

long. one group leaving as another group was coming in.

A part of Ireland that many would like to think was long gone. Combination of religion, tradition, superstition and local lore.

Toberona, Tober Ronan, John’s Well. In another area of Dundalk, once was what Ladywell still is. A holy place of miracles and cures until time passed it by.
