CBS Primary School Staff taking on mammoth challenge to raise money for all weather playground

THE staff and parents of CBS Primary School in Dundalk are preparing to take on the Hell & Back challenge on June 8 to raise money for their outdoor space.

CBS Primary School Principal Eileen Hart told the Dundalk Leader that they have set up a GoFundMe page if anyone would like to donate. “We have a green area but we just can’t use it. It’s boggy. We get to use it for June. It’s a waste of space,” she said.

“We would love a playground and all-weather area to enhance our pupil’s outdoor learning and play experiences.”

Eileen added: “These improvements will have a huge impact on our children’s overall well-being.”

Hell & Back is designed to push a person’s physical and mental boundaries to the limit. Set in Killruddery Estate, the main hellish event of the year is the annual 13km and 8km summer fest on Saturday, June 8.

Local hotel celebrate magical milestone for Pauline

A STAFF member at Ballymascanlon Hotel & Golf Resort recently celebrated 50 years of working for the popular Dundalk hotel.

Pauline Kelly enjoyed a 50th anniversary party at the Ballymascanlon Hotel & Golf Resort last Thursday.

She started working there when she was just 17-years-old and is 67-years-old now. She has no intention of retiring in the near future.

According to Ballymascanlon Hotel &

Golf Resort General Manager Karen Watters, Pauline is the hotel’s longest serving staff member.

“She started here in April 1974 and has worked in the restaurant ever since. She started as a waitress when she came here on a placement from college,” said Karen.

“She lived in the staff accommodation for 30 years. She’s a great bit of stuff; she’s absolutely fantastic.

“She’s very experience but she also has great patience with younger

staff. She treats the customers here like family.”

Karen added: “We get a lot of repeat business, so the same customers return time after time and they love to see Pauline is still here.

“Last year, she went part-time and moved from five days to three days. We had the 50th anniversary party for Pauline last week.

The course, which offers stunning views of Dublin Bay from the Little Sugar Loaf mountain, combines man-made obstacles with Killruddery’s natural terrain, including lakes, mountains, bogs and forests, to create a uniquely terrifying challenge.

Some of Hell & Back’s infamous obstacles, include Splashzone, Hell on Earth, Heartbreak Ridge, Valley of Pain and Satan’s Pit, as seen on Ireland’s Fittest Family TV Show.

Louth one of 23 counties with less taxi licences compared to pre-Covid levels

TAXI numbers in Louth have declined by almost 16%, according to new figures from the NTA, highlighting stark regional disparities in access to essential transport. The figures came in response to a recent parliamentary question by Independent TD Carol Nolan. This dramatic drop in available taxis raises concerns for the country’s vital hospitality industry and everyday passengers, particularly as tourist numbers are expected to surge in the coming months.

The Midlands East Region excluding Dublin has been heavily impacted by taxi shortages in recent years, falling by 17.5%, which has led to criticism of current SPSV policy by various stakeholders, particularly in hospitality and tourism.

“The significant decrease in taxi availability is a crippling blow to rural Ireland’s hospitality sector,” says Adrian Cummins, CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland.

“These businesses often rely on taxis to get customers home safely, espe-

cially after dark. With little to no public transport links in rural areas and without a vital taxi service, many people simply won’t go out, further squeezing already strained rural businesses. The Government needs to take immediate action to address this issue before it cripples the entire industry entirely.”

The decline in taxi numbers is attributed to a number of factors, including the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic, an onerous entry system, and costly barriers for new drivers –such as outlays of up to €59,000 for a vehicle alone.

The Taxis for Ireland Coalition is calling on the NTA and the Government to take immediate action to address the shortage of taxis. They propose a 30% increase in taxi vehicles by 2027 as a step towards alleviating the impact of driver and vehicle number decrease over the past decade, coupled with Ireland’s population growth.

Dundalk FC name new manager

DUNDALK FC have announced that Noel King will become the club’s new first-team manager.

The 67-year-old had two spells at Oriel Park during a playing career that also saw him line out with clubs such as Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians, Derry City and French outfit Valenciennes.

His first job in management came with Derry City in 1985 and he also held the reins at Shamrock Rovers, Limerick and Finn Harps.

King spent eight years as manager of the Republic of Ireland women’s national team and a further eight with the men’s U21 side.

In 2013, he had an interim spell in charge of the Republic of Ireland’s senior men’s team for games against Germany

Noel

and Kazakhstan.

After retiring from the U21s in 2018, King moved back to the women’s game, guiding Shelbourne to two WNL titles and an FAI Cup and most recently had a spell in charge of Home Farm.

“I’m delighted to be back at Dundalk and taking charge of one of Ireland’s biggest and most successful clubs is a real honour,” said Noel King.

“I can’t wait to get

started and I’m looking forward to meeting up with the players and staff as soon as possible.

“I promise that no effort will be spared in the pursuit of success and trying to bring the glory days back to Oriel Park.

“It’s obviously a difficult time at the moment but I would ask everyone connected with the club to continue supporting the squad.”

Dundalk FC owner Brian Ainscough said: “From the moment the club started looking for a new manager, Noel was one of my top targets.

“The career he has had speaks for itself and his passion and hunger for the game is still very much there, believe me.

“I know in my heart and in my head that I have appointed the right man for the job ahead.”

No places in autism unit for five pupils

FIVE Dundalk families who were told that their sons had places at a second autism (ASD) unit at the De La Salle College had the offers for September 2024 withdrawn last month after the school said they were not now able to open another class.

It is believed none of the five students have secured another place at an appropriate unit in Dundalk and the matter was selected for debate as a Topical Issue last week in Leinster House after it was submitted by Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú.

Opening the debate, the Dundalk deputy said the school had written to parents saying it was ‘because the Department of Education had failed to provide the school with an adequate ASD modular unit’.

He said Louth County Council had granted planning permission for an

extension at the school, which would house an additional ASD unit, in July 2021. Since then, nothing has been built.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘It is now with the Department, at stage 2B. The National Council for Special Education (NCSE) had rightly put pressure on the school because it wanted an autism unit, so a teacher and a classroom were given up and the school took in a class in September 2023, although that class has to be made available back to the school for this September.

‘A modular unit has been provided for that ASD class but there is no room for a modular unit for the planned second ASD class. Perhaps a double modular unit would have worked. I do not know. Either way, there is nothing in play’.

Paige’s charity walk inspired by niece Robyn

A LOUTH Village woman is planning to walk for seven and a half hours straight in a bid to raise money for two charities.

Paige Gernon works for Irish Life in Finnabair Industrial Estate, Dundalk and this Friday (26th) she will embark on the mammoth walking challenge in aid of Down Syndrome Centre North East and The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA). Paige, who nominated the Down Syndrome Centre North East for the chosen charity partner as her niece Robyn has Down Syndrome and uses the centre on a weekly basis.

“I was inspired by my niece Robyn who is looked after brilliantly by the wonderful staff in the Down Syndrome Centre North East. She loves it there and I wanted to give a little bit back to the centre to acknowledge the great work they do,” stated Paige.

“I’ll be walking for eight hours on Friday which will be tough but I’ve been training hard and hopefully I’m ready now to take it on.

“I will also be joined by colleagues for different times, to keep me motivated.

“Every year staff nominate charities to be supported by fundraising efforts. Around 60 to 8o charities are nominated and then

it is narrowed down to two final charities.

“This year the staff voted to support the Down Syndrome North East which I nominated and The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA). I will walk around a 6km loop starting at our Dundalk office at Irish Life and I will keep walking throughout the day stopping briefly after every couple of loops. I’ll start out from the Dundalk Irish Life office and head up to the lights at Xerox and take a right towards DkIT before doing a loop back to the office,” explained Paige.

“I’ve got a treadmill at home which I have been training on

which has ben invaluable giving the awful weather we’ve been having lately.

“Hopefully we are able to make a few euro for the two nominated charities and I’m hoping the weather will be on my side on Friday too,” she added.

Last year Brian Duff took on the challenge for Irish Life in Dundalk and helped raise €5,555 for ChildVision and the Gavin Glynn Foundation. The Dundalk office will have donation buckets, a gofundme link and card machine there on the day for people to donate or they can support Paige online by donating at https://gofund. me/3f284ea0

Dundalk Library celebrate 30 years in Roden Place

LOUTH County Council

are celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Dundalk Library at Roden Place throughout March and April, with a number of events for all ages.

These include a special anniversary edition of the ever-popular table quiz for older adults, ‘Storytime’ sessions for children and the main event held on April 11th, a panel talk celebrating 30 years of the library service in Roden Place.

Dundalk Library has a unique history, it was the first local authority public library in Ireland, opening in 1858. The library subsequently expanded and moved to the former Grammer School in Chapel Street. In 1934 the Louth County

Library service was established (under the Local Government Act of 1925) and the Dundalk Free Library became the centre of the county wide service.

In March 1994, after more than 90 years in Chapel Street, the County Library headquarters moved into the newly renovated Distillery Buildings in Roden Place.

Reflections on the last four decades were shared at the panel talk event, chaired by Frank O’Callaghan of the Old Dundalk Society. Speakers on the night included former County Librarian Ann Ward who led the move from the old Chapel Street Library to the new building in 1994.

Current Acting County Librarian Amanda Branigan spoke about the evolution of the library service over the last 30 years. Long term borrowers Mark Corcoran, Brendan & Mary McQuaid spoke about what the library means to them, and the contribution it has made to their lives. Isabell Murphy, one of only three staff who worked in both Chapel St and Roden Place spoke about the reference and local history library.

“It was a wonderful evening with contributions from the audience including retired staff, current staff, and long serving borrowers. Memories were exchanged, stories and anecdotes laughed about, and ab

THE

contribution over the last 75 years to the town and people of Dundalk.

A Civic Reception was hosted by Louth County Council in County Hall on Monday 15th April, attended by Sisters from the order and members of the St. Louis Secondary School community, elected representatives of Dundalk Municipal District, officials from Louth County Council, and members of the local community.

The Sisters of St. Louis is a religious community which was founded in post-revolutionary France in 1842 in Juilly outside Paris. They arrived in Ireland in 1859, when three sisters came to Monaghan from the French Motherhouse near Paris.

In 1949, at the invitation of Cardinal D’Alton, they set up a convent in Dundalk where they secured a site beside the historic 15th century Castletown Castle also known as Bellew’s Castle. The whole site is known as Dún Lughaidh. Four St. Louis sisters, Sr. Jeanne

D’Arc, Sr. Hildegard, Sr. Dympna and Sr. Therese opened a secondary school on the site named St Louis Dundalk on 4th September 1950, which was originally opened with 16 pupils. It quickly expanded in numbers, after the main school building was built and opened in September 1953. Over recent decades it has grown to become one of the largest schools in Dundalk.

The Civic Award presented by Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Municipal District, Cllr. Sean Kelly, recognised ‘the opportunities afforded by the education given by the Sisters to the children of Dundalk and surrounding areas can never be underestimated, and their memory will remain foremost in the living history of the county.’

The award also noted the donation in October 2023, by the Sisters of St. Louis, of a piece of land on the Bellewstown Road, Dundalk ‘for future development as a public amenity, leaving a lasting legacy for the community they served so well.’

Speaking at the event, Cllr. Sean Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Municipal District reflected on the arrival the St.

Regional Group of Dáil Deputies

Propose Motion to End Means Testing for Family Carers

THE Regional Group, comprising nine Dáil Deputies, is seeking cross party support for their motion to end the means testing of family carers. The motion seeks to replace the current system with a non-means tested scheme based solely on care needs, recognising the invaluable contribution of over 500,000 family carers across Ireland.

“Family Carers represent 1 in 8 of the Irish population and have long been the cornerstone of care provision in the country. However, the financial vulnerability imposed by the current means testing of the Carer’s Allowance has left many carers in uncertain financial situations, often dependent on their partner’s income. In many more instances carers and those whom they are caring for are struggling to make ends meet, forcing them to make a choice between food and fuel for heating”, said Deputy Fitzpatrick.

You only have to read the State of Caring Report 2022 produced by Family Carers Ireland to see the significant challenges faced by family carers, including the battle in accessing services and carer’s themselves feeling undervalued by society.

Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick, speaking on behalf of the Region-

al Group, emphasised the critical need for legislative change: “The recent referendum has once again shone a light on the critical role carers play in our communities. For too long family carers have been left behind without proper support by the State. This needs to end now. It is time for the State to recognise and support family carers adequately. We urge all Dail Deputies to back the Motion that seeks to provide financial stability and recognition to family carers on April 24th”.

Catherine Cox, Head of Communications and Policy at Family Carers Ireland, supports the call for reform by the Regional Group:

“The means test for Carer’s Allowance is outdated, gender-biased, and no longer fit for purpose. Thousands of full-time family carers do not qualify for Carer’s Allowance due to modest household incomes, undervaluing the full-time work they provide. The introduction of a Participation Income* would mark a significant step forward in acknowledging and supporting the vital work of family carers in our society.”

Deputy Fitzpatrick affirms that the Regional Group’s Private Members Motion proposes the introduction of a non-means tested payment for carers by 2027, with a significant increase in the income thresholds from now until that date; a move that aligns with the long-standing advocacy efforts of Family Carers Ireland for a more inclusive and supportive system for carers.

The motion is set for debate on Wednesday the 24th of April which will be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV between 10am12noon, with the Regional Group and Family Carers Ireland call on all members of the Dáil to support this motion, recognising the invaluable contribution of family carers to Irish society and ensuring they receive the support and recognition they deserve.

Walter excited to get on the road with new band

WALTER (Wally) McConville, one of Dundalk’s most famous musical sons, is back on the live circuit with his new band 21 Bridges who will launch their brand new original album in the Headford Arms on Saturday May 4th.

The former Bagatelle drummer enjoyed huge success in the 1980’s with memorable hits such as Summer in Dublin, Trump Card and Second Violin. Wally toured the world with fellow Dundalk man Liam Reilly (singer) and Bray duo Ken Doyle (Bass) and John O’Brien (guitar) as the band enjoyed international acclaim from fans all over the world.

Walter, originally from Fr Murray Park, was the youngest of four brothers (Brian Eamonn and Tommy were his siblings) with all four very accomplished footballers growing up (with Tommy going on to become one of Dundalk FC’s best ever players) but music was a huge passion for Walter and after joining Bagatelle in the late 70’s things began to happen for Walter and his bandmates including Dundalk’s Liam Reilly when Summer in Dublin became a huge hit in the

album) to rehearsals one day and the boys loved it. From there we started writing original songs and pretty quickly we had enough material for a new album.

Walter left Bagatelle in 1993 after over a decade of success with the band and now he is back with a brand new band called 21 Bridges (Walter’s bandmates include Noel O’Neill, Joey King, Pearse Clarke and Brendan Leavy) and the excitement in his voice is clearly heard as he speaks about the launch of the band’s new record ‘The Flame of Love’ which will take place on May 4th at the Headfort Arms Hotel in Kells.

“The new album has

ten original songs and they written by myself and two other guys in the band. I first came across my now bandmates a few years ago in the NewgrangeHotel. They were playing Bagatele songs and they were very good which was unusual because I’ve seen many bands butcher our songs. I got in touch with them and we sat down and had a chat and before you know it we were rehearsing together and playing covers.

“I brought this original song called Goldmine (first single from the new

“Every note and every lyric was a product of myself and Brendan and Joey which has resulted in the new album. I haven’t gigged since Covid so I’m very excited to get back out on the road and play in front of a crowd again. I live just outside Inniskeen now and have the drum kit out in the shed so I’m back playing them regularly again now and I can’t wait to get out on the road and tour this new album which we are all very proud of.

“Music has been a great passion of mine throughout my life and I’m grateful that I am still around making new music and enjoying the process,” stated Walter.

Walter and his bandmates from 21 Bridges will launch their brand new album ‘The Flame of Love’ on Saturday May 4th in the Headfort Arms, Kells. All proceeds from the launch will be generously donated to Sosas Ireland. You can listen to the new album on Spotify Music.

Indian community celebrate ‘New Year’s Day’

Indian states

to south, east to west, have regional calendars that date back in time, similar to the Gregorian calendar with its first day of the year falling around mid-April.

Marked as ‘Puthandu’, ‘Ugadhi’, and ‘Vishu’ - these terms denote the ‘New Year’ in their respective regional languages, continuing to hold significant cultural importance in the lives of Indians, celebrated with unwavering zeal and fervour.

Residents in and around our county gathered to celebrate this auspicious ‘New Year’ day

on 6th April 2024 at Geraldines GAA, Haggardstown, Dundalk. The festivities kicked off with an energetic flash mob, leading to a series of enjoyable activities tailored for both children and adults.

Following the lively start, attendees were treated to a homemade vegetarian banquet served on traditional banana leaves, a hallmark of South Indian wedding customs. The feast comprised a 7-course meal with over 23 different dishes, a culinary feast fit for royalty, all meticulously cooked and served by peo-

ple of the community. Celebrations and events like these play a key role in teaching young minds of the community about traditions and practices.

The celebration finished off with south Indian music and dance (DJ). Over 130 people from Dundalk and surrounding areas attended the event. Everyone had a great time enjoying the South Indian hospitality and returned home with the satisfaction of attending a ‘Grand Indian Wedding’ even though they were far from home.
