ALL bus stops on Sandy Lane in Blackrock are to be cancelled because of infrastructure changes at the Rock Road junction, according to Halpenny Coaches.

Speaking to the Dundalk Leader John Halpenny of Halpenny Travel said that due to the changes made, their buses are unable to turn at the junction without breaking the law.

“It’s a safety problem and we need to look at it. The traffic guards examined it and they also claimed it was unsafe,” said John.

“No-one wants an accident. We made the difficult decision to cancel all stops on Sandy Lane

but we wrote a letter to the council explaining the situation.

“We are encouraging the council to come up with a solution. The guards have said it’s not safe.”

John added: “A lot of people are affected by this.

3,900 people travel on that route with 1,500 – 1,600 on that single road.

“We carry three wheelchair users per week and the only place in Blackrock with a footpath high enough for them to get off is in Sandy Lane.

It takes away their civil rights.

“We also carry women with buggies who depend on the service for trips to the doctor and the like.”

Louth Village man Brendan Lawlor was celebrating on the double after his latest victory on the European Disabled Golf Association tour in Dubai over the weekend. This was Lawlor’s third win of the season having previously claimed the EDGA Cazoo Open and the ISPS HANDA World Disability Invitational. And to top it all off his latest victory is expected to see him return to the top of the EDGA world rankings when they are updated later this week.

Brendan took a twoshot lead into the final round and extended that to four by the ninth hole of his final round. However, the pressure was on when the Canadian Kurtis Barkley reduced that lead to just a single shot with four holes to go. The Louth Village native responded like a true champion birdieing both fifteen and seventeen to seal an impressive four shot victory.

Brendan’s nerves down the finishing straight were most likely settled by his Dad Billy (Manager/Owner of local firm CTI Business Solutions), who was on the bag for him in Dubai.

The event was played concurrently with the second and third rounds of the European Tour’s season-ending Rolex Series event, the DP World Tour Championship which featured Rory McIlroy and eventual winner Colin Morikawa. Brendan received his trophy alongside Colin Morikawa as part of a live presentation on Sunday evening.

Cllr Maeve Yore introduced a motion to have an independent audit of the junction to solve the issue at the November meeting of the Dundalk Municipal District.

“To say I’m frustrated is an understatement. I was approached in June of this year and told that there was an issue,” said Maeve.

“The following month I met with the engineer who

signed off on the layout of the new junction.

“My motion will be put before all councillors in December to vote on it. This whole situation contradicts the Town & Village Scheme, which aims to encourage the use of public transport.

“I’m doing my utmost to help bring about a solution to this problem. There just has to be more communication and collaboration involved.”

Roisin and Robert to light it up for two worthy causes A DUNDALK family is planning to light up their house again this year in a bid to raise €2,000 for two worthy causes close to their hearts.

Roisin Carolan and her husband, Robert, from Cortiel, Kilkerley raised €4,303 for the Dundalk Simon Community last year.

“My husband used to light up the house every year and then in 2019 my sister joked with us that we should light up the house and raise money for charity,” said Roisin.

“My sister sadly passed away in 2020 during Covid so this is part of her legacy.”

This year Roisin and Robert intend to donate any funds raised to the Rotunda Foundation and the NICU in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

“We are lighting our house again this year from 5pm each day, from December 3 until the New Year,” she said.

“Last year I was pregnant with twins and one

Roisin and Robert’s house all lit up last year for the Simon Community. of them was diagnosed with fatal foetal abnormality.

“One of the twins had a condition called Trisomy 13, which meant the baby was unlikely to survive until birth, and if the baby did survive to birth it wouldn’t live for very long afterwards.”

Roisin and Robert tried to be as positive as possible, and were distracted by raising the money for the Dundalk Simon Community but the day after they turned the Christmas lights off, Roisin was rushed to hospital at 27 weeks pregnant.

“I gave birth six days later to two beautiful baby boys. Baby Ethan

spent two weeks in NICU in the Rotunda Hospital, and spent a further seven weeks in the wonderful care of the team at the NICU in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda,” she said.

“Baby Robert lived for just one hour, surrounded by love, and regaled of all the stories we could tell him about our family and how much we loved him. Baby Robert was buried five days later surrounded by his loving and heartbroken family.

“We are so grateful to the teams in both the Rotunda and the NICU in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda, for their compassion, empa-

thy, quick thinking and dedication in the height of the pandemic.”

Roisin added: “Please donate whatever you can, and be sure to visit and see the lights in person.

John’s 1,100 baby steps journey Dundalk man John Morgan has been a wheelchair user since 2012 but ever since then he has been determined to try and walk as much as possible using a walker. Now, the Suil na Mara man has launched a fundraiser which will see him try and take 1100 steps every day in a bid to raise money for the Irish Wheelchair Service Sports and Activity Service.

According to John he has seen at first hand the great work locally that the group do to help people in wheelchairs, and he wanted to give a little bit back by raising money to buy specialised sports equipment.

“I have been in a wheelchair for almost a decade now and although I know I will never be able to walk independently I decided last January to try walking a little bit with the aid of my walker. With the help of my friend Patricia Brannigan who works with the IWA I have been building up my fitness and from being able to walk 220 baby steps back in January I am now doing 1100. Patricia or another carer from the IWA come out to me at 8am every morning and watch on as I do my steps. I am considered a falls risk, so I am unable to do the steps without somebody being there with me.

“I initially started doing the steps when I was staying out in my father’s house during the pandemic last January and I would walk a few steps with the walker down to the shed at the bottom of the garden.

Gradually I have been going further and further and now I am able to do

1100 steps which takes me just over an hour. It takes a lot out of me, but I really enjoy doing it,” explained John.

“I play bochia every Saturday morning with fellow wheelchair users and our sports coordinator is a lady called Katie Byrne who also teaches wheelchair basketball for children as well as a senior basketball team.

I have seen at first hand the great work she does, and I wanted to help out by trying to raise money to go towards specialised equipment like maybe special wheelchairs for children’s basketball or equipment for our bochia groups.

“With that in mind, I plan on walking every morning between now and December 31st and hopefully I can maybe get up to 1500 steps a day by then which would be a good achievement considering I started on just over 200 last January,” noted John.

“I cannot say enough good things about the IWA. They have been invaluable to me especially during the pandemic when they sent outreach workers around to the

house regularly to make sure I was ok. They hold weekly quizzes and a facility to work on your upper body strength in their offices which I enjoy, and they have a van which can take up to six wheelchair users out somewhere for the day like maybe the beach for example during the summer.

“They also have a respite facility out in Ashbrook called Shrattan House which I attended, and I simply couldn’t do without them. They are great people who work there, and I consider them friends at this stage. I will keep walking everyday and hopefully by the end of the year I will have raised a few euro to give to the IWA’s sports and activity service,” added John.

Former dkIt student receives national award Dundalk man Conor Matthews has been named as joint runner up in a national essay writing competition. The annual Hubert Butler Essay Prize, established in honour of Hubert Butler, one of Ireland’s most distinguished intellectuals and essayists is a prestigious competition run by the House of European Art and seeks to encourage the art of essay writing with a European dimension and expand interest in Butler’s work. The subject of this year’s prize was “During the plague I came into my own: Who or what benefitted from Covid-19?”.

Conor, originally from Glenwood in Dundalk is now living in Leixlip in County Kildare. He is a past pupil in both the Friary Boys School and the De La Salle secondary school and he credits former English teacher Brother Raymond for nurturing his love for writing.

Conor’s previous acknowledgements include the Jim Craven Poetry Award, becoming a contributing author to the DKIT writers group anthology book No Bother, led by writer Ferdia MacAnna, and taking part in a writers group held by playwright Jimmy Murphy and Glass Mask Theatre at Smock Alley. was understandably proud and delighted to have picked up second place in the competition.

“I am deeply grateful to have been chosen as joint runner-up for the Hubert Butler Essay Prize. It’s an honour considering Hubert Butler’s inspiring work and the fact myself and my fellow prize recipients get to add to that legacy.

Now more than ever it’s important to think not just about what we value and but also how we can value others, following in the footsteps of the late Mr. Butler.

“The essay probably took me two or three days to get the first draft together and then I went through it and tidied it up before submitting it. They emailed me a while later to tell me I had come joint second and I was thrilled to hear the news. The essay I wrote kind of talks about how I was forced to reassess my life during the pandemic and talks about my strug-

gles during periods of unemployment. I kind of think it is interesting how peoples attitudes to wards the unemployed have shifted over the last couple of years and the change in perception towards those who are out of work,” noted Conor.

Chairman of the Hubert Butler Essay Prize had the following to say about Conor’s essay.

“Conor Matthews essay is unremittingly and sometimes laceratingly personal, arrestingly delineating an individual crisis in order to illuminate how the pandemic enforced a new attitude towards mortality: “If it wasn’t for Covid, I’d be dead”. The sobering experience of unemployment, alienation and uncertain mental health is re-read powerfully through the perspective of Covid and its discontents; it is an essay full of uncomfortable truths,” he wrote.

Louth Fianna Fáil Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Children, Disability, Equality and Integration, Senator Erin McGreehan, has welcomed the

Government’s approval of the Mother and Baby Institutions Payment Scheme (MBIPS).

However Senator McGreehan called on the Catholic Church to

pay their fair share in the Mother and Baby homes redress scheme.

The Scheme will provide financial payments and a form of enhanced medical card

to defined groups in acknowledgment of suffering experienced while resident in Mother and Baby and County Home Institutions. It is estimated that approximately 34,000 people will qualify for financial payments under the Scheme.

It is anticipated that approximately 19,000 people will be eligible

for an enhanced medical card. The total cost of the Scheme is estimated at approximately €800m.

Senator McGreehan commented, “The report completed by the Commission of Investigation was disappointing and its findings upset many people. The proposals for the Mother and Baby Institutions

Payment Scheme go well beyond the recommendations of the Final Report of the Commission of Investigation.

This clearly shows how the Minister and the Government have listened very carefully to all stakeholders, taking into consideration all opinions. It is this collaborative approach that has been to the core

of all Government actions to date and I am under no doubt that this attitude will continue.

“This redress scheme is a further step in acknowledging the serious wrongs that were done onto so many women and children in this country.”

Senator McGreehan added, “However the Church now needs to

pay their fair share. It is important that they acknowledge the wrong and pay financially for the wrongs that they did, let’s not forget that the religious organisations got paid to run these institutions.

“The women and children deserve acknowledgment from the Church institutions in this.”

‘Freeing the truth’-how one man took on the justice system and the ruc- and won D u ndalk - b a s e d counsellor Bernard O’Connor will launch his new book entitled ‘Freeing the Truth’ tomorrow evening in the Old Gaol, Dundalk. The book is a first hand testimony from Bernard of his experiences of being beaten and threatened by the RUC in the late 70’s as well as how he coped with those experiences in the years that followed.

In 1977, a young Enniskillen schoolteacher, Scout leader and father of eight, Bernard O’Connor was arrested and taken to Castlereagh Interrogation Centre where he was brutalised and tortured for four days.

Brainwashed, worn down, sleep deprived, and in pain O’Connor knew how very close he was to doing a deal, to confessing to crimes including murder that he had no knowledge of and could not possibly have committed.

He was saved, he believes, by a fish supper.

Three years later, O’Connor made history

‘Freeing the Truth’ will be launched tomorrow. by becoming the first person to win a civil case for torture against the RUC. The law governing interrogation methods was changed as a result.

But the price was high. O’Connor would be subjected to a lifetime of harassment by the security forces af-

fecting both himself and his family. He would survive a Loyalist murder bid. Always, fighting the insinuations that a man who had never had a charge proffered against him, had somehow eluded justice.

The collateral damage was incalculable.

A mental breakdown, a

broken marriage would follow before he retrained as a psychotherapist and discovered renewed personal and professional happiness.

Yet still, today, Bernard O’Connor knows he will never be a free man.

This is his testimony, written in the hope that others will understand; and that such evil injustice can never again be perpetrated on another innocent.

‘Freeing the Truth will be launched in the Old Gaol, Dundalk on the 25th November, at 7.30pm, when there’ll be an opportunity to hear Bernard talk about his experiences. Guest speakers will also address the assembly.

Fourth year Mental Health Nursing students Hannah Boyle, Jill McEvoy, Laoise Nolan, Jade Treacy, Claire Carvill, Eleanor Curran, and Kerri Ann Mone held a fundraising day at DkIT.

The fundraising day, which was organised as part of a class project, was held on Monday, November 8.

Fundraiser Hannah Boyle told the Dundalk Leader that Peata Pet Therapy’s principal activity is a dog visiting scheme.

We came up with the idea because we love our pets and are passionate about dogs,” said Hannah.

The Department of Public Health North East, Midlands Louth Meath Community Healthcare and Louth County Council are concerned about the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in Louth and are appealing to the people of Louth to adhere to the public health advice.

Dr Augustine Pereira, Director of Public Health North East said: “The latest figures, covering the 14 day incidence from the 2nd November to 15th November, reported the electoral areas in Drogheda Urban with an incident rate of 2415.4 cases per 100,000 of population and Drogheda Rural with an incident rate of 1963.5 cases per 100,000

of population. This is equivalent of saying if 40 people were tested in Drogheda in the past 14 days, we picked up 1 case. If we consider a longer timeframe, we are nearing levels of 1 out of every 20 people testing positive in past month. COVID-19 infection is everywhere, so now is the time to protect yourself and protect one another. If you are unvaccinated, your risk of serious infection is high, so please avail of the vaccination now.”

Hand Washing & Respiratory

Hygiene: Ensure regular hand washing and practice good respiratory hygiene.

Ventilation: Let fresh air circulate in your area by opening windows, doors and air vents as much as possible.

Social Distancing: Keep your distance and avoid crowded places where you cannot social distance.

‘There can be no hard border on the Island of Ireland’

There can be no hardening of the border in Ireland, regardless of ‘sabre rattling’ by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, according to Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú.

The Sinn Féin deputy was one of a number of public representatives from both sides of the border who joined a protest, organised by community group Border Communities Against Brexit (BCAB) at Carrickcarnon on Saturday afternoon.

The Louth / Armagh border event was one of a number organised in border areas by the group which aimed to send a message to Boris Johnson and Brexit Minister David Frost to ‘back off’ the Irish Protocol.

Many see huge advantages for the North in economic terms of having access to both the EU single market and the British market.

‘The EU has already moved considerably and indicated it is willing to deliver on further technical aspects but is

not willing to deviate from the point that the protocol is needed.

‘Professor Harvey told the protest that the issue of Irish unity is live and there is an onus on the Irish government to start seriously planning for it. This is the real solution to the difficulties we are facing.

‘Time and time again, I have reiterated in every forum available, including at recent Conference on the Future of Europe meetings in Strasbourg, that the time for planning for Irish unity is now.

Women’s Aid Dundalk 5k Walk

Women’s Aid Dundalk is marking the global 16 Days of Action with a 5K walk between 25th November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, until 10th December, Human Rights Day. The Women’s Aid Dundalk 5K is an awareness raising and fundraising event to highlight the issue of Domestic Abuse and Coercive Control.

The event also seeks to raise the profile of Women’s Aid Dundalk as a local, independent, autonomous service provider in Dundalk.

Niamh Quinn, Women’s Aid Dundalk support worker said: “All funds raised will go towards the work of the organisation in the local area.”

You can join the Women’s Aid 5K walk by registering on the iDonate page found on its Facebook with a minimal charge of €15 which includes a t-shirt to wear on your run/ walk.

There is also fundraising option if you wish to raise funds for the organisation.

Bugs, Bees and Native Trees at the Green Church

A tree planting initiative took place on 13th November at St Nicholas parish Church (The Green Church).

We also had Prof Ronan Mullan from the Bugs, Bees and Native Trees initiative to explain the project as well as Church of Ireland’s Armagh Diocesan Youth and Children’s Officer, Mr David Brown and Rev Richard Moore blessed the children and their planting.

The Diocese of Armagh, the “Bugs, Bees and Native trees” project and Christian Aid (Ireland) have teamed up to plant local species of trees across Parishes supporting children in being more aware of better protecting God’s gift of creation, locally and globally.

Friends in Need Dundalk Are e-scooters safe for all road users? offer a helping hand

Friends in Need Dundalk is a new and exciting fundraising initiative set up by a group of 10 like-minded people in order to assist local groups, charities and various organisations around town and the wider area who find themselves in financial difficulties as a result of the current pandemic.

The group launched the new project on Monday in the Long Walk Shopping Centre and the first local organisation to benefit from Friends in Need will be the Dundalk Young Irelands GFC juvenile section. Friends in Need are in the Pop Up Shop in the Longwalk Shopping Centre until Saturday 27th November selling all sorts of items which have been kindly donated by members of the public. All money raised this week will go towards the Dundalk Young Irelands Juvenile Section.

Ireland finalist Kelley Mc Ardle was in attendance on Monday and the initiative has been a great success so far with plenty of people dropping in to pick up some great bargains while all the time supporting a fantastic local football club. According to one of the project organisers Madeline Morgan the idea came about towards the end of last month when a group of likeminded people decided to use their volunteering experience and skills to help out various groups around town.

“The idea came about at the end of October when a group of ten of us who have a lot of experience with volunteering with various charities and organisations around town decided to put our heads together and try and give a dig out to people who are struggling to raise funds for their groups. We have picked a number of local organisations

and we will raise money for a different group each week by selling donations we have received in our pop up shop in the Longwalk. We are raising money for the Dundalk Yong Ireland’s this week and in the weeks ahead we will be helping out some more local groups including Dundalk Dog Rescue and SNAP. We have an amazing team of volunteers and we have a lot of experience so we are only too happy to put that knowledge and experience together to try and give local organisations a dig out. A lot of these charities and groups have been hit hard by the pandemic and have had to cancel fundraisers etc so this is our way of helping out. We are open from Monday to Saturday in the pop up shop in the Longwalk and we welcome everybody who wants to come down and have a look,” stated Maddie.

New Grow Remote Network Launching December 1st Grow Remote is a non-profit social enterprise promoting the benefits of remote work. There are 75 chapters across the country and even more around the world. Each one aims to make a sustainable social impact by supporting people to live, work and participate locally.

The launch of the new Dundalk Chapter, aims to connect local workers be they, working remotely, business start – ups or interested in finding remote work which allows them to work from home. Monthly meet-ups, which will take place on the 1st Wednesday of the month will vary from informal coffee sessions with like minded people to local speaker on particular topics which have been raised by members.

Our launch event will see speakers from the Grow Remote network and a local entrepreneur Ciara Breen is the local Grow Remote chapter lead, whose role it is to coordinate events and activities for the remote ecosystem at the local level.

Ciara returned to Ireland during the pandemic working remotely for Standard Life Edinburgh.

Earlier this year joined the team at Creative Spark and will manage the new Co-working hub in Clanbrassil Street opening early next year. Ciara is passionate about supporting remote workers and building a local community that support local workers or those looking for job opportunities that work with their lifestyles.

Three organisations have expressed their concerns recently about the safety of e-scooter use in Ireland. They say the Government has not considered the needs of disabled pedestrians in the new Road Traffic Bill – including people who are blind or vision impaired, wheelchair users or elderly people.

The National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI), along with the Irish Wheelchair Association and Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind are appealing to Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan to include a number of key changes in the bill.

The new Road Traffic Bill, which legislates the use of e-scooters and e-bikes on Irish roads for the first time, was debated in the Dáil last week and should be concluded before the end of this year.

National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) Head of Communications and Advocacy at NCBI, June Tinsley, tells AA Ireland that e-scooters are “becoming more and more common so there now needs to be clear, comprehensive and robust legislation in place that protects the rider and those using public spaces”.

“We [NCBI] want to ensure that the current legislation that’s being debated is improved upon, so that the needs of disabled pedestrians are not overlooked and that their confidence and independence are not compromised,” Tinsley adds.

The NCBI have said efforts to have audio devices mandated so that

people can hear approaching scooters have so far gone unheeded.

“There needs to be an audio system installed in any e-scooter at the design stage, so that people who are blind or vision impaired can hear them approaching.”

This is already an EU-wide regulation for electric vehicles – they have to have an artificial sound when they’re travelling under 30kmph: “an audio system has to be installed in electric vehicles, so why can’t it be installed in escooters”.

The NCBI also says near misses with visually impaired people attempting to cross roads and walk on footpaths, where silent e-scooters present a potential threat, is an issue that needs to be recognised in the design of legislation. They also say that there needs to be designated parking bays, that are separate from the footpath.

“We need to make sure e-scooters are not parked against railings or lampposts, where they could cause an obstruction.”

Under the new Bill, a speed limit of 25kmph will be implemented, but according to the NCBI, this maximum speed limit is too high.

“The legislation is very unclear surrounding the safety measures, as it is around insurance and registration. So in instances of collision, it’s unsure as to what would happen.”

Kennedy, says that “whilst Guide Dogs are trained to guide their blind or vision impaired owners through busy routes, they can be put under undue stress if they are forced to try to anticipate the unpredictable movements of an e-scooter”.

“Often the pedestrian footway is the only option to maintain someone’s independence and as such e-scooters would be safer for all if they were required to use cycle lanes or roads,” Kennedy adds.

The Irish Wheelchair Association Public Engagement Manager at the Irish Wheelchair Association, John Fulham, says that there are “very obvious benefits to the introduction of e-scooters as part of an overall transport strategy on climate change. But what we want is that they’re introduced in a manner that is safe and fair for people with disabilities”.

“My experience with e-scooters is growing. From those who I have seen using them, the majority are not using them safely. They’re on the footpaths. They’re driving them too fast,” adds Fulham.

“The legislation doesn’t specify this. It can be very unsettling for people with mobility issues who don’t have the ability to move or jump out of the way quickly.”

“Scooter riders and drivers should keep their speed down. Be considerate of other road users. Be aware of the general rules of the road,” adds Fulham.
