Muirhevnamór were out in force for one of their own last Saturday evening as newly crowned world champion Amy Broadhurst returned to her home in Glenmore Park for her triumphant homecoming. The 25-year old followed in the footsteps of Katie Taylor, Kellie Harrington and Michael Conlon when she won gold in the light-welterweight final against Algeria’s Imane Khelif as he became Ireland’s fourth World Champion. Across the country Lisa O’Rourke was experiencing similar scenes in Castlerea after she became Ireland’s fifth World Champion shortly after Amy. Amy received a Garda Escort into Muirhevnamór and was cheered home as she waved to the huge crowds from the front seat of an open top car. A visibly emotional Amy hugged friends and family before popping a bottle of champagne soaking the cheering crowds around her. Speaking about the support she received from her hometown she compared the scenes that greeted her to the ones that greeted Katie Taylor when she won her Olympic gold medal in 2012.
