Muirhevnamór were out in force for one of their own last Saturday evening as newly crowned world champion Amy Broadhurst returned to her home in Glenmore Park for her triumphant homecoming. The 25-year old followed in the footsteps of Katie Taylor, Kellie Harrington and Michael Conlon when she won gold in the light-welterweight final against Algeria’s Imane Khelif as he became Ireland’s fourth World Champion. Across the country Lisa O’Rourke was experiencing similar scenes in Castlerea after she became Ireland’s fifth World Champion shortly after Amy. Amy received a Garda Escort into Muirhevnamór and was cheered home as she waved to the huge crowds from the front seat of an open top car. A visibly emotional Amy hugged friends and family before popping a bottle of champagne soaking the cheering crowds around her. Speaking about the support she received from her hometown she compared the scenes that greeted her to the ones that greeted Katie Taylor when she won her Olympic gold medal in 2012. Continued from Page 1 “This is crazy. I watched Katie Taylor ten years ago when she won the Olympics when she had the whole of her estate out and the fact that it’s happening to me now ten years later is just unbelievable. I can’t believe it. “There’s been times when my parents and my family have had to put up with the worst of me because I thought I can’t do this no more. Mentally it gets really tough. “I’m standing here now as the World Champion and only five people in Ireland have done it, names like Michael Conlon, Katie Taylor and Kelly Harrington and now I’m one of them names,” beamed Amy. Watching on alongside the hundreds of cheering fans were Amy’s proud parents Sheila and Tony as well as her three brothers Tony Jr, Stephen and Paul. Dundalk Sinn Féin representatives Ruairí Ó Murchú and Cllr. Kevin Meenan congratulated world champion Amy Broadhurst as they welcomed her back to her home at Glenmore Park in Muirhevnamor on Saturday.

Amy was given a Garda escort back to her home in Glenmore Park. The Sinn Féin TD, who is, like Amy a former pupil of St Joseph’s NS, said: ‘Amy is a wonderful ambassador for sport, for women’s sport, and she is the absolute epitome of effort and commitment leading to results. ‘I have to commend

the entire family, including her parents, Sheila and Tony Broadhurst, who have given everything to support Amy over the last 20 years. All the lonely times training and all the hard work in the gym, all the times when she was on the canvass and got back up again,

has paid off’. Cllr. Meenan said: ‘Amy is a beacon of hard work and an inspiration to young people in Dundalk and in Ireland. She is incredibly talented, but acknowledges that it was hard work and commitment which allowed her to achieve her dreams’.

Jobs blow as PayPal announce cuts Staff in PayPal’s offices in Dundalk and Dublin have been told that the company have proposed to cut 172 jobs in the town. A further 135 redundancies have been confirmed by PayPal at their Dublin office in Ballycoolin which brings the total of job proposed job losses to 307. In a statement from a company spokesperson PayPal stressed that the decision to cut jobs in Dundalk and Dublin does not change its commitment to Ireland. "PayPal remains committed to Ireland and our Dublin and Dundalk sites will continue to be among our largest global centres for employment and operations, supporting our customers. "We will continue to employ well over 2,000 employees after the proposed changes. The changes will help us scale our business to meet the evolving needs of our customers, ready for our next chapter of growth," it said. "We are offering enhanced redun-

dancy and support packages to help them as they move to the next step in their careers," the statement concluded. Sinn Féin TDs for Louth, Ruairí Ó Murchú and Imelda Munster, say they are ‘deeply concerned’ about the future commitment of PayPal to the county after the announcement Deputy Ó Murchú said the news, which ‘came out of the blue for staff’, was a ‘terrible blow’ to workers and their families. He said: ‘Deputy Munster and I have spoken to workers and to the company representative today and the news is shocking. We understand that consultation in the non-unionised company will start on Thursday and the redundancies will happen on June 27. ‘This seems to be very rushed and we would want there to be proper consultation with workers, and every support given to them, ahead of them being put on the dole queue’.

‘Oscars of the Community Sector’, celebrates the often unsung work of community groups that selflessly work to make local communities a better place to live in, work in or visit. Both local groups were among eighty six groups to have been nominated by thirty four Local Authorities across Ireland on the 19th anniversary of the awards. Sponsored by IPB, this All-Island competition acknowledges the invaluable work undertaken by local communities to create civic-pride in their area. It focuses on people coming together to shape, improve and enjoy all that is good about their area. It has grown into the largest competition recognising and celebrating community development achievements on the island of Ireland. Speaking about the awards Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council Cllr. Pio Smith said: “Louth has a strong tradition of community action and volunteerism and we have taken part for many years in this Pride of Place competition.

This Awards ceremony recognises the invaluable efforts of all those involved in their communities who really make a difference. I want to congratulate both groups on their awards and thank them for representing Louth with such pride”. Joan Martin, Chief Executive, Louth County Council said; “County Louth has been very successful over the years in the All Ireland Pride of Place competition and I congratulate the Cox’s Demesne Youth & Community project on their fantastic success in the 2021 competition, winning the overall prize in the Community Wellbeing Initiative category. I also congratulate the Blackrock Community on their achievement in coming runner up in the Island and Coastal Communities category. Both groups have kept up the county’s traditional strong performance in this competition. It is a wonderful competition which showcases all that is best and innovative in communities throughout the island of Ireland that we will continue to support,”.stated Joan.

Champions of Ireland

The late Michael O’Connor would have been so proud to see his beloved Bellurgan make history by becoming the first Dundalk Schoolboys League team to win a national title. The U15 side were the underdogs going into the final against highly decorated Dublin outfit St Kevins but they edged a thrilling contest 3-2 in the final which was played in Abbotstown on Sunday afternoon. Michael O’Connor who passed away two years ago was affectionately known as Mr Bellurgan and helped turn the club into one of the best run outfits in the country. The Flynn Park club brought an army of supporters to Abbotstown on Sunday and they saw their side take an early lead through Jack Long who put the peninsula outfit ahead after just two minutes. St Kevin’s who are based in Whitehall in North Dublin are renowned for producing some of Ireland’s most talented footballers over the years including the likes of Liam Brady, Damien Duff and Jack Byrne. It took the Dublin side just five minutes to get back on level terms

Brilliant Bellurgan are Champions of Ireland. after falling behind with Andrew Featherstone curling an excellent shot beyond the reach of Dan Ferguson in the Bellurgan goal. Back came Bellurgan and they scored a second midway through the opening half when Caolan Murphy fired a rocket past the Kevin’s keeper to make it 2-1. That lead lasted all of five minutes with St Kevins responding for a second time as Sean McGrath finished after some good work out wide from the Kevin’s winger. Now it was Bellurgan’s turn to respond and they did so with aplomb three minutes before the break thanks to some great pressing from Sean O’Hare who dispossessed the Kevins defender before setting up Ruairi Traynor who finished with

ease from close range. The second half saw Bellurgan at their defensive best as they repelled everything the Dublin side threw at them. Once the final whistle blew supporters ran on to the pitch to embrace the players who had just made history by winning the National Cup title. According to team coach Richie Watters the victory was for every single person who helped the club get to the point where they are today. “There are a whole bunch of people who know who they are who have worked tirelessly down through the years to make Bellurgan FC into the club we see today. That victory was for them and it’s a moment those lads will never ever forget. I’m absolutely thrilled for them and very proud.

Myself and Sean Murphy coach the team and we’ve been with them nearly three years at this stage so we know them inside out. I’d have to say they weren’t at their best in the final but that doesn’t matter once you get the job done and they did that alright. It’s brilliant for the whole community and the reaction from our supporters when the final whistle went will stay with me forever,” stated Richie. BELLURGAN: Dan Ferguson, Seán Holland, Shea Connolly, Michael O’Shaughnessy, Daniel O’Neill, Kyron McGee, Sean O’Hare, Joe O’Hanlon, Ruairí Traynor, Fionn O Tuathall, Caolan Murphy. Subs: Andrew McArdle, Cian McKenna, Jack Long, Calvin Mooney, Oran McInerney, Josh Condon.

Louth Covid Volunteer Event

To coincide with national efforts to acknowledge the contributions of volunteers during the pandemic, Louth Volunteer Centre with the assistance of Louth County Council held a ‘Covid Volunteer Recognition Event’ in County Hall, Dundalk on the evening of Thursday, 19th May 2022. The evening began with a live video link to Dublin Castle where the Minister of State, Joe O’Brien T.D., spoke to all Volunteers both in Dublin Castle and throughout the country at various venues who simultaneously held similar events. This event was one of a number of initiatives held during this, the 2022 National Volunteering Week. Cathaoirleach Pio Smith then locally acknowledged the fantastic work of the Louth Volunteers, commenting “The efforts of Volunteers here today simply cannot be over praised, to many people the work done by you the Volunteers was the lifeline to keep them going.” Kayleigh Mulligan, Manager of Louth Volunteer Centre, who coordinates Volunteer efforts throughout the county said “The events being held across Ireland this evening highlight recognition of the importance of valuing volunteers and volunteering, and showcasing the difference that volunteering makes in communities. Volunteering is a key part

Kayleigh Mulligan speaks to attendees. of the community response to any emerging situation. While many services effectively shut down, in certain areas there was a greater demand for volunteers than ever before.” The Chief Executive of Louth County Council, Joan Martin spoke of existing links having been made stronger between the council and the Volunteer community on foot of the creation of the Community Call Line during the pandemic and praised all who assisted those in great need. A total of 87 Individual Volunteers were recognised at the

event, having been selected through a nomination web portal and assessed locally by the Volunteer Centre. The volunteers who so generously gave their time freely in response to the pandemic, performed a variety of tasks, from cooking and delivering meals, collecting and delivering shopping and prescriptions, giving people lifts to hospital and appointments when restrictions were at their highest, fundraising, sourcing and obtaining PPE for vulnerable groups, writing to nursing home residents, and being an ear at the end of the phone for those who needed it, to name but a few. A letter of thanks from An Taoiseach was provided to all Volunteers nominated, along with a badge designed by primary schools organised by the Department of Education. A goodie bag was also provided by Louth County Council as a token of appreciation. Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern, and Superintendent Charlie Armstrong representing An Garda Síochána joined the celebrations to show appreciation of Volunteer efforts on behalf of the Louth Branch of the Gardaí. The event was also attended by local Councillors, Senators and Oireachtas Members, with professional musicians, Glas Quartet bringing a beautiful classical touch to the evening.

The National Enterprise Awards 2022 is fast approaching and founder of Phytaphix.ie Dr. Conor Kerley will represent county Louth. The National Enterprise Awards celebrates indigenous Irish companies who are innovating, creating new products, generating employment and developing export markets. Phytaphix is a scientific nutrition company, creating whole-food, plant based nutrition products. The company has a very strong

vision and purpose, borne out of Conor’s diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis back in 2003, when he was just 16 years old. A dedicated athlete, Conor’s health condition shifted his focus from sport towards human nutrition and dietetics. His determination, coupled with years of professional education, experience and research, lead him to the creation of Phytaphix, a range of immune support and nutritional products. Conor is no stranger to receiving awards and acco-

lades. Phytaphix has been awarded a World Food Innovation Award, an Irish Quality Food Award and many others. Speaking this week, National Enterprise Awards Co-ordinator for Louth, Sarah Mallon explains “This is the most prestigious event of the year for micro-enterprises in Ireland. Conor’s exceptional research and knowledge, coupled with his mission to improve public health through high quality nutrition, is what drives Phytaphix onwards. The

team in the Local Enterprise Office Louth are proud to have supported Conor since the start of his business journey. We will be cheering him on at this year‘s awards and hope to see him bring home one of the awards.” The event, hosted by RTÉ’s Bryan Dobson with guest of honour Minister Damien English, will take place on Thursday, 2nd June at The Round Room in The Mansion House Dublin. DkIT students support Irish language recognition protest Dundalk Institute Technology Students Union (DkIT SU) recently attended the Lá Dearg protest in Belfast on Saturday May 21. Thousands of Irish speakers / Gaelgeoirí took to the streets of west Belfast and marched to Belfast city centre. The campaign network An Dream Dearg – which translates as “the red group” – demanded “language recognition, respect and rights”, as well as calling on the UK Government to implement an Irish language law. Campaigners are calling for legislation on the model of the Welsh Language Act passed by the UK Government in the

Student representative Naoise O Cuilin and DkIT SU President Christopher O’ Neill.

President Christopher O’Neill. “Around 17,000 people turned out for the protest. I always knew it was a well-supported movement but I have to say I was a little sur-

prised on the day to see so many people. “It was great to see on the day. It’s a cause that is close to my heart as I’m a gaelgeoir. I went to primary school in Belfast for a few years then I attended GaelScoil Dhun Dealgan.” He added: “I do think after the turnout at the protest and after the recent elections in the North that there will be a positive outcome for the Irish language. “It would be great to see it fulfilled. I’ve always tried to promote the Irish language during my time as DkIT SU President. Hopefully something will be implemented.”

THE Deputy Principal of Dundalk’s new Irishmedium secondary school has said her vision for Gaelcholáiste Dhún Dealgan is “inclusive”. The highly anticipated Gaelcholáiste Dhún Dealgan will be a co-educational, multi-denominational, multi-cultural secondary school. “It’s due to open its doors for first year students in Dundalk in September 2023,” said Gaelcholáiste Dhún Dealgan Deputy Principal Caoimhe Héarún. Gaelcholáiste Dhún Dealgan is open to all children from Co Louth and neighbouring counties who want to learn through the medium of Irish. The Department of Education has sanctioned the opening of a satellite

St Nicholas’s (Green Church) Open Day On Saturday next, May 28th, St Nicholas’s (Green Church) Church and Churchyard will be open to the public from 10 am until 4 pm, with a short talk at 2.30 pm. This year, visitors will be able to have a preview of memorials in the church and churchyard at dundalkchurchyard.ie, the website developed last year with funding from the Peace IV Programme, and which was managed by Louth County Council’s Small Grants Programme and LMETB. Visitors will see a church which originated in the 13th century, and with an interior which has changed little from the mid-19th century. The surrounding churchyard, the only one in Dundalk, contains many memorials from the mid-18th century until burials ceased in 1896. The parish website, stnicholas-greenchurchdundalk. com, displays records of baptisms, marriages and burials from the 1720s until the 1840s, in addition to Vestry records from 1748 to 1806. All are welcome to explore at leisure this lesser known aspect of Dundalk’s history and heritage.

excellent teachers and so much more. “We look forward to meeting future parents and students of Gaelcholáiste Dhún Dealgan shortly.” The new Gaelcholáiste will be under the patronage of An Foras Pátrúnachta, the largest patron of Irish-medium schools and patron to parent school Coláiste Ghlór na Mara. General Secretary of An Foras Pátrúnachta, Caoimhín Ó hEaghra is confident that Gaelcholáiste Dhún Dealgan will blossom just as Coláiste Ghlór na Mara has. “An Foras Pátrúnachta are delighted that the Dundalk community will now have a second-level Irish-medium option for their children,” he said. “With our help and with the expertise of Maedhbh Daltún, Principal of Coláiste Ghlór na Mara,

and her staff, Gaelcholáiste Dhún Dealgan will undoubtedly be a fantastic school to all who wish to receive a multi-denominational, Irish-medium education.” There will be various open days and information evenings in September 2022 for students, parents and guardians. Many activities are planned including Easter and Summer camps to support the development of Irish language skills and the transition of students from primary to secondary school. Caoimhe is visiting 4th and 5th class students in the surrounding schools with further information. In the meantime, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact eolas@gcdd.ie or check out Gaelcholáiste Dhún Dealgan’s social media pages.
