IN a week where the eyes of the tennis world are focused on Wimbledon, one of Dundalk’s most talented young stars has made her mark on the national scene. The highly-rated Aoife Tonna Barthet from Dundalk Tennis Club is celebrating after clinching the 2014 Ladies U-23 Irish Open Singles title, to add to her growing reputation. Aoife, who defeated Eimear Maher from Naas in the final, is one of the top five junior players in Ireland and is only the second female junior from Dundalk to win at a national level. The Transition Year student in St Vincent’s trains at Dundalk Tennis Club, un-
der the supervision of Davis Cup player, John McGahon, and will now travel to Corfu to play two events in an effort to get her first world ranking. Aoife had to fight hard for her title, but in the end her training paid off. Within the same week the 16-year-old was competing in both the U-18 event in Carrickmines and the U-23 Irish Open ladies. She made her way through the pack, playing five competition games in 24 hours, to reach the final in both contests. After a gruelling few days Aoife was defeated in the U-18 final but composed herself for the U-23 final the following day. A total €6,500 was raised at the successful Fitzer’s 5k run, which took place in February and was organised by Peter Fitzpatrick TD with support from RehabCare in Dundalk. The money raised from the run was used to buy 12 iPads for people who use the services at RehabCare’s resource centres in Carroll Village and in Quayside. The new iPads will enable those with disabilities to enhance their literacy, numeracy and IT skills by giving them the opportunity to use a variety of educational apps. The iPads will also be used to document and communicate their daily activities by taking photos of them in work, learning, in community work etc. All of their work will then be linked in to RehabCare’s iPlanit IT programme which takes person-centred planning to a new level by enabling service users and their families to access their plans and goals easily from anywhere. Mary Francis stated that “I learnt how to use the camera on the iPad and now I can take really lovely pictures which makes me happy, I would like to continue to do this’ Anita Guest said “I

use the iPads to look up the internet, write stories and down load music. When we first got them I did a course to learn how to use it. I just love the iPad’ Deirdre Quinn, Community Service Manager, RehabCare in Dundalk said, “The Fitzer’s 5k run was a fantastic event this year and the money raised has gone towards purchasing assistive technology and iPads to enhance the literacy, numeracy and IT skills of the people who use our service, all of whom have a disability. These technologies are a brilliant tool in supporting them to develop their skills. We at RehabCare in Dundalk would like to say a huge thank you
to everybody who participated in this event and to everybody who donated so generously. It was a very memorable day and our service users are now benefitting hugely from the money raised from the event. I would also like to say a very big thank you to Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick for his ongoing support and also to the Marshes and ToolFix who covered the costs of the event which ensured that all revenue raised at the event went directly back to supporting people with a disability” In partnership with the Health Service Executive, RehabCare provides a wide range of high-quality services in County Louth with
almost 100 people accessing its two resource centres located in the Quayside and Carroll Village in Dundalk. Programmes are developed around the needs of the service users through their person-centred plan and can include supports in relation to independent living, personal development, community integration and employment in the community. As part of its resource centre activities, a drama company, Encore Productions, and a horticulture centre have also been established. In addition, RehabCare provides supported accommodation services in Dundalk for five adults and in Drogheda for four adults. Gardai issue warning public with News car scam figures on the increase in Brief GARDAI are warning the public to be vigilant when buying cars after they revealed they have recovered 78 cars in the last three years that were purchased with fake bank drafts and sold onto unsuspecting buyers for cash. There have already been more cases this year (24) compared to 21 in all of 2013. Gardaí are urging members of the public who are buying or selling their cars privately to take necessary precautions before finalising the sale. Criminals target members of the public who advertise their vehicles for sale on Irish classified websites.
They make arrangements over the phone without personally viewing the vehicle to purchase same using a bank draft. This transaction will take place in the evening time, usually a Friday evening. The draft is handed over and the driver receives the vehicle and vehicle registration certificate. The seller is told the buyer is in the motor trade and given an RF105 (Change of ownership to Motor dealer) form with details of a fictitious garage. The vehicle is already re advertised on the internet below the market value to attract at-
tention. It is then immediately resold, sometimes within hours, to an innocent purchaser. Gardai advise to get details of the bank draft in advance and check it is legitimate with the bank/branch it’s purported to be from. Avoid buying a car in a car park and if the seller is unwilling to provide details for verification, walk away. Arrests have been made, but unsuspecting buyers are left out of pocket, one man to the tune of €40k. So, if you are about to purchase a vehicle themselves consider a method of payment that is traceable.

Brendan’s team return from successful Niger trip By Paul Byrne
Brendan McCoy is back in Dundalk having helped to successfully deliver a fire engine, an ambulance and a fire tender to one of the poorest regions in West Africa. The recently retired fire officer was part of a six man team who made the arduous journey to Zinder in Niger, West Africa as part of Plan Ireland’s ‘Fire Engine to Niger Project. The project started in 2010 when Brendan and his fellow fire-fighters heard of the grossly under resourced fire services in the region and decided to try and do something about it. Since then the project has delivered four fire engines, one ambulance and two emergency tenders to the impoverished region with local fire officers getting trained up by Brendan and his colleagues. This is Brendan’s fourth trip to Zinder and according to the man himself it proved to be one of the toughest treks yet. “Even getting to Zinder is quite difficult as it’s a 2600 mile fourday drive from Benin in an old van with no air conditioning. As you
Brendan McCoy during his visit to a school in Niger
can imagine it gets pretty hot in Western Africa with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees celsius. Zinder is a huge region about five times the size of Ireland and the road infrastructure is pretty much non existent. We’ve been slowly getting their fire service up to speed over the last few years and the locals have got to know us and embrace us over the last couple of trips. “We were honoured to be granted an audience in the palace with the King of Zinder who thanked us for all the work we had done in the region. We were greeted with all the pomp and ceremony and it was a wonderful experience I
have to say”, enthused Brendan. The sheer hardships the Zinder fire officers come up against are highlighted by the fact that they have to travel 800km just to fill a water cylinder. This is something that Brendan is looking to fix and he has appealed for anybody to contact him if they can donate a water compressor. “The stuff we take for granted back home is an absolute luxury over here”, explained Brendan. Nobody should have to travel 800km just to fill a water cylinder. It’s crazy. We are already planning for next year’s trip and we will be going back next
June to improve their service a little bit more if we can. “Although the trip is a tough one I have to say it is very rewarding and an absolutely wonderful experience. There is great teamwork and camaraderie between us all and seeing conditions over there make you realise just how lucky you are, We visited a school in the area gave them gifts which had been donated by kids back in Ireland. The sheer joy and excitement on their faces was priceless and I’d like to give a big thank you to all the kids who sent us in toys and bicycles to bring over to them”, noted Brendan.
Assaulted Garda during street disturbance A man who assaulted a Garda during a disturbance in the town centre was sentenced to three months in prison. Mark Gorman, with an address on Avenue Road, Dundalk who is currently serving a two-year sentence, pleaded guilty to the offence on October 21, 2012. The court heard that Gardai
were called to a public order incident on Earl St in which two males were fight. The 30-yearold defendant assaulted one of the Gardai when they tried to intervene. Arising out of the same incident, Michelle Reilly, 46 Castleross, Castletown Road, pleaded guilty to charges of threatening
and abusive behaviour and obstructing a peace office. The defendant had no previous convictions and Judge Flann Brennan dismissed the charges under the Probation Act. Michael O’Connor of 66 Aghameen Park, Muirhevnamor, faced similar charges and he was fined €150 in each case.

Evidence was bordering Monastery NS celebrate a treble News in Brief on the incredible - judge Barn A man was told that the evidence he gave in court was bordering on the incredible as he claimed that a medical condition prevented him from providing a breath sample. Olawale Orungbeja appeared at Dundalk District Court to answer charges of failing to provide a breath specimen after being arrested by Gardai on suspicion of drink driving at Dublin Road on June 13, 2012. In his direct evidence at the conclusion of the case, the defendant stated that he didn’t refuse to give a sample but that
as he was a diabetic his low blood sugar levels at the time prevented him from doing so. He stated that he told the Garda that he needed a soft drink to boost his sugar levels and he was given one at the Garda Station. He added that despite asking to wait for 15 minutes for the drink to take effect, the Garda immediately asked him to provide a sample. Mr Orungbeja said he tried to provide a sample but was unable to do so, but that his offer to provide a blood sample was refused. After considering the
evidence, Judge Flann Brennan, imposed a conviction and fine of €500 while disqualifying for four years. “I have no doubt that the prosecution evidence is truthful and correct. I have substantial doubts that what this man is saying is truthful or reliable, and is bordering on the incredible. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that his client lives locally and the loss of his licence would have an impact on him. Judge Brennan fixed recognisances in the event of an appeal.

After the game the captain Karl Gillespie thanked the Friary Boys for a sporting game, Cumann na mBunscol for organising the competition and team managers Dermot McCreanor and Leanna Cusack.

Novena documentary recounts actions of local priest Novena is an award-winning short documentary film that captures the groundbreaking moment when a Dundalkbased Catholic priest welcomed two members of the LGBT community to address his congregation and speak
of their experiences of being gay and lesbian in Ireland and growing up feeling excluded by Catholic doctrine. Having been inspired by the story of a mother in his church, who recounted her gay son’s feelings of rejection
by the catholic community, Fr. Michael Cusack chose to make the theme of this Novena- The courage to be yourself. He reached out to Kay Ferriter and Stephen Vaughan, two members of the LGBT community, and invited them
to speak. Knowing his community to be a welcoming one, he hoped that the outcome would be positive. Novena documents their powerful speech and the aspirations of one priest for a
more inclusive church. Novena won Best Documentary at the Kerry Film Festival 2013, Best Film & Television at GALAS 2014 and was joint winner of Spirit Of The Festival at GAZE LGBT Film Festival 2013.

Fashion event secures monitors for hospital By Paul Byrne
Pupils from Castletown Girls School enjoying their dress up day on friday
Man told he leaves court with nothing to be proud of A MAN was told that he had nothing to be proud of despite walking out of Dundalk District Court without a conviction. Colm McDonnell of 19 Lios Mead, Blackrock Road, Dundalk, was told by Judge Flann Brennan that he was acceding to a request to have the charge dismissed “with considerable reluctance”. At a previous sitting, the court heard that the
45-year-old defendant was charged with engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour in a public place after a Garda overheard him ask two AfricanIrish teenagers, “Where is Africa?”, on June 8 last year. Gda Pearse Doherty, who heard the comment himself, stated that it was said on the beach in summer with a lot of people around.
During the original hearing, solicitor, Dermot Lavery, stated that his 45-year-old client had been at a family barbeque earlier and while he was intoxicated, he meant no harm by what he called a “meaningless remark”. In making his ruling, Judge Brennan stated that while he was satisfied that the words used and the behaviour was highly offensive
in its suggestibility, he was not satisfied that it went as far as what was envisaged under the legislation. “It is with considerable reluctance that I must accede to the application to dismiss”, he stated, and when the defendant thanked him, he added: “Don’t thank me. You don’t go away from this court with anything to be proud of – quite the contrary”.
Local women have secured funding for two new saturation monitors in the Neo Natal Unit in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital thanks to a special event held in the Crowne Plaza on Sunday. Mother-of-three, Noelle Grant, hosted a fashion spectacular and despite the good weather and Father’s Day commitments , women from Dundalk flocked for the extravaganza. The fashion swap was organised by Noelle after her recent experience of the unit when her daughter Isabella was born recently. Noelle spoke about the exceptional staff at the Neo Natal Unit and how they go above and beyond the call of duty not only to the newborns but also to support the parents.
situation would have been much harder to cope with. We are overwhelmed by the community’s support and we have reached our target by holding yesterday’s event and also by PayPal donations overnight”, said Noelle. The funds raised will buy two saturation monitors for the unit which are life saving equipment, they monitor oxygen levels to determine if babies need ventilation, stop breathing. The inspiration for the event came to Noelle from her experiences as a new mums finding a new wardrobe with
a new body shape. She decided to give other women the opportunity to boost their wardrobe be decluttering what they didn’t wear and acquiring what they will. Noelle was particularly grateful to Nicola Scanlon and her sisters. Such was the success, you can pencil in the date for next year as both Noelle and Nicola plan to make this fundraising project an annual event. Donations are still being accepted up until Wednesday June 18, through the PayPal account irishellie25@hotmail.com

Germany will win it. They are a strong physical team and will be able to cope with the tough conditions out there. They can also play a bit as well which helps!
I’m going to have to say Brazil are going to win it. My wife is Brazilian so I’d be in trouble if I picked anybody else!
Brazil are the favourites to win it but they haven’t really impressed me. For me it’s between Argentina and Holland and if I had to pick one I’d go with Argentina simply because of Messi.

Jamie McElroy I’m going to have to say Argentina simply because of the Messi factor. He’s a genius and he could well drag them the whole way through.
Anthony Mulholland It’s a tough question because it’s quite open. If I had to pick I’d probably go with Argentina but I’d have to say that Chile have been the most impressive so far.
Teenager Aoife is tennis star in the making
Continued from Page 1 Aoife says she had no expectation of getting so far in the U-23 category and only really entered to gain experience and get some practice matches in. “She was the more weary of the two players and needed to find some inspiration to turn her day around,” said her coach, John McGahon. “It was my first senior win, I was really happy about it, I beat someone I had not beaten in two years so I was really very happy,” said Aoife. “All the hard work paid off in the end, it was a special moment, it was the first of many wins, hopefully”, she added Her coach describes her has having an aggressive baseline game, a big forehand and steely determination to improve every day. “Aoife has become a

The club was established little more than a year ago by a few fans of the sport and has been going from strength to strength since. “We started out small enough, but we have been recruiting bodies and laying an excellent foundation for the future of the club”, said Sarah. The popularity of the

So far the team have won two of three games and are hoping to makeup for their one loss to Tyrone who they are set to play next “It was a fantastic match and we learned a lot from Tyrone, they are undefeated so far so it will be our biggest game so far,” said Sarah.
Man thought he was RCNE recruiting behaving appropriately helpline counsellors
A man who thought he was behaving appropriately when he put his arm around a woman who was out walking in Carlingford at 2am pleaded guilty to an assault charge when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. Patrik Rosiak of 21 Clois na Manach, Carlingford, also admitted taking his father’s car without permission and crashing it at Mullatee, Carlingford on July 2, 2012. The court heard that on
July 22 a woman was walking in Carlingford when the defendant approached her and put his arm around her neck. She spurned his advances. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that it was regrettable that his client came before the court for two matters in a short space of time. In relation to the assault he stated that Mr Rosiak had thought he was behaving appropriately, but he accepts
his actions constitute assault under the meaning of the act. Mr MacGuill revealed that the 20-year-old was originally from Poland, works as an operative and lives with his family. He added that compensation in relation to the crash had been dealt with. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case until September 17 for a Probation Report.

Sheds targeted Girls’ school present cheque to SOSAD again by thieves By Paul Byrne
U nscrupulous thieves have once again targeted the Men’s Sheds just a month after eight hanging baskets were stolen outside of their premises in Seatown. Peter Gray who has been involved with the Men’s Sheds since their inception arrived down to the sheds on Monday morning to find the side window smashed in. Thankfully the thieves failed to get inside and nothing was taken but given the fact this was the second time in a month the sheds have been targeted Peter is appealing for any help in finding whoever is responsible. “It’s very disappointing that thieves would target us again given that we are working very hard just to keep the place open and we need every single cent that we raise to stay open”, explained Peter. “We had an incident
here last month where eight of our hanging baskets were stolen and I’m wondering if it’s the same crowd again. “Unfortunately the Gardaí couldn’t find any information to help us catch the thieves and I’m guessing it will be the same again this time around”, he lamented. “I came to open the sheds on Monday morning and I saw glass everywhere and thought we’d been ransacked. Thankfully the thieves couldn’t get into the shed and they left without anything. “If anybody saw anything on Sunday night or early Monday morning let us know and hopefully we can help catch whoever is doing this”, added Peter. The Men’s Sheds funding ended last year and they rely on fundraisers and selling on goods that they make in the shed to keep the doors open. The sheds are open
from 9.30am to 1.30pm every day for members of the public to drop down and purchase the wonderful array of items made in the shed including birdboxes, wheelbarrows and garden furniture. All funds raised help to ensure the sheds stay open. Louth Men’s Sheds project started by the Netwell Centre and Louth County Council targets men at risk of isolation or experiencing major life changes. The project is very simple and has one criteria, men. The ‘shed’ environment encourages men to share skills and learn new ones for example, skills in wood turning, mechanical work and horticulture etc. Socialising is a large part of the project too, providing opportunities for the development of new friendships as well as the renewal of old ones.
On their very last day in primary school the 6th class students of Castletown Girls School took a few minutes out to hand over a cheque for €250 to SOSAD. The girls who made their confirmation earlier this year decided to put some of their money they received on their big day towards SOSAD. €250 was raised and Barry Watters was on hand to gratefully pick up the cheque from the generous 6th class students. Barry who has been involved with SOSAD since 2010 thanked the girls for their generous contributions and outlined the importance such donations have for the self funded charity. “On behalf of SOSAD I’d like to thank all the girls for getting together and making a donation to us. Money raised goes a long way to help people in our community who have been affected by suicide. We’re a non profitable

—this week’s answers—
A man who bit a night club doorman on the ear was branded ‘cowardly’ by a judge at Dundalk District Court. Judge Flann Brennan made the comment as he sentenced Richard Gorman of 185 Ath Leathan, Racecourse Road, Dundalk, to three months in prison. “People who bite are cowards and it is an incredibly cowardly thing to do”, stated Judge Brennan after hearing the evidence against the defendant. The court was told that on
September 16, 2012, Gardai saw the defendant involved in an altercation with staff members outside a night club. He was in a volatile state and one of the doormen reported that he had been bitten on the earl. His ear was bleeding and there was a small puncture. Mr Gorman was very violent when arrested and attempted to kick a Garda when they tried to put him in the patrol car. Solictior, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client has since been diagnosed with epilepsy
and requires treatment, and for some time his behaviour had been misunderstood. He had been drinking a lot on the night in question and can’t remember a lot about the incident. Although he accepted that it was a serious matter, it was the first time he had been involved in such an offence. In pointing out that he took an extremely serious view of the incident, Judge Brennan noted that the defendant had a bad record. Although he ac-
DkIT community engagement At a landmark event in Dublin Castle on Monday 16 of June, Denis Cummins, President of Dundalk Institute of Technology, was among 20 Presidents of Higher Education Institutions to publicly sign up to the ten point Campus Engage Charter on Civic and Community Engagement. The Charter was launched by Minister for Education and Skills, Mr Ruairí Quinn T.D. who congratulated all involved in the realisation of the Charter. Campus Engage is a national
initiative which works with 17 Higher Education Institutions to enable and embed civic and community engagement activity across campuses and communities in Ireland. Campus Engage promotes community-based research, community-based learning and volunteering. Many community-based organisations currently work with the staff and students at DkIT and this allows greater scope for ‘real life’ problem solving and critical thinking in a community workplace.
cepted that past offending may have been misunderstood, he stated that this didn’t absolve him as he imposed a three month sentence. Judge Brennan also imposed a one month sentence in respect of the defendant’s involvement in an incident on October 21, 2102. Mr Gorman pleaded guilty to threatening and abusive behaviour and obstructing a peace officer on Earl St. Judge Brennan fixed recognisances in the event of an appeal.

SOSAD recognised at awards ceremony The work currently being undertaken by the SOSAD organisation has been recognised after they were nominated for a Pride of Ireland Award. Making the shortlist for the award was a huge honour for the group that has service locations locations in Drogheda, Navan, Dundalk, Cavan, Carrickmacross and Tullamore, according to Peter Moroney. “It was a real honour to be even considered for such a prestigious award and it is all due to the wonderful volunteers in the charity that do so much to help others. Every one of them should be so proud”, he explained. SOSAD works to help anyone affected by suicide and/or depression as well as anyone unfortunately bereaved by suicide. They have the volunteers with the skills and experience to help anyone that calls or contacts SOSAD, and every caller can rest assured that they will be treated with care, respect,
and complete confidentiality. SOSAD is a voluntary charity with over 300 volunteers spread throughout the organisation, each one playing their own role and ensuring that every caller and client receives the best possible care and support. SOSAD volunteers will be taking a number of courses over the coming year which will benefit the hundreds of clients they see every week. SOSAD is also updating the induction programme provided to every new volunteer to include the online suicide awareness course ‘esuicidetalk’. The aim is to ensure that every client gets the best and updated care and support and hopefully give a lot more people, different and viable alternatives to suicide. If you are struggling with life, and need the professional care and support provided by SOSAD then call them at 042 9327311 and they will be delighted to give you all the help you need.
Unique Carlingford landscape is the focus of new study
Some of Europe’s leading academics have released a study which centres on the unique landscape of Carlingford. The paper, which was published on Friday last, focuses on research completed at the extinct vol-
canic centre at the village. Since the mid 19th Century, scientists have been puzzled by the frequent co-occurrence of two fundamentally different lava types - basalt and rhyolite - at many volcanoes. This phenomenon is
known as “bimodal volcanism”. Crucially, the mixing of basalt and rhyolite is a major cause of violently explosive eruptions, but no consensus has been reached on how bimodal volcanism actually originates.
This new article, offers a fresh perspective on bimodal volcanism using detailed chemical analyses of rocks from the Carlingford Igneous Centre. The researchers suggest that a key control could, in fact, be the crustal rocks that
13
lie deep below the erupting volcano. The paper, entitled “Bimodal magmatism produced by progressively inhibited crustal assimilation” was published online by Nature Communications.
This research was initiated when the two lead authors were at Trinity College Dublin, and was funded by both Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology.

Pupils celebrate coming of summer
Castletown Girls looking forward to the summer
Pupils and teachers in Castletown Girls School celebrated the oncoming of summer and the end of another school year with their
annual showcase. The pupils have been planning and practicing since Easter for the end of year show with each class choos-
ing and arranging their own shows. It was all about a keen sense of humour for this year’s show with songs from Grease and sketches
of classics like Robin Hood. The pupils were eager to show off all their hard work for their mums and dads.
Tidy Towns efforts being frustrated
The efforts of Dunleer Tidy Towns committee to improve the appearance of the town have been frustrated by vandals. In recent months the organisation has been locating about 15 new planter boxes around the town. It was a big task filling them up and planting them along with all existing planter boxes around the town. Each planter box had a round or
long centre piece shrub called Buxus which fitted in well with the summer flowers all round it. This planting had just been competed about a week when one outside the Garda Station and one on the centre island at Collon Road went missing. The one on the centre island was replaced with another shrub and within 12 hours it was stolen again.
Following this a few days later it was noticed that four more of these shrubs missing from two planter boxes on the Dundalk Road. The Tidy Towns alerted the Gardai to the stolen shrubs. Some flowers were also taken. As a result of the vigilance of one resident in Dunleer, Gardai are now working on information as they investigate the incidents.
Another good weekend L for Cuchulainn cyclists a IT was a good weekend on the road racing front for Dundalk cyclists with the action starting on Saturday in Newbridge for the Paddy Flanagan Memorial. In the A1 race Bryan McCrystal was part of the winning move and in the last 5km he attacked his breakaway companions to take a solo win. This was Bryan’s first competitive outing since a bad accident forced him out of The Rás and shows he is back to full fitness. It also shows that his form is building nicely ahead of this weekend’s national championships, being hosted by Mullingar. Bryan will be looking to secure medals in both Thursday’s TT and Sunday’s road race, a gruelling 190km race that will see him going toe to toe with Ireland’s best cyclists, including Nicholas Roche and Dan Martin. Bryan’s sister Eve will also be seeking another national medal to build on her bronze from 2013. On Sunday the action switched to Banbridge, where in the A4 race Gary Mortan found himself in the winning move of 12 riders. In the sprint for the flag Gary took third position in the tough

Louth’s bathing waters among best in country With the warm weather having arrived and sun staying out for more than a few minutes, all over Ireland people have descended on local beaches to enjoy a swim. Luckily Louth’s bathing waters are consistently among the best in Ireland. Shellinghill, Templetown, Clogherhead and Seapoint are the main bathing areas in the county; all opened for the season and all have received a clean bill of health from the Environmental Protection Agency. Two of the main beaches along the Louth coast are Port and Clogherhead with surveys identifying as many as 200 people a day visiting each. While the bathing waters at Seapoint are safe to swim in, The EPA says the Termonfeckin river discharges to the sea within the bathing area. The EPA monitors the water quality upstream of this river the results of which are

poor. However they will sound the alarm if there are any changes to the conditions. Shelling Hill/Templetown is one of the most popular places to visit for locals and tourist during the summer. The beach regularly has a lifeguard on duty and the bathing waters themselves are of high quality. However the reports from the EPA pointed to dog owners as a contributing factor to the decrease in beach quality. A number of dog owners failed to clean up
after their pet and faeces was found on the beach by the environmental agency’s officers. Louth County Council is expected to monitor the beaches throughout the bathing season. Should any abnormal bathing water result be obtained the council will take appropriate action which will include warning notices at the beach and on the council website as well as getting information to the EPA and HSE. Local beaches support similar marine life, there
are a few plant species, the most common being marram grass and Ammophila arenaria. of Global Operations for Europe, Middle East and Africa. In 2012 Paypal announced the creation of 1000 jobs in Dundalk over four years, followed by its sister company EBay Inc which created 450 jobs in the same business park. This latest announcement takes the total planned workforce in the former Xerox plant to 1,850 by 2018. The direct jobs boost almost pales in comparison to the potential indirect increase as it was
indicated that as many as 1,000 more jobs could be created in the region as a result. The Dundalk Chamber of Commerce said that the announcement was a strong vote of confidence in the region and that the area has been good for PayPal and can be good for others. “Dundalk’s workforce has proven to be adaptive and responsive to change. The educational facilities of the DKIT and others are producing the right caliber of person for the new industries of tomorrow,” said
Mark and Daniel Kelly.
Paddy Malone Chamber PRO. Mr Malone said that at their recent meeting there was an “an air of cautious optimism that the tide had begun to rise,” but that it was paramount that they work to ensure the hard pressed retail sector feels the benefits. Following the announcement Seamus Kirk TD described the region as “a real hub for Contact Services jobs. “The IDA has invested a lot of time and resources into promoting the North East to investors in recent years and that is really paying off”, he said.

Many events planned for Pride festival
The Music Of The Beatles
Following a sold-out show in the Spirit Store on Easter Sunday, The New Originals present a celebration of The Beatles finest music at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Dundalk this coming Friday, June 27. Performed by a 20 piece ensemble the show features live harp, string, brass, and woodwind sections along with the guitar, bass and drums quartet. The band will begin at 8pm, playing 50 songs in a set that showcases every era in the Beatles prolific career. A great night guaranteed for all Beatles fans.
One of the brains behind this hugely enjoyable show is Paul Campbell who plays guitar piano and arranged the songs to be as close to the originals as possible. He promises a great night for hardcore Beatles fans as well as the more casual followers of the band. “We play a huge amount of songs in our set which includes all the classics as well as little known gems that only hardcore fans of the Beatles would probably recognise. We play for about three hours so as you can imagine we have a huge setlist which we aim to recreate to be
as close to the original recordings as possible. “We had a great night in the Spirit Store over Easter and people seemed to enjoy the show so hopefully we can deliver again in the Crowne Plaza on Friday evening,” laughed Paul. Tickets €15 and are available at the reception of the Crowne Plaza Dundalk, The Home Bakery (Jocelyn Street) and B Sharp Music (Williamson’s Mall). Tickets will also be available at the door on the night. Doors open at 7.30pm with show starting at 8pm.
Members of Dolmen Theatre Group presenting Maeve Montgomery of The Alzheimer’s Society (Louth Home Care) with a cheque for €1,460 proceeds from the raffle of their very successful production of “Lend Me A Tenor”.

The packed schedule of the coming Dundalk Pride Week has been revealed with five days of events planned. The festival takes place from July 14 to 20 in a number of venues across Dundalk under the theme ‘Because Family Matters.’ The series of events kicks off with the official Pride Party on Monday July 14 in Dundalk Outcomers Centre. This is followed up the next day with the Diverse LGBT Families Seminar in the County Museum. Here local people and other families from around Ireland will challenge the traditional understanding of family after which the ‘Related’ exhibition opens. Related is a photographic exhibition taking place in the Museum Dundalk exploring everyday lives of LGBT people. Hopes are high that the weather will hold for the open music session in the court yard of Dundalk Outcomers. Singers and musicians are invited to come along to the BYOB event on the Thursday evening. It will be the idea lead into the annual Pride Party which takes place on Friday night in the Fairways. The Pride Party comes to a close on Saturday July 19 at the Pride Open Day. The Outcomers Centre in Jocelyn Street is transformed by festive decoration, craft and colour, artisan foods and BBQ music, garden games and more. Everyone is welcome to go along to the free event from Noon to 5pm.

Theatre students learn new skills Young, budding actors of Co Louth joined forces for Louth Youth Theatre Day taking part in intensive master workshops. Dundalk Youth Theatre, MAD Youth Theatre as well as Dundalk and Droichead Youth Theatre indulged in a day of developing their onstage skill set. The workshops included “Shake-
speare with a twist” an exploration of the voice as a stage tool. Participants discovered the richness of their own voices and how to use it to the best effect. The students were treated to an Introduction to Stage Combat which explored the building blocks of safe on stage combat sequences. Partici-
pants were equipped with different set pieces and asked to devise their own stage battles and bouts. It should come in useful for the further exploration of the Bard’s works as some of Shakespeare’s most famous scenes involve dialogue during duels. The Musical Theatre ensemble brought musical theatre performance to life by integrating the skills of singing, dance and acting while rehears-
ing a scene and ensemble number from a popular musical. The day was facilitated by two specialist practitioners, Barry Morgan and Evelyn Purcell. Organisers said that a brilliant day was had by all the participants, who gained a whole new set of skills to put into practice and are looking forward to using the found skills to create new and exciting theatre in Dundalk.

ERIC Begg and Vincie McGuinness are back on the fundraising trail as they get ready to host the second annual Cooley Mountain Trek for the Fighting Blindness organisation. Eric, from the Lisdoo Road, has been involved with the ‘Fighting Blindness’ charity for over ten years now and has raised thousands of euro thanks to various charity events such as chapel gate collections, quizzes and sponsored walks. The sponsored walk takes place on the 12th July with two walks to cater for different levels of experience. The first, longer, walk starts at 11 a.m. with a free bus departing from The Lisdoo at 10.30 a.m. for those without transport. The second shorter walk
begins at 12 noon and there will be another free bus departing The Lisdoo at 11.30 a.m. Both walks will be guided and walkers are advised to wear proper clothing and footwear. There will be refreshments with finger food and music at The Lumpers afterwards. Sponsorship cards are available from Eric at 086 3193675 or Vincie at 0872512605. Otherwise people can register on the day, €20 for adults and €5 for children accompanied by an adult.
