Adam’s cancer fund raiser a huge success Elaine thanks local community as GoFundMe target of €25k is reached By Tamara O’Connell THE mother of a young Louth man who is being treated for a rare form of cancer has said “the family is on a high” after he finished his last day of chemotherapy on Monday, October 22. Elaine Duffy from Greyacre Road, Kilkerley told the Dundalk Leader that her 20-year-old son, Adam, “is in great form”. Adam was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, which is rare form of aggressive cancer, when he was just 19-yearsold.

“Adam was very active and loved playing rugby with Dundalk, Landsdowne, the Leinster squad and the Ireland camp,” said Elaine. “He first noticed something wasn’t right with his health when he started experiencing severe back pain and was diagnosed with a large tumour on his spine.” Adam underwent a 12hour surgery during which the surgeons removed the tumour as well as bone and muscle, which has affected his ability to walk. Ardee kingpins of Louth once more following magnificent comeback By Peter Harmon After a thrilling Sunday of Gaelic Football, St. Mary’s have confirmed themselves in the history books of Louth GAA. Never seen before in the wee county, St. Mary’s have not only done what very few clubs have done before them, winning Senior and Minor Championship on the same day, but of doing so back-toback. “We’ve done a lot of work, especially with the juveniles over the past decade,” Ardee St. Mary’s Chairperson Mickey Rooney stated. “The lads have been excellent and are out training two or three days a week, and even go out on days we don’t

Ardee St Mary’s retained the SFC after a nailbiting victory over Nh Mairtin. have training.” St. Mary’s Minor beat a strong Stabannon/ O’Connells/JohnMitchells/Lannleire side 1-14 to 0-6. The senior game was truly a nail-biting experience for any Mairtins or Marys fan or neutral alike. Asked on how he was feeling about going 1-05 to 0-01 down on the first few minutes of the first half, Mickey Rooney said “I will be honest, I was panicking. This is a good Mairtin’s side, as everyone knows, but I knew this Mary’s team doesn’t panic. We’re usually a team that would go for goals, but we just chipped away at them, taking our points.” A very bright start from Naomh Mairtin saw Sam Mulroy assist Evan Whelan’s goal before the Louth captain bagged three points in quick succession to open up an early lead. It made little difference however as Ardee managed to pull back eight points with no reply from Naomh Mairtin to bring it to 0-9 to 1-5 at half time. Ryan Rooney, the son of Mickey, was starting up front for St. Mary’s.

Ryan, who had had a bright future ahead of him, went over to America to play soccer under scholarship, but ended up breaking his leg tragically. Out for two years, the future didn’t seem bright for the young prodigy. But the past didn’t seem to show as he got himself on the scoresheet against St Patricks in the semi-final. Ryan scored 1-4 to help St Marys through to the final. Naomh Mairtin took the lead once again, with Tom Gray getting on the scoresheet and Mulroy adding to his already impressive scores. But St.Mary’s didn’t give up pushing for a result, with Jonathon Commins and Dáire McConnon leading on their side. With ten minutes remaining Ardee took the lead once again. Naomh Mairtin couldn’t capitalise on the chances they were gifted, with Mulroy missing a free. And what a game this was, an unlucky day for a Mairtins fan, but the Joe Ward Cup is returning to Ardee. Another inspiring story came from it, Mickey Rooney himself had

been involved in a car accident a few weeks prior, whilst out for a morning walk. He had been hit by a car and was in the hospital for two weeks with fractured ribs and internal bleeding. “Just shows you the ups and downs to life,” Rooney commented when asked how he felt from being stuck in the hospital, to then watching his son score 1-4 against St. Patricks, and then see this amazing day for St. Mary’s as they did what no other club in Louth Championship history has done, winning Senior and Minor Championship backto-back.

When Bobby Charlton came to town Dundalk Leader 25th October 2023

Following the death of Manchester Utd legend Bobby Charlton on Saturday, pictures began to pop up on social media of the English midfielder in Dundalk down through the years. His first visit to the town was in September 1973 just a few months after he had played his final game for his beloved Manchester Utd. He had recently been made player manager at Preston North End and he brought his new team to Oriel Park for a pre-season friendly. Jim Malone was Dundalk chairman at the time and according to Jim’s son Paddy his father spent hours trying to convince Bobby to play five minutes to help boost ticket sales for the game against Dundalk. “I can remember my Dad begging Bobby to play a few minutes so that we could tell supporters that the legendary Bobby Charlton was playing, which would almost ensure we’d have a full house in Oriel. Bobby, however, said he couldn’t do it as he had only ever played

Bobby Charlton and Jim Malone. for Manchester Utd up to that point in his life and he wasn’t ready to put on another shirt. I think the game took place just before Jim McLaughlin came into the club so it was John Smith who was the manager at the time,” recalls Paddy. “There was a reception for him in the Imperial after the game as far as I remember and I can vividly remember having to lodge the takings for the game into the bank that evening for Dad. I was about

Bobby Charlton in Dundalk in 1988 with his soccer school.

eighteen at the time and I can remember the buzz locally from youngsters around the town seeing their hero in the flesh. Unfortunately, management didn’t work out for Bobby with Preston relegated that year while his brother Jack actually got Middlesboro promoted to Division 1 that same season. Bobby’s first love was always Manchester Utd and he would later join the board and continue his lifetime’s association with the club right up until his death,”

Brian McGuinness’ treasured autograph. and Ireland. Charlton had explained Paddy. Bobby would return set up the school in 1976 to Dundalk in August and over the years he 1988 via his popular had unearthed a number Bobby Charlton’s Soc- of players who would go cer School which he had on to have fine careers in brought all over the UK the game, none more so

than ex England captain David Beckham. Des Dunleavy had helped bring the soccer school to Dundalk for a couple of days with the event sponsored by TSB. Brian McGuinness who was fourteen when Bobby first came to Dundalk in 1973 got his autograph that night in the town hall and he was involved with Seatown FC in 1988 when Bobby’s soccer school came to Dundalk. “We were involved with Seatown in the

Dundalk Schoolboys League and we brought a number of the boys up to the college grounds in the old RTC (Now DkIT) where Bobby was holding his soccer school. We were more excited than the kids to see Bobby as we could remember how great that Manchester Utd team was. Every kid in the playground was pretending to be either Bobby Charlton, Denis Law or George Best. We used to have a newsletter with Seatown FC where we

would document all our matches and take pictures and we would get it printed up with Liam Gaynor in Dún Dealgan Press. So I would have taken a few pictures of Bobby for our newsletter when he came in 88, and when he died over the weekend I dug up some old pics I had and posted them up on social media which helped bring back memories for a lot of people around town. “I can still remember the excitement when I first met him in 1973. I was working as a paperboy for Tempest in Crowe St and Preston had played Dundalk in a friendly that day with Bobby managing them. I had heard he was in the town hall and my old boss, Helena McCann, got an autograph book off the shelf and told me to run over and ask him for an autograph. He couldn’t have been nicer and I still have that autograph book with his signature inside to this day. He was such a hero to me and many more people of my generation,” stated Brian.

Dundalk Credit Union: Building Global Bridges in Support of PVKS Credit Union Ukraine In a world where community matters more than ever, the story of Dundalk Credit Union’s extraordinary week of unity, inclusivity, and leadership speaks to the heart of their values and purpose as a member owned credit union to the people of Co. Louth.

l A SHARED GLOBAL COMMUNITY

Last week, Dundalk Credit Union, warmly welcomed colleagues from PVKS Credit Union in Ukraine and the Worldwide Foundation of Credit Unions, as part of their ongoing participation in The Worldwide Foundation of Credit Unions Global Bridges Programme. The visit, in plan for over a year, is as a direct result of Dundalk Credit Union’s dedicated support and commitment to the members and staff of PVKS Credit Union since the start of the war in

Ukraine. Through the Global Bridges programme, directed by the Worldwide Foundation of Credit Unions, a connection was made and when war impacted electricity supply, the community at Dundalk Credit Union stepped in to supply generators to PVKS Credit Union, allowing branches to remain open and accessible to their members. l LEARNING TOGETHER

Over three days, staff in Dundalk Credit Union

shared learnings, knowledge, and experiences in key areas of credit union service delivery. Colleagues from Ukraine learned from their Co Louth counterparts about their operational processes, member excellence programme, digital transformation tools and community engagement. Louth Local Development showed their community commitment lending support with translators across all events.

l SHOWCASING OUR VIBRANT COMMUNITY

A real highlight of the week was a civic reception that showcased the very essence of our vibrant community spirit. Guests from across public, private and community came together with Dundalk Credit Union Board, management, and staff to offer a very big Wee County Céad Míle Fáilte to our Ukrainian and US colleagues. Our visitors had the chance to experience the warmth and charm of Dundalk through the Seek Mural Tour, local shopping, and a visit to Carlingford. We displayed what it truly means to be part of the Credit Union Community. l A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

In a world where some financial institutions strive to be distant and impersonal, this credit union story reaffirms the values of support, welcome and inclusion that remains our shared global community.

Mike Reuter, Executive Director, Worldwide Foundation of Credit Unions, and the Global Bridges Programme delivered an engaging talk to Dundalk Credit Union staff, neighbouring Credit Unions, and to representatives from both CUDA and the Irish League of Credit Unions, that highlighted the profound impact achieved when credit unions come together to support one another worldwide. This shows the incredible strength and unity in the credit union community, making a positive difference on a global scale. l women leading the way

A significant highlight of this event was the “Women in Leadership” session, where our combined strength shone through. The leadership displayed by women from different corners of the globe deepened our connection, emphasising the long-term values that drive us forward and help us make a positive impact, all the founding principles that guide the credit union community.

St. Martin de Porres Triduum

Louth County Council announce the launch of Brigid1500: ‘Louth Birthplace of Brigid’, a programme of events and initiatives to honour the life and legacy of Brigid. The enduring story of Ireland’s iconic matron saint was celebrated at the launch in County Hall, Dundalk on Thursday, October 19th, 2023 where the programme of events to mark Brigid1500 commemorations in Louth was unveiled. From festivals to live theatre performances, illuminated visual displays, exhibitions, craft workshops and dedicated school projects, the wee county will be home to a series of unique events to mark the 1,500th anniversary of ‘St. Brigid’s’ passing. With the townland of Faughart in north Louth long being held as the birthplace of Brigid, the local celebrations will be especially significant in fostering tangible links to the past, and creating a cultural and meaningful legacy that is reflective of contemporary Louth. The programme will commence with the launch of the Brigid1500 Arts Exhibition which aims to capture the remarkable life story of one of the country’s best known saints. It will feature

original art pieces from the ‘Artist In the Community’ project. A newly designed St. Brigid’s Cloak by the students of St. Brigid’s School, Ard Easmuinn, will also be on display during the exhibition. Dundalk town centre is set to be illuminated with a spectacular lighting show celebrating ‘Brigid of Faughart’ as a beacon of light connecting the past to the present, illuminating her legacy and transcending her story into the future! A series of talks and lectures will take place, covering a range of informative topics around Brigid. Local expert, Dolores Whelan, will be working with Women’s Spirit Ireland and Dr Mary Condren to curate a number of talks. These talks will take place in the Oriel Centre and further details of speakers and topics will be released over the coming weeks. Louth Library Service in conjunction with Louth County Council Arts Office are delighted to announce the return of the Brigid workshops that took place between May and July this year as part of the Brigid Cloak Tour. St. Brigid’s Cross making workshops for local schools will also be held in Dundalk Library. A new live theatre perform-

ance event, which will re-tell the story of St. Brigid from her birth and childhood in Faughart, to her death in Kildare has been specially commissioned for the Brigid1500 celebrations. The event will take place in An Táin Arts Centre on February 1st and 2nd, 2024. The team at ‘Candlelit Tales’ have created a unique performance to commemorate Brigid. Booking for this event will be opening towards the end of the year. The programme will also feature the ‘St. Brigid Of Ireland’ exhibition in the County Museum, which aims to capture the remarkable life story of one of the country’s best known saints. The exhibition will highlight Brigid’s roots in both pagan and Christian traditions, and will explore her diverse interests including dairy farming, beekeeping, the creative arts, and her work with mothers and children. Interesting details on Brigid’s local legacy are currently being compiled and will be accessible through a series of QR codes added to information panels at the

(Pic: Kieran Harnett). On Saturday, October 14th, 2023, County Louth student Ava Plunkett was awarded a Naughton Foundation Scholarship worth €24,000 at a ceremony in the Trinity Business School in Dublin. The award was presented by founding patrons of the Naughton Foundation, Dr. Martin Naughton, and his wife Carmel, who were joined by former Taoiseach, Mr. Enda Kenny, to present winning students with their awards and cheques. Supporting academic and innovative excellence in Irish students, the Naughton Foundation Scholarship Awards are an investment in the future of Ireland’s reputation as a country with outstanding graduates promoting the study of engineering, science, and technology at third level. The County Louth winner, Ava Plunkett, a former student of St Vincent’s Secondary School, Dundalk, has accepted a place studying Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Trinity College Dublin Since its establishment in 2008, scholarships worth

over €6 million have been awarded to over 350 students. The scheme started in three counties and has continued to expand annually to become a nationwide scheme in 2016. There is one guaranteed scholarship (€24,000) for each participating county, with some counties awarded more than one scholarship and each scholarship is worth €6,000 per annum for each year of a student’s three- or four-year undergraduate degree. Ava joins 37 exceptional Irish students who were awarded third level scholarships towards their studies in the areas of engineering, science, technology, and maths. The prize winner’s former secondary school, St Vincent’s Secondary School, Dundalk, was awarded a prize of €1,000 towards their school’s science facilities, for their support of their winning student. More than 250 schools have also benefited from this prize to date with some schools receiving it on more than one occasion. Speaking about the growth

and development of the programme over the past fourteen years, Dr. Martin Naughton has said: ““We are delighted to have been able to help and contribute in some small way to support undergraduate studies in the STEM fields in Ireland since 2008. We are very conscious of the pressures on students to finance their full times studies and with the increased costs they face and are therefore increasing our annual Scholarship awards to €6,000 per annum for all of our new and existing Naughton Scholars €24,000 for their four-year degree. When we meet these young engineers, researchers, and mathematicians I am very happy knowing that we have invested in Ireland’s wealth creators and leaders of the future.” Full details on The Naughton Foundation Scholarships are available on www.thenaughtonfoundation.ie 2024 application form will be available for completion on the Foundation’s website from February 2024.

A Kilcurry woman has taken home a World Champion Ironman medal from an Ironman World Championships competition in Hawaii. Allsún Kelly, aged 31, currently lives in Dundalk and works for WuXi Biologics as a QA Validation Engineer in the Quality Assurance Department. Allsún’s father, Pat Kelly told the Dundalk Leader that he and Allsun’s mother, Briege, are “very proud of her”. “Her mother, Briege, accompanied her to Kailua Kona in Hawaii. The event took place on Saturday, October 14. I was babysitting the dogs and cat at home,” he said. It takes about a week to get over an event like that. It’s very intense because the athletes do it in such a short space of time,” said Pat.

“Allsún has been Irish dancing since she was four years of age with Mona Ni Rodaigh. When the kids were small, we never let them have a day of doing nothing,” he said. “I even built a gym at the house for training and to keep fit. The kids were always kept busy. It was good for them”.

Dundalk Parents and students gathered on Wednesday 18th October to celebrate the distribution of Junior Cycle 2023 results at St Louis Dundalk. There were jubilant scenes when the class of 2023 realised the high standard of the results they achieved through their hard work and support of their parents and teachers. Principal Michelle Dolan, Deputy Principal Mary Gilmore and Year Head Siobhán Higgins all complimented the students on their great achievements as they presented the results on the day. They all reminded them of what they had overcome in recent years and how proud the whole school and their families were. Research tells us only

JUNIOR CERT Principal Michelle Dolan congratulates Marykate Mulholland on her JC results with dad Thomas Mulholland. 2% of students nationally can expect to achieve a distinction grade ( 90%+ ) so students and staff were delighted to celebrate 15 distinction grades across 11 different subjects, demonstrating the calibre of teaching & learning in school. In fact, two talented students achieved 4 x

Distinction grades each! Another strong feature was the number of students who received some learning support or other interventions over the years, and who exceeded their own expectations in the state exams. This is a clear indication of the power of the growth mindset which underpins the in-

clusive vision and ethos of St Louis Dundalk. The students, on their own initiative, all waited patiently until every student had received their envelope and then opened them together, demonstrating how united and supportive of each other the group is. Well done to all!

Dealgan families still waiting on answers states Ó Murchú

The deaths of 23 people at Dealgan House Nursing Home in Dundalk were raised again in Leinster House last week by Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú, who reminded the government that it is almost three years since some of the bereaved families met Health Minister Stephen Donnelly. The Dundalk deputy spoke during debates about services and funding in health ahead of Tuesday’s protest outside the Dáil by campaign group Care Champions, who want an inquiry into nursing home deaths during the Covid 19 pandemic. Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘I will return to an issue I have raised many times, namely, elder care and particularly during Covid. ‘I thought at this stage we would have further information on the inquiry into the State’s reaction to Covid would be and what we would discuss in particular modules. There were several issues with nursing homes. ‘I refer to Dealgan House in Dundalk where 23 families suffered the loss of a loved one during Covid. They have interacted with many ministers by now and many other politicians across

PROPERTY/RENTALS

Dealgan families have been ‘incredibly brave and resilient’ in their quest for truth. He said: ‘Between freedom of information requests and sometimes, when politicians have been helpful, in responses to parliamentary questions, these have provided a huge amount of information but we really need to get down to some form of investigation or inquiry to provide those answers. ‘Those answers are also needed more generally. We constantly talk about best practice and learnings’. Deputy Ó Murchú urged the government to ‘set in train what is necessary to provide these families with the facts regarding any of the questions that remain concerning nursing homes, the HSE and all others involved’. He said: ‘That needs to be done and then we need to make sure there are protocols and best practice for how we go forward regarding elder care in general and also in dealing with the possible pandemics in the future. There are enough dreadful things going on in this world and we do not want to see this beyond that’.

Glenmore AC are ‘All In’ on inclusiveness Dundalk Leader 25th October 2023

16

Glenmore Athletics Club ‘All In’ initiative is going from strength to strength with the club hosting an inclusive training session for kids with additional needs between the ages of 5 and 18. The athletics club which is a community club based at Bush Post Primary School have just completed a six-week indoor programme with classes taking place in the school’s indoor gym. The

programme is now moving outdoors for the next number of weeks with programme coordinator and coach Melissa McCoy inviting local kids with additional needs to join the ‘All In’ group on Mondays between 6:15 and 7pm. “We enjoyed a great sixweek programme in the school gym and now we are inviting kids with additional needs and their parents to join us for the

next number of weeks on a Monday outdoors. We coach skills including hopping, balancing, running, catching and throwing and it takes part in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Parents can stay and run with the children around the track and we have TY students from Bush Post Primary who very kindly come along and volunteer to help with the kids. There are about 28 kids with

special needs in the club and it’s growing all the time and if anybody would like to join us they are more than welcome,” stated Melissa. “We have a strong tradition of inclusivity in the club and through the years we would have hosted Special Olympic events on a regular basis. David O’Hare has made us very proud with his brilliant performances on the track

nationally and internationally. Running is a very safe sport for kids with additional needs and it gives the kids confidence as well as enjoyment and health benefits. I’ve been in the club since I was a kid and I absolutely love coming down and coaching the young kids as well as the All-Star group. “The long-term aim is to introduce regular races for children and help to grow the

competitive element of running. The main thing is to get

the kids out on the track and running and having fun and

weather permitting we will be out on the track every Mon-

day for the next four weeks between 6:15 and 7pm. All

are welcome to come along and give it a go,” concluded Melissa.

Gino’s Diner donation to Polio charity

Dundalk Leader 25th October 2023

Polio Survivors Ireland was delighted to receive over €400 from the staff and customers at Gino’s Diner. Pictured are one of the staff members with the presentation of the cheque to our member, Brendan Moore, a fundraiser for the charity, who lives in Dundalk. With two locations in Clanbrassil Street and Blackrock, Gino’s Diner has two Polio Survivors Ireland collection boxes at their tills. Despite the move from cash to ‘tap’ in recent times, this is a fantastic amount of money to have raised from the generosity of the customers coming into the two premises. Polio Survivors Ireland is very grateful to all the customers of these establishments, who have

Gino donated €400 to Polio Survivors Ireland. shown such great support over the years. Donations to the charity go directly to helping people who had polio as babies or young child and who might need help maintaining their mobility, preventing falls and staying independent, despite

their disabilities caused by polio. At this time of year, of particular importance is the charity’s Winter Heating Grant, a contribution to the high cost of energy and fuel. Polio survivors suffer an extreme intolerance to cold and need heat on, even throughout the

night. This contribution makes a significant difference to many of them, including survivors living in Dundalk. For more information please contact Polio Survivors Ireland, 01 889 8920, email info@ polio.ie or see www. polio.ie.

An Post stamp honours Peter Rice

Dundalk engineer Peter Rice is being celebrated by An Post who have issued a stamp marking the 50th anniversary of Sydney Opera House. Rice was brought up in Dundalk on Castle Road and went to school in the CBS before studying aeronautical engineering in Queens University in Belfast. He found that course boring however and switched to Civil Engineering which led to him getting his first job with architectural firm Ove Arup and Partners. One of his very first jobs turned out to be the one with which he is most associated. That job was to bring to life the idea of the white sails roof which has become iconic in modern global architecture. Rice was part of a small team who worked for three years to help build the distinctive Utzon’s shells and he was assistant engineer on the project to a man called Ian McKenzie. However, when McKenzie fell ill it left Peter in charge of the project which was completed in 1973. Last week An Post

Kieran Rice, Isabelle Rice and Rosie Keane. issued a stamp marking the 50th anniversary of Sydney Opera House. The stamp was unveiled onsite at Sydney Opera House by Consul General of Ireland Sydney, Rosie Keane; Kieran Rice, son of Peter Rice, the late Irish Structural Engineer who made possible the building’s infamous ‘white sails’ roof, Isabella Rice and Kerryn Coker, Co-Chair of Arup Australasia, the original design company. Irishman and Structural Engineer Peter Rice (1935-1992) played a central role in creating the revolutionary modern structure using his mathematical expertise and artistic intuition to convert concrete, steel and glass

into a world-renowned building, famous for its iconic, white sails roof structure. His son Kieran Rice responded to the stamp issue, saying “We, Peter Rice’s family, are all really touched that his contribution to the Sydney Opera House design is being recognised with this wonderful First Day Cover of the commemorative stamp on 50th anniversary of the completion of the Sydney Opera House. The stamp is a lovely artwork in itself and Peter’s quote on the FDC is very well-chosen and is often used in our family to motivate his grandchildren. Peter was a proud Irishman, who worked

across the globe on many iconic projects, but the Sydney Opera House was where it all started. He moved to Sydney in 1963 for three years with his wife, Sylvia, and two young daughters Julia and Heidi. Our time in Sydney had a huge impact on our family – Kieran was born there, and Sylvia still visits friends every year who were made at that time. Peter was very proud of his involvement with the Sydney Opera House design and construction especially his work on programming the setting out of the sails. He would have been humbled to be recognised in this way in his native Ireland.”
