Clean sweep for brilliant Broadhurst

Muirhevna M ór southpaw boxer amy Broadhurst has always been a special talent as her heaving trophy and medal cabinet can attest to but in 2022 the 25-year old has shown the world that she is one of the very best boxers on the planet by claiming three gold medals in three major tournaments and doing so with relative ease. it’s been a year to savour for the Glenmore Park girl who was invited to the uS earlier this year by her childhood hero Katie Taylor to help the Bray boxer prepare for what was a succesful World title bout against amanda Serrano in Madison Square Garden. Last Saturday evening amy dominated her light welterweight (63kgs) european final against ukraine’s Mariia Bova as she sealed gold with an utterly dominant performance to add european gold to the World and Commonwealth gold medals she had won earlier this year. Straight from the off, Amy was on the front foot and her power was clear to see as Bova backed off continu ously before receiving a standing count with two of the five judges giving the Dundalk boxer a 10-8 round.

Broadhurst contin ued to dominate in both the second and third rounds as she eased to a very com fortable victory on all five judges scorecards with probably her best performance of the tournament. And to cap off a magnificent week in Montenegro, Amy

was deservedly named ‘Best Boxer’ at the tournament which saw her receive a massive trophy for her efforts.

According to Amy’s father Tony that best boxer award was the icing on the cake of what has been a won derful year.

“We are all so proud of Amy and she de serves all these rewards for all the hard work

she has put in down through the years. To see her get the best boxer of the tourna ment was very special for Amy. She really wanted to win that tro phy and she was very emotional during the medal ceremony as she knew she had achieved everything she wanted to this year. At the start of the year we would have sat down and

made plans and tar geted the three golds at the World’s Com monwealth and Euro peans but 99% of the time those plans don’t materialise so for her to achieve what she set out to do was brilliant,” explained Tony.

“To see her lead out the Irish team on their arrival home at Dublin airport was wonderful for us to watch as she

was leading out a team of very talented girls including an Olympic champion in Kellie Harrington. Myself, my wife Sheila and my son Paul all travelled to Budva to watch her and she was flawless in every bout. She’s getting stronger and stronger and she is hit ting so hard. It’s almost freakish how hard she hits and she still hasn’t

reached her peak,” added Tony.

“We had a lovely evening with just the family on Monday night and it was really spe cial to have us all there to toast Amy’s success. The plan is to let her rest now for the rest of the year as she needs to recover mentally and physically after what has been a tough year. Everybody wants

a piece of Amy now with people asking for interviews and inviting her on to podcasts but we need to protect her and let her rest before she gets ready for the elite championships in January. Sometimes you need to sit back, relax and reflect on your achievements and that’s what Amy will do now until January,” concluded Tony.

Energy support scheme unlikely for Carlinn Hall states Minister

The issue of the communal heating system in Dundalk’s Carlinn hall was raised with environment Minister eamon Ryan and An Taoiseach Micheál Martin by Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú recently.

The Dundalk deputy asked Minister Ryan about a ‘be spoke solution to get people through a bad winter’ in Car linn hall.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘Long term, we need solu tions, whether they will in volve geothermal or wood chip instead of gas.

‘In the short term, how ever, we need to help these residents, whether through a business support scheme given to the likes of (energy provider) Frontline and then passed on to the residents, or some sort of cap or credit. We need a bespoke solution

to get people through a bad winter’.

In response, Minister Ryan said he had spoken to the

Louth TD a number of times about Carlinn hall.

Minister Ryan said: ‘he is correct; there is a small number of significant difficulties the residents have experienced having made what was, in my mind, a very good investment in a communal heating system but having been caught out because of the high price of gas.

‘I do not believe that this would qualify for the tempo rary business energy support scheme, TBeSS, although we will have to see when the specific provisions of that scheme are put in place, nor do I believe there could be a cap specifically for such cir cumstances.

‘There are alternative so lutions they can switch to, whether wood pellet or other systems, for managing it’,” stated the Minister.

‘War on drugs well and truly lost’—Ó Murchú

LegISLATIoN around the coercion of children by drugs gangs and the need for a citizens’ assembly on drugs were raised by Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú in Leinster house last week.

The Dundalk Sinn Féin TD spoke a number of times about drugs issues and the im pact drugs are having on the town. he supported legislation brought forward by Sinn Féin TDs that would make it a spe cific criminal offence for drug dealers to use minors as part of their gang.

Deputy Ó Murchú said:

‘In some cases these are very vulnerable kids who are at the periphery of society. We all know that these drugs gangs do this to protect themselves and have a buffer between themselves and the breaking

of the law.

‘This will be the third time this week that I say on the floor of the Dáil that the war on drugs has been well and truly lost’.

he highlighted drug debt intimidation, in particular. he said: ‘We all know of the

debt that starts with €300 or €400 and then jumps to €800, €1,200 to €15,000 to all sorts of crazy figures.

‘Unfortunately, when they discover a family, which with the best of intentions wants to actually pay this debt, they think that they can get

through the gap, but all that they are telling the dealer is that the tap is open and they will keep coming back.

‘In some cases, we are deal ing with really clever drug dealers. I have seen drug deal ers in Dundalk who have been very careful in who they target and the houses they burn.

‘I have even seen instances where some of the most im poverished people I know have had their houses burnt.

‘I say to myself that there is no way this guy thinks he can get money out of them, but it is not about them. It is about the next person who will get the knock on the door, so that they will know what is com ing.

I am very glad that we now have what we did not have a number of years ago, that is,

drug squads up and running to tackle this issue. We will never have enough resources to deal with it. We cannot pos sibly out-police the problems we have at this point. We have to concentrate absolutely on those dangerous drugs gangs and those people who put great pressure on families. We have to deal incredibly harsh ly with those who use kids and vulnerable people.

‘Any kid can fall into this. Some of the best kids I know have found themselves in bad circumstances.

‘We have to deal with fami lies and communities at a far earlier stage’.

A citizens’ assembly is need ed ‘as soon as possible’, Depu ty Ó Murchú said.

he said: ‘I would like to think that the citizens can

be braver and courageous, maybe more so than we are in here. There is a definite need for that. We need to look at novel approaches. I do not think we can continue with the way we are going at this point in time.

‘I have spoken to the Min ister and the Minister of State previously about funding for organisations that are doing great work, for example, the Family Addiction Support Network, Turas, and the Red Door Project. We must ensure funding is provided but we must also deal with dangerous criminals that have communities under the cosh’.

An Taoiseach said it should be ‘early in the New Year’ when a date for a citizens’ as sembly on drugs would be an nounced.

Junior cycle examination results issue date 2022

The State examinations Commission (SeC), intends to issue the 2022 Junior Cycle exami nation results to candidates on Wednesday 23 November 2022.

Noting the very significant examiner short ages which affected marking at both Leaving Certificate and Junior Cycle this year, the SeC has been making every effort to complete the marking in all subjects so that these results can issue.

This year’s Junior Cycle results will be available in schools on Wednesday 23 November 2022. Candidates can also access their re sults online from 4pm on that date noting that the online service is not intended to replace the valuable results service and advice provided by schools at results issue time.

The SeC appreciates that candidates and their parents/guardians may be disappointed that these results are issuing later than normal. This has arisen due to a combination of factors which include a later issue date for the Leav ing Certificate results and, most especially, the impact of a shortage of teachers to mark the examinations over the summer marking pe riod. In most subjects, the number of teachers available to undertake roles as examiners was less than the number required to mark that subject within the normal summer marking window. In all subjects, marking continued for an extended period of time in the summer and with many examiners agreeing to take on additional scripts to mark.

Luca follows in Dad’s footsteps

SEAn Whelan will be every inch the proud Dad as he watches his son Luca make his Táin theatre debut in Arthur Miller’s power ful moving drama ‘All My Sons’ next week.

However, Sean will be watching from the side of the stage rather than with the audience as he too is in the play which runs from the 2nd to the 5th of november.

The play is set dur ing the second world war, and is about a successful business

man, Joe Keller, who has failed to fulfil his social obligations and has failed to recognise the role of society after he is blinded by lust for money during the war.

Sean is well known for his acting prowess in local circles having starred in a number of productions in An Táin Theatre/ Town Hall down through the years including Glengarry Glen Ross, Tuesday’s With Morrie, Copenha gen, Plaza Suite, Lime Tree Bower and Under

Milk Wood. Sean first got the acting bug when he was a first class pu pil in the Friary school when he played Tadhg Teddy Bear in a school production which won him a Féis Mhuirtheim hne and a Leinster Feis medal at just six years of age.

Sean’s uncle Gerry Quigley was a wellknown local performer and his rendition of Santa Lucia was the stuff of legend around town. Sean continued that family tradition of

performing on stage and now the next gener ation is about to pick up the torch as Sean’s son Luca gets ready for his stage debut. Eight year old Luca will play Bert in Act 1 of ‘All My Son’s’ and although he won’t get to share the stage with his Dad he admits the process of learning his lines with his Dad at home was very enjoyable.

“We practice our lines on each other at home and it’s good fun. I am pretty sure I know

all of them now and I’m looking forward to the show. I’m not re ally too nervous about going on stage as I will have my friends and cousin and my teacher in the audience as well as Dad looking on from the side of the stage,” explains Luca.

Meanwhile, proud Dad Sean says it has been a great experience going to rehearsals with Luca and he hopes that someday perhaps the pair can share the stage together.

“It’s been great hav ing Luca come to re hearsals with me and having him at home to practice lines with and I’m really looking for wrad to seeing him get up on stage in front of an audience. Unfortu nately, we do not share the stage in this pro duction as my character only comes in during Act 2 but hopefully in

the future we can do something together. Originally the director had planned to get rid of Luca’s character but when they asked me to play George Deever I asked if they could keep the Bert character in as I wanted Luca to be in the production with me.,” explained Sean.

“He has done really

well and knows all his lines so we are all just excited now to put on the play in front of a live audience. You still get those pre-show nerves which is a good thing I feel and I still love the buzz of playing in front of a live audience. This will be my first time back on stage in a few years so there may be a few more nerves than

usual but I know I will enjoy being back up there. Especially, this time with Luca being in the play as well,” added Sean.

Tickets for All My Sons cost €12 for the Wednesday show and €16 for the Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows (Plus €1.50 booking fee per ticket per person).

Autism Bill passes second stage in the Dáil

DePUTY Peter Fitzpatrick and his colleagues in the Re gional group have success fully progressed the Autism Spectrum Disorder Bill 2017 through Second Stage in the Dáil.

Regional groups mem bers state that no additional delays should be imposed by the government in order to have this Bill enacted as quickly as possible.

According to Deputy Fitz patrick “We will continue to highlight that autism is not

a health issue but a human rights issue and work to wards ensuring that services required by people with au tism are provided in a timely manner”.

The Bill seeks to provide for the development and implementation of a cross Department Multi-Agency Strategy to provide and im plement services for autis tic people. It addresses the inconsistencies that exist throughout the state in re spect of both the availability

and type of services that are accessible to children and adults with autism.

Financial pressure is acutely felt by families who assume full-time caring roles for their autistic children, reporting that exist ing social welfare payments are insufficient to cover the costs of therapy and addi tional support. on average the annual cost per child for families amounted to more than €28,000 related to pri vate services, lost income,

and informal care. Service provision for autistic people should not be discretionary, it should be a right protected in our legislation.

Deputy Fitzpatrick and the Regional group TD’s state that “no strategy has been put in place since the european Commission ap proved the Charter of Rights for People with Autism in 1996”.

The Charter states that autistic people should have the same rights enjoyed by all

eU citizens and these rights should be enforced by legis lation. This has yet to happen in Ireland.

Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick and the Regional members intend to work with all oi reachtas parties and stake holders to ensure that this legislation is fit for purpose and successfully progresses through the next stages in the Dáil.

It will be a game changer for autistic people as it will enshrine their rights in law.

Louth student awarded €20,000 scholarship

On Saturday, October 15th, 2022, County Louth Student, Vanessa Hearty, was awarded a naughton Founda tion Scholarship worth €20,000 at a ceremony in the Trinity Business School in Dublin. The award was presented by founding patrons of the naughton Foundation, Dr. Martin naughton, and his wife Carmel, who were joined by Mr. Simon Harris, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, In novation and Science to award winning students with their accolades and cheques.

Supporting academic and innovative excel lence in Irish students, the naughton Founda tion Scholarship Awards are an investment in the future of Ireland’s repu tation as a country with outstanding graduates promoting the study of engineering, science, and technology at third level. The County Louth winner, Vanessa Hearty, a former student of St Vincent’s Secondary School, has accepted a place studying Engi neering at University

College Dublin. Since its establish ment in 2008, scholar ships worth over €6 mil lion have been awarded to over 350 students. The scheme started in three counties and has continued to expand annually to become a nationwide scheme in 2016. There is one guaranteed scholarship (€20,000) for each par ticipating county, with some counties awarded more than one scholar ship and each scholar ship is worth €5,000 per annum for each year of a student’s three- or four-year undergraduate degree.

Vanessa joins 37 ex ceptional Irish students who were awarded third

level scholarships to wards their studies in the areas of engineering, science, technology, and maths. Vanessa’s former secondary school, St Vincent’s Secondary School was awarded a prize of €1000 towards the school’s science fa cilities, for their support of these students. More than 250 schools have also benefited from this prize to date with some schools receiving it on more than one occa sion.

Speaking about the growth and development of the programme over the past fourteen years, Dr. Martin naughton has said: “We started supporting students in their science and engi

neering studies in Louth, Meath, and Monaghan in 2008 to give back to our area. Our Alumni are an incredible group working in the best Uni versities, research in stitutes and businesses across the world. Each year we hear back from them on the value of this network to them and the connections it has given them across disciplines and Ireland. They are a wonderful group of young people that are giving back to society in their own way that we are very proud to be connected with.”

COBRA Kan travelled to Kil larney to attend the world kickboxing and karate cham pionships from October 8-13. This being the first champion ship to be held since covid 19 fighters were eager to step on the international stage again. Head coach Patricia McQuil lan is well established on the international scene and had no doubt her fighters were go ing to take the competition by storm. With a rich history in world championship medals Cobra Kan have gone from strength to strength over the nearly 40 year in St. Gerard’s hall, Dundalk.

This year Cobra Kan took a team of 7 students to the championship and each one of them put on a fine display of skill and technique. The team is named as Cian and Caolan O’Murchu, Bradley Hutchin son, Catherine O’Grady, Dom inykas Svedas, Roman Browne and Yasmin McDonagh.

Yasmin McDonagh had her first outing on the international scene and is sure to be one to watch in the future. Managing to reach the podium in her first year with a 3rd place finish in two sections she has really made a name for herself.

Then we had a fantastic duo of Bradley Hutchinson and

Caolan O’Murchu. An out standing performance from this pair brought home a sil ver medal in Men’s traditional kata. It was the duos first time performing Kata together and they certainly made their mark. Both students also competed in their respective fighting categories with great might.

Bradley also joined the men’s fight team and came away with a bronze.

Roman Brown fought in credibly hard to get himself a spot in the finals of the boys 13-16 age category. With so many in his division get ting to the finals is a fantastic achievement. Roman fought a well-known Canadian in his final and it was a very tense fight as it went point for point. With the Canadian just beating him in the last second, he took

away a silver medal. Massive achievement for someone his age.

Dominykas Svedas fought incredibly all week to make it to the finals. With a long his tory of medalling at the world championships the pressure was on to keep this up. In fi nal Dom fought a talent Eng lish man. Both fights put on a fantastic display of skill, and both deserved that top spot.

Unfortunately, only one could go home with gold and the English got the winning point right as the final buzzer rang.

A well-earned silver medal for Dom alongside his bronze medal won in the men’s fight team.

Cian O’Murchu proved himself to be fantastic under pressure and fought his way through the men’s 35+yrs cate

gory to the final. After fighting opponents from all over the globe he put his final opponent from Honduras to rest to come away with the top spot on the podium and a well-earned gold medal. He also came home with a bronze in the men’s fight team. And not to mention the golden girl herself. Catherine O’Grady coming home with not one but two gold medals from this championship. She fought in Women’s 18+yrs points and continuous and proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with. Double World Champion is not some thing many can say they’ve achieved and yet Catherine set her mind to it and worked hard to earn that title. She also fought on the women’s fight team.

All are welcome to at tend the open day which is due to take place from 1pm to 4pm at 3/4 Wil liamson’s Place.

“It was all ready to go before Covid-19 and we had to close it during the Pandemic but we have opened it again,” said Cara Cancer Support Centre Committee Secretary and volunteer, Anna Brennan.

“We re-opened in April of this year. We offer services such as one-to-one counselling for people with a cancer diagnosis.

“We also offer reflexology; faith healing; group therapies such as tai chi; knitting and crochet; relaxation and yoga.”

Anna added: “Every thing is free of charge. It’s a drop-in centre also.

Anyone who is over 18 and has been affected by cancer either now or in the past is more than welcome to come in for a chat and a cup of tea.

“We have an opendoor policy and all of the volunteers are trained. If it wasn’t for the people of Dundalk and the surrounding ar eas, the Centre wouldn’t have happened.

“The fundraising for the Centre was phenom enal. We were awarded grant money from Louth Leader of over €197,000.”

She continued: “The fundraising meant we

were able to raise the excess money needed to complete the project.

“The generosity was amazing so we would like to extend a big thank you the general public and to anyone who donated.”

The Cara Cancer Support Centre is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am to 4pm.

Monday 2pm to 3pm: Relaxtion; Monday

7pm to 9pm: Crochet and knitting; Tuesday 6pm to 7pm: Yoga; Wednesday 7pm to 8pm: Tai chi; One-toone therapies are by appointment.

Seán’s poetry book inspired by people and places around Dundalk

LoCAL poet Seán Bran nigan will launch ‘oriel observations: A Book of Poetry’ on Thursday the 17th November at 7:30pm in the oriel Centre, Dun dalk gaol. Seán who grew up on the Fairgreen in Dundalk has been writ ing poetry for as long as he can remember and down through the years his work has featured in the Irish Press (New Irish Writing), Sunday Tribune (New Irish Writing), Sun day Independent, Irish Independent as well as on RTe radio and local radio stations.

In 1993 he was writerin-residence for Louth County Council under the aegis of the arts scheme administered by Mary Cloake. According to Seán he had enough material to write five or six books but he managed to pick out some of his favour ites from down through the years, some of which he has reworked and im proved.

The poems are inspired by the people and places of Dundalk and he has thanked Louth County Council and Create Louth for helping to fund the book. Below is one of the many poems which fea ture in the book.

Adelphi cowboys

it’s nice to see film titles over the open adelphi doors though the heroes of our schooldays ride the silver no more. We had Zorro, and the mounties who always got their man, the g men and the gangsters playing catch me if you can. outlaws in Dodge city, apaches attacking the train, fiery montana sunsets when buffalo roamed the plains. el Paso near the border where flows the rio grande, the dust-up at the Bighorn was custer’s final stand.

Davy crockett met his match down at the alamo (while we had close encounters in the dark of the back row !). they gave us funny glasses to watch King Kong in 3D i noticed nothing special being a half blind child, you see. mrs. Popeye’s a granny (olive oyl before she wed) she had three sailor babies and on spinach kept them fed. micky mouse is pension age but he’ll always be young cause his heart beats with happiness and his head is full of fun. the lone ranger and tonto to Florida have gone while trigger and her fillies romp in miami sun. geronimo and sitting Bull have teamed up with John Wayne in the saddle every sunrise still riding the Western range.

But now we’ve nasty videos where porn and psychos meet the Billy the Kids and al capones are walking around our streets. so it’s nice to see film titles (does the mgm lion still roar, do they still show the trailers ?) adelphi, i’m coming back once more!

North east Runners AC home with Leinster medals

THIS year’s Leinster novice Cross Country championships were held in Bellurgan Park House hosted by Louth Athletics. north East Runners AC entered two very strong teams for the mens and ladies races, where both teams were hugely successful.

The Ladies race was held first and after all the rain and juvenile races, the course turned extremely muddy un derfoot. Out from the shoots Áine Cotter from nER went into the lead ing pack, with her team mate Kelly Breen not far behind. After a gruelling 4km around the tough course Áine battled hard against St. Coca’s AC Aoife O’Cuill and Trim AC Edel Gaffney and came victorious with a bronze Leinster medal. A fantastic result for Áine after months of hard training. Kelly Breen made great moves

in the field and finished 9th in Leinster on the back of a great summer track season.

To make up the nER ladies team was Lisa McCabe 48th, An nMarie Duffy 51st, Clíodhna Hyland 62nd and Pamela Shevlin 75th. This team scored well and clinched the Bronze Club medal. To add to their great runs, Louth secured Silver medals for the Wee County with Áine Cotter and Kelly Breen from nER, Sinead Mc Donald from Glenmore AC and Aoife Fay from

Dunleer AC.

Onto the mens race, the course was in tat ters but they ploughed on for 6km. Out in the leading pack from nER was Donnchadh Hughes charging forward with hopes for top 10. After each lap of the course the athletes were strung out and Hughes fought hard against Olympian John Fitzsimons of Kil dare AC, emerging the better runner coming in 8th place ahead of Fit zsimons. next for nER was David Redmond, and with a sprint finish coming 13th overall in

Leinster. To complete the black and white team was Garry Mulligan 35th, Rory Mulholland 37th, Keith Geoghegan 39th , Paul Hyland 44th, Liam Fergus 47th, Peter McGuinness 48th, Oisin Hughes 55th, Richard Murphy 104th and Ga reth McKevitt 113th.

All great results from the club which resulted in club Bronze for the north East Runners AC. Waiting for the final county results, Louth emerged as winners over every county in Leinster with 6 scoring on the team, including Hughes, Redmond, Mulligan and Mulholland from nER with Liam Mulligan and Colin Leonard from Drogheda and District AC.

It’s eyes on the Louth Senior XC event with hopes for more success for north East Runners AC on the 27th novem ber in Drogheda.
