THE daughter of a woman who ran the mini marathon in Dublin every year until her death is planning to run the mini marathon in June in her memory. Susan Brady is completing the mini marathon this year in memory of her late mother, Joan Brady from Ashgrove, Avenue Road. “There will be four of us taking part in the mini marathon in my mother’s memory – myself, my sister Helen, sister-in-law Emma and niece, Alba,” said Susan. “This will be my second year participating in the mini marathon. My mum has 39 of the medals and we wanted to get her the 40th medal. Continued on Page 2

Susan’s run to honour her late mother, Joan Brady Continued From Page 1 “We are planning to get #JogforJoan t-shirts made and will wear them on the day. She

was such an inspiration.” Joan - who worked as an advertising executive - had participated in every event since the

mini marathon started in 1983 until she sadly passed away at her home in March last. She took up walking after seeing people in Central Park while on a trip to New York and set up the Dundalk Joggers and Walkers in the early 1980s. The group met twice a week and many firm friendships were formed among members. The group also took part in the Dublin City Wom-

en’s Marathon every year. “She was ahead of her time. She was doing it for people to connect. When I was at her funeral so many women told me she had had such a positive impact on their mental health,” said Susan. Joan completed her last mini marathon in 2019, aged 80. Over the years, she helped to raise thousands of Euros for various charities.

“It was such a shock when she died as she was always so full of energy. She had an amazing way of connecting people,” she said. “We want to get her 40th medal. Her spirit lives on. It’s important as it’s the first mini marathon post Covid-19 too. “She was a very special lady and we’re very excited to remember her and raise some money for charity.” Susan with her mother Joan Brady.

Dearbhla brings gold home to Dundalk Dearbhla Tinnelly joined an elite group of Irish female boxers who have returned from the European Youth Championships with a gold medal. The Dundalk light heavyweight (81kg) southpaw dominated Ukrainian Karine Airapetian to seal a gold medal at the Youth (U18) championships following a brilliant week in Bulgaria. Only five Irish girls have managed that feat with Amy Broadhurst being the first to do so. Dearbhla, from Knockbridge, joined Clann Naofa boxing club in Muirhevnamor when she was eleven years after she was diagnosed with dyspraxia which causes issues with coordination and balance. Dearbhla’s parents had heard that boxing was a good way of improving

Dearbhla during the medal ceremony in Sofia last week. co-ordination and balance and so Dearbhla was brought under the wing of Clann Naofa and Ireland boxing coach Jim O’Neill. Seventeen-year-old

Dearbhla took to the sport immediately winning silver at her first European Championships in 2018 before claiming bronze a year later. Having picked up

gold in Sofia, Bulgaria last week the talented teenager can now lay claim to the full set. According to her coach Jim O’Neill his student’s victory brought

him to tears last week. “I am so so proud of Dearbhla. She is a phenomenal talent and such a hard worker. She never moans or complains, and she deserves everything that is coming her way. When she got up on that podium and sang the national anthem it honestly brought tears to my eyes. As a coach you get very invested in your fighter, and you know how hard they have worked to get to the stage where they are standing on the highest podium. “Dearbhla came to me first when she was just a kid and has progressed so much over the last six or seven years. She has now won three European medals and I don’t think she fully realises just what a huge achievement winning the European gold

is. She dominated all her fights and won the final in very convincing style against the Ukrainian girl. I thought the semifinal was going to be tough but she breezed through it. I was at the championships as an Ireland coach and it was a record breaking tournament for us with eight medals in total which is our most ever, but obviously for me Dearbhla’s was by far the best of the lot,” stated Jim. “We will target the worlds now which take place later this year and that’s next on the agenda for Dearbhla. I told her to relax and take a week off but she wasn’t having any of it and she was back in the boxing gym on Monday night. That’s the measure of the girl and that’s what it takes to be a champion,” he added.

Proleek Dolmen By John Noonan

I follow the path that knelt its way down to the great stones, standing for a thousand dawns. No wind in morning branches as sun slides Annaverna mountain, brightening gable ends of distant houses. Its rays reach over this landscape, like the fingers of some God pointing out secrets stones can hide.

The Laurel Walk Thomas By Seán Brannigan McConville The Laurel Walk was lovely, no rush to get home soon On my way home from heaven. We were smiling, me and the moon. Behind the twinkling kitchens, a field of football dreams. Where De La Salle ghosts gather, to rejoin their football teams Two busy midnight lovers, ignored St. Patrick’s bells. And followed where desire leads, a confetti of leaves fell. I wrapped the shadows round me, with stars beneath my feet. Floating by amber gardens, along October streets. Alone in a sea of silence, I held peace in my hand Enough to share with everyone In our lullaby land. The Laurel Walk was lovely, I kissed the sleepy sky. And pulled the curtain on the moon. We went home, God and I.

Cúchulainn’s Stone By Marian Brannigan The wounded hero staggers from the lake edge to the pillar in this lonely field, leans against the slaty slab, fastens his body to cold stone. Glimpsing Slieve Foy cloaked in a gauze of mist, his last shudder splits the slate. A raven hovers overhead, pierces the evening air with discordant throaty croaks .

By Dominic McKevitt 1945 - 2013 The lights have dimmed The crowd’s gone silent The fat lady is standing The ref looks at his lines He puts his whistle to his mouth I dreaded this time this day When the mighty step back And all that remains is legend Leaving a legacy of great hope For us lesser beings For you my friend the mighty Who placed me on your shoulders So that I could see what you saw To let me feel what you felt In your gracious kind and sharing I am a better man for you Who gave me hope when There seemed to be none But nothing faded The dream is still alive Oh how I will miss you And your earthly sayings That made me smile “We’re not here for a long time” “We’re here for a good one”.

UK Government plans on immigration control threatens tourism in North Louth/South Down Sinn Féin Councillor Antóin Watters has reacted angrily to proposed legislation by the British Government that will require international travellers to have additional documentation to cross the border from North Louth into South Down and is seeking clarification on how that would affect the Narrow Water Bridge crossing. Cllr Watters said “we are trying to build a bridge

to connect South Down and North Louth and enhance tourism in the area by selling Carlingford and the Mournes as a single tourist area. Connectivity is central to that and is one of the core selling points of the Narrow Water Bridge project. The Joint Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Louth County Council and the Newry, Mourne and Down District Councils

is all about promoting the economic development of the whole region. They are now going to be working with their hands tied behind their backs. “The UK government, once again having no regard for Ireland at all, are legislating to tighten up their borders and are insisting international travellers going from South to North will need an Electronic Travel Authorisa-

tion (ETA) and yet on the other hand are denying that there will be further checks at the border. We all know how far we can trust a British MP. According to the British Immigration Minister, Kevin Foster MP, this legislation, although not finalised yet, will be in force by 2025.” Cllr Watters wants clarification as to “where will that leave us regarding any cross border greenways,

—this week’s answers—

Setanta Triathlon is delighted to host the Blackrock triathlon. The race was cancelled for the last two years due to the Covid pandemic and the club is raring to go for the 2022 event. The sprint distance consists of 700 metre swim, 16km bike and 5km run and the Blackrock event is ideal for anybody who has never completed a triathlon but would like to. Race Director, Peter Tomany says that the swimmers are never out of their depth and this is a major advantage for nervous swimmers. In the 17 years that the triathlon has been run in Blackrock, there have been hundreds of people who can count Blackrock as their maiden triathlon. Indeed, many of these have progressed to longer triathlon distances including half-ironman and ironman races. We can promise all competitors a safe and enjoyable day. The focus is very much on fun and enjoyment for all who want to try a triathlon and whose objective is simply to cross the line on the main street in Blackrock. As always, the support of the residents and businesses in Blackrock is appreciated, as well as an Garda Siochana, Order of Malta and Blackrock Tidy towns. The race starts at 10AM on Sunday June 12th. cycle paths or the Narrow Water Bridge? When the area is being sold to international travellers do we tell them, well you can only go so far and visit half of the area unless you have extra authorisation to travel? The whole border is a farce and the ‘couldn’t care less’ attitude of the British government is tiresome and damaging to this area.” Cllr Watters will be

seeking clarification on the issue and is urging the Irish Government to do likewise. “We cannot allow tourism in this part of the world to suffer anymore or have anything jeopardising the Narrow Water Bridge project because of the border and the consequences of having a government in Britain that has a complete lack of understanding of and an even worse attitude towards the Irish people.” Cllr Antoin Watters.

€10,000 donation to ‘Ireland for Ukraine’ The Dundalk 0327 Branch of UNITE the Union have made a ten thousand euro donation to Ireland for Ukrane fundraising. Branch Secretary Willie Quigley got unanimous support for the donation when he raised the Ireland for Ukrane fundraiser which Irish Red Cross are involved in at the recent Branch AGM where he was re-elected to serve for another 3 year term. He spoke about the terror, torture, death and destruction that the people of Ukrane are suffering along with the thousands who are fleeing for

their life to other countries like Ireland after their homes were bombed to rubble. UNITE 0327 Branch make donations annually to worthy causes and charities or organisations that cater for the youth. The needs of such groups have increased since the onset of the Covid pandemic.

At Christmas gone by, the Branch donated €13,000 across a range of these worthy causes which is separate from the Ukrane donation. UNITE General Secretary Sharon Graham has encouraged Branches and members to support the stricken people of Ukraine.

Gus and Catherine’s fundraiser for organ donation

A LOUTH man who received a kidney donation from his wife is organising a fundraiser in Cooley during Organ Donor Awareness Week. Augustine (Gus) Goss and his wife, Catherine, from Kilcurry are holding a Golf Classic on Friday, April 29 in Greenore Golf Club. The event is being held to celebrate the first anniversary of the success of Catherine’s donation of a kidney to Gus which took place at Beaumont Hospital on April 26, 2021. “People have really thrown their support behind this event. It’s fabulous and I’m so grateful to everyone,” said Gus. “I’m so glad to be back, as I didn’t think I would make it to be honest. But I stuck to the renal diet and did seven months of dialysis.” Gus and Catherine have two sons, Pierce and Liam, who were a great support to them. Gus also praised their son’s girlfriends, Denise Buckley and Aimee Hanlon, for all they did for them. “They were always available to help us and we had a lot of neighbours who came and dropped over food. It was just a super response,” he said.

“I’m a member of the Lions Club and I was inspired to do something to give back to those in need.” Gus and Catherine want to shine a light on the importance of organ donation for transplantation and acknowledge the important and life-saving work done by the transplant and dialysis teams in Beaumont hospital. They also want to raise the profile of the services offered by the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) whilst also raising funds to support their continued delivery. The 4-ball scramble event has attracted a lot of support with over 45 teams signed up to take part and 100 plus sponsors. Gus is very appreciative of the support from kidney transplant recipient Stella Hoey, from Laytown, Bettystown who has been working alongside him to ensure the success of the event. Stella and Gus both share a passion for golf. The first time they met was while in hospital a few days after Stella underwent a kidney transplant from a deceased donor and Gus and Catherine were about to undergo a living donor kidney transplant. Gus was anxious about the

operations that he and his wife Catherine were about to undergo and Stella, a former secretary at Laytown Golf Club, helped put his mind at rest. Gus (65) had become very unwell in 2019 as he was heading towards kidney failure but under the care of Prof Conlon and staff at Beaumont Hospital including dietitians, for whom he has great praise, he managed to stave off dialysis for some time meaning that he only had to undergo dialysis at home (seven nights a week) for seven months. Mr Colin White, National Advocacy and Projects Manager, Irish Kidney Association and Team Manager for Transplant Team Ireland said: “The Irish Kidney Association is delighted that the kidney donation and transplantation between Catherine and Gus has been such a great success and we are very happy that Gus is joining Transplant Team Ireland to play golf internationally and Catherine is also joining as a supporter. It will be great to have them both as part of our ‘extended family’ of Transplant Team Ireland.” Gus concluded: “I’d like to thank the hospital staff, the players and sponsors for all their help and support.” Gus and Catherine Goss.

Senator McGreehan congratulates Dundalk Counselling Centre on 40 years of incredible service

Friday 22nd April saw Dundalk Counselling Centre celebrate their 40 years of incredible service. It was established in January 1982 initially in response to the distress caused by rampant unemployment at the time. Friday’s celebrations brought sunshine and hope when the Centre opened its doors to many organisations and local groups to showcase what is on offer at the centre. It also gave an opportunity for many to learn about the service with a live broadcast from the Centre by Dundalk FM throughout the morning, conducting interviews, with board members, staff and celebrating the strong connection Dundalk Lions Club has with the Centre since its beginning in 1982. Senator McGreehan who often speaks about the power of nature and

trees in particular trees in the process of healing and health donated an Oak tree to mark the 40 years. McGreehan has an initiative called Míle Crainn Na hÉireann which aims to highlight the importance of native irish trees for our environment and the important place they have in our history. McGreehan noted

“Dundalk Counselling Centre over its 40 years has helped so many people locally. They have been standing tall and dignified over that time working incredibly hard looking after those in need. I felt that the power of the mighty native Irish tree; the oak would symbolise perfectly the centre. It is a tree of stature, of

wisdom of protection and strength and this is exactly what this centre is.” “I want to congratulate Liz McGuckin for her great leadership, the staff, the volunteers, the board members and all those who support the service. I look forward to seeing the next 40 years of growth of the service”.

After a two-year absence due to the Pandemic, ‘The Great Dundalk Gaels Walk’ returned for its fourth outing last Saturday and organisers couldn’t have wished for better weather. The walk took place across the Cooley mountains with walkers meeting at the Lumpers for the event which acts as a vital fundraiser each year for the Gaels. Dundalk Gaels have been part of the local community of the town for nearly 100 years. They are involved in promoting GAA games and positive lifestyles through coaching, games and social activities for hundreds of

children and adults, both male and female from nursery level to senior and beyond. Their facilities are used by schools, colleges and community-based organisations. The club are always looking to the future and ways that they can improve facilities for existing and future generations. One of the club’s many ambitious projects is the installation of state-of-the-art floodlights to enable them to continue to cater for these demands. With that in mind the club set a target of €2500 to be raised from the walk and with money still coming in that target has been reached much to the de-

light of the event organisers. Dundalk Gaels chairman Danny Watters thanked everybody who took part in the walk as well as those who helped make it happen. “We had almost 150 people out walking and raising money for the club, and I would like to thank each and every one of them for their support. I would also like to thank our own committee who worked tirelessly to put this together and we were rewarded for the hard work with absolutely fabulous weather on the day,” stated Danny.

birthday. “Simply qualifying to participate in this event is, in itself, a superb achievement, but to win a ‘world medal’ is the ultimate goal and I’m so proud of these dancers for pushing so hard during the last couple of years to maintain their standard of dancing” says Dearbhla Lennon, one of the teachers at the school. “It just goes to show that hard

work really does pay off!” As the week progressed the successes just kept coming with the under 13 girls taking an admirable 6th place in an international field of competitors. The Under 16s were next with the mixed Ceili being crowned World Champions on Holy Thursday and the girls team placing 6th against a huge

field of teams. More success for solo dancers then with ‘finalist’ medals awarded to Odhran Reel, Layla Kieran, Amy Preston, Simon Clarke, Holly McAlevey, Katie McAlevey, Emma Dunne & Megan Mackin. “Dancers have to participate in ‘heats’ and must ‘recall’ to make it to day 2 of the competition. They must recall again to make

it to round 5, the final round. We’re beyond thrilled that so many of our soloists had the honour of performing their set dances for the final round. It really is a testament to their dedication and hard work over the previous years and months.” says Dearbhla. Easter Saturday saw the u19 ladies dance their hearts out to achieve a top 5 finish but perhaps the highlight of the week was on Easter Sunday when the Senior Ladies were crowned World Champions and a short while later the school secured both 1st and 5th place in the Senior Mixed- two stunning ceili competitions. The Waterfront Hall was certainly painted red that night! An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha (the largest Irish dance governing body) celebrated it’s 50th World Championships this year after a 2-year postponement due to Covid. It was also Móna’s 50th

World Championships as a teacher, making it a particularly special one this year. “After 2 years of extraordinary preparation for this event it was both terrifying and exhilarating to see the dancers get back out there on stage” says Mona. We’ve all been through the mill but I’m so proud of these young dancers and their resilience. They simply are incredible. Like so many others we worked on Zoom throughout the pandemic but we got some unbelievable support from the community also. This time last year our dancers were working outside in the grounds of Na Piarsaigh GFC using shelter on rainy days provided by Pelican Promotions. We are eternally indebted to both Na Piarsaigh & Pelican and owe some of our World successes to them as we simply couldn’t have done it without them!” “I’m also so proud of my daughters Ciara & Dearbhla who did all the

work with the ceili teams this year. It was no joke trying to train teams during a pandemic when one or more members was permanently in isolation! We also get great help from Frieda Gray & Geraldine Hughes with our solo dancers- we’re very lucky to have them. Our school is really like a big family and we were so grateful throughout the week to have past pupils come and support us, parents help with preparing the dancers for the stage and everyone really pull together to create special memories. It takes a village as they say. Here’s to a year-long celebration as we welcome the globes back to their Dundalk home for the next year!” Scoil Rince Mona Ni Rodaigh have classes for boys & girls aged 4+ in Muirhevnamor, Knockbridge & Crossmaglen. Classes are offered for both competitive & non- competitive dancers. See www.monanirodaigh.com for details.

Powerful Prayer in Desperate Times of Needs

Shoulder wound of Jesus Oh loving Jesus, meek Lamb of God, I a miserable sinner, salute and worship the most sacred wound of Thy shoulder, on which Thou did bear Thy heavy cross, which tore Thy flesh and lay Thy bones as to inflict an anguish greater than any other wound of Thy most blessed body. I adore Thee, oh Jesus most sorrowful. I praise and glorify Thee, and give thanks fully to Thee for the most holy and sacred and painful wound. Beseeching Thee by that exceeding pain, and by the crushing burden of Thy heavy cross to be merciful to me on towards heaven along the way of Thy cross. In Jesus’ name (make request Amen to all). Trust in Minister is broken warns local ASTI rep The regional representative for the NorthEastern branch of the ASTI has spoken of the broken relationship between local teachers and the Minister for Education Norma Foley. Ray Nolan, a teacher at St Mary’s Diocesan school in Drogheda believes trust between the two parties are at an all-time low following what he describes as a ‘litany of broken promises to teachers unions’ since she took up her role in 2020. Ray was speaking in the week where the ASTI held their annual conference at which the Minister for Education spoke last week. Among the major issues outlined by teachers at the conference were teachers pay, oversized classrooms and the Minister’s plans to reform the leaving cert. According to Ray, the lack of funding in the education system in

recent years has been a major bone of contention for teachers “Ireland ranks last out of 36 developed countries for investment in education as a measure of our national wealth or gross domestic product (GDP) as was shown in a report from the OECD last year. Our classrooms are grossly underfunded and we need help from the government,” insisted Ray. “All these issues came to a head over the last couple of years when COVID arrived at our doors and put us under enormous pressure while highlighting the lack of resources we actually have. We have a Minis-

ter who we feel has not been truthful with us and the trust we have in her is pretty low right now,” added Ray. “Minister Foley told us that the changes to the Leaving Cert last year would be a one time thing due to Covid but shortly afterwards she made this big announcement about a major overhaul and reform of the Leaving Cert system. To us a reform would imply that the system is badly damaged which we fundamentally disagree with. “We also have issues about the treatment of new teachers coming into the system who we feel are very unfairly

treated. They are getting treated differently with regards to pay and there are a number of teachers who are coming out of college qualified only to be told that they are only going to get maybe eleven or twelve hours of work a week. They are on standby for when teachers are sick and they are expected to just be on call and accept the fact that they will not be working full hours. “The attractiveness of the job is unfortunately at an all time low and the Minister needs to realise that students are going to be put off going into teaching if she doesn’t treat the sector with the respect it deserves. The whole teaching sector could be in dire trouble in a few years if things are allowed to continue the way they are going,” warned Ray.

Grim discovery for Councillor McGeough

Sinn Féin Councillor Pearse McGeough said he was sickened by the latest dumping near Dunleer. A passerby informed him of the grim discovery on Thursday afternoon of at least ten dead lambs that had been unceremoniously dumped over the bridge onto land in the middle of the river, on the old Belfast / Dublin R132 Road, at Cappogue, near Dunleer. At the scene Cllr McGeough said “I am disgusted at this. No decent responsible farmer would carry out such an act. I have reported it to Louth County Council and the Inland Fisheries have been informed to rule out any contamination of the river. I have also talked to the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) for guidance.” Cllr McGeough advised that “there are procedures in place for farmers to dispose of

The sickening sight of dead lambs dumped near Dunleer last week. dead animals. The Fallen Stock Scheme facilitates the collection and responsible disposal of dead stock. The maximum cost for a sheep would be €30

“For anyone to dump their fallen stock like this is unacceptable and irresponsible not to say sickening and upsetting for the person discovering them. I will be

pressing for an investigation into this dumping and I really hope that whoever is responsible is prosecuted to the full extent of the law. “In the meantime I would appeal to anyone who saw anything over the bridge area along the River Dee on the R132 to please contact the authorities. The discovery was made on Thursday afternoon and based on the rate of decomposition, they would not have been there for very long, I would estimate anytime since the weekend. So anything suspicious that you may have noticed should be reported.” In the meantime, authorities will remove the carcasses and dispose of them responsibly although according to Cllr McGeough, “that may prove difficult because of the location, as they will be difficult to access.”

Stalking and non-fatal strangulation to be made standalone offences—McGreehan Local Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has welcomed moves by Government who have approved the Department of Justice to draft legislation to make stalking and non-fatal strangulation standalone offences. The introduction of these new offences of stalking and non-fatal strangulation form part of the Government’s zero tolerance approach to domestic, sexual and gender based violence, and will be key actions in the Third National Strategy. Fianna Fáil Senator Lisa Chambers first brought forward legislation to make stalking a criminal offence in the Seanad last year, Senator McGreehan co-sign the bill with her party colleague Senator

Senator Erin McGreehan. Chambers. Senator McGreehan commented, “As one of the signatures of the

Bill I am very proud to have been part of this major change in Department of Justice

policy. Stalking is an extremely serious and intrusive crime that can cause devastating psychological distress. “It may also be a precursor to acts of physical violence. Evidence suggests that having a specific offence leads to greater public awareness and to an increase in the number of cases being reported and prosecuted.” Senator McGreehan added, “Strangulation is highly prevalent in domestic abuse and frequently used as a tool of coercion, often accompanied by threats to kill. While choking and strangling are already illegal, it is hoped that creating this new offence will encourage victims to come forward and report what has happened to them.”
