An Ardee business has asked Louth County Council to remove the outdoor seating area from the front of their premises after the parklet was used as a public toilet by a man on Sunday evening. Martina Coscoran who owns Bliss Tea Rooms on Castle St. Ardee with her husband Mark went to work as usual on Monday morning to find human excrement on the outdoor seating outside her tea-rooms. At first she thought it was dog poo but after looking at CCTV footage she was horrified and disgusted to see that a man had used the seating as a toilet. This is the latest in a long list of anti-social behaviour that Martina and Mark have seen since the seating was put in by Louth County Council at the start of the year. Now the business owners have decided that enough is enough and they have asked for the seating to be removed. “We absolutely love our outdoor seating area and we were very thankful when Louth County Council agreed to give it to us at the beginning Kevin ‘Jock’ McArdle and Brian Keough are all set for the Fatima 70 celebrations this weekend. of this year. Continued from Page 1 We fought hard to get the seating as we are restricted for space and this seemed like it would be a great help to our business that we have fought hard to keep open after the challenges of Covid. “We pay indemnity insurance and it’s up to us to look after the seating which is fair enough. We keep beautiful flowers around the seating and we have colourful plastic chairs outside to brighten up the area. “We have had lots of compliments about how well we keep the seating but we can no longer in good faith to our customers keep this seating due to a number of unsavoury incidents that we have

had to put up with over the last seven or eight months. The latest incident saw a man decidedto defecate on our seating at 10:30 on a Sunday evening when it was still bright and then walk away leaving dirty serviettes he had used to clean himself behind him. It is such a disgusting act and we can’t keep cleaning up after these people,” stated Martina. “Over the last number of months we have seen on our CCTV cameras people leaving used nappies on our seats, people doing drugs, leaving needles as well as leaving vomit and urine. Every morning we powerhose and bleach the seats to ensure our customers are safe but this latest act is just the final straw and we simply do not

feel comfortable allowing customers and small kids sit down where we know these disgusting things are taking place. You wouldn’t see an animal leave as much of a mess and we are both just disgusted by the whole thing. “That evening I rang our local councillor Dolores Minogue to ask her to ask Louth County Council to remove the seating. It’s an awful shame and it won’t help our business but enough is enough and we cannot keep cleaning up after these disgusting people. Keeping a business up and running is hard enough without having to deal with this and as I say this latest incident is just the final A still of man defecating on outdoor seating outside Bliss Tea Rooms in Ardee. straw for myself and Mark.

Lisa Smith sentenced to 15 months in prison

Lisa Smith has been sentenced to 15 months in prison at the Special Criminal Court for membership of ISIS, the Islamic State terrorist organisation. The 40-year-old mother of one cried in the dock as the sentence was read out with the court rejecting her claims that she had gone to Islamic State simply out of a sense of religious obligation and for the innocent purpose of living under Sharia law and raising a family in a Muslim state. The former Irish soldier was found guilty in May of being a member of the group between 28 October 2015 and 1 December 2019 and she was in the special Criminal Court in Dublin last Thursday to hear what sentence would be passed down to her. Mr Justice Tony Hunt delivered the court’s verdict, saying that she

Lisa Smith. went to Syria with her “eyes wide open” having watched videos of Isis atrocities. He stated it was a very serious matter for an Irish citizen to take up allegiance to a foreign terrorist organisation. Although the maximum sentence for membership of a terrorist group

is eight years in prison, Judge Hunt acknowledged that Lisa Smith’s crimes were at the lower end of the scale even though she showed resilience and determination to join and remain with Isis “to the bitter end”. Judge Hunt set the headline sentence at two years and six months

but having considered mitigating factors including previous good character and a positive contribution to society through her military service he reduced the sentence to 15 months. Her sentence was backdated by one month to take into account time she spent in custody following her arrest in December 2019. Lisa Smith’s lawyer, Michael O’Higgins SC, asked the court to release his client on bail pending an appeal but Mr Justice Hunt said there was no basis for a bail application. The matter is now in the hands of the Court of Appeal. After the sentencing Smith was brought to the Dochas Centre in the Mountjoy complex in Dublin where she will remain until it is decided where she will serve her full sentence.

Government need to do more to help families with back to school costs Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú says the government ‘must do much more to support families in Louth struggling with back-to-school costs’. As families start to turn their thoughts towards the return of primary and secondary schools at the end of next month, Deputy Ó Murchú said his office has been contacted by a number of families worried about the rising costs of getting their kids back to school. He said: ‘Families are al-

ready under huge pressure due to the cost of living crisis and will be under real financial pressure to cover these bills. I have been contacted by families across Dundalk and North Louth who are very worried about how they will manage to meet these costs and stay on top of their basic bills as well. ‘This should not be happening. No-one should face this stress or the prospect of going into debt, just to send a child to school’. He said that in June, Sinn

Féin had published a package of measures to cut back to school costs He said: ‘I welcome that the government accepted some of Sinn Féin’s proposals and did finally act to increase the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance. ‘However, they did not go far enough. I am urging the government to ensure they deliver on all of Sinn Féin’s proposals to cut backto-school costs so that families can money back in their pockets urgently’.

Deputy Ó Murchú pointed to the financial stress middle income families are under. He said: ‘People who have one child in school and who have a combined income of €620 or more per week don’t get any assistance in terms of Back To School Clothing and Footwear Allowance. Sinn Féin are proposing that this eligibility is widened to include middle income earners. ‘These are people on modest incomes who are working hard and cannot afford

to pay these spiralling costs. It would be fair and reasonable for the eligibility to be widened. ‘There is still time to act, but the government cannot delay any longer. This issue is urgent. We will be distributing leaflets across the county in relation to our proposals in the coming weeks’. ‘The government must widen eligibility for the allowance now, so that middle income earners can receive much-needed help with backto-school costs’.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘This was a very large grass fire at the rear of the graveyard. The fire services, from Dundalk and Ardee stations, gained access to the area through the graveyard. ‘I saw the scorched field and the fire moving towards hedgerows, which would have been concerning to the firefighters, who successfully contained the blaze so this did not happen.

‘I commend the fire service for their quick response and professionalism at the scene. The smoke was noticeable across a long way across Dundalk. I am not aware of how it started, but I would encourage people to be incredibly careful over the weekend in relation to BBQs, discarded cigarettes and naked flames in grass and forest areas’.

The Newry native succeeded Chris O’Neill in the role recently and is all set for her new role which began last month. “My name is Niamh Fallon, I am the new President of the Students Union, at Dundalk Institute of Technology, for the upcoming Academic Year. make connections with, and be active within the local community in Dundalk and further afield. Being driven by activism and making positive changes, I intend this to be a key priority in my role this year. It is my main priority to ensure the stu-

Annaverna set to host annual All-Ireland Poc Fada competition

The annual All-Ireland Poc Fada Competition takes place on Monday 1st August next on Annaverna in the Cooley Mountains. This year promises to be even better with the best of the four provinces greatest hurlers and camogie players competing for the title of All Ireland Champion. Who will follow in the footThe MD Sports All Ireland Poc Fada takes place this Bank Holiday Monday in the Cooley Moun- steps of Cú Chulainn and poc all tains. The Senior Men and Women as well as the U16 boys and girls will be in action. before them? The modern Poc Fada recreates the legendary journey of Cú Chulainn who as the 7-yearold boy Setanta decided he had waited long enough to become a member of the famous Red Branch Knights of Ulster. So he set off from his home in Dundalk for the Macra, the Red Branch Knights school in Ard Mhacha (Armagh), some 60km away. While crossing The Cooley Mountains Setanta hit his sliotar far ahead and ran forward to catch it on his hurley stick before it hit the ground. While today’s competitors cannot fully recreate Setanta’s

mythical feats, they do compete over the same Cooley mountains as Setanta once passed. The 5km Senior Hurling and 2.5 km Senior Camogie and Under 16 courses do provide ample opportunity to practice pocs, as on average the Senior Hurling takes 50 pocs to win. The modern All-Ireland Poc Fada dates back to 1960 when six boys from Dundalk (Mal Begley, Peter Crilly, Sean Mc Aeney, Jerome Mc Donagh, Peter Myles and first ever winner Damien Callan) under the watchful eye of An tAthair Pól Mac Shean, took part in the very first Poc Fada. The first AllIreland Poc Fada took place the following year in 1961. First sponsored by Martin Donnelly over 25 years ago, the MD Sports myclubshop.ie AllIreland Poc Fada Finals represent one of the longest-running sponsorships within the GAA & Camogie Association. Everyone is very welcome to Annaverna on Bank Holiday Monday, so why not make your way to the mountain for 10am

Cllr Reilly looking for road upgrade Councillor John Reilly has tabled a motion at the Dundalk Municiple Meeting calling on Louth County Council to upgrade the Tankardsrock road in Kilkerley. Cllr. Reilly explained at the meeting that the road was currently not fit for purpose. It has a high volume of traffic in and out of the village on the Tankardrock road with the school, church, community centre and local businesses. There are several points on the road where 2 vehicles are unable to meet. The road is not suitable in its current form for heavy goods vehicles. Cllr. Reilly has stated that he has had dialogue with the landowners and they are all very willing to cooperate with Louth County Council in improving the road. The Fine Gael councillor claims that the local community are willing to put their shoulder to the wheel and will use their own equipment to remove the hedges where necessary. Cllr. Reilly says it is a golden opportunity to sort this long running issue once and for all.

The company first established its EMEA headquarters in Dublin in 2016.” Kaseya saw the potential in Ireland and decided to expand its operations with this second site in Dundalk to operate as a Centre of Excellence with a focus on research and development. CEO of IDA Ireland Martin Shanahan said: “Thanks to Kaseya’s positive experience with establishing a facility in Dublin, the company has selected Dundalk as the location of its second Irish site. This is very good news for the entire region and the skilled and talented workforce located there. I wish Kaseya every success with this expansion.” Kaseya successfully executed a similar program in the U.S., in Miami, Florida where the company is headquartered. In two short years, Kaseya has grown its Miami operation from 150 people to more than 600 and now occupies over 150,000-sq-ft to support its growth plan of having over 1,200 “Kaseyans” in Miami by 2023. Kaseya will work closely with university partners in the area to help train students for the positions and foster the next generation of technology professionals in the region. “We saw tremendous opportunity to expand the tech ecosystem in Ireland – we’re already in Dublin – and decided to open a second office in Dundalk,” said Kaseya CEO Fred Voccola. Fatima to celebrate 70th anniversary this weekend

Dundalk Leader 27th July 2022

The close-knit community of Fatima are celebrating the 70th anniversary of their estate this weekend with a jampacked table of events taking place between Friday and Monday. The organising committee have been working tirelessly to ensure there is something for everybody this weekend including sport, music and a sold out reunion evening which will take place in Clan na Gael GFC Function Room. There will also be a special memorial mass on Friday evening for past residents of Fatima as well as a presentation on Monday morning to the sixteen residents who moved in to Fatima when the estate was created in 1952. According to committee members Noel Keough and Kevin (Jock) McArdle, everybody in Fatima are looking forward to celebrating the special anniversary of a special estate in Dundalk. “Fatima is a wonderful place and the sense

We formed a committee when we first mooted the idea a couple of years ago but then Covid hit and that put our plans up in the air. However, from last November we

went hell for leather and after a lot of hard work we have a final timetable of events which we are very pleased with and we hope will bring a lot of joy and entertainment to celebrate our wonderful community,” he added. “Fatima was a fantastic place to grow up,” notes Jock, “ as it was in town but far enough outside of town that it was almost like growing up in the country. There was so much green spaces and fields for young lads to roam wild and walk

for hours without our parents having to worry about us. Back in the early 60’s I can remember maybe one or two houses at most having a television and the doors would always be open and it wouldn’t be unusual for up to twenty kids going into the house with the television to watch something on it. We both have great memories of our childhood in Fatima and we are both very proud to be from the area,” stated Jock. The Fatima celebra-

tions kick off at 6:30pm on Friday with a memorial mass in Fatima Church while Carlingford Pipe Band will lead a group of children wearing their club colours following the mass for a march to the Green in Fatima Court. On Saturday and Sunday there will be a whole host of activities for young and old including sports day, music and entertainment. The sold out reunion night in Clan Na Gael’s function room is an all ticket affair and if anybody without a ticket can’t go they are asked to return their ticket to a member of the committee. The weekend ends on a high note with a finale featuring GIG on the RIG with local bands and singers. A special commemorative book celebrating the history of Fatima as well as specially designed Fatima Freedom Fighter T-shirts are available for just €10 from committee members.

Senator welcomes new initiative designed to help people in violent relationships A new initiative has been developed to help victims suffering from domestic abuse. Safe Ireland has collaborated with the Irish Pharmacy Union to roll-out the Safe Pharmacy initiative, which is a community response to support women who are suffering from domestic violence. Participating pharmacies will provide a safe confidential space where a victim can contact a local support service or can reach out to An Garda Síochána for emergency support. To date a total of 36 Pharmacies all across County Louth have signed up to this initiative. Louth Fianna Fail Senator Erin McGreehan commented on this initiative stating, ‘This is a fantastic idea, and I am in no doubt it will assist many people. It is so difficult for victims to gain the confi-

Fianna Fail Senator Erin McGreehan. dence to seek help. It is never simple or easy. So to have another safe place to go means so much. The idea that someone in danger can go to their local pharmacy, a place that is used so regularly is amazing’. Nationwide over 800 pharmacies have decided to take part

in this initiative and participating pharmacies will provide access to a phone in a private consultation room and contact details for local support services. This will allow victims to make that important call, for example, to a family member, local specialist domestic violence services or An Garda Síochána. Senator McGreehan continued ‘I congratulate the pharmacies in Louth who have so far agreed to partake in this initiative. Pharmacists are often the frontline for many issues and they are highly respected and trusted in our community. I just want to remind people that if you need help, remember the Safe Pharmacy and also Women’s Aid Dundalk is an incredible organisation who are always there offering assistance to so many”.

Tributes following the death of Louth All-Ireland winner Kevin Behan

There was sadness in Louth GAA circles this week following the death of the great Kevin Beahan who helped Louth win an All Ireland Senior Football Championship in 1957. The former St Mary’s Ardee midfielder still remains to this day Louth’s alltime top championship scorer. As well as winning the All Ireland with Louth in 1957 Kevin was also immensely proud of the five senior championship medals he won with St Mary’s. Although he lived most of his life in Dublin, Kevin’s heart was always in Ardee and he was a regular visitor to Páirc Mhuire over the years to cheer on the Marys. The Ardee club posted a condolence message for one of their best ever players following his passing on Sunday. “It is with great sadness we at Ardee St. Mary’s learn of the passing of

with his beloved St Mary’s, regularly attending matches, indeed as late as last year and at the age of 88 he could be seen attending St Marys matches

at Páirc Mhuire. Kevin also co-managed the Mary’s in conjunction with Aidan Magennis from 1990 to 1992 the highlight of their tenure being a brilliant victory over Stabannon in the Cardinal O Donnell cup final in 1991. “We at St Mary’s have always known how much Kevin loved his club his town and his county and he has been so inspirational to us all and he will always be so fondly remembered by everybody involved in GAA in Ardee and Louth. We at St. Mary’s sent our condolences to his Family and Friends. May He Rest in Peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam,”. Sensational Scott warms up for worlds with record breaking lifts Scott Holland continues to be the talk of the Irish powerlifting scene after another unbelievable performance last weekend in Enfield Co. Meath. The twelve-year-old set new national records in three different disciplines as he warmed up for the World Championships which take place in Manchester this September. Scott, from Cuchulainn’s Terrace just off the Castletown Road, squatted 92.5kg, benched 55kg and deadlifted 115kg to give him a total of 262.5kgs which was good enough to see him finish 46th in the novice competition which was open to all ages. Scott will travel to Manchester in Sep-

before the worlds and he performed brilliantly setting new national records at U16 level. It’s hard to believe he is doing what he is doing at just 12 years old and he is making a bit of a name for himself in the powerlifting world giving how fast he is progressing and how well

he is competing with guys much older than him. “The two boys will ramp up the training now at home in preparation for the worlds in September and they are both really looking forward to getting over there and competing,” added Kevin.

Redemptorist Church Bells will ring again this autumn Dundalk Leader 27th July 2022

Tree Surgeons Fully Insured Hedge Cutting & Garden Clearance Stump Grinding & Mulching

The sound of the Redemptorist church bells have been absent for the past year after an inspection in 2021 found extensive corrosion around the steel frame holding the bells which kickstarted a project to get them restored to their former glory. That project saw a group of

experts from the UK arrive in Dundalk last week to begin the arduous task of taking down all ten bells all of which have their own personal name. As well as restoring the ten bells that were taking down last week there will also be two brand new bells added to bring the total bells back to twelve. When the

bells were first installed there were originally twelve of them but two were irreparably damaged after a fire in the church at the end of the 19th century. The two new bells will be named Oliver and Moninne. The giant bells including the names Patrick, Gerard and Brigid have now returned to

Loughborough in Leicestershire to the John Taylor Company where they were originally cast. The restoration of the bells and frame should be completed by September and the plan is to rededicate them at the St. Gerard Majella Novena in October.

We also sell & deliver Wood Chip & Fire Logs in ton bags - deliveries arranged

To mark the centenary of the famous Dundalk Jail breakout, local Sinn Féin Halpenny Worthington Watters Sinn Féin Cumann will hold a vigil on the Ardee Road side of the Jail at 6.45pm on Wednesday 27th July (this evening). Councillor Kevin Meenan

will be speaking at the short event and said “this is the decade of centenaries and Dundalk seen its fair share of action during that turbulent time. Wednesday marks 100 years to the day when the town was rocked by a loud explosion at 7.15am and 105

prisoners escaped through a hole in the wall, led by Frank Aiken. Many were re-captured within a short period. “Over half of the escapees were from the 4th Northern Division while most of the remainder were from Meath and the Midlands so I invite

people along to mark the event especially any descendants of those who were incarcerated at the time.” The vigil will last about 30 minutes on Wednesday 27th July at 6.45pm on the Ardee Road side of the old Jail, the site of the blast.

As we approach the August Bank Holiday weekend, in a year which has seen a marked increase in the numbers of people who have lost their lives on our roads, Louth County Council’s Road Safety Officer is encouraging everyone to do their part to stay safe. It is estimated that driver fatigue is a contributory factor in as many as one in five driver deaths in Ireland and tirednessrelated collisions are three times more likely to be fatal or result in a serious injury because of the high impact speed and lack of avoiding action. Speaking on the run up to the Holiday Weekend, Adrian O’Sullivan Road Safety Officer has the following advice to all road users. “There will be increased amounts of traffic on the roads as we head off on a welldeserved break and for many there will be long journeys ahead. Driver fatigue can creep up on you slowly and it is impossible to fight it and the risks can be tragic. Recognise the signs that you are becoming tired behind the wheel take appropriate action and protect not just yourself but your passengers and other road-users. You should never fight sleep at

the wheel.” added Adrian. Research carried out by the Road Safety Authority has found that 28% of motorists in Ireland say they have fallen asleep or nodded off, even if only for a moment when driving. Among people who drive for work, this figure increases to 33%. Those most at risk from driver fatigue are: 1. Young men 2. People working night shifts 3. Those who drive for a living 4. People with sleep disorders, such as sleep apnoea. The Road Safety Officer has also appealed to passengers to do their bit. “Tiredness related collisions can have catastrophic consequences as drivers are less likely to take avoiding actions, so if you’re in a car being driven by a tired driver, speak up. Ask them to pull over safely and follow the ‘Stop Sip Sleep’ advice”. I would urge all those travelling this weekend to plan their journeys and don’t try to fight sleep at the wheel. Turning the radio up or opening the window will not prevent fatigue. The only cure for tiredness is sleep. Many sleep-related crashes are due to lifestyle issues such as driving without adequate sleep, whilst

others are due to various medical conditions such as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome, neurological conditions or the use of certain prescription and nonprescription (over the counter) medicines.” “Anyone taking medications that are in doubt should check with their doctor or pharmacist who will advise about treatment and any restrictions to their licence, to ensure they keep themselves and other safe while driving” added the Road Safety Officer. A total of 89 people have lost their lives on Irish roads as at 22nd July 2022. This represents an increase of twenty six when compared to the same period last year. Five of these fatalities occurred in County Louth. Of the thirteen people killed on Co Louth roads in 2021 and 2022 to date, all were male. The Road Safety Authority and Applegreen have teamed up to provide free cups of coffee to drivers at participating Service Stations. To avail of your free coffee simply say ‘RSA’ or ’Driver Reviver’ to the till operator. The offer is available between 2pm and 8pm on Friday 29th July and Monday 1st August 2022.
