Creches close over pay dispute
By Tamara O’Connell
A NUMBER of local childcare providers attended a protest outside the gates of Leinster House yesterday for the first of three consecutive days of action against a number of issues facing the sector
Up to 4000 people attended the protest yesterday asking the government to engage in meaningful dialogue. The government have claimed that they are spending €1 billion a year on childcare but that figure is refuted by childcare providers who claim only half of that figure is making it’s way into the sector.
The manager of the Holy Fam-
ily Community Creche and Claddagh Treasures Pre-school, while supporting the protest, has decided to keep the Dundalk childcare providers open during a strike by other providers this week.
Irene McCaffrey told The Dundalk Leader that “on this occasion we decided not to join the planned threeday strike by childcare providers”.
“We are a community not-for-profit organisation. We do recognise that changes are needed for childcare staff, and that they are not being treated properly by the Government in relation to professionalism and increases in pay.

“We decided to stay open out of loyalty to our families. A lot of our families are single parent families and some of the parents are in education.”
Irene added: “Some of our families would be in dire straits if we decided to close our doors. We are in full agreement with the cause. We are sympathetic and those who have decided to close we give them our full support.
“Some childcare staff are highly educated. We have someone who is educated up to level nine here and pay is not reflecting the level of education achieved by staff.
“This isn’t good enough. The Government needs to do more to recognise the education and the level of pay should match it.”
A large number of
childcare providers are expected to close their services this week from Tuesday to Thursday to protest over pay issues.
The Federation of Early Childhood Providers, a representative body for the industry, has said that providers have been getting the same fees since 2017.
“The Federation of Early Childhood Providers acknowledges the introduction of the Core Funding scheme. However, we reject and refute the claim that “1 billion a year is being spent on childcare”. When in fact, only 55% (564 million) of this “alleged” 1 billion goes towards sector support.
“Compared with an expected Government budget surplus of 65 billion between now and 2026 this removes any excuse for properly meeting Minister O’Gorman’s target of 1

The series features Bean and Fear an Tí, Síomha ní Ruairc and James kavanagh who have opened the doors of their love Teach.
The show comprises ten singletons learning Irish and trying to find love. It also features Grainne Seoige as the ‘Cinnire Grá’ - the ‘Captain of love’.
Contestants split their time between flirting and foclóir with the aim of being crowned ‘Couple with the most focail’ to walk away with €10,000.
“When I first walked into the house, it took me aback. It felt a bit
billion a year spending on the sector. Furthermore, despite inflation rising by 16.9 percent in the 3 year period from May 2020 to May 2023, funding has risen just 6%.
“We are calling on the Government…
1. To increase the rate of Core Funding. ;2. To restore the title of educator to our professional workforce.; 3. To End
The Fee Freeze Immediately.; 4. To Facilitate the Streamlining and Reduction of Excessive Administration.; 5. To Index link all funding for future budgets.
“Early Years Services are the backbone of every community across the country. It is of utmost importance that their viability is ensured and that they stay open to meet the needs of their community. The indigenous Irish childcare system, which was
formed around the needs of their community isn’t broken…The government funding is.
Minister for Children
Roderic O’Gorman stated that there had been significant investment in the sector over the past three years and that he would be looking to continue that investment in the forthcoming budget. The Minister said he wanted to continue to support childcare providers, but he also wanted to cut fees for parents.
“We are way behind and that’s why I’ve made it a key goal of my time as minister to address that. That’s why we’ve secured an extra €400 million over the last three years for investment in childcare.
“It’s why when I told childcare providers I’d provide them with that extra money in core funding. One of the conditions was that they had
to pay staff better. That’s how we got designated wage rates for childcare workers. There’s a long way to go. We’re com-
ing back from decades of underinvestment. But we’ve made real progress,” stated the Minister.

“It took me by surprise but it’s not just a dating show, it’s a competition as it involves learning Irish.
“I’m competitive so I got into the spirit of the show. You are teamed up with a partner and over time you get to know them and become closer to your partner.”
He added: “It was an awesome experience. I remember coming out of the house feeling like I really enjoyed it.
“It was a laugh. Obviously, it’s a dating show but it’s also uniquely Irish. The contestants are normal Irish people in the Gaeltacht. It’s very relatable.
“There is a good mixture of cringe but it’s good craic too. I watched it for the first time with my family and everyone was screaming they were so excited”.

Make Way Day takes place in Dundalk
MAkE Way Day was launched in Dundalk for the seventh year running in a bid to raise awareness about the difficulties facing wheelchair users when trying to get around town.
Garda Paul McAvinney, Garda Darragh Prior, Cllr. Maeve Yore, and local wheelchair user and disability rights campaigner John Morgan, met outside the town hall on Crowe Street on Friday, September 22nd to highlight the day.
John, from Siul na Mara on the Point Road was joined by his welltrained assistance dog, Jamie. John suffered an injury in 2012 and has been in a wheelchair ever since. He explained the importance of Make Way Day and was delighted to report that things have been improving since the very first Make Way Day in 2017.
“The purpose of today is to make people aware of the difficulties facing wheelchair users and the visually impaired while walking around Dundalk. And it’s not just wheelchair users that face problems either. People walking with buggies or prams
also encounter difficulties getting around due to careless and illegal parking and we just want to tell people to be aware when they are parking and to make sure they are not potentially blocking anybody,” explained John.
“Thankfully things are getting better every year and the message is starting to sink in. Make Way Day is an initiative from the Disability Federation of Ireland and louth was the first place outside of Dublin to get on board with the idea.
“We see people parking in disabled bays all the time who don’t have a permit and they come out with the excuse that
they are only parking there for a minute but that’s not good enough.
“People with disabilities have enough adversity to overcome without having to deal with people taking one of the limited amount of disabled parking spots around the town or parking carelessly which causes blockages to wheelchair users.
“I’m here today with Cllr. Maeve Yore who has been a great advocate for the disabled in the council. This is our seventh year raising awareness for this issue and thankfully we are making progress,” concluded John.
Cllr. Yore said: “Make Way Day is about edu-
cating people and raising awareness about the difficulties that people with disabilities face.
“We got great support from Chief Superintendent Mangan when he was in office and we have the fabulous Community Garda Darragh prior who has always been very helpful and is here today with us alongside his colleague Garda Paul McAvinney.
“Today is all about educating and informing people about the challenges faced by people with disabilities. It’s tough enough being in a wheelchair without facing obstacles on the footpath too.”, stated Cllr Yore.
Commissioner’s new garda model will be detrimental to louth
InDEPEnDEnT TD Peter Fitzpatrick has questioned the logic of Commisioner Drew Harris’s plan to impose roster changes in the garda siochana which will result in the depletion of existing units such as the community policing units, task force units, drug units and district detective units. Speaking in the Dáil, eputy Fitzpatrick insisted that these new measures will ensure that these new measures will result in less gardaí on the street thus making them less proactive in stamping out crime.
“The Garda is in the grip of a staff retention crisis due to poor pay, poor pensions and poor working conditions. To make matters worse, the Minister for Justice and Commissioner Harris intend to impose roster changes that will result in the depletion of existing units such as the community policing units, task force units, drug units and district detective units in an attempt to fill a new unit come november and which will also force gardaí to work more days and more hours for no additional pay,” explained Fitzpatrick.
“The reality is that no manpower is available. This is a completely retrograde step. Community policing is the cornerstone of Irish
policing, and with the changes the Commissioner is bringing into force, there is little proactive policing being carried out. The proposed new operation will be to the detriment of louth, which has the highest number of incidents and call-outs, as Drogheda and Dundalk are the State’s largest towns.
“There is a growing concern about the impact that the new Garda operation model will have on crime levels, especially when one considers that the gardaí are already swamped by the day-today workload. These new processes will ensure that Garda members spend less time on the beat and being proactive in preventing crime. Where is the benefit? What is going to happen if the ever-depleting
backbone of the Garda dwindles even more? I ask the Minister of State, Deputy Browne, to please ask the Taoiseach to intervene,” he urged.
Responding to Deputy Fitzpatrick the current Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Deputy James Browne promised that further funding and extra recruitment would ensure that a solution will be found to ease any fears gardaí may have.
“I assure the Deputy that record funding is now being provided to An Garda Síochána. There is significant recruitment happening at the moment in Templemore, where more gardaí are going into training. On the rosters, the Garda roster that is currently in operation was introduced by the Garda Commissioner to deal with the specific policing requirements of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The Westmanstown roster is the only roster that is actually agreed between An Garda Síochána and the representative unions.
I know that the Minister, Deputy McEntee, and the Commissioner have met some of those representatives and I am hopeful that a solution to the current situation can be found,” stated Deputy Browne.

Father Ronan Cusack finds inner peace and joy
By Tamara O’Connell
Father ronan Cusack is an 88-year-old priest based in the Friary Church Dun-
dalk who has found “inner peace and joy”. he is a Dublin-born priest who grew up in the village of tallaght, when only 200 people
lived there and it was surrounded by green fields.
“I went to school in terenure College and my father worked in
the post office in Dublin. My mother was a teacher but left that role to become the post mistress in tallaght,” said Fr ronan.
“My parents were also lay Dominicans and were deeply religious people. I had one older brother called Diarmuid.
“We were both altar boys for the Dominicans. My parents were friends with a lot
of Dominican priests and they were often in the house for a cup of tea.”
Fr ronan added: “the atmosphere in the home was on of faith. there was a very strong faith in the home.
“I first started thinking about becoming a priest during my last couple of years at school. My parents didn’t push me to be a
priest. “In terenure College a lot of lads in school joined the Carmelites. We won the Leinster rugby cup in 1952 and two of the team became priests.”
he continued: “I joined the Dominicans in 1953 when I was 18-years-old after I finished my Leaving Certificate.
“I travelled by train to Cork to join the Do-
minicans then the following June my father died of a heart attack at the age of 48.
“I spent two years in Cork, then continued my studies in tallaght and finished my studies in rome for a year in 1960.”
Fr ronan concluded: “I spent time in Cork and Sligo and lived in rome for seven years and also lived in the West Indies on the island of trinidad for seven years.
“I liked rome and the West Indies. they were totally different.
at the time there were 60 Irish Dominicans in trinidad running 36 parishes, now there’s one Irish Dominican in trinidad.
“he’s a Dundalk man called thomas Lawson and he’s been there over 40 years. I moved to Dundalk in 2003 for a year, then later I was in Drogheda for six years before returning to Dundalk.
“I like to think I’ve been helpful to others. I find myself with inner peace and joy now. I’m conscious of the Lord’s love for me.”

Louth County Council lead works on new ‘Feede Loop’ cross border walking trail
lOuTH County Council are leading works on a new cross border looped walking trail, with work on the 8.5km route now almost complete.
Work has been ongoing over recent months on the trail known as
‘Feede loop’, which will provide a much needed cross border facility to open up and improve access to already popular walking and cycling routes in Ravensdale, Feede, Carrickarnon, Flurrybridge, and Jonesbor-
ough, County Armagh in northern Ireland. The improvements will see anyone joining the looped trail now able to begin and complete their journey on either side of the border, and easily access the larger trail network
within Coillte forests, The Tain Way and other mountain pathways.
Hikers, bikers and walkers will benefit from the installation of seating benches and water bottle filling points. In addition, the trail will feature bi-lingual
signage, way markers and interpretative information boards.
A disused picnic area cut-off by construction of the n1/A1 and the M1 motorway has also been restored. upgrades have been carried out on a large
section of existing gravel forest trail within Feede loop, ensuring a smoother surface.
Repairs and resurfacing works have vastly improved footpaths and cycle tracks along the route.
The louth County
Council managed project also involved works along the edge of the graveyard at the old church in Jonesborough, Co. Armagh, and the creation of a new gravel footpath, making this historic area much more accessible for visitors.
Chief Executive of louth County Council, Joan Martin, welcomed works on the project

Open letter to TD’s to support young people in budget
Dear Deputies
Fitzpatrick, Munster, Nash, O’Dowd and Ó’Murchú
We are constituents from Louth, who are calling on you to support young people in Budget 2024 by investing €9.4 million in young people and youth work.
It is a hard time for young people. COVID-19 impacted their mental health and social connections, and now, the cost-of-living crisis means many are struggling financially.
Youth work organisations say that deprivation among young people they work with is on the rise, and the need for youth services is growing dramatically as young people and their communities feel the effects of the costof-living crisis.
Youth workers are often a lifeline
for young people, particularly for those who have the least. The wide range of activities provided by youth organisations support young people in their personal and social development, positive mental health, physical wellbeing, job skills and much more. The rising cost of living is also placing a huge strain on youth work organisations themselves.
A recent survey by the National Youth Council of Ireland revealed that nearly 3 in 5 organisations struggle to deliver vital youth work services because of inflation.
The Government must provide the necessary resources for these organisations to meet the growing needs of young people in Louth, and to provide an Ireland where young people can live,
grow, and flourish.
That is why we are supporting the National Youth Council of Ireland in calling on the Government to invest an additional €9.4m in youth work services in Budget 2024, to provide more supports and activities for young people and meet the needs of our growing youth population. The NYCI and its members across the country believe this increase is needed to help ensure the sustainability of the sector, and deal with current challenges facing many services.
We request that you act on this call and use whatever avenues available to you to ensure that we see a Budget 2024 that invests in our young people.
Your constituents (the open letter was signed by 151 people).
nearing completion. ‘Feede loop is at the heart of north louth’s many scenic walking and hiking routes, which attract so many visitors to our beautiful county, and are hugely popular with local people too. It is wonderful to see work on this trail greatly improve access to forests and mountain pathways within the cross border area.’

Zoë named as associate artist with rtÉ concert orchestra
lOCAl musician Zoë Conway has been given the prestigious role of Associate Artist with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. The talented fiddle player who lives in Cooley with husband John McIntyre (a very talented guitarist who regularly plays with Zoë) was given the new role by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra who described her as captivating and a genius.
As Associate Artist, her contribution will enrich traditional and folk elements in the orchestra’s repertoire. She joins an artistic team that includes jazz supremo Guy Barker, also an Associate Artist, with each of these remarkable musicians bringing their expertise to important strands in the RTÉ CO’s eclectic musical programme.
Zoë Conway said: ‘I feel privileged to bring my music to this wonderful orchestra as playing with them is one of my favourite things to do! I just love that place where Irish traditional and orchestral worlds come together, and I feel this collaboration is an exciting development for my music and voice as a composer and performer, and an important development of our living, breathing tradition.’
RTÉ Concert Orchestra General Manager Joe Csibi commented: ‘Zoë’s personality has always shone through in her creative being. She writes so beautifully and creatively that it is hard to do anything but be captivated. As a performer, she is a virtuoso. As a composer, a genius. Our orchestra is lucky to work with Zoë and to create new and fabulous musical adventures for our audience.’
Marking this milestone, an RTÉ CO concert on 15 november at the national Concert Hall will showcase Zoë as both a performer and a composer. The first half features the world premiere of the film From a Forest to a Fiddle accompanied by live performance of Zoë’s score, while the tempo is stepped up in the second half with a feast of traditional music old and new, including her Desert Storm/Rounding Malin Head and Bill Whelan’s Riverdance.

It’s a free event and everyone aged 55 and over in County louth and surrounding areas are welcome to attend. Free parking and accessible facilities will be available on site.
Gavin Duffy louth Age Friendly Ambassador from RTE’s Dragons Den will open the event.

dividuals are all welcome to attend.

Joe Grogan Chairperson of the louth Older People’s Council stated: “The Age Friendly Program in louth continues to go from strength to strength. We have a new and very active Older People’s Council (OPC) in place since March 2023 who meet on a regular basis and discuss, address, and follow up on issues of interest and concern to older people across the county.”
Age Friendly Program Manager Sinead McVerry said: “The issue of safety and keeping safe at home was identified by older people during our Age Friendly workshops in 2022 and 2023, as an issue of great importance to older people.”

how she then dealt with the experience of huge setback also. louth Volunteer Centre will explain how volunteering works across the county, the roles that are on offer and how it benefits the community of county louth. They will show how easy it is sign up and how varied the opportunities are to get involved. They will also be recruiting for the active corps of Community Volunteers who can provide one off help at festivals and community
events.
kayleigh Mulligan, Manager of louth Volunteer Centre says that “Volunteering is proving to be hugely beneficial to young people who do it on a one-off basis now and again at events or who commit a few hours a week on a regular basis to a community organisation. It helps them to understand the concepts of active citizenship and social responsibility.

St louis students put on The Greatest Show
St Louis students played to a packed house at An Táin Arts Centre as they put on The Greatest Show.
a Great Performance of the Greatest Show St Louis Secondary School Dundalk was very well represented in an tain arts Centre recently when both past and current students took to the stage over two nights for a performance of the Greatest Show. the cast deservedly played to packed houses. the girls have been working very hard over the past few months but it was all worth it.
They finally got the opportunity to demonstrate their talents with what was to be originally performed in St Louis Secondary School in March 2020 as their ty Show, when three days before curtain up lockdown struck. What really added to the magic was that their teachers
(Ms elaine Byrne, Ms Kate o’Byrne and Ms Siobhan higgins) who had worked with the girls on the original
production in school were part of the audience and captured a lovely moment at the end with past and current St Louis students in a lovely photo opportunity.
all did themselves and their school very proud over the two nights and the worthy cause of north Louth Hospice was to benefit from all proceeds.
Well done St. Louis Secondary School Dundalk.
