A Blackrock family of a teenage girl say they are ‘thrilled’ that the HSE has finally sorted out a system for allowing them to purchase ‘life-changing’ medicinal cannabis under a ministerial licence.

The issue of Abigail McQuillan (16) from Blackrock, had been raised in the Dáil earlier this year by Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú, who also contacted Health Minister Stephen Donnelly about it.

Abigail’s family had been paying €600 per month for the treatment through a chemist in Newry, but the family was facing a bill of €4,000 up front for three months’ supply from The Hague, after issues after Brexit meant the Northern prescription was no longer valid.

However, last week her mother, Deborah Downey, was contacted by the HSE to say that a new scheme is in place that means she will no longer have to find the cash to pay for the treatment from The Hague.

Man rescued at sea A man who spent ten hours in the water close to Whitestown Beach was rescued on Monday evening after his inflatable dinghy capsized. He was transferred to Beaumont hospital in Dublin and is recovering well.

The man, who is in his late 40s, had gone out on the water at Whitestown Beach, near Cooley and got in trouble when his dinghy capsized. The alarm was raised by a person who noticed his belongings on the shore and the RNLI were alerted at around 9:45pm.

Several groups were involved in the rescue, including the marine rescue coordination centre in Dublin, Kilkeel lifeboat, rescue helicopter 116 and a local pilot boat - the Mourne Mist.

Deputy Ó Murchú said he was pleased to see a resolution to the situation, which has been ongoing for more than eight months.

He said: ‘Abigail’s mother, Deborah Downey, contacted my constituency office in December and since then, we have been working to try to get a resolution to this for the family.

‘I raised it directly with Ministers Varadkar and Donnelly in March, and had numerous contacts with the

health minister’s department, subsequently.

But progress was very slow. The system was much too complicated for people to navigate.

‘Abigail has been in receipt of the ministerialapproved medicinal cannabis for almost a year for Lennox Gastaut Syndrome.

The burden of having to pay for this life enhancing treatment for her was weighing heavily on her family.

‘Under the new scheme, the medicinal cannabis for Abigail will be supplied to her without the cumbersome system of the family paying first and the reimbursement taking months to come through.

This is really good news for Abigail’s family, who tell me that she has now gone more than 70 days without a seizure and, for the first time in a long while, they are looking forward.

‘I want to pay tribute to Deborah for her tenacity in bringing this to a successful conclusion’.

Abigail’s mother Deborah was understandably ecstatic when she received the letter last week which confirmed the family would no longer have to pay for the treatment.

“We were overjoyed and to be honest a bit shocked that this issue had been resolved as quickly as this. To be honest I thought this was

going to drag on for months if not years. We were paying €4000 for three months supply and it was so stressful trying to get the money together. Abigail has been doing phenomonally well on the cannabis oil and she is seizure free for seventy days now which is almost miraculous.

“She is doing so well and although she is sixteen we feel as though we are only getting to meet her now. Her motor skills, walking, ability to converse and everything like that have improved so much and we are getting to see her personality. It’s like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders. Every single day I woke up and the first thing I thought was ‘Who

do I have to ring in the HSE today?’ or ‘How am I going to get money together for Abigail’s next round of treatment?’.

“I want to sincerley thank Ruairí O’Murchú and Anne Campbell from Sinn Fein who have gone above and beyond the call of duty for our family. It is obvious they have kids as they have been so kind and thoughtful and checked up on me on a weekly basis as well as putting pressure on the government and the HSE. Our family want to thank them from the bottom of our hearts for all they have done for us. We feel as though this is a new beginning for us and we are all so happy,” stated Deborah.

Hallidays Mills will welcome first tenants next month The new Halliday Mills apartment complex on Quay Street will welcome the first of its new tenants at the end of next month as a new chapter begins for the former Ard Dealgan building.

The six-storey building has a very spacious rooftop garden which give wonderful views of all over town and inside there are plenty of windows and large atriums which allow plenty of natural light into the complex. There is also an underground car park with 115 car park spaces available as well as room to park up to 60 bikes securely. There will also be a garden and mini playground on land beside the complex.

The original building was built by Tom McFeely’s Coalport Building Co. but has been lying vacant since it was the subject of a Fire Close Notice in 2009. The building was declared not fit for purpose and deemed too dangerous to live in and for many years since it closed it has been a magnet for anti-social behaviour which has caused no end of difficulties for residents in Quay Street.

The construction work for the new development was carried out by the McGrath Group and was funded by the Housing Finance Agency and the Department of Housing to the tune of €21m. Allocation for the new apartments was through Louth County Council’s Choice Based

The apartments have been delivered and will be managed by housing body Co-operative Housing Ireland and according to Padraic Clancy, Head of New Business, for CHI the amount of renovation work which had to be taken out meant that it was practically a new build.

“These apartments are practically new homes. This development was only built in the early 2000’s but as has been well documented they were not up to the required standard and when work started on the redevelopment eighteen months ago we had to completely gut the building. All that was left were the walls and we even worked on them as we needed to put extra insulation into them.

“As I said this is practically a new build

and there is new external and internal insulation, new windows and doors, kitchens and bathrooms, new air to water heat pumps and mechanical ventilation system fitted which will result in lower running costs and lower bills for all tenants. There is a new CCTV and alarm system and we have also upgraded the fire system to ensure the safety of all tenants.

“The first tenants will move in by the end of August and we expect all 85 apartments to be occupied by the end of the year,” stated Padraig. “It was a daunting task from the outset and I have to admit when we saw what the place looked like when we first arrived we were almost scratching our heads wondering how we were going to bring the Halliday Mills plan to fruition. But we stripped it all back and after a lot of hard work we are on the verge of opening and providing some excellent social housing to Louth.

“We offer full scale property maintenance here and one of the great things for our tenants is that they can aspire to being a member of our management board.

The board will consist of twelve members with seven of those elected.

We have really enjoyed working alongside Louth County Council who have been a great help and we also want to thank all of the local residents who were

very patient and helpful towards us during the building process which is due to be completed very shortly,” stated Padraic.

Eoin Carroll, Policy and Communications Manager at CHI made the point that the term social housing is outdated given the fact that most people on housing lists are in full employment.

“I think there is sometimes a stigma associated

to people on the housing list but the majority of people living in social housing are in paid employment. These are top quality houses and the people who will begin moving in next month will be free to decorate their apartments as they wish and put their own stamp on it. We are proud to deliver these houses and we look forward to working with Louth County Council again,” stated Eoin.

Drug dealer intimidation tactics on the rise

Sinn Fein councillor Kevin Meenan has spoken out against intimidation tactics by drug dealers in Dundalk who are targeting family members of people who have run up drug debts. According to Kevin the problem is becoming more prevalent and he has urged anybody who is being intimidated by these people to go to the gardaí and help put a stop to these practices. “ U n f o r t u n a t e l y, these intimidation tactics have become a lot more prevalent in recent years and I have lost count of the amount of people I have called around to who have had their homes damaged or threats on their life because somebody in that family or somebody close to them owes money to a drug dealer. It’s

Cllr Kevin Meenan. hard to listen to their stories and to see how helpless they are. The drug gangs are targeting family members or extended family members to send a message and unfortunately these types of incidents are on the rise.

“The tactics typically used by these drug

gangs are to smash windows or burn down houses and I know of at least four houses that have been burned which is absolutely appalling. On top of trying to help out a family member who is fighting a drug addiction they also have to deal with these threats and

intimidation tactics and the whole situation is causing them so much stress and anxiety,” stated Kevin.

“These incidents are happening all over town and the vast majority of them stem back to one or two individuals who are the main drug dealers in Dundalk. The gardaí know who they are and in fairness to them they are working hard trying to rid the town of these scourges but they need help and I would urge people who are being intimidated to tell the gardaí and help them build a case strong enough to take these people down.

“People have been struggling as it is with the pressures of lockdown and then they have stuff like this to deal with on top of everything. It needs to be stopped.

Maeve issues scooter warning Independent Councillor Maeve Yore is calling on members of the public to stop riding bikes and scooters on footpaths.

Cllr Yore raised the issue at a meeting of the Dundalk Joint Policing Committee last week.

She said she is concerned about the number of people using bikes and scooters on footpaths around town.

“They’re very fast. I’m out walking more maybe because of lockdown and there seems to be a lot on the Avenue Road,” said Cllr Yore.

“It just has to be addressed. The excuse that some people are using is that the roads aren’t fit for purpose.

“But it’s against the rules of the road to cycle on a footpath. I don’t think the

answer is fining people.”

Cllr Yore added: “We need to educate people and get the message across. It just has to be nipped in the bud.

“We’ve got funding for new cycle lanes so they are coming but there are a few people who have contacted me who have disabled parking spaces outside their homes and they are worried about the impact of the cycle lanes so that issue needs to be addressed.

“We just need to make sure people are safe. Parents need to have a chat with their children and children need to have a chat with their parents.

“It’s not fair to say it’s only children and teenagers. We need to raise awareness and not go the enforcement route.”

SIGNS in the Cooley Peninsula were badly damaged in what has been described as a “malicious” act by the Secretary of the Cooley Community Alert Group.

The signs between Cooley Hall and Greenore were vandalised with a blow-torch, according to Secretary of the Cooley Community Alert Group Michael Muckian.

“The signs were targeted on Thursday night last and were discovered burnt and defaced on Friday morning,” he said.

“I don’t think it was children that did it because of the equip-

ment that was involved. It was serious as it burnt aluminium signage.

“Thankfully, it’s all fixed now bar one sign. They were signs for the community alert group and for property marking.”

Michael added: “It’s incredibly frustrating. Sometimes people take offence to the signs. The last thing you want to see is that level of disrespect.

“It was someone with too much time on their hands. The guards here are brilliant. They are really community-minded.

“They are very much appreci-

ated here. The property marking scheme has been a real deterrent to criminals.”

He continued: “At the recent JPC meeting in Louth, the figures showed there had been no increase in theft in the Cooley area most likely due to the scheme.

“We were the first place in Louth to do it. I think just Cooley and Dromiskin rolled it out preCovid-19 but we marked €8 million worth of property.

“If it was stolen and recovered the guards would be able to trace it due to the marking. It’s made a massive difference.”

Maria to table motion to improve signage at Blackrock beach Fine Gael councillor Maria Doyle is planning to table a motion to improve the signage at Blackrock beach at the next Louth County Council meeting.

A family had a near miss recently when they were rescued on Blackrock beach by Conor Hughes of the Crosscause charity after the incoming tide cut them off.

“Sadly, there were quite a few fatalities over the weekend nationwide and we don’t want this to happen in our locality,” said Cllr Doyle.

“So many new families

have moved into Blackrock over the last ten or 20 years and they might not have the local knowledge of the tide.

“They might not understand the signs so it’s important it’s as clear as possible.”

According to a statement from Louth County Council, this location was assessed by the water safety officer and his report determined there is permanent comprehensive signage at Blackrock beach.

“The signage is both graphical and in English,” said the statement.

Former Irish Lion and Irish Rugby Legend, and longtime Barretstown Ambassador, Gordon D’Arcy completed his four day 850km cycle in Dundalk Rugby Club last weekend raising awareness and money for Barretstown while doing so.

D’Arcy who was capped 82 times by his country was welcomed to Mill Road by Dundalk RFC Club President John McKevitt who congratulated him on his fundraising efforts and committed a donation to the charity from the club. He took

time also out of his busy schedule to sign rugby jerseys and rugby balls for the young fans, to play rugby with them in glorious sunshine and to give the upcoming future stars the opportunity to be photographed with him before he joined Club Members for refreshments prior to setting off for the final stage of his challenge.

He took the opportunity to thank the club, to talk about the importance of the club within the local community and to discuss the growth in girls rugby and the important role of

local clubs such as Dundalk RFC in promoting its development.

Barretstown offers free, specially designed camps and programmes for children and their families living with a serious illness – supported behind the scenes by 24 hour on site medical and nursing care.

Dolores welcomes Permanent TSB/Ulster Bank deal Permanent TSB is set to buy the Ulster Bank branch in Ardee as part of a potential deal between the two lenders.

Permanent TSB is expected to purchase 25 Ulster Bank branches in total as part of the deal.

It is also expected that about 400 to 500 Ulster Bank

employees, who are wholly or mainly assigned to the retail and SME loans that are being acquired, will transfer to Permanent TSB. Fine Gael Councillor Dolores Minogue has welcomed the development. She said that it’s “great news” for Ardee.

“I’m delighted to hear Permanent TSB is set to save the Ulster Bank branch in Ardee. The more banks we have and the more people are employed in the area the better,” she said. “Commiserations to those who lost out. It’s a tough blow to them. It’s brilliant for Ardee as it will make

the town more attractive to the IDA. “As a councillor I’m always fighting tooth and nail to convince the IDA that Ardee is an attractive location.”

Cllr Minogue added: “The IDA will look at the fabric of the town and see that it has a lot to offer. At the end of the

day it’s positive news. Jobs will be saved and it is less hassle for banking customers.

Dundalk Youth Centre Peace Arts Project Dundalk Youth Centre has teamed up with over 240 young people to create a huge collaborative artwork project. The impressive art installation will be on display at the Marshes Shopping Centre.

The project teamed up with three local artists to deliver a series of twentyfour creative workshops with local schools. Sixth class students from St. Josephs, Gaelscoil Dhún

Dealgan, C.B.S Primary, Castletown Girls Schools and the Redeemer participated in the monumental project.

The projects aim was to give these young people a voice and a chance to express their feelings about the pandemic. The main themes of; messages of hope, a brighter tomorrow and the best and worst parts of lockdown.

Students were excited to get stuck in and express their voice about the highs

and lows of this past 18 months including missing family, friends, holidays, parties, going to the cinema, sports, shopping and sleepovers. They also explored their favorite memories of lockdown including Christmas dinner with family in July, hiking with family, taking up new hobbies like baking, sea swimming and online quizzes.

to engage with their feelings and frustrations of the pandemic and how covid 19 has impacted their lives.

Letting their voice shine through in the project as well as building new skills and interests.

The students explored these themes through 3 different mediums print, ceramic and sculpture. Ceramicist Etaoin O’Reilly helped students create individual clay tiles exploring their experiences through lockdown. Print-

maker Gráinne Murphy worked with the students to creative collaborative screen-prints using drawings by the pupils. Students also had a chance to decorate shields with patterns and designs tied to the themes.

Artist Ulrike Liebetrau’s contribution ties the whole project together. She created a huge wooden Viking ship, battle shields and waves. The ship being the canvas for the pupils printed artwork and the

waves to showcase the tiles.

The entire project has also been captured on film by videographer Seán McMahon who will compile the footage of students and artists to create a video that will be available online.

The installation is a spectacular piece of art and really encapsulates the pandemic in a creative light. It will be on display in the Marshes from the 31st July- 7th of August. It will also be moving to the

Louth County Museum later in autumn for Culture Night.

AUGUST LOCAL ACTIVITIES Something for everybody to enjoy this August

hether you are a local or just passing through there are no shortage of local activities in Dundalk during August for you and your family to enjoy. From exploring the town’s rich heritage to enjoying the arts there is something for everybody to enjoy throughout August as summer draws to a close.

St Nicholas’s churchyard, known to most as the Green Church, will be open to the public on Saturday 31st July and on Monday 2nd August between 1.30pm and 5.30 pm.

he walls are primed, the artists are ready and Dundalk's SEEK Contemporary Urban Arts Festival 2021 gets under way this weekend.

Martin McElligott, TCCM, explained ‘2021 really is the year that we bring the international art scene to Dundalk town Centre.

The curation of artists is pivotal to the success of the festival each year and as SEEK evolves we look forward to welcoming some of the world’s biggest artists as we continue to tell Dundalk’s unique story through the wonderful medium of art’.

‘The festival kicks off on July 31st and runs until August 7th, with three of our five headlining artists Friz, Omin and Italian born Basik tackling some of our most ambitious murals to

date. The festival will be extended through to October this year as we welcome Australian artist Smug in September, and our fifth artist, Tellas from Sardinia, in October. This adjustment is necessary due to Covid 19 international travel restrictions, but as always ‘The Show Must Go On!’ Martin continued, ‘I would also like to take the time to thank all of our project team members and all our sponsors. As the project has grown, so has the list of amazing sponsors; that is testament to the success of this great festival and I have been privileged to be part of this amazing journey’.

Dundalk Tourism Officer, Sinéad Roche added ‘The artists have been tasked with painting a large scale mural illustrating a character or theme from Dundalk's rich

history and heritage. This year’s festival will highlight Francis Leopold-McClintock better known as The Artic Fox, botanical explorer Dr. Thomas Coulter, the mighty Lugh (Lú) - one of the most prominent gods in Irish mythology, Saint Oliver Plunkett, and an exciting mural celebrating our rich railway and manufacturing heritage and inspired by blueprints of locomotives built by the Great Northern Railway works.

‘Fringe festival events include the exciting new ‘HIDE’ exhibition in Bridge Street Studios, spray painting and cyanotype creative workshops at Market Square for children and teens, as well as a giant Block Puzzle created by AAEX members.

We also have Louth Craftmark outdoor ‘Summer Fair’ at St. Nicholas Plaza,

and of course the hugely popular walking tours.

Sinéad continued ‘SEEK festival and its legacy artworks have created quite a stir nationally and internationally. The spectacular murals appeal to locals as well as tourists to our town, visitors see themselves more as ‘explorers’ than ‘tourists’ – they want to discover the hidden stories and get under the skin of a destination. They want an interactive, local and personalised experience and are motivated by their curiosity and a passion to broaden their minds by exploring new places, and connecting with the local people. SEEK Urban Arts Festival delivers all this and more, and we are excited to see the artist’s interpretation of this year’s themes’.

Lunasa Walks with Venora O'Brien Enjoy a 2.5 hour guided walk during the Lunasa Festival and hear the fascinating history of Ring of Gullion and Cooley on foot with local tour guide Venora O'Brien.

Featured in the Irish times in 2020, Venora is described as leading off -the- beaten -track, Borderland walks, exploring sacred sites, mountain trails and historical villages in the North Louth and South Armagh region.

Sat 31st July-Sun 1st August—Hidden Forkhill-through music, poetry and song.

The festival kicks off with a 2 hour gentle walk through hidden Forkhill , exploring the Plantain, the Old Churchyard and the Peace Park. Leading from the village, the walk continues along lush countryside and river banks, crisscrossing the Border to Urney Graveyard, the final resting place of O’ Doirnin. At his graveside, listen to his Poetry or Seanos singing by reknowned local singers. Upon returning to the Village, enjoy a homecooked meal accompanied by a traditional seisiun performed by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri, long established in the area.

The walk, food and music takes place throughout Forkill and Urney graveyard and afterwards at the Welcome Inn pub.

Saturday 7th August—(with Ann Ward) Feeding your Senses. A 4.5 hour experience of immersing your senses through mindful walking and forest bathing in Ravensdale.

Afterwards, enjoy an artisan lunch at a quirky farmhouse with sensory herb gardens.

Wednesday 11th August—A Stroll up Carrive- its history and secret paths. Circular 2.5 hour walk from Mullaghbane with stunning views of the Ring of Gullion. Hear dark tales of ancient and modern times. Visit the hidden Massrock and ancient village hamlet at Carrive.

Saturday 14th August—Killeavy Camino (with Ann Ward). Follow St Moninne's journey

from Faughart to Killeavy though ancient tracks and trails of the Gap of the North. Hear of her links to St. Brigid and how life was lived in the 6th century. Halfway, enjoy a rest and lunch at Dromintee. Complete your camino at Moninne's well on the slopes of Slieve Gullion.

Return to Faughart by bus.

Wedensday 18th August—Gap of the North trail. A 2 hour linear walk from Faughart Graveyard to Kilnasaggart. Hear of Saints and Smugglers, Battles and Bivouacs. See the grave of Edward the Bruce, the last High King of Ireland and Moyry Castle, built in 10 days.

Friday 20th August—Meadowlands- A journey through time. Walk through a secret mountain valley in the Cooleys, passsing through famine lazy beds and booley sites. See the sweathouses and the prehistoric settlement of Lisnachiggal.

Erin McGreehan welcomes the passing of the Fair Deal Scheme

Louth Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has welcomed the signing of the Nursing Homes Support Scheme (Amendment) Bill, 2021, into law.

The Bill will amend the Nursing Homes Support Scheme, commonly known as Fair Deal, to

enhance protections for family farms and businesses.

This change to the Scheme will mean that after a period of 3 years, the value of familyowned farms and businesses will no longer be taken into account when calculating the cost of a

person’s nursing home care. This will happen where a family successor commits to working the farm or business.

Senator McGreehan commented, “I wish to thank Minister Mary Butler for all her work on the Fair Deal Scheme. She worked on

it in opposition and has worked diligently to get this passed into law in her first year as Minister for Older People.

“It will make significant and positive improvements to the Fair Deal Scheme and is very much welcomed by farming families.”

New group established with aim of re-developing Oriel Park News

This may not end up being a season to remember on the pitch for Dundalk FC but in years to come 2021 may well be looked back on as the year when plans for the redevelopment of Oriel Park were finally kickstarted.

Last Friday a statement from Dundalk FC announced that a new group had been formed to look into redeveloping theground.

“Dundalk FC welcomes the establishment of a Stadium & Facilities Redevelopment group, focused on developing a Category 3 stadium and supporting facility as a Centre of Excellence for sport, entertainment and business in the North-East.

“This initiative has cross-party political support in place to bring the best possible facility to Dundalk, and the group – in tandem with local business people – shall explore all options in the area.

“The group consists of local Fianna Fáil councillor Seán Kelly, Fine Gael Senator John McGahon and Sinn Féin TD Ruairí

Ó Murchú along with Brendan Ogle, Trade Union Official for Unite Ireland and chair of the newly-formed Dundalk FC Supporters’ Club, former public servant Anne Caldwell, long-standing fan and club volunteer, Damien Mackin, Dundalk FC Sporting Director Jim Magilton, Stadium Manager Aaron Lawless and local businessperson Paddy Casey.

“The Stadium & Facilities Redevelopment Group will engage with the local council and its chief executive as well as all relevant national Government and sporting bodies to support the initiative.

“The establishment of this Stadium & Facilities Redevelopment Group is a crucial first step in the development of a stadium befitting this club and town,” said Jim Magilton.

“The support of fans and townspeople will be crucial to driving this project forward. We all want a stadium and supporting

facility that the club, locals and fans – both old and new – can be proud of. We all want a stadium that is accessible for all fans, with facilities that enrich the local community.

“We all want a stadium and facilities that are welcoming for opposition fans, at least off the pitch. We will strive, as a group, to make this happen. I’d like to thank Paddy Casey and Aaron Lawless for their tireless work in pulling together what is a fantastic working group. We can’t wait to get started,” read the statement from Dundalk FC. Speaking to the Dundalk Leader on Monday, Brendan Ogle, chairperson of the 1903 Dundalk Supporters Group said that the group have already held a very positive meeting online and he was pleased that the wheels are finally in motion for the redevelopment of Oriel.

“I think everybody knows that this should have been done years ago and it’s way beyond time that something like this has hap-

pened. Everybody knows it’s in dire need of an upgrade and our team and supporters deserve better. We got contacted by the football club with a view to setting up this group and to be honest I was relieved and delighted as you worry that the people in charge aren’t talking about the elephant in the room which is Oriel Park.

“We have already had our first meeting and I was very pleased that everybody is on the same page and determined to get this done.

The next step is to explore what funding opportunities we have at EU, government and FAI levels. I have heard some people say that we should be aiming for category 4 rather than category 3 and that is probably fair comment. There is a lot of work ahead of us and I know there have been many false dawns but we are determined that within the next couple of years we will have seen significant progress with regards to redeveloping Oriel Park,” stated Brendan.

St Nicholas Avenue pay their respects to the dead

With no Blessings of the Graves again this year due to COVID-19 the ladies committee in St Nicholas Avenue once again made sure that they would pay their respects to the dead by way of a candlelight vigil which was held on the Avenue on Sunday evening.

Last year the resident’s committee responded to news that the Blessing of the Graves had been cancelled by organising a vigil with a candle placed outside every house while people

stood outside and payed their respects to those they knew that have passed away.

Michael McEneaney from the Residents committee said it was a simple idea and something that residents wanted to do to pay their respects to loved ones who had passed.

“The ladies in the committee did a great job organising candles for everybody on the street and we had a lovely and emotional vigil on Sunday evening as we stood outside

our houses and remembered friends, family and loved ones who have passed over the years. We are a close knit community down here and it was just something we wanted to do to pay our respects to some of the great people we have lost down through the years.

I’d like to say well done to the ladies in the committee for organising it and also to Eugene Garvey who took some lovely pictures on the night,” stated Mickey.

Candles were left outside each house in St Nicholas Avenue for vigil.

€105 million funding to re-open on-site third level learning will benefit students—McGahon A funding package of €105 million to aid the reopening of on-site learning for third level institutions will ensure that students across County Louth can get back to lecture halls come September, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Senator John McGahon said, “The past year has been exceptionally difficult for college students, in particular those who started last September and after a full year of remote learning, still haven’t set foot in a lecture hall or library.

“The funding secured

by Minister Harris reiterates the Government’s commitment to ensuring a return to on-site campus learning in the new academic year. While remote learning has bridged the gap during the pandemic, it is not a long-term replacement for classroom learning and we need to see students return back to third-level campuses across County Louth.

“Included in the €105 million package is funding of €21 million specifically ring-fenced for additional student supports. This covers an extra €3 million for student mental health services, an extra €10 million for the Student Assistance Fund which provides financial supports to students experiencing financial difficulties while in college,

as well as €8 million for the Mitigating Educational Disadvantage Fund which supports and engages disadvantaged learners.

“Third level education is essential, and we need to see that reflected in the return to in-person learning at the start of the new academic year. This is something that Minister Harris has prioritised for months,

and I know that he is continuing to work with County Louth colleges and institutions who are currently engaging in detailed planning for their own buildings and campuses.

“Attending college is not only a defining experience for young people from an educational point of view, but also from a social perspective. While remote learning ensured that students continued to receive their education, so many people missed out on making friends, getting involved in clubs and societies and living away from home.

This is what we need to see resume again.

“I look forward to seeing students across County Louth return to their lecture halls and libraries, meet up with their friends and get back to enjoying the normal college experience again as soon as possible,” concluded Senator McGahon.

Bridge Street Studios announce Summer driving checklist upcoming “HIDE” Exhibition

Bridge Street Studios - Orla Barry, Orlaith Cullinan, Fiona Quigley, Cáoilfíonn Murphy O’Hanlon, Sarah McKenna, Rachel Tinniswood, Mary Cowan Bridge Street Studios is delighted to announce “HIDE”, an exciting new exhibition of authentic Irish art and craft; spanning ceramics, drawing, mixed media, painting and textiles.

Taking place from Saturday 31st July to Saturday 7th August 2021, the exhibition is set to be a highlight of the Fringe Programme of the SEEK Contemporary Urban Arts Festival. SEEK is a vibrant outdoor mural festival attracting some of the world’s best muralists and urban artists to Dundalk.

Located in a 250-year-old grain store, Bridge Street Studios is a thriving hub of art, design and craft in Dundalk, Co. Louth. It is one of the oldest and largest independent artistic collectives in Ireland. The Studios have been firmly cemented in the creative fabric of Dundalk since its formation in 1996.

Bridge Street Studios comprise of seven dynamic professional artists and craftspeople, who create beautiful contemporary pieces

designed and hand-made in Ireland. The artists have taken their inspiration from the themes being explored by the outdoor muralists during the Seek Contemporary Urban Arts Festival; each theme linking to Dundalk’s unique history and heritage. The exhibition has also been programmed as part of DCCI August Craft Month, which will be a celebration of all the independent artists who have worked tirelessly behind scenes over the last year.

“HIDE” launches on Saturday 31st of July and opens to the public from 10am to 5pm in Bridge Street Studio Gallery throughout the week. There will be opportunities to visit the gallery space, meet the artists, and purchase original artworks. The Studios strictly adhere to current government guidelines.

According to ceramicist Sarah McKenna, “We are so excited to be part of the SEEK Contemporary Urban Arts Festival programme this year. We have been

very busy creating behind closed doors, and we can’t wait to showcase our new work, inspired by the history of Dundalk’s many iconic figures. We are really looking forward to welcoming people back into our gallery.”

Bridge Street Studios artists’ work is available to purchase through their website and from the studio gallery on Saturdays; as well as from outlets throughout Ireland and further afield. The members also provide a commission service for individuals and corporate clients who wish to purchase original artworks. Creative Spark is delighted to break ground for expansion Creative Spark is delighted to have broken ground for the expansion of its existing building in Muirhevnamor. This comes at an exciting time for the community hub, following the recent publication of its strategic plan for 2021-2023.

Staff and Board members are looking forward to the realisation of the extended facility which will include an Enterprise FabLab and a Community Café to encourage social interactions between Creative Spark members, visitors and the local community. The reality of Covid-19 has impacted Creative Spark’s ability to engage face-to-face with its community and the team is hopeful that normality will have resumed in time for the café’s launch early next year.

Enterprise FabLab will provide access to a suite of state-of-the-art digital fabrication hardware and software co-located with the thriving enterprise centre. It will stimulate enterprise and advance creativity, innovation and education in the North-East region through the establishment of a digital fabrication enterprise and co-working initiative.

The extension to the

building has been designed by local company Van Dijk Architects and the construction work is being undertaken by DCM Contracts.

Creative Spark’s ambition is to remain a centre of creativity and innovation, as well as generating and encouraging a collaborative environment where members of the community, SMEs and educators can exchange

ideas, creating economic opportunities and development within the community.

Creative Spark is looking to the future with its current building, in tandem with the Creative Spark Downtown project; the team hopes to generate prosperity and opportunity to the region supporting local business and the arts, design and manufacturing sectors.

It’s another year of “staycations” and holidays at home, so as the weather improves, many of us will be taking day trips and longer journeys across Ireland. Before your mind wanders to scenic trips along the west coast, it’s important to ensure your car is ready and prepared for the longer journeys the summer months may ask of it. Now is a great time to give your car the once over, inside and out.

TYRES—Your tyres keep you on the straight and narrow so it pays to look after them. Now is the time to check the tread depth on all four of them – while the legal minimum is 1.6mm, we recommend no less than 3mm for safe driving.

Don’t forget to check the tyres for signs of wear and tear too, and consult a tyre specialist if you have any concerns.

Finally, top them up with air.

You can do this at many petrol stations or invest in a portable tyre inflator to carry with you – check your manual or search online to find out the right tyre pressure for your car’s make and model.

Oh, and make sure you have a spare if there’s space for one in your vehicle.

OIL—If you want to keep your car running smoothly, you need to do a regular check of the quantity and condition of the oil in your engine – monthly and before any long journey.

Make sure you have enough oil – and that it’s in good nick – by using the dipstick in your engine.

Park on level ground and make sure the engine has been off for a few minutes to let it cool and settle. Locate and remove the dipstick, wipe clean with a cloth and replace it fully. Then pull it out and check the oil level against the markings on the stick.

These vary from engine to engine but you should be able to see two marks – high and low. If the oil level is between the two marks then you have no problem. If it’s below the lower mark then add some oil – make sure to check which type is right for your car. Be sure not to overfill the engine as this can get very messy.

COOLANT—The principles above also apply for engine coolant – it keeps things cool in summer and acts as antifreeze in winter so it’s very important to keep track of how much you have.

SCREEN WASH & WIPERS— Top up your screen wash reservoir before any long journey, and keep some in the boot in case you ever run out. Here’s a tip – decant some into a small bottle so you can leave the big jug at home.

Take a close look at your windscreen wipers too – if they are causing streaks or smears as they wipe, or if you can see any damage to the rubber, then it’s time to replace them.

SATNAV—When is the last time you updated your satnav?

You should really do it every three to six months, as road layouts can change and new developments and roads are being built or altered all the time. It’s also important to do so before a big trip. If you have the manual handy, it will take you through the process of updating your maps. If not, head to the manufacturer’s website for instructions and downloads. You may need to register first, so have your device’s serial number handy.

You’ll also need a USB connector for your device – if you’ve lost yours you should be able to find a replacement on the manufacturer’s website or by searching online.

Why not take the opportunity to treat your motor to a thorough clean – inside and out?

Take it to a high quality valeting service for a professional job that will leave the interior and boot spotless and fragrant. Finish the job with a hand wash and wax – many firms will do both for a single fee.
