THE closure of three local businesses in the hospitality sector in quick succession has led for calls locally for the government to support the restaurant industry by reinstating the 9% VAT rate on food. That 9% VAT rate was introduced by the government in November of 2020 in a measure designed to help the hospitality industry through COVID.
However, last year the rate was increased back to 13.5% which according to the Restaurants Association of Ireland is one of the main causes of the spate of recent business closures, not only in Dundalk, but nationwide.
In Dundalk there have been three local businesses who announced they will no longer be trading with Coffee Corner, The Townhouse restaurant and McAteers Food House all closing their doors for the final time in recent weeks.
McAteers Food House on Clanbrassil Street (where Joe Biden paid a well documented visit last year during his time in Dundalk) announced the news they were closing on social media, citing rising costs as the main factor behind their decision.

More businesses in hospitality sector will close if government don’t step in
From Page 1
“Today, we are bringing you some sad news. Unfortunately as of this morning, McAteers The Food House will cease trading.
It has been a difficult few years (as it has been for everyone else ) & has become harder by the day to keep the ship afloat. Brexit did not help & Covid changed so much. Now all these issues currently experienced in the hospitality industry such as really high food costs, energy, packaging & just basic supplies, together with this governments insistence on keeping the vat rate at 13.5% instead of 9% & all the extras they have thrown onto the small employer, has made it impossible for us to continue trading.
“As much as we would love to stay open, there is only so much we can charge for a sandwich
before it becomes a total rip- off to the customer & as it stands, the way we like to run our business, means our current revenue is falling short to keep the doors open. So we have decided to close before the waters get too rough!,” read the statement. Adrian Cummins, CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, said the closure of hos-
pitality businesses in Dundalk was heartbreaking but not surprising.
“The high level of hospitality business closures seen recently in Dundalk is heartbreaking but sadly not surprising. It follows a trend of two food-led businesses closing each day across the country. These restaurants, cafés and pubs aren’t closing
because they are quiet.
“They are closing because costs have skyrocketed in recent years in areas ranging from food to energy, labour costs to VAT. In Budget 2025, we need the Government to reinstate the 9% VAT rate on food. It’s the only show in town to stop the closures and secure our industry’s future,” he stated.
Locally, Paddy
Malone from the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, echoed those sentiments saying the 9% VAT rate should never have been increased.
“I have been banging this drum for a long time now. We need the government to understand that a robust tourism industry needs a vibrant restaurant industry. Whatever costs can be reduced should be reduced. The Chamber have been in contact with local businesses in the hospitality sector and we have heard how their bills have doubled, trebled and even quadrupled in some cases over the last couple of years.
“It is so sad to see local businesses announce their closure over the last week or two and there is no doubt that this will continue to happen if the govern-
ment don’t step up and help them. This is a pandemic affecting the entire industry and we need to help them. These businesses in the hospitality sector, have faced huge rises in costs, such as rent, rates, insurance, energy, utilities and the wholesale cost of food and drinks.
“I actually will be on a zoom call with Minister for Finance, Jack Chambers this afternoon and I will be again highlighting the devastating effect the 13.5% VAT rate is having in the hospitality sector. As I said, we need to see how a thriving restaurant sector will help tourism. Will people continue to come to our country if the price of a meal keeps rising and if there are very few places to dine due to restaurants closing? These businesses need help and they need it immediately,” warned Paddy.
Eve’s final fling in Paris
Inspirational Eve looking to sign off Paralympic career in style
EVE McCrystal will sign off on a glittering Paralympic career in Paris as she looks to add to her collection of three gold medals and two silvers across the 2016 and 2020 Paralympic Games. Acting as a pilot for her tandem partner Katie George Dunleavy the Jenkinstown native has also won five gold medals at UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships over the past decade.
Now at the age of 46 McCrystal says she can hardly believe the ten year journey she has undertook across three paralympic games is almost at an end.
“I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for a decade now. It’s kind of surreal to be honest. My kids have grown up with all this and I am so thrilled that they will get to see me in action at these games. In 2016 in Rio they were too young to fly off to the other side of the world while Tokyo was during Covid. They are 15 and 16 now so they are actually really excited to come to Paris and cheer
Eve McCrystal.
me on and I’m just really excited to have them here. They are flying out this weekend to see me race with Katie in the velodrome and then they will come back the following weekend for the road race.
“It’s been a long journey and I’m just really proud of what I have done in the sport. I’ve dedicated myself completely to this and I’ve given everything. Some people don’t realise the commitment you have to give as a pilot. I have been training for six days a week every week for the past ten years. It’s been tough but I am so proud that I never
wavered or took a step back. I’m 46 now so I have been pretty much the oldest in training camps for a few years now. Doubts began to creep into my head and I wondered was I past it but I just came to a realization that all of those doubts were bullshit and I refused to allow age to become a barrier,” explains Eve.
“I’m with Katie on the track and we have a very tough race ahead of us.
This time there are three British bikes who are training full time in a professional set up. The odds are against us but we will give everything. This time I have took a
step back and have decided not to partner Katie on the road. Hers is a gold medal bike and the road demands longer hours of training which I wasn’t sure I could commit to. I will partner with Josephine Healion on the road who is making her debut in the Paralympics and this will be a really good learning experience for her. She will be a contender in four years time in LA and these games will bring her on a ton.
“These for sure will be my last games and I just want to enjoy every second. I was watching the Olympics at home last month and like eve-
rybody else around the country I was watching with pride at our amazing athletes. To think that I am going to be the one that people back home will be cheering over the next couple of weeks is kind of surreal. When this is all done, I hope that I have been able to inspire some people and that maybe I will have instilled some of my work ethic into my daughters who see how hard their Mam
works every single day. My nephew Rian is doing brilliant things in cycling at underage level and I am so proud of him. My next role will be the mad aunty cheering him on at every event,” laughs Eve. Eve will take to the track this Friday with Katie George Dunleavy in the velodrome before finishing her Paralympic career a week later with Josephine Healion in the road race.

Marian Park residents gearing up for 65th anniversary celebrations
THE residents of Marian Park in Dundalk are gearing up for major celebrations this September, as the Dundalk housing estate marks 65 years since its first tenants took residence in 1959. The newly established Marian Park Residents Committee has been incredibly active since November 2023, ensuring the place remains tidy and preparing for the upcoming celebrations.
The oldest living resident in Marian Park since the houses were established is Theresa Bellew 99 who moved into Marian Park on April 5th 1959 and the oldest resident living in Marian Park is Margaret O’Hagan 94. According to James McCrave who is chairman of the Resident’s Committee, Marian Park was a wonderful place to grow up in and famed for being a close knit community.
“It’s the first time Marian Park will celebrate a birthday and we are looking forward to getting together and marking the occasion. It was a great place to grow up and is very well-known for being a close-knit
community. The activities in the estates were funded by the families themselves with no states funding available.
“Due to the large crowds expected on the weekend of the celebrations, the members of the Garda Siochana will be on foot control over the two days to ensure everything runs smoothly with roads closing from 12:00pm to 6:30pm on Sunday 8th September around the horse shoe in Marian Park estates,” explained James.
“The committee has plenty in store this September for the 65th anniversary celebrations. On Saturday 7 September from 11:15am –
12:15pm, the St Brigid Pipe Band will march around the streets in Marian Park and play some tunes. Also on the Saturday, from 1pm to 5pm, there will be a Family Fun Day at the Redeemer Resource Centre for residents, kids, and grandkids.
“There will be an obstacle course, bouncy castles, slides, and face painting. On Sunday 8th September at 2pm, there will be an outdoor mass for deceased residents of Marian Park on the astro pitch. The parish priests will bless the street after mass. This will be followed by a street party from 3:30pm to 7:00pm.
“Then on Friday 20th September, there will
be a Marian Park reunion for past and present residents at the Lisdoo Arms on the Newry Road with doors opening at 6:30pm. Expect live music and a disco by Paddy Mac, with special guest Beki Hemingway and husband guitarist Randy Kerkman. Tickets are €20 and are available now,” he added. Contact James at 087 2202173 for more information about the celebration events.. The Marian Park Residents Committee extends their thanks to all residents, past residents, and volunteers and the Garda Siochana for their support and assistance in preparations for the upcoming celebrations.

Concerns about local children expressed at community meeting
LOCAL FF Councillor for Dundalk South, Shane Mc Guinness, spoke and took questions at a well-attended public meeting held in the Community Centre in Blackrock on Tuesday evening the 20th of August past. This meeting was
called by the recently formed Haggardstown & Blackrock Community Forum and chaired by Hermione Duffy with the main topic of the night being the draft Dundalk area plan.
A large crowd of over 90 people attended from all sporting bodies, Tidy
Towns, Residents’ associations, mainstream business, and generally concerned residents. There was a large map put up on the wall which showed people, the present and future zoning of our parish and community. Everybody spoke pas-
sionately and got very much involved and Cllr Mc Guinness took questions on every aspect of parking, roads, Greenways, poor transport plan, and creche facilities and the real impact that, a now very densely populated community is having to confront on a daily basis. The meeting reflected strongly, the growing strain on our village’s infrastructure. According to Cllr.
McGuinness, the biggest concerns voiced on the evening was the impact of the population explosion on the children in the area with concerns expressed about their mental health and well being.
“A need for a primary and secondary school is now vital in Haggardstown and the lack of open space and green area on the map showed people in real time, why
we are where we are. And of course, a need for a further community centre and playing fields are vital and now urgently needed,” stated the recently elected Fianna Fáil councillor.
“I believe that action is needed now, and that a lack of local political will has left our area without the support and planning that is now needed and that we owe this to our children and
the generations to come. Maybe an urgent town and village regeneration feasibility study for the community is also required in the background to make sure that we get it right now,” he added.
Cllr. McGuinness urged people to reflect their views by submitting submissions and this will allow the council to also think strongly about Haggardstown and Blackrock and the new development plan which will be due out towards the year end. The committee of the Forum will be meeting again on Tuesday night to discuss the large feedback from the meeting and decide on the necessary steps to take before the 10th of September which is the closing date for the submissions.

GARDAÍ, The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group and the Dundalk Sub Aqua Search and Rescue Unit attended an unusual scene on Blackrock beach last Friday evening when two dolphins got stuck in the sand at the beach.
A post on social media from Garda Siochana Dundalk said that the dolphins were discovered by a group of teenagers who raised the alarm immediately when they saw the sea creatures were in trouble.
“Among the many calls to Dundalk Garda Station on Friday evening was one that had come through to us about two dolphins that had become stuck in the sand at the beach when the tide went out at Blackrock, Co. Louth.
“Luckily, a group of teenagers had discovered them both, while out walking and were extremely worried about their welfare so made an emergency call.
“Time was really of the essence as the tide is not due back in until 1am and hours had passed since it had gone out - the dolphins will have been struggling.
“In a real show in team work of a Friday evening, we joined locals and volunteers with the Irish Whales and Dolphin Group to get them back to sea. And off they went,” read the post.
Chris O’Donnell from the Dundalk Sub Aqua Search and Rescue Unit described how the dolphins were carried to the river as part of the rescue operation.
“Two dolphins were stranded on Blackrock beach this afternoon. As the tide was on the way out it was clear the dolphins would need help to get back out the bay.
“They were carried out across the strand to the river and then gently let into the water. We walked the dolphins out along the river to the mouth of the river. Finally, it was great to see them making their way out the bay. The rescue team made it safely back to shore before dark,” explained Chris.

Search for remains of British soldier Robert Nairac begins in Faughart GP crisis in Louth states Ó Murchú
AN area of farmland in Faughart, just outside Dundalk was the location for a search for the remains of Captain Robert Nairac, who was abducted and murdered by the IRA while working undercover. The search has been organised by the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains (ICLVR) and is the first search for his remains since he was shot and buried in 1977.
The ICLVR held a press conference yesterday stating they had received credible information to begin a search on private land in Faughart. Lead investigator Jon Hill said he was ‘hopeful’ that the search could be successful.
Captain Robert Nairac was a British Army officer in the Grenadier
Guards and was just 29 when he was abducted from The Three Steps pub in Dromintee, Armagh during an undercover operation by the Provisional Irish Republican Army on his fourth tour of duty in Northern Ireland as a Military Intelligence Liason Officer. He was subsequently taken across the border to Flurry Bridge
in County Louth where he was killed.
Along with Joe Lynskey, Columba McVeigh and Seamus Maguire, Mr Nairac is one of four of the Disappeared, - all abducted, murdered and buried in secret graves by the IRA - still missing.
Speaking to the Dundalk Leader a member of the ICLVR said the
search would continue for as long as it takes. He stated that the area in question where they were searching was less than an acre and that the land they were working on was much better than what they had been used to previously in Monaghan where they were searching through boglands to find missing remains.
THE government is ‘failing miserably’ to get to grips with the GP crisis as new figures from doctors’ organisation, the Irish College of GPs (ICGP) shows there has been a reduction in the numbers operating in Louth, according to Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú.
In a new study published last week, ICGP showed how there are 106 GPs available in Louth in 2023, a reduction of 2.8% from the previous year’s figure of 109.
That equates to one GP per 76 GPs per 100,000 people and shows that doctor numbers are not growing fast enough to meet demand.
The worst place in the State for GP numbers is Meath, with 54 per 100,000 population, while the best places were Galway and Waterford, with 102 GPs in each county per 100,000 people.
The World Health Organisation says an adequate number of GPs per 100,000 population is 100.
Deputy Ó Murchú said the report showed a worrying trend in Louth, with a reduction in the number of doctors. He said he
had raised the issue of the lack of availability of GPs a number of times in Leinster House.
Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘The government is failing miserably on this issue.
‘I have seen in it my constituency office where people come to us looking for help in getting a GP in the Dundalk area. They have tried eight, ten places and are told they are not taking any new patients on.
‘It’s particularly difficult for private patients, or those with-
out a medical card, because those who qualify for a medical card will be allocated a GP by the HSE when they are approved for the GMS scheme.
‘The government needs to get its act together and ensure there is proper workforce planning so that there is an increase in GP numbers. They also need to focus on the fact that the private practice model of doctors’ surgeries is not working in modern Ireland and the solution will involve greater State intervention’.
British soldier Robert Nairac was abducted and killed in 1977.

Newcomer looking to throw his hat into Louth General Election picture
By Paul Byrne
DAVID Carroll, who has strong local links, is about to throw his hat
into the ring for the upcoming General Election. David is planning to run under the banner of his recently formed
party ‘Taimid’ and says he will be a voice for the people who feel unrepresented by politicians in Co. Louth.
David is originally from Dublin but lived in Dundalk for a number of years before emigrating to Australia. Since returning to Ireland the financial trader says he has identified numerous issues which are holding Ireland back and he insists that the right people aren’t currently in charge to help Ireland return to prosperity.
“ To put it simply when you are in charge of running a country you need to run it like a business. Unfortunately, there are very few if any businessmen currently in government and that is why there are so many people and businesses in our communities struggling right now.
“We need to reduce the cost of living and we can do that by reducing the VAT from 23% to 11% as a standard flat rate for everything which will automatically reduce the cost of
living and other expenses. We need to bring in investors to the country. There are millions and millions of dollars worth of rich global nomads out there who are traveling the world for tax reasons. We need to entice these people to invest in our towns.
Look at Xerox in Dundalk. I personally know of a number of potential investors who
would be interested in investing up there. We need our government to seek out these people and get them to spend their millions in our country. We must strive to turn Ireland into the number one destination for all small, medium, businesses (SMB) worldwide,” stated David.
“We are also far too reliant on the Euro. We
saw what happened in 2008 when our banking system collapsed. Taimid will bring back the Irish Punt as a dual currency for domestic use only as a Gold backed currency.
This should ensure that unstable markets will have minimal impact on Ireland along with our “Central Bank of Ireland” responsible for Banking and financial regulation.
“I have a great job and don’t need to do this but I have a strong political background and standing for election and making my country prosper is something I need to do.
I am currently looking to move back to Louth from Dublin and I’m currently looking at houses in Blackrock. I love Dundalk but I think it’s fair to say there is so much wasted space in the town. Look at the site of the old Superquinn which has been sitting dormant for so long now. That whole area needs to be redeveloped.

“We need to ask the people of Dundalk what they want. Bring it back to the old system of town square meetings. Let the people tell us what they want changed. I feel current politicians have lost touch with their communities and that many people feel they have nobody to represent them. We’ve seen the worries from people over the migrant issues. We need a system in place to ensure migrant claims are assessed on same day of arrival. Persons of a character such as criminal offenders will be returned to their country of origin with a seven year re-entry ban and anybody who meets the required standard will be welcomed with open arms,” stated David.

“Taimid also has ambitions for a 32 county Ireland but first of all we need to fix the 26 counties. We need to be in a strong position so that we are at the stage where we are offering the six counties something they really can’t say no to. Transparency is sorely missing in government today and that is something I want to put front and centre of my campaign. I am the founder of this party and I intend to be in it for the long haul. If I am not successful in the upcoming election, I will be going again for the next one.
This is something I’m deeply passionate about and although I know I’m up against a big political machine, my job is to let the people know what I stand for and show them the possibilities of a better Ireland with people who know all about business and how to make money making the decisions,” concluded David.

Blackrock Festival Boosts Local Economy with 10,000 Extra Visitors
THE recent summer festival in Blackrock has been hailed as a tremendous success, bringing an additional 10,000 visitors to the village over the course of the week. The event, organized by local businessman Killian Allen, was a celebration of community, culture, and fun, with activities and entertainment for all ages.
Mr. Allen expressed his gratitude to the local business community and Louth County Council for their unwavering support, which was crucial in making the festival a reality.
“Festivals like this are vital for our local economy,” he said. “The extra footfall not only benefits local businesses but also strengthens our community spirit.”
The event brought a wave of nostalgia for longtime residents, including 102-year-old Pat Wright, who will celebrate her birthday next month. Ms. Wright, who was out enjoying the festivities, remarked, “The original festival atmosphere is back in Blackrock.”
Dundalk
Brass Band
Dundalk Brass Band’s final gig of the summer which takes place in St.Helena’s park on Sunday September 1st @3pm.
We will be playing a broad selection of modern and classic music and we will also have a few special solo’s from our musicians.
It will be kindly supported by Dundalk Credit Union who will be providing complementary ice creams on the day.
All welcome to this free event at the old bandstand in Dundalk’s oldest music venue, St Helena’s Park Bandstand.
Mattress Amnesty
The festival was also a hit with families, including Samantha Gilligan and her two sons, Charlie and Alphie Allen, who were spotted soaking up the fun.
As the festival concluded, Mr. Allen reflected on the success of the first year and promised even bigger surprises for next year’s event.
“Bringing magic, smiles, and memories was our mission, and I’m proud to say we’ve achieved that,” he said.
With the festival’s positive impact on the local economy and the overwhelming community support, it’s clear that Blackrock’s summer festival has established itself as an essential event for the village.
Plans are already underway to make next year’s festival even better, with Mr. Allen inviting the community to share their feedback and suggestions.
Darts: Dunn and Dusted
LAST Thursday saw the Quigley Cup return to competition action.
Named after Michael Quigley, the competition has always been well supported over the years by members of his family.
This year saw the Cup played as the Final event in The Northend Bar Summer Series Of Darts.
Not only were the 21 teams present trying to win the Cup, they were also hoping to gain some much needed ranking points.
Sufficient points were picked up early on by Padraic O’Rourke, Eamonn Rogan, Peter Grennan & Cian Roddy to make the top 15 Qualifying for Finals night before being eliminated from the Competition on the night.
Alan Dullaghan was hoping to make it a hattrick of wins in the Northend in recent weeks but despite him & his partner, Paul Monahan throwing well all evening they would eventually be knocked out by Nipper Boyce & Raymie
Carroll in the semifinals.
Paddy Gibney & David Gonnelly were also hoping to make up ground in the league table and after causing a small upset in beating Ciaran Traynor & Wayne Fry, they too would be knocked out in the semi-finals by Daniel Dunn & Conor Dunn.
Daniel Dunn was hoping to win the competition for the 2nd time, having last won it 27 years ago with his father, Tommy (R.I.P).
Tommy passed away unexpectedly 24 years ago, at the time of his death Tommy was widely regarded as
the finest left handed dart thrower in Ireland.
On the night, Daniel had paired up with his nephew Conor and as a team they had swept aside all challengers all evening and their form continued into the Final as despite the best efforts of Nipper Boyce and Raymie Carroll, the Dunn men would go on to secure a 3-0 victory.
To great celebrations, the Dunn men collected their trophy from James & Frankie Quigley and in doing so Conor became the 3rd generation of his family to win the competition.
Next up in the Summer Series Of Darts is an over 50’s competition next Friday night, 30th August, this is the final event before the Finals.
This competition is open to anyone that wants to throw a game of darts and there’s 1 Final place available for Finals night for this event.
Big thanks to all the players and also our Sponsors : Mullens Roden Place, Bellurgan Engineering, 5’s Taxis, Smashers, Shang Garden Chinese Takeaway Louth Village, Northend Bar & Ring A Drink.
