Sports Emmy for ‘One Armed Wonder’ doc

THE brilliant documentary about the late Northern Irish, Dundalk FC footballer Jimmy Hasty won the outstanding short documentary prize at the Sports Emmy Awards in New York last week.

The UEFA documentary, One-Armed Wonder: The Extraordinary Story of Jimmy Hasty from director Richard Milway tells the incredible story of the murdered Belfast striker who lost an arm as a teenager but still enjoyed a successful football career. Jimmy had to have his arm amputated when he was just 14 years of age when he was involved in a work accident during his first day working at the Jennymount Mill in North Belfast.

The Belfast man defied the odds by becoming a star

striker for Dundalk FC and was part of the side who famously wrote their name into the record books by becoming the first Irish side to win away in European competition as goals from Dermot Cross and Jimmy Hasty secured a 2-1 win against the Swiss champions FC Zurich.

It was former Dundalk chairman Jim Malone who spotted Jimmy’s potential after seeing the Belfast man play for Newry and although the one armed player’s signing was met with ridicule and skepticism in some quarters, the new arrival would prove all his doubters wrong during his debut season with the Lilywhites with Jimmy scoring 19 goals to help Dundalk to their first league title in 30 years.

Jimmy would go on to score over 100 goals for Dundalk FC, securing his status as a club legend. He would later retire and settle down back in Belfast with wife Margaret and his two sons Paul and Martin.

Tragedy would come later on in his life however when he was walking to his place of work

at a bookmakers in Belfast. On October 11th 1974, while walking down Brougham St., Jimmy was shot dead by the Protestant Action force in a sectarian ‘tit for tat’ shooting which would kill Jimmy who was aged just 38 at the time.

York, the documentary deservedly was awarded a prestigious Sports Emmy in the Outstanding Short Documentary category and film director Richard Milway was there to pick up the award. In a statement Richard thanked everybody who had helped bring Jimmy’s story to a wider audience.

“Everyone at Noah Media Group and UEFA is thrilled that The Extraordinary Story of Jimmy Hasty won Outstanding Short Documentary at the Sport Emmys.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without all the help from Dundalk FC, Paddy Malone and his family and of course Jimmy’s family - his sons Martin and Paul and wife Margaret.

“Jimmy was an incredible man and this award is testament to that. It’s amazing to see a story virtually unknown outside Dundalk and Belfast be recognised on the international stage and we’re glad more and more people are discovering Jimmy,” stated Richard.

called’ affordable housing scheme needs to be addressed

THE ‘so-called’ affordable housing scheme at Cois Farraige in Blackrock, where ten houses were offered to applicants at a ‘discounted rate’ of €305,000, and just five were sold, was raised in Leinster House last week by Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú.

During a Sinn Féin motion on housing in the Dáil, Deputy Ó Murchú outlined the problems with the scheme.

He said: ‘Not for the first time, I brought up the so-called affordable housing scheme at Cois Farraige, Blackrock.

‘In fairness to Louth County Council, it extended the time to ensure people could actually apply.

‘Of the initial 26 applicants – I do not know how many more applied later – only five were able to meet the criteria.

‘While there were meant to be ten affordable houses offered, only five applicants could meet the criteria and get a house.

‘Therefore, there was a loss even on an attempt by the Government.

‘I would like to reinforce the point that council officials made, namely,

that the issues were the thresholds, criteria and difficulty.

‘The fact is that the Government’s own system is absolutely failing the people. It is failing those in Louth County Council and other councils throughout the State that are trying to employ it.

‘When something is broken, that needs to be accepted. The Government needs to examine how the problem is addressed and then move on’.

Deputy Ó Murchú also highlighted the high cost of rents, as well as

a lack of available rental properties.

He said: ‘We do not need to see the Daft.ie report to realise people have unaffordable rents, if lucky enough to have got a property.

‘In Louth, €1,661 was the average rent for the first quarter of 2024.

If you search on daft.ie for a rental

property in Dundalk and its surrounds, one will find only 11 available.

‘For just Dundalk, only nine are available. The cost to rent a threebedroom house is €1,750. A fourbedroom house would cost €2,450.

‘A three-bedroom apartment would cost €2,200. I could go on but not for too long because there is not a whole pile of properties available. This is what we need to deal with’.

He said the Housing Commission report shows ‘systemic failures, ineffective decision-making, reactive policy-making and risk aversion, all of which impact supply and undermine affordability.’

He said: ‘Solutions are being provided and we need to finally see action from the Government rather than the abject failure on housing, which is the cause of many of the issues with which we are all dealing’.

An Táin Director welcomes Minister’s funding support for artists

THE Director of An Tain Arts Centre has welcomed a speech by Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin about the Status of the Artist in Ireland.

An Tain Director Paul Hayes told the Dundalk Leader that Minister Martin’s

speech was “a very strong statement”.

In the statement,

Minister Martin said:

“The work of artists inspires and reflects the rhythm of the everyday, as well as momentous events in public life. At home and abroad the arts are the hallmark of our creativity as a people.

“I would like to say at the outset how impor-

tant the arts are to me personally. All my life, I have loved the arts, especially music and our traditional arts, which have a special place in my heart.

“I have always known the importance of music and art in enriching our lives and enhancing our wellbeing. So, it was a particular privilege for me to become Minister with responsi-

bility for the arts.”

She added: “I know that too often, artists struggle for the level of income to meet even their basic needs.

“That is why when I became Minister, I was determined to focus on supporting professional arts practice.

“And while there is always work still to be done, I am pleased that this Government has

done more than any other in our history to demonstrate to artists that they are valued, that their work is appreciated and that the contribution they make to enhancing all of our lives is understood.”

She continued: “But the signature innovation of this Government in terms of publicly funded support for our artists is the Basic

Income for the Arts pilot scheme.

“Previous surveys have pointed to precarious incomes being all too common for artists. Therefore, the delivery of the Basic Income for the Arts has been a key priority for me.

“I believe that this is a once in a generation policy intervention that has the potential to transform the lives of artists.

“Income precarity is of course an issue for artists across the world. Last year, the European Parliament adopted a proposal for an EU framework to improve the living and working conditions for cultural and creative workers.”

According to Mr Hayes, he believes that Minister Martin “seems to get the arts and have it in her background and understand it”.

“An Tain Arts Centre is ten-years-old this

year. Previously it was a presentation theatre run by the local council,” he said.

“It took An Tain two years to get Arts Council funding but it’s been increasing every year. We have two core funders – the council and the Arts Council but we would like to see parity in the funding between the two.

“We want the local funding to match the

Arts Council. The Basic Income Support pilot scheme has been a game changer for those taking part.”

Mr Hayes added: “It means artists can turn down non-arts work. Now, we have to see if we can extend it to actors. Only 150 professional actors qualified for the pilot scheme. Overall, the speech was very positive.”

Women’s Aid Dundalk campaign to end violence against women and girls

WOMEN’S Aid Dundalk joined Seun Grace Atiroko along with Niamh from Akidwa to support the Women Intercultural Network (WIN InSpo) Health Ambassador Team for Akidwa where they talked about Female Genital Mutilation FGM, the signs, symptoms, actions needed to stop this practice on young girls and women.

Win InSpo is Founded by Seun Grace Atiroko to support, inspire, uplift, and empower women.

Female genital mutilation is a gender based violence that is done on

young girls or adults and is a barbaric practice that shouldn’t be done to anyone and is very dangerous but parents do it out of the belief that they are helping the children so the parents needs to be re-oriented. The orientation of the cultural practice of FGM needs to be abolished and all the parents needs to be reoriented to realise that the practice is bad. This means not condemning the parents but condemning the actions and the cultural beliefs that was embedded in them and educating the parents.

Driving instructor Claire passionate about road safety

A DRIVING instructor from Mullacrew, Louth Village is calling on drivers to “take responsibility” for their driving.

Claire McEneaney (nee Murphy) is a 38-year-old mother-of-two who lives in Lisdoonan, Carrickmacross with her husband, Peter.

“I’m a mother to an eight-year-old boy called Peter James, and a sixyear-old girl called Amelia,” said Claire.

“I was a pharmaceutical technician in Dundalk for 16 years before qualifying as a driving instructor over three years ago.

“I set up Claire’s School of Motoring and just celebrated three years in business earlier this month.”

Claire added: “I always had a passion for driving and road safety and I always had the ambition to own my own business.

“Both of my parents were self-employed. It’s hard in ways at times as I do the book work and marketing but the rewards are great.

“I can take my two

young children to their activities and work it around my diary.”

She continued: “I love the challenge of it and the one-on-one interaction with clients. There is a huge increase in 17-yearolds who want to learn how to drive.

“Their parents also want them to learn properly with a trained instructor and to pass the test. Lessons are really important but practice is equally as important.

“I feel the standard of driving varies greatly even though there’s a standardised driving test.

I fully agree that there are some excellent drivers on the road. However, a

great number of drivers are not safe and socially responsible drivers on our roads.

“A huge amount of people don’t use the correct lanes and signals on roundabouts, observation is lacking. Distracted driving is a huge issue.

I witness people using their mobile phones daily whilst driving.

“Driving is one of the most dangerous things that most of us do daily as the potential to cause fatalities and injuries is very high. Yet we carry it out most times without thinking about the importance of road safety. In fact, for most of us the last time we considered our driving ability was when we sat our driving test.

“Last year 184 people were killed on Irish roads and thousands more were seriously injured.

“We often fall into the trap of overestimating our driving abilities, believing we are better drivers than we actually are. This false confidence can lead to risky behaviors.

I think a lot more needs to be done to improve road safety. I think we need an overhaul. We must commit ourselves to been safe and responsible, never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs , always wear a seatbelt, never use a mobile phone or become distracted while driving and drive within the speed limits.

“Practice in a safe environment such as a quiet car park at first. Don’t immediately go out into the road.”

Claire concluded: “Try to remain calm. The RSA says a minimum of 12 professional lessons should be taken but it takes around 20 lessons to pass the driving test comfortably.

“People of all ages come to me for driving lesson including older people in their 60s who have different life circumstances for various reasons and need to learn how to drive.

“You are never too old to learn how to drive. It’s a great skill to have.”

White smoke at last as plans revealed for old Dunnes Stores building

MARTIN McElligott (Town Centre Commercial Manager) explains: Since the closure of the Dunnes store site due to its relocation across to the Marshes shopping centre in 2009, a move that had been part of a worrying national trend in town centres all across Ireland at that time. While this model was been replicated cross sector, it has to be said that this one move has left an indelible mark in the psyche of the street but moreover the people of Dundalk to this very day!

The truth is that Park Street still has a lot to offer its visitors, it has a wonderfully diverse mix of retail, convenience, hospitality and of course it also hosts the largest concentration of the Town’s core night time economy providers. It’s fair to say that there is still a lot of work to be done but I am hopeful with this announcement that we could see a step change for the betterment of the street’s future.

The Dundalk BIDs company and its directors have been working very hard across many different channels with all associated stakeholders, to help break the

deadlock on this important landmark site in the town.

I would also take the time to acknowledge the efforts of Mr Michael Gunne from REA GUNNE and current director on the board of BIDs for his push in securing a future long term tenancy for the site. These types of negotiations are complex in nature and take time to be realised, but I do feel that the proposed new usage could prove be a big hit for park street, moreover the town centre.

Michael Gunne explains: The buzz word on this new venture is Competitive Socialising’ while title may be a new term, it is certainly not a new concept. People were throwing darts in pubs as early as the fifteenth century, and anyone who’s played a game of pool in a bar or taken part in a pub quiz knows that a bit of healthy competition makes for a great evening. But in the past few years, the concept of competitive socialising has been revitalised, representing the biggest development to the leisure sector in many decades.

It’s a straightforward idea: cus-

tomers play a simple game in a buzzy venue with music, food, and drink. Most competitive socialising locations are largeformat sites found near business districts, with a vibrant and Instagram-friendly decor designed to attract millennial and Gen Z customers.

In the past ten years, we’ve seen a steady flow of new brands emerge. There’s Swingers (offering crazy golf), Puttshack (mini golf), Flight Club (darts), Electric Shuffle (shuffleboard), Sixes (cricket) and Bounce (ping pong). Some are taking a techfirst approach: at Toca Social, customers can compete in a digital version of a football penalty shootout, while Immersive Gamebox has created a one-ofa-kind entertainment experience which allows visitors to immerse themselves in interactive gameplay and transport to a new world based on their favourite table top game, tv show or film. One of the newest players is F1® Arcade, which has revamped the traditional arcade concept to offer racing simulators with group socialising in mind.

Blackrock Tidy Towns preparing ahead of Judging Season

THE National Tidy Towns judging season is due to begin from the start of June. Blackrock is currently the holder of a gold medal and is county winner in the competition. We hold the position of tenth in the national standing, out of 884 entries, and second in our category. Residents are asked to bear in mind that the adjudication is based on all aspects of Blackrock, not just the work of the tidy towns committee. Marks are awarded under eight headings, community, streetscape and public spaces, nature and biodiversity, sustainability, tidi-

ness and litter control, residential streets and housing and approach roads streets and lanes.

Quite a wider variety of headings to show performance under. It is testament to the strong community spirit in the village as well as the commitment of many that such success has been achieved.

As we look forward to defending our title in the coming season you can help by: Keeping boundaries well presented, paint walls, control weeds; Cutting back growth where it impedes pedestrians on footpaths; Avoiding the use

of weedkiller, it’s bad for biodiversity and brown patches look unsightly; Assisting neighbours who might be elderly or unable to maintain their property; Considering coming out on our evenings of action (every Monday, meet at the Sundial 7.00pm, except bank holidays); Presenting your bins carefully, especially the green bin. See that the lid is secure and nothing can be blown out or that birds can’t attack it. Thank you for continuing to support your community.

Celebrating two years of Creative Spark Downtown Hub

ON Wednesday 22nd of May, Creative Spark Downtown Hub celebrated its 2nd anniversary. The celebrations coincided with European Co-working Day and the theme running throughout the day was well-being and connections, as we see these as two key benefits of co-working.

The day started with a gentle yoga practice facilitated by local Yogi Aine Fox, members were invited to join the session which focused on breath work and meditation followed by a coffee and some pastries before they started their working day.

We then welcomed representatives Liam Horan and Stephen Carolan

from Connected Hubs. ConnectedHubs.ie, part of the Western Development Commission, who broadcasted the fortnightly Connected Hubs meet-up call, welcoming European hub managers, live from the Downtown Hub. During the meet-up, we had the opportunity to highlight the facilities and services available at Downtown Hub to hubs around Ireland and Europe.

Our lunchtime session invited members, funders, staff, and the board of Creative Spark to come together and connect over some food and light refreshments.

Sarah Daly welcomed all attendees to the hub and discussed the background of Creative

Sparks’ second location. Hub manager Ciara Breen then ran through a short presentation highlighting the successes and activities Downtown has seen over the past two years.

The day finished with a Grow Remote open event in Mo Chara bar, where remote workers were welcomed to connect and socialise with each other while learning about the initiatives and supports available through the Grow Remote network.

“It was a great day and lovely to see connections forming throughout the day, it felt that we achieved what we had set out to do on the day.” –Ciara Breen Downtown Hub Manager.

Meet The Candidates: ARDEE

Adam Devine Green Party

I am Drogheda reared however Ardee is like a second home with my Granny Alice always bringing us here to see our family. I hope to give you a young progressive voice to choose on June 7th.

I want to fight to expand rural transport in Louth, increasing the frequency and reliability of LocalLink and Bus Éireann, and to reopen Dunleer Train Station.

We are so fortunate to have a stunning coastline, and many rivers and forests. I want to fight to keep them clean so we can enjoy them for many years to come, for us to enjoy and to bring in visitors to boost the local economy.

Dereliction is a huge issue that has only been allowed to grow. I want to fight to bring these empty spaces back, to use as homes or for community services.

I want to stand up for underrepresented people, and help make everyone feel safe and welcome in our community.

Jim Tenanty Independent

Cllr Jim Tenanty has served as a public representative since 1994 representing Ardee and Mid Louth and is contesting the lcal elections again this year.

When contacted by the Dundalk Leader asking if he would like to outline what he stands for and how he can help make Ardee better he stated that he was an old fashioned politician who is more interested in action rather than talking.

Bernie Conlon Independent

My name is Bernie Conlon and I am your independent county council representative for the Mid-Louth area. I was co-opted in 2021 after the untimely passing of my husband, councilor Hugh D. Conlon who worked tirelessly for the people of Louth.

My hometown is Dunleer and although I am relatively new to the council, I have gained vast experience and a passion for representing the people of Dunleer and beyond. I am proud to serve in my capacity as an independent representative and your vote this June election will ensure that this passion and dedication to our people continues to be guaranteed. Vote #1 Conlon.

John Sheridan Fianna Fail

First elected as a first time candidate in 2019, I have sought to bring a fresh new voice to local politics. I have championed many causes like remote and hybrid working as well as focusing on vacant properties in our towns and villages. I have not been afraid to speak up and speak out on local issues particularly on water quality, rural planning and ensuring a strong Mid-Louth voice is heard. I am passionate about many quality of life issues and have used my position to highlight those locally including facilities for younger people, climate action, rural community living, traffic calming and infrastructure like the Ardee bypass and Dunleer train station.

Niall McCreanor

Social Democrats

Hi, I’m Niall McCreanor

I’m running for election because I am deeply connected to our area. My family and I have called this community home for generations and I am committed to ensuring its prosperity for future generations.

I work in renewables and lecture part time in UCD and DIFE. I believe we could be doing so much more in the areas of housing affordability, enhancing community amenities and promoting environmental sustainability.

I’m passionate about addressing these issues head-on and advocating for positive change. I am passionate, hardworking and approachable and I would love the opportunity to represent you on Ardee County Council.

Phyllis Murphy

Living in Gilbertstown, Phyllis is a small business owner and a grandmother. She is looking after her grandchild due to the lack of adequate childcare in the area and also cares for her elderly father so appreciates the challenges faced by people of all ages in rural areas trying to access basic services.

As she has got older she has seen our rural communities become more isolated as services have been neglected or stripped from the area.

She wants to revitalise rural Ardee including transport links, lighting and investment in the roads.

Paula Butterly Fine Gael

“Since being co-opted in 2021 I have worked on issues such as planning, rural crime, transport, particularly school transport and services which for many rural areas are difficult if not often out of reach.

Continued support of our farming community, by raising their concerns at both local and national level, will remain a focus point of my work.

The development of our towns and villages and a resolution to dereliction has been and will be a key issue for me, as thriving urban centres are vital not only for the residents but for those in the surrounding areas.

Sustainable and balanced development of businesses, housing and services will continue to be key priorities for me as I believe they will guarantee thriving communities.”

Rachel Kerley Fine Gael

Rachel Kerley, I am 25 years old, a local election candidate for the Ardee Local Election Area. I was born and raised in Reaghstown, also home to the family business The Danny Boy Pub.

I am currently working as an Administrative Assistant in Leinster House.

I am a very determined young woman and I believe that Louth County Council needs a youthful voice to represent our communities and bring a new spirit to the table.

My key priorities include:

Supporting our local community groups,

Supporting our rural areas - improved street lighting, essential repairs and traffic calming measures. Ensuring our local areas have greater accessibility for people with disabilities.

I am Dolores Minogue and I live in Ardee and am married to Tom, with five adult children. This is my fourth election, focusing on achievements and ongoing projects.

Campaign Highlight: Advocating for the commencement of the Ardee Bypass.

Ardee Ambulance: Now completed and operational, enhancing our town’s emergency response capabilities.

Ardee Community Hospital: Nearing completion, it promises state-of-the-art facilities for our senior citizens and their families.

Education: Ardee Balapousta Primary School: A fantastic new build benefiting students and staff.

Ardee Educate Together Construction has begun, and we eagerly anticipate its opening.

Hot Meals Initiative: Introduced hot meals in local primary schools, benefiting students, staff, and parents.

Kate Karpenko Labour

My name is Kate Karpenko and I am the Labour Party candidate for Ardee in the local elections. I came to this country two years ago when I woke up to war in my home country of Ukraine. I have made a new home in Ardee and have been embraced by the local community and work at the NCBI shop in the heart of the town.

I want to repay this community for the welcome it has given me and I’ve been finding ways to do that since I got here. I want to harness the community spirit of the people of MidLouth to make it a place that works for all.

I want to see a comprehensive new traffic plan for Ardee and the re-opening of Dunleer Train Station. I’m campaigning for the re-opening of Ardee Castle and for a new greenway along the old railway line from Ardee to Dromin.

Pearse McGeough Sinn Fein

A native of Kilsaran, Pearse has been a Councillor for over 20 years having been first elected in 2004. He has represented the people of Mid-Louth on many issues including road safety/improvements, water services, housing adaptation grants, disabled person’s grants, housing, bus shelters, planning, flooding and the County Development Plan. Among the bigger issues he is working on currently is the regeneration of the Castlebellingham/Kilsaran area.

An enthusiastic GAA supporter and committee member of the O’Connell’s GFC, he recognises the role that sports clubs have in people’s physical and mental health and that empowering communities to work together will help effect change at a local level.

Sean A Brown Independent

Sean A Brown is returning to politics after a ten-year break. He has a great affinity with Ardee and is a huge supporter of many local businesses in the town. Two big issues on Sean’s agenda for Ardee are the ongoing traffic problems in the town and he will be in attendance for a major public meeting in Muldoons on Tuesday 4th of June at 8pm.

He also wants a total modernization of St Brigid’s Psychiatric unit in Ardee. He says that looking after mental health is crucial and we must have better conditions for patients.

He is also calling for a new garda station in Ardee and traffic lights at the junction of the Kingscourt Road and Ardee Main Street. Brown describes himself as a fighter and a leader for County Louth and he is asking the people of Ardee for their vote.

Fintan Malone Independent

I am standing in the elections to make politics relevant to local communities by having clinics available weekly in all areas.

I served on Ardee Town Council for 29 years until it was abolished in 2014 and since then I have continued to work with people and organisations to help them solve their problems in planning, housing and maintenance of local amenities.

I was the last to sign the nomination papers for the election on Saturday at 11.45, after being approached by members of the community. As a late entry I apologize to any household that I don’t get the opportunity to meet in person but I hope the merits of my work to date will stand to me on June 7th and will secure your no.1 vote!

Kitty Colbert

Sinn Fein

Kitty lives in Ardee with her husband and daughter. She is a former youth worker and is now training to be a psychotherapist. As a disabled person she appreciates the challenges faced by adults and children trying to access basic services and to advocate for appropriate healthcare.

She is a member of groups that advocate for housing including CATU Louth who fight for tenant’s rights. She has volunteered with SOSAD for 13 years and recently, having been appalled by the genocide in Palestine, has been organising vigils to raise awareness and solidarity.

Peter Farrell Independent

I have stepped into the political arena running as an independent candidate in the upcoming local elections 2024. My journey is all about bringing fresh ideas, genuine passion, and unwavering dedication to our local community with a solutions-based approach.

I am a native of Ardee, Co. Louth, where I have spent most of his life. As an independent candidate in the Mid Louth Local Elections, I am committed to bringing about positive change and representing the voices of the people of Mid-Louth with solutions, not with promises.

Tommy Commins Independent

Tommy Commins is a tree surgeon who is running as an independent. According to Tommy his main priorities if elected are housing, migration and restoring services to Louth Hospital. “I like to think I have a common sense approach when it comes to trying to improve our town. We are spending €100m on the Narrow Water Bridge which is ridiculous in my view. That money should be spent on improving services to Louth Hospital and making it easier for our young to get housing. We also have a huge issue with migration and we simply don’t have the infrastructure to cope with the numbers that are coming into the town. People are waiting for days to see their local doctor because the waiting rooms are full. Some parents have to send their kids to schools in a different town because the schools can’t cope with the numbers. We need to have a plan in place to limit the amount of people coming in. This can’t go on like this,” stated Tommy.

Amy wins opening Olympic qualifier bout for Team GB

DUNDALK boxer Amy Broadhurst has won her debut fight representing Great Britain after defeating Spain’s Sheila Martinez in her first bout of the Olympic qualifier in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Muirhevnamór southpaw who has won multiple national titles as well as European, Commonwealth and World titles, cruised through her opening fight and was awarded a unanimous 5-0 decision in the last-32 bout in the 60kg class.

She is due to fight either Canada’s Terris Smith or Bulgaria’s Aslahan Mehmedova in the next round which takes place today (Wednesday).

With three Paris Games spots available in her division, Broadhurst will need to reach the final in Thailand or win a box-off for third place to qualify for her first Olympics.

Earlier this year 27 year old Broadhurst decided to switch alle-

giances to Team GB after Ireland opted against selecting her for these qualifiers in Thailand. Her Dad Tony was born in England which meant she was eligible to compete for Team GB having done so previously at the 2022 Commonwealth Games when she won gold in the lightweight division. Amy’s natural weight for boxing is 60kgs but she was never going to get that spot on the Irish team for that weight as

Tokyo Olympics gold medal winner Kellie Harrington had already nailed down that place.

Determined to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming an Olympian, Amy campaigned at 66kg but her dreams were left in tatters when she was told that Grainne Walsh would be picked as the Irish representative at that weight class.

Shortly afterwards, Broadhurst released a statement saying she

was “heartbroken” at the IABA’s decision and was “exploring all options available to me to keep the Olympic dream alive.”

Last month, it was confirmed that Broadhurst had been selected by GB Boxing to box at 60kgs, the same weight category as Ireland’s Olympic champion Kellie Harrington.

Following her victory on Monday, Amy praised her new coaches for helping her get up and running in the tournament.

“I’m glad to get the first one out of the way,” Broadhurst told GB Boxing.

“It’s OK sparring and stuff but the nerves before a fight are completely different so it’s good to finally be back in there at my natural weight as well.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better bunch of people to be working with. They’ve been amazing to me,” stated Amy.

Lis na Dara residents take part in An Taisce spring clean

THE residents of Lis na Dara estate in Dundalk came together this weekend for An Taisce’s National Spring Clean, Ireland’s nationwide antilitter campaign. The event was organised by the residents’ association and saw volunteers come out in force to help clean up their estate.

The event was a great success with many residents taking part and helping to make their estate a cleaner and more pleasant place to live. The volunteers worked hard throughout the day and collected a large amount of rubbish and litter. Two new bee hotels were installed along with a pollinator area.

Speaking after the event, the committee said: “We are delighted with how the day went and would like to thank everyone who came out to help. It’s great to see so many people taking pride in their community and working together to make it a better place.”

The residents are planning more events like this in the future and hopes that even more people will get involved.

LOUTH Voluntary Branch of MSIreland is celebrating World MS Day May 30th. To mark World MS Day this year our annual Vintage Car Show will be held in the parish centre in Ardee on Saturday 1st June. The display of classic and vintage cars is a real treat for car enthusiasts and is a vital means of support for the Louth Voluntary Branch of MS Ireland.

include physiotherapy, mindfulness, and yoga. There are onine programs for newly diagnosed, and up to date medical interventions. We offer comprehensive information on financial supports and other services for people with disabilities.

One of the most important aspects of membership of the Louth branch of MS-Ireland is the peer support through our meetings and social gatherings.

HUNDREDS of attendees flocked to Dundalk Garden Centre on Saturday for the hugely successful “50th Anniversary Party” celebration.

The festive event commemorating half a century in business featured a delightful array of activities, demonstrations, market stalls, and fun for the whole family.

Particular highlights included a visit by our furry friends, Proudlock and Perky, alpacas from Long Acre Alpacas, captivating gardening demonstrations by renowned experts John McNamara of McNamara Nurseries and local landscaping guru Martin Muldoon, a live beehive and beekeeping demonstration by Edmond Kirwan of Drogheda Honey and a bustling pop-up marketplace.

Standout market vendors included Bellingham Blue Cheese with their wide cheese selection, McKeown’s Bakery serving up delicious glutenfree baked goods, The Birds & the Teas with chutneys and preserves, Barn with It showcasing handmade local crafts, Little Sprouts Garden Box with planting starter kits, and Lá Eile fuelling attendees with coffee, tea and mini pancake treats.

The successful event honoured the legacy of Dundalk Garden Centre, co-founded in 1974 by Robert and Margaret

Cox, both of whom are sadly no longer with us.

Margaret passed away following a battle with cancer in 1989 with Robert joining her in 2013, after which the centre passed to their daughters Jacqui Short and Nicola McCooey.

Inspired by their charitable nature, a hugely successful raffle for The Irish Cancer Society

was held, raising over €1,000 for the important cause.

“Our parents would be overjoyed to witness the community’s love for this place they started,” Nicola said.

“We’re committed to honouring their vision for years to come as Dundalk’s go-to gardening destination.

“With activities galore, from

kids’ seed planting to meeting the visiting alpacas, the Anniversary Party allowed Dundalk Garden Centre to give back to loyal customers.

“We were overwhelmed by the incredible turnout and support,” said Jacqui.

“Seeing so many smiling faces made this 50th celebration truly special.

Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan showcase their musical talents

THE students of Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan showcased their musical talents in the Holy Family Church on Monday 27th of May. The children from Rang 1 - Rang 6 performed for the pupils, parents and friends of the school to demonstrate what they’ve been learning through their music programme this year. From 1st class the children enjoy lessons on the feadóg stáin (tin whistle) with Múinteoir Pearse, and these lessons con-

tinue through to 6th class. The students in 4th, 5th and 6th are given the opportunity to choose a second instrument- cláirseach (harp), piobaí uilleann (uilleann pipes) or fidil (fiddle), taught by Deirdre Ní Bhuachalla, Joe Byrne and Barry Kieran respectively. The harp and pipe teachers are provided by Music Generation Louth, and this organisation also assists with the loan of harps

and the hire of uilleann pipes. The students and music teachers worked collaboratively to create this wonderful show celebrating Irish music, instruments and song. The school hopes to raise some money from this event to further fund their music programme. Aon áit a bhíonn ceol, bíonn craic and comhluadar!
