Champion Katie’s broad praise for Amy Tel: 042 932 0888. | Email: editorial@dundalkleader.com; advertising@dundalkleader.com
By Paul Byrne
KATIE Taylor cemented her reputation as one of, if not the greatest boxers this island has ever produced on Saturday evening as she defied the odds to gain revenge on Chantelle Cameron and become a two weight undisputed world champion. Shortly after her magnificent victory, Katie sat at the top table in the press conference and answered questions from the world’s media. The Bray boxer chose her biggest night to talk about her huge respect for local boxer Amy Broadhurst and assured all in the room that the Muirhevnamór southpaw is ‘going to be a world champion without a doubt’ “That’s what makes it worthwhile for me really,” explained Katie. “I saw Amy Broadhurst as well. She is an amazing champion herself and having a chance to inspire people like that, by inspiring girls like Amy Broadhurst. “I think I have done my job well so I’m happy. “She’s an amazing champion and I think she’s going to be an amazing pro as well by the way. From Page 1 “She’s going to be one for the future and I can’t wait to see her as a pro. She’s going to be a world champion without a doubt. “I’m just excited to see her career and the rest of the young girls that are coming up as well. It’s amazing.” Amy was at the 3 Arena on Saturday night
to witness Katie’s historic evening and the next morning she was contacted by the newly crowned two weight world champion and invited to call around to the mansion she has called home for the last couple of months as she prepared for the fight against Cameron. According to Amy’s father Tony, the Champ’s
words of support for his daughter showed what a great person Taylor is. “The press conference was just a couple of hours after the fight and this was probably the biggest night of her career. Yet despite all that Katie went out of her way to speak about Amy and say such lovely things about her. It just shows you what a nice person she is. My son Paul put on the TV just at the exact point Katie was talking about
Amy and he shared it around the whole family. I couldn’t believe how long she spoke about Amy for and how highly she spoke about her. Katie brought Amy over to the US for sparring ahead of her fight against Amanda Serrano at MSG. They’ve become good friends over the years which is crazy to Amy as she used to idolize Katie when she was growing up. “Myself and Amy were invited to Katie’s
house in Dublin which she has been using as her base preparing for this fight. The place is a mansion and has it’s own fully kitted out gym and it was amazing to go up there and spend time with Katie. She is so generous with her time and her coach Ross who is usually quite introvert and likes to keep himself to himself came down to us when he heard Amy was there. To have a legend of Irish boxing like Katie sup-
porting you is massive and it has given Amy so much confidence and inspiration. “She will turn professional at some point but for now her focus is on the Olympics next year and she has one Katie Taylor with Amy and Tony Broadhurst. last chance to qualify for Paris in February. St Vincent’s to explore possibility of changing to co-educational school By Tamara O’Connell
THE Board of Management of St Vincent’s Secondary School in Dundalk are conducting a review of their status as a single sex school. The Board is seeking the views of primary school parents on the current status of St Vincent’s as an all-girls secondary school. St Vincent’s Secondary School is also seeking views on the possibility of a change in status to co-educational. St Vincent’s Secondary School Principal, Fiona Butler, told the Dundalk Leader that the school had requests from prospective parents to consider the status of the school in terms of single sex or co-educational. “We began a consultation process towards the end of last year with staff and did a questionnaire
administered through the parents’ council for current parents,” said Principal Butler. “The next step was to conduct a parent survey of parents of primary school children in the wider community. There is no pre-determined outcome to this. Any decision on the school’s status will be decided by the Trustees CEIST. Essentially, we are just carrying out consultations.” She added: “We will be looking at the results of the surveys and they will go to the Board of Management and the Trustees CEIST and we will make the outcome of the surveys known.” The Board is currently in the process of conducting a digital survey of parents’ views on the subject of the potential change. The survey is being administered by the
Board of Management of St Vincent’s Secondary School in light of the Co Education Bill 2020. According to the St Vincent’s Board of Management, it is their objective to give unbiased consideration to the changing nature of education in societ

Maeve looking for support for her final ‘Sleepout for Simon’
Dundalk Leader 29th November 2023
LOCAL woman Maeve Curtis is planning to do her final sponsored sleepout this year for Dundalk Simon Community. The 2023 Simon Sleepout is due to take place in the town square on Friday, December 1 at 8pm. “This is the 11th year of the Dundalk Simon sponsored sleepout. We will be there from 8pm on Friday until 8pm on Saturday, December 2,” said Maeve. “It’s the same usual group doing it this year and we are asking other people to come and help out. “Even if people don’t want to do a sleepout, they can come and collect donations for an hour with buckets.” The Greenacres woman added: “The group is all getting older and some people aren’t able to do it this year. It would be great to have more support.
Maeve with her husband Terry who sadly passed away last year. “We did some fundraising in Marshes Shopping Centre recently, and raised over €1,100 for Dundalk Simon Community. “Over the past
11 years, the Simon Sleepout has raised over €140,000 from Dundalk and the surrounding areas.” She continued: “Sadly, my husband,
Terry, died last year. We founded the sleepout in the town. I did the sleepout last year in his memory. “I’m stepping back but I will still assist
with the sleepout in the years ahead but it’s time for younger people to take over. “Some local schools such as St Francis NS and Dundalk Grammar school are involved. I’m also grateful for all the donations from businesses.” Maeve concluded: “People can donate online, use a QR code or donate the old-fashioned way in a bucket. “I’m a very proud Dundalk woman and proud of all the people who have contributed. All of the money raised stays local. Even if people are struggling themselves, they are still very generous. “I’d like to thank my brother, Raymond Nordon, and Ted McArdle, for offering a loan of their camper vans this year so those sleeping out can use the toilet when the pubs close.”
Stephen and Mona bringing ‘Love Letters’ to the stage TWO friends from Dundalk are taking to the stage in The Spirit Store to perform ‘Love Letters’, an American play that features just two people. Mona Daly from Jocelyn Street and Stephen Burns from Oriel Terrace are teaming up yet again to act in the play written by AR Gurney. Love Letters is being performed in The Spirit Store on Wednesday, December 6 at 8pm. Tickets cost €12 and are available from The Spirit Store. “I did 15 plays and three musicals. I’ve been very lucky with the roles I’ve had over the years. Mona and I previously did ‘Private Lives’ together.” Mona added: “We went to the USA with
‘Private Lives’ and got awards for it. Stephen and I have collaborated on various projects together over the years. “Love Letters comes with a lot of very specific instructions in terms of the lighting, and how to show emotion and when to show no emotion. “The play is about two schoolmates who have a connection. My character is called Melissa and she’s from an unhappy family and is a bit of a rebel.” She said: “Stephen plays Andy who goes on to marry another woman but Melissa and Andy continue to share a connection over the years.” Tickets are available from The Spirit Store via www.spiritstore.ie and from Stephen Burn on 087-7972205 or email: sx.burns@gmail.com.

Louth County Council advancing series of major projects under the Capital Programme 2024-2026 Dundalk Leader 29th November 2023
6
LOUTH County Council are leading a number of major capital projects which are set to transform the county over the coming years. New housing schemes, road projects, and bridge construction and restoration works are in the pipeline alongside a series of urban regeneration initiatives in towns and villages across Louth, as part of the three-year Capital programme 2024-2026. At the monthly meeting of Louth County Council held on Monday, November 20th, Chief Executive Joan Martin presented
the Capital Programme to elected members for consideration, alongside the Draft Annual Budget 2024. The programme features a myriad of headline projects which will improve the lived experience of Louth residents, and ensure the county remains a premier destination for tourists and visitors. The provision of new housing remains central to Louth County Council’s ethos, and the Capital Programme 2024-2026 outlines the multi-million-euro investments that have been made in
both urban and rural residential projects, to provide homes for individuals and families on the council’s social housing waiting list. Louth County Council’s investment in a number of major road schemes throughout the county is key to opening up lands for new housing and infrastructure. In mid Louth, a series of regeneration projects are underway, including the Town Centre First schemes in Dunleer and Clogherhead. The flagship ‘Project Ardee
2040’ is set to bring regeneration to the heart of Ardee and build on existing projects that are in progress including Ardee Educate Together School, the N52 Ardee bypass and the re-development of Ardee Castle. One of the most significant urban redevelopment projects is the St. Nicholas Quarter and Backlands Regeneration Scheme in Dundalk. These works will regenerate and transform the historic St. Nicholas Quarter. building upon its rich history, heritage, and the natural quality of the local environment. In the north of the county, the Carlingford Regional Rural Development Fund (RRDF) project ‘Living in Carlingford, Visiting Carlingford’ will involve the complete regeneration of the coastal village. It will enhance the quality of the waterfront area and Market Square and the connecting streets, whilst improving connectivity and visual routes for pedestrians in the area with improved public spaces that can be used for a variety of events and activities.
Bridge St. is one of the areas which will be transformed. Work to regenerate the village of Omeath is also underway, with improvements to the public realm that will build on the huge tourist potential of the village with the Great Eastern Greenway bringing large numbers of visitors into the area every year. The RRDF project will enhance the experience of people visiting and living in Omeath, with the increased prioritisation of pedestrians and traffic calming measures, thus creating a more environmentally sustainable village. Plans to create a bridge for the future across Narrow Water at Carlingford Lough are also advancing, with Louth County Council a lead partner on this
historic cross border project that will directly link County Louth and County Down in Northern Ireland. Chief Executive of Louth County Council, Joan Martin welcomed the progress being made on the wide range of projects within the Capital Programme 2024-2026, saying: “Louth County Council has a very strong pipeline of projects underway which will not only improve the lives of people living here, but will future proof the infrastructure in towns and villages across Louth, making them more accessible and attractive places to visit, and encourage further economic investment in our county.”
North Louth flooding will cost up to €2m to fix states Watters
NORTH Louth Sinn Fein Councillor Antóin Watters has received an update on the extent of damage caused by the flooding around Halloween at this month’s council meeting. Cllr Watters stated that “The full extent of the damage is still being determined. I sought an update at this month’s Council meeting and received confirmation that 15 roads had ‘significant’ damage and flooding had occurred in 25 sites around the North Louth area.” Cllr Watters explained “The damage is horrendous with approximately 10km of road damaged. That equates to a cost of approximately €2 million to restore them.” The Council confirmed to Cllr Watters that talks regarding the funding of these works were ongoing with the Department of Transport. With the LIS Scheme due to

Antóin Watters. re-open shortly (Local Improvement Scheme covering works on private lanes) Cllr Watters asked that the council write to Minister Humphreys to propose an emergency fund for private lanes under the LIS Scheme. Cllr Watters believes “This is the only mechanism that will help to restore private lanes damaged during the
floods.” Asked on a timeline for the works, the council hope to work on the roads by the end of the year and future updates would be given. Cllr Watters welcomed this news but emphasised that “this is going to be the start of a long process to get the road network restored. I asked about the bridge network and rivers which were also affected and the Council have confirmed that consultants are being employed in the New Year to carry out a survey of the bridges throughout the north Louth area.” Concluding, Cllr Watters said: “We basically need the works to start as soon as possible and ensure the Council has the money to fund them to enable people to get back to their normal lives and access their homes and businesses sooner rather than later”.

Owen returns for 31st edition of his popular charity cabaret Dundalk Leader 29th November 2023
THIRTY-three years ago during the summer of 1990 wellknown local businessman and entertainer Owen Gray was asked to bring his hugely popular cabaret show to Greenore Golf Club for a fundraiser. The idea was to try and raise money for a new wheelchair accessible 25 seater Mercedes coach which would cost in the region of £45,000. The evening proved to be a huge success and thanks in part to Owen’s fundraising evening the bus was purchased shortly afterwards. The Owen Gray Christmas Cabaret show has since become
a hugely popular fixture on the Dundalk social calendar and having organised a very special 30th anniversary edition last year (having returned after a two year break due to the pandemic), Owen is bringing his hugely popular show back for outing number 31 in the Imperial Hotel in Dundalk on Friday 15th December. The non-profit show has been supporting both local and national charities since that first outing in Greenore in 1990. Since then countless charities have benefitted from Owen Gray’s annual Christmas Cabaret
Owen Gray. including St John of Gods, Drumcar, Dundalk Branch of the Wheelchair Association, National Council for the Blind, Dundalk Parents and Friends of Drumcar, Lourdes Invalid Fund, Order of Malta, St Vincent de Paul, People in Need,
sending aid to an orphan school in India as well as helping countless individuals over the years. Owen, who owns Goldstar Jewellers in the Demesne Shopping Centre, has been putting shows on around Dundalk and further
afield for many years and his cabaret show features some of the best talent around including comedians, singers and musicians. This year Owen will bring the brilliant US band to the stage as well as Irelands top Rockabily band The Moonrockers. The all live music show will also feature performances from the very talented Paudie Breen who will sing Songs of the Rat Pack and the very talented Jennifer Reynolds as well as Ireland’s King of Comedy Big O. All of this as well as a top class super hot buffer ensure it will be a night to remember in
the Imperial to kick off the Festive season. Owen will also be introducing the very talented teenager Molly Kenwright Maguire who he discovered at last year’s show. The talented Dundalk teenager will sing two songs at the event and continue Owen’s tradition of giving young local talent a chance to shine on the big stage. Former winners of the Owen Gray talent contest include well known local acts The Stormers, Paudie Breen, Jennifer Reynolds, Gavin Quigley and Dawn Martin from the O.G Talent Show went on to sing for Ireland in the Eu-
rovision Song Contest. “The people of Dundalk have always been very supportive of the Christmas Cabaret and thanks to their generosity we have managed to raise a lot of money for both local and national charities down through the years. We’ve had great fun doing this every year since 1990 and I am proud that we have always been a completely non-profit show with all monies donated to charity,” explained Owen. Tickets for this year’s Owen Gray Christmas Cabaret Dine and Dance cost €50 which includes a choice of two main
courses (generous portions). Pan fried Breast of Chicken or Beef Stir Fry. Served with a selection of seasonal vegetables, potatoes or French Fries followed by a delicious dessert and tea or cofee. Society of St. Vincent de Paul to launch annual appeal THE Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Dundalk will hold its annual appeal in the coming weeks. They will do so at all Masses in the area over the weekend, December, 2nd and 3rd, and while donations received inside and outside of churches contributed almost €80,000 last Christmas to our appeal, there are many other means by which support can be given to the Society through online, phone, post and our blue envelopes which are distributed. In total, we raised €205,851 last Christmas, all of which was greatly needed, in addition to the €173,606 distributed to families by way of vouchers and other supports last Christmas, the Society in Dundalk spent a further €300,000 throughout the year in helping those seeking our support. I took over as the Area President this year from Kevin Mulligan, who held the position for the past seven years. I have been truly amazed and humbled by the support that the Society receives from the people of this area. It is one of the most wellsupported areas in the country, and we are immensely grateful for it. We know that these are challenging times for many families and individuals because of soaring costs not of luxury items but the essentials of life, such as food, clothing, and particularly energy costs, electricity, gas, oil, and solid fuels. We have seen this in the number of requests the 11 conferences in the Dundalk area have received in the last year. They are up more than 20%, meaning that over 5,000 people in this area had to seek help from the Society in the last year. Thankfully, with your generosity, we were able to respond, but because of the increased cost of food in particular we have had to double the value of vouchers that we give to families. In addition to helping families through difficult times, in many cases through illness, unemployment, or the loss of a loved one. We believe that education is the best means by which families and

individuals can escape the poverty trap. Therefore, we give as much financial support as possible to schools, families, and individuals so that any child seeking help to achieve their ambition will not be denied that opportunity. St Vincent De Paul shop on Clanbrassil St. The charity will holdtheir annual appeal over the coming weeks. As I am new to this role, I feel it is important to express my gratitude towards the team of more than 80 volunteers working tirelessly in this area. I had the pleasure of attending several conferences in the last year and was impressed by our members’ dedication. Many of them have been serving for years, yet they continue to show great compassion towards the people they help. They give freely of their time to visit families and attend meetings, which is truly admirable, Volunteers like Richie and Bridie Mc Enteggart, a couple who served St. Malachy’s Conference for more years than many remember, and who for years at Christmas were the driving force behind our food bank. Richie and Bridie retired from their work with the Society this year, and I wish to acknowledge their contribution. I know that there are many calls on people these days seeking financial support, and who among us are not touched by the terrible suffering in Gaza, and that everyone has been impacted by the cost of living crisis. We ask that you give what you can, and we thank you sincerely for your support. Helen Grant, Dundalk Area President. Ways to donate: Online: svp.ie and nominate your local area; By phone: 0818 176 176 (ROI) or 028 9075 0161 (NI) and nominate your local area; By post: to SVP, PO Box 1234, Dublin 1, cheques made payable to ‘Society of St. Vincent de Paul’ or direct to a regional office, addresses can be found on www. svp.ie. CASTLETOWN Girls School celebrated antibullying week in their school recently with lots of events to promote the initiative. The school is a KiVa school which is an evidence based anti-bullying program which was developed in Finland and has been adopted in a number of countries. All teachers in the school are highly trained to deal effectively with bullying when it does occur. The message in the school is clear: bullying will not be tolerated. The children are motivated to help their classmates and peers and look out for each other instead of taking part in bullying. The school’s student council, which was re-
