Urgent and immediate action is needed to help families with the school transport “fiasco”, according to Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú, who says the problem is particularly acute in rural areas of Louth. The Sinn Féin TD says he has been contacted by dozens of parents who are “highly stressed and concerned” about the lack of school transport for their secondary school-going children.Andwhile there are problems every year with pockets of the school transport system, Deputy Ó Murchú says the start of the 2022 academic year is “off the scale bad”. School bus ‘fiasco’
When Des stepped down from the FAI he told them he didn’t want the usual retirement present but would like them to commission a trophy that could be awarded each season to the best goalkeeper in the League of Ireland. Des Casey was one of Ireland’s greatest ever football administrators, and he never forgot the time he spent between the posts on the pitches of Dundalk and the fact that the most important people in football are the players, especially the goalkeepers!
Dundalk Leader 31st August 20222
“To make matters worse, many of those who are being refused have used the scheme for years and this leaves their parents in a very difficult position, as they cannot do the school run due to work commitments and total ly depend on the school bus.“Families who ex pected to realise savings of €500 now look set, instead, to be heaped with additional costs as they try to find alterna tives.“It should have been a good news story, but instead it has turned into a huge nightmare.
Gerry McDermott, Des Casey and Packie Bonner. THERE’S a picture tak en almost 20 years ago, which has pride of place on the wall of my office and the story behind it sums up Des Casey. The picture was taken on the steps of the Football As sociation of Ireland’s former headquarters at 80 Merrion Square, Dublin, in front of the famous green door. I’m on the left; Des is in the middle and legen dary Ireland goalkeeper Packie Bonner is on the right. Des Casey ‘a man of integrity’
he and Dr Tony O’Neill of UCD had success fully introduced a rule whereby FAI officials had to step down from their positions at the age of 70. However, in order to get the motion through, it had been agreed that anybody elected prior to 1991 would not be affected by the new rule. Des Casey was a man of integrity as anybody who dealt with him in his various roles as a trade union official, rights commissioner, peace commissioner or football administrator could attest to. He could not have argued for a rule that people retire at 70 to make way for the younger generation coming through and then stay on because of a loophole.Although this was 2002, shortly after Saipan with the FAI and Irish soccer fractured, Des Casey wasn’t for budging. There were plenty of reasons to stay on, but Des Casey was a man of his word. He was also a man steeped in the game. He lived in the shadow of Oriel Park, which before it became the home of Dundalk Football Club, was Casey’s Field. He played in the Mi nor League –the fore runner of the School

From Page 1 He said “record num bers” of students have been refused a seat on school buses in places like Annagassan, Kil saran and Castlebelling ham. He said the time has come for the Minister for Education Norma Foley to “urgently inter vene” and to work with Transport Minister Ea mon Ryan to “expand capacity by doing what ever needs to be done like providing more services and looking at the criteria for tickets”. It is, he said, “also an environmental issue because of the need to take as many cars off the school run as pos sible”.Deputy Ó Murchú said the blame for the crisis is “squarely at the door of the govern ment”.Hesaid: “The gov ernment has failed to expand the school transport scheme, while eliminating fares and this is causing huge problems for families in Louth.“The removal of fares has resulted in unprec edented numbers ap plying for the scheme, but because of the strict criteria in place, thou sands of children who are categorised as ‘con cessionary’ will now be refused a seat.
Louth Councillor Pearse McGeough said: “I have been inundated with people asking me how do we get around it. They need to get place on the bus for their“Parentschildren.have to buy uniforms and books and now they have this to worry about too. It’s an awful situation for the parents and children. “There is very little money about at the mo ment due to the cost-ofliving crisis and this is an added pressure for parents.”Headded: “This is coming at a time when parents don’t need ad ditional stress. THE 10th annual Cross Cooley Challenge in aid of the Maria Goretti Foundation and North Louth Hospice is due to take place on Satur day, October 1. According to Cross Cooley Challenge fun draiser, Errol Boyle from Dundalk, the North Louth Hospice provides “great service and comfort in difficult and sensitive circum stances”.“Similarly, the Maria Goretti Foundation provides respite for the parents of children who need 24/7 care in our area,” he said. “This is a local event for local charities op erating in our com munity. Elderly people feeling vulnerable in Ardee townland
and Junior Achievement Ireland
Louth
VOLUNTEERS from Louth County Council and Junior Achievement Ireland (JAI), have once again joined together to inspire over 200 students in 7 schools across the region to reach their po tential, through a series of interactive programmes. The partnership, now in its 19th year, aims to em power students to shape their own future through a positive role model from the world of work. In the past academic year, volunteers from the Local Authority have im plemented the programme in 3 primary schools, namely: St Pauls S.N.S Drogheda, Ardaghy N.S and Knockbridge N.S. At this level, these hands-on learning workshops teach children how they can impact the world around them as individuals, work ers and consumers. The programme con tinues right through to secondary school, pre paring students for their future careers through entrepreneurship, employ ability, financial literacy and STEM programmes.
Cllr McGeough also advised “you can look at modernising the methods of com munication within the community and use resources like myself, funding sources and the Gardaí to help make your area safer.” Also in attendance was ruairí Ó Murchú tD who spoke about Garda resources and encouraged the mem bers to reach out and connect with other similar groups. he also advised that Gardaí are only too happy to attend meetings of Community Alert Groups to help and advise in any way they can.

A DISPATCH operator for a local taxi firm says changes in regulations that are due to come into force will not encourage more drivers to work in Dundalk at night.

There are always fights on the “Youngstreets.people nowa days don’t want to be driving taxis at night. They want to have so cial lives themselves.”

‘new regulations won’t help dire taxi situation’ creases for peak demand hours and distances at night will incentivise more drivers to service the night time economy. “I think during Cov id-19, many drivers got into a routine of com ing in during the day and they are reluctant to drive at night now,” said Paul.“I remember when I started working in this business there were around 40 cars and now that’s down to 12 or 14. “Saturday night is the biggest money-making night and we find it very hard to get drivers on a Saturday night.”
Dispatch operator, Paul, from Fives Dun dalk Cabs told the Dun dalk Leader that “the new regulations won’t make any difference” to the taxi crisis currently facing the town. Under new legislation due to come into effect from Thursday, Septem ber 1, all taxis will have to accept card payments fromTaxipassengers.fareswill also in crease by 12 per cent, on average, from the same date. The price increase will be weighted across time bands throughout the day and will also take into account the distance of the fare.

INCLUSION Louth cel ebrated their 50th anni versary with a very suc cessful Family Fun Day in Oriel Park on Sunday afternoon.Inclusion Louth (formerly known as Dundalk Parents and Friends of the Intellec tually Disabled) invited 300 people to gather in Oriel Park which was sponsored by PayPal. The group which was formed in 1972 have been a huge asset to the local community sup porting families who have children with in tellectual disabilities and providing parents with support and advice as well as lobbying the government for much needed support serv ices.Eoghan Bailey, the chairman of Inclusion Louth, hailed the Fam ily Fun Day as a great success and thanked Dundalk FC, PayPal and everybody who donated to the event. “It was a great suc cess and we have re ceived nothing but needed support and ad vice to each other. We are essentially a parent support group and we are here for any families who want to come to us and ask for advice or help. A lot of younger families espe cially don’t know where to turn for help and we like to think we can be there to help and guide them. The Family Fun Day in Oriel Park was a great chance for parents to get talking to each other in a friendly fun atmos phere and you could tell from the faces of people when they were leaving how much they enjoyed the day. The only thing missing was the weather but it wasn’t too bad,” stated“WeEoghan.would encour age any parents with children to get in touch with us and get involved in Inclusion Louth. We have a facebook page where you can contact us or you can email any questions to concludedsionlouth@gmail.com,”incluEoghan.

Dr Kenneth Beatty, Public Health Doctor, HSE Public Health Area A, said; “Ensuring your child is up-to-date with their vaccines is important to protect your child and those around them from these highly contagious infectious diseas es.”Dr Beatty added: “If you are unsure of your child’s vaccine record, contact your local health office. HSE Public Health Area A (Cavan, Louth, Meath, Mona ghan & North Dublin) are re minding parents and guardians to ensure their child’s routine vaccinations are up to date, in cluding the Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR) vaccines. The most recent data from the Health Protection Surveil lance Centre shows a worrying drop in the uptake of childhood vaccines in 2 year olds. By the time children reach their sec ond birthday they should have completed their Primary Child hood Immunisation Schedule, including 1st dose of MMR vaccine. A decrease was seen across all childhood vaccines in Ireland, with the percentage of 2 year olds who received one dose of MMR vaccine falling below 90%. Prior to the pan demic period, uptake rates had not dropped below 90% since 2010.In Area A (Cavan, Louth, Meath, Monaghan and North Dublin), the uptake is even lower than the national rate and significantly lower than the 95% target, which means that many children are not protected from these highly contagious and potentially very dangerous diseases.InLouth, approximately 1 in 6 two-year olds are unvaccinat ed against measles. In Meath, approximately 1 in 8 two year olds are unvacci nated against measles. In Cavan/Monaghan, approx imately 1 in 8 two year olds are unvaccinated against measles, andIn North Dublin, approxi mately 1 in 8 two year olds are unvaccinated against measles. Measles is an acute, highly contagious infectious disease that can lead to serious compli cations such as ear infections, pneumonia, and inflammation of the brain and even death. Young children especially those aged under 5 and individuals with underlying immune condi tions are particularly at risk. Al though it is usually considered a childhood disease, it can be contracted at any age. Dr Lois O’Connor, Public Health Doctor, HSE Public Health Area A, is urging par ents and guardians to make sure their child gets their childhood vaccinations. She said: “Chil dren who have missed their recommended childhood vacci nations during the pandemic are at risk of catching measles. The MMR vaccines can be given at any age, if missed out during infancy.”
“The MMR vaccine is in cluded in the national childhood immunisation programme, and is a safe and effective vaccine against measles, mumps and ru bella infections. To ensure full protection, two doses are ad ministered to babies and young children with the first dose at 12 months from your practice nurse or GP and the second dose when your child is in junior in fants as part of the HSE school vaccination programme.”

A ‘MUCH NEEDED’ day care service for older people in Dundalk is to re-open next month, more than two years after it shut, Sinn Féin TD Ru airí Ó Murchú has said. The Dundalk TD said he has received communication from the HSE this week that the St Anne’s Day Service, which is run from St Oliver’s Commu nity Hospital, is to commence on September 19. Deputy Ó Murchú had writ ten to the HSE earlier this month after those who work with older people in Dundalk had voiced to him concerns that the date for the service opening, which was meant to be this month, had not been revealed.Theday care service was closed because of Covid 19 re strictions in 2020, but has not yet re-opened. In correspond ence earlier this year, the HSE advised Deputy Ó Murchú that they were looking to reopen it this month, but this has not happened. However, in a letter to the TD, the HSE said the service would commence on a one day a week basis from September 19, with an initial intake of 16 people. The HSE said it hopes to increase the numbers using the service on a gradual basis over the coming weeks and months, as demand for it is assessed. The Sinn Féin TD welcomed the news, saying it was ‘a re lief to finally have a start date for this much-needed service’. He said: ‘I welcome the commitment and hard work it has taken from St Oliver’s Community Hospital to get this service up and running again.‘There is no doubt that there will be a high demand for it and, while it is only opening for one day a week initially, I wish to see it quickly ramping up to meet the needs of older people and their families in our community’.

HIGH parking costs for rail commuters should be reduced in line with new lower public transport fares, according to a Fine Gael Senator.Senator John McGahon, Fine Gael Spokesperson on Climate, Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, raised the costof-living crisis faced by commuters in the Seanad last month. Senator McGahon said: “Lower parking costs for rail com muters would encourage even more people to take trains, which would be beneficial from both a climate and cost of living per spective.“The20% reduction of public transport prices has helped alle viate the financial pressure facing households, particularly young people. Encouraging the use of public transport also helps us to achieve our emissions targets as we tackle climate change.
