Dundalk set to sparkle for the Night of Lights By Niamh Kirk
DUNDALK is set to come alive in spectacular fashion on Friday night as the town centre will be buzzing with arts, songs, street performers and much more during the Festival of Light and Culture. In what promises to be a huge community event, you will scarcely be able to turn a corner in Dundalk this Friday without being delighted and dazzled by some of the best of the creative and cultural industries the area have to offer. The myriad of festivities kicks off on Friday afternoon where there will be craft fairs, fun fairs, face painting and music throughout the town centre. However, it’s when the sun goes down that things will
really brighten up. Starting at the Longwalk at 6.30pm, a procession of lanterns will illuminate the streets of Dundalk as community groups, schools, choirs, dance groups and sports clubs are led by the Tain Chariot and the Cooley Warriors in what promises to be a spectacular and heart warming sight. The crowds gathered along the dark street on a cold evening should make the contrast with the warm lights and a winter’s night all the more sublime. School children throughout Dundalk were excitedly putting the finishing touches to their lanterns this week in preparation for the display., as have those who attended the lantern making workshops in the lead up to the big night. Louth votes yes in Children’s Referendum By Niamh Kirk
Louth voted to approve the Children’s Referendum this weekend with 53% of those who went to the polls voting ‘yes’. Despite the lack of a party backed ‘No’ campaign, 46.9% of people voted against the proposed amendments to the constitution. There was as little as 2000 vote in the difference in Louth as 17,453 voted in favour of the changes while 15,423 voted against. In terms of overall turn out Louth was mid table 32.45 % with only 33,000 of the 102,000 electorate voting on Saturday. The referendum was a trial run for
Saturday but resulted in one of the lowest turnout in Irish voting history at about 33% . However it is unclear if the low voting numbers was caused by the choice of day or lack of engagement in the referendum. Controversy over last week’s Supreme Court Ruling on the Government’s information campaign in the lead up to the referendum rumbles on. Campaigners on the’ No’ side have called for Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald to resign following the decision that found the spending of public money on a campaign where too much of the information was geared
toward encouraging a positive result. Despite the low turnout voting there was positive news as Louth was among the counties to see the largest increases in young voter registration with more than 3,380 more registered to vote since May. Co Louth was second only to Galway who had the largest increase. National Youth Council Ireland under took on an extensive voter registration campaign before the weekend’s referendum in Co Louth. It is thought that the student population and efforts made by the local authorities helped contribute to the increase in numbers.

ain. Acting for the defendant, who had spent three weeks in custody, Dermot Lavery stated that Mr Haughton’s parents had forwarded funds to allow their son return to England. He added Haughton had suffered considerably as a result of the offence. “My client accepts that the law has been broken and that
he has suffered a very hard penalty. He has been in custody for three weeks, lost a good job and is going to be without his family. “There is nothing to keep him in this jurisdiction and he wants to go back to make what he can of his life. He has to face the police in Britain and presume that they will prosecute him there”, added Mr Lavery.
Inspector Martin Beggy had no objection to the defendant being allowed to return to Britain and said that Gardai would assist him getting to Dublin in order to travel home. In imposing the sentence, Judge Flann Brennan stated that while the defendant had suffered, he was the author of his own misfortune in committing a serious offence.

Soccer club didn’t know about motion 6
Dundalk Leader 14th November 2012
MORGAN ACCUSED OF ‘MISCHIEF’ LOCAL SOCCER club Quay Celtic had not been consulted by Cllr Oliver Morgan, pictured, before he tabled a motion calling on Dundalk Town Council to engage in talks with McCaughey Developments Ltd with a view to acquiring 10.86 acres of land to facilitate the club in ‘reacquiring its homebase pitch’, it emerged at last week’s meeting of the council. Chairperson Cllr Jennifer Green said she, like other members of the council, had been contacted by Quay Celtic who had no idea that the motion was being put on the agenda and wanted nothing to do with it. She asked Cllr Morgan if it was not the case that they had not approached him and he agreed that they hadn’t. Cllr Maria Doyle said she too had spoken to the club chairman and he didn’t know the matter was going to be raised. She wanted Cllr Morgan to explain the
history behind his motion. ‘Who is really behind it?’ asked Cllr Sean Bellew. ‘It’s not Quay Celtic’. He asked why would a local league club need 10.86 acres which is two thirds the size of Lansdowne Road and which could hold 10 regular pitches. There was no valuation of the land yet Cllr Morgan was proposing that the council give it to the club on a 99 year lease for €1 per year. The motion, he argued was ‘nothing short of mischief making on behalf of the proposer’. Cllr Jim Ryan called on Cllr Morgan to withdraw his motion in light of the information which had come out at the meeting. ‘I am reluctant to withdraw the motion,’ said Cllr Morgan adding that he didn’t see why he should withdraw it. The motion was then defeated by ten votes to two on a show of hands.

Woman didn’t realise she was assaulting Garda
Evening of infectious rhythms and soulful music
COME TO LEARN SONGS FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AND DISCOVER DIFFERENT HARMONIES.
A mother of three who had been drinking at a late night party was arrested after pulling a Garda to the ground by the hair. Susan McAreavey of 3 Gort Nua, Station Road, Castlebellingham, claimed that she did not know the person who had approached her was a Garda and she was in fear after being the victim of an assault earlier
that night. Dundalk District Court heard that at 5.15am on October 18, 2009, a crowd of over 50 people had gathered at Slieve Foy Park, Dundalk, following a party. After fights broke out, Gardai were called and attempted to disperse the crowd. The defendant refused to leave and then became involved in an altercation with another
woman. When the female Garda tried to intervene she was pulled to the ground by the hair and it took two colleagues to free her. Ms McAreavey, who was very drunk, was taken to Dundalk Garda Station where she was obstructive and abusive. The defence solicitor, stated that her client had been attacked twice and feared she was being assaulted again. She would
not have fought back if she realised it was a Garda that had approached her. Her claim that the Garda was not wearing the usual uniform was denied by Inspector Beggy. Judge Flann Brennan remanded the case to January 9 pending a Probation Report on the defendant who appeared on three public order and one assault charge.

Nessa Childers MEP
LETTER FROM EUROPE
I
hope you enjoy my newsletter from Europe, a snapshot of my work carried out on your behalf in the European Parliament. My main focus has been and will continue to be on important public health matters. However, this year and early next year the EU will concentrate on the next EU budget. I am working to protect a strong budget, in particular for mental health, arts culture & heritage, education, youth employment and rural development.
FIGHTING TO PROTECT EU FUNDING FOR CULTURE, ARTS, EDUCATION AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT
TAX THE CASINO CAPITALISTS
HORIZON 2020 – NEW EU INNOVIATON FUNDd
The role of the financial sector in the collapse of our economy is no secret. Yet its leaders evade sanction and even walk away with multi-million euro bonuses. Now - after much pressure from MEPs - a very modest tax has been proposed on this same sector - but many member states refuse to support it. Including our own government! Imagine the difference an extra €500 million revenue from this 0.1% tax would make to the health services in Ireland. That’s what is at stake here. I need your help to change the government’s mind. Please phone or email me to find out how you can help my campaign.’
As well as working on the Environment and Public Health Committee, I also sit on the Culture and Education committee which is responsible for significant funding programmes including Culture, Erasmus and Citizens for Europe. I am also part of the negotiations to include culture research funding in the major EU Horizon 2020 programme. This programme will provide substantial financial support for research and innovation up to 2020.
IS YOUR TOWN TWINNING ASSOCIATION INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT EU FUNDING? Town twinning associations, community groups and local authorities will be interested in the EU funding programme Europe for Citizens. This year three Irish Town Twinning applications were successful in drawing down EU funding - Wicklow Town Council were awarded €11,000, Fermoy Twinning Association €7,000 and Oranmore Community Development Association Limited €5,000. The inspiration behind this programme is to encourage debate about citizenship and identity across Europe. The Europe for Citizens programme funds a wide range of projects, including twinning, to bring people together from local communities and wider society to share and exchange experiences and opinions about Europe.
LEARN ABOUT EU CULTURE FUNDING For the 2014-2020 funding period the European Commission is proposing a budget of 1.8 billion – of which 900 million will be for the cinema and audio visual sector, and 500 million for culture. Culture is a major source of jobs, therefore the contribution to employment, to innovation and equality across all sections of society will underpin the funding guidelines for 2014-2020. As soon as we have final agreement on the funding available, and the criteria, I will organise information events across Leinster.

A PROVEN INDEPENDENT VOICE FOR LEINSTER Since being elected in 2009, Nessa Childers has been an independent voice for the people of Leinster. She has always worked on behalf of citizens, focusing on their concerns and not been afraid to speak up for more integrity and transparency in political life.
What others say about Nessa: ”….She has worked tirelessly in public health for both the mental health interest group and the MEPs against cancer group. Her commitment to ensuring mental health – and the many issues it encompasses, such as stigma and social exclusion – is always high on the EU political agenda is highly commended, especially during the economic crisis and the exacerbating effect this can have on mental health issues.”

Pinocchio set for Town Hall stage By Paul Byrne The talented people in RehabCare in Dundalk are taking to the stage again this December to perform their brand new production of the well loved story of ‘Pinocchio’. With a cast of over 40 people the production will take place in Dundalk’s Town Hall between Tuesday December 4 and Friday 7 of December with tickets costing €10 and €5. All the proceeds from the show will go to RehabCare and Crumlin children’s hospital and Paudie Murphy, a programme facilitator in RehabCare hopes people will come along and enjoy the show. “We’ve been working hard with this production since back in June and everybody is more or less ready now for the shows coming up in December. We have a cast of over forty people
who have mild disabilities and the entire concept and the script were developed by them all” explained Paudie. “We’ve kind of put our own unique spin on the story of Pinocchio and hopefully everybody who comes to see it will enjoy it as much as the cast enjoy performing it. We’d also like to say a big thank you to the Clan Na Gael GAA Club for giving us a room for rehearsals over the past few months.” added Paudie. “Proceeds from the show will be split between RehabCare and Crumlin Hospital so your ticket money will be helping improve the lives of boys and girls all over the country”. Tickets are available from the Dundalk Town Hall Box Office now. For further information call directly to the Box Office at 0429392919 or call Sandy in RehabCare at 0429328766.

St Vincents students talk the talk By Niamh Kirk
Young women used to be told to be seen and not heard. Clearly Annabelle Morris TY must have missed this advice as she used her public speaking skills to rebuke George Bernard Shaw’s famed assertion that “youth is wasted on the young.” Annabelle was among 17 debaters from all over Louth but all three winners on the night are students of St Vincent’s School. Aoife McMenamin and Eleanor Lawlor took second and third place respectively in the debate. Victoria O’Hagan their debating teacher expressed her happiness with the result. “The

school is very proud of this achievement and we look forward to support them in their future debating endeavours.” Chairing the event was Nessa Childers MEP who presented Annabelle with the top prize of an iPad and a trip to Brussels. Annabelle will now go on to speak in the national finals which takes place at Farmleigh House, Dublin, Novem-
ber 20. There she will have the opportunity to win a prize of €1,000. Sheila Tierney, Manager of Europe Direct at the County Library in Dundalk said she was impressed with the standard of debating amongst all the entrants. “It was by no means an easy competition to win. Standards were extremely high and we were all impressed by the
arguments put for and against the theme ‘Youth is wasted on the young’. “It was a well chosen topic and who better to debate it than our youth. All our debaters had firm ideas in their minds and put them forward extremely well. They should all be congratulated for taking on the challenge of entering the Soapbox competition”, she stated.

With the new year dawning Dundalk will not have to wait long to host it’s first major sporting event of the year. On January 13 Cuchulainn Cycling Club will be hosting the National Cyclocross Championships. Cyclocross is a winter sport that originated in Europe as a way for the road riders to keep fit in the off season. The races are short, 60mins, multi lap affairs, held over a mixture of gravel, grass, road and include multiple obstacles that force riders to dismount and carry their bikes. Race director Myles McCorry has designed a course at Muirhevnamor Park, that will include fast track sections along with technical obstacles. The Cyclocross season is cur-
rently in full swing in Ireland. The country has two main leagues, an Ulster based league and the Fixx Cross League based in Dublin.
Cuchulainn Cross veteran, Johnny McCabe, is currently near the top of the leader board in both leagues.
A Dundalk man who was discovered by Gardai attempting to remove items from an ESB power station had the case against him adjourned until January 16 pending a Probation Report. Bernard Joyce of 5 Aghameen Park, Muirhevnamor, and an-
other man were seen at the power station in Ballykelly but after being discovered, dumped power tools and fled. They were later arrested and the property valued at €2,400 was recovered. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his 36-year-old client
was on the periphery of this offence and was in the company of a man better known to the court. Judge Flann Brennan asked for a Probation Report and stated that he would consider 100 hours Community Service in lieu of four months in prison.

Colleagues compete to be Movember’s best By Niamh Kirk
It begins with a few indistinct hairs and a bit of fluff here and there, but by the end of ‘Movember’ there is sure to be some spectacular facial fashion in Heinz as a group of men sculpt
their ‘Mo’ over the coming weeks. Twenty-two members of staff in Heinz are growing their own style of moustache in aid of Movember and the internal competition for ‘Best Styled Moustache’ should encourage some artistic
offering from the lads before the end of the month. To bid a bitter sweet goodbye to their ‘Mo’ the group have planned a charity shave off in the Jockey’s Bar onNovember 30. The ‘Shaving mos to help save bros’ night kicks
off at 8pm and the participants will be cleanshaven before long. To sponsor the team, visit the Movember. com website and donate to Dundalk Heinz. The team are keeping
a photo diary of their moustache madness. Movember, the annual campaign to raise awareness about prostate and other male cancer initiatives, is now in its tenth year and con-
tinues to ‘change the face of men’s health.’ The Movember Foundation recently entered
the Global Journal’s Top 100 NGOs (non government organisations) in the world for
its efforts in encouraging the early detection, diagnoses and treatment of cancer.

Wtedy to nastąpił I rozbiór Polski. Dokonały go Rosja, Austria i Prusy. Jeszcze dwukrotnie zaborcy dzielili nasz kraj. W 1795 roku, po III rozbiorze, Polski nie było już na mapach. Naród polski jednak istniał i walczył o wolność. W 1831 roku wybucha Powstanie Listopadowe, a w 1863 - Powstanie Styczniowe. Wybuch I wojny światowej w 1914 roku wzbudził w Polakach nadzieję. Wydarzenie to upamiętnia przekazanie władzy Marszałkowi Józefowi Piłsudskiemu. Został on Naczeln Dowódcą Wojsk Polskich. Z Krolestwa Polskiego zaczęły wycofywać się wojska niemieckie. Dzień póżniej zaczęto tworzyć rząd. Początkowo rocznicę niepodległościową świętowano 7 XI . Dopiero 23 IV 1937 roku uchwalono, że 11 Listopoada będzie świętem państwowym. Do 1939 roku uroczystości obchodzone były dwukrotnie.
New centre will help spark Dundalk’s creative side By Niamh Kirk
Dundalk’s affinity with the craft industry received a much welcomed boost with the official opening of the Creative Spark, Louth’s Creative Community hub last week. The project is an initiative born from Louth Craftmark whose purpose is to support and promote the craft industries in the north east. The Creative Spark is a purpose built, state of the art facility that combines spaces for training in creative arts and also workshop spaces for businesses. Dundalk Town Council Chairperson Jennifer Green was present to launch the unique project which was attended by Louth County officials, the projects major funders, and local artists as well as creative entrepreneurs. For Sarah Daly,
Cllr. Jennifer Green, Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Town Council who officially opened Creative Spark, Louth Creative Community Hub, Clontygora, Muirhevnamor, watched by Breandan O Caollai (left), Joint Director General, International Fund For Ireland; Paschal McGuire, Director Border Region Enterprise Ireland; Ronan Dennedy, Chief Executive Louth County Enterprise Board and Sarah Daly, Manager of Louth Craftmark
manager of both Louth Craftmark and the Creative Spark, the opening was a great day. “Creative Spark has the potential to provide a broad range of social benefits including opportunities to improve core skills, aid learning processes, raise confidence and self-esteem, promote community cohesiveness and identity, increase inclusiveness, and deliver economic
value,” she said. Sarah and her colleagues in the hub know that the creative industries have the potential to make a positive impact on local economies. Both directly, by generating productivity and employment and indirectly by stimulating the visitor economy and generating ‘spill over’ of ideas and knowledge. Creative industries can
also have a beneficial impact upon skills, place-making and regeneration. “We are delighted that our supporters and funders have recognised the value of what we are trying to achieve with the new centre. “We hope to improve the attraction of Dundalk and County Louth to retain graduates and encourage inward migration, particularly
those seeking to run small, high value enterprises and to provide practical opportunities for those already unemployed or threatened with unemployment within the creative industries sector. “With our Community Relations Programme we aim to use creative practice and methodologies as a means to create social engagement”, she added.

Busy weekend ahead at Ardee Baroque With just a few days to go before the start of the performances, anticipation is rising ahead of a packed weekend of music, workshops and lectures. The Irish Baroque Orchestra (IBO) have settled into Ardee, and are rehearsing at Scoil Mhuire na Trócaire before their two concerts on Friday and Sunday. They have performed at each of the four schools in the town, giving the students an opportunity to hear and see the music and instruments which make that distinctive Baroque sound. They have also played at Moorehall
Lodge, an annual event which is enjoyed greatly by all the residents. This year, the two IBO concerts will focus on the great German composer, Johann Sebastian Bach, and in particular his concerti. Directly after the concert on Friday, there will be a wine reception at the Ferdia Arms, where concert-goers will receive a complementary glass of wine upon showing their ticket. Another great German composer, George Frederich Handel, will figure prominently in the concert on Saturday night. Join-
ing soprano Deirdre Moynihan will be some of Ireland’s finest Early Music artists on recorders, harpsichord and viol. Guitar recitals are always popular, and on Saturday afternoon, Eamon Sweeney will perform a programme of music which would have been heard in the royal courts of Europe in the late 1600s. And just when a break from all this music is needed, a lecture on an all-but-forgotten Louth man by Ardee Baroque Chair, John Rountree will take place on Sunday in Smarmore Castle on the life of Vere Foster.
DkIT celebrate inaugural Trad Week The Section of Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology will host a series of Irish traditional music events this November as part of their inaugural Trad Week. Featuring prominently
will be the ‘Cosgrove fiddle’, on which the famous Sligo/American fiddle player Michael Coleman recorded some of his best known music. This fiddle is on loan to the Institute for this semester. The In-
stitute will also team up with ICTM Ireland and the Oriel Centre at Dundalk Gaol to host students from other third level institutions for a series of workshops on performance in Irish traditional

music entitled ‘Notes on Notes’. The Section of Music is home to the Ceol Oirghialla Traditional Ensemble, a group of over fifty musicians, singers and dancers drawn from the DkIT community who perform at a variety of events during the year. Their concert on Thursday November 22 will focus on the music of Sligo born fiddle players Michael Coleman and John Joe Gardiner. Events will start with a session in Dundalk on Tuesday at 9.30pm. On Wednesday, students from the Institute will interact with students in schools in Drogheda to improve awareness of local Irish traditional music. The Thursday Masterclass at the Institute will be facilitated by renowned fiddle player John Carty followed by a concert in the MacAnna Theatre featuring Ceol Oirghialla. On Saturday, students from around the country will converge on Dundalk for a series of workshops with experienced facilitators and producers in association with ICTM Ireland. introducing the All New Renault Clio For Ireland, 1990 was one of our most memorable years. It was the year that Jack Charlton took us to Italia ‘90 and Ireland took on the rest the world. It was even dubbed our Summer of Love! 1990 was also a big year for Renault. It was the year it launched Clio, which became one of the best loved and best selling cars. Over 12 million Clios were sold and for Renault it was a love story that had only just begun. Twenty two years later and now in its fourth generation, New Clio is a stunner, a car that will cause quite a stir when it hits Irish roads in January 2013. Clio boasts an all new sensual look and Renault has capitalised on the model’s hallmark strengths and everyday versatility to deliver a car
that seeks to win over customers thanks to its attractiveness and key selling points. New Renault Clio champions Renault’s new design identity which places the emphasis on simplicity, warmth and sensuality. Designed by the same team as Renault’s concept car DeZir, new
Clio’s sleek exterior look is certainly a head turner. Following its eagerlyanticipated world debut at the Paris Motor Show, Renault Ireland has today confirmed pricing and specification for one of Ireland’s best loved cars. Combined with attractive pricing, new
technology, a wide array of new options and stateof-the-art engines, the French brand is aiming for the top of the hotly contested supermini class. Breaking with tradition, new Clio will be available solely in five-door guise, but with a coupé-like silhouette incorporating hidden
rear door handles and a sportier profile. To back up its contemporary look, Ireland’s Expression model will also be priced to tackle its rivals head on, including an eyecatching entry price of €14,990 or €149 per month from Renault Finance. Kicking off the Clio
line-up is a new Expression trim level, available with the 1.2 16V 75 bhp engine. Far from being a stripped-out base version though, and in keeping with Renault’s reputation for providing well-equipped models versus the competition, it benefits from a 4x20W radio with Bluetooth and USB connection, Bass Reflex system (enhanced speaker sound quality), driver/ passenger/ front side airbags, 60/40 splitfolding rear seat, daytime running lights, ESC, Hill Start Assist, height and reach adjustable steering wheel, electric front windows and door mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, plus cruise control and speed limiter. Road tax for the 1.2 engine is just €225 per annum. To combine low fuel consumption and driving
enjoyment, the New Renault Clio line-up features an extensively renewed range of petrol and diesel engines. The new Energy TCe 90 petrol engine is the first three-cyclinder engine to be produced by Renault and combines particularly low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions with punchy response. The latest-generation Energy dCi diesel engines have also been extensively revised and the introduction of a new 90-horsepower version of the Energy dCi is equipped with Stop&Start technology. Emitting only 83g/km, this diesel engine is the most economical in its class with the lowest CO2 emissions and only €160 annual road tax. New Clio boasts a spacious and comfortable interior, with large and practical boot (300 litres). It is also rigorously
designed, achieving the highest possible level of active and passive safety (5 stars Euro NCAP new rating, best in class in three out of four categories) and is built to Renault’s exacting quality standards. In terms of safety, Renault committed to achieving very high standards of active and passive safety when designing New Clio. Today, EuroNCAP ratings are based on four chief criteria, namely adult, child and pedestrian protection, plus driver aids. Another development means that vehicles are now assessed on the basis of their entrylevel versions (i.e. the least well-equipped in terms of standard safety features). Based on the new evaluation procedure, New Clio achieved a maximum EuroNCAP rating of five stars.
