School and sheep shearer celebrate All-Ireland wins By Paul Byrne
LOUTH is celebrating a unique All-Ireland double after a weekend that saw two national titles brought home to the Wee County. Monastery National School in Ardee got the ball rolling at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin as they became Aviva Health FAI All Ireland 5 A Side Soccer Champions and there was double joy for Louth as just hours later Ravensdale man Mark McGeown fought off competitors from all over the country to become the All Ireland Senior Sheep Shearer Champion in Millstreet Co. Cork. Monastery National School had earned the right to play in these finals by becoming Louth, North Leinster and Leinster Champions. They competed against the Summerhill NS, Athlone (Con-

Seized oil tanker stolen from Army Barracks By Niamh Kirk
DIESEL laundering in Co Louth is firmly back in the spotlight following the theft of a seized oil tanker filled with illegal fuel from the Aik-
en Army Barracks in Dundalk early on Sunday Morning. An unknown person broke into Aiken Army Barracks on Barrack Street in the early hours of Sunday Morning. They managed to access the
vehicle, start it and escape by driving through the locked gates. The tanker had been seized in an intelligence led operation in Monaghan on May 22 and was being stored in Aiken
Barracks. It had been modified to fit a concealed tank and contained 20,000 litres of fuel when it was taken by customs. It still contained 20,000 litres fuel when it was stolen on
Sunday morning. The Revenue said that it uses a number of different locations in the area for storage of this type of item but for security reasons could not comment any further.

Tain March celebration The Táin March 2013 will take place on June 7 to 9 with a great programme of events planned along the route from Ardee to Carlingford. The Táin March is a celebration of Ireland’s epic legend, Táin Bó Cuailnge, The Cattle Raid of Cooley. A cohort of experienced walkers covers approximately 20km per day on foot, being joined by partway walkers through the towns and villages along the route, Ardee, Dundalk and Carlingford host the main events of the march, with feasts, re-enactments, drummers, chariots, music and fun. Everyone is invited to join the march as it approaches the towns. The Táin March Committee can provide help with costumes and dressing up, or people can make or invent their own costumes. This year a group of 22 French
Táin enthusiasts are travelling to Co Louth for the first time, specifically to join the Táin March. A group of 27 experienced walkers and those interested are invited to download an application form from “www.tainmarch.com” to complete the march in its entirety. The weekend celebrations kick off on Friday evening in Ardee with a reenactment of the battle between Cuchulainn and Ferdia. On Saturday the events begin in the Market Square in Dundalk at Noon and will include two concerts by Oirialla and Glasheen. The marchers will arrive over the mountains into Carlingford at 3.45pm on Sunday to be welcomed on to the square for a Táin feast, and an evening of music, storytelling and celebrations.

Tain open air concert
Country singing sensation Nathan Carter will headline this year’s Táin Summer Festival’s Open Air Concert in Dundalk’s Market Square. The show takes place this June 9 and tickets for the show are already selling, a percentage of the proceeds will go to the National Council for the Blind it was recently announced. Nathan visited Dundalk last week to officially launch the event and was joined by local performers Who’s Eddie, Wildflowers (Saffyre), Magnet and Donna & Joe McCaul who will be supporting him on the day. It will be his biggest outdoor performance to date. Dundalk Town Council Chairperson Jennifer Green was also on hand to welcome the award winning crooner whose track Wagon Wheel was an international hit on the country charts. “Last year was proof that our refurbished Market Square was the ideal location for an Open Air Concert. I am sure that Nathan will have the Market Square rocking on June 9th as will the other performers. Now we just have to pray for good weather to make the day absolutely perfect,” said Jennifer. Brendan Gallagher, from Prometric, who are sponsoring the event said, “In a very short time, we have learned that Dundalk is one of Ireland’s treasured regions, for its people as much as its remarkable legends. Prometric is pleased to once again support the Táin Festival. Our hope is that the weather will be beautiful and that people from all over will visit and enjoy the activities and culture hosted by the town.” Tickets to see Nathan are €14 with €30 family tickets (two adults and two children aged under 12). Please note under 12s must be accompanied by an adult ticket holder. Further ticket information is available from Dundalk BIDS office at the Market Square, telephone 042 9352842 or 086 4566248.

More success for local fighters Competition was fierce at the Annual Chase International Championships in Birmingham on May, where members of Ireland Wadokai Karate-Do Remnei (IWKR) successfully competed and managed as part of a larger Team Ireland consisting of member clubs from within the Ireland Karate Federation Commission (IKFC) to bring home 28 medals in total. The star of the event had to be an up and coming John McGuinness who won Gold in his Kumite Section (fighting). With John being up against a large contingent from England, Scotland and Wales, he managed to use all his recent training with Sensei Tommy Marrett to his advantage and not only came away with a Gold medal but managed to inspire all within Team Ireland. Amy Dennis was also up against the best in her Kata Section (form), and she was pipped to the post by a very strong contingent from England. With David O’Donnell and Mary Marcus competing at the Annual IWKR International Karate Championships and the 9th Scottish International Open only recently, it was hardly surprising that they come away with five medals between them both.

Man fails in bid over drink driving charge A 30-year-old father of two was disqualified from driving for three years after being convicted of drink driving at Dundalk District Court. Mark Mulroy, 58 Gort Uaine, Clogherhead, had attempted to have the charges against him struck out by claiming that he was not given sufficient information by investigating Gardai. However, Judge Flann Brennan, stated that the Garda had provided the relevant information and on that basis he im-
posed a €350 fine and disqualification. Evidence in the case had been heard on April 17 but judgement was adjourned to allow the judge to consider the outcome of previous cases. The court had heard that the defendant was stopped by Gardai at 1.05am on February 7, 2012, after being observed using a mobile phone. After Gardai noticed a strong smell of alcohol and slurred speech, the defendant was arrested and taken to Dundalk Garda Station.
As doctor was unable to attend to take a sample, the test was conducted on an evidencer, which showed that Mr Mulroy was over the limit for driving. Prior to the sample being taken, the defendant was told that he would have to be observed for 20 minutes to ensure he did not consume anything which would contaminate the test. However, the defendant’s barrister argued that when Gardai informed his client about this observation period,
they failed to tell him why it was required. He stated that in light of two test cases when the intoxilyser was introduced, the Gardai were obliged to provide “objective justification”, such as saying observation was required in conjunction with the manufacturer’s guidance or under best international practice. He argued that as this had not been done, it followed that his client’s detention was unlawful. Inspector Martin Beggy stat-
ed that there is nothing in the legislation to say that Gardai have to elaborate on the reason for 20 minute observation. In making the judgement, Judge Flann Brennan stated: “The Garda gave evidence that a 20 minute detention was required for an uncontaminated sample and on that basis I am not going to make a direction to dismiss”. The disqualification will commence on November 15.

A man who was described in court as a ‘model inmate’ was warned to give up alcohol or face having no future. Judge Flannn Brennan made the remarks as he imposed a prison sentence on Mark McCourt of 56 St Nicholas Ave, Dundalk. “I say this advisably as I don’t want you to get depressed about it, but you have no future if you don’t give up drink as you just can’t handle it. It is a chemical thing and part of an addictive personality, but this is what has brought you to all this”, explained the judge. “Serve your sentence in prison and resolve that you won’t drink when you come out”, he added. The defendant, who is serving a 12 month prison sentence which had initially been suspended by the Circuit Court, admitted theft

of €1,200 worth of oil from the Louth GAA Centre of Excellence in Darver on December 6, 2012. The oil was recovered. On December 18 at Park St he was arrested on public order charges after being ejected from a night club and became abusive to members of the public and Gardai. Mr McCourt also admitted driving at speed and the wrong way on a one-way street at Shirley House Lane in Carrickmacross on Decmber 3. He pleaded guilty to assault at Park St on December 8, causing bruising to a man’s eye and face. Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that in relation to the assault, her client had taken exception with the way an individual had spoken to his aunt. She added that the 22-year-old
with 30 previous convictions has been serving a sentence since January and intends travelled to Tralee to work with his father as a plumber when he is released. Ms Sands stated that her client’s problems arose from difficulties with alcohol and trying to cope with life’s difficulties. Shortly before these incidents a friend of his had died and he didn’t cope very well. “He is currently attending AA, working in the prison kitchen and doing a cooking course. He is a model inmate and giving no difficulty. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a fine of six months for assault, and three months for the driving offences on December 3 and three months for theft of the oil. All sentences will run concurrently.

DkIT students win Dare to be Digital Five students from Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) will work alongside some of the best computer game developers in the world this summer, after winning the Irish team place on Dare to be Digital, an international computer game design competition. The five students from DKIT who won the Irish leg of the competition are Simon McDonnell from Bellurgan, Co. Louth; Seán Gilleece from Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan; Nicola Disley from Swords, Co. Dublin; Ryan McCabe, originally from Ontario in Canada; and
Dr Stephen Brennan Chief Strategy Officer with the Digital Hub with Maura Stanford aka Sonic the Hedgehog a student at at the launch of Dare to be Digital
Dmitrij Starcenko, originally from Daugavpils, Latvia. Their team – Stone Hammer Games – impressed the Irish judging panel with the concept for their proposed game, ‘Two Remaining Souls’. The game will be a co-
op action defence game, played by two players using iPhones. One player will play a third-person action game as a powerful golem, while the other will play a tower defence game as the strategic tower commander.
The goal will be to defend a ‘druid stone’ against waves of increasingly difficult enemies. Both players will view the same world from different angles, while seeing each other’s actions in real time. The five DKIT students will travel to Abertay University in early June, and will spend until the beginning of August developing and fine-tuning their prototype game. The three highestscoring games will receive prizes of £2,500 and the chance to compete for the coveted BAFTA Ones to Watch Award.

The local Rape Crisis Centre and North Louth Hospice have benefited to the tune of €1,000 each after the owners of licensed premises agreed to pay the money to avoid a conviction for selling alcohol to a person under 18. Dundalk District Court heard
that Joanne Rooney of Avenue Inn, Avenue Road, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to selling the cans of alcohol during a test purchase case on April 12 last year without asking for identification. Defence solictor stated that his client had no previous convic-
tions and while the staff didn’t realise the person was under 18, they accept an error was made in not asking for identification. Judge Flann Brennan accepted a donation of €2,000 to the community and warned the proprietor not to repeat their actions.

Kilkerley schools puts best foot forward
Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál Kilkerley were one of a number of schools in the area to take part in the National Walk to School Week. The initiative sees Green Schools working on their Travel Theme, which promotes more walking, cycling and use of public transport, has been encouraging parents and pupils to reap the benefits of incorporating a walk into the school run.
The Kilkerley school, which first launched their WOW (Walk on Wednesday) days back in March to great success, geared themselves up for the challenge with a busy schedule of activities all week including a “Tiptoe Tuesday” and a “Trot on Thursday”. Irene Brennan, Green Schools Coordinator, was delighted with the turn out on the day and said there were “barely any cars in the

s e l i t e c i r p right
car park on the morning”. They also asked families to compose some slogans for the week. The school was also one of three in the county to take part in the Cross Border Walking Challenge, which involved 20 schools. The aim is to get 100% of pupils walking all or part of the way to school on National WOW morning to be in with a chance of winning some of the €2,000 prize fund.
Spat in the face of Garda A man who spat in the face of a Garda after being arrested on public order charges was sentenced to one month in prison after pleading guilty to assault at Dundalk District Court.
Barry Agnew of 37 Cypress Gardens, Bay Estate, was arrested on June 29, 2012, at Market Square Dundalk. He was intoxicated and was aggressive to doormen, and when Gardai arrived he refused to
leave. He then became abusive and aggressive to Gardai and spat in the face of one. The defendant, who has 13 previous convictions, apologised for his behaviour. Solicitor, Frank Mc-
Donnell, stated that the 23-year-old defendant is currently serving a sentence and is due for release in February 2016. He added that his client repeated his apology and had not set out to get into trouble.

Sarah hopes to take final step to Rose of Tralee By Paul Byrne
SARAH McCrave’s bags are packed and she is raring to go as she gets ready to represent Louth ahead of this week’s Regional Finals of the Rose of Tralee in Portlaoise. The 18 year old DkIT business student will travel to Portlaoise this evening as she bids to follow in the fotsteps of last year’s Louth Rose Patricia Marmion who made it all the way to Tralee. “I’m not actually that nervous yet” said Sarah. I know what to expect after the Louth Rose qualification and I’m guessing it will be pretty similar but on a slightly bigger scale. I’m heading down to Portlaoise
today with my mam, brother, aunties, uncles, granny, granddad, boyfriend and some of his family so I won’t be short of support down there.” laughs Sarah. “I’m pretty much ready to go at this stage. I’ve collected my clothes from Neola in River Lane who have kindly sponsored me and I’ve my bags packed and ready to go” she explained. Thursday will be spent meeting all the other Roses as they get to know each other ahead of the selection process. Friday and Saturday the girls will be on stage with Daithi O Se as they try and impress the judges. Sarah hopes to wow the judges with her
Sarah will take to the until Sunday evening to “Obviously it would Tralee but I’m not go- a great experience so far be a dream come ing to be too down if I and I’m delighted that I stage on Friday night find out if she will repbut will have to wait resent Louth in Tralee. through if I made it to don’t make it. bubbly personality and she will entertain them with a recital of Percy French’s classic poem ‘Ach, I don’t know’. “There’s 29 Irish Roses going down to Portlaoise with only seven places up for grabs to make the Grand Finals in Tralee. Although the odds aren’t great Sarah is just going to make the most of her weekend and enjoy the experience.

Snappy idea to promote recycling
O Fiaich students who won the environmental award
O Fiaich College environmental group Waste Watchers have won the Eco-Alu art and design category of the recent Eco Unesco environmental competition. The project, which was one of 300, was selected for the national showcase held in the Mansion House in Dublin on Wednesday May 22. This very prestigious event was compered by RTE’s Stephen Byrne, the guest speaker was President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins. The project consists of a sculpture of a crocodile made from crushed
drinks cans. The idea of the crocodile was decided upon because it was felt that it would be a fun way to get the message across about recycling. He is big - about five metres long and two metres wide. The students enlisted the support of the woodwork department in the form of the sixth year leaving cert applied class who put the timber frame together onto which the cans would be fixed. Only green and silver cans were used for the body as the colour will not fade as much in sun-
13
light. Black cans were used for the spines and red cans for inside his mouth. The cans were flattened, first underfoot and then with a mallet. Each can then had to be screwed individually to the frame. That took a lot of time! While it took a lot of time both to plan and execute, the students found it a very enjoyable experience. To win their section was even better. The sculpture will be sited in Blackrock, near the Bring Banks which are situated in the lower car park at the northern end of the village.
