A GAA injury jinx has struck for the second time in five days after a local hurler suffered a broken bone in his neck on the same pitch as a referee was seriously injured. Local hurler, Mark McGuinness, suffered the damage to his neck at the Sean O’Mahonys field on the Point Road, the same venue where referee Malachy Craven was hurt less than a week earlier. Ironically, the Dundalk man ended up in the same ward as Malachy had been taken to in the Lourdes hospital, and is waiting to follow him to the Mater Hospital when a bed becomes available. Mark was playing for his local Naomh Moninne side against Pearse Og in the Sean O’Mahonys pitch when he was shouldered from the side

whilst picking up the ball. He heard a cracking sound from his neck and knew immediately that he was in trouble. “I was playing hurling with my club Naomh Moninne last Sunday morning when the accident occurred” recalled Mark. “About six or seven minutes before half time I was shouldered in the top of my head Continued on Page 4

As a result, the Faughart side earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records. Roche Emmets had a target of 1189 to beat and with the help of the favourable

weather conditions, they had a total of 1204 taking part in a 30-minute training session. The club are grateful to the Continued on Page 4

Three Louth escorts set for Tralee By Paul Byrne

LOUTH are set to be well represented at this year’s Rose of Tralee festival with three men from the Wee County making it through as Rose Escorts. Liam Lawlor from Louth Village, Jonny McGailey from Dromiskin and Conor Gogarty from Termonfeckin were selected following a detailed interview process where almost 200 men aged between 21 and 30 applied for just 32 positions. Having impressed the judges the trio were selected to take part in a Boot Camp weekend in north Kerry to help them prepare the Escorts for a busy week in Tralee. Liam Lawlor who is studying for a degree in Community Sports Lead-

ership at Dundalk Institute of Technology was delighted to be picked for the ever popular Tralee festival. “I got the news a few weeks back and I was obviously delighted to hear that I had been chosen”,

Jonny McGailey

explained Liam. “Thirty two escorts were chosen to go to Tralee and we were all sent to a sort of bootcamp in Ballybunion a couple of weeks ago where we were put through our paces and got to know each other. It

was a great weekend. We were abseiling and surfing and it was explained what was expected of us as escorts and what duties we have to perform”, added Liam. Joining Liam in Tralee will be Dromiskin man

Jonny McGailey. Johnny a keen footballer plays with his local side St Josephs and is also looking forward to his Tralee adventure. “Obviously I was delighted to get through and it should be a great expe-

rience down there and hopefully we’ll have a bit of fun over the week. We don’t know which Roses we’ll be escorting yet, that won’t be decided until a few days before the festival starts.” explained Johnny. “I’ve met up with the other escorts in the Ballybunion boot camp and they’re a great bunch so it should be a great week in Tralee” he added. On Monday night August 19, one of the 32 Escorts will be announced as the Newbridge Silverware Escort of the Year for 2013 and he will walk away with a prize valued at €5,000. The 2013 Rose of Tralee International Festival & Rose Gathering will take place in Tralee from 14-20 August.

I wasn’t sure at first if it was my neck or my helmet but as I lay on the ground I felt pins and needles and a numbness and I couldn’t move my arms or legs.” He explained. The game was held up for 30

minutes as paramedics treated Mark on the pitch before he was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda to be treated for his injuries. He has been told by doctors that he cracked the seventh vertebrae in his neck and must wait in Drogheda until a bed in the Mater hospital becomes

available. “I’ve been lying in the bed for eight days now and it’s tough mentally not knowing when you’ll be able to get home. The player that shouldered me in the game has called and said how sorry he was and that he couldn’t sleep on that Sunday night” explained Mark.

“Of course I accepted his apology. It was a complete accident and these things can happen during a game. I was actually only reading about Malachy Craven and his accident last week and it’s a bit freaky that I had an accident in the same pitch less than a week later.

Since then I have learnt that I’m in the same ward and the exact same bed as he was in which is a bit of a coincidence” added Mark. Mark hopes to make a full recovery from his accident and is scheduled to be transferred to the Mater Spinal Unit later on this week.

The GAA is a big family and this is one family fun filled day that we will never forget”, he stated.

Paddy’s win will boost local jobs

Dundalk Leader 19th June 2013

By Niamh Kirk

Local Busninessman, Paddy McCusker, has won a landmark legal battle against the Government that will save jobs, businesses and communities not just in Dundalk but across Ireland. Public Enterprise and Reform Minister Brian Hayes, as part of the Pubic Procurement Framework had introduced measures that required all public bodies and service providers to purchase their supplies from centralised agencies that have a sufficient turnover. The result was a breaking of relationships that developed among local businesses and public bodies like schools, and publicly funded offices, over decades. The framework also precluded many local businesses working with any public bodies in the future as they were excluded by the strict criteria set down last year. Last week, in the High Court,

Justice John Hogan ruled that Minister Hayes had acted beyond his powers in making it mandatory for schools and local authorities to use only a centralised system; overturning the requirement and reopening the lines of business for SMEs all over Ireland. Mr McCusker, who has been running supplies business ‘Cuskens’ in Dundalk for 26 years feared that he, and many others would be out of business if action was not taken. “All we were asking for was a level playing field,” said a relieved Mr McCusker last week. With ten employees, he knew that not just his business, but his employees livelihood would be gone in three years if they were excluded from this market. The situation led to local businesses being passed over and when public bodies where in need of supplies, no matter how small or large, they were required to buy from large scale operations

based in Dublin. “Small companies have a lot to offer. We can go up against all the big companies and offer value for money, and more important we can offer a local, friendly service. In an emergency we are about, they are not just a number to us, they are clients and friends,” said Mr McCusker. He got together with nine other business people from around Ireland and launched a legal battle challenging the procurement requirements. Although some counselled that it was a big financial risk to take on with, Mr McCusker felt he had to fight for his business. It has been a tense and tough few months for Paddy, who says he was supported by his wife, and all the staff in Cuskens. “We feared for them. It was a very worrying time for them, for their families, with the uncertainty, but they have been very supportive,” said Mr McCusker.

Louth VEC hold final meeting By Paul Byrne

It was the end of an era last Thursday evening as the Louth VEC had their final ever meeting before they amalgamate with Meath VEC. It was also the end for VEC CEO Dr Padraig Kirk who will now start in his new post in the Department of Education. During the final meeting outgoing Dr Kirk said that it had been

a pleasure to lead the VEC for the past four and a half years and thanked all those who had helped him in his job over the years. “It has been a privilege to work with everybody involved in Louth VEC and I’m delighted to leave the organisation in a very strong position moving into the amalgamation with Co. Meath. We have 4000 full time students, 10000 part-

time and three new schools have been built or are in the process of being built for this area alone” he explained. “I want to thank the staff in Louth VEC from the management to the cleaners to the caretakers, special needs assistants and everybody who has put their shoulder to the wheel to make the VEC such a success over since its inception” he added.

Many tributes were then paid to Dr Kirk from his fellow committee members with Declan Breathnach describing him as ‘an exceptional leader with unrivalled communication skills’ while Una Kirk thanked him for the ‘support he gave during the setting up of the new Gaelscoil and for the manner in which he dealt with staff’.

to everyone and got as many on board with it. The response from them all has been fantastic. They’re all very eager to play. “A couple of them unfortunately can’t make it and they’re gutted”, he added. Chairman Ciaran Bond spoke of the financial importance that this match will bring to the club and said that this match was deliberately planned for the week of the break due to the few home matches that the

club have in this part of the summer. “We have five or six supporters clubs from around the country with people coming down with their families. “It’s a family day too and we’re trying to make it a bit more than a football match”, he stated. Tickets for the game are €10 for adults and €5 for kids. There will also be a banquet afterwards in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, priced at €50.

Woman struck with ashtray

A dispute that arose during a late-night drinking session resulted in a woman being struck on the head with an ashtray. As a result of the incident on July 14 last year, Kieran Mullen of 27 Bachelors Walk, Dundalk, admitted thrown the object when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. The court heard that the defendant was drinking with two women at his home when a dispute arose and he threw the ashtray. The woman was struck on the forehead and had to attend hospital. Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that all three were very drunk and when a disagreement arose, he tried to evict the victim. Although he threw the ashtray, he didn’t intend to injure her. The 44-year-old apologised to the victim and stated that he doesn’t know why it happened. He paid €1,000 in compensation. Judge Michael Coghlan adjourned the case until October 2 for a Probation Report.

Local group’s delight as mobility grant continues By Paul Byrne Brendan Moore, spokesperson for the local Post Polio Support Group has welcomed the ‘fantastic news’ that the motorised transport grant and mobility allowance grant is set to continue until a new scheme is devised in October. The grants were due to cease this month after the Ombudsman ruled they were illegal because they did not apply to those over 65 years.

However, last week ministers agreed a new scheme to provide individual payments to people with severe disabilities who require additional income to address the costs of their mobility needs. A working group will devise the scheme and report back to Cabinet by October. Brendan who lives in Pearse Park is a representative for the local Post Polio Sup-

port Group and as was delighted to hear last week’s decision. “When the Government announced last February that the grant was to be scrapped, our members were fearful of how they would cope without the grant. We started a campaign of contacting our local TDs and Senators on behalf of all groups who are reliant on this grant” explains Brendan. “Last week I received

The incident on July 23, 2012, at Castlebellingham, resulted in the female passenger of another car suffering a broken sternum and three broken ribs. A test showed that he was over the limit for driving. The defendant held a provisional licence, was fully insured and co-operated with Gardai. His solicitor stated that he had been drinking with a friend on the day in question when

she persuaded him to drive her to Drogheda. It was on the way home that the collision occurred. The solicitor added that the unemployed father of two has tried to face up to his alcohol problems and has attended AA. Judge Michael Coghlan imposed a five year ban and €500 fine in respect of the drink driving and dangerous driving charges. Other charges were taken into consideration.

Speedy bar owner nabs thief By Paul Byrne

A thief who robbed money from a Dundalk pub on Thursday afternoon didn’t reckon upon the sprinting skills of the pub owner who chased after him and caught him within 200 metres. The thief entered the off sales section of the Windor Bar on the Dublin Road on Thursday and helped himself to takings in the till before making a speedy exit on foot as he ran towards Park St. However as pub landlord Donal McGeough explains the thief was soon caught having been spotted on CCTV. “I was upstairs in the office working away when I glanced at the camera and noticed the till was open. I immediately knew something had been taken and I ran outside and saw the fella running towards Park St. “I set off after him and thank-

fully I managed to catch up with him by the time he reached the Kingfisher. “I just tackled him and then a fella stopped his car and helped me keep him on the ground until the Gardaí arrived.” explained Donal.

Thankfully nobody was hurt and I managed to get all the money back” added the relieved Windsor owner. The young man was taken to the Garda station in Dundalk where he was being questioned regarding the incident.

Members of Ardee Concert Band

The Ardee Concert Intermediate Band have been invited to give a recital in DKIT, Dundalk on Saturday June 15 at 4pm. The performance will coincide with the Society for Music Education in Ireland’s AGM in the impressive purpose built Music Department of the college campus on the day. Throughout the day there will be a number of performances showcasing

the talent of young musicians in the North - East area. Other performances that will be showcased on the day will include ‘Music Generation Louth’s Junior Orchestra’ and a Performance by members of Louth CCÉ. “They are very lucky to be able to play this wonderful state of the art venue and its truly amazing facilities”, said PRO Sinéad Nutley.

High number of burglaries in Co Louth According to the latest figures from the CSO, County Louth has the fourth highest crime rates in the country with sexual offences, robberies/burglaries and fraud scoring especially highly in the newly released figures. Only Waterford, Limerick and Dublin had more recorded crimes on a per capita basis last year. The figures show that burglaries remain a huge problem in the County with over 93 per 10000 population in 2012. This figure is 50% above the national average and an increase of 23% on the 2011 figures. There were 1146 reported burglaries in 2012 which is an increase of 133 on the 2010 figures.

Sexual offences, murders, attempted murders, burglaries, thefts, fraud and extortion figures all increased from the previous year’s figures. However it wasn’t all bad news as drug offences weapons and explosives, damage to property and public order offences all decreased in 2012. The number of gardai in Louth fell by 4% last year to 292 – down from 305 in 2011. Garda numbers are slightly below the national average at almost 24 gardai per 10,000 population. Other reasons given for the increase in crime in Co. Louth was the continued presence of organised criminal gangs who Gardaí believe are linked to ex paramilitaries and dissident republicans.

Also on the day there will be a number of workshops and talks on a range of topics relating to music education in Ireland. Attendees for the AGM can avail of these workshops and other Seminars on the day, to take worthly hints and tips back to their organisation members to help improve their everyday playing in order to perfect their long-term life-skill.

Tom Myers

1946 - 2013 The family of the late Tom Myers (Farndreg) who died suddenly on May 28th would like to express their sincere gratitude to all who supported them on their recent loss. To neighbours and friends who called, telephoned, sent mass cards, floral tributes and the many who attended the removal and funeral. Thanks to Very Rev. Paul Montague for his assistance and to McGeoughs funeral home, in particular Rosemary for the caring and dignified manner with which she carried out the arrangements. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually we trust that this acknowledgement will be accepted by all as an expression of our gratitude and appreciation. Tom was a well known figure in his community who had contributed over thirty years of dedicated service to voluntary bodies in his area. He was also a noted sportsman, with fishing and shooting his principal outlets. Sadly Tom collapsed and died while on a day's fishing trip to Mullingar and the sudden nature of his death has left his family devastated and neighbours and friends in shock for he was a guiding influence in many lives. One of a family of five of Tommy and May Myers from Hill Street in Dundalk, Tom was educated at the Friary N.S. and Dundalk Technical School from which he served his apprenticeship in Commercial Road Vehicles (CRV) as a fittermechanic. On completion of his apprenticeship, Tom emigrated to Canada to work for a short time in the mines. He returned to Dundalk for his marriage to Peggy Cunningham and decided not to return to Canada. He found work in Bord na Mona, and later in maintenance in Louth County Council before joining the ESB where he worked for 28 years. When he retired four years ago, Tom had progressed to Fleet and Engine Manager with the ESB out of their Dundalk depot and was highly regarded by colleagues

and management alike. He was secretary of Stabannon Gun Club for 25 years, an officer and committee member of Ardee Gun Club and chairman of the Forest Angling and Shooting Club. Tom's involvement was not confined to the committee room for he actively participated, undertaking sea angling off Greenore and KIllybegs, and only recently he enhanced his fly-fishing skills with some lessons. He recently joined other anglers from the town on a trip of a lifetime on a fishing trip to Alaska and had intended to return this September. Motorbikes was another passion, and he liked nothing better than to strip down an engine and rebuild a bike in his garden shed. That passion for speed led to the fulfillment of a lifetime ambition to drive a Formula I car in Mondello and sadly he never got to enjoy the present that his family acquired for him to drive a Porsche in Mondello, a treat that he was due to complete on the day of his funeral. Tom's contribution to improving the quality of life in his local community started with the local Foróige Youth Club, after which he became involved in one of the most successful community

projects in the country, 'The House' which operates out of Cox's Demesne. 'The House' provides a number of worthy projects within the community and Tom served as chairman for 22 years, always anxious to work behind the scenes to ensure the viability of the project. Tom's contribution to his community has been acknowledged by many since his death, and he will be greatly missed for his wise counsel and common sense approach. He was an inspiration to many, especially his family and they are heartbroken by his death, for he was a constant and loving presence in their lives that can never be replaced. In particular he took great delight in his grandchildren devoting many hours to them every day. Tom is survived by his wife, Peggy (née Cunningham) who is a native of Philip Street, sons, Cormac and Niall (both Dundalk), daughters, Nicola Maughan, Andrea and Aoife (all Dundalk), brother, Paddy (Farndreg), sisters, Marie Farrell (Belfry), Rita Devine (Dublin) and Dolores Doherty (Seafield Lawns), grandchildren, Haleigh, Rhys, Leah, Éabha, Erin, Cara Mae and Shay, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his son Aidan in

2006. Having reposed at home, Tom's remains were taken to St. Fursey's Church, Haggardstown where Requiem Mass was celebrated by Very Rev. Paul Montague, Adm., Holy Redeemer parish who gave the eulogy. The readings were given by brother-in-law Nicholas and nephew, Alan Doherty while the Prayers of Intercession were led by sister Dolores Doherty, nieces Denise Power and Ciara Myers, nephew Colin Devine, brother-in-law Brendan Cunningham, and grandson Rhys Maughan. The Offertory Gifts were presented by nephew Karl Myers and god-daughter Roisin Hillen while the music was provided by Anne King. The Communion Reflection was provided by Gareth Weldon who had penned a poignant poem especially for Tom after Aidan's death, and by Clodagh O Mahoney from 'The House'. After Mass, burial took place in the adjoining cemetery and the large attendance at both reflected the deep sympathy felt for the family at their great loss and the deep regard by which Tom was held in his community. Month's Mind Mass on June 23rd in St. Fursey's Church, Haggardstown at 11.00a.m.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus, and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never know to fail). G.B.

New opel insignia

The new Opel Insignia has been launched and should be available here for the New Year. This is not an all new Insignia rather a re-work of the predecessor to bring it up to date with a more contemporary design, improved equipment and new engines. There is a range of four new engines joining the Insignia line-up, on the petrol front there is now a 1.4i VVT Turbo (140PS), 1.6i SIDI Turbo (170PS), 1.8i VVT (140PS) and a 2.0i SIDI Turbo (250PS) – the diesel range comprises 2.0 CDTi (120PS), 2.0 CDTi (130PS), 2.0 CDTi (140PS), 2.0 CDTi (163PS) and 2.0 CDTi (195PS) – so there should be engine to suit all. The 2.0-litre SIDI Turbo (250PS) is available with two or four-wheel-drive with the option of a six-speed manual transmission with Start/Stop function, or a new low-friction six-speed automatic gearbox – which is also available on the 1.6i SIDI Turbo unit. The new Insignia range includes a range of optional safety equipment such as radar and camera-based assistance systems

(including adaptive cruise control and second-generation park assist), and on the comfort front premium seats, and ‘Open & Start’, the keyless entry and start system. At the front the grille has been modified; it is wider and lower than the predecessor. The rear has been re-designed to look wider and lower with the gloss chrome logo bar positioned lower on the tailgate and LED rear lighting. There are new leather and cloth trims with improved dashboard materials and decors. There is completely re-designed centre console and instrument cluster, simplifying the functionality with reductions of

controls and new dials. The optional infotainment display has been increased in size from 5” to 8” with a high-resolution colour display. It has touch-screen functionality which allows drivers to access all functions and sub-menus such as radio stations, song titles, smartphone connection or 3D navigation in an intuitive and safe way. Its illuminated, touch-sensitive surface reacts immediately to finger movements, with even individual letters and numbers being accessible via this method. Up to 60 favourite menus can be stored from all functions and Apps can also be downloaded via the car’s Bluetooth-connected internet.

the mazda CX-5

Launched in 2012 the Mazda CX-5 has under gone a number of revisions. Mazda CX-5 specified with the SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission will now have a kickdown switch, to help prevent unwanted downshifts or initiate faster ones when more torque is desired. The CX-5’s engines have been modified to allow free-revving due to an enhanced power train control module. The rev counters have been updated accordingly with higher redlines - 5,500rpm for the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 (up from 5,250rpm) and 6,800rpm for the SKYACTIV-G 2.0 (up from 6,500rpm). On the inside there have been some mod-

ifications to improve the functionality of the Bluetooth system to encompass the audio system which now includes a voice command feature for music management as well as display and readout capability for email and SMS received via a Bluetooth-connected smartphone, where TFT display is fitted.

Plus there is a new silver accent for the audio panel button making it easier to locate. On CX-5’s fitted with fabric upholstery there will be more robust vinyl armrests fitted. Mazda have introduced a number of new paint colours which include Stormy Blue, Meteor Grey and Jet Black. And

Mazda are introducing Soul Red which is currently only available on the Mazda6, Soul Red combines two different base coats which according to Mazda gives a deep, intensive red that seems to radiate from within when lit up, in contrast to its blackish appearance where shaded.

Hyundai santa fe

The new generation Hyundai Santa Fe SUV has been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP the independent vehicle assessment organisation. It scored 96% in the ‘adult occupant’ category, with the judges awarding maximum points in the side barrier test thanks to the good protection afforded to all body regions. In

the ‘child occupant’ category it received a score of 89% and 86% in the ‘safety assist’ category. The pedestrian rating was 71% thanks in part to its active bonnet which in the event of an impact with a pedestrian, the bonnet rises to enable greater absorption of force, helping to minimise the potential for serious injuries.

Standard safety equipment on the 2.2 litre CRDi Style 2WD entry model includes ESP, Hill Start Assist, Vehicle Stability Management, Trailer Stability Assist and seven airbags. And the Active Bonnet System, which raises the bonnet by 60mm in the event of a pedestrian collision to help minimise the impact of head injuries.
