Fire scare highlights new road problems By Paul Byrne

Senator Mary Moran has again hit out at the dangers regarding works in Stapleton Place after a fire brigade was delayed reaching a fire at her home in Haggardstown having been unable to go up the revamped street due to traffic. Ironically Senator Moran has been highlighting the dangers of the new works in Stapleton Place for over four months. This latest incident has, she says, highlighted just how potentially dangerous the road has become. “On Friday evening last we had a very frightening experience when a car caught fire at the gateway of our home. My husband Damien rang the fire brigade immediately and then rang me to

alert me. “The fire brigade took over twenty minutes to arrive at our house for a journey that barely takes half that time. On the fire brigade’s arrival, when asked what had caused the delay, the fire officers reported that it was caused by the backup of traffic from Stapleton Place “, explained Mary. “They reported that they had been forced to travel up the wrong way on a one way street, and had had to totally avoid Stapleton Place due to traffic congestion as the traffic there had nowhere to go . “When I approached the junction for our house I was met by neighbours directing traffic from our road as the smoke and fumes had be Continued Page 16

Two Louth Roses make it to Tralee By Paul Byrne You wait four years for a Louth Rose to grace the famous dome in Tralee and then two come along at once. Cooley’s Patrcia Marmion became the first Louth Rose to make it to Tralee since Karol Ann Keenan back in 2008 when she qualified for the ever popular event in Portlaoise last weekend. And there was double joy for Louth when Stabannon’s Claire Lynch, representing Melbourne also made it through to the grand finals which will be held in August. Speaking yesterday morning a hoarse but delighted Patricia said making it to Tralee was a dream come true for her. “Like most girls in Ireland I’ve watched the Rose of Tralee since I was a young girl and I always had it in the back of my mind to give it Claire Lynch Continued on Page 8

for recovery and growth, and further investment of the type that we have experienced through companies like Paypal. “The Yes vote sends out a strong message to international investors that Ireland is a great place in which to invest and create jobs. “There have been thousands of jobs created by for-

I believe the result will help us maintain this stream of investment”, the Minister explained. “This is a very positive step for Ireland as we focus on keeping our economy on a sustainable track to recovery and I am glad the people of Louth responded positively to

Another step closer to Narrow Water bridge

Dundalk Leader 6th June 2012

The start of work on a proposed bridge across the Newry River at Narrow Water between Omeath and Warrenpoint has moved a step closer with a decision to allow it proceed to the next round of a European funding process. The Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) which administers the INTERREG IVA Programme for Northern Ireland, the Border Region of Ireland and Western Scotland, has agreed that the bridge project should proceed to the second stage of an ongoing assessment process. The latest funding call for the

programme closed in February with the Narrow Water Bridge one of 91 applications received in respect of the approximately €30m of funding to be allocated. As part of the next round of the funding competition, a full analysis is now being prepared on the financial and technical aspects of delivering the bridge – a partnership between Louth County Council, Newry & Mourne District Council and East Border Region. Once a business plan is submitted, the project will be assessed alongside 11 others that have pro-

ceeded to the second phase. Earlier this year, both the US Ambassador to Ireland and Fáilte Ireland supported the project which is seen as vital to unlocking the tourism potential that exists in the area surrounding Carlingford Lough, both in the Republic of Ireland and the North. Planning applications in respect of Narrow Water Bridge are currently before An Bord Pleanála as a strategic infrastructure development and the Department of Environment/Planning Northern Ireland.

Each year Blackrock Tidy Towns select somebody for the position who has contributed positively to life in the village. This year Mary Murtagh was asked to fulfil the role because of the huge support she has given to Blackrock Tidy Towns over many years in physical, advisory and financial terms, according to Tidy Towns Chairman, John Horan. “Mary has effectively been a

There has been a record 18 entries for the raft race so far, mean-

Update on RTE studio expected this week By Niamh Kirk

More details on whether RTE’s regional studio based in Dundalk are expected later this week. The stations director Noel Curran has described the financial position of the state broadcaster as “not sustainable” and the company is aiming to break even next year. The cuts are an effort to close a €25 million deficit in the broadcaster’s books.

It is hoped that the company will save €15m from a staff voluntary redundancy scheme which would be the equivilant of 200 jobs. While the job losses in Dundalk will not be high, a closure of both the Television and radio regional studio removes the presence of the national state broadcaster from the North East as the region fights for economic recovery. As one of Ireland’s largest towns and a gateway town between North

and South the loss to the public may be less overt but none the less important. National media coverage of the area at a time when it hopes to draw investor interest as well as the limiting of the areas ability to contribute to the national identity, a cornerstone of public broadcasting ethos. The offices are also located in the same building as the Vodafone Call centre which are expected to be closed by the end of the year also.

HSE urge parents to make News sure that their children are in Brief vaccinated against measles Eucharistic Congress

The HSE has urged parents to make sure that their children are vaccinated against measles as the holiday season approaches. People around the country will be out and about and travelling around over the summer months increasing the risk of coming into contact with measles, says HSE Assistant National Director of Health Protection, Dr Kevin Kelleher. “A measles outbreak in west Cork has now affected 51 children, including two who have been hospitalised, showing just how infectious measles is, how serious infection can be, and the importance of vaccination to prevent unnecessary illness and the asso-

ciated complications. “Most of the children infected in Cork are teenagers and 88% of cases have never received any dose of MMR vaccine. This large and rapidly spreading outbreak is a major concern not only to people in West Cork but for the whole of Ireland. “Vaccination with MMR is the only way to protect against measles. Failure to vaccinate leaves children exposed to a serious and potentially fatal disease. But just as importantly, it exposes other children especially the most vulnerable babies under one year of age to this devastating disease. Children under one are those most likely to be liable to the severe

complications and possibly death. “MMR vaccine is routinely provided at 12 months of age and again at preschool age (4-5 years of age), so those aged less than 12 months will not have received the vaccine. Older children who did not get the MMR vaccine at these ages need to be vaccinated and their parents should contact their GP. Children younger than 13 years of age who missed out on MMR vaccine can still get it free of charge from their GP. Older children and teenagers can get the vaccine free but may have to pay an administration fee,” added Dr Kelleher.

Dundalk Cursillo are holding a pilgrimage to the 50th International Eucharistic Congress, Dublin on Wednesday June 13. Bus will leave St Patrick’s, Dundalk at 7.30am and fare of €50 includes entry fee to Congress events and meal voucher. Events include Mass, Solemn Eucharistic Procession, Talks, Youth Events and much more. For bookings or more info contact Steven at 0872030855.

Passing of former TD and Local drama group Minister Padraig Faulkner seek rehearsal space He served in every Fianna Fáil led government until 1980 when he was elected Ceann Comhairle before he retired in 1987, however three years later he was appointed to the Council of State by President Patrick Hillary. Louth’s current Finna Fail TD and also a former Ceann Cohmairle Seamus Kirk said “Pádraig was an iconic political figure in Louth because of his many and varied achievements in a long political career. A man of great integrity and powerful application to every task to be undertaken, he will be remembered for his dedication to the people of Louth and to the country. He served as Ceann Comhairle from October 1980 to June 1981 and was appointed to the Council of State, by then President, Mr Patrick Hillary, in 1990. “I had the privilege of serving with him from November 1982 to the General Election in 1987. His vast political experience, his prudent and sensible advice was always readily available to the members of the Parliamentary Party at that time. We always had a close working relationship as Public Representatives in Louth. His wise counsel will unfortunately no longer be available to us. “I wish to express my sincere sympathy to his wife Kitty and their children and grandchildren at this time. “

A Dundalk drama group have pleaded with the Dundalk community to help them find a large empty retail unit for use as a rehearsal room. Sandy Sneddon who is the drama co-ordinator with Encore productions says the drama group are planning a pantomime in the town hall to entertain the town this Christmas but have nowhere to rehearse. “We are a drama group for adults with intellectual disabilities based in RehabCare resourse centre and have been run-

ning for over 10 years. We previously rehearsed above McGeoughs pub on Roden Place but that space has been let out now so basically we need a new place. “Ideally the space would be in the town centre and it would need to be wheelchair accessible with toilets and lights. I suppose a large empty retail unit would be perfect” explained Sandy. We probably have about 50 people involved with the drama group and we’d put on one big production each year in the town hall. I think it’s important

for the community to see that citizens with intellectual disabilities can provide entertainment and are a valuable asset to the community. It also signals that these people are able and available for work” Obviously there can be no production if we have nowhere to rehearse but hopefully somebody can help us out and make our dream come true” he added. Anybody who can help Sandy should contact him at RehabCare resource centre on 0429328766 or at 0861290936.

Former Louth County Finna Fail TD Pádraig Faulkner passed away last week aged 94. He was first elected to the Dail in 1957 where he served as a Teachta Dala as well as in a number of ministerial positions until 1987. The son of a Fine Gael supporting father and Fianna Fail supporting mother, Mr Faulkner was born in Dundalk and lived in Dunleer. He attended the CBS before going to St Patricks College to train as a teacher and following the political ideology of his mother he joined the Finna Fail Party. His first run at election in the 1954 Louth bielection was unsuccessful but he learned and was voted in during the general election three years later. He had a notable career being appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Gaeltacht by the Taoiseach, Seán Lemass, and being appointed to the Cabinet by Taoiseach, Jack Lynch in 1968. Claire Lynch and Patricia Marmion celebrate reaching the Rose of Tralee final

I’m looking forward to representing Louth and promoting our county down in Tralee.” Meanwhile Melbourne Rose Claire Lynch who left Stabannon for Australia four years ago made a triumphant return to these shores when she too made it through to the finals in August. Claire’s sister Deirdre who was in Portlaoise for the

qualifiers was understandable delighted with her sisters success. “We’re only after leaving Claire back to the airport this morning after having a fantastic weekend in Portlaoise. Claire has always wanted to attend the Rose of Tralee and when we heard her name called out we were overjoyed” said Deirdre. “Apparently this is the

first time in 11 years that the Melbourne Rose has qualified so they’re delighted with Claire back in Australia as well. When she was qualifying for the Melbourne heats Claire’s party piece was to show the judges how to play Gaelic Football so when she was in Portlaoise she brought an Aussie Rules football and showed the judges a few

tricks” laughed Deirdre. Both Roses are keen GAA enthusiasts with Patricia a Cooley Kickhams and Louth regular while Claire plays with St Kevins GAA club in Melbourne having previously played with Stabannon. Coincidently Louth Rose Patricia is a cousin of Claire’s boyfriend Niall so both Roses already know each other well.

Irish Coast Guard give advice on water safety Irish Coast Guard Greenore has begun its Compliance Monitoring Patrols (CMP) for 2012. The purpose of a Coast Guard CMP is to monitor, record and advise on the current legislation regarding the wearing of suitable Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) while engaged in water based activities on our coasts, lakes and rivers. In general a suitable PFD must be carried for each person on board (regardless of the size of craft) and must be worn by; Anyone on board an open craft that is under 7 metres (23 ft) in length; Anyone under the age of 16 on board any craft; Anyone being towed (Skiers, Doughnut rings etc); Anyone on a personal water-

craft (Jet ski etc). Greenore Coast Guard has found that there is a good public understanding of the benefits of wearing PFDs while on the water, but unfortunately every year there are tragedies which could be avoided if PFDs were worn by all. “With this in mind we would appeal to all involved in water based pursuits this year to note the legal requirements on PFD

use. The legislation is in place to ensure we can continue to safely enjoy our water based pastimes’, a spokesman stated. The Irish Coast Guard would also like to remind you that if you are going on the water; Have the most recent weather forecast before you leave; Inform someone ashore when you are leaving, where you are going and when you will be returning; Wear suitable clothing for the trip (including PFD); Do not depend on mobile phones in emergencies (they may not work at sea) Remember if you see someone in distress or are concerned about an overdue friend or relative at sea please call 999 / 112 and ask for the Irish Coast Guard.

Native Irish lizard makes appearance By Niamh Kirk

There was a surprise visitor to one home in Dundalk this week when Daire McAnallen was walking through his parent’s home only to discover a little lizard lounging in the hall. The couple had recently returned from a holiday in Cyprus and thought that the little guy may have stowed away in a suitcase. When Daire approached

Ireland’s only native lizard

the visitor he curled up but eventually was coaxed into shoebox. The agile lizard made a few escapes before he was returned to safety. However the Irish Wildlife Trust confirmed that it is

a “beautiful specimen” of the only one lizard native to Ireland, the viviparous or common lizard. The IWT representative said that the lizards became increasing active during the good

weather, but not to worry, as they are harmless. The reptiles come out to absorb energy by basking in the sun when the opportunity presents itself but are rarely found indoors as their habitat is primarily grasslands or rural gardens. Male and females usually come out during spring and if found the lizards should not be kept but returned to the wild as they form breeding pairs.

Investment for seafood sector By Niamh Kirk

There is to be an investment of more than €58k for County Louth in the seafood processing industry. The hope is that the capital will help realise the sector’s potential and instigate a jobs boost. The investment for the county comes as a part of a national investment in the sector to the sum of €15.5 million, €3.2 million of which was provided under the EU co-funded Seafood Process-

ing Business Investment Scheme. The Scheme is implemented as part of the Irish Seafood Development Programme 2007-2013. Between 2010 and 2011 the sector received an investment of €10m, this further investment reflects the government’s position that the sector will play an important role in economic recovery. Twenty one seafood processing companies across Ireland are taking part, among which are Seafood Processors Ltd. T/A Mor-

gan’s Fine Fish, Omeath, and the aim is to see 142 new jobs nationally created on the back of this. Increased sales of almost €10m of up €44m are expected over the next three years. Fine Gael Louth T.D. Peter Fitzpatrick, has welcomed the announcement stating “The Irish seafood industry has grown from strength to strength in recent years and this investment will ensure that that trend continues into the future.

No money to provide launching access to water CLLR Oliver Morgan has labelled the town management’s position on the question of providing access for our Dundalk Sub Aqua search and rescue to the Castletown River estuary and Dundalk Bay as ambivalent. Councillor Morgan stated that at a meeting with members of the Sub Aqua in early February, Town Clerk Frank Pentony, on behalf of the Dundalk Town Council, told the sub aqua that they are looking at every avenue open to try and get the slipway built. “We know as well as anyone how important it is to build one but unfortunately our hands are somewhat tied on the matter... but

we haven’t given up and we are exploring different avenues and what I will say is that if there is a solution to be found, we will find it”, explained Mr Pentony. However, in a subsequent answer to a question from Councillor Morgan:Cllr Morgan has since asked if there are any specific plans for the council to provide launching access to the water, only to be told that there are no plans. “There are currently no plans for the council to provide launching access to the river and bay for Dundalk Sub Aqua Club. I think the Sub Aqua Club do a marvellous job and if we can help them

in any way we will but it is not our role to provide a launching facility. “They are not a state agency so we are not obliged to build that facility for them. The land we do own down at Soldiers Point is not suitable for a launch facility. So as well as having no finaces or resources to help them we also have no land” he stated.”. Councillor Morgan is now calling for the Town Clerk to outline the different avenues to providing rescue-craft launching facilities which he has explored on behalf of the Council and is anxiously awaiting a response in this critically urgent matter.

Yes. I think Croatia and Italy are beatable and if we can get four points from those two games we’ll probably qualify.

Yes, I think they’ll do well. A win against Croatia and a draw against Italy and we’ll be in good shape. It’s just great that we’re involved in the championships this time around.

We have a good squad this time especially up front so I think they could do well. I’d love to see them play England in the quarter finals.

My heart says yes and my head is saying I’m not so sure. They’ve definitely got a chance but they’re going to have to be at their very best.

Advice for homeowners in debt By Niamh Kirk

The founder of Freedom from Debt, Ben Gilroy, is holding a free information session in Dundalk this Thursday, June 7. The aim is to give people a firm understanding of their rights as home owners and inform them of how to navigate the often complex processes and conflicting rights involved

in debts, receiverships and property rights. Mr Gilroy received a lot of positive attention when a Youtube video entitled “Consititution halts Sheriff” went viral. The video, which received more than 250,000 hits when it went online in February this year, shows two Gardai accompanying a ‘sheriff’ as he attempted to repossess a family home in Co Laois.

However Mr Gilroy used his knowledge of the Irish constitutional law to keep the sheriff at bay. Since he has appeared on ‘Today with Pat Kenny’ and ‘The Morning Show’ on TV3. Their presentation in Dundalk is part of a country-wide tour, and will try to shed light on the specific events surrounding the Irish Government’s decision in 2008 to administer a blanket guarantee to unsecured

bondholders of Anglo Irish Bank. The group are in the process of taking legal action against Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Finance Michael Noonan preventing them from paying out any further public money to unsecured bondholders. The meeting takes place in the Fairways Hotel on Thursday June 7 at 7.30 and is free to attend.

Stąd pomysł by ruszyć z miejsca, póki ładna pogoda i w czasie gdy dzieci mają wakacje.

Rehearsals for Sound of Music

Rehearsals for Dundalk Musical Society’s forthcoming production of The Sound Of Music will begin on Wednesday June 6 at 8.30pm in Dundalk Tennis Club. The society are calling on females aged 16 and over to be part of the nuns chorus. Rehearsals will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays for the month of June with a break for the summer. The rehearsals will resume at the end of August and the show will take place from October 16 to 21 in An Tain Theatre. The society operates an open door policy so no experience is necessary, a love of singing and musical theatre is all that is required. The society is also celebrating some good news this week after learning that Tim Ahern has been nominated as Best Actor for his role as Fagin in last October’s incredibly successful production of Oliver at the Association of Irish Musical Societies Awards. The awards will take place on Saturday June 16 in the INEC in Killarney and a delegation from the society will travel along with Tim to the ceremony.

Fire scare highlights some road problems Continued from Page 1 come so bad it was impossible to get down the road. I had to abandon my car but couldn’t get near the gate of my house to see if the children were ok.” added Senator Moran. “This has further heightened for me the importance of a review of the recently installed cycle lanes. We were very lucky that the fire was outside our home. Indeed one fire officer at the scene acknowledged that if the fire had happened nearer to

our home the outcome could have been much more serious. “With fire, time is of the essence here and fire will not wait. I dread to think what could happen if a fire brigade is prevented from getting to a fire where people’s lives are in danger because of traffic congestion caused by cycle lanes. We have to put safety first and the fire on Friday has once again proven to me that the situation needs to be addressed urgently.” Senator Moran also ques-

tioned the new system which has centralised all emergency calls in the east of the country. The new Eastern Region Control Centre is based in Dublin and receive calls from people in Co. Louth when they report a fire. According to Senator Moran this new system could potentially waste precious time. “My husband reported that it had taken over 20 mins for the fire brigade to arrive. On phoning them he was shocked to discover he was put through to a

phone service in Dublin who proceeded to ask him a list of questions before sending out the fire brigade. “He repeatedly asked to speak to someone in Dundalk to give specific directions to the house but was told that this was not possible. It would obviously have been much easier for Damien to give directions had he been speaking to someone who knew the area and as everyone knows every minute is precious when dealing with a

fire” she explained. Speaking about the new Eastern Region Control Centre, Dundalk fire officer John Cummins said that this was a modernisation measure rather than a cost cutting measure. “We changed this system last November which means the call centre is centralised in Dublin. This is bringing us in line with the rest of the country where call centres are regional rather than in each county.” he explained.

Council staff will not act as debt collectors By Paul Byrne

CLLR Oliver Morgan extracted a commitment from the County Manager, Conn Murray, at the May monthly meeting of the Dundalk Town Council, that council staff would not be used to act as debt-collectors for the controversial household charge tax. In response to Councillor Morgan’s Motion:and under questioning from other councillors, the Manager outlined his position. “No Council staff, either junior or senior, will be asked to act as debt-collectors for the household charge. However, I would urge people to pay the charge, because the council cannot provide services without the money to pay for

them”. Cllr Morgan then asked if the money collected from hardpressed householders and commercial ratepayers’, was being used wisely and prudently. In a question which he put to the Town Clerk, Frank Pentony, he asked “How many household charges will it take, at €100 each, to pay the lawyers in the two judicial review hearings in the High Court, involving this Council and McCaughey Developments Ltd, which were heard before Mr. Justice Hanna and Mr. Justice Hedigan. Would it be 3,200 households?” The Town Clerk’s reply was to the effect that the amount spent

on the McCaughey Developments Ltd v Dundalk Town Council Judicial Review proceedings was not as high as €320,000 (or 3,200 household charges) but only €173,000 (or about 1,750 household charges). County Manager, Conn Murray, then stated that it was not accurate to say that 1,750 household charges would be used to defray the cost of the lawyers in the illfated McCaughey Developments Ltd v Dundalk Town Council legal proceedings, because the money to pay the lawyers would actually be obtained from several different sources, such as the central government subvention, the commercial rates, the parking meter charge, etc.

to enter of €2 for adults and €1 for children and we have lots of prizes including trophies for kids and cash for adults. “It is something a bit different and those interested can get the entry forms and booklets from Devenney’s in Crowe St so there is plenty of time to get the entry in before June 16”, added Georgina. JAGUAR SPORTBRAKE

This is the new, rather handsome Jaguar XF Estate or should we say in marketing speak the Jaguar XF Sportbrake. It is due to hit the roads in autumn 2012, with prices yet to announced. Based on the XF Saloon platform the Sportbrake is only 5mm longer,

yet it is only 70kg heavier, nearly 5cm of extra headroom in the rear and it will swallow 1,675-litres of cargo with the rear seats down. Every panel as you would expect when looking at the car from the ‘B’ pillar back is new. We would expect the mechanics and engine line-up

to remain the same, although the Sportbrake will feature selflevelling air suspension to aid the driving dynamics which will make the Sportbrake a desirable towing car for caravanners, boat and horse owners. The tailgate can be specified with power struts and features a soft close function, avoiding any requirement for it to be slammed shut. Set into the boot floor is a panel that splits into three sections to allow smaller loads to be neatly wedged

I n t e r brand highlighted that businesses like Toyota that had improved their performance in the report have shown ability in “adapting to a new reality” in an uncertain business climate.

and avoiding a precious or fragile cargo being thrown about. Jaguar have incorporated LED lighting into the tailgate so at long last you can see what you doing, wish other manufacturers would follow. The rear seats can be lowered remotely without having to stretch into the boot. The boot measures 550-litres with the rear seats up and increases to 1,675-litres with them down.
