Dundalk’s newest millionaire yet to claim prize By Niamh Kirk
Dundalk could be home to a new millionaire as last Saturday’s winning lotto ticket was sold in Mace Stores on the Carrick Road. The winning ticket was a €4 quick-pick bought on Saturday and by the time the Dundalk Leader went to print it on Tuesday evening the lotto spokesperson confirmed the prize had not yet been claimed. While the new millionaire may be celebrating secretly, or is still unaware of their windfall, the staff in Mace and the shop’s owner Annette Quigley are buzzing from the win. Mace Stores was full of energy and colour on a gloomy Tuesday morning as balloons, streamers and banners announced that they were the shop that sold the €2m winning ticket. “People have been in and out of the shop wondering who it might be but we have no idea.” In cases where lotto winners would like not to be named the

Garda found man with Hammer A Garda found a glass shatter hammer on a local man when he carried out a drugs search on him. Dundalk Court heard that a report was received of men acting suspiciously at Bridge Street on November 12 last. Garda Clegg who responded to it came across Patrick English (22) of Oakland Park who turned and walked away and entered an off-licence. When he came out the Garda searched English and found the hammer. Solicitor Conor McGuill said
that English came by the hammer earlier which had been left by somebody else. Inspector Martin Beggy said that English had eight previous convictions, and previously received suspended jail sentences. Judge Flan Brennan sentenced him to four months jail or 120 hours community service. He deferred finalising penalty until October 17 to receive a report whether the defendant was suitable for community service. He warned English “you wouldn’t want to be in any trouble between now and that date.”

No change to Louth electoral boundary By Niamh Kirk
Louth County Consituency borders will not be rearranged as a part of the Constituency Commissions redrawing of the country’s electoral map. The constituency map for Co Louth was redrawn in October 2007 to include an area of Meath surrounding Drogheda town. In 2011 the number of TDs was increased giving the county five representitives in the Dail. There had been only four since 1977. Following the results of the 2011 Census the population of many areas has shifted. The commission plans to reduce the number of constituencies in Ireland from 43 to
40, and to reduce the number Ireland’s 166 TDs to 158. Drogheda based Labour TD, Ged Nash, welcomed the recommendation that the constituency remain untouched. Deputy Nash argued for the retention of the boundry in his submission to the Commission. He commented that “For far too long Drogheda was in the ludicrous position of being effectively divided with almost a third of its population being forced to vote in Meath for general elections. I also believe that it makes far more sense for Meath Coast to be included as this is a natural part of Drogheda’s hinterland and their concerns would be much more in line with Drogheda’s than Navan’s 20 miles away.”
The Protect Rockmarshal Mountain group are planning a fun walk this weekend to help raise funds for the costly process of objecting to Gealectric’s hopes to build five wind turbines on the mountain. Gaelectic’s application was recently rejected by Louth County Council which the community gathered together and utilised every resource to submit their opinions and issues with the energy company’s plans in their area too. Gaeletric have now appealed the rejection to An Bord Pleanala and the process of fighting to preserve their community’s natural attributes must start once again. In order to respond effectively to Gaelectric’s planned development in the area the group must engage with a number of specialist consultants who can examine and reply to the company’s detailed plans and appeal. The community’s main concerns are with the turbine size, the impact on homes in the area and the extent of the shadow flicker as well as the striking impact on the landscape. Fighting a company who has easier access to specialist knowledge and experience is always a costly business. The difficulty of funding is frequently a decisive factor in who D wins out and to date the expensive proc- H ess of objection as been contributed to by t local residents and businesses. Despite the e significant amounts donated by these community minded people it covers only part o the costs and it is hoped that the ‘Fun Walk’ d H will help make-up the short fall. The walk will begin in the car park of Fit- b zpatrick’s restaurant at 3pm and will last M about one hour depending on how energetfi ic a walker you are. Participants will return to Fitzpatrick’s for a barbeque. For information on getting involved call John Collins on 087 l t 7821918.

Salad days in Dulargy NS The Gardening Project in Dulargy National School is now in its third year and is going from strength to strength. Run by parents Roisin Cotter, Tara Mullen and Ann O’Hagan, the project gives each child in the school the opportunity to sow seeds and watch their plants grow, until they are ready to be brought home. Each class grows flowers or vegetables or both. This year Junior Infants grew sunflowers, Senior Infants grew tomatoes, 1st and 2nd class grew strawberries and onions, 3rd class grew courgettes and pumpkins, 4th class grew salad crops, beetroot and poppies, 5th class grew carrots, parsnips and turnips and 6th class grew cabbages, broccoli, lettuce, scallions, celery and marigolds. A wonderful addition to the project this year was the installa-

bringing home big bags of salad this week, produced a beautiful salad of mixed leaves, rocket, coriander, radish, beetroot tops and chive flowers for everyone in the class to try. The project continues in September with the harvest of the remainder of the crops.
Man went off the rails
Anthony Connolly (30) of Slieve Foy Park, Muirhevnamor carried out a number of thefts during a two month period that he “went off the rails”. Solicitor Sean T O’Reilly told Dundalk Court that all the offences occurred at Christmas and January this year. Judge Flan Brennan asked for a report on the
defendant before dealing with the offences and put the case back to October 17. Garda Inspector Martin Beggy outlined that the defendant took a television on December 4 last from Tesco on the Long Walk which was recovered undamaged. He also stole an IPod and two DVDs from Dunnes Stores on
December 20 in the Marshes, and was observed throwing a red Heatons bag away at the Ramparts on January 30 which contained goods, including perfume and aftershave, valued €302. These were stolen from Boots. All of these items were recovered. Mr Reilly said that the defendant had €80 towards the cost of the
missing IPod and DVDS which were valued at €100 approximately. wHe expected to come up with the rest of the money. He explained that the defendant had fallen into bad company as a youth and had more or less kept on the straight and narrow until he went off the rails over the period of these offences.

Dundalk’s got pride By Niamh Kirk
Dundalk Outcomers will be hosting the third annual Pride Festival this July as a part of the international week of Pride events. The festival aims to acknowledge lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in the region, and recognises the important roles they play in the community. It also offers an opportunity for family and friends of the LGBT community in the north east to connect and to support an equal and inclusive society. The members of Dundalk Out-
comers have been organising this year’s Pride Festival for the past number of months and hope to see it build on the previous few years successes. There is a whole series of events organised from Thursday July 12 to Saturday July 14. The festival kicks off with the opening of the Art Exhibition ‘Community’ in the County Museum on Tuesday July 10 but will have its public launch on Thursday and will continue until July 21 and the admission to the exhibition is free. The weekend will be filled with quizzes and social gatherings which will lead to a busy day on Saturday July – Pride Day. The
annual celebration is being held in Dundalk Outcomers facility in Roden Place. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Urban Body and Soul’ and will have plenty of color, food, games, crafts and music. Again admission is free and the price of some of the events is minimal. It all culminates in the Pride Party which takes place in the Fairways Hotel, the event has grown year on year and with the continuation of the Urban Body and Soul theme should make for a spectacular event. It is an open event for the whole community and all are welcome to attend.

win in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, and Curator, Brian Walsh, was thrilled to have the sporting legend at the opening ceremony. “Ronnie Delany is the first name that comes to mind when you think about Ireland’s Olympic medallists. It was wonderful to speak to him when I was putting the exhibition together and it is a great honour for us that he agreed to open the exhi-

Dundalk Tidy Towns and Dundalk Photographic Society launched their outdoor exhibition of award winning photos in the Outdoor Art Centre (Francis Street – Park Street). Over 80 prize winning photos were submitted by members of the club to a panel of judges who chose the 34 entries of the exhibition. There was huge interest within the club to see whose photos were choosen as they did not know the selectd photos until it opened. The banners are positioned on the light poles and the organisers would strongly recommend people take time
out to stroll up Francis Street as far as the junction at Park Street/Demesne and then return back to St Patricks viewing the banners on the opposite side of the road. This project is part of the Tidy Towns Committee and Dundalk Town Council’s efforts to encourage people to the town centre and to ‘get out and walk for your health’. Dundalk economy boosted by start ups By Niamh Kirk
Thirteen tech start-ups have been given an extra helping hand by DkIT, DCU and Enterprise Ireland as they made it through to phase two of the New Frontiers programme. The new businesses cover a wide range of industries and are all have the promise to become leaders in their fields which span from gaming and social networking to medical devices, telecommunications and energy. The 13 were selected from a group of 28 who entered phase one. Enterprise Development Manager Garrett Duffy from DkIT said that there had been strong presence of entrepreneurs from Dundalk in the initial stages and some had made it through to the second round. And if they do, the rewards can be substantial. Garrett noted that “Since May 2011 this collaboration has seen
graduate companies receive offers of in excess of €2.5 million investment into their businesses. It is not only the companies that stand to make substantial gains and many of them are thought to have the potential to employ approximately 4 to 5 people each with some having the potential to expand even further – all adding to the North East emerging from the recession with a formidable tech-based local economy. Building wins award
Dundalk Institute of Technology acquired the PJ Carroll property adjacent to the campus in 2002 for €16 million. The factory itself, designed by Ronnie Tallon of Scott Tallon Walker in the late 1960’s, is a listed property of national and international significance and a major landmark building at the
southern entrance to Dundalk. The refurbished scheme has been designed by the original architects Scott Tallon Walker and includes many innovative architectural and special purpose design features. These include a substantial
emphasis on the use of renewable energy systems with, for example, the Institutes wind turbine being used to create ice banks at off peak times to reduce reliance on grid supplied electrical energy for air conditioning. Conor Lait from DKIT was understandably delighted to have received word of the award. “Obviously we were delighted to hear that our building here in DKIT has been recognised by such a prestigious organisation. We’re delighted as it demonstrates the idea that we had to refurbish the building rather than build it from scratch worked.” explained Conor. “The concept we originally had was to recycle an old cigarette company’s building into a state of the art education facility and I think we’ve achieved that” he added.
Two men charged with causing damage to the Carroll Shopping Centre were ordered to stay way from the centre. It was one of the conditions on which Damien Byrne and Kevin McKenna (34) were released on bail at Dundalk Court on Wednesday. They also must adhere to a night curfew and
sign on three times a week at Dundalk Garda Station. The pair, who also must reside at Carroll Village, are charged with damage to the back door of the shopping centre on June 16 last. They also are charged with thefts on the same day at the centre of two cash registers; value €1,000 at McCabe’s
Pharmacy, a large number of medical products and tablets, including Solpadeine and Nurofen along with €110 in coins at Wise Owl. They were remanded to July 25tand an order made to present their solicitors with statements in the case. McKenna was granted legal aid.
A refurbished building in Dundalk has won a prestigious award at a major architectural awards ceremony in London this week. At the Royal Institute of British Architects award ceremony, PJ Carroll’s factory in Dundalk was described as the rescue of “an important example of midcentury modernism and answers questions about how best and most economically we can reuse under-performing and outmoded structures, rather than building from scratch”.

W imieniu Organizacji i własnym gratuluje, i życzę powodzenia. Patryka” i wyraziła gotowość współpracy z naszą organizacją i wsparcia. With many of our readers anxious about their child going into preschool we have taken the liberty of asking and answering just a few of those important questions! This feature focuses on the Government’s provision of a year’s free preschooling for every child in the country. What is the free PreSchool Year in Early Childhood Care and Education? The ECCE programme is designed to give children access to a free pre-school year of ap-
propriate programmebased activities in the year before they start primary school. Participation in a preschool prog r a m m e provides children with their first formal experi-
ence of early learning, the starting-point of their educational and social development outside the home. Children who avail of preschool are more likely to be ready
for school and a formal learning and social environment. In general, each eligible child is entitled to one free preschool year. Certain children with special needs may avail of a pro-rata provision over two years, provided they fulfil certain conditions (please see the section ‘Children with special needs’ below.) When will my child be eligible to par ticipate in the ECCE programme? Childcare services participating in the programme are required to provide agea p p ro p r i a t e activities and programmes to children
within a particular age cohort, and therefore it is necessary to set minimum and maximum limits to the age range for qualifying children. The ECCE p ro g r a m m e is open to all children aged between 3 years 3 months and 4 years 6 months on 1st September each year. To avail of the programme at any stage during the preschool year commencing in September 2012, children must have been born between 2nd February 2008 and 30th June 2009 (both dates inclusive). How will the Pre-School Year be provided? Children will
normally receive preschool year sessions for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, over 38 weeks (September
to June). The weekly capitation fee for these sessions is €62.50. If you choose to enrol your child for few-
er than 5 days per week, the capitation fee payable to the provider will be reduced on a pro-rata basis.

Over to you Question: Who was to blame for Ireland’s Euro failure?
Maurice Kerley I don’t think it’s really fair to solely blame Trapattoni. The players just aren’t there at the moment and unfortunately there’s not too many coming through.
Brian Crilly
Peter Flynn
Alan Hartigan
I don’t really think it was anybody’s fault. At the end of the day some of the players are just too old. There’s not much the manager can do in fairness.
I’d have to blame Trap for the dismal performances me of the players in the Euros. Some of the players he brought to Poland should never have been picked. What was Paul Green doing there for instance?
I’d have to point the finger at the manager. Some of his decisions during the game were very strange and his selection policy was all over the place.
Local musicians in Crowne Plaza By Niamh Kirk Three of Dundalk’s finest musicians will take to the stage in the luxurious surroundings of the
Crowne Plaza hotel as part of Kilkerley woman Donna Bates’ fundraising efforts to reach Ghana where she will help impoverished communities during a ten day visit. John McIntyre, Zoe Conway and Stewart Agnew will showcase their considerable talents in what promises to be one of the gigs of the year on Friday July 6. Husband and wife duo Zoe and John have enthralled audiences all across Europe with their unique mix of Irish traditional, classical and jazz music. Zoe who has won ‘The Irish Traditional Musician of the year’ has played as guest soloist with renowned orchestras including The Irish Chamber Orchestra, The Ulster Orchestra, The RTE Concert Orchestra, Il Gardino Armonico of Italy, and The Symphony Orchestra of Galicia in Spain. John is a member of the well known rock band, The
Revs. He has toured worldwide with the band and has performed at international festivals including Oxygen, Slane, Reading and Rockpalast. As a result of playing with The Revs, John was voted “Best Musician of the Year” in a reader’s poll in Ireland’s Hotpress Magazine. Alongside his ‘rock n roll’ playing, John has a strong background in Irish Traditional music and has also studied classical guitar. As a result, he is increasingly in demand for guitar masterclasses and workshops. Stewart Agnew who recently released his acclaimed second album has been described as one of the best songwriters to come out of Ireland in recent years. His recent album ‘Hello Bright Spark’ produced the hit singles ‘Look How the Stars Turn On’ and ‘Show me where it hurts’ Tickets for this concert are available at a reduced price
“Welcome Here Again” Tour By Niamh Kirk It’s a night of uplifting fiddle and invigorating guitar as Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill take their “Welcome Here Again” tour to the Spirit Stores stage on Thursday June 28. The two men often begin with the simplest of melodies and builds upon it until the set has developed a palpable intensity. The venue has harvested a well earned reputation for amplifying the qualities of performing artists enveloping audiences by taking them on the journey the artist intended. The two men met in the US in the 1980s and forged a friendship and musical camaraderie that has taken them on tours around the US and Canada, Australia, China, Japan and throughout Europe. Martin is renowned for his exceptional talent and future orientated mindset when it comes to the musical tradition as he feels that Trad music is not just an insight into our history but in its modern form can be reflection of people’s lives. This night promises to be a celebration of Irish Music at its finest, guttural, lively, intense and refreshing.

Man told to pay compensation or face spell in jail
Patrick Stokes (42) of Villa Park, Greenacres, Dundalk, was warned that he would go to jail for as long as Judge Flan Brennan could impose. The judge agreed to adjourn to October 17 for him to come up with compensation resulting from a hit and run accident in October 2009. He made it clear he
would jail the defendant for 12 months or longer unless he had the money and he received a positive report on the next date. He gave the state liberty to re-enter the case in the intervening period and said if that happened the defendant could forget serving community service. The defendant hadn’t the compensa-
tion at Dundalk Court on Wednesday last. His solicitor Peter Lavery explained he had a number of bills from recently moving house but would be in receipt of money in the next couple of months. He was found suitable for community service which he wished to do, and asked for a further chance to come up with the money.

Knockbridge student holding fundraiser for Ghana trip Knockbridge nursing student Laura Cronin will host a ‘Waxathon’ night in Jackie Murphy’s on Saturday July 7 as she continues her quest to raise enough money to travel to Ghana as a medical brigade volunteer. Laura who has just finished her second year of a general nursing degree in DKIT must raise €1500 to get herself over to Ghana as part of the ‘Global Brigades’ charity. Founded ten years ago in America, Global Brigades has become the world’s largest student led development organisation. The Irish section of the organisation was founded last year by a DCU student and has expanded rapidly since. The fact that Global Brigades work so closely with the community they are helping was one of the main reasons this particular trip appealed to Laura. “The brigade that I’m travelling with is actually the very first medical brigade travelling from Ireland. I’ve chosen this brigade as it allows me to

put the skills and knowledge that I’ve learned so far in my nursing career to practical use.” This particular project appealed to me because all the brigades are run in partnership with the community members and are designed to allow for their sustainability once we leave” explains Laura. However, in order to reach Ghana Laura must first raise €1500. For her main fundraising event Laura has persuaded ten brave men to take part in a “Charity Waxathon” in Jackie Murphy’s bar in Dundalk. The night will kick off
at 8pm with live music by local musician, Sinead McNally. Throughout the night DJ Peter Carroll is going to get everybody up on the dancefloor and there will also be a raffle on the night with some fantastic spot prizes and plenty of food to nibble on. Everybody is welcome to attend Laura’s fundraising evening. Tickets cost €10 and are available from Dundalk FM, Jackie Murphy’s, New Faces or through Laura herself at Icron10@student.dkit.ie or 0872454567. Anybody who cannot attend the evening and
would like to help Laura reach her target of €1500 can make a donation through her AIB bank account. Sort Code: 9324-50. Account Number: 36836216.
