Dundalk got the league as the town was thumbs up in the litter found to be clean to European norms. Out of 43 towns surveyed Dundalk ranked 30, down one place from last year’s position at 29. The surveyors described it as a good result for Dundalk noting that the result was similar to that of 2011 and that other towns by comparison were getting cleaner. It was a score card of As and Bs for the specific areas surveyed. Six of the ten sites in Dundalk that were surveyed were
moderately littered with the other four receiving top marks. There were no seriously littered sites in Dundalk. The Clanbrassil Street area got a ‘B’ grade but credited the local authorities for the ‘fresh and clean in appearance’ – they cited the “attractive paving, ornamental trees, seating area, fresh bins (with the opportunity to separate street litter) as positives. But went on to say “this was combined with an older and greyer streetscape
where the laneway at the northern end was poorly maintained – a more thorough approach to cleaning is required at this stretch.” Concerns regarding the impact of approach roads on tourists were a concern for many areas, but not Dundalk as the The Carrickmacross Approach Road was the only approach road in the country to get an A grade. The residential areas along the Dublin Road as far as the Fairways
Hotel were applauded for appearance and individual residents were credited for their contribution to the upkeep of the areas DkIT and Dundalk Grammar School also scored A grades. IBAL found that Clarke Station’s overall presentation was good noting in particular Tourist Information, bins, paving, platforms being positive but said it was let down by a scattering of of litter – despite plenty of litter bins throughout. Meteorite could have landed in your garden Space Rock could be lying in your back garden according to Astronomy Ireland. On Monday night last at around 11pm people across the east coast spotted a huge meteor blaze accross the sky before bursting into smaller fragments. Exceptionally big meteors are known are fireballs and can give out as much energy as an atomic bomb. They can appear to be
close they are usually shooting across the sky at an altitude of about 70km. Once the asteroid or meteor breaks apart, the fragment fall to earth, with some potentially falling along the east coast. In 1999, Astronomy Ireland determined that a meteorite landed in the midlands. The search for fragments began and parts of the fireball were
found, fetching a price 50 times greater than gold when they were sold. Astronomy Ireland are again saying that the possibility that similar fragments lie unfound on Irish soil following Monday night’s event is high. To determine the location they ask that people who saw the Fireball to report the details on astronomy.ie/fireball.

day in how we deliver fire and rescue services in Louth and comes after lengthy planning and negotiation following an international review commissioned in late 2008. “The new model for service delivery offers the most comprehensive cover possible at times
of greatest demand and is based on a detailed analysis of callout patterns. This is also balanced with the resource constraints we face in the current economic climate and the need to deliver efficiencies and value-for-money”, added Mr McGuinness. Eamon Woulfe, Chief
Fire Officer, Louth, also welcomed the change. “With an increased focus on fire prevention, it is also a real positive of the new working arrangements for our fire officers that they allow for greater time to be spent on community fire safety programmes”, he said.

Mother who stole for kids is approved for state aid
The 29-year-old Latvian woman who has admitted to shoplifting to take care of her children has been approved for child benefit and also job seekers allowance. Mother of five Guna Levcenkova with an address at Beechmount Drive, Dundalk faces 12 counts of larceny between July 2010 and January last involving thefts of food and clothes from stores in Dundalk and Drogheda. She has made several appearances before Dundalk Court which heard at the start of the month she received nothing from the state and was awaiting the outcome of appeals for state aid. Her solicitor
Sean T. O’Reilly also said she had no desire to engage in shoplifting. However, she admitted since her previous appearance she was stopped five times by shopkeepers. They appeared to be aware of her circumstances and simply took the goods off her and didn’t notify the Gardai, he said. She had an ESB bill of over €1,215 and owed approximately €900 rent to her landlord. She had gained seasonal employment and attempted to pay her landlord with the wages she obtained in the legal or black economy. Local people and members of the local Latvian and Lithuanian community provid-
ed her with assistance for which she was grateful, Mr. O’Reilly said. At Thursday’s holiday sitting, Judge William Hamill was told that her application for child benefit was successful, and she was approved for job seekers allowance. Both would be payable next week. A final adjournment was sought to clarify arrears and compensation which had to be worked out. Progress on these matters could be made on the next date. Inspector Martin Beggy said that he would be able to provide the amount of loss involved. Judge William Hamill adjourned the charges to October 25. A race day in honour of the security and emergency services took place at Dundalk Stadium Sunday. The event featured an eight race horse card in the afternoon alongside displays by personnel from the security and emergency services such as the Gardai, Coastguard, Army, Search & Rescue with vintage and present day vehicles and kids activities throughout the race day. Call for school children to take part in MS readathon MS Ireland is calling schools in County Louth to sign up for the 25th MS READaTHON. It was 25 years ago that the amazing Roald Dahl launched the first MS READaTHON. The author of well loved stories such as ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, ‘BFG’ and ‘The Witches’ gave
his support to what has now become the biggest schools based reading initiative. Since then, more than 350,000 children have read many millions of books to raise funds for people with MS in Ireland. MS Ireland is contacting schools from the beginning of September
with information brochures and entry forms. The 25th MS READaTHON reading period will take place for one month from October 12 to November 12. The Society is also taking the opportunity to thank the students in local schools for their excellent support last year, along with their
principals, teachers and parents. In 2011, more than 21,000 students in 625 primary and secondary schools across the country took part, reading more than half a million books and raising over €730,000 for vital services and support to people with MS.
Moran hits out at HSE cuts Senator Mary Moran met with INMO Industrial Relations Officer Tony Fitzpatrick and HSE officials last Friday as the fallout from the government’s proposed €130 million in cuts to the health service rumbles on. Senator Moran said the meeting had been productive while again expressing her disappointment with Minister James Reilly’s handling of the situation. “We had a productive meeting and I got to hear in detail Tony Fitzpatrick’s concerns and what these cuts
would mean for the doctors and nurses working in the hospitals “I listened to the INMO’s concerns and I intend on voicing these concerns back to party headquarters. “I was disappointed with Minister Reilly’s announcement and I was very happy to hear the Labour Court Commission announce that staffing levels prior to September 1 in critical areas of the Louth/Meath area will be maintained for a further two weeks to allow for further negotiations”, added Senator
Moran. Fine Fail and Sinn Fein both declared this week that they will table a vote of no confidence in the health minister Dr James Reilly after a range of cost cutting measures were announced including a reduction of at least 50% of all agency staff as well as a ban on all overtime in all professions except NCHD’s. Further meetings were due to take place yesterday between cabinet officials as the government returned to work after their summer break.

town.” explained the Fine Gael Councillor. Last month it was confirmed that there would be changes to the original work at Jocelyn St and Chapel St after a review from Dundalk Town Council, the National Transport Authority (NRA) and a team of consultant engineers As a result, road markings will be added, traf-
fic signals will operate and the road will be widened to allow lorries and emergency vehicles down Chapel Street. The cost of this extra work was one of the questions that Cllr Doyle hoped to find out during last night’s meeting. “I plan on asking Catherine Duff (Town engineer and project manager for Dundalk’s Smarter
Travel Scheme) what extra costs will be incurred due to this latest review of the cycle lanes. “To be honest I’m not too sure we’ve got value for money with the work done so far. There are issues with large vehicles unable to drive down Chapel St and I’ve been told of people falling at the new footpath on Jocelyn St so I’d be hoping to get some information about plans to improve these areas.” added Cllr Doyle. “Basically we are looking for clarity on what changes are recommended and who is going to foot the bill for the extra work which needs to be done to make the junctions safe for drivers and pedestrians”

are a gospel singer, Amateur Antics would like to hear from you for a particular act”, explained Catherine. Auditions and Registration for the show will be held on Saturday September 15 upstairs at McGeoughs Bar, Roden Place from 1.30pm to 5.30pm. Are you happy to be back at school?
I’m happy to be back at school because I’ve just started first year and it’s kind of new and exciting. It’s like a new adventure.

I’m happy to be back at school. I’m back a week now and it’s good catching up with all my school-friends again.
I don’t mind being back. I enjoyed my summer holidays but I was starting to get bored and it’s good to be back and seeing everybody again.
I’m pretty happy to be back at school. I don’t mind school too much and I like hanging out with my friends every day.
I am actually. It’s good to have something to concentrate on and I was starting to get bored at home after the summer holidays.

We love our pets more than ever. They are no longer just a diversion. In fact, they have become like children in the home for many people.
There is no doubt that our pets have become a major part of our lives as they entertain us, make us laugh, and love us unconditionally. There are many
ways to show your pet how much you appreciate them, and here are just a few ideas as to how you can get the most out of your time you’re your pet.
Spend quality time with them by going for a walk, hanging out in the back yard, playing games with their favourite toys, or snuggling with them as you watch TV. Always get them immediate veterinary care if you suspect that some-
thing is wrong. If you don’t have a solid relationship with your veterinarian, work on that for the sake of your pet. In this time of managed human health care, your pets often get better, more consistent, individualised care than we do. A respected veterinarian is your greatest ally. Feed them healthy food intended for their consumption rather than snacks or fatty human foods. Protect them from home hazards and from extremes of weather. They cannot protect themselves. Much of being a responsible pet owner is understanding what your pet needs and also being
Dundalk Leader 5th September 2012
aware of what your responsibilities are to the community. Following are some basic rules for pet care: Learn about your pet’s special needs - dietary, health, housing and general care; Provide your pet with an adequate balanced diet and ensure it has access to clean, cool drinking water at all times; Regularly exercise your pet according to its needs; Train your pet using kindness and positive reinforcement; Provide appropriate housing and location for your pet; Whilst unsupervised, keep your pet safely and securely confined to
your property at all times; To minimise boredom, provide your pet with sufficient companionship and a stimulating environment; Protect your pet’s health by taking it to a vet whenever health problems arise and by ensuring all necessary vaccinations and treatments are up-to-date; To help prevent disease and illness, ensure your pet has a clean environment; Microchip your pet (where appropriate) and where required register it with your local council to increase the likelihood of return when lost; If your pet requires grooming, do so on a regular basis;
Many pets need to be socialised with other animals and people, particularly at a young age - give your pet appropriate opportunities for mixing with others; Teach your family, friends and children how to interact with your pet; Find suitable boarding facilities for your pet whilst on holidays; Respect the rights of non pet owners by keeping your pet under control while in public and by disposing of any droppings made in public areas; Provide your pet with love and attention and commit to caring for it for its entire life.

Bell X1 to perform in Spirit Store As the renovations continue in the Spirit Store excitement is growing around the venue as they announce that Irish pop rockers Bell X-1 are to play on December 15. The band who recently released their seventh album Field Recordings, are taking their acoustic tour to the US this September and Europe in early 2013. But they will return to Ireland before to finish their tour in what will be a newly renovated venue. The band’s popularity is as strong as ever hav-
and preventing of teen suicide. The young people of MAD YT has launched a survey early this August to find out what the general public thinks and know about the issue. 60% of the people who took the survey said they will seek advice from a professional if they suspect a friend or family who may be suicidal. The survey also uncovered that 100% of the people who took this survey mention that “talking” helps. A part of prevention is promoting positive men-
tal health, so MAD YT is setting up in the Marshes Shopping Centre on Saturday September 8 with a photo booth. They want people to come and take fun photos to show what a picture of happiness looks like. On September 14 they are inviting everyone to come down to GF Dundalk for a 100 Red Balloons release as part of Suicide Awareness Week. M.A.D YT is putting on a production of Chatroom by Enda Walsh on the 24 to 27 of October and it’s promised to shake things up.
ing recently performed to a packed tent at the Electric Picnic and the recent offering which was released in July being met with much acclaim. The new album is a recording of live version of songs from the bands five studio albums from their 2010 Global Acoustic Tour. Tickets go on sale this Gareth and Gerard Doherty at the Dundalk FC U-19 game in Oriel Park Friday September 7 online and from the Spirit Store but they can go very quickly so get in early and don’t be disappointed.

Labour Senator and Mary Moran hs hit out at the disappointing coverage of the Paralympics by RTE. “While RTE’s live coverage of the games in London in August, and in particular the attention surrounding Katie Taylor’s outstanding boxing performances gave the country a very welcome
boost, I am disappointed that the same cannot be said of the coverage for the Paralympic games.” “Indeed coverage of our national performances in the games over the weekend, which saw Ireland secure three gold medals in three hours on Saturday was limited to half an hour’s highlights and was televised late at
night. “Similar sporadic coverage is due to be aired during the week with RTE 2 showing only a half an hour’s highlights of the games in the evening and indeed no coverage of the games by RTE is scheduled at all for either Tuesday or Thursday”, she said. The Labour senator
was loud in her praise of the athletes who took part and those who won medals. “It is fantastic to see our National Paralympic team perform so well, winning four gold three silver and a team bronze over the weekend and securing a top 10 place in the overall medal table for the games.

letter to the editor
Let your child walk to school Dear editor,
Vital stage of year for cricket club Action from one of Dundalk’s recent games
The recent spell of good weather has allowed Dundalk Cricket Club to get back on track after a season punctured with abandoned and postponed games. And it looks like it will be a exciting finish to the season for the club’s two teams as one of the teams is sitting at the top of the Division 9 Table having won six of their last 12 games, four of which had no result. The team beat Terenure by nine wickets having won the toss and started bowling. The win propelled the first team to the top of the table and with only one match left against Mullingar on September 15 at home they look set to be
promoted at the end of the season once again. Dundalk’s recently formed second team are stuggling in their debut season at the bottom on Division 12. But, with three fixtures left, a win in any one of them could see the second team hold position and stay up. The team have found their fighting spirit and posted an impressive 97 run win over Merrion 7 on Sunday. The next fixture for Dundalk in Division 12 is Saturday September 8 and both teams are in action on September 15 at the Dromiskin club grounds.
Now is time to update your skills
The summer is coming to a close and the kids are preparing to return to school. Now is the time to consider updating your skills or learning new ones. Co Louth VEC night class Programme offer over 170 classes across four centres in Louth. The details on all these classes are on the website www. louthnightclasses.ie. While the VEC continue to offer the ever popular classes in our programmes they have also added new ones for you to consider. There is an increasing emphasis on areas that may benefit those who are seeking new skills for the workplace. Examples of these include the following: Diploma in Event Management, Manual Handling, Vehicle Diagnostics and Fault Finding and Cake decorating. Fetac level 5 and 6 modules and Awards are now becoming essential qualifications for many areas of work including Childcare, Healthcare and Business. To facilitate this there is a comprehensive list of Fetac modules both in Drogheda and
Dundalk. Be aware that some Fetac Awards are undergoing major changes at the moment. There have been developments in the way we are now offering Fetac modules. After a very successful pilot programme in O Fiaich Institute undertaken in Spring 2012 the VEC are now offering modules in Childcare and Healthcare using a blended learning format. This is essentially undertaking modules using a combination of face- to- face classroom and tuition and webbased learning. This allows you to undertake modules while only having to travel to class every three weeks. Finally it is easy to get carried away with all the classes on offer that are work related. Now more than ever is a great time to learn a new hobby or update an old one. Louthnightclasses. ie offers a broad range of such classes so please check them out. Just to remind you that there is 20% refund for those who are in receipt of Social welfare.
The fumes from car exhausts have been linked to lung cancer, asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), hindered lung development, post neonatal death, low birth weight, and the aggravation of symptoms in cystic fibrosis. Every morning, the highest concentration of cars can be found around our schools. This brought the question to my mind: are we poisoning our own children? Every kilometre we travel, our cars on average pump 150g pollution into the air. That’s a lot of gunk. None of us would dream of blowing that directly into our kids’ faces, but
it doesn’t occur to us that this is exactly what we’re doing. We congregate in our cars around schools, causing high concentrations of poisonous gases in the air our children then breathe for the next few hours. If our children can walk as little as the last kilometre to school, if we can drop them at parking areas away from the school buildings, it’s entirely possible that the maddening traffic jams we face two or three times a day at present will be a thing of the past. Imagine how much cleaner the air will be that they are immersed in most of the day. Does your child have allergies? Asthma? Chances are, we can all help to alleviate their suffering by showing we care, and letting them walk part of the way to school. Yours, Nadia Williams Dundalk Cycling Alliance.
W minion? sobot? obchodzili?my 73 rocznice rozpocz?cia II Wojny ?wiatowej. Pomy?la?am, ?e warto przypomniec sobie szkolne apele z pierwszego dnia rozpocz?cia szko?y. Bo gdy byli?my mali i stali?my na boiskach szkolnych po wakacjach, nie do ko?ca zdawali?my sobie spraw? z ogromu tragedii jaki rozpocz?? si? dla naszego kraju, ale i ca?ej Europy oraz pozosta?ych krajów spoza naszego kontynentu, w?asnie 1 wrze?nia 1939 roku. W sobot? jecha?am do Dublina, do przyjació?. By?o s?onecznie choc nieco wietrznie i pomy?la?am o moim pradziadku, który by? nieco m?odszy ode mnie w 39-tym, mia? ?on? i dwoje dzieci gdy zaskoczy?a ich II wojna ?wiatowa. ?yciem. Moja babcia, we wrze?niu 1939 roku mia?a 7 lat, ich gospodarstwo zaj?li niemieccy ?o?nierze, a ona nie widzia?a swoich rodziców, brata i najm?odszej siostry przez kolejne 4 lata, gdy? rozdzielono ich i wys?ano w ró?ne miejsca, z najbli?szej rodziny zosta?a jej tylko 3letnie siostra, któr? musia?a si? zaopiekowac. Im si? uda?o, po wojnie
odzyskali gospodarstwo, odnale?li si? i przede wszystkim prze?yli. 1 wrze?nia 1939. Ataki by?y przeprowadzone przez bombowce nurkuj?ce typu Ju 87B, jest ono przywo?ywane jako przyk?ad bestialstwa i nieuzasadnionego terroru niemieckiego lotnictwa[1]. Nalot
Jestem pewna, ?e w Waszych rodzinach te? cz?sto s?yszeli?cie takie wojenne historie. Cieszy mnie fakt, ?e wci?? ta tematyka jest obecna w polskiej tv i kinie, ?e mo?emy ?ledzic losy bohaterów serialu “czas honoru” to troch? jak ?ledziliby?my losy bohaterów Armii Krajowej. Cieszy mnie kontynuacja filmowa serialu “Stawka wi?ksza ni? Pozdrawiam - Agnieszka Boniewicz.
