Newlyweds land in New York hurricane By Niamh Kirk A local couple had a honeymoon they are certain never to forget after finding themselves in the middle of Hurricane Sandy. Mark and Paula Dowdall went to the US on their honeymoon and were in New York when the Hurricane hit. The newly weds had begun their trip with a cruise around the Caribbean Islands but were forced to divert to Mexico when it became too dangerous to travel to Jamaica. Fortunately for Mark and Paula, flights to New York were still operating but for the last hour and half, as they got closer to New York, the turbulence got so bad that all on flight services had to be stopped. They were among the last flights to be allowed to en-
ter the city. The couple were among the lucky ones travelling to New York as they were staying in a mid town hotel. When they arrived, staff at the hotel congratulated them on making it and advised them not to go far. “At first it was really just like a bad day in Ireland, rain and quite windy,” said Paula. She and her husband Mark walked to Times Square only to find it deserted. “There were a few NYPD cars and taxis in the area. Usually you can’t move on the streets of New York. But it was like ghost town. It was really very eerie.” That night Sandy hit, devastating downtown New York before wreaking havoc as it moved inland. Paula and Mark stayed in the hotel largely sheltered from the

Swift action needed to deal with bullying By Niamh Kirk
Louth County VEC has called on all of its centres to begin a ‘root and branch’ review of their approaches to bullying as there are concerns that the traditional methods of tackling it may not suit the virtual environment. The call from the VEC came in response to the death by suicide of two school girls in the West who had been subject to online taunts. Dr Kirk CEO of Louth VEC described cyber bullying as “an old problem in a new guise” – it has always been one of the most challenging issues for schools. While VEC schools are satisfied they have made the effort to develop skills and strategies to prevent and counter bullying, traditional methods of dealing with the ‘blight among students’ may not be enough. Dr Kirk told the schools that they should take “very swift action to eradicate it wherever they can”. He said “Traditonal methods of dealing with bullying might not suit this new virtual environment and so it is important that all schools cyber-proof their approaches to dealing with it.” However it is not just schools that can help the effort to tackling the cru-
elty young people can dispense to each other. Parents can contribute by teaching students empathy and respect for differences, they can also encourage their children not to respond to cyber bullying attacks and to speak to a trusted adult. VEC said that he was concerned with the increase in incidents involving cyber bullying nationally and asked teachers, parents and other adults in authority to be aware of the tell-tale signs of being bullied. Bullying is the repeated aggression whether verbal psychological or physical. Cyber bullying refers to the largely psychological attacks that take the form of threatening, cruel or insulting emails, text messages, photos, comments posted on social networks, chatrooms or message board and can be a part of a wider pattern of traditional bulling. Dr Kirk said that everything possible is being done to contain the blight of bullying among students. In a letter to schools he wrote that it was the duty of educators to be alert to the signs and dangers of bullying in all its forms and encouraged those involved in the school to reflect on the stratagies they have in place to deal with this serious matter.

Ireland’s Largest Laser Eye Surgery Clinic arrives in Newry
Since its introduction, laser eye surgery has helped to improve the vision and lifestyles of over 30 million people worldwide, including high profile celebrities and sportspeople including Nicole Kidman, Brad Pitt and Tiger Woods. It’s never been easier or more affordable to say goodbye to cumbersome glasses and contact lenses with the arrival of Optilase to Newry. Optilase is the leading laser eye clinic and offers access to the best Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons, Laser Optometrists and medical staff, in the world. Their experienced team of surgeons has carried out over 40,000 laser eye surgery procedures and the results speak for themselves 100% of patients have achieved driving standard or better, with 98.7% achieving 20/20 or better. Optilase uses only the safest, most precise and most advanced technology in the world. Lead Surgeon and Medical Director at Optilase, Mr Wayne Crewe-Brown added “Candidates are always so surprised at how straight forward, speedy and painless the procedure actually is. Having been involved in laser vision correction for over 20 years and having performed in the region of 30,000 laser eye procedures, I can comfortably say that the field has reached a zenith of safety and predictability”.
The actual procedure takes about 5-10 minutes per eye and the majority of Optilase patients return to work within 48 hours, with many returning even sooner than that. With prices from only £295 per eye, free consultations and interest free credit, it is easy to understand the 99.8% referral rate.
“Freedom from glasses and contact lenses is an absolute life-changer. The first thing that most people tell me is that they wished they had done it sooner” NO MORE READING GLASSES
Optilase has recently introduced a pioneering new surgery to Northern Ireland called Kamra vision to eliminate the need for reading glasses for the over 40s suffering from presbyopia, the technical term for the loss of crispness of our near vision, as we get older. Presbyopia is a natural process that happens to everyone, even those who have previously had laser vision correction. If you find yourself holding this article at arm’s length to read more clearly, then you will understand. Reading menus, price tags and texting are equally tricky, without the
aid of reading glasses. Optilase carry out the most treatments and are also the most experienced in Europe and beyond. Dr Wayne Crewe Brown commented: “KAMRA Vision has been in development for over a decade and means life-changing benefits for those who are dependent on reading glasses. It restores vision of objects near the eye and reduces dependency on reading glasses, critically without compromising on distance vision. The result is long-lasting, clear vision; near, far and in between.”
“The lens in our eyes loses its flexibility over time. This means the ability to focus on near objects gradually decreases. Typically between the ages of 40 and 50 we will find it harder to focus on near objects.”
The actual procedure is painless and takes, on average, less than 10 minutes. Patients can resume most activities the very next day, free of the dependency on reading glasses. Why not book a free consultation to find out if you are a suitable candidate for either of these life-changing surgeries, contact Optilase, Newry on 02890 438397
Benefits of the Kamra treatment Restores everyday vision and eliminates the need for reading glasses Smaller than a contact lens, weighs less than a grain of salt Takes on average less than 10 minutes Works continuously for constant, long-term near vision rejuvenation Proven, with a decade of clinical research and development Free consultation

The October meeting of Dundalk Town Council was a very pink affair as the local councillors donned the colour to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Cathaoirleach Cllr Jennifer Green said “one in 10 women in Ireland will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. Breast cancer affects our mothers, sisters, friends and loved ones and the first start is detection. Women should know how their breasts normally feel and look and report any new breast changes to a family doctor as soon as they are found out”. For ladies aged 50 to 64 there is a BreastCheck funded by the Government which provides breast screening and a mammogram on an area-by-area basis every two years. The aim of BreastCheck is to reduce deaths from breast cancer by finding and treating the disease at an early stage. BreastCheck encourages all women who receive an invitation to attend their appointment. Women who have any concerns about their appointment can contact BreastCheck on Freephone 1800 45 45 55.

The Gathering Local Enrolment for new Irish school next September Community Fund
Louth County Council is encouraging people to get involved in the Gathering as the community fund for the unique project has been launched. The fund was set up to provide organisers of events for the historic event with support and it is being administered by the Local authorities.
Funding of between €500 and €2,500 is available but will be directly influenced by the number of overseas visitors that will be delivered. For every ten visitors, €500 could be given to support an event. The fund is open to any groups or organisations and the event can be in associa-
tion with events that have already been planned or a new idea that will add to the calendar. Funding is limited and applications will be competitive as there is no guarantee that meeting the criteria will secure the support. Priority will also be given to Gatherings
which have emerged from the Gathering Ireland Community Meeting process. Some events have already been added to the Gathering for 2013 with 29 events added to the line up for the year including Vantastival Festival in Bellurgan Park on the bill as well as the Blackrock seaside Festival.
Seven Louth projects awarded €35k fund
Seven projects have been awarded €35k between them as a part of the Peace of Art programme. The projects which deal with the theme of sectarianism, racism and peace building will all take place in Co Louth. Among the recipients are the Creative Spark, Muirhevnamor, Music Generation Louth and local artists Zoe Conway and Laurence Mc Keown. Displaced people, political prisoners and ethnic minorities are just some of the PEACE III target
groups that will be directly involved in these seven innovative projects. Over the coming weeks each of the projects will engage with their respective communities to implement their projects in a way that unites both peace building processes and art. Co. Louth VEC intends to make a second call for proposals to the ‘Peace of Art’ project in December for projects that will run in 2013. Further details will be made available in December 2012.

Coláiste Lú, the new all-Irish post-primary school for Co. Louth, is set to open its doors for the first time next September. Enrolment for the new school has begun for the first year but Dr Kirk of Louth VEC says that they plan to start small and expand. “I envisage no more than two small first year groups commencing next September” said Dr Kirk. The teaching staff of the school will soon embark on a campaign to attract students to Colaiste Lu and will visit other schools in the region delivering prospectuses. The school building will be in the newly acquired VEC building, formerly the ESB Offices, on Chapel Street. Dr. Kirk said, “our new building is currently undergoing restoration and refurbishment work and will be used as the start-up accommodation for our new all-Irish school. This building has the same foot-print as a 250 pupil school with

that parents and students alike will be very impressed when the school opens its doors for its first open day early next year”. A principal will be appointed to Coláiste Lú early in 2013. As the
school grows it is envisaged that it will relocate to a new site. An information evening for parents and students will be held before Christmas, while an open evening will take place in January 2013.

By Paul Byrne
Onwards and upwards is the message coming out of Dundalk FC following their hard fought victory over Waterford in the promotion/relegation play-off at the Waterford RSC on Friday night. The Lilywhites finished off a troubled season with a magnificent 2-0 victory in Waterford thanks to two superbly taken Michael Rafter goals. There were scenes of jubilation on the pitch after the final whistle was blown as players management and supporters celebrated a hugely important victory. With the Dundalk FC Trust and Fastfix taking control of the club in the next few weeks it was seen as crucial that this new era for the club began in the top league. Dundalk Trust’s chairman Simon Blackmore admits he wasn’t overly confident ahead

of the second leg in Waterford but was delighted with how the game panned out. “I was very nervous ahead of the second leg as we only drew at home and we haven’t been playing that well. But the players responded brilliantly to the challenge and thankfully we will be playing in the premier division next season. “It’s been a really difficult season and I think it was crucial
that we ended it on such a positive note” explained Simon. “The club needs to kick on from here now and we need to galvanise people together to help get this club going forward again. “It’s onwards and upwards from here on in and hopefully next season people will come out and support their local club and ensure Dundalk FC gets back to where they belong”
In a season where the clubs very existence was in danger supporters rallied around to help save the club by launching a number of fundraisers. In an open letter to the clubs supporters Dundalk FC thanked everybody for their contributions dur-s c ing the season. “This season the club hasw benefited from the work ofi many volunteers who havew helped the club survive a veryo dark and difficult period. Ourc survival is dedicated to all ofu you who helped organise andb supported the many fundraisersJ t held throughout the year. “Most of all, we would like tot thank all the loyal Dundalk FC supporters who stuck with thel team through thick and thin de-a spite a very poor season. Tara creates history in Vienna From page 1 “I auditioned for this contract four years ago and I was thrilled when I heard I’d been chosen for it. It was a wonderful experience and I enjoyed every second of it. Of course, the last night was extra special with all of my Dundalk support in the house! Tara who sang for years with the Marist choir in Dundalk thanked her Dundalk teacher who she says was a huge help to her in her formative years. “Dundalk is home to one of the world’s most incredible teachers, Geraldine Magee. I began to study with Geraldine, aged 10 through 17. “Geraldine was a huge help and incredible influence, she instilled in me, the importance of a good performance, a standard I still work by today. Geraldine sent me to Dr.Veronica
Dunne at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin when I was 17. And it’s all kicked off from there really” added Tara. Geraldines was one of a group from the Marist Choir who travelled over to see Tara perform. Tara graduated from the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. C In a statement, Walelace said that since his -appointment on 1 October, 2012, he had been dactively looking for a hpurchaser of the busigness; however, none had remerged from this process, which resulted in JJB’s closure. FROM AN UNBELIEVABLE The closure of JJB has been announced
based in Dundalk, Limerick, Blanchardstown and Liffey Valley. 101 people were employed between the four outlets. Staff at the shops and leisure centres were informed last Wednesday of the decision to close the doors to the gym and retail store for the final time. Members of the leisure centres who
have paid their fees in advance are now creditors of the business. The British company has been struggling for some time and last month 2,200 UK staff at JJB Sports were made redundant when the administrator closed 133 stores and sold the remaining 20 to rival Sports Direct Interna-
tional. The liquidator has asked that any members submit a claim for money due to them by the end of November. Dundalk Institute of Technology hope to purchase the Dundalk premises and include it in their joint project with the GAA for a new stadium for Louth.

Dundalk Leader 7th November 2012 Irish night for Haiti Volunteer
John Dooley of Ravensdale with his supporters and friends of Haiti will gather In Kelly’s Bar Anne Street on Saturday night for an Irish night as John prepares to make his third trip to build houses in Haiti with the Haven Irish Charity. John has gone out every year since the earthquake in 2010 and once again that country is visited by disaster as Hurricane Sandy claimed another 50 lives just weeks ago. The Dundalk area has sent many volunteers to Haiti house building projects and each Haven volunteer needs to Raise €4500. Haven will again join with Habitat for Humanity and Jimmy Carter Foundation workers on a house building project at Legones on the outskirts of Port Au Prince, the epicentre of the 2010 earthquake.
Festival of Light to hit local streets By Niamh Kirk
Dundalk is set to be transformed into an illuminated wonderland this November as the first Festival of Light and Culture takes place. On a cold Winter’s night this November 16, the streets of Dundalk will emit wonderous glow as people take to the streets, lanterns in hand, in what should be an amazing display of light and colour. The Taín Chariot followed by a procession of Celtic warriors will begin a parade that will begin at the Longwalk Shopping Centre and wind through the streets with the light of Old Ireland in hand.
The event will have a distinctly local flair as local youth groups, choirs, Irish Traditional music groups, Scout groups and Brownies will be taking part in the lantern lit procession and all the live music on the night will come from the areas excellent stock of musicians. As the spectral procession comes to an end the celestial voices of the Setanta Choir will raise the curtain on a night of music in Dundalk’s town centre. The areas cultural highlights will be celebrated with a line-up of music and events that includes the Setanta Choir, Sinead McNally, Long Riders, Ceoil Kilkerley, Black Tie, Manifesto and Roisin
Kilkerley car boot sale
Kilkerley Community and Enterprise Centre are holding a car boot sale on November 18 to send young people from North Louth away on trips. The event is being run to help two different organisations in the area, the first the Kilkerley Foroige who are hoping to send their members for a night in Carlingford Adventure Centre. The proceeds are also going to help send a number of people further afield. The sale will make the beginning of the build-up to Brazil for ten young Louth locals who are travelling there next summer to help build homes. The group will spend the next ten months raising funds, not only for travel to where they plan to work but also for the raw materials they will be working with. They are travelling in July to Caritas on what is primarily a house building project. They will spend nearly one month digging foundations, mixing cement and bricklaying in order to relieve some of those living in poverty in the region. After their stint building, they will travel to Rio to take part in World Youth Day, a congregation of more than 1 million young catholic which takes place every three years.
Matthews to name just a few. Youngsters will have plenty to do to keep the cold at bay with a host of activities including fun fair rides and bouncy castles, a rodeo and climbing wall as well as visits from some of their favourite cartoon characters. The town centre will be energised with the first form of news reporter, a Town Crier, making public pronouncements, dazzling fire eaters, the habits of monks, a hop on train and much more bringing the heart of Dundalk to life. The night will culminate in a crescendo of light, colour and Christmas magic as the Marshes Shopping centre welcomes Santa Clause with a fireworks display.

Students make Budget stance Local student and parents are taking to the streets next week to encourage their local TDs and Senators to stand up for students, families and local business who stand to suffer if college fees go up in December’s budget. Fifteen days of protests have been organised in towns and cities across Ireland for the month leading up to the announcement of Budget 2013. Students will
march on the constituency offices of TDs who have been selected by USI because of previously held stances on education funding and/or because they have a third level institution in their constituency. Minister for Education and Skills Ruairi Quinn has indicated that college fees will increase by a further €250 this year and every year until 2015, when they will be €3,000. Also cuts to
grants, on which around half of all students both from and attending college in Louth rely on have not yet been ruled out. The USI president, John Logue, said that the message at the protests will be clear “We’re fed up of fee hikes, grant cuts and graduate unemployment. Stand up for us and for promises made to a generation of Ireland’s youth.” He described the back
tracking of the Labour Party on the pledge to students as a “staggering betrayal of voters” and called on other Labour members to break ranks and stand up to Minister Ruruai Quinn for students. The DkIT Students Union estimates that around €8.5 million will be taken out of the local economy if the cuts and fee hikes go ahead. The Dundalk protest is expected on November 13.
BBC make visit to age-friendly centre
Louth’s age-friendly Living Lab was visited by BBC’s Newsline team last week as interest in what is currently one of the most advanced facilities for age-related product and service research in Europe increases. The team at CASALA work very closely with the residents in Barrack Street, who were happy to talk to the BBC about how technology has influenced and changed their lives. The key aim of the ongoing research within the Great Northern Haven apartments is to enable people to
live independently in their homes for as long as possible as they get older. Two residents in particular, Sean Farrell and Paddy Byrne, spoke at length about how iPads have become an integral part of their lives.

Setanta Christmas concert moves to Marist Church In the run up to Christmas, Setanta will be performing at ‘The Night of Lights’ at the Square on November 16, The Carlingford Choral Festival on November 30 and The Marshes Shopping Centre on November 22 as well as rehearsing for their performance of Karl Jenkins The Peacemak-
ers in May 2013. All those who look forward to their Christmas choral “fix” this year need to take note of a big change for this year’s concert. When the choir discovered that An Tain Theatre at the Town Hall was not available on any of their preferred dates there was much con-
cern among the members. Fortunately, the Marist Fathers came up with an invitation to use their church, and the concert proceeds will be shared with the Marist Fathers Mission Fund. The concert – not a carol service will, as usual, be full of popular and seasonal music. It will take place at

Blackrock Tidy Towns celebrate Blackrock picked up no less than 11 prestigious prizes at the 2012 Louth Looking Good awards held in the Crowne Plaza on Thursday, November 1. In the county Litter League, Blackrock received the top award once again as the cleanest large village/small town in Louth, retaining its gold award and achieving a 94% cleanliness rating. The village was judged runner-up as best overall town or village in the county, coming second only to
Tallanstown. Five of the shopfronts on Main Street received prizes for their contribution to the appearance of the village - The Bayview Inn, The Neptune, The Brake, The Clermont and The Black Wok. The village got the top award in the Waste Minimisation category, and second place for the best Leader funded project for the biodiversity garden in the park. Eileen Carter was runner-up in the Environmentalist of the Year competition for her wonderful work in the park,
and Haggardstown old cemetery got second prize in the county in the Best Kept Graveyard category. John Horan, chairperson of Blackrock Tidy Towns, again thanked everyone involved in presenting Blackrock to this exceptional standard, including the committee, all the volunteer litter patrollers and helpers, sponsors, the CE scheme and County Council personnel, RehabCare and the Probation Service. “We especially want to acknowledge Main Street

businesses and residents for presenting their premises to such a high standard, and all the residents associations who put such a huge effort into the presentation of their estates. We especially want to acknowledge the work of the CE Scheme under supervisor Pat Rafferty who built on the work of a number of previous committees and individuals in the parish in developing the old graveyard. The Tidy Towns congratulates all the prizewinners” he said.
Dear Editor, Hurricane Sandy that caused so much destruction in New York should become a strong encouragement to us all to speed up the transition to a low carbon society. We all need to re-think ways to reduce our use of heating oil and petrol. There is no doubt in my mind that there is a strong link between this violent storm and the growing levels of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. The evidence is well established; growing levels of greenhouse gases are trapping the sun’s heat, the planet is slowly warming up and with this the seas are also becoming warmer. Warmer seas in turn have more energy and the problem is that this energy, as a consequence, will deliver more frequent, more intensive and more destructive hurricanes. Hurricane Sandy will become another record breaking weather event like so many in recent years before it from around the world. We sometimes don’t become affected by such weather disasters in far off remote places and countries. The significance in this case however was that it was one of the most wealthy and most powerful societies in the world that was being so badly impacted and traumatized by this
example of climate change. Hurricane Sandy is yet more evidence to the scientists who have already established the link between rising levels of atmospheric CO2 and rising global temperatures. This is a very urgent international issue. In many places around the world this level of climate change is causing havoc to people’s lives, to the safety of families and to their means of living. The announcement of public money for energy improvements in Cox’s Demesne, the recent completion of the safe cycle route to schools, and the new cycle way to be built between Carlingford and Omeath are all positive developments that can address the issue of climate change. These are also all welcome opportunities for people to reduce the cost of oil and petrol. To help avoid another Hurricane Sandy as happened in New York, to avoid another Hurricane Katrina that hit New Orleans, to avoid more misery and destruction let’s take many small actions to reduce our energy use. Let’s get on our bikes more often. Let’s cycle to work and to school. Let a cycling journey to town be a part of your personal contribution to the future climate stability of our planet. Yours, Ollan Herr Dundalk Cycling Alliance.

Over to you Is it right that woman are now to pay the same car insurance as men from December?
Tommy O’Donoghue
Alice Gernon
Rebecca and Aaliyah Clarke
I’d have to put a huge question on the wisdom of changing it. It’s a dicey proposition and I’m not too sure what the correct solution would be.
Of course women should pay the same as men. I believe in equality and I don’t think it’s fair that women have been getting a better deal for years.
Personally I think it should stay the way it is. The reason why women have been paying less is because they are better drivers and cause less accidents.
John Malone I’m glad they’re changing it. I could never understand why women paid less insurance than men. It’s only fair everybody should pay the same.
Lena Connolly I don’t think it’s right. The reason women’s insurance is cheaper is because they are safer drivers. So it stands to reason they shouldn’t pay as much.
Locals survive New York hurricane Continued from page 1 where you should see the rest of the city all you could see was buildings in complete darkness. There was a point in the skyline where the lights just ended,” Paula said. “It was unbelievable. There was mayhem on the streets. The storm mostly hit downtown and we really got a shock when we went that far into it. It was heartbreak- Gary McLaughlin survived the hurricane in New York ing for them,” she added Former lead singer Trevor Callan who left some months ago says have escaped any serious with the New Originals, Ireland for New York he feels very lucky to damage. Trevor stayed
with friends in the Astoria area of the city during the storm. “The wind was pretty serious and we could hear some trees falling and car alarms etc but nothing near as serious as other parts of the city” he said. “It’s just crazy to think that within a mile or two from Astoria people including children have been killed, houses completely destroyed and homes and lives ruined . We’ve been very lucky
indeed,” Trevor said. Gary McLaughlin is another Dundalk man who moved to New York this year but was relieved to escape the worst of the storm, although there was a lot of apprehension beforehand. “We went to the shops that day to get a few bits and pieces on Sunday and it was pandemonium. “There was no bread or milk left on the shelves and the queues went the whole way down the aisles so that was a bit of
a sight to see. It was real armageddon stuff. “At around 8pm on Sunday night the full effects of it starting hitting the East coast. Where we were, to be honest, it was like a bad February’s day in Ireland. The wind was strong outside and there was plenty of heavy rainfall. Thankfully our electricity survived and we were able to keep up with things through the TV or internet. It flickered a few times, but survived”, explained Gary.

LaFaro headline O’Connells of Quay Street
This Friday night November 9, LaFaro roll into town. The band are set to headline in the town’s newest live music venue “O’Connells on Quay Street”. It will be the last chance to catch the band for a while as they are due to hit the road with top dogs Therapy on a string of european dates on “The brief crack of live tour” The band have built up quite a fan base locally with their fast and aggressive live performances. Original bass player Herb is now back on duty and it’s easy to see the impact he has on the others while on stage. He has slotted straight back in and the heavy
riffs he supplies really sit well with the LaFaro sound. Support on the night from Drogheda’s finest rockers Black Svan and another northern act Abandcalledboy. A three piece who now boast Mark Finnegan on bass. Mark is also know from his time in The Holy Ghost Explosion and Anna’s Chamber. Spinning tunes on the night is DJ Propaganda. Some of Dundalk’s musical bigwigs have joined forces to help raise funds for local suicide prevention charity SOSAD. Four DJ’s and three bands are taking over the Castle Bar in Seatown this November 17 for a night of music with all profits going to SOSAD. The event will see performances from Podracer, Richard Richard and Black Svan as well as DJ sets from some of the area’s most notable mixers Propaganda, Kirkface Killah and Evil Presidentes. SOSAD is a support service dedicated to tackling the increasing problem of death by suicide. Their volunteers man the 24 hour emergency support line and are specially trained in suicide intervention. They also conduct risk assessment, one to one counselling as well as bereavement care. In an effort to support those who are working round the clock to support others these acts have pooled their talent and are putting on the fundraiser. The first band kicks off at 9pm in the Castle Bar on Saturday November 17.

new Civic Diesel
The Honda Civic is set to get the new 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine from January 2013 and will also be available for the new CR-V later in 2013. The all-new engine has been developed exclusively for Europe, and tested extensively on a variety of roads across the continent. As with the Civic itself, the engine has been built at Honda’s factory at
Swindon in th UK. The 1597cc diesel 1.6 i-DTEC unit features a 6-speed manual gearbox and in the Civic offers a maximum power output of 120PS at 4,000rpm while maximum torque is 300Nm at 2,000rpm. It promises 3.6L/100km (78.5mpg) on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 94 g/ km. The new engine will be available in the
SE trimmed model, the ES and the top-ofthe-range EX model. The specification for these three trim levels will be identical to the equivalent 2.2-litre i-DTEC cars, but with 16-inch alloy wheels. The 1.6 i-DTEC EX has also been enhanced with front and rear parking sensors, an auto-dimming rear view mirror and DAB digital radio.
The new SEAT IBIZA CUPRA The new SEAT Ibiza CUPRA is due to go on sale early 2013. The new 3-door CUPRA is powered by a turbocharged/ supercharged 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine that develops 180 PS and 250 Nm as seen in the likes of VW Polo GTi and Audi A1. It promises a 0-100kph time of 6.9 seconds and a top speed where permitted of 228kph/142 mph. On the urban cycle the official fuel consumption figure is recorded as 5.9L/100km (47.9 mpg). It may disappoint some that the Ibiza CUPRA features a seven-speed DSG twin-clutch automatic transmission, which can be operated via paddles mounted behind the steering wheel. Compared to the standard Ibiza the CUPRA’s ride height is
lower and an optional AP Performance braking system is available. An XDS electronic differential lock reduces the tendency to understeer and improves handling, and an ESP electronic stability system incorporating hill start is part of the safety package that comes as standard on the Ibiza CUPRA; the car has been awarded the maximum five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test.
On the equipment front it comes with standard bi-xenon head lights with cornering function, LED daytime running lights and LED brake lights. Plus climate control, rain-sensing automatic windscreen wipers and 17-inch alloy wheels are standard fit. CUPRA styling and performance-enhancing accoutrements, including signature gloss black mirrors, CUPRA front and rear bumpers, matte black rear diffuser incorporating a large
trapezoidal central tailpipe, and a pair of unique front sports seats. The Ibiza CUPRA features a new entertainment system entitled the SEAT Portable System. Which is removable for mobile use yet integrates into the vehicle electronics system. Its features a navigation system with Bluetooth audio streaming, a Micro SD card slot for music storage, hands-free phone system with voice control, and an on-board computer.

The new golf GTi The all-new Volkswagen Golf GTI will be going on sale late next year, 2013.. It will be powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine with 220 PS (10 PS more than the current Golf GTI). For the first time in the car’s history, the GTI will also be available, direct from the factory, with a ‘performance pack’ which will boost the car’s maximum power to 230 PS. The pack not only enhances performance but also handling, with front brake disc diameters increased, plus a front axle differential lock which reduces powerrelated understeer. In the entry-level car with 220 PS, maximum torque has been increased by 70 Nm to 350 Nm – the same as the previous
Golf R. The new Golf GTI with the 220 PS unit will do 0 - 100kph time of 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 246kph / 153mph; add the performance pack and maximum power rises to 230 PS, top speed to 249kph /155mph, and the sprint time falls to 6.5 seconds. Both versions of the Golf GTI will be equipped with a standard Stop/Start system, and fulfil the EU-6 emissions standard that takes
effect in 2014. With a six-speed manual gearbox, the GTI has carbon dioxide emissions of 140 g/ km. A six-speed DSG gearbox is available as an option for both power levels. All of these figures are provisional as exact specifications have yet to be confirmed. As you would expect the styling will pay homage to GTI’s of the past - including red brake callipers,

Do’s and Don’ts of Driving Through Water
honeycomb grille with double red stripe detail, smoked LED rear lights and LED licence plate illumination and chrome 80 mm diameter tailpipes. Inside, tartan sports seats, a flat bottomed steering wheel, GTI golf ball gear knob and GTI-specific red ambience lighting hark back to cars of previous generations while remaining completely up to date and refreshed for the new generation.
Excess surface water has lead to some difficult driving conditions in the last month or so. Courtesy of AA Ireland, here is some advice on driving through floods and standing water. Only drive through water if you know that it’s not too deep for your car! Drive slowly and steadily to avoid creating a bow wave. Allow oncoming traffic to pass first and test your brakes as soon as you can after leaving the water. Don’t try driving through fastmoving water, such as at a flooded bridge approach – your car could easily be swept away. Driving fast through standing water is dangerous – tyres lose contact with the road and you lose steering control in what’s known as ‘aquaplaning’. Watch out for standing water, trying to avoid it if you can, and adjust your speed to the conditions. If you do experience aquaplaning, hold the steering wheel lightly and lift off the throttle until the tyres regain grip. Driving fast through standing
water is inconsiderate – driving through water at speeds above a slow crawl can result in water being thrown onto pavements, soaking pedestrians or cyclists. You could face a hefty fine and between three and nine penalty points if the Gardai believe you were driving without reasonable consideration to other road users. Driving fast through standing water can cause expensive damage – the air intake on many cars is low down at the front of the engine bay and it only takes a small quantity of water sucked into the engine to cause serious damage. All engines are affected but turbo-charged and diesel engines are most vulnerable. As you drive slowly through standing water keep the engine rev’s high by using a lower gear, otherwise water in the exhaust could damage the catalytic convertor. If you break down in heavy rain don’t prop the bonnet open while you wait for the Patrol to arrive – the engine will be more difficult to start again if the electrics are all rainsoaked.
