It has been a memorable week for three local families as they saw their dreams come true just in time for Christmas. The Bingham family from Bay Estate are rejoicing after picking up their €3.6m cheque from the National Lottery, while two other young people have had their own reasons to celebrate. Alex Meehan has hit the headlines after realising the dream of appearing on the Late Late Toy Show, while Grace Gartland had the joy of meeting her heroes, Jedward at a special event. Gerry Bingham was

At the November at the some- town council meeting he called on the council to paint black and white road markings and provide flashing amber lights on all polls. “I sat at the square this evening and watched eight people trying to cross the road from the Square over to Earl St. I counted four cars that didn’t stop at the pedestrian crossing during this same period and I really thing we need to do something about this” explained Cllr Bellew. “Something is very wrong with the pedestrian crossing if cars aren’t stopping to let people cross. I am again asking if there has been any progress with regards to these flashing lights?” Town Engineer Cath-

erine Duff said reports will issued about the pedestrian crossings and brought before the council as soon as possible. Cllr Oliver Morgan also raised the matter of pedestrian crossings at the November Town Council meeting urging the council to standardise all of the towns pedestrian crossings to “minimise the present

chronic disruption of traffic flow and consequent danger to our road users” In his motion, Cllr Morgan said the engineers’ reports should “contain an evaluation of the possibility of making all these pedestrian crossings easily and safely usable by the physically impaired”.

Man was reading Grammar students prepare for trade fair paper while driving

A man who came to Garda attention for driving erratically on the motorway was observed reading newspaper placed on the steering wheel. Michael Gerard Dinsmore, 54 Ganna Way, Warrenpoint, Co Down, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving after admitting to “only taking a brief glance at the paper”. Dundalk District Court heard that at 8.20am on November 23, the defendant was spotted driving erratically and

going from lane to lane on the southbound carriage of the M1. An unmarked Garda car pulled up alongside him and observed that he had a newspaper on his steering wheel. The defendant, who stated that he hadn’t lost control of the car, was fined €200 by Judge Flann Brennan. He warned Mr Dinsmore that he would be disqualified if he repeated the offence.

By Brendan Lawlor Every year Dundalk Grammar School has their annual Christmas Trade Fair. There are only two years that take part in this trade fair, they are Transition Year (4th) and the First Years. The trade fair is great for transition but it is even better for first years because it gets them an insight to business and also how it works.

The idea of the trade fair is to design your own product, sell it at a stall and hopefully make some money. However, the money isn’t all for the people who sell the goods as a percentage of the profits go to charity. The trade fair will take place in Dundalk Grammar School’s new multipurpose hall on Thursday December 13 from 2pm to 6pm. The

A family wedding turned sour for a Dundalk man when he broke a window in the hotel and assaulted a Garda who came to investigate. Paul Jackson, Mill Road, Dundalk, was warned to take responsibility for his actions or end up in jail by Judge Flann Brennan who imposed a 12 month suspended sentence. “The problem in this case is not drink, but that he was violent”, stated Judge Brennan. “The world is full of people who

drink too excess but they don’t resort to criminal offences or violence. I have given him chances but it is time Paul Jackson started to take responsibility for his actions. “If you do anyth ing like this again in the next 12 months you will go to jail”, he added. The court heard that Jackson was at a family wedding in the Carrickdale Hotel on May 10 this year when Gardai were called after a window had been broken.

Gardai called to the defendant’s room and he became abusive. He struck one of the officers on the nose with a full can of beer, causing swelling. Pepper spray was used to arrest him. The damage caused was valued at €430.50. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the Probation Service believe there is hope for the young man if he can stay away from alcohol.

Judge is not impressed by the delusional evidence of witness The quality of evidence given by a defendant at Dundalk District Court prompted the judge to order a psychiatric report on the man. Judge Flann Brennan stated that he was most unimpressed by the evidence given by Fergal Sheehy as he faced a number of public order charges. “I don’t believe a word of what he says and I think there is something wrong. There is a delusional quality to his evidence and for that reason I will remand him in custody for a week for a psychiatric report”, stated the judge. The court heard that Sheehy, who had various addresses at Ashbrook, Drive One, Muirhevnamor and Avondale Park attended Dundalk Garda Station on June 25 and continuously rang the bell. He had

a strong smell of alcohol and demanded to talk to a particular Garda who was not in the station. The incident took place in the early hours of a busy Saturday night/Sunday morning and the defendant refused to leave. He was subsequently arrested. Sheehy told the court that he was out for a walk with his dog and just called into the station to enquire about the investigation into an alleged assault on him. On April 14 this year, Gardai were called to a disturbance at 6.50am at Holly Park, Bay Estate, where Gardai saw Sheehy on the street. His ex partner said he had been knocking on the door and would leave. The defendant was told to leave and abused Gardai before walking

away. However, when Gardai returned three minutes later he was back at the house. He had been drinking from a container and there was a smell of alcohol. Sheehy stated that he was simply calling to the house but accepted that he was not co-operative. At 8.30am on May 29 Gardai received a call from a resident at Holly Park where they found Fergal Sheehy. He was drinking from a container and there was a smell of alcohol. He was arrested after becoming abusive to Gardai. Sheehy stated that he was taking his dog for a walk on that occasion and had stopped to ask his ex for a light. He said he had been drinking an energy drink.

NO MORE READING GLASSES Did you know, you no longer need to be dependent on reading glasses, thanks to a pioneering new surgery called KAMRA Vision. At Optilase, we are proud to be the only clinic in Northern Ireland and the UK, to offer this new, life-changing surgery. Maybe you’re holding this article at arm’s length trying to focus? Everyday tasks from reading the paper or a text, checking a price tag or food menu are equally tricky, without the use of bothersome reading glasses. The fact is, as we get older, we lose our near vision. The technical term is “presbyopia”. It’s simply part of the ageing process and happens to everyone, even those who have previously had laser vision correction or enjoyed perfect vision all of their lives. Traditionally, most people with presbyopia use reading glasses to improve their near vision but with reading glasses come numerous vision and lifestyle constraints. This is the unique benefit of this revolutionary new treatment. With KAMRA Vision comes freedom and convenience. The restoration of near vision means no more dependency on reading glasses. Brian Loughlin, from L/Derry had the Kamra treatment at Optilase, Belfast in July of this year and commented: “I had the Kamra treatment at Optilase in July and it has absolutely changed my life. I used to need reading glasses to see anything up close, my mobile, computer, the news-

paper. As soon as I heard that I could get rid of my reading glasses I went for an assessment at Optilase, L/Derry. Thankfully, I was an ideal candidate and I booked my treatment for the very next week. The treatment itself was absolutely painless and took less than 30 seconds per eye. Immediately afterwards, my reading vision was fantastic! I no longer have to wear any sort of glasses. It really has changed not only my working life but the quality of my life altogether”.

“The treatment itself was absolutely painless and took less than 30 seconds per eye.”

So how does it work?

What’s called a “KAMRA inlay” is used, an exceptionally small ring, just 3.8mm in diameter and weighing less than a grain of salt. The inlay has an opening in the centre and is placed under the surface of the cornea over the centre of the pupil. It corrects presbyopia by narrowing the opening that permits light rays to enter the eye. The inlay repositions the focal point back onto the surface of the retina to achieve crisp, sharp vision. Expect to return to your usual routines the very next day! The result is picture perfect vision, without the need for cumbersome reading glasses! To find out if you are a suitable candidate, why not contact Optilase on 08000 121 565 or visit www.optilase.co.uk

A new Táin for the Dundalk’s Market Square

Two Dundalk artists have used the legend of the Táin as inspiration for a new mural which they have just completed. Sited at the back wall of the Tourist Office on the Market Square in Dundalk’s town centre, this new depiction of the Táin is the work of Barry Finnegan and Killian

Walsh and depicts characters and the landscape of the Táin. “The installation of the Táin sculptures as part of the redevelopment of the Market Square this time last year made the link between Dundalk and the Táin more real. These sculptures by John Behan re-

ally bring home the link between Dundalk and the best known Celtic saga in the world. And this mural by Barry and Killian further reinforces the link” said County Arts Officer, Brian Harten, who along with the Engineering Section of Dundalk Town Council, commissioned the

two artists to design and install the piece. “Dundalk Tidy Towns have been hard-working and innovative in their efforts to improve the appearance of the town, and Louth Local Authorities are delighted to work hand-in-hand with the Tidy Towns committee to create artworks

which make Dundalk a more visually attractive place in which to live and visit, and which strengthens Dundalk’s links to its heritage.” says Senior Executive Engineer, Padraig O’Hora, who supervised the mural’s creation. The two artists, Barry Finnegan and Killian

The VEC is reporting that completed applications for a place in the school are pouring in after it was unable to comfortably accommodate everybody that turned up at its premises in Chapel Street, Dundalk last week to hear about what was planned for the new school. The large attendance on the night required extra seating to be drafted in, and the level of interestwas welcomed by CEO of Co. Louth VEC, Dr. Pádraig Kirk. “I was absolutely delighted to see such a high attendance on the night. It was a momentous night for everyone involved in all-Irish education provision, for Dundalk, for Co. Louth and for the wider region. “The large attendance confirmed that a very high level of demand exists for all-Irish education at this level in this area and it vindicated our decision to proceed with the establishment of Coláiste Lú”, he stated.

Grace finally gets to meet Jedward RNLI Christmas event By Paul Byrne

She waited four long years to meet her two heroes and last week Grace Gartland from Ashling Park in Dundalk finally

got to meet Ireland’s most famous twins as Jedward met the eleven year old at the waxworks museum in Dublin. Grace has been a fan of the Lucan twins since

they first burst onto the scene on the X-Factor four years ago. She has wanted to meet the energetic duo ever since and that dream was realised thanks to a letter sent

from Grace’s mother to the waxwork museum in Dublin. “I heard that Jedward were appearing in the wax museum to unveil their sculptures so I emailed Lisa Jameson in the museum asking could she sort out a meet and greet for us and thankfully she replied and said she would organise it for us” explained Grace’s mother Niamh. “We travelled up to Dublin last weekend and not only did Grace get to see the boys they were actually hanging out with us for almost two hours. It was a bit mad just chatting away to John and Edward for so long. I

have to say they were absolutely dead on and they are really funny lads” added Niamh. Grace, whose bedroom is a shrine to the Lucan duo, said she was amazed to finally meet her heroes and admitted it was a day she will never forget. “I couldn’t believe that I got to talk to them and hang out with them for so long. I’d wanted to meet them for so long so it was great to finally get to talk to them. I’ve been showing my friends all the pictures we took with Jedward and they’re all very jealous” laughed Grace. It was definitely one of the best days of my life so far” she added.

The Carlingford Marina Bar and Restaurant will be opening its doors for a fundraising event in aid of the RNLI on Friday December 7. On arrival at 8pm, attendees will be greeted with a mulled wine reception before being invited into the dining room for a large buffet.

Later in the night there will be live music and a raffle with lots of great prizes including a free weekend’s stay in

Man got a wife and driving ban

A young man who came to Dundalk with the intention of proposing to his girlfriend got more than he bargained for when he came to the attention of Gardai. Andrew Connors of 14 Rossfield Ave, Tallaght, not only ended up with a wife and child on the way, but was also disqualified from driving for 20 years and given two months in prison at Dundalk District Court. The defendant was stopped by Gardai at the Dublin Road on July 11 this year and initially gave a false name. He was not insured and had been disqualified for 25 years in 2009. Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly, stated that his client wanted to apologise for his actions. He has since got married and his wife is expecting their first child. He is currently serving a three month sentence. In imposing the sentence, Judge Flann Brennan warned that the defendant was unlikely ever to get insurance with his record.

Please help me, I think I have won the Lotto

Dundalk Leader 5th December 2012

By Paul Byrne

“Can you help me please? I think I’ve won the lotto” Those were the words spoken by Gerry Bingham from Bay Estate last Tuesday morning as he rang lotto headquarters in Dublin to confirm that he was the sole winner of the almost €3.6 million jackpot. Gerry was joined by his wife Marie, sons Alan and Gerard, daughter Niamh and his five grandkids as they travelled to Dublin to collect the winning cheque. News broke last Sunday that the sole winning ticket of the jackpot was sold in the north east as lotto players from all over the region frantically checked their numbers. However Gerry

Gerry and Marie Bingham with their Lotto cheque

was completely unaware that he was in possession of the winning ticket until Monday evening when he decided to sit down and check his numbers. “I hadn’t heard that the winner was from the north east and I was just going through my usual

Monday routine really. I went to Mass on Monday morning, did the meals on wheels route and then just went about my day as normal” explained Gerry. “Usually I’d just scan the lotto ticket in the shop whenever I’m in town to check my num-

bers but for some reason I decided to check them at home on Monday evening. Gerry checked the numbers on and was in shock as he realised that he had all six numbers. Having double checked with his wife Marie the couple still couldn’t be-

Thought he had permission to drive ex-girlfriend’s car A man who mistakenly believed he had the permission of his girlfriend to use her car also fell foul of the law after crashing the vehicle are leaving the scene. Sean Byrne of Ravanny, Louth, appeared at Dundalk District Court to face charges of taking a vehicle without authority, driving without insurance and failing to stop, as a result of the single vehicle crash.

The court heard that on March 11 this year, Gardai attended a road traffic accident at Martin’s Cross, Dundalk, although the driver had left the scene. After the owner of the car reported the vehicle stolen, Gardai questioned Sean Byrne who admitted taking and crashing the car for which he had no insurance. Solictor, Frank McDonnell, stated that

this was not the normal case of unauthorised taking, as he believed he had the implied permission of his then girlfriend, with whom he is no longer in a relationship. While he had no specific consent to drive the car, he had previously driven it and had been named on the insurance policy at one stage. His girlfriend regularly stayed at his house and

on the night in question had been out with his sister when she left the car. He had attempted to get a loan to buy another car for the victim, and also offered to have it repaired which was not accepted. Judge Flann Brennan fined the defendant €100 in each case and disqualified him from driving for a period of two years.

lieve they’d won the jackpot and rang their son for further confirmation. “We were shaking but we still weren’t 100% sure so we rang our son Alan and called out our numbers to him. He checked them and came back to us and said if we had those numbers we had just won the lotto jackpot. “The house has been mad all week with all our children and grandkids staying with us and it’s only really now that the house is quiet again that the feeling is beginning to sink in. We have no immediate plans for the money and we’re just going to relax and enjoy the feeling for a while before making any decisions.” added Gerry.

Alex steals show on the Late Late Alex stops for a chat with Ryan Tubridy

By Niamh Kirk

Young gaelgoir Alex Meehan has become the star of this year’s Late Late Toy Show after exchanging cúpla focail with presenter Ryan Tubridy on Fridays show. The five-year-old sped onto the set of the Toy Show waving from the tractor he had been asked to test drive through the set. Although it wasn’t planned, Ryan knelt down to have a chat with Alex. Despite the impromptu chat Alex confidently announced he was from Blackrock in Dundalk. He went on to take Ryan and the audience by surprise when he asked in perfect Irish. “Conas ata tu? An bhfuil tu go maith agus any scéal agat?” The question got a round of applause from the audience and clearly impressed the RTE presenter who replied saying he was “Go han mhaith” (very good) and asked after Alex.

Keeping up the bantar Tubridy asks if Alex has any craic? “Níl” he replied and headed off on his tractor to the sound of riotous applause. Alex was selected from 20,000 applicants who wanted to test out toys for the 2012 Toy Show. His proud mum Sharon says he is a natural entertainer, his confidence and outgoing personality convinced them to send in a tape of Alex demonstrating to the show’s producers. Initially he was asked to do a ‘drive through’ on the show. “On arriving to the studios he spotted the green tractor and added the horse he named ‘Billy’ to the trailer before his first practice when he simply drove through the set. But anything can happen on live television and ‘Tubs’ took the opportunity to chat to Alex on air. The clip of Alex’s appearance has been hugely popular online with almost 70,000 hits

on YouTube. His parents find his online success amazing. It also meant that his aunt in the US and uncle in Canada have been able to enjoy their nephew’s appearance on national TV. He has been recognised out shopping and his class mates can’t know enough about his experience on Ireland’s most famous show. “It’s a great achievement for him, that he had the confidence to do it” said his mum Sharon Meehan. Both his parents and his big sister Saoirse say they are very proud of Alex. Alex’s attended an Irish speaking preschool and is currently at Scoil Dun Dealgan where he has continued to learn Irish. His parents who encourage him to speak ‘As geailge’ when possible are grateful to his muinteoir for teaching him Irish so well. Ms Meehan said “it is amazing to see how well he picked it up and how well he can speak it.”

Over to you QUESTION: Are you looking forward to Christmas?

Anne Murphy

Sharon Casey

James Hoey

I always look forward to Christmas I have to say. I love the whole buzz around the streets and getting a few days off work. It’s nice to have time to meet up with family and friends as well.

I absolutely love the whole Christmas period. I like seeing the lights around town and getting presents and everything about it really. Except the snow. I can’t say I like that.

I used to love it when I was a kid getting presents and all that and then as a teenager it was good fun going out having a drink with friends. But at this stage it doesn’t mean much to me. It’s definitely more for kids I’d say.

No, I’d have to say I wouldn’t be a fan of Christmas really. It’s a sad time especially if you’ve lost people over the years. It can be a lonely time thinking about loved ones who are no longer around.

Stephen McGivern Yeah I do enjoy the whole buzz around Christmas. It’s nice getting a couple of weeks off school and it’s good craic going out with friends over the holidays.

Od dzieciństwa był bardzo pobożny. Dlatego rodzina zdecydowała, że poświęci on swoje życie kapłaństwu. W 300 roku został biskupem Miry. Po śmierci rodziców otrzymał spory spadek. New plans provide a boost for arts scene in County Louth By Paul Byrne

The arts in County Louth is set to receive a huge boost as plans are put in place to amalgamate the existing facilities in the Town Hall into one entity. The Town Clerk’s Office of Dundalk

recruited so we have decided to look at the possibility of setting up a separate company limited by guarantee to run the centre. “This company will comprise of a minimum number of seven members and will ideally include a solicitor, accountant, an

person with experience in the arts field, two councillors and two others”, he explained. The next step in this process is to set up this new company and it will require two elected members to be nominated to sit on the board of this company. It is envisaged that

this company will be established in the first quarter of 2013. County Arts Officer Brian Harten hopes that the process will result in a more cohesive unit which will offer a wider range of activities in the town hall. “Obviously the facilities we have are

not being used to their full extent and we are hopeful that this project will increase activity in the gallery, the two theatres as well as the bar. We envisage that the public will have a much wider range of shows, performances and exhibitions in 2013.” added Brian.

Good news for savers and borrowers Blackrock Girl at Dundalk Credit Union AGM Guides toy appeal The launch of the Blackrock Girl Guide Toy Appeal in conjunction with SVP at the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Sunday December 2, was a great success. Despite the weather the local community turned up to support what is now a real Christmas treat, the arrival of Santa, the lighting of the tree and now of course the Girl Guide Toy Appeal. Some of the Girl Guides, Eileen, Melissa, Saidbh and Carissa were there to receive the toys and were once again

overwhelmed with the generosity within the community. It was a great start to the Toy Appeal which will run from now until December 16, with depots in the local Centra, Vivo and Greengates stores. Centra will once again match each toy given with a selection box. The organisers urge all in the community to support this worthy cause and encourage our children to help others in need this Christmas. Please don’t forget the teenagers and one

suggestion might be to buy gift vouchers. The Christmas Show will take place on Sunday December 16 at 4pm, Blackrock Community Centre. It promises to be a family fun filled show with some carol singing form the Ladybirds, Brownies got Talent, and a spectacularproduction of ‘Grease1.5’ from the Guides. Entrance fee is €3 per adult and €1 per child. There will be a tuck shop serving tea and coffee, sweets etc and a raffle in aid of the Toy Appeal.

The Chairman of Dundalk Credit Union, Pat Muckian, told a packed and very successful AGM in the Town Hall on Tuesday night last, that the Credit Union had an excellent year. “The payment of a competitive dividend on all shares while having one of the lowest personal loan rates (6.99% APR) of any Credit Union or financial institution in the country means good news for both savers and borrowers in Dundalk Credit Union” said Pat. Tom D’Arcy, Credit Union Treasurer presented a detailed report on the very healthy financial position for the Credit Union. Michael Bellew (Far-

for the year are a credit to the efforts of the Management, Staff and Board and are indicative

of the prudent and efficient manner in which they have carried out their duties.

The AGM re-elected the following Directors: Tom D’Arcy, Celia Farrell, Ida Lewis, Jim Kelly, Pat Muckian and Briege Roddy. Meanwhile, Briege Whyte was re-elected to the Supervisory Committee and Alan Farrelly was appointed as Auditor. At a meeting of the new Board of Directors which was held immediately after the AGM concluded, Pat Muckian was re-elected as Chairman of Dundalk Credit Union. Tom D’Arcy was reelected as Credit Union Treasurer, Pat Donaghy was elected as Credit Union Secretary and Martin Hegarty as ViceChairman of the Board of Directors.

There was another accolade for Dundalk as the 24 Hour Art Gallery was given the a Supporting Active Communities Eirgrid at the 9th Annual Excellence in Local Government Awards. The Gallery consists of the 34 pictures of old Dundalk on 17 lamp posts around the town centre. The images are particularly pro-

nounced during winter when the hanging baskets are down. Receiving the award on the night Town Council Chair, Jennifer Green said: “Of course, we were only accepting it on behalf of a large number of people involved in the Open 24 Hours Art Gallery and I must congratulate everyone who has been involved

in bringing this project to life so colourfully”. “To receive this award in the first phase of the Gallery initiative is fantastic. I know the people behind the Gallery are planning for future exhibitions and initiatives and I am looking forward to seeing the fantastic images on Dundalk’s main streets in the future”, she added.

Band’s video is a big hit Local Nu-metal band I’d Fight Gandhi’s video for their single InstruMental is making big impact online with almost 5,000 YouTube hits in just over one week. The video was created by Failsafe Films, an award winning Production Company which was co-founded by band member Ian Hunt Duffy. “I’ve mostly directed ads and short films, but this was my first music video, as well as the bands first video, so I wanted to try and do something a bit different,” said Ian. The video was shot in an old factory in Dublin this September as a parody of cult classic movie Fight Club, from which the band get

their name. It depicts the famous scene of the Fight Club when the aggressive malcontents form the circle to see two contenders battle it out. But this version has a humorous twist instead of bare knuckle boxing; it’s a game of slaps. “[You] have all these grown men being really competitive and taking it all very seriously, even though it’s basically a children’s game. We thought that could be a funny idea for a video so we went ahead and started developing it,” said Ian. The band was grateful to the many extras who took part in the shoot. “We begged and annoyed everyone we knew on Facebook in the run up to the

shoot. Thankfully a good few friends took pity on us, and we managed to get a great turnout on the night. We were also lucky enough to get some great actors and a tireless crew on board, and as you can see in the video everyone really came together and got into the spirit of things” said Ian. The track was recorded between the US and Ireland and features Lord Nelson from US rap metal band Stuck Mojo. A version of the track had been previously recorded but recently underwent a reedit at Westland Studios. The track is available for download on reverbnation.com/ idfightgandhi

A Dundalk man was disqualified from driving for four years after admitting to a charge of failing to produce a sample for Gardai. Dean Kearney, 481 Ashling Park, Dundalk, was arrested on May 30, 2010 and taken to Dundalk Station where he failed to undergo an intoxiliser test. The defendant, who is now living in Ballinasloe, was also fined €300.

Man parts company with solicitor as case begins A Dundalk man who parted company with his solicitor just before his case was heard at Dundalk District Court represented himself on a charge of failing to produce a breath sample and criminal damage. Terence Maughan, 56 Glenmore Park, Muirhevnamor, took issue

with the performance of his solicitor just as his case was called. The solicitor offered to withdraw and when the defendant continued to vent his disapproval, he stated that he had little option but to withdraw. As the defendant, who is serving a nine-month sentence, was anxious to have the case

heard on the day, he opted to represent himself. The court heard that on July 3 the defendant was arrested on suspicion of drink driving but failed to give a sample of breath. Maughan also faced a charge of criminal damage arising out a call to Gardai to attend Glenmore Park on July

22. The officers were told that a day earlier the defendant had been in a fight with another man and put his elbow through the window of a car. In each case, the defendant was convicted and sentenced to six months. He was disqualified from driving for 10 years and other charges were taken into consideration.

Get in Before the Budget with our Range of Low Tax Cars

You can now order the new twoseater Jaguar F-TYPE convertible from mid-2013. Three model variants will be available at launch – F-TYPE, FTYPE S and F-TYPE V8 S. Each is distinguished by the power output of its supercharged petrol engine with all engines featuring stop/start technology. The range starts off with the V6 F-TYPE which is powered by a new 340PS 3.0-litre V6 engine which is capable of 0-100kph/62 mph in 5.3 seconds with a top speed of 259kph/161mph. The all important CO2 emissions have been recorded as 209 g/km. The next model up is theV6 FTYPE S 380 PS version, same 3.0-litre V6 engine but slightly quicker at 4.9

seconds to 100kph/62mph and a top speed of 275kph171mph (which is electronically restricted) - CO2 emissions are 213 g/km. The range topping F-TYPE V8 S features a 495PS 5.0-litre V8 which will do the 0-100kph/62mph sprint in 4.3 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 299kph/186mph and CO2 emissions of 259 g/km. An active exhaust system, which is standard on the S and V8 S models, adds another dimension of driver-engagement. Valves in the exhaust system open under load from 3000rpm which allows the exhaust note to build to a thrilling crescendo at the redline. All the F-TYPEs are mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox with a set of eight closely-spaced,

sporting ratios in its QuickShift transmission, giving greater driver control. The V6-powered S model also includes a Dynamic Launch feature, which optimises acceleration from rest. The exterior speaks for its self where the interior takes its inspiration from cockpits of fighter airplanes, the controls are ergonomically grouped by function. Further aeronautical inspiration can be found in the joystick-shaped SportShift selector controlling the eightspeed transmission. The air vents on top of the dashboard will only deploy when instructed to by either the driver or complex control algorithms, staying tucked discreetly out of sight in other circumstances.
