Dundalk shoppers have again been urged to support their town this Christmas and shop locally if they want their town to prosper and grow over the coming years. According to Paddy Malone, President of the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce the message to shoppers in Dundalk is straight forward. “Our message to shoppers in Dundalk this year is a very simple one. Shop locally and help your local economy. Every time you shop in Dundalk you are helping to create a job and keeping money in our town” he explained. “Things have improved with regards to the amount of people travelling to Newry for their shopping and
we must strive to continue that trend going. We now need to capitalise on the situation so that Dundalk can again be the focal retail point not just for local people but for the north east.’ Mr Malone went on to explain how shopping local has all the obvious benefits while also binding the community together. “Shoppers generate wealth, employment and opportunity and are the glue which binds communities together” “We would ask the people who are shopping elsewhere to give the town a chance and I would say to them that they will get a pleasant surprise with regards to prices in Dundalk. “2009 and 2010 were bad years for traders in Dundalk Continued on Page 18

Conor to create a buzz on St Stephen’s Day By Paul Byrne The Christmas period around Blackrock would not be complete without a Conor Hughes fundraiser to entertain the masses on Blackrock beach and this St Stephen’s Day sees
that trend continue with the theme of the fundraiser being the humble ’bee’. This 26th of December in Blackrock will see the launch of a new self-help initiative for poverty stricken West Africian communities.
For every €65 raised, Crosscause can place a bee hive with a rural family. When the honey bees have produced, the honey it is then sold for the benefit of the family. Continued on page 17
Local reaction to recent budget cuts Dundalk Leader 12th December 2012

Local parents staged a protest against the cuts to child benefit in Budget 2013 outside Fine Gael TD’ Peter

verse the decision. . The decision slashes up to €240 per child from a family’s annual budget. Meanwhile Paddy Malone from the Chamber of Commerce has stated that local retailers may not have to worryabout an exodus to the north following the hike in alcohol prices. As the current rate of exchange only marginally favours the sterling the incentive to travel north is minimal. Saving is only really likely on very large alcohol shops. “The increase in alcohol particularly the wine will have some impact. However for the ordinary family it is not worth travelling north when time and petrol prices are included. As long as the euro is weak against sterling it should not make a huge difference,” he said.
care has increased dramatically over the past ten years and the respite grant increased to reflect that. Labour Senator Mary Moran said that she was disappointed
The Chamber staunchly opposed any increase in VAT after last year’s 2% increase. “Thankfully the message got through on VAT as this was left alone this year. We were also glad to note that petrol/diesel were untouched allowing our prices to remain lower than the North” said Mr Malone. However, students were not so content after
the cost of third level education rose again. Before the budget students warned that if the predicted €250 hike in student fees went ahead it would not only take almost €1 million out of the local economy. However, DkIT Students Union President David Brannigan said it will also price many families out of education, and in particular

those who rest just above the maintenance grant cut off point will feel acute pressure. The reduction of 3% threshold in the maintenance grant cut off point however means 8% of students will be €755 per year worse off. And the once off €300 back to education ‘Cost of Education’ allowance has been discontinued. The cost of respite

Electrician faces prospect of losing job after conviction A Tallanstown man who argued that correct procedure was not followed by a Garda in attempting to obtain a breath specimen, was banned from driving for three years after being convicted of failing to provide a sample. As a result of the conviction, the court heard that electrician, Paul Leonard of 6 Cherrywood Park, Tallanstown, is likely to lose his job. The defence barrister argued that the investigating Garda should have done more to determine the exact time of his client’s last drink before conducting the breath test. However, Judge Flann Bren-
nan did not agree that this was fatal to the prosecution and in convicting the 30-year-old he also imposed a €400 fine. The defence successfully argued that a second charge of drink driving in relation to a subsequent urine sample should be dismissed over an issue in relation to the charge sheet. The defendant was stopped by Gardai at 11.42pm on January 22 this year at Louth Village after he was observed pulling out in traffic and almost collided with the patrol car. He was asked to provide a breath specimen but failed to do so on three occasions and as a result was taken to Dundalk
Garda Station where a sample of urine was taken. Under cross examination, the investigating Garda confirmed that the test cannot be carried out if drink has been consumed within the last 20 minutes. The barrister stated that this was designed to ensure a reliable test result. Although the Garda agreed that the car had pulled out from near public houses, it hadn’t occurred to him to ask directly when the defendant had taken a drink last. He said that he assumed he had come from a chip shop as there was a smell of curry chip in the car. He stated that Paul Leon-
ard’s attempts to give a breath sample were not whole-hearted and he didn’t believe the defendant wanted to give a sample. The defence argued that the test was not lawful as the Garda had not complied with the requirement to determine the time of the last drink. However, Judge Brennan did not agree. “I am not satisfied that the Garda’s failure to ask is fatal to the prosecution. The Garda said that he had taken a view that Paul Leonard had come from a chip shop and there is nothing unreasonable with that”, he stated.
Dundalk Writers’ Launch Dundalk Writers launched their anthology ‘Nest’ recently with well known writer and film director Ferdia McAnna on hand to launch the book. Ferdia in his introduction spoke of the high standard of work included in ‘Nest’ and he was already looking forward to ‘Nest two’. Over one hundred guests enjoyed a sample reading of both prose and poetry on the night in the Whitaker Theatre DkIT by the 15 contributors. It has been a long journey for most of the writers, steadily improving along the way with regular meetings, workshops, and inviting established writers to read in Dundalk. One of the aims of the group is to increase numbers by being open and spreading their passion for creative writing. Nest was edited by writer Barbara Smith and can be bought in Carroll Books, Devenney’s, Hughes of Blackrock, Kavanagh Centre Iniskeen, and New Page Dublin.

Larry Magnier of Blackrock Tidy Towns has been presented with a Coastcare Merit Award at the annual An Taisce Clean Coasts awards in recognition of the committee’s work in keeping Blackrock beach so clean. While Larry was delighed with the award, he was keen to point out that it was a group effort rather than an individual honour. “It was lovely to get recognised for all the hard work we put in throughout the year in keeping Blackrock beach so tidy. Although it was me who picked up the award it is being shared between everybody who has helped out over the years in our village.
Michelle O’Sullivan, Patricia Oliver, Larry Magnier, Blackrock Tidy Towns, and Mary Murtagh Louth Co Council
“Between the Tidy Towns committee and the volunteers who help us as well as Louth County Council we have ensured that Blackrock beach is kept in immaculate condition.” explained Larry. “We have a litter patrol three times a day on
the beach which ensures rubbish doesn’t get a chance to build up. We’ve also installed a public telescope to give the public a chance to view the wonderful scenery in the area.” he added. Minister Fergus O’Dowd presented the
award to the Mr Magnier at the annual awards ceremony at the Royal College of Physicians. “Clean Coasts engages people in protecting our beaches seas and marine life for future generations, and Larry has proved himself to be at the vanguard of this
effort,” said Minister O’Dowd. “There are 285 Coastcare Groups in the country, which puts Blackrock’s efforts into perspective. Larry, and the whole Tidy Towns group should be incredibly proud”, added the minister.
Dundalk ‘ghosts’ highest in country Dundalk has among the highest levels of ghost estates in the country with a total of 17 according to a report conducted by the Department of the Environment. It shows that the town is the fourth worst in the country for estates that have not yet been completed and may not be for some time. By comparison to Dundalk’s 17 estates Gorey, which tops the list has 25, Carlow has 23 and Cavan 20. The department of the environment
along with local authorities conducted a survey of unfinished housing estates over the summer to help formulate an action plan on tackling the unfinished estates. Nationally, 1770 developments remain unfinished and are considered to be in seriously problematic condition. The report stated that the next phase for the majority of the developments is for funders and local authorities to work together in taking charge and ensuring that ‘”Reasonable standards of completion are achieved.”
Some developments appear to be commercially unviable in both the short and long terms due to the location , quality of the build or the commercial demand. In these cases, with respect to public safety and planning the sites may be cleared and returned to more beneficial usage. Specific proposals are expected by this coming spring. Louth has around 440 vacant houses, which equates to 1 in every 1000 houses.

Students Reaching for the Stars By Jessica Shields Some of Dundalk’s most talented students are set to display their skills at one of the biggest events on the school calendar. The Fairways Hotel Dundalk is set to burst at the seams with talent on Tuesday December 18 and 19 as St Louis School arrives for the finals of their school talent show, Search for a Star. The event that has been running for 15 years is eagerly anticipated as it only happens every two years, as a member of the organising committee explained. “It brings a great spirit to the school when it happens, especially because everyone in the school is involved. We have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of performers as we don’t get to see the great talent that exists at any other time during the year”, she stated. Having held the heats in the school at the end of October the committee had a hard job whit-

the towns that were shortlisted were among the more traditional tourist towns in Ireland including Killarney, Clonakilty and Westport. Portmagee, Co Kerry was awarded the first Tourism Town and wins €10,000. Dundalk doesn’t go empty handed as it picks up a €1000 grant.
The Tourism Towns Award was designed by Fáilte Ireland to promote those Irish towns and villages which are working hard to enhance their appeal to tourists visiting their local area. The overall winner announced received a €10,000 grant towards developing itself as a tourism destination.
This new award is being piloted as part of the National Tidy Towns Competition. All the towns which finished among the top 100 Tidy Towns in last year’s competition were deemed to have met the basic criteria and were invited to take part in this new tourism award scheme.

A young mother who asked for a chance to turn her life around was warned to stay away from drugs or face ending up in custody again. Bernadette Joyce, with addresses at Doolargy Avenue, saw her case on three theft charges adjourned to February 20 pending a Community Service report, as Judge Flann Brennan imposed a nine month sentence or 200 hours of community service. However, the defendant, who is due to be released from custody on December 21, was given a stern warning by the judge. “I will give you a
chance to do Community Service but if you go back on drugs, you won’t be suitable. You know what you have to do to keep your liberty and look after your child and that is to avoid drugs. “Don’t hang around with the same people and learn to say ‘no’ and walk away. If you go back on drugs you will be back in custody”, added Judge Brennan. The court heard that on October 6 this year, Bernadette Joyce took items work €673.18 from Hickey’s Pharmacy in the old Shopping Centre, while on September 30 she took four Barcelona jerseys from
Elvery’s Sports, valued at €420. On July 27, 2012, she stole a purse, valued at €100, from a staff member at Prize Pets, River Lane Dundalk, which contained €300. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that his client has been in custody since November 16 which has given her time to reflect. He handed in a letter from his client as he explained that she has taken steps to stay clear of drugs. While admitting that her list of offences is considerable, he asked that the judge consider Community Service as a means of giving his client a chance.

Coláiste Rís debaters in All-Ireland final Coláiste Rís will contest its tenth consecutive All-Ireland Debating Final on January 30 next after a resounding success in last Wednesday’s Semi Final of Comórtas Díospóireacht Uí Chadhain in Longford. The Chapel St outfit was opposing the motion ‘Aoibhinn beatha an fheirmeora in Éirinn’ – Happy is the life of a farmer in Ireland today. This latest success was all the more pleasing as the Dundalk school was the only one of the four schools taking part that was not located in the Gaeltacht; a measure of the strength and depth of the Irish debating tradition in the school. The team of Conchúir Ó Beaglaoich, Bearnard Mac Thoirealaigh and Hannah Ní Fhionnagáin did more than enough to see off the challenge of the opposition, that included the Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaráin, An Ceathrú Rua, the current All-Ireland Junior champions. While the standard of the debate was very high, the strong presentation skills and teamwork displayed by the local school earned them a merited final berth. Seán Ó Coigligh, team mentor, was very pleased with his charges.
Conchúir Ó Beaglaoich, Bearnard Mac Thoirealaigh and Hannah Ní Fhionnagáin with teacher Seán Ó Coigligh “Conchúir, Bearnard and Hannah really deserve everyone’s credit for what they have already achieved. It’s great to be able to see their talents developing”, he said. 2012 has been a great year on
the debating front for Coláiste Rís. Last January the school won the Senior Irish Debating Title for the first time in almost 20 years. The Junior title was last won in 2006. Hopes are high of another national title in the New Year.
Failed to co-operate due to a personality disorder A man who is on medication for a personality disorder told Dundalk District Court that due to medication he had no memory of an incident that led him to be convicted for failing to provide a sample. Solicitor for Anthony Derby, Rathduff, Bridge a Crinn, Dundalk, told the court that his client had received very serious injuries as a result of a traffic accident and now has a personality disorder. The solicitor added that this means the defendant must take medication, but added that his client should not drink. The 25-year-old is employed part-time in the family business as
a driver, but as a consequence of this incident, he won’t be able to work. He pointed out that the failure to co-operate with Gardai was a result of his personality disorder. The court heard that on August 6 this year, Gardai received a call
from staff at the Ballymascanlon Service Station with a report a male had attempted to drive off without paying. Officers stopped the defendant and took him to Dundalk Garda Station where he failed to give a sample. He had previously
been disqualified for drink driving in 2008 and 2010 but was not disqualified at the time of the incident. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €500 fine and disqualified the defendant for six years, taking other matters into consideration.

Man was too drunk to remember spitting in the face of a Garda A Dundalk man was so drunk that he couldn’t remember spitting in a Garda’s face. Barry Agnew of 37 Cypress Gardens, Bay Estate, pleaded guilty to the offence and apologised for his actions when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. The court heard that
Gardai came across two men at Market Square, Dundalk, on Friday June 29 at 11.50pm. The men were very drunk and they asked them to move on. One man became aggressive and began abusing the Gardai and he was subsequently arrest-
ed. Barry Agnew, who initially had walked away, then returned and as he resisted arrest, he spat at one of the officers. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client had no memory of the spitting incident as he was very drunk, but accepted that it happened.
He added that the 23-year-old was not proud of his actions and had been attending counselling to deal with his alcohol problem. In adjourning the case until May 22, Judge Flann Brennan warned the defendant to stay away from drink.

Bay Estate School Karate Club held a very successful Grading Exam that saw students pass with flying colours. During the grading exam they had to show that they had an understanding of basic techniques and combinations, followed by blocks, and all this had to be performed under the pressure of a panel of judges
Fake notes warning
Christmas shoppers and local retailers are being warned that there are a number of fake €50 and €100 notes in circulation in Dundalk. A number of the forged bank notes were found in circulation over the weekend. Local shop owners, staff and consumers are being warned to stay vigilant during the festive season. The central bank advise to check the paper which should be crisp and firm as well as the ink which should be raised in areas and to check the holographic strip, watermarks, security thread and holographic foul. It is a criminal offence to keep or to recirculate counterfeit banknotes or coins. If you think you are in position of receiving a fake you are obliged to return it to your financial institution or to contact Gardai.

Blackrock Hip Hop outfit The Megastars are celebrating after getting the thumbs up from none other than XFactor judge, Louis Walsh. The girls were one of 23 acts hoping to catch the eye in the annual school stars final in the TLT in Drogheda and they were rewarded with third place. Louis Walsh was genuinely impressed with the standard of the performances and The Megastars were one of
those who stood out. The local group had varied their act in the previous three rounds and once again they provided an original and impressive display. Their co-ordinated and explosive dance routine thrilled the crowd to put themselves in the reckoning for a prize. After the performance, Louis Walsh said that not only did he like the Megastars - he loved them, adding they were well drilled in unison, and had a cleverly put
together routine . When the final result was announced, the Megastars were absolutely delighted to bring back a trophy for third place to their two schools, Blackrock National School and St Francis School. Both school principals, Oreena Lawless and Angela McAdam were on hand to witness their students great success, and with a number of teachers also in attendance, it was very much a team effort.

The highlight will be an all day variety concert featuring such artists as BEE-oynce, The BEE-eatles and of course Sting. Speaking ahead of the fundraiser Crosscause founder Conor Hughes called for everybody in the area to come out and support the fundraiser.
Conor Hughes
“Everybody is invited to come along and enjoy the show, especially if they dress as a bee!” he explained “All singers, dancers, and comedians are wel-
come to come and perform, with these great international stars. The idea of the fundraiser is of course to raise money for these West African communities but as always we’ll be having lots of fun whilst doing so” added Conor. The action starts at 12 midday and continues until everybody buzzes off. Give Conor a buzz on 0879674829 for any inquiries
Drink driving charge due to low self esteem
A man convicted of drink driving at Dundalk District Court revealed that low-self esteem caused by being unemployed was the reason he had been drinking. Eoin James Watters with an address at 24 Edenappa Rd, Jonesboro, was stopped by Gardai at Bridge St, Dundalk, on August 6, 2012. His solicitor told the court that the man with a previous drink driving conviction had been working in the building trade but suffered from low self –esteem since becoming unemployed. He added that the father of three apologised and realises that he was wrong to drive. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €300 fine and disqualified him from driving for three years.

Relay for Life make donation of €95k On Friday November 28 the Dundalk Relay for Life Committee proudly handed over this year’s donation cheque of €94,469.97 to the Irish Cancer Society. Although a cold day, the spirits were high outside the Dundalk Swimming Pool & Leisure Centre, as the cheque was handed over, and the remembrance tree commemorating Dundalk Relay for Life was planted. The cheque handed over by Linda Steward, Deidre Branigan, Sharon Fitz Gore, Damien Higgins and
Bill Tosh will help to continue the much needed work of the ICS supporting cancer patients, their families, hospitals and research. “This is a fantastic achievement for Relay for Life Dundalk as there were adjustments that had to be made the event went from 24 hours to 12 hours due to location difficulties. Even with this, the teams rallied together and raised very close to last year’s total - an incredible result”, said Elaine Gillespie, ICS, who worked closely with the Dundalk team throughout the year.

In 2002 two of Rastachaun’s funding members Skinny and Covert, pioneered and electronic music night in the old Adelphi venue Rock the Planet. Over time they came to focus the music on drum and bass and soon they paired up with two other local DJs Rabhadh and Skinny to hold events in venues around Dundalk. They set up shop for time in the Clanbrassil Hotel where they held a monthly residency and gained a grass roots following. This Friday December 14 Rastachaun will be celebrating 10 years of bringing break beats and sub bass to Dundalk and keeping the electronic music scene in the area strong. The DJs will also be ringing in the new year in the Spirit Store’s new venue with MC Temper Metal Miss Elayneoous and the Backroom Bashment DJ’s.

In his heart he always wanted to follow his dream of becoming a musician and one day he went to Grafton Street with his guitar and started busking. “I’d encourage anyone to follow their heart, everyone has an artistic talent. Since I’ve embraced music in my life I’m making so many people happy. I’m making half as much money as I was during the good times but I’m twice as happy.” Pat has played in Dundalk before but never in the Spirit Store. He’s looking forward to the gig in the new venue.

Christmas concert. Having started the Christmas concert in 2003 where it was held in the Whitaker Theatre the concert has become an annual tradition and is one of the most anticipated events in both the musical and social calendars of DkIT Choral Society President, Ciara Moley outlined the importance of the choir to the music. “The choir meets weekly for two hours and this is one of the few occasions that over one hundred music students of all years get together, she stated. The night promises to deliver a wide range of music such as, a specially arranged overture based on medieval carols from the orchestra and the concert will also include the first performance of Dr Eibhlís Farrell’s Christus Ntus Est, another piece specially written for the choir and orchestra. The night will finish on some traditional carols from the choir and orchestra and also a special rewritten version of “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The choir and orchestra will be conducted by the maestro David Stalling along with help from some of the student conductors such as Adrian Lydon, and much of the orchestral and the choral music is specially arranged by veteran lecture Siubhán Ó Dubháin, conductor from the very first Christmas concert back in 2003. The project will involve Music Generation Louth, together with a wide variety of other groups including Culture Connect, researching and
gathering songs with the aim of building a unique and culturally diverse collection of world song for Louth. It is a new way of working for Music Generation Louth, allowing it to address issues of peace building, sectarianism and racism in its work on a cross border basis. Music Generation Louth Coordinator, Gemma Murray, explained, “Songlines is an additional part of our programme for 2013 in which
we are launching several new singing and choral initiatives for children and young people. It is a particularly exciting project for us because it helps us connect with such a diverse range of communities as a means of building better relations in the local community”. The Project is supported by the European Union’s PEACE III Programme as awarded by Louth Peace and Reconciliation Partnership.

the HONDA CR-Z
The revised Honda CR-Z hybrid has gone of sale. The 1.5 petrol engine has been revised with an updated ECU which has increased the power by 7PS from 114 PS to 121 PS. There is now a Lithium Ion battery rather than a Nickel-metal hydrid which boosts the electric power to 20 PS instead of 14 PS. This equates to an overall improvement of 13 PS which shave 0.9 seconds off the 0-100kph/62mph time of the Sport model, which now accel-
erates to 100kph/62mph in 9.1 seconds. The GT model will now do 0-100kph/62 mph in 95. Seconds with both having a top speed of 200kph/124mph. Acceleration is helped by the Sport Plus (S+) boost system which is engaged by pressing the S+ button on the steering wheel, an electric boost kicks in when the accelerator is pressed to give up to 10 seconds of increased acceleration. According to Honda fuel economy and CO2 emissions

For the 2013 CR-Z there has been the introduction of two new colours Aurora Violet and Energetic Yellow. KIA CEE’D TOP SAFETY MAIN KIA DEALER
REOPENING
s
l e
The all-new Kia cee’d has been awarded a maximum 5-Star accident safety rating by Europe’s leading road safety organisation, EuroNCAP. l The five-door hatchback achieved high scores for Adult Occupant Protection (89%), Child Occupant Protection (88%) and Safety Assist equipment (86%), recording the maximum possible score in the dynamic element of the Child Occupant Safety test. EuroNCAP testers were also impressed with the inclusion of electronic stability control across the entire new cee’d range in Europe ahead of it becoming a compulsory test criteria. “The previous generation
cee’d was the first Kia to achieve a 5-star EuroNCAP rating. In the last five years, testing criteria have become tougher, making it harder for manufacturers’ products to be awarded top marks. It is a testament to Kia’s on going commitment to vehicle safety that we are able to once again achieve a high score for the cee’d,” comments Benny Oeyen, Vice President Marketing and Product Planning, Kia Motors Europe. “From the outset of the new model’s development, Kia’s engineers were dedicated to creating a car that delivers sophistication and refinement as well as the very best safety technology to protect drivers, their
families and pedestrians in the event of an accident,” concludes Oeyen. Standard safety equipment fitted to the new cee’d across Europe includes six airbags (front, side and curtain), seatbelt reminders (front and rear), ESC (Electronic Stability Control), HAC (Hill Assist Control) to prevent roll-back, VSM (Vehicle Stability Management) and ESS (Emergency Stop Signal) which flashes the brake lights when the driver is making an emergency stop. The new cee’d joins five other Kia models, Rio, Venga, Soul, Sportage and Sorento, in scoring a 5-Star rating in EuroNCAP crash test results.
More details on the Chevrolet Trax mentioned previously on these pages. The compact SUV has a foot print of 4,248 mm in long by 1,776 mm wide with a wheelbase of 2,555 mm. With the seats up, the boot can carry 358 litres of cargo. There are total of eight seating combinations available, including a 60/40 split rear seat and a front passenger seat which can be folded flat which increases the maximum load space to 1,370 litres. The Trax engine comprises three engines – a 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol unit, a 1.6 litre petrol engine and a 1.7 litre turbo-diesel engine. The 1.4L turbo petrol engine is only available as an AWD (4x4) system and outputs 140 hp, producing a maximum torque of 200 Nm. The AWD system is also available on the 1.7 litre diesel unit. The 1.7 diesel engine (available in manual with either 2WD or AWD all-wheel-drive) will output 130 hp and produce a maximum
torque of 300 Nm. Available with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission (not available with AWD). CO2 emissions for the 1.7L diesel engine are 120g/km. All powertrains with manual transmission come with Start/ Stop functionality. There will be a choice of two trim levels for the Trax which is set to rival Nissan’s Juke. The LS trim level features 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, remote central locking, rear parking sensors, front fog lights and auto headlights together with Blu-
etooth compatibility. The LT trim level adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a rear parking camera, light-sensitive rear view mirror and leather steering wheel and gear knob, as well as the Chevrolet Mylink infotainment system as standard. Mylink allows content from smartphones to be viewed on seven-inch colour TFT screen. A dedicated navigation app is available to download onto compatible smartphones displaying the route from the smartphone onto the system’s touch-screen.
