Happy Christmas for new millionaire By Paul Byrne and Niamh Kirk
ONE lucky punter is certain to celebrate a Happy Christmas after scooping to Lotto jackpot over the weekend. Dundalk can welcome a new millionare after Saturday’s winning lotto ticket of €3.59 million was sold in Carroll’s News Agents, Longwalk SC. The ticket, a €4 quickpick with lotto plus, was bought in the newsagents on Friday November 23 but as yet the identity of the winner is unknown. By the time we went to print it had not yet been claimed. Sinead McCreesh who works in the newsagents says they have absolutely no idea who might have
bought the winning ticket as Friday is their busiest day in the shop and there would have been a lot of lotto tickets sold. “We’re delighted to have sold the winning ticket here in the shop and we would all like to wish the winner well and hopefully they will enjoy their big win. We’ve never sold a winning ticket here before so it’s nice to be part of all the excitement” said Sinead. This is the second big lotto win in Dundalk after someone scooped the €2 million jackpot in July. Since the lotto began in 1988 around €54 million has been won in the county. See page 12
Rock girls book date with Louis Walsh
A group of Blackrock dancers proved that they really have the X Factor as they qualified for the final of the annual School Stars competition. In front of a packed house at the TLT Theatre, the seven young girls qualified for the final and their reward is a date with none other than XFactor Judge Louis Walsh on Tuesday December 4. Having started out with over 3,000 competitors in early auditions held in October, the Blackrock girls, known as “MEGASTARS”, have made it through to the final, competing against National Schools from Dublin, Meath, Louth and Monaghan. The MEGASTARS dance troupe now have their opportunity to win the competition outright and are

Tips on how to improve retail By Niamh Kirk
Retail Ireland placed Dundalk and Ardee in the bottom quarter of their Town and City Review 2012. The reviewer interviews residents and stakeholders in towns across Ireland to see how they rate them based on a number of set criteria including retails mix, parking, mobility and more. Two Co Louth towns were placed in the bottom quarter of Ireland’s Top 100 places to live, Drogheda also failed to reach the national average leaving it top of the bottom half at 58.
GOLDSTAR
During the process Retail Ireland came to see the criteria that led to one town being considered better than another. The main ones being whether there is a good retail mix on the main street, whether parking is easily available and if there is a healthy eating and entertainment scene, and if people generally feel safe. The more positive people were about these, the more highly rated the town was on the list. There were a number of recommendations on how to tackle the key issues. Setting up ‘Town Teams’ that embrace
all strands of a town’s society, with a clear mandate and that would effectively and energetically communicate what town authorities are doing. In parking they advise that the quality of parking must represent the town size. They also said that pay and display parking encourages people to spend less time in town centres. They recommended a pay on departure or a change to pricing policies that would encourage people to use town centre spaces for shop visits and more inconvenient spaces for longer stays. With respect to the
retail mix they advised that town centres should welcome many retailers. The most important aspect of a successful town centre is a mix of local specialists and national/international brands that will create footfall.
They also recommend a focus on the night life of the area, as eating out and entertainment was considered to be the third most important factor in encouraging people into a town after proximity and retail mix.

Former bank for sale at €800k By Niamh Kirk
One of Dundalk iconic buildings the former National Irish Bank (NIB) branch at 13 Earl Street may be occupied sooner than expected after being put up for sale with an asking price of €800,000. The move comes as a part of branch disposals by Danske Bank who took control of NIB in 2005. The property is available for sale or to let. Stephen McCarthy an associate at Saville estate agents, who is handing the property portfolio, said that the previous tranche of NIB properties had performed exceptionally well with purchasers, who were mainly investors and owner occupiers, taking advantage of the low aquistion costs and a favourable capital gains environment. The property has been up for sale for about 12
months but will now be the subject of a push by Saville’s to dispose of Danske Banks Irish property assets. They anticipate a strong response to the next phase of properties which includes the Earl Street building. Given the location , high levels of interest from retailers is expected but considering the size of the building the market may be limited. Mr McCarthy said “Understandably some occupiers may prefer not to purchase a property and may wish to lease instead. This is something our client will consider on a case by
case basis as part of their overall disposal strategy.” The 17,814 sq ft, four-story property has a class two planning permission, enabling financial services., including bookmakers to commence trading straight away. There has already been a bit of interest in the property from local syndicates and investors. Likewise there have been a number of different proposals for the use of the building including mixed office and retail, commercial and mixed commercial use. The asking price is €800k.

Dundalk FC look to new beginning under Stephen Kenny By Eunan Whyte
Dundalk FC’s efforts to re-establish the club as a force in Irish football once again took another important step with the unveiling of a new manager on Thursday. Stephen Kenny was officially confirmed as the new boss at a press conference in Oriel Park and the former Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians and Derry City manager was handed a two-year contract. The club haven’t enjoyed the best of times over the past number of years, but changes at boardroom level during the past year have created a sense of optimism and that has been added to by the appointment of one of the country’s most respected managers. Kenny, admitted that he was under no illusions about the size of the task facing him, but said that the prospect of working with passionate supporters was one of the reasons why he was attracted to the job. “Dundalk has a great tradition as a club and it is a real football town. There is a passionate support base and that was one of the things that attracted me. I believe that if you are any way successful, the

supporters will get behind you. “I know from managing Bohemians in the 2002 FAI Cup Final that there is a great passion for Dundalk as they had huge numbers out that day. “There have been some barren times since then but my job is to get the club back to the top and hope that people enjoy coming to watch the team play”, added Kenny who was also encouraged by the attitude of the board. “From speaking to the likes of Ciaran Bond, Andy Connolly and Paul Johnston,
it is clear that they have a great passion and a vision for the club and I was really impressed by that.”, revealed the manager, who is looking forward to getting down to work. “The good thing is that I am starting with a blank canvas and it really is a new beginning for everyone. We are under no illusions that it is going to take a lot of hard work and we will be looking to get players who are willing to work and are hungry to play for such a great club”, he added.

Student is struck with leg of chair A row over a utility bill resulted in a student being assaulted with the leg of a chair by one of his housemates. As a consequence two Chinese students, Bin Hu and Shang Fan, of 139 College Manor, Dundalk, appeared in Dundalk District Court where they were convicted on assault charges. The court heard that on February 14, 2012, Gardai were called to Rockfield Manor, Dundalk, where the were told by an occupant that following a dispute over a utility bill, he was assaulted. He stated that he was punched by Bin Hu, before the same person struck him with the leg of a chair. He stated that he was punched and pushed by Zhang Fan. Another housemate, who witnessed the incident, stated that the victim had only been struck on the arm, and not on the head. He added that Zhang Fan – who admitted pushing the victim –
had, in the end, acted as peacemaker. The court heard that 24 hours after the incident, the victim suffered a serious medical condition. However, as he had been the victim of an assault on the previous day – an incident not before the court – Insp Martin Beggy said it could not be established that the condition was as a result of the assault on February 14. Solictor, Peter Lavery, stated that both men apologised for their actions and that Hu had €300 in compensation, and Fan a further €200. Judge Flann Brennan stated that he was satisfied there were mitigating circumstances but that it was a serious incident. He convicted Hu of assault causing harm and production of an offensive weapon, and in each case imposed a €250 fine. Fan was fined €250 after being convicted of common assault.
Essential Criteria: 1) Educated to degree level or equivalent 2) Minimum of 2 years experience in managing projects 3) Evidence of well developed business network For further details and an application form contact: accounts@dundalk.ie The Special EU Programmes Body is the Managing Authority for the European Union’s interreg iva Programme.

A man who was described as a scapegoat in the storage of €1.1m of illegal drugs was praised for his efforts in helping investigate the crime. Robert Kennedy of Milltown, Castlebellingham, unwittingly allowed an old house belonging to him to be used to store a quantity of head shop drugs after being told that they boxes contained shelving and storage equipment. The 35-year-old appeared at Dundalk District Court on a charge of allowing his premises be used to store the drugs, where it was made clear that once he became aware of the contents of the boxes he asked for them to be removed. The drugs had been legal but following a change in the law they became illegal and had been subject to an amnesty. In offering a guilty
plea, solicitor Conor Breen stated that the defendant was approached by two men who requested to store shelving and display units in an old run down house. The father of one was living in a mobile home on land adjacent to the house which he was planning to renovate. When he discovered what was actually contained in the boxes he asked one of the men to take them away. However, the boxes were not removed by the men. Mr Breen added that his client had apologised but that he had been under the wrong impression and he thought he was doing a good deed. He had fully co-operated with the Gardai and would continue to do so in the future. The investigating Garda agreed with the comments and stated

The 4 of Us have been confirmed for the Spirit Store this January 26. Brothers Brendan and Declan Murphy will perform an acoustic set of the band’s highlights over the past 20 years with some added new material. In this two hour show the brothers will perform all their hits as they were originally written, acoustically. The 4 of Us shot to the top of the Irish music industry in 1989 when ‘Mary’ which was taken from the band’s debut album Songs For the Tempted, achieved commercial success. Since then they have produced seven studio albums as well as live albums and solo material. Tickets are on sale for the gig in the new venue at the Spirit Store online and in store.
that Mr Kennedy was being used as a scapegoat. He was very cooperative with what was an extensive investigation. He stated that the DPP had consented that the matter could be dealt with at District Court level.
Mr Breen requested that the matter be dealt with as leniently as possible and not to impose a custodial sentence. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to January 2 pending a Community Service report.
TRADYCJA WRÓŻB ANDRZEJKOWYCH sięga czasów pogańskich choć w dokumentach wzmianka o wróżbach andrzejkowych pojawiła się dopiero w 1555 roku. Patronem tego dnia jest Św. Andrzej z Galilei. Wróżby andrzejkowe były sposobem by poznać kandydata na męża. As kier oznacza spokojny i ciepły dom. As karo zapowiada dobrą wiadomość w sprawach miłości. As trefl mówi, że można spodziewać się niespodzianki w miłości. As pik zapowiada partnera władczego i solidnego. Do wielu wróżb wykorzystywane były zwierzęta. Jeszcze inny mówił, aby w wieczór andrzejkowy zerwać gałązkę wiśni i wstawić do wazonu, jeśli zakwitnie w Boże Narodzenie będzie zwiastowała rychłe wesele. Obecnie andrzejki to świetna okazja do spotkań towarzyskich, zatem już 30 listopada, w dniu Św. Andrzeja zapraszamy wszystkich spragnionych wróżb, zaciekawionych co kryją gwiady i karty oraz linie papilarne do Shamrock Pub na Polski Wieczór Klubowy – Andrzejkowy. Tradycyjnie na 20:00tą.

US technology giants Prometric gave the town of Dundalk a lift in November of last year with an announcement that their new European headquarters would be located in Finnabair Park with the promise of more than 100 employees by the year 2014. Almost exactly a year to the day of that announcement Prometric have unveiled their first new product from their Dundalk base with a new app called ‘MyItemWrite’, which is now available for download at no charge. Developed out of Prometric’s global test operations centre in Dundalk, Ireland, MyItemWriter is designed for use on laptop, tablet, PC or smartphone devices and is de-
signed to transform the way organisations develop test questions. This new technology streamlines the test development process and allows content experts to write, review, annotate and approve test items through the App. “MyItemWriter makes the test development process more inclusive of the world’s best minds,” said Michael Brannick, President and CEO of Prometric. “By utilising MyItemWriter, organizations can invite any subject matter expert with an Internet connection to contribute to their exams.” MyItemWriter was developed completely in their Dundalk base and according to Innovation manager, Simon Cowan, the app took 2800 working hours to complete.
Prometric’s test development operation is one of the newest high-tech multi-nationals to locate in Ireland, and the development of MyItemWriter is among the first major developments out of its Dundalk facility. According to senior manager Kevin Kane, who flew in from the states to visit the Dundalk plant, Prometric are delighted with how things are progressing so far in Ireland. “We currently employ 56 people here in Dundalk and we are ahead of all the targets we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year.” says Kevin. “We would be confident that we will be employing about 150 people by the year 2014. These are very exciting times for this plant.” he added.

Matthews scoop national award

Matthews Coach Hire has scooped a major national honour at the SEAI Sustainable Energy Awards 2012. The innovative local coach company won the prestigious Energy Awareness Award at an awards ceremony in Dublin on Thursday, beating off competition from Tesco and Veolia, operators of the Luas. Matthews received the award for initiating procedures to raise awareness of energy
efficiency across employees on a much more personal level. “We are thrilled with this award, as it represents our energy saving work across the company over a number of years,” said Fleet and Quality Manager Noel Matthews. “When you look at the companies that were also nominated in our category, you will get an idea of the scale of our project and achievement.
“This energy saving project has allowed us to reduce fuel consumption from 30 litres per 100km to 27.23 litres per 100km (10.4mpg), which makes a huge difference across our fleet. “Our vehicles are often driven by two or more drivers per day, making it impossible to pin fuel usage to any one individual using standard fuel management techniques”, he stated.

ATTHEWS Coach Hire are moving their Dundalk town stop to Marshes Shopping Centre from Saturday December 1 onwards. The innovative coach company will be moving to dedicated passenger facilities at the Main (Pillars) Entrance of Marshes Shopping Centre from Saturday December 1. This will replace the existing stop on the Dublin Road and Matthews Coach Hire will no longer
stop or pick up from that point. “We have had to vacate our existing stop on the Dublin Road due to upcoming redevelopment work and the removal of current parking arrangements for passengers and coaches,” said Matthews Coach Hire Managing Director Paddy Matthews All other existing scheduled stops and times will not be affected by this move. Matthews’ passengers will find purpose-built bus shelters, access
to shopping and refreshments and a dedicated park and ride car park operated by Marshes Shopping Centre at the new stopping point. Secure parking operated by Marshes will be available to Matthews regular customers at a monthly rate of €30 – working out at a euro a day. “We are constantly looking at ways in which we can improve our service,” said Matthews Coach Hire Managing Director Paddy Matthews.
“Passenger facilities will be better at our new home at Marshes and the route travel times will remain the same, with the service operating via the Avenue Road. “We are sure that our thousands of regular customers will agree that this move will make their travelling experience even better.” Harry Traynor, Marshes Shopping Centre Manager said: “Marshes are delighted to be the new transport hub for Matthews Coach Hire bringing an upgrade

in service standards with access to high street shopping and excellent facilities. “Park n Ride customers are advised to arrange parking passes in advance by contacting our Car Park office on 042 9395240 and should use the marked centre lane for access to the parking area on Car Park 3. “We look forward to working with Matthews and their ever-improving services.”

Cuchualainn CC regain their position as the best cycling club in Ireland For the second time in three years Dundalk’s Cuchulainn Cycling Club has been voted as Ireland’s best cycling club. This award is bestowed upon the club by the governing body for the sport Cycling Ireland, who came up with a list of what they believe are the most active clubs in the country and ballot all of its members to find the club that has contributed most to the sport in the past 12 months. With over 500 clubs in the country, competition was fierce to even make the short list, let alone be voted the overall winner. It was Cuchulainn’s range of activities that drew in the votes as throughout the year the
club organises many events for children, leisure cyclists and through to competitive open events. Locally the club runs three successful leagues during the summer months, a mountain bike league, a women’s only league and the main FPM Accountants League. Some of the highlights during the year were the staging of a round of the mountain biking National Points Series, the National Championships for the junior riders. While leisure cyclists found the unique Summer Solstice Dusk till Dawn Century ride. Rather than rest on their laurels plans for 2013 are already taking shape. First up in January
Members of Cuchulainn Cycling Club receive the award for Cycling Club of the year from Nicholas Roche L-R Sé Weston, Michelle Dolan, Karl Dolan, Nicholas Roche, Pat O`Shaughnessy, Martin Grey, Kevion Dolan, Pat Kilboy
the club will be hosting the National Cyclocross Championships in Muirhevnamor Park. In June the club will be hoping to run the Elite National
Championships, where Nicholas Roche will look to win the Green jersey before embarking on the Tour de France. The Tour of Louth will be back, bigger and
better, but rest assured it won’t be longer than 100km. Finally the club’s BMX department continues to groom the stars of the future, as they hone their skills at
St. Mary’s College. The next event for the club is the annual Awards Night and Christmas Party on December 7 at Ridleys, tickets at the door.
Criticism of staff hours cuts made in Louth hospitals More than 3,200 staff hours have been cut in the Louth Meath Hospital group since last year. Figures released by the HSE to Sinn Fein on request show that there has been a
90% reduction in agency and overtime in the Louth County Hospital alone and up to 40% cut in Drogheda’s Our Lady of Lourdes. The cuts equate to a reduction of 87 members staff.
Deputy Gerry Adams described the cuts as shocking and challenged the Government TDs to stand up for the Louth patients by calling for an end to cutbacks. He said that the
reductions were a threat to patient care and warned that the implications would be enormous when combined with a further reduction of €900m from December’s Budget.
“The cuts are placing health provision under enormous strain. There is a real risk of further bed closures, ward closures, increased numbers of patients on trolleys”, he stated.
Stage is set for Pinocchio at Town Hall
The talented people in RehabCare in Dundalk are taking to the stage again this December to perform their brand new production of the well loved story of ‘Pinocchio’ . With a cast of over 40 people the production will take place in Dundalk’s Town Hall between Tuesday December 4 and Friday 7 of December with tickets costing €10 and €5. All the proceeds from the show will go to RehabCare and Crumlin children’s hospital and Paudie Murphy, a programme facilitator in RehabCare hopes people will come along and enjoy the show. “We’ve been working hard with this production since back in June and everybody is more or less ready now for the shows coming up in December. We have a cast of over forty people who have mild disabilities and the entire concept and the script were developed by them all” explained Paudie. “We’ve kind of put our own unique spin on the story of Pinocchio and hopefully everybody who comes to see it will enjoy it as much as the cast enjoy performing it. We’d also like to say a big thank you to the Clan Na Gael GAA Club for giving us a room for rehearsals over the past few months.” added Paudie. Proceeds from the show will be split between RehabCare and Crumlin Hospital. Tickets are available from the Dundalk Town Hall Box Office now. For further information call directly to the Box Office at 0429392919 or call Sandy in RehabCare at 0429328766.

Louth County Museum was the venue last Friday evening for the premiere of ‘Who’s the Daddy?’, a film written and produced by young adults attending a course delivered by CREATE (Cox’s and Redeemer Education and Training Enterprise) in Cox’s Demense. The film is a commentary on the social issues within the trainees’ community. The trainees also acted in the film, edited it and transferred skills they acquired throughout the course to several other media projects, while
DKIT made facilities available. The CREATE course took place over an eight month period and during this time the trainees covered seven topics in depth; Communications, Application of Number, Career Preparation, Computer Literacy, Digital Media, Media Expression and Internet Skills. CREATE’s first set of trainees graduated from the course on the night and received their certificates. Two special awards were presented; Trainee of the Year went to Paul Wat-
ters for the leadership skills he displayed throughout the course and Actor of the Year went to Michael Taaffe for his
ability to portray a wide range of characters in varied scenarios. During the course the trainees visited BBC in Belfast and TV3.

for the final is exceptional and this is only one reason why Louis Walsh is returning once again to the TLT, prising himself away from London and the XFactor final for the night. The MEGASTARS representing Blackrock are drawn from the two national schools in the village, St Francis National School and St Oliver Plunketts National School. Commenting during the week, St Francis National School principal, Oreena Lawless said that “not alone were the girls representing their schools and the village, but they are now the only remaining contestants from the greater Dundalk area.” Hip hop outfit, the MEGASTARS have made quite an impression in previous rounds with the assistance of choreographer, Amanda Lane. Megastars have had numerous well wishers, including Blackrock School principal Angela McAdam, who wishes them the best of luck in the finals.

new subaru Forester volvo v60 hybrid
An all-new Subaru Forester is set to go on sale in the summer of 2013. Although details are sketchy at the moment, we do know the fourth generation Forester will feature either a 150 ps 2.0 litre petrol or 150 ps diesel boxer four cylinder engine with a turbocharged 280 ps petrol engine at some point in the future. The new Forester is promising
better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions, whist retaining Subaru’s unique Symmetrical AWD (All-Wheel Drive) system. There will be the option of a six speed manual transmission or a ‘CVT’ Lineartronic box for those who prefer to keep both hands on the wheel. The driving dynamics have been improved offering better handling and refinement. In cab-
in noise has been reduced and the ride has been revised. Getting in and out should be easier with wider opening doors and lower sills. There will be better cargo carrying potential with the option of a power operated tailgate. Subaru is also promising a better quality interior with softtouch plastics and more interior space.
Locksmiths
Volvo are readying themselves for the new Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid with first customer deliveries expected in early 2013. The first 1,000 units of the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid are only available in a “Pure Limited” edition with Electric Silver livery with aero-designed 17inch wheels, integrated exhaust
tailpipes and a number of bodywork features in glossy black. The Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid is the world’s first production first diesel plug-in hybrid and is being built at Volvo’s Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden. The driver is able to select three driving modes Pure, Hybrid and Power via buttons on the dashboard. In the ‘Pure Mode’, the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid is capable of travelling
up to 32 miles (50 k/ms) under pure electric power with zero emissions. In the ‘Hybrid Mode’, the V60’s fuel consumption is quoted as 2.2l/100km -130mpg (48 g CO2 /km) or the driver can use the ‘Power Mode’ to gain the combined capacity of the diesel engine and electric motor to create 215+70 horsepower, 440+200 Nm of torque with acceleration from 0-100kmh/62mph in 6.1 seconds.
