Town is honoured as scouts spiritual home By Paul Byrne
DUNDALK can justifiably declare itself to be the spiritual home of the 35 million strong worldwide scouting movement and to recognise this fact a special ceremony was held in Aiken Barracks. According to Michelle Boyle of the 1st/2nd/5th Louth Scout Group with research showing scout founder, Robert Baden Powell, formed many of his ideas whilst stationed in Aiken Barracks. Group Leader Michelle was speaking in the wake of last Friday’s Group Council in the Aiken Barracks where the group presented a plaque to Sergeant Lou Casey in honour of Lord Baden Powell who served in the barracks between 1894 and 1895. “We did a bit of research a

he would bring the soldiers out to Ravensdale forest and teach them some basic survival skills which he thought would be useful to them.” explains Michelle.
“It was these same techniques and skills which he would use to form the scouting movement proper in 1907. See pages 12 & 15
Dundalk Stadium is set for a spectacular night of rock this Saturday night as some of the town’s most celebrated bands get together for a special fundraiser. Kenyon (Kenny) Meyler, a cousin of the events’ organisers, brothers Daire and David Stanley from Blackrock, was attacked in Perth, Australia in early February and tragically passed away a week later. His body was transported back to Ireland to be buried in Wexford only last week. Full story on Page

Dundalk retailers and representatives from the Chamber of Commerce met with Seamus Kirk, Fianna Fail TD for Louth after he invited them to give their views on how to tackle the growing black market. A recent report by Retail Ireland shows that Ireland has a large and invasive black market by international standards. In particular, the border region sufferers from higher penetration of black market goods
which damages legitimate retailers and costs jobs. And, as the recession continues, the black market is growing, threatening jobs and business in the area. Illicit fuel and contraband cigarettes remain the core products bolstering the black market in the north east region. And they are hitting the pockets of retailers, consumers and the local authorities hard. The Chamber of Commerce reiterated their stance against changing the green dye marking
the difference between diesel used for private and agricultural use. They feel that the proposal will not be effective in the long-run. “We need to remove the anomalies that allow the trade to continue. We have been here before. A rebate of to farmers and contractor is the way to go”, stated Chamber President Paddy Malone. The difficulty in striking the right balance between health issues and revenue intake was at the fore when dealing with counterfeit and illegally
imported cigarettes. An increase in man power would be a good place to start according to Mr Malone. “There are channels of supply out there that are not too hard to find,” he said. He suggests while trying to find that balance, giving Customs the man-power to put up checkpoints to intercept contraband cigarettes en route to the shops. The meeting did show that the local retailers are well informed about the black market and many took heart that the issue
was still being taken seriously. Mr Malone reminded that the black market problem needs to be ad-
dressed seriously. “. What we need now is constructive, realistic proposals on how to fix it,” he said.

A Garda had to receive medical attention after being injured in the course of an arrest of a man on foot of a bench warrant. Michael Murden of 529, Aisling Park, Dundalk, started lashing out at Gardai and attempted to escape while being taken from his home to a patrol car on February 27, 2013. As a result, Mr Murden, appeared at Dundalk District Court that afternoon where it was stated that he was also in breach of bail conditions imposed by the court. The court heard that at 8.35am, three Gardai went to arrest Mr Murden but as they were taking him to the patrol car he started
kicking and lashing out. One Garda suffered a hand injury and assistance was called for. It was stated that the defendant was observed by a Garda on Castletown Road one afternoon, which ws in breach of bail conditions. Mr Murden denied that he had left his home and stated that the Garda was mistaken. He stated that he had not appeared in court on the previous occasion because his sister was not available to read the letter sent to his house. The court was told that Mr Murden had been given a place in a treatment centre in Clogherhead in January, but left after a
week, which was another breach of bail conditions. He explained that he had left the centre to be with his sick grandmother, but was now willing to return. Judge William Hamill remarked that on a previous occasion he had granted bail in the “teeth of opposition from Gardai”, and noting that those conditions had been breached he remanded the defendant in custody to Clover Hill District Court on March 6. Mr Murden had been charged with burglary, theft, criminal damage and public order offences on dates between November 21, 2012, and January 14, 2013.
The last few seasons have proved to be a difficult period for Dundalk FC but they start the season this Friday night with a renewed sense of optimism having successfully saved the club from near extinction in 2012. Michael Rafter’s heroics in Waterford last November ensured Dundalk stayed in the top flight and ended what was a turbulent year on a positive note for the
Lilywhites. The Carrick Road side spent much of last season fighting financial woes but the club was saved thanks to a very successful ‘Save our Club’ initiative which brought in some much needed funds. Further good news came out of the club late last year with the news that the Dundalk Trust and Fastfix were teaming up to lead the club into what will hopefully
be a golden era. This Friday evening sees the League season kick off against age old rivals Shamrock Rovers in what promises to be a mouthwatering clash in Oriel Park. Stephen Kenny is the man entrusted with leading the club for the new campaign and he has assembled a new squad which he hopes can compete in what will be a tough season.

Gamers take XBox to new level By Niamh Kirk
A team from DkIT have won ethe prestigious gaming award at ethe national finals of global tech ecompetition, Microsoft’s Imag.ine Cup. They also came second nin the overall competition. a Team, CLOCK in ROCK, sconsists of Jason Stewart from eDunleer, Andrew Killingbeck rfrom Blackrock, Nicholas Murnray from Ardee as well as David eMullis from Dungloe, all DkIT nComputing and Games Develop, ment students. Their mentor is DkIT lecturer Derek O’Reilly. The team developed ‘Liminal o Magobrawl’, a game for the X eBox Kinect. Using the Kinect, -the on-screen characters mimic ethe motions of the real life playn -
ers, so your character moves like you. In the two-player fighting game you have to complete a series of motions, your game character copies them and shoots fireballs or magic spells at your opponent to win. David Mullis described it as “Street Fighter meets Harry Potter.” The award is a huge accolade as the Imagine Cup is one of the industry’s top prizes, and the aim is to have the winners of today transform the gaming experience and design the computer games of the future, according to David. “It was a really positive experience for all of us, we did a lot of extra work for the competition but it was worth it. The people from Microsoft were really nice
and very enthusiastic about getting the game on the market,” explained David. The team will now apply to represent Ireland at the international finals in St Petersberg, Russia this July. There they could be competing against games developers from all over the world in a bid to win the $50k top prize and an accolade that will undoubtedly make them among the most desireible candidates for jobs once they have completed their degrees. Whether they make it to Russia or not, the many hours the team put into developing the game will be plain to see as their aim is get the game on the market as soon as possible and hope to release it on X Box Live soon.

Students get their first view inside Colaiste Lu By Niamh Kirk
Bright and early on Saturday morning new students and parents arMichelle McArdle, Stabannon, winner of the Louth County Board/Jim McDonnell rived at Ireland’s newest Sponsored €100 voucher and tickets to Louth V Galway game receiving her prizefrom Jim McDonnell with Stephen O Connor PRO Louth County Board and Paddy Gaelcoláiste, in Chapel Keenan Street, Dundalk. Coláiste Lu is County Louth’s first all-Irish post primary school where the students are embracing the language with gusto and are determined to be educated ‘as Gaeilge’. Many of the students are from primary schools in Louth, but some are travelling from as far away as Dublin, Meath and Armagh to come to the new school. About one third of the students are choosing to move from an English based curriculum to learning at second level through Irish. Karen Duffy from Reaghstown was there with her daughter Grace and brought her Gaelgóir mother Anna Lambert from Roscommon along

too. “Although Grace is not in a Gealscoil, she has a gra for the Gaelic. It will be a huge transition at second level but they pick it up very quickly”, said Karen. Some of the parents who haven’t spoken Irish since they were at school admit to being a bit nervous over helping their children. However they were won over by their enthusiasm for the language
and look forward to having to improve too. Caitlin Boylan, who with her husband Patrick say they are far from fluent which made them a bit apprehensive at first. “She was so interested though, and when she got the letter to say she was accepted she was so delighted. “She wanted to do something different and of course we’ll help her.” After a brief introduc-
tion in the lounge the students went upstairs to start the test, using, laptops, iPads and traditional pencil and paper. With the shared interest the Irish language obvious to each other, the small group of young people make friends quickly. They switch easily between speaking in Irish and English as they chat excitedly about the subjects they plan to take. Coláiste Lú will also
be piloting the short courses on the new junior certificate. The students who are more fluent are happy to help their new friends along and the students coming from learning through English are confident they will pick it up soon. Sitting on a bright red bean bag in the school lounge, incoming student Naoise Callan who attends a Gealscoil said she wanted to keep up the language. “I love it. I enjoy speaking it and it’s our native language and I don’t want to lose it”, she explained. Beside her, Claire Ward who will be learning all her subjects through Irish for the first time said she’s not nervous. “It’s comfortable here, different. It’s relaxed,” she said. Colaiste Lu is due to open for first years in September.

A man with 100 previous convictions was fined €200 at Dundalk District Court after pleading guilty to stealing two bottles of wine from a supermarket. Eugene Myles, 370 Beechmount Drive, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk,
admitted the offence which took place at Londis, Castletown Road, on September 12, 2012. James MacGuill stated that the 34-year-old had a troubled time in his young years but the offences were not as frequent recently. The defendant paid €12 compensation.

Teen was in wrong place at wrong time A 19-year-old man who was described as being in the wrong place at the wrong time escaped a conviction after the Probation Act was applied. The man, who was a passenger in a stolen car at Point Road, Dundalk, on July 22, 2012, was charged with unauthorised carriage.
The court heard from solicitor Sean T O’Reilly that his client was unaware the car had been stolen. “He was picked up by aquaintances who are no longer his friends. I have discussed the matter with his parents and he is deeply ashamed as the matter has had a profound effect on his
life. He was totally co-opeartive with the Gardai”, explained Mr O’Reilly who added that his client was anxious to avoid a conviction. Following a consultation with the defendant, the Probation Officer stated that it appeared the incident was a one-off and that the defendant was in the wrong
place at the wrong time. She added that she did not believe he would benefit from coming under the observation of the probation service as the incident had provided a salutory lesson. Judge William Hamill stated that he would dismiss the case under the Probation Act.
Cuchulainn CC’s Killeavy cycle Cuchulainn Cycling Club had another productive weekend as a huge group of club cyclists headed off to Killeavy on Sunday morning to complete a 60km charity cycle, raising money for Down Syndrome. However the Cuchullain cyclists were not happy with just 60km, so they cycled from Dundalk in the morning and home again to clock up a nice even 100km for the day. The spirit of the club could be seen when Philip Kerley suffered his third puncture of the day and while looking at the prospect of phoning home for the broom wagon up stepped Sarah Fagan with a spare tube. Next Sunday the leisure cyclists will head to Camlough for their cycling event. The competitive cycling continued with members taking part in races in Newry and Navan.

First ever Dundalk Book Festival Dundalk Leader 6th March 2013

By Niamh Kirk
Dundalk’s bookworms are wriggling with delight now the town is to host its first ever book festival this spring. Popular crime writers, women’s authors, children’s storytellers and novelists will be holding talks and workshops over the festival weekend for both avid readers and budding writers. The town centre will be buzz-
ing with lovers of literature as the events take place in Dundalk’s cultural landmarks like An Táin Theatre and the County Museum as well as Carroll’s Bookshop and town centre cafes. Detailed plans for the book festival are not yet finalised as yet but the organisers can reveal some of the famous authors that will be visiting Dundalk like crime writers Declan Burke and Declan Hughes as well as women’s writ-
ers like Claudia Carroll. The festival will cater for readers both young and old as author of the Ask Amy Green books, Sarah Webb will also appear. It is not just the traditional written word appearing at the festival as graphic novelists will also be featured including local artist/author Tommy Kelly. The festival is the brain-child of Ann Cleary from the DkIT Library, who has put together a
team of volunteers to organise the festival. DkIT writer in residence Ferdia Mc Anna is on the team. “Ferdia has been holding creative writing classes in DkIT since becoming the writer in residence. There was such a high demand for the classes it was obvious there was a large literary community in the north east”, explained Ann. “We just thought, wouldn’t it be great to have a book festival, we talked it over and decided it
was a good idea. None of us had done one before,“ said Ferdia. A book of short stories by 33 Dundalk based writers is also going to be published in the lead up to the festival. “There are a lot of emerging writers and the quality is fantastic. I hope that some of these writers will make their mark very soon,” said Ferdia. The first chapter of the Dundalk’s Book Festival opens this Friday April 26.

Family honour tragic cousin
From page 1 David who is a bassist with one of the featured bands said that the repatriation could have taken much longer if not for the effort of the Claddagh Association, who help raise money for Irish emigrants in Western Australia during times of need. Claddagh Association, he says, were instrumental in Kenny’s repatriation and his family wanted to repay their kindness and help them continue their work Down Under.
A concert fundraiser was their first instinct and fundraisers are being held in both Dundalk and Wexford. “We are trying to raise the money that they spent, so that if, God forbid, they have to help someone in the same way again, the funds will be there,” said David. On the night Dundalk bands Permanent De’ja Vu, RichardRichard, The Curtain Thieves and David’s group Bulls On Parade will all take to the stage.
But there is a wave of excitement growing following the announcement that Dundalk’s original funk-rockers, The Realm, are making a return to the stage after a long absence. The members, Ciaran Wynne, Paddy Martian, Ian Harold and Liam Molloy have all been involved with various bands after The Realm called it a day in 2004. But the catchy guitar riffs and clever lyrics on songs like ‘C’est Jean Baptisie’ and ‘Man Ma-
chine’ that pumped from venues like the AOH and Rock the Planet are still fondly remembered. They got back together last year to help out DkIT video students who wanted to record a video for one of their best known songs, ‘St Paddy.’ This time the boys will be back with a full set of tracks. The event kicks off at 9pm in Dundalk Stadium, and all proceeds go to the Claddagh Association.
Chance to revive memories of PJ Carrolls A special documentary will be airing on LMFM Radio this Bank Holiday Monday March 18, reliving the days of the former PJ Carrolls Factory in Dundalk. ‘The Last Smoke’ is a 90-minute programme, and is produced and presented by local journalist, Colm Corrigan. PJ Carrolls’ Dublin Road factory ceased production for good in the summer of 2006, bringing an end to the company’s 182-year association with the town and its people.
1824 when its founder opened his first tobacco factory and store, at 38 Church Street. That address remained the hub of the operation until 1970, when the company moved its main production base to the state of the art plant on the south side of town. Now, many of the ex-employees whose time with the company involved working in both factories, have come together to reminisce on the ‘good old days’, when work was plentiful and the pay generous.
the documentary will also include contributions from members of the Carroll family, who maintained a very strong association with the company up until the 1980s. The documentary will also include references to the company’s sponsorship of sporting events, as well as the task of sourcing tobacco from abroad, particularly America. The programme will be broadcast at 1.10pm on Monday March
The Blackrock St Patrick’s Day Festival committee have invited all local sports clubs, schools, businesses, residents and any other organisations who wish to participate in the upcoming St Patrick’s Day parade to contact the following people for further information. Market Square safety audit A safety audit which took place at Market Square following issues raised by town councillors has resulted in town engineer Catherine Duff making two main changes to the layout of the area. The two main actions arising from the audit comprise an introduction of a Zebra crossing at the Demesne (near Vodafone) approach to the square, as recommended by the design-
ers in order to provide for increased visibility at this crossing location and to alert drivers to the pedestrian nature of the Market Square. There will also be a conversion of pedestrian crossings at Earl St to Puffin crossings (ie controlled by pedestrian activated lights), as recommended by the designers in order to remove any confusion for drivers and pedestrians alike. Councillors as well as
the National Council of the Blind had expressed grave concerns over the layout of Market Square citing the pedestrian crossing at Earl St in particular to be extremely confusing. Following meetings with the concerned parties town engineer Catherine Duff agreed to meet with the designers and undertake a safety audit to try and iron out any problems. As well as the two
main actions recommended there will also be other minor changes around Market Square including: addition of litter bins and or bollards at junction with Earl St which is hoped will deter vehicle encroachment and the bolted rumble strips at Crowe St to become a permanent feature. Work on both projects is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Fill up your car for free It wasn’t just the Colaise Ris students who set up their mini companies who benefited from the exercise as one lucky mother walked way with a Mothers’ Day hamper too. When Saoirse O’Connor, Shauna Flanagan, Kerry Clarke and Cassie Stokes got an assignment to set up a small business they made sure they were not the only winners. They decided to hold a raffle for a hamper filled with everything a mum would need for a well deserved pampering. Elieen Connelly who works in the Greenmount Restauraunt was the winner of the Hamper.

Dzień Kobiet jest obecnie oficjalnym świętem w: Albanii, Algierii, Armenii, Azerbejdżanie, Białorusi, Bośni i Hercegowinie, Brazylii,Bułgarii, Burkina Faso, Kamerunie, Chinach,Kubie, Włoszech, Laosie, Kazachstanie, Kirgistanie, Macedonii, Mołdawii, Mongolii, Czarnogórze, Polsce, Rumunii, Rosji, Serbii, Tadżykistanie, Ukrainie, Uzbekistanie,Wietnamie i Zambii. Mężczyźni wręczają wtedy znajomym kobietom – matkom, żonom, partnerkom, koleżankom kwiaty i drobne podarunki. Wszystkim Paniom z okazji zbliżającego się Dnia Kobiet życzymy radości i spełnienia marzeń; Simul Polonia
Ashling Park regeneration scheme
Dundalk Leader 6th March 2013
By Paul Byrne
Councillor Harry Todd has urged council officials to continue to consult with local residents as planning for the Ashling Park Pilot scheme continues with work on the project expected to start later this year The Ashling Park pilot scheme is phase two of the proposed physical and social regeneration of Cox’s Demesne and aims to create a new and vibrant community for the area The scheme for the Ashling Park area, will see 35 new housing units being built along with a community centre, a community garden and a playground. At last week’s Dundalk Town Council meeting Sinn Fein councillor Harry Todd called on town council officials and architects to continue liaising with residents throughout Cox’s Demesne and to listen to any concerns or suggestions they may have. “I would urge those involved with this scheme to work with the people of the area and take heed of what they have to say. This project is a big deal
to the people of the area and I would hope they get a say as to how the scheme is laid out. “I’m delighted that money is being spent in the area and I just hope that it’s done right” added the councillor. Responding to the Sinn Fein councillor, senior executive officer David Storey assured him that residents would be included and listened to at all stages of the project. “We have spoken to the residents at length regarding this pilot scheme and through negotiations we have addressed some of their issues and concerns and taking some of their suggestions on board. We know we have to get this pilot scheme right so the rest of the scheme can run smoothly and with that in mind we have been in constant contact with the local resident association and groups such as Cox’s Connect.” he explained. A walkabout with the architects who designed the project is planned on Saturday morning and next Tuesday night. All local residents are invited to raise suggestions or concerns during this walkabout.

Historic event reignites gender debate Dundalk Leader 6th March 2013
By Niamh Kirk
Two Dundalk sisters marked the build-up to International Women’s Day in fitting style when they made political history. It is a time of year when there is considerable debate about the role of women in politics and it is appropriate that Emer Costello MEP and Senator Mary Moran, made history by being the first sisters to address each other in the Houses of Oireachtas. Both Emer and Mary, from the well known Malone family, are also the first female representatives in the European Parliament and Seanad, respectively, from Dundalk. Currently Senator Mary Moran is the first and only female representative at national level for the county., and to coincide with International Women’s Day, local female public representatives

have shared their experiences. Amid debates on gender quotas and investment in childcare to encourage more women to get involved, most of the local women in politics got involved the old fashioned way, by being negatively affected by changes, cuts or policies and wanting

to do something about it. For Mary Moran it was her experience of support for families where a child has a disability that spurred her into action. “I was giving out about it and Emer said ‘why don’t you do something about it.’ I didn’t have the political experience but I did have the
Dundalk is honoured as scouts spiritual home
From Page 1 “It’s nice to think that the scouting movement which is so popular around the world had its early beginnings in Dundalk.” she added. In 1906 and 1907 Robert Baden-Powell a lieutenant general in the British Army wrote a book for boys about

reconnaissance and scouting which he called Scouting for Boys. In the summer of 1907 Baden-Powell held a camp on Brownsea Island in England to test ideas for his book. This camp and the publication of Scouting for Boys are generally regarded as the start of the Scout movement. At last Friday evening’s group council the Castletown Road scout group presented service awards to five of its members who have notched up over 75 years service between them. A plaque was also presented on the night to the barracks museum in honour of founder Lord Baden Powell. It’s been a very busy period for the scouting movement in Dundalk with news last month that there has been a 20% increase in membership for the 1st/2nd/5th Louth Scout Group on the Castletown Rd.

Town Council Jennifer Green thinks so. “I think as a female in politics you have to ‘prove’ yourself as I don’t feel that men have to do this. I feel that politics is a man’s world, however it is changing, but unfortunately it’s not changing fast enough,” she said. But in these gender differ-
ences lie advantages. Louth County Councillor Edel Corrigan said, “I think because I’m a woman some women have possibly found it easier, or more comfortable, to come to me with their issues or problems. Sometimes people need help with very personal issues and can find it more appropriate for them to talk

to another woman.” County Louth is one of the few remaining constituencies to have never chosen a woman to be a county representative in the Dáil. The causes of this are as varied as the solutions but a gender quota is not a popular answer. “The fact is females are now the largest gender group in Louth, and that should be reflected in political and public life. Personally when voting, I vote for the person I feel can best represent me and my beliefs,” said Cllr Corrigan. Marianne Butler, the first woman elected to the Town Council in 2009, was one of only three female candidates that year, but thinks more women are getting involved but that the demise of town councils is going to have a negative impact of the numbers of woman in politics.

Importance of Being Wilde Dundalk actors Matt Murphy and Stephen Burns are to take to the Dublin stage with their production of The Importance of Being Wilde. The two men, who have been involved in a multitude of Wilde productions over the years have been invited to perform the play in The Viking Theatre, Dublin for a week later this month. The production was first staged in the English Theatre in Malaga, where Stephen Burns is mainly based and Matt travels to and from throughout the year for various productions. It was a resounding success with standing ovations and both Stephen and Matt hope the Dublin audiences will also be impressed.

Renault Clio 200 Turbo
The new Renault Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo will be available to order in 2013 with the first orders scheduled for June. We will be able to confirm prices in a few weeks time. The Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo is powered by 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine outputting 200hp/240Nm via the twinclutch six-speed gearbox. This equates to a 0-100kph/62mph time of 6.7 seconds (it has launch control!) and a top speed of 230kph/143 mph. The official combined fuel consumption is 6.3L/km (44.8 mpg) and CO2 emissions 144g/km. The Clio will be the first car to be fitted with a six speed Renaultsport Efficient Dual Clutch transmission, gears being selected via full-sized steering column-mounted paddle shifters; it even features a multi-change down function. The Renaultsport 200 Turbo features an electronic differential, which is far more responsive than the ESC. As with Megane 265 you have the
choice of choice of two chassis. The optional Cup chassis is designed for even greater dynamics: it is 3mm lower, 15 per cent stiffer and benefits from a quicker steering rack – personally this is an option on our wish list. You can also decide how the car should behave via the ‘R.S. Drive’ button which modifies the mapping of both the transmission (gear shift programming and shift time) and engine (response to pedal position and engine pitch). It also alters the way the ESC and ASR traction control intervene, as well as the weighting of the power steering. There are three modes (‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Race’). The Launch Control system is primed by pressing on the brake with the left foot while at the same time pulling on the two gearshift paddles situated behind the steering wheel. When the accelerator is fully depressed with the car at a standstill, the engine revs to 2,500rpm. In
‘Sport’ mode: When the brake is released, the system optimises its acceleration while wheel spin is controlled by the ASR traction control. Gears shifts are also optimised. When operated in ‘Race’ mode: the ASR traction control is disconnected and gear shifts are entirely manual. This ‘expert’ mode is efficient when grip is optimal, but it is also much more demanding in terms of car control. Renault have worked hard to ensure the Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo is noisy yet legal, so they have fitted R.S. SOUND PIPE which directs the engine noise is amplified mechanically by a membrane and transmitted via a pipe into the cabin. Coupled with the R-Link tablet, this fun application reproduces the sound of several highperformance engines and plays them back via the car’s own loud speakers. A choice of seven sounds is available, three of which are specific to New Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo (Alpine A110, R8 Gordini and Nissan
GT-R). A sound-management algorithm takes into account the engine speed, accelerator pedal position and speed to guarantee an astonishingly realistic sound experience. Parameters like volume can be adjusted using the R-Link screen. Standard Equipment includes a reach and rake steering wheel, heated electric mirrors,
touchscreen satellite navigation (R-Link), hands-free kit, Radio Bluetooth®, USB socket, Bass Reflex speaker system, cruise control, speed limiter, auto windscreen wipers, climate control, body coloured rear parking sensors or rear parking camera (the latter is an option linked to R-Link) and fold-flat rear seat with 60/40 split.
New Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo is available in a choice of five body colours, including the exclusive, emblematic Liquid Yellow, Glacier White, Flame Red, Deep Black and Mercury. The standard 17-inch ‘Renaultsport’ alloy wheels can be upgraded for optional Gloss Black or anthracite ‘Renaultsport’ 18-inch wheels.

new leaf buds
The new updated Nissan Leaf will go on sale some time this year. The Leaf is not a hybrid but purely runs under electric power with zero emissions in use. The Leaf has been on sale for two years in which time over 50,000 have been sold worldwide. The popularity of EV (Electric Vehicles) is on the increase in Europe with an increase in public charging points with increased from 12,000 to more than 20,000 over the last year. There has also been an increase in the number of Nissan Dealers supporting the Leaf – which has increased from 150 a year ago to 1,400 Europe wide. The new model features over 100 changes to its predecessor with the focus on driving range, better charging performance and more equipment choice. One of the key improvements has been to the range which has been increased from around 175km/109miles to 200km/124miles. Changes have been made to the Eco driving mode. A new ‘B’ setting on the transmission increases regenerative braking during deceleration while a separate ‘Eco’ button on the steering wheel extends driving range by altering the throttle mapping to discourage rapid acceleration. The two systems can be operated independently of one another, unlike in the original LEAF. There is a new optional 6.6Kw charger which reduces the charging time from 8 to 4 hours on
a 32 amp supply (you might need an electrician to install a charging socket to use the 32 amp charger on its own dedicated circuit). The lithium-ion batteries are now being produced at a new facility nearby on the Sunderland site. And are now protected with a new warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship for five years/62,000 miles, including a ‘State Of Health’ clause which covers gradual capacity loss over that period. Other technical improvements encompass the powertrain which is now fully integrated incorporating the charger assembly, inverter in one single stack. This has helped to increase the boot space from 330 litres to 370 litres. The steering, chassis and suspension setup have been revised to give a more European
feel to the Leaf, for example the weighting of the steering has been increased to give more feedback. There are now three trim levels for the Nissan Leaf, Visia, Acenta and Tekna. The Leaf Visia models have 16-inch steel wheels with full covers, black door mirror caps and halogen headlights. The Acenta adds 16-inch alloy wheels, suede fabric seat trim, body coloured mirror caps and rear privacy glass. The Tekna comes with 17-inch alloy wheels as standard, LED headlights, the Bose sound system and Around View Monitor (AVM) which displays a 360-degree overhead image of the car on the central display, aidng parking or difficult manoeuvres.
