Conor’s decade of giving hope to kids

ONE of Dundalk’s best known charity workers, Conor Hughes, celebrated a significant milestone recently with the tenth anniversary of the establishment of a care home to look after children in Romania.

Through the Crosscause charity, the Blackrock man has worked tirelessly to improve the plight of children and reaching ten years in existence illustrates just how much a difference Conor and his colleagues have made.

After the fall of the Romanian regime headed by Nicolae Ceausescu in 1990 the full extent of the awful conditions the children were forced to live in was revealed as volunteers from all over the world

By Paul Byrne Despite winning a bumper €3.6 million jackpot on Saturday evening, loyal St Joseph’s GAA clubman Simon Fagan refused to let his side down as he turned up on Sunday morning in Drogheda to umpire a match between the Joes and St Fechins.

40-year-old Simon who lives with his parents near Duffy’s Cross was at home watching the Lotto draw with his mother when he realised his numbers had come up.

News of the €3.6 million win spread fast with family members, neighbours and friends from around the Duffy’s Cross area headed to McCloskey’s pub to celebrate the popular St Josephs stalwarts god fortune.

Official opening indicates Dundalk’s day has come

AN Taoiseach Enda Kenny officially opened the eBay and PayPal facility when he visited Dundalk last week as part of a series of meetings in the area. “Your day has come” he announced as he cut the digital ribbon on the state of the art call centre.

PayPal’s decision to invest in the area was celebrated for the boost it would bring in the midst of the recession.

But this is just the beginning of a long story according to David McManus the company’s president.

when they first viewed the building it felt like home. PayPal president, John Martin, described the facility in Dundalk as the heart of their company, vibrant with different languages and

culture, and bubbling with passion.

Opening his speech An Taoisech Enda Kenny had the crowd laughing as he wryly speculated what might come of “bubbling passion”

and a “never ending honeymoon” the company had with Dundalk.

He said that this was a day for Dundalk to be proud of and that this pride should be taken into the future. “It is

all about getting young people getting to work, and being able to contribute to the local economy. This is your doing and your day has come” he said.

Fine Gael TD for Co Louth Peter Fitzpatrick echoed the Taoiseach’s sentiments saying that the opening is a boost for the area and that Dundalk is “open for business.”

Mr Kenny spoke of his commitment to ensuring the coming generations were educated for the jobs of the future.

Deputy Fitzpatrick said collaborative work is being done with the VEC and DkIT to see more local people develop the skills for the emerging industries.

PayPal’s head of

global operation, John McCabe, has Dundalk roots himself and says the establishment of the facility in Dundalk feels like coming full circle for him.

His grandfather was Eoin McCabe who left Dundalk in 1914 for New York. Now, two generations later his grandson is proud to see

the company lay foundations in his ancestral home.

Labour Senator Mary Moran was also making her way back home in a sense as the land that the industrial estate is built on once belonged to her family. Her mother grew up in a house that was close to where the access gate stands.

Taoiseach met with protests during visit

By Niamh Kirk and Jack Healy There were marked contrasts to the celebrations in eBay and PayPal in Dundalk on Thursday during An Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s lunch meeting with the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce.

Outside the Ballymascanlon Hotel on Thursday last protests took place in a number of locations in the area.

took place outside the hotel where campaigners against the introduction of the Property Tax, cuts to child benefit and antiausterity measures shouted and jeered at cars as they filed into the hotel grounds.

“I can’t afford to pay for these cuts anymore,” said Rosaline Madison who joined the roadside protest.

“We are protesting against austerity, cuts, household charges and every other indecent charge on the people”, she added.

Syd Smith said he was demonstrating because he feels Ireland should follow in the example of Iceland

and investigate the bankers.

While local representatives like Peter Fitzpatrick and Mary Moran did not avoid the demonstration, and drove through the front gate where they were gathered. The main attraction, Enda Kenny, however did not. Many of those at the demonstration said that there were disgusted that he would not acknowledge them. ‘’The people who are outside are the ones being affected by the cuts, not the ones who are driving in their Mercedes,” said Declan Murphy.

A small group of Pro Life supporters had gathered outside PayPal to protest against the coming legislation on abortion. The group had gathered with placards at the entrance to the complex and later moved to outside DkIT. Students also protested against cuts in the income threshold for the maintenance grant at the college when Enda Kenny visited in the afternoon.

Performers Anna Maria Friman Henriksen, Catherine King and Berit Opheim of the renowned Norwegian vocal ensemble Trio Mediaeval visited St Vincent’s Secondary School in Dundalk to present an inspirational choral workshop for members of the school’s chamber choir.

The session, organised by Music Generation Louth in association with Music Network, gave the girls the opportunity to learn some beautiful Norwegian folk songs and to explore

new approaches to choral arranging. It forms part of a series of Music Generation Louth workshops that brings visiting professional performers into local schools.

Members of the school choir also attended the Trio’s evening concert at St Nicholas’ Church in the town, organised by the Louth Contemporary Music Society. They were delighted when invited to join the performers in song for the opening of the second half of the programme.

Dundalk 10k need volunteers

A marshal and volunteer meeting will be held at MINT by Baldwins Earl street Dundalk from 8:30 to 9pm on Wednesday May 1 to discuss the Mint Dundalk 10k.

The MINT Dundalk 10km will take place on May 12 at 4pm and organisers would like to reach out and ask for support. The start of the race is at St Patricks Church and will finish on Market Square.

For the safety of each competitor the organisers need as many marshals and stewards on the course. The route is open to traffic and will be operated on a rolling closure basis and will not affect local business. Every year the race depends on volunteers giving up there time.

Members of the St Vincents School Choir who had a special visit this week

Tidy Towns highlight great efforts Dundalk Tidy Towns organised a special day recently to highlight the steps being taken by the committee to help improve the town’s image and boost tourism.

On a glorious spring day a group of people boarded a bus outside the Town Hall not knowing where they were going or why they were invited. The group consisted of members of Dundalk Tidy Towns Committee, representatives from the local tourist and hospitality sector and officials from Dundalk Town Council.

On board the bus the group were welcomed by Willie Duffy, Chair Dundalk Tidy Towns and he outlined that the day was about showcasing various initiatives undertaken by Dundalk Tidy Towns in support of the Tourism sector.

A Dundalk Tourism DVD was shown which is the result of collaboration between Dundalk Tidy Towns and the Creative Media Department of DKIT. This will be used on websites by people in the hospitality sector wishing to promote Dundalk.

The event also marked the launch of a colouring book devised to promote visiting locations in Dundalk, as with an anti-litter message. This colouring book will be made available to accomodation providers, as well as restaurants that cater for visiting children. It will encourage parents of children to take a closer look around Dundalk as they visit.

The bus then stopped at Quay Street, to view the rejuvenation project undertaken by the Tidy Towns group on some old build-

ings. Some private sponsorship funding made this project possible and now a series of murals recreating the look of the original buildings now adorns the row.

Research into the area was carried out to ensure the refurbishment was as accurate as possible in its links back to the historical and architectural era represented. It has given this area a huge facelift and provides interest to the visitor. It is an example of what can be done on a collaborative basis to enhance the environs.

in Brief Cooley Coast Run

Cooley Kickhams will hold the third annual Coast Run on Friday May 17. The event will be sponsored by Open Hydro Ltd. Both the 12.5k and the 10k will start and finish at the grounds of Cooley Kickhams GFC. The two races will start at 7pm sharp. The event was a great success last year with over 500 people taking part.

Cinema For Over 55s

Realt na Mara Science Week

The national Science Week went off with a ‘big bang’ as the students of Réalt na Mara held a Science Fair in the school hall. Friends and family were invited to see the huge range of experiments the students have been involved in during the year.

The students from Junior Infants to Sixth Class displayed their projects for all to see and almost all of which were interactive for the visitors. These experiments covered all of the forms of science, from showing how the lungs work to the power of magnets and some fun

chemical reactions.

One of the stand out projects was a miniature scale wind turbine which was built by Nathan Mullen a Second Class student in the

school with a love for model making.

He had previously created a miniature hydro-power generator which went on display too.

The atmosphere was exciting and all the children were keen to tell visitors about their findings of their experiments. Along with visiting family and friends, students and teachers came in to see the students’ experiments and try some out.

The events were organised by the school’s science co-ordinator, Kerry Daly, and she says it is hoped that the week will create a long lasting love of all the sciences.

This is the third year Science Week has taken place and the school aims for it to continue for many more years to come.

Tried to hang on to patrol car A man who held on to a patrol car as Gardai attempted to attend to another incident apologised for his behaviour and told Dundalk District Court that he was making efforts to change his bevaviour.

Michael Mallon of 30 Glenmore Park, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk was fined €100 for his actions on January 16, 2012.

The court was told that on that date, Gardai found the defendant

at Glenmore Park under the influence of alcohol and possibly another intoxicant. As the patrol car tried to drive away to attend to another incident, he held on to the vehicle, shouted obscenities and tried to hit the window.

The 23-year-old has another number of previous convictions and has served time in prison.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that although his client has been

known to the court since the age of 13, he hasn’t been convicted of any crimes since this incident which represents the longest period in his life that he has behaved himself.

He pointed out that his client is struggling with addictions but has spent three months in the Victory Outreach centre in Cork and is hoping to attend a similar centre in Dublin.

On Thursday May 2 Dr Una Lynch will share work on ageing and dignity being carried out by the Netwell Centre in Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT). Dr Lynch said “dignity is a word that touches us all deeply. We seem to have an innate sense of its meaning and know when we have been treated with dignity or when a person’s dignity has been violated.”

At the seminar on Thursday Dr Lynch will share insights into how Netwell is using technology to support dignity of older people. Conor Hughes ‘Crosscause’ project which has been helping Romanian orphans for ten years wouldn’t be anything without the dedicated team of volunteers who have helped turn what was once an idea into a reality.

One of those volunteers is Omeath man Ciarán Phillips who first travelled out to Romania in 2007 to help out.

He instantly fell in love with the people of Nicoresti and the residents of Casa Bridget where 16 special needs young adults reside.

Ciarán first became aware of the Crosscause project in 2007 having heard about the good work Blackrock man Conor Hughes had been doing over there.

“I was driving a lorry at the time and I had asked Conor if it would be ok for me to drop in to Casa Bridget on my way back from Moldova

to see for myself what exactly was happening over there” explained Ciáran.

“I fell in love with the place and the people instantly. These people have absolutely nothing yet they are such warm and friendly people. As the days passed I got to know the residents and each of their different characteristics and it was just lovely to see them smile and laugh knowing what they had been through in their early years”, he added.

“Over the years I’ve helped with various building projects over there and just generally helping out where

needed to make the place run smoothly. There is a great camaraderie between the volunteers over there and I think it’s important to note that we as volunteers get much more out of it than we put in.

“I have become very good friends with Conor over the years and he helps make it a very fun and friendly atmosphere over there.

We have great craic at the various fundraisers which are vital to keep the Crosscause projects running. The challenge for us is in sourcing items for building projects and for the kids.

“To see the reaction

of the kids when they receive even the smallest of gifts is a priceless feeling. It really is a privilege rather than a chore to help the project out” said Ciáran.

Ciarán’s wife has been over with him already helping out and he hopes to bring his daughter Ceilí also within the next year. According to Ciaran a few days in Nicoresti would make people thankful for the lives they live in Ireland and make them realise things aren’t quite as bad as they may think.”, concluded Ciarán.

A new day for the volunteers and for the girls had dawned.

Ten years on and “Casa Bridget” has expanded and now cares for 16 full time residents as well as giving 40 local kids in poor circumstances schooling, a hot meal and

showering.

Conor is rightly proud of all that Crosscause has achieved and acknowledges the hundreds of volunteers and sponsors who’ve donated all kinds of materials to the project over the past ten years.

“It’s wonderful to see how much we have developed over the past

ten years and to see the improvement of so many of the children who were living in such squalor.

“To all the volunteers who came, built, carried, painted, loaded, drove and extended love, feel proud. In a small village in a far away country, hearts beat because of you”.

St Vincent’s secondary school Transition Year students plan to evoke the spirit of the 90s when they take their ‘Definitely Maybe’ musical to the stage in May. The original musical was written by teachers in the school and will be performed by transition year students on the 16th, 17th and 18th of May. Transition year students Aoibheann and Catherine McKeown are busy promoting the event and as Aoibheann explains the musical is an affectionate tribute to the music and TV programmes of the 90’s.

“The story revolves around two bands one of which is Oasis and the other which is the Spice Girls. One of the girls from the Spice Girls and one of the guys from Oasis fall in love with each other and the musical deals with the fallout from this and we have to wait and see can their love survive” added Aoibheann.

The transition year students and their teachers have been busy practising for the musical since September and are currently putting the finishing touches to the musical.

“Definitely Maybe” will take place in St Vincent’s Secondary School on the May 16 to 18. The show begins at 7:30pm and tickets are available from the main office in St Vincents.

Steam train trip

The Railway Heritage Society have negotiated a steam train excursion from Dundalk to Dublin Connolly Station on Thursday May 9 and the following are the details of the trip: Departs Dundalk at 12:40pm. Arrives at Connolly Station at 2:15pm.

Music Matters for pre-schools Children at local pre-schools will get to experience the benefits of music at an early age thanks to a new initiative.

Music Generation Louth’s early years programme, Music Matters, gets underway this week with musician in residency programmes starting in 12 pre-schools across Louth.

This is the second

There will be painting, drawing, printmaking, fashion design, metal craft design, graphic design and three dimensional work including ceramics. Web design, digital imaging and graphic design will be shown by the multimedia class.

A variety of photographs will be on display from the photography class. Each piece is representative of a large body of work carried out over the year, it being part of a process encompassing initial ideas and research, to development work towards a conclusion.

While all of the work must be returned to the classroom for assessment and exams after the exhibition, much of the art work will be for sale. This year the class have very kindly decided to donate any monies raised by sale of photographic prints to the Birches Centre, Alzheimer’s Day Care Centre.

Celebrating diversity through sport

It was intercultural week across Dundalk and the Redember boys and girls got involved on two fronts. To encourage the lasting realtionships between children from diverse intercultural backgrounds the school decided to

host games with one of the most international of sports, soccer.

Each class took part in the soccer blitz which was held with a former past pupil and current Dundalk FC player Stephen McDonald.

They also got to put their danc-

ing shoes on as they all learned some ethnic dancing. Congolese dance instructor, Tsibo, taught the students the style and forms of dance from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Dundalk TCCM and Tourist Office are hosting a two-day event with a Local Business Expo on Friday May 3 and Louth Tourism Expo on Saturday May 4.

The Local Business Expo will showcase Dundalk’s business community and is expected to attract a diverse audience. It will create a platform for traders to present their products, services and business ideas to the public.

The Tourism Exhibition on Saturday May 4 is to create awareness not only for visitors to Dun-

dalk, but also to the local residents.

The theme of the event is ‘What’s on your Doorstep’ and a range of tourism providers from Dundalk, and the surrounding area, will take a stall at the event.

Sinead Roche, Tourist Officer for Dundalk has noticed that there is a growing interest in visiting Dundalk “Over the past six months that I have been in the tourist office, large numbers of local people have called in to get information for visiting friends, relatives and

business associates.

1 maja – ta data kojarzy się nam z dniem pracy, hucznie obchodzonym w komunistycznej Polsce pochodami pierwszomajowymi. Wiele osób nie ma pozytywnego wyobrażenia na ten temat, a sama data i święto są nieco wstydliwe w Polsce bo „komunistyczne”. Zabawne, że samo świeto wywodzi się z kolebki światowej demokracji – Ameryki. Święto Pracy, Międzynarodowy Dzień Solidarności Ludzi Pracy, popularnie zwany 1go Maja – obchodzone jest od 1890 corocznie. Święto wprowadziła w 1889 II Międzynarodówka dla upamiętnienia wydarzeń, które miały miejsce w pierwszych dniach maja 1886 r. W Chicago, w Stanach Zjednoczonych podczas strajku będącego częścią ogólnokrajowej kampanii na rzecz wprowadzenia 8-godzinnego dnia pracy.

Na ziemiach polskich pierwsze obchody miały miejsce w 1890 i odbywały się niejednokrotnie wbrew woli zaborców współorganizowane m.in. przez działaczy II Proletariatu. Masowe demonstracje, pochody oraz starcia z carskim wojskiem, policją oraz kozakami, a także wspierającymi je nacjonalistycznymi bojówkami miały miejsce w czasie rewolucji 1905 roku na ziemiach polskich zaboru rosyjskiego, organizowały je głównie Polska Partia Socjalistyczna, Socjaldemokracja Królestwa Polskiego i Litwy oraz BUND. Podobnie liczne pochody i demonstracje klasowych organizacji robotniczych i partii lewicowych, w tym Polskiej Partii Socjalistycznej, żydowskiego BUND-u, nielegalnej Komunistycznej Partii Polski, Polskiego Stronnictwa Ludowego „Wyzwolenie”, Komunistycznej Partii Zachodniej Ukrainy, Komunistycznej Partii Zachodniej Białorusi odbywały się też w ten dzień w okresie II RP, często były one atakowane przez policję oraz nacjonalistycznych bojówkarzy, dochodziło do morderstw działaczy klasowych związków zawodowych i partii lewicowych. Po zakończeniu wojny rząd komunistyczny w 1950 roku nadał dniu 1go maja status święta państwowego, wolnego od pracy i stan ten trwa do chwili obecnej.

W Irlandii podobnie jak w Wielkiej Brytanii świętem jest zawsze pierwszy poniedziałek maja, ten dzień nazywamy Early May Bank Holiday. Tutaj jest to święto wiosny, gdyż maj był miesiącem świetowania nadejście wiosny i organizowania z tej okazji festiwali jeszcze za czasów Celtów.

Skips are removed due to dumping

Skips in Dundalk’s St Patrick’s cemetery are being removed after the service provided for people tending the graves of their loved ones has been abused.

The two large skips at the top left and one at the top right hand side of the cemetery are to be removed after the Burial Board found that it is being used for domestic waste, leaving just three bins remaining.

The skips are there for people who are tending graves to leave old flowers, wreaths and grass clippings; but recently all manner of household waste has been found.

“What is being deposited mostly contains non segregated household waste. Other items found in the bins include televisions, microwaves, a mattress and indeed a front door. Household

waste attracts vermin and wildlife that rip open the bags to gain access to the contents thereby causing it to be blown all over the cemetery,” said Ciaran Rafferty from the Burial Board.

Surveillance of the cemetery by the board and Dundalk Town Council has been ongoing and some offenders have been caught red faced and some fines have been issued. The most common excuse according to the board is that the people feel they are not dumping because it is going into a skip.

“However when they are confronted with the true facts of their actions they are most definitely humbled,” he said Mr Rafferty.

“We are appealing to people frequenting St. Patrick’s cemetery to adhere to their request to only deposit waste

associated with tending graves in the cemetery.

Their co-operation will help the board avoid the prospect of removing all bins from the cemetery.

If anybody witnesses illegal dumping at the cemetery they may contact Environment section Dundalk Town Council to have the matter investigated.”

The board is also requesting that people visiting or tending graves in the lawn cemetery area do not park up on the kerb.

On occasion, cars encroach on graves at the edge of rows causing distress to family members visiting loved ones.

Cricket Club in action

Both senior sides of Dundalk Cricket Club kicked off their 2013 league campaigns this weekend with mixed results. The first team faced Dundrum’s seconds on in Division 8. Dundalk chose to bat first and set a par score of 151 all out. A slow scoring Dundrum never really threatened the score line and good fielding

by Dundalk saw them hold the visitors to 109 all out giving Dundalk a winning margin of 42 runs.

The second team faced Swords Two, who already had one victory under their belt from the previous weekend. Dundalk tried to contain Swords who batted first and went on to score 177 for 4, Dundalk in reply were only able to post 26 all out. Their next match on May 4 when they face Phoenix fifths at home. Dundalk firsts next match is May 11 away to Adamstown.

The temperature is rising and ribbon is set to be cut on festival season with the return of boutique music festival Vantastival in Bellurgan Park on this May Bank holiday weekend.

Some of the finest indigenous musicians and performers are billed to play at the festival in North Louth with And So I Watch You From Afar, Jerry Fish and Altan are all set to play with Damien Dempsey headlining.

‘The Big Top’ which will feature many of the festivals major acts has been up for a few days as have some of the smaller marquees. The stunning, handcrafted, wooden ValHalla stage will make a return this year and is one of the festivals most impressive innovations, creating an atmosphere without parallel.

“The site is shaping up nicely” said one of the festival’s founders, Louise Tangey. “Our new chill zone with seating and campfire near VanHalla looks fantastic, with intricate wood and willow work on the seats and pizza/coffee hut. Work is also underway on the wooden Grotto Stage, set into a natural amphitheatre on site” she added.

Last minute additions to the line-up include The Poetry Shelf, a large caravan which will house a photographic exhibition. It will also play host to a number of poetry readings over the weekend and punters will be invited to take part too.

Following the cancelation of the LockUp stage a new venue, Monomania, has been added to the bill

and features some well known local names. Organisers say that it will “showcase a range of local bands and DJs.” The Curtain Thieves, I’d Fight Gandhi, RichardRichard and Sanzkrit, are all lined up to play on the new stage.

Organisers haven’t pulled the curtain the whole way back just yet, keeping curiosity keen. “We’ve also lined up a number of quirky features over the weekend, but we like to keep some things as a surprise,” said Louise.

There will be an open mic sessions on The Grotto Stage where anyone can get up and play to the festival audience. And revellers are encouraged to pay attention and watch out for some special guests that might turn up over the weekend.

The event is BYO, but Vantastibar run by the Spirit Store, which also featured last year will be making a welcome return.

The festival specialises in accommodating campervans, and has a boutique camping area designated tent camping areas, but they also have a shuttle bus running from Dundalk town centre, to Bellurgan Park throughout the weekend.

NEW KIA CARENS This is the thirdgeneration Carens has a smaller footprint than its predecessor it is shorter, 15mm narrower and 45mm lower. Yet thanks to a 50mm increase in wheelbase and lower seat positions it has improved head, leg and shoulder room in all three rows of seats, whilst delivering the additional benefits of increased luggage space and a lower loading lip.

The overall height of 1605mm is one of the lowest in class and 5mm lower to that of the Kia Soul.

There are now three individual sliding and reclining centre-

row seats in place of a split bench and two separate seats in the rear, all of which fold flat. The petrol derivative is powered by the 1.6-litre Gamma GDi direct-injection unit that we have seen in other models in the Kia range. It outputs 133bhp and 165Nm of torque, which equates to 0-100kph(60mph) time of 10.9 seconds and top speed of 185kph(115mph).
