A heartbroken Dundalk couple have launched a campaign in the hope of finding their beloved springer spaniels, Duke and Daisy, who were stolen from the Faughart area on February 2. Damien and Siobhan Walsh have offered a reward for anybody who has any information regarding the two dogs’ whereabouts and have urged members of the public to help them return the brown and white springer spaniels back home where they belong. Damien explained that the dogs went missing in the Faughart area after he had taken them to work with him. “I work in Faughart and I had Duke and Daisy with me as I take them with me every

Gerry helps dreams come true By Niamh Kirk Every child living in Louth who is in the Make a Wish Foundation could see their dream come true if local fundraiser, Gerry Lennon, has his way. The big hearted man is holding a raffle for a Volkswagen Golf and is hoping to raise €30k which would be enough to grant the wish of every child in County Louth who is registered with the Make A Wish Foundation. Just before Christmas Gerry was watching the show Christmas Wishes on TV3, which followed the experiences of five children who have a life threatening illness and were given the opportunity to make a dream come true. Saint Brigid Festival The recent Brigid of Faughart Festival was a great success and attracted guests from all over Ireland, as well as from Holland, Italy, England and Spain. The festival started with the St Brigid’s Cross Making workshop in Dulargy National School, where cross maker, Maura Lennon showed the pupils from 3rd and 6th class how to make their own crosses, which they really enjoyed. The preparations for the opening of the new Irish secondary school in Dundalk took another big step forward with the announcement that Una Kirk will take over as principal. Colaiste Lu will will welcome its first ever cohort of students when it opens its doors for the first time this September at

Local authorities found two separate dumps of the toxic sludge over the weekend. Two containers (IBCs which hold 1,000 litres each) were found dumped in a cul de sac about 500m away from the Toberona Bridge,. The two containers were found upright and there were no leaks.In a separate incident one IBC container was found on the Old Church Road.

A woman who was struggling to feed her four young children resorted to stealing groceries in what was described as ‘a crime of the times’. The mother of four children aged between seven and ten appeared at Dundalk District Court where she pleaded guilty to stealing €25 worth of groceries from Tesco at The Long Walk, Dundalk. Crime of the times
As part of Catholic Schools Week, a number of Transition Year students from Colaiste Ris travelled to primary schools throughout Dundalk to find out what they were doing to celebrate their faith. Among those taking part in the initiative were Courtney Boland and Natalie McCann who revealed that it was a very successful week and that given the time of year the theme of St Brigid was high on the agenda. One of the first visits was to St Joseph’s Primary School where a ‘sacred space’ was provided and children were also given a holy medal as a reminder of their faith.
Two of the Transition Year students read bible stories to some of the children in Third Class, while pupils made St Brigid’s Crosses out of reeds. A MAN who was celebrating after taking part in a charity event ended up assaulting another man following a verbal altercation. Jimmy McKeever of Rampark, Jenkinstown, pleaded guilty to striking a man in the mouth which resulted in the victim requiring stitches and having a chipped tooth. The court heard that the incident occurred on May 6, 2012, in the Lumpers bar following a charity walk in aid of Cystic Fybrosis. The defendant’s solicitor stated that approximately 100 people had taken part in the event and they were celebrating its success when words were exchanged between his client and another man. He stated that Mr McKeever then struck one blow with his fist causing the injuries.
The solicitor added that his client, who is married with three children, had borrowed €6,000 from his father to pay compensation to the victim and that his actions were completely out of character. “This was most unusual for my client as he has never been in trouble before. He is surprised that he got involved in such an incident and accepts that he should not have struck out. “He lost his job as a result of the property collapse and has since returned to education. He has apologised to the court and the victim”, added the solicitor who offered €400 towards the Court Poor Box as a means of dealing with the charge. However, in convicting the defendant Judge William Hamill imposed a fine of €300.
With the preparations already underway for the 2103 Rose of Tralee, the search is beginning to find the next Louth Rose to take part in the hugely popular event. Young women throughout the county are invited to live the dream by applying to enter this year’s Louth Rose Selection. The 2013 Louth Rose will represent her county at the Rose of Tralee Regional Festival in Portlaoise, Co Laois and from there, she could go on to the International Festival in August. A Dundalk man who was convicted for a second time of driving with no insurance was disqualified for two years at Dundalk District Court. Thomas Stokes of 1 Road 2, Muirhevnamor, admitted the offence on March 7, 2012. The 27-year-old had a similar conviction in 2005. Judge William Hamill also imposed a €400 fine.

Good news for horses on Cooley Mountains By Niamh Kirk
The difficulties endured by some mountain horses locally may soon be over as Louth County Council have passed a bye-Law that declares Cooley commonage as a control area and all horses on it must be licensed and have an identifying microchip implanted.
Holly’s Horse Haven, a charity that cares for horses in the Cooley area have found it very difficult to identify horses that need their care. There are more than 100 horses roaming the Cooley Mountains but in the absence of an obvious identifiable owner, welfare officers must wait until the animal is visibly mal nourished before they are per-
mitted to take it in. Many of the horses have been abandoned or dumped on the mountain, putting pressure on the resources of the horse charity. The requirement to have a horse on the mountain micro chipped means that where owners are identifiable, they will be responsible for the animal’s care. And where there is no

The County Museum in Dundalk will host an exhibition on the Troubles from February 20 to April 6. Entitled ‘Everyday Objects Transformed by the Conflict’, the exhibition features a collection of familiar items whose function was changed over the course of the Troubles. Amongst items on display is a bin lid – used as a communication tool and a means of protest in nationalist areas as well as a bullet proof clipboard carried by police at vehicle checkpoints in ‘high-risk’ areas. from all different political perspectives and backgrounds including other objects, sound recordings, photographs and videos showing everyday events during the conflict. It’s just like any other day. We’re both single so we don’t really care about it.
I think it’s a bit of a gimmick to be honest. I’m pretty sure St Valentine was actually clubbed to death so there’s not too much romanticism there.
I think the original intent of the day was a bit of a money racket but I think the day has grown into something a bit more special and it’s a breath of fresh air for people to share the feelings for that special person in their life.
Valentine’s Day is a day to be celebrated because it gives people a chance to tell their partners how much they mean to each other and how much they care.
I love St Valentine’s Day. You get flowers and a big teddy bear from your boyfriend and it’s a day where you both spoil each other. What’s not too like?
Fr Paddy Rushe expresses genuine shock at retirement of Pope Benedict By Paul Byrne
Fr Paddy Rushe, chaplain in DkIT, says he was just as stunned as the rest of the world when hearing Pope Benedict XV1 announce his retirement in the Vatican on Monday afternoon. The 85 year old German born pontiff said he would resign on the February 28 because he no longer has the strength to fulfil the duties of his office. And according to Fr Rushe it was
a rare case of a genuine shock announcement in this era of 24 hour news. “I was completely stunned upon hearing the news. I heard the word incredulous used a few times in different news reports and that pretty much sums it up” explained the DkIT chaplain. “I thought it was kind of nice that the announcement caught everybody by surprise in this world of 24-hour rolling news. There were no rumblings at all
about this announcement in the previous couple of days.” he added. When asked what Pope Benedict’s legacy would be Fr Rushe said that it would take some time for his legacy to be established. “He presided during a very difficult time for the church what with the sexual abuse scandals that have engulfed the church over the last number of years. People feel very angry and rightfully so and as head of
the Catholic church Pope Benedict perhaps bore the brunt of some of that anger. ‘However, he was a man of great intellect and some of his writings whilst in office were absolutely fantastic. I’ve only ever read two or three of his books but they are so deep and profound” he added. When asked on his opinion on who would become the next Pope, Fr Rushe said he hoped the cardinals would go for a non-European this time
around. “Personally I’d like to see it given to somebody outside Europe. There’s a guy in New York called Cardinal Dolan who I’d love to see get it. He’s a very affable character and really good with people as well as being media savvy and I think he would be really good.” concluded Fr Rushe. The new pope is expected to be announced before the end of March in time for the Easter celebrations.

Big events coming up for local runners and walkers It is going to be a busy time for local athletes, fun runners and walkers with two big events coming up over the coming weeks. Dundalk Simon Community in conjunction with rehab care and Fine Gael TD Peter Fitzpatrick have organised a 5k fun run to raise funds on Saturday February 23 in Dundalk. Rehab Care and Simon Community work together on the Food Garden Project which teaches participants how to grow, prepare and cook organic fruit and
vegetables. The group make healthy and nutritious meals from the food the produce in the Community Garden. The aim is to increase understanding of nutrition but also of self sufficiency. Such is the success of the project that they plan to roll it out into local primary schools. The hope is that it will help educate younger people about the importance of eating fruit and vegetables and the achievement of growing their own food. The funds raised in Fitzers 5k fun run will go towards

Walentynki to coroczne święto zakochanych przypadające 14 lutego. Nazwa pochodzi od Św. Walentego, którego wspomnienie liturgiczne w kościele katolickim jest obchodzone tego dnia. Św. Walenty jest także patronem osób chorych na epilepsje i choroby nerwowe. Walentynki są obchodzone w południowej i zachodniej Europie od średniowiecza. Europa północna i wschodnia dołączyła do walentynkowego grona znacznie później. Pierwowzorem walentynek było starorzymskie święto: Luperkalia. Pomimo katolickiego patrona tego święta, czasem wiązane jest ono ze zbieżnym terminowo zwyczajem pochodzącym z Cesarstwa Rzymskiego, polegającym głównie na poszukiwaniu wybranki serca, np. przez losowanie jej imienia ze specjalnej urny. Współczesny dzień zakochanych nie ma jednak bezpośredniego związku z jednym konkretnym świętem starożytnego Rzymu, choć jest kojarzony z takimi postaciami z mitologii jak Kupidyn (amor), Eros, Pan czy Juno Fabruata. Możliwe, że zwyczaje związane z tym dniem nawiązują do starożytnego święta rzymskiego, zwanego Luperkaliami, obchodzonego 14-15 lutego ku czci Junony, rzymskiej bogini kobiet i małżeństwa, oraz Pana, boga przyrody. Z kolei Brytyjczycy uważają to święto za własne z uwagi na fakt, że rozsławił je na cały świat sir Walter Scott żyjący w XVIII wieku. Do Polski obchody walentynkowe trafiły w latach 90-tych XX w. z kultury francuskiej i krajów anglosaskich, a także wraz z kultem świętego Walentego z Bawarii i Tyrolu. Święto to konkuruje o miano tzw. świeta zakochanych z rodzimym świętem słowiańskim zwanym potocznie Nocą Kupały lub Sobótką, a później Nocą Świętojańską obchodzonym w nocy z dnia 21 na 22 czerwca. Stałym niemalże elementem walentynek jest wzajemnie wręczanie sobie walentynkowych ozdobnych karteczek. Czerwone, najczęściej w kształcie serca, opatrzone walentynkowym wieszykiem, a często i miłosnym wyznaniem. Ze świętem łączy się również zwyczaj obdarowywania partnera walentynkowymi upominkami w postaci kwiatów, słodyczy, pluszowych maskotek jak również bardziej osobistych elementów garderoby. 14 lutego to okazja dla osób nieśmiałych, platonicznie kochajacych i sekretnie kogoś wielbiących na ujawnienie swych uczuć i wyznanie ich komuś ważnemu dla nas, ale jest to także święto przypominające „singlom”, że nie mają nikogo, kto wysłałby do nich kartkę. Stąd też sporo głosów negujących ten dzień. Walentynki to przecież święto miłości, pamiętajmy więc o naszych bliskich i kochajmy się ☺ a świat będzie piękniejszy. A very special fundraising match will take place on Saturday February 16 in Oriel Park as Dundalk FC Legend Tommy McConville will manage a selection of some of the best local talent to take on a Dundalk FC XI. This match which is being sponsored by Isle De France, Clanbrassil Street kicks off at 6pm and will see players from nine local clubs take on Stephen Kenny’s new look Dundalk side. international who played almost 600 times for the Lilywhites said he is looking forward to the game and is hoping peo-
ple will go out and support the event. “I’m looking forward to the game and it’s great to give the best players
from the local sides a chance to shine on the big stage up in Oriel Park in front of what we hope will be a big crowd. We’ve taken two or three players from nine local clubs around Dundalk and we are confident that it will be a competitive game against Stephen’s side” explained Tommy. Dundalk’s new manager Stephen Kenny was also looking forward to the match as he aims to gel his new look side together in advance of the league which starts next month. “It’s another game for
us to try out different combinations and it has the added bonus of giving us a look at the best of the local talent from the Dundalk leagues.” he added. John Kelleher owner of match sponsor’s L’Isle de France says he was delighted to sponsor the match and anticipated a great day out. Tickets are €5 and available from the club or from L’Isle de France. Supporters can also pay at the gate on the day. The match will be followed by music from DJ Baz.
Rise in volunteers brings benefits By Niamh Kirk
The Volunteer Louth Centre has moved to the Town Hall and is opening on Mondays and Thursdays 9.30am to 5pm, with the group revealing that since 2008 they have seen a 100% rise in the number of people in Dundalk offering their time to help others. The 2006 census showed that about 15% of people living in Dundalk at the time were engaged in some form of volunteer work, making people from the town among the most gen-
erous with their time. Although the question was not included in the 2011 census, the figures indicate that the level of volunteerism in Dundalk is still high, and rising. The impact it is having on the wellbeing of the community is enormous, even if it is not always instantly recognisable. They keep tidy towns initiatives running, recreation facilities for children and provide services for older people, according to John Cotterell of the Louth Volunteering Centre. “If you imagine what it
would be like if one day no volunteers showed up. The streets would be dirtier, kids would be getting into more trouble and older people would be more isolated. Without them so many services simply would not happen,” he said. Last month the Stitches and Bitches, inter generational project was featured in Women’s Way where 79 year old Ide Lenihan told how she had passed on her knowledge and skill to Transition Year student Helen Cunningham who has a passion for dressmaking and
sewing. Helen in turn got a a new skills and networking with people who have experience and can guide and advise as she undertakes her own projects. The volunteers centre is currently looking for people to help with PR, administration and organisation. But they are also looking for people to get involved in one off events like Fitzers 5K Fun Run. The Louth Heritage Group are hoping to get people involved in a one day conservation clean-up of Ravensdale Forest Park this February 23.

Drink related offences lead to three month sentence A Dundalk man who is serving a two-year jail sentence was given a 15 year driving ban after admitting to a drink driving charge and other drink related offences at Dundalk District Court. Jason Kearney of 481 Ashling Park, Dundalk, appeared at the local court to face charges that had been adjourned until his Circuit Court case had been finalised. Earlier this month, he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Rose Martin on December 31 2006 at Phillipstown, Hackballscross and was sentenced
to two years in prison for the offence. The 41-year-old was stopped by Gardai at Patrick St on August 4, 2007, and a blood sample later showed that he was over the legal limit for driving. On June 19, 2011, the defendant was spotted by Gardai on patrol at Castle Ross, Dundalk, in possession of what looked like a handgun. It transpired that it was an imitation firearm and he was arrested. The court also heard that on September 18, 2011, Kearney attended
Dundalk Garda Station. He was drunk at the time and after being asked to leave he threatened to break the glass at the public office, and was subsequently arrested. On October 14 2011, Kearney stole a bottle of brandy worth €40 from Dunnes Stores, Ard Easmuinn. Solicitor Conor MacGuill informed the court that the defendant is currently in prison and has been banned from driving for ten years. Judge William Hamill imposed a three month sentence, and a 15 year driving disqualification.

From Queen’s University, Belfast, Dr Baillie will speak on dendrochronology or dating by means of tree-rings. In the 1980s, he was instrumental in building a year-by-year chronology of tree-ring growth reaching 7,400 years into the past. The evidence suggests that these environmental downturns were wide-ranging catastrophic events. TheAD 540 event in particular is attested in tree-ring chronologies the event coincides with the second largest ammonium signal in the Greenland ice (over the past 2000 years) and was

A man who had consumed a small amount of alcohol before being involved in a car crash told Gardai that he was not the driver of the vehicle, only to make a full admission a number of hours later. Barry McCusker of 1 College Manor, Hoey’s Lane, Dundalk, was fined €300 at Dundalk District Court after pleading guilty to a hit and run charge as a
result of the incident on February 12, 2012. Solicitor Dermot Lavery, stated that although his client had not consumed enough alcohol to trouble Gardai, he was concerned by the fact and as a result told Gardai that the driver had fled the scene. Gardai attended the scene at 3.30am at Bridge a Chrinn where McCusker was one of a number
of youths being treated for superficial injuries by ambulance personnel. However, the 21-year-old later called to the Garda Station and admitted he was driving where he was described as being genuinely remorseful. Judge William Hamill took into account charges of non display of tax and NCT discs as he imposed a €300 fine.

Dacia have announced details of the Sandero Stepway which should go on sale here this year. Dacia is the Romanian subsidiary of Renault, selling around 340,000 vehicles a year worldwide. According to Dacia they were voted “Europe’s most reliable car brand” in a survey of 30,000 car owners in five western European countries last year. The Sandero Stepway has 40mm extra ground clearance over the standard Sandero with SUV/Crossover styling (satin chrome roof bars, front and rear scuff plates and black wheel arch extenders) and a boot that will accommodate 320 litres of luggage with the seats up and 1,200 litres with the rear seats down. Four metallic body colours are available
Cinder Red, Mercury, Pearl Black and Azurite Blue. The entry level Sandero Stepway ‘Ambiance’ crossover is powered by a petrol directinjection, turbocharged, threecylinder 0.9-litre producing 90hp, which according to Dacia records 5.4l/100km (52.3mpg) on the combined cycle with CO2emissions of 125g/km. Standard equipment includes electric front windows, front fog lights and roof bars plus 16” alloylook wheels and body coloured bumpers and door mirrors. There is a height adjustable steering wheel and driver’s seat, leather steering wheel and gearknob and seven-function trip computer. You can even add dark carbon leather upholstery (with synthetic leather side bolsters). As standard the Sandero Stepway is protected by a 3 year/60,000 warranty.
