Row over new cycle lanes erupts again

THE row over the controversial town centre cycle lanes has erupted once again after Labour Senator, Mary Moran, declined to attend the official launch of the Safe Routes to School initiative.

Minister for State in the Department of Transport, Alan Kelly, was in town for the launch along with World Champion cyclist, Martyn Irvine, however, Senator Moran’s absence was a reminder that the the cycle lanes have not gone down well with everyone, including retailers.

Senator Moran said that she has been working for residents in Stapleton Place and retailers in the town centre who are experiencing problems because of the cycle lanes. She said that she is disappointed that the further works to alleviate the prob-

lems that were agreed upon have not been completed, and that it would not be appropriate for her to attend the launch because of these continuing issues.

Ms Moran said that although she supports cycle lanes in general and that most of Dundalk’s cycle tracks work well, there continues to be serious issues surrounding some of the town centre routes.

“I am seeing the real problems that the cycle lanes have created for businesses. It is not doing those people justice and out of support for them it would not be proper for me to attend,” she said.

The core issues that Senator Moran has with the town centre lanes are those on Jocelyn Street that prevent customers getting to local businesses.

Hospital move is blow for expectant mothers

Antenatal clinics in Louth County Hospital are set to be closed in further plans to centralise services in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda. Mothers who attend the clinics in Dundalk will soon have to make their way to Drogheda in order to attend the crucial clinics.

The changes mean that around 60 pregnant women attending the Dundalk clinics will soon have to make the 66 km round trip to Drogheda. The plans will add significantly to

the costs of attending antenatal clinics for expecting mothers by up to €90 per clinic on travel.

“This cost will lead to a dangerous situation where mothers will be forced to choose not to go to her appointments,” said Cllr Tomas Sharkey who is a member of the Save Our Hospital Campaign. He described the cuts as “a huge blow to expectant mothers.”

The HSE later confirmed the plans stating “the primary goal of the organisation of antenatal clinics is to ensure that

each and every antenatal clinic has a Senior Consultant Obstetrician in attendance.”

Last week Clinical Director for Women and Children with the HSE, Alan Feinan defended the move saying it is for efficiency and that no money would be saved by moving the antenatal clinics.

He said that while the current provision of services is perfectly safe and that the quality of care came first.

He equated the plans to the centralisation of can-

cer services to improve overall care.

However, Cllr Sharkey stated that moving Dundalk mothers to a clinic in the Lourdes Hospital will put more pressure on that hospital.

The men from Kilcurry were back in the Barleycorn pub last weekend as they took part again in this year’s

‘Shave or Dye’ which proved so successful for them last year.

A total of €18000 was raised in 2012 when eleven brave souls got their colourful dye jobs shaved to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society. Many of the same faces were back this year as Aidan Kerr and 14 friends took part in the Today FM fundraiser getting their hair dyed with help from Mary Hoey.

This year there was a slight twist with five of the participants getting their heads styled into colourful Mohawks.

As Aidan explains, the idea of the Mohawks came from the Ray D’Arcy show as they attempted to enter the Guinness book of World Records.

“Five of us travelled up to Dublin at 6am on Friday morning to join in the shows attempt to enter the

Guinness Book of World Records. I think the previous record for most Mohawks in a single place was 109 but we smashed it with 257 people turning up.” explained Aidan.

The five returned to Kilcurry to join other participants where they readied themselves for Saturday evening’s head shave in the Barleycorn with Tony Hande doing the honours.

“We had a great night on Saturday and it was great to see so many people turn up and support what we were doing.

“Almost everybody has been touched by cancer at some stage and this was just something we wanted to do to help out. We won’t know for a few days how much we’ve raised but again people have been very generous and we’d like to say thank you”, added Aidan.

after lunchtime to speak at the event. However, as soon as she started things turned sour as jeering and heckling began from a group of assembled protesters.

She quickly abandoned the speech and left the Shopping Centre, but stopping to speak with

stall holders and Dundalk job seekers on the way.

During the event the jeers and heckles continued with protesters chanting ‘Shame on you’ and ‘Out, out, out;’ as she made her way out of the building.

Speaking after the event she said that the protesters would give the town a bad image and that they were short changing their fellow Dundalk citizens.

A video of the event was shared around social networks gaining a lot of attention nationally. Burton’s comments were almost universally dismissed as the peaceful,

but noisy, protest received much support from non participants.

Support for the protesters increased over the weekend after Labour Galway East TD Colm Keaveney labelling the protesters, ‘Neanderthals’ provoked an angry reaction nationally.

Loraine Sloan, a young mother from Dundalk, attended the event. She said that her and many other young mums have tried to contact Minister Burton over cuts but to no avail.

“I was there because we can’t take any more cuts, people are so scared of what is to come. If she

won’t listen to the people what else can we do?” adding that she was shocked at the comments made by Keaveney.

Organisers of the protest stressed that the protest was not an attack on the opening of the jobs fair but an opportunity for the real people of Ireland to have their say against the Minister who still insists that the Austerity programme is working.

Minister Joan Burton has assured the Chamber of Commerce she would return to Dundalk to discuss the issues of depravation and unemployment.

Dundalk Brass Band hit right note

Music Generation Louth has been busy over the past few weeks promoting its new Dundalk Junior Brass Band Programme, organised in association with Dundalk Brass Band.

Tutors Michael Gaskin, James Walsh and John Walsh recently visited St. Malachy’s Boys’ NS, Réalt na Mara NS and Scoil Mhuire na nGael NS, Bay Estate to present concerts to hundreds of children.

Calling themselves the ‘Tin Horn Trio’, they delighted the young, enthusiastic audiences and their teachers with great musical selections arranged for brass instruments.

The concerts created a great interest in playing brass instruments and a big crowd turned up for the Dundalk Junior Brass Band Programme Open Night at Wellington Hall last week. The senior Dundalk Brass Band played a short concert to the packed hall.

Aine aims for Big Apple fundraiser

A local hairdresser and athlete is holding a mountain walk to help her run the New York Marathon in order to raise funds for the Cancer Focus.

Aine Marmion, a hairdresser from Edge Hair Salon in Dundalk is aware that cancer affects everybody at sometime and, as two other friends were running for Cancer Focus , she decided to contribute too. She has to raise €3000 for the charity so she can go to the Big Apple and raise even more.

Aine originally from Ballymascanlon, is well known for fundraising and

participated in last year’s London Marathon in Aid of the Southern Hospice.

She held a mountain walk last year to raise funds to contribute to the total and such was its success she is considering making it an annual event.

“There were around 60 people on the mountain walk last year. It was great craic and a fun family event. My own children do the walk with me and it is social event, as everyone is chatting along the way”, explained Aine.

“The walk only takes two hours but people are free to go at their own pace and the reward at the end is the spectacu-

Unique chance for local girls

Two teenage entrepreneurs were given a unique opportunity to develop their skills when they spent time working with a leading Dublin business.

Tess and Kelly McGlynn, from Kilkerley, set up the Fun4Faces face-painting and balloon modeling company two years ago and through their local Foroige Youth Club they got the chance to improve their skills in face painting with LA make up academy in Dublin.

The pair said that they thoroughly enjoy working with the kids, that it was a joy to watch the expression on the childrens’ faces when they look in the mirror to see the design.

The girls have face painted and balloon modelled at numerous parties and special occasions including ‘The Leaprauchan Hunt’ Carlingford and ‘The World Street Performance Championships’ which were held last year in Merrion Square, Dublin.

Nature trust annual meeting Louth Nature Trust had their annual general meeting on Tuesday February 19 in The Fairways Hotel where Eanna Ni Lamhna was elected Chairperson, Bill Tosh was elected Treasurer and Breffni Martin, Company Secretary.

The board then reviewed 2012 in terms of the Trust’s

major activity, the management of the Little Tern Protection Scheme at Baltray.

Little Terns are ground nesting birds that nest at the beach in Baltray; they require protection in terms of fencing and wardening to keep predators at bay and advise members of the public who use the beach

of their presence. Much of the discussion focused on how to continue funding the project in light of Government cuts.

A second major item on the agenda was a proposal to develop County Louth’s first Nature Reserve, with several possible sites up for consideration.

Finally, it was agreed that the trust would endeavour to work with other agencies in the county such as the council, volunteer centres, other NGOs, schools and other institutions for the promotion and protection of all aspects of nature in County Louth: birds, fauna, flora, and habitats.

Gardai renew appeal over Adrian’s murder GARDAÍ investigating the murder of Detective Adrian Donohoe held a press conference yesterday afternoon where they appealed for information about two pieces of evidence they are currently looking at.

During the press conference which was held in Dublin, Assistant Commissioner Kieran Kenny and Superintendent Gerard Curley showed reporters a car seat and hammer.

The car seat was found in the back of the getaway vehicle used and the hammer was found at the scene.

They also revealed that Crimstoppers

are offering an undisclosed reward for information in addition to the €50,000 award that has been put up by the Irish League of Credit Unions.

The 41-year-old Garda was shot by a gang during a robbery at Lordship Credit Unit, Dundalk last month. A dark coloured Volkswagon Passat was used by the gang in their escape.

Crimestoppers are offering an ‘undisclosed’ reward for information, in addition to the €50,000 award that has been put up by the Irish League of Credit Unions.

Man is injured during assault

Two people were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning after a man was assaulted on the Castletown Road at approximately 5:40am.

A 29 year old male was injured in the attack and he was immediately brought to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital where he is being treated for head injuries.

pealed for any witnesses to call them in order to help with their enquiries.

Meanwhile, a man was arrested on Monday afternoon after he refused to stop for Gardai whilst driving his car.

Two Garda cars were damaged during the car chase before the man was eventually stopped at the Ballymascanlon roundabout.

After the phenomenal success Dundalk Secondary schools had in Trashion Fashion which took place in DkIT in January, the semifinalists who have earned a place into the next round of the competition and will represent Dundalk in the competition ‘Junk Kouture’ have been announced.

Junk Kouture is a national competition for second level students in Ireland and the North which challenges teenagers to create high-end wearable fashion from everyday junk that would normally find its way into the bin.

Three magnificent outfits from Bush Post Primary School have succeeded in getting through to the semi-finals of Junk Kouture.

“Cantastic” by Megan O’Connor, Megan McGunness and MaryRose McCarragher (model), which also placed in the top five outfits at Trashion Fashion - a competition at local level.

Also through is “Flower Power” by Aoife Brady, Niamh Gregory and Shauna Higgins (model) and “Firey Wirey” by Aine Lynch, Megan Ferguson and Catriona Irvine (model).

This is the first year that the school has entered the competition and their selection for the regional semi-final is a credit to their hard work during the course of the year.

O Fiaich College have also earned three places in the semi-finals of Junk Kouture. The outfits representing the school include “From Paper to iPad”, by Nancy Ueasukpakdee Ru-

jiraporn, Kinga Wojciechowska and Samantha Nesbitt (model), which placed in the top five outfits at Trashion Fashion.

Also making it is, “Let Them Eat Cake!” by Megan Magennis, Shannon Clarke and Laura Martin (model) and “Shellshock” by Megan Cordial and Ellie Lawlor.

St Vincents Secondary School, are also participating in the semi-finals of Junk Kouture with the largest amount of outfits getting through.

The five outfits include “Straight to the Point “by Cathy McKeown, Gabby Nelson, Zoe O’Hagan and it is modelled by Orla Murray. Next up is ”Pen Pals” by Ciara Logan, Claire Kelly, Alannah Finn and it is modelled

by Ayla Laverty.

“The African Times”, by Sinead Lynch, Megan Finnegan, Chloe McGrave and it is modelled by Michelle Ko, is also through alongside, “Unlocked” by Rachel Begley, Katie Brady, Ann-Marie Browne, Claire Cooney and it is modelled by Meabh O’Hanrahan,.

Finally, “The flushed away bride” by Emma McEaneaney, Rachel Durnin, Maire Byrne and it is modelled by Rachel McFadden.

Online voting will take place between 9am on Monday February 25 and mid-night on Friday March 1 on www.junkkouture.com.

The semi-finals will be held in DCU, Helix in Dublin on Monday 11thMarch. Tickets cost €15 and it would be great to see a large level of support from Dundalk there to support these schools.

Charity failed S 2 to comply with closure notice The head of a local charity organisation was convicted of failing to comply with a closure notice at Dundalk District Court.

Hassan Boyle T/A Grace Fellowship Family Church was fined €500 and ordered to pay €2,500 expenses, while charges of commencing work in absence of a fire safety notice and commencing work in absence of a commencement notice were taken into consideration.

The case, which was taken by Dundalk Town Council, caused a difficulty for Judge William Hamill who learned that any fine would have to be paid by the charity, not the individual.

As a result, he surmised that the people for whom the charity was designed to benefit, would suffer.

“This is slightly abnormal. It is like fining a school board with the result that there is less money to spend on books for children”, stated the judge.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, in pleading guilty to the charges, stated that the premises in question of the registered charity comprised a coffee shop, place of worship and school.

Scouting numbers reach a 20-year high in Dundalk

The 1st/2nd/5th Louth Scout Group, based on the Castletown Rd have reported a 20% growth in youth members in the last 12 months. There are now almost 140 youth members supported by 26 adult volunteers. This is the highest number the group has had in over 20 years.

What is particularly significant is the growth in the age group of 12 to 15. This number has doubled with the reopening of 5th Louth Scout Troop on Thursday nights. Indeed Scouting all across Ireland has seen huge growth in the last number of years. The total membership of Scouting Ireland is in excess of 35,000. These figures mean that the scouting group first formed in

Woke up in cell after night out A man who went for a night out came in for a surprise when he woke up in a cell at Dundalk Garda Station.

As a result, Sean Mulvey of 51 Glenmore Park, Dundalk, had

no recollection of trespassing at a house in Drumnacarra, Ravensdale on November 18, 2012.

However, the 20-year-old man who is currently waiting to start a FAS course, accepted the facts.

Judge William Hamill noted that the court had dealt with the defendant leniently on a previous occasion as he imposed a one month sentence which he suspended for six months.

Employers forum in Crowne Plaza Hotel An Employers Forum which will take place on 5th March at 5.30 pm in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dundalk, will provide attendees with up to date information on a broad range of employment and development supports now available to businesses in this region and will highlight the role that business leaders can play in and combatting unemployment.

The forum’s keynote speaker, Padraic White, Chairman of Louth

Economic Forum, has extensive experience and direct involvement in the area of employment creation and employability. He was the first Chairman of the Northside Area Partnership, Dublin, which pioneered links between employers and the unemployed. He currently chairs the Employment Services Board of West Belfast and Greater Shankill which jointly with an Employers Forum developed access to jobs for over 1,000 unemployed.

A former MD of IDA-Ireland he is currently Chairman of a diverse range of Irish SMEs. Toxic sludge dumped in disused farm shed The Louth local authorities discovered the largest and most careless dump of toxic sludge dumping so far this year. 29 containers of bi-product from the illegal diesel washing trade were found at Dungooley, KIlcurry, last week.

A total of 36,000 litres of toxic sludge was found in the large plastic industrial containers on this occasion. The containers were found dumped at a disused farm shed and there had been a significant spillage from the reckless dumping.

Local authorities began work on clearing and cleaning the site immediately, but revealed that on this occasion there was no damage done to water supplies.

Later further four IBCs were found by Gardai in Faughart , none of which were leaking.

This is the eighth dumping incident this year and to date

Estimated cost to manage this incident is approx €20,000.

Last year more than €1.1 million was spent cleaning up after

the illegal dumping of IBC’s following the laundering of argicultural diesel. Last year, despite the overall number of IBC’s dumped in the county dropping, the cost of clean-up increased.

there are efforts to smash the trade in illicit fuel. In the multiagency approach to tackling the problem Gardai, PSNI, Irish and UK customs officers, as well as the Criminal Assets Bureau are involved in ongoing operations targeting the trade.

My name is Cathy. In 2010, I started to work in mid-Louth scheme.

As a 43 year old woman I did not have a very good education. I left school at 15 and then went on to work in a factory. I told my supervisor this and she told me about the Adult Learning Service. That’s where it all began.

The first step was to go into Co. Louth VEC, Adult Learning Service in Chapel Street and talk to Francis. We talked about whether I would go into a group or attend a one-to-one tutor. We decided that I would be better off in a group so I returned to learning the following week.

I got very anxious on the day I was due call to the Centre. I joined a group. It did not take me long to fit in. The tutor made me feel very welcome telling us all that we were all there to learn. I was there for over a year. My confidence grew and when my children now ask me about their homework I do not have to send them to their dad – I can help them.

Garda injured during struggle A Garda who struggled with a man while investigating reports of a burglary injured his knee in the process and was out of work for five months.

The incident at Kingswood, Blackrock Rd, on April 29, 2012, resulted in Mark Riordan of 20 Blackwater Court, Dundalk facing a charge of obstructing a police officer at Dundalk District Court.

The court was told that Gardai attended Kingswood after a report of a burglary and saw the defendant coming out of a shed. After being arrested he became aggressive and refused to get into the car. During the struggle one of the officers suffered a knee injury.

Solicitor, Tara Matthews, stated that her 26-year-old client was very intoxicated at the time and he apologised to the Gardai.

In convicting the defendant, Judge William Hamill imposed a €150 fine.

Dundalk Order of Malta recently presented certificates to 15 cadets at a special ceremony.

The cadets who are both boys and girls ranging from the ages of 10 to 16 years old, received their basic First Aid certificate and some cadets also received their intermediate First Aid certificate. On the night members of the senior unit attended along with the families of the cadets.

Each week the cadets meet and train in first aid and educational activities, while they also paid a visit to the Garda station recently to participate in an annual competition.

The Bridie Boland Memorial Award is an award in which is presented to the cadet who

had performed the best over the year in training.

It was so named after a former Order of Malta volunteer of almost 30 years who had passed away suddenly in 2009.

This year’s award winner was Megan Bellew Murphy. ‘

Cricket club want help to win new pitch

By Paul Byrne Dundalk Cricket Club are asking for people to help them win a European wide competition that will hopefully result in them receiving a state of the art artificial pitch.

Eddie Andrews, PRO for the club, says that the new pitch would be a very exciting development for the club and improve standards of play for both batters and bowlers.

“At the moment we play on a bumpy grass pitch and it would be nice to play on a smooth surface for a change to really improve the stand-

ards.The competition is Europe wide and we have managed to reach the final six along with clubs in places like Germany, Israel, Estonia and Lanzarote. The competition is being run by a company called ‘Flicx Pitch’ and the prize is a brand new artificial pitch which is worth about €2000.” he explained.

“At the moment we are letting a pitch in Dromiskin so unfortunately we are limited in what we can do to improve the playing surface. Winning this pitch would be ideal for us and I believe we would be the first club in the country too have such a facility. It

would be great for the club and great for the kids around the area as well to play on a good surface and really improve their game” added Eddie.

Stole wallet after asking for time A woman carrying her shopping on a street in Dundalk had her wallet stolen after being stopped by a man who asked her for the time.

As a result of the incident on September 27, 2012, Thomas McCarthy of 68 Barrack St, Dundalk, appeared in

Dundalk District Court where he admitted the stealing the wallet.

The court heard that the woman was walking on Barrack St when the defendant approached and asked for the time.

When she put down her shopping, he pulled her handbag over her head

and made off with the wallet.

Thanks to the efforts of a ‘good citizen’ the wallet was recovered.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his client, who had not been in trouble for over 10 years, had significant psychological and men-

tal problems. He pointed out that Mr McCarthy realises he can do more to deal with these issues and was willing to fully engage with doctors.

Judge William Hamill adjourned the case until April 17 pending a Probation/Community Service Report.

Plans arrive for school extension THERE was great excitement in Scoil Uí Mhuirí this week when the plans for its new extension arrived at the school.

The plans were put on display in the school on Wednesday for staff and students, while members of the school’s Board of

Management and Parent’s Committee began calling to the school to view the plans also.

On Wednesday evening a special meeting was held for residents living in the vicinity of the school to explain the proposed development.

The reaction from the packed attendance at the meeting to the proposed extension and feedback on the proposals by all the partners was extremely positive with everybody now looking forward to construction getting underway.

Winners delighted with new bikes

There are ten very happy children in Dundalk this week, having been selected as the winners of brand new bikes.

As part of the Go Dundalk Smarter Travel schools project, Castletown Girls School and CBS primary school ran a competition over a four week period. These prizes were won by students who either walked, cycled to and from school during the competition’s four week period, or by students whose parents availed of the park ‘n

stride initiative.

Each time a student walked or cycled they received a raffle ticket so the more they used sustainable travel to and from school, the more chances they had of winning.

The prize-winners were selected when the winning raffle tickets were drawn from all the entries and the winners were presented with their bicycles

Chance to become Admiral of Raft Race

This year’s Blackrock Raft Race and Family Fun Day takes place on Sunday June 23, the organisers have announced. Blackrock Tidy Towns, who have organised the event each year since 1996, are planning to have more teams taking part as well as an improved programme of events that will again have something for everyone.

To mark The Gathering the Admiral for this year’s Raft Race will be someone from the Blackrock diaspora who will be home either permanently or to visit on the day, and nominations for the role are being sought from family or friends. DkIT have their own version of Harlem Shake

The students at DkIT have been busy this week making waves online with their contribution to the internet craze the Harlem Shake.

Such is the popularity of the video it got almost 20,000 hits in just 48 hours after being posted on YouTube last week.

Hundreds of students took part in the event organised by Stephen Brannigan and recorded by fellow student, Aaron Lawless.

“We did the video because it is such a big sensation at the moment. I’m in my final year and I wanted to do something to look back at that would be still around,” said Stephen who is delighted with the success of the video.

“We shared the video on the events page we set up on Face-

book and it just took off after that. Former students that are in Australia and Canada can see what’s happening in the college,” said Stephen.

It wasn’t just the students who got in on the action as DkIT’s Chaplin, Father Paddy Rushe who does a solo ’shake’ during the two-minute-long video.

Stephen said after meeting Fr Rushe he knew that the priest was making big efforts to engage with the students and that he was a bit quirky so they asked him to get involved.

“He was a big help and did it in such good spirit,” said Stephen.

Fr Rushe said that when he was asked to take part he was immediately interested but admitted he wasn’t aware of the online phenomenon.

He wanted to get involved be-

cause it could help with his mission to help the students in the college and show how approachable he is.

“I hope it will open doors for me, the students can see that I can have a bit of craic and that I’m not too traditional or too stuffy and that they really can come and talk to me,” he said.

“I checked out what it was online. I knew my dancing skills wouldn’t be superb, but it was a bit of craic. There was a good buzz around the college, a great atmosphere on the day,” he added.

Town comes alive for Fitzer’s run Row over new cycle

Dundalk came alive on Saturday morning as runners, walkers and joggers braved the icy conditions to take part in Fitzer’s 5K Fun Run. The Marshes Shopping Centre was a hive of activity on Saturday morning as in excess of 450 people turned up for the very successful event which raised over €6,000 for both RehabCare and Dundalk Simon Community.

Not surprisingly, the Fun Run got a thumbs up from all involved and Fiona McLaughlin of the Rehab Centre summed up the mood by saying: “I thought it was absolutely excellent and everyone at the run participated very well.

The weather was lovely at the start but then it began to snow while we were warming up, but it

was really enjoyable”.

Staff member, Elizabeth McArdle, was thrilled with the success of the first event, while Deirdre Quinn explained

how the money from the run would be used.

“The essence of the fun run was to raise money for the food garden project.This is

where people in the local community can learn to grow their own vegetables in a safe environment local schools are involved in this project

also. They also hope to provide a cooking instructor to teach people how to make healthy nutritious meals using the food they had grown themselves”, added Deirdre who already has plans to stage the event next year.

“The feedback we got was great, everyone enjoyed the run, so we will definitely be organising the run again next year.

Hopefully it will be just as successful if not more.

I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who volunteered to help at the registration tables and the stewards who kept everyone safe.

“A special thanks goes to Peter Fitzpatrick who put a lot of time and effort in ensuring everything went smoothly the sponsors.. All the money that we have raised will go directly back to our projects” she explained.

From page 1 The Labour Senator also said she was concerned with the safety aspects of some of the cycle lanes, in particular on Chapel St where the cycle lanes goes against the flow of traffic.

Senator Moran said she has recently found out that the works to fix issues in Stapleton Place will be carried out sometime this year. However they will be at the expense of Dundalk Town Council and not the Government’s Smart Travel Scheme.

These expenses could have been easily avoided according to Senator Moran if the council had consulted more with the residents before the cycle lanes were implemented.

Senator Moran however has regularly been in touch with the Department of Transport over the problems the cycle lanes cause and expressed her hope that Minister Kelly would use the opportunity to point out to the council the work that needed to be done.

Meanwhile, Caroline McDonald, a director of the Home Bakery on Jocelyn St. has again outlined her frustrations regarding the ‘drastic reduction

in footfall’ in her Jocelyn St. Shop since the loss of car parking spaces due to cycle lanes.

In a letter to Senator Mary Moran she outlines the impact cycle lanes have had on her business.

“We have seen a drastic reduction in our footfall in our Jocelyn st shop,we have had to close our coffee shop, which had been open for thirtyfive years as a direct result in the loss of parking. This meant making staff redundant.

“We have also reduced our shop staffs hours, since our customers can no longer access the area.

“People have repeatedly told us they have stopped coming near the whole area. All of the other small businesses surrounding us have reported the same impact.

“We have stated all along that we are not opposed to cycle lanes in general but not at the expense of jobs.

“The most frustrating part of this is we see no children cycling these routes since the work has been completed. Parents we have spoken to deem them unsafe for their children.” she concluded.

Viewing of impressive facilities at Colaiste Lu The progress towards the opening of Colaiste Lu took another major step when members of the Co. Louth VEC were viewed the all-Irish post-primary school premises in Dundalk.

Coláiste Lú will operate entirely through the medium of Irish. Classes are set to commence for students this September. An entrance assessment for incoming first year students is scheduled to take place on March 2.

The new all-Irish school is being developed over three distinct phases with phase one now complete.

At this point the school has a spacious reception area, an Art room, Music room, Home Economics room, computer room, Technical Drawing room and a number of general classrooms.

The school also has administrative and pastoral offices, a parent/interview room, a staff room and a spacious student canteen area. The school has been kitted out with new furniture and equipment, in-

cluding digital projectors in all teaching spaces and Wi-Fi access throughout.

Phase two, which entails the development of a new Science room and Technology workshop, will be completed by September.

World champ at cycle launch Tree Surgeon/Home Heating

World champion cyclist Martyn Irvine was in Dundalk yesterday (Tuesday) to congratulate students who completed cycle training as part of the Dundalk Smarter Travel Schools Project.

Fresh from his historic gold and silver medal wins in Belarus less than a week ago, he joined Alan Kelly TD, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport in presenting certificates to the students in St Vincent’s School, Dundalk.

of the Safe Routes to School project and joined Dundalk Town Council Cathaoirleach, Cllr Jennifer Green, and students on a cycle and walk from Jocelyn Drive to St Vincent’s School where a number of students received certificates recognising cycle training they had taken part in.

The Safe Routes to School Project had its origins in the Dundalk Smarter Travel Schools Project which sought to create changes in attitude to travelling to school and also to provide an infrastructure to allow a

sustainable approach to school travel.

Dundalk Town Council received the support of Cuchullain Cycling Club in encouraging students to undertake cycle training.

Also developed was a Park ‘n’ Stride network where parents driving children to school are enabled to park for a short time, free of charge, in one of 16 car parks close to schools and walk their children to and from the school gates.

A total of ten schools are involved in the programme with three designated target

schools.

The training and infrastructure aimed at the target schools also benefit the remaining schools in the programme.

The schools are as follows: Target Schools: CBS Primary; Castletown Girls NS; St Vincent’s Secondary School.

Observer Schools: Colaiste Ris; St Mary’s College, St Mary’s Rd; Dun Dealgan NS; Realt na Mara; St Nicholas’ NS; Dundalk Grammar.

Survey School: St Nicholas’ Monastery Boy’s School (De La Salle NS).

Dundalk Town Council have stated that results from surveys conducted as part of the project are, to date, positive, although figures provided are in terms of percentages.

Speaking on the launch of Safe Routes to School, Cllr Jennifer Green, Cathaoirleach, Dundalk Town Council, said: “Congratulations to everyone who has taken part in this project, including representatives from Dundalk Town Council, Cuchulainn Cycling Club and of course the students who all took part in the various training sessions.

Dundalk Young Irelands hold presentation night Dundalk Young Irelands GFC held a successful under-age presentation and registration night in St Gerard`s Hall on Thursday February 21.

Club Secretary Pat Hamilton was M.C on the occasion which was held to honour the four winning Underage Teams , present them with their medals and announce the Player of the Year winners for 2012 season.

Club Chairman Tony Hande welcomed all juveniles, parents and committee members to the function. He thanked the different team mentors for the dedication , time and effort they put into working tirelessly with their charges during the year .

Laurence O`Hanlon spoke re. Under 12s team and announced Players Player of the Year Sean Prendergast.

John Laverty spoke re the U.13 team

and announced Dylan Mulligan as the Players Player of the Year 2012.

Pat Bailey spoke re. the Under 14 team and announced ChineduOsadebe as the Players Player of the Year 2012.

Adrian O`Donoghue was loud in his praises for the U.16 squad who worked hard all year especially during winter indoor training and to go on win the Div. 1 A League before naming Jordan O’Donoghue as the Players Player of the Year 2012.

The successful Minor squad were composed mainly of Players from the Under 16 team but they too all made their mark at this level under Adrian O`Donoghue, Simon Flynn and Pat McCarthy and had contested two finals, winning the Championship.

Adrian also spoke about. the many challenges facing young Players at all levels and the importance of sport which played a vital part in maintaining a healthy lifestyle for all young and not so youthful adults.

The players here were the future of the club and their ongoing loyalty and dedication would pay off for both themselves and Dundalk Young Irelands in the long term.

Tony Hande presented the members of the four successful teams with their winners medals and pointed out that the different Player of the Year Awards recipients were chosen by the team members by a text poll at the end of the season.

An enjoyable social night was had by all and parents, players, team mentors and supporters liik forward to 2013.
